At first he thinks he may be going insane, but perhaps he has found the way out of his jaded existence after all.

Jet (Jet, #1)

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Code name: Jet

Twenty-eight-year-old Jet was once the Mossad’s most lethal operative before faking her own death and burying that identity forever.

But the past doesn’t give up on its secrets easily.

When her new life on a tranquil island is shattered by a brutal attack, Jet must return to a clandestine existence of savagery and deception to save herself and those she loves. A gritty, unflinching roller-coaster of high-stakes twists and shocking turns, JET features a new breed of protagonist that breaks the mold.

Fans of Lizbeth Salander, SALT, and the Bourne trilogy will find themselves carried along at Lamborghini speed to a conclusion as jarring and surprising as the story’s heroine is unconventional.

Frostwalker

~

There’s something in the woods behind Jake Marsden’s house – and someone wants him to find it. A strange dream shatters his sleep, night after night, and a compulsion to find the dark presence in the forest wars with his logical and ordered nature. What’s a geek to do?

When his small hometown of Wynn falls under an ancient curse, Jake will find himself in a battle against creatures worse than any he’s faced in a game. Playing for keeps, it will be geek versus god in the fight to stop an evil force bent on destroying everything he holds dear.

The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth – If They Live Long Enough.

~~~
My Review
I heard the theme from Jaws when I started reading this.
No one gets eaten in the beginning of Frostwalker though. But, the terror creeps up on you slowly as the author breathes atmosphere and dread into the story, like an eerie, slow rolling mist.
Jake has been dreaming about a Light in the woods. Dreaming about it for weeks. A Light in the woods behind his house.
scary woods photo: Dark Woods mysterious-scary-forest-pacific-northwest-halloween-holiday-1050x1400.jpg
It calls to him, pulling him from his sleep. He finds himself standing in the frigid cold, facing the stand of trees, night after night.
His sleepless nights begin to wear him down, make him question his sanity, so he confides in his best friend and fellow geek, Eric.
These two have been best friends since they were knee-high to a grasshopper. They’ve stuck together through thick and thin, and Eric sees no reason to change that now.
Whatever’s in the woods is growing stronger, leaching into the small town, changing people. Those it doesn’t consume, it inhabits, taking over their bodies and minds and turning them loose on others.
snowed in town photo: Sunny snowed in town StuckinSilverton056.jpg
The sleepy little town of  Wynn is in the midst of the worst snow storm anyone can remember, cutting the inhabitants off and they have no idea of the evil moving closer, advancing house by house towards the heart of the town.
I like a story about men as best friends. It’s like being a fly on the wall, watching how they bond and act when women aren’t present. Jake and Eric are a good example.
When Jake finally sees her, I mean really sees Nancy, his receptionist, he realizes he’s been in love with her for a long time.
Eric and his girlfriend, Wendy, cut Jake no slack, ribbing him about how long it took him to take off his blinders.
Nancy is gentler on him. She fell in love with the shy geek that is Jake, and has just been biding her time.
You can’t help but become attached to these four. The author does an excellent job of giving each one their own unique personalities. Each voice stands out and makes for fun reading.
When the horror ramps up, you’ll be pulling for these guys, cringing when things go bad, as you can see no good outcome.
That’s when it gets even more intense, as the entity in the woods must be confronted and stopped.
I was reminded of a couple of movies while reading Frostwalker. The small town, isolated by snow and ice, had me thinking of 30 Days of Night.
30 days of night photo: 30 DAYS OF NIGHT 30daysofnightpic.jpg
And the insidious power of the entity also reminded me of the movie, Phantoms, from the Dean Koontz book. How the power takes over the town with a palpable presence.
Jake and Eric are ready. They’ve prepared. It’s time to see what’s in the woods. And they won’t be going alone.
Cue some sinister music and the chills will run up and down your spine!
5 Stars for making me afraid to go to sleep.
I don’t know about you, but I just love freebies. Especially when they’re books!
kindle fire photo: Kindle Fire fire.jpg
I think the idea of offering a book for free is ingenious. Maybe the author doesn’t see a huge jump in sales after offering their book for a free download. Maybe it’s a gradual growth.
book shelf photo: Book Shelf 7846845.png
I do know that when I purchase a free download, if I really enjoyed the book, I will buy other books by that author. Not all at once as I have a book budget, but one here and one there. And if I really loved the book, I will go for the print copy. I love to have a physical copy to put on my bookshelf. I can take it down and hold it, smell it, feel the paper between my fingers. A print book is wonderous.
So, I’d like to thank all of you awesome authors for the many free books you have made available. I, for one, am now your biggest fan!
Claws is a book I discovered for free on Amazon.
When I get a free book, I feel bound to do a review. It’s the least I can do.
Plus, I love reviewing books. The only thing better is reading them!
You can get a free copy of Claws here!
So here is my review of Claws.
Claws
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Have you ever went to do your review and lost all of your notes?
I am stompin mad! I can’t find any of my notes, so now I have to start from scratch.
To begin:
In picturesque Athens, Alabama, a pet food company is working with an experimental cat food laced with hormones and appetite enhancers. The feed causes cats to add muscle, gain weight, and exhibit extremely aggressive behavior. When Patricia Reese, head of the research project, threatens to expose the pet food as a threat to public safety, she finds herself out of work, her home ransacked, and all her carefully gathered proof missing.
The cats involved in the testing are scheduled to be euthanized by the company, but well-meaning animal rights activists release the animals. These enhanced, hyper-aggressive felines begin to prey on small game in the area, and then the ravenous animals turn their attention to people.
An unemployed scientist, a small special ops team, and a homeless veteran join forces to protect the inhabitants of Athens. Racing against time, they try to prevent the looming catastrophe.
But when someone steals the secret formula that created the menace and sells it to eight foreign enemies of the United States, the most deadly biological weapon ever created has been unleashed. The genie is out of the bottle and the world may never be the same.
My Review
When will they learn? Someone always thinks they can tamper with Mother Nature and it inevitably ends up with bloodshed and death.
The pet food company knows something’s wrong with their product, but the side affects to the cats opens another door. A door with big dollars, when several other countries want the formula for their own.
When the animal rights activists free the cats, they have no idea of the repercussions. These aren’t your ordinary house cats anymore. They are much larger, packed with muscle, longer teeth, and larger claws and they are hungry, always hungry. You don’t dare get between them and their food.
There’s a slow building romance between Patricia, the former head of research at the pet food company, and Jerry, an undercover special ops soldier. What’s a good horror story without some romance and characters to care about.
Throw in some scumbags and mysterious characters with hidden agendas and you have a great tale of suspense, mayhem, and murder.
You might think cats aren’t a big deal, but these cats aren’t ordinary. They’re hormonally enhanced, much more lethal than your normal house cat. They’re also very vicious. Let’s put it this way, they’re spitting mad.
You could probably handle a few when they attack, but when they ambush you in large numbers, you’re kibble.
Imagine what happens when dogs become involved.
After reading Claws, I’ll never look at my pets the same way again. Who knows what’s in that new brand of pet food you just bought?
I liked everything about this book. The author moves you through the scenes smoothly, building the suspense, putting the horror right in your face, and sprinkling many colorful, intriguing characters throughout the story to make this a very exciting read.
The author gives you a killer ending, but leaves an exciting opening for more of this story, which continues in Claws 2. It’s like the last scene in a not so happily ever after movie.
4 Stars and on to Book Two!
goodreads-badge-add-plus
This is book two, just warning ya.
I’ll be telling you about this one soon!
From California to the east coast, it rained across most of the continental United States. From Los Angeles to New York City, residents reported an odd, whitish-grey residue that coated everything.
Cats groomed the residue from their bodies, because that’s what cats do, and then they turned to their feed bowls with increasing hunger.
The most deadly biological weapon ever created had been unleashed. It was one that would effectively pit most forms of animal life against mankind.
Humanity was immune to the growth hormone. However, exposed to massive doses, mankind was not immune to the chemical component of the compound that triggered the hyper aggression, nor was humanity immune to the appetite enhancer.
By mid-February, violent mobs of enraged hungry people were rioting in the streets of every major city in the world. In American cities, some of these riots were sparked by angry pet owners who were outraged that the government was supposedly plotting to exterminate all dogs and cats as a preemptive measure to protect the population. Pet owners viewed the mandatory registration of all dogs and cats with government officials by the end of February as a prelude to that extermination effort. Other people, generally those who didn’t own pets, were supportive of the measures. This led to protests and counter protests, which quickly turned violent as the hyper aggressive groups clashed.
In the months that followed, one by one, the governments of the world collapsed under the strain of trying to maintain order. Food production ground to a halt in most of the world as the men and women who’d been feeding the human race succumbed to the effects of massive exposure to the formula.
As the governments collapsed, so did the infrastructures supporting the civilization of mankind. Mass transit, power generation, and water purification were among the first to fail, but they were quickly followed by oil and gasoline production.
In six months, humanity plunged from the top of the food chain to a position near the center and the world would never be the same.
This is a 112,500 word book that has numerous accompanying photographs to depict the scenes.
Releasing April 15th!
This scene is from when Avery is interrogated by the airport gestapo! I had to include most of it as I loved it.
“How can you explain this?” one asked as he held up the wrapped box.
“The present from Melissa?”
“Don’t be a smart ass with us Miss. What is your name?”
“Avery Middleton.”
“Miss Middleton. How can you explain this?”
“It’s a gift from Melissa.”
The FBI guy groaned and rubbed his head. The door opened again and another TSA agent came in with one of those big German Shepherd guard dogs. The dog came up to me and I reached out my hand to pet it. I thought it was a handsome looking dog and I’d always loved animals.
“Hi there fella,” I said.
The damn thing nearly took my hand off as it growled and snapped at me, while the agent pulled it back by its leash. I screamed at the top of my lungs and everyone jumped to their feet as the room broke out in chaos. I leaped up on the table fearing the beast was going to chow down on me for lunch, as it was now foaming at the mouth while his saliva was gushing out and pooling on the floor.
“Are you all trying to kill me or something?” I hollered.
“That’s a bomb sniffing dog! You’re not supposed to pet the damn thing. It’s trained to attack!”
“Well, it would’ve been nice if ya’ll had told me! Dern, it nearly ate my arm!”
“It did not!”
“Did too! What kind of place are ya’ll running here?”
Leave it to Anne to have me laughing at and loving Avery.
The Clearing of Travis Coble
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Description
Travis Coble didn’t kill and eat his family. At least that’s what a jury decided twenty years ago. But like Lizzie Borden, Travis Coble was branded guilty by an angry public and consigned to a life of suspicious whispers and sidelong stares. Now, Professor Dick Myers wants to clear Travis’s name once and for all. An interview with the reclusive mountain man would not only bring Myers fame—it could save his job.
But Myers will find more than a good story in Coble’s isolated shack in the Smoky Mountains. He will find the truth about what happened twenty years ago…and the true meaning of horror.
My Review
I love character driven stories and there are some doozies in this one.
The author wrote each character so distinctly, their voices were so individual, I could pick them out without reading which was which, just like hearing their conversations.
Travis Coble is the stereotypical red-neck. He lives in the mountains in a ramshackle house. The yard is filled with rusted out junk and broken toys, and the weeds have taken over.
Professor Myers has his doubts about Coble’s guilt. He’s thinking how great it would be if he could prove the man’s innocence. What a big splash it would make.
The professor has an air of superiority about him, which doesn’t sit well with Travis, and he needs this story so he brings it down a notch. He’s researched Travis and his murder trial and knows the man is crafty, has an evil intelligence. He needs to keep his wits about him.
As the interview progresses, so does Travis’s belligerence.  Professor Myers is no match for him.
The suspense is subtle at first. It creeps up on you slowly and you become aware of something nasty coming soon. I swear I would have screamed if someone had spoken while I was reading the ending.
I was so wrapped up in the final scenes. While I was grossed out by what was happening and what I visualized was coming next, it was more suggestion than graphic description. That’s what made it so horrifying.
I swear I heard the whisper of dueling Banjo’s while reading this. If you’ve seen the movie Deliverance, you’ll know what I mean.
5 Stars for making my skin crawl!
Thanks to Brendan at untreed reads for providing me with this book.
And thank you, Jonathan, for making me afraid to go to sleep! That’s what a horror book should do.
About the author
Jonathan Janz
Jonathan Janz grew up between a dark forest and a graveyard, and in a way, that explains everything. Brian Keene named his debut novel The Sorrows “the best horror novel of 2012”. The Library Journal deemed his follow-up, House of Skin, “reminiscent of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and Peter Straub’s Ghost Story.”
Samhain Horror will also publish his third novel, The Darkest Lullaby, in April. Look for his fourth novel, an action-packed survival horror thriller called Savage Species, this summer. He has also written three novellas (The Clearing of Travis Coble, Old Order, and Witching Hour Theatre) and several short stories.
His primary interests are his wonderful wife and his three amazing children, and though he realizes that every author’s wife and children are wonderful and amazing, in this case the cliché happens to be true. Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page.
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
My tease for today is from Broken Illusions by Ellie James
A Midnight Dragonfly Novel
Broken Illusions (Midnight Dragonfly, #2)
goodreads-badge-add-plus
A sexy, suspenseful paranormal thriller.
Here’s my tease.
“Love isn’t supposed to have conditions,” I said, staring at the dull haze of moonlight from behind the clouds. “Or rules. It’s not supposed to hurt.”
Chase stiffened. I felt it, even through the feather-light touch of his fingers.
 Love was something we didn’t talk about.
“How can it not hurt?” he asked quietly. “When someone else has that much control over you?”
I’m about two-thirds through with this one and it’s fun. I like books with a psychic element and this  has a lot of suspense and some light romance.
How about you? Got a tease? Tell me!
