My Review

So, I knew going in that golden boy, Beau Devareaux, was a cruel twist. Being a star football quarterback, dating a popular cheerleader and having a bright future waiting for him should have been his dream come true. Bit he had other dreams. Much darker ones. And then he dared to make one of those dreams come true. And then another. There was no turning back, even if he wanted to. Which he didn’t.

Twin sisters, Dawn and Leslie, are both involved with Beau. Dawn dates him and thinks he hung the moon. Leslie sees through his mask. He stalks her, wanting the sister he can’t ever have. And Leslie wants her sister to open her eyes and see him for what he is.

A story that could be ripped from the front pages can really get under my skin. It’s been said you can’t really know a person. You can’t recognize evil.  Now that scares me.

This was a bit slow in the beginning, but once Beau’s facade started to crumble it really picked up. And the ending. It’s one of those you won’t see coming. Twisted good.

Synopsis

A High School “American Psycho

SOME TRUTHS ARE BETTER KEPT SECRET.
SOME SECRETS ARE BETTER OFF DEAD.

Along the banks of the Bogue Falaya River, sits the abandoned St. Francis Seminary. Beneath a canopy of oaks, blocked from prying eyes, the teens of St. Benedict High gather here on Fridays. The rest of the week belongs to school and family—but weekends belong to the river.

And the river belongs to Beau Devereaux.

The only child of a powerful family, Beau can do no wrong. Handsome. Charming. Intelligent. The star quarterback of the football team. The “prince” of St. Benedict is the ultimate catch.

He is also a psychopath.

A dirty family secret buried for years, Beau’s evil grows unchecked. In the shadows of the ruined St. Francis Abbey, he commits unspeakable acts on his victims and ensures their silence with threats and intimidation. Senior year, Beau sets his sights on his girlfriend’s headstrong twin sister, Leslie, who hates him. Everything he wants but cannot have, she will be his ultimate prize.

As the victim toll mounts, it becomes crystal clear that someone has to stop Beau Devereaux.

And that someone will pay with their life.

~~~~~
Check out the excerpt:
Crickets chirped and mist curled around him as Beau eased out of the crack in the wall to the cells. The chill in the air teased his sweaty skin, but the surge of power pounding through his blood was like liquid fire.
The rush consumed him. He knew in that instant he would find another victim, but his rational mind begged him to be careful.
Don’t get caught.
He chuckled. Besides the money, his father still had hefty political clout in Baton Rouge, thanks to his notorious grandfather and years of murky business dealings. The family name had spared him in the past from legal proceedings and institutions. It would again.
Heading toward the fountain across the grassy field, Beau considered his next night of fun. Before he reached the forgotten angel, a flash in the corner of his eye made him turn.
Amid the trees, crowding the edge of the property, something darted in and out. He could just make out a long, white hooded cloak, fluttering and billowing at the edge of the woods. Then it disappeared.
His heart rocketed to his throat. It can’t be!
All the stories he’d heard of the lady in white of The Abbey came rushing back at once, intensifying his panic.
Then he calmed. Someone had to be messing with him. It wasn’t the girl. Kelly had taken off, a bawling mess, across the field several minutes before and he’d heard the slam of the iron gate. He was alone. Unless … the guys had pulled a fast one on him.
But the guys don’t know about your room in the cells.
Beau cut across the grass, anxious to get to the iron gate and back to the party. Almost to the path, he glanced back over his shoulder to the patch of trees where he had seen the ghostly presence. Nothing was there.
It was just your imagination. Or was it?
He made it to the party at the beach, relieved to be back among people, but the incident with the ghost had eradicated his high.
He hungered for it to return but would have to wait.
My Review
I really enjoyed the Hatching series and when I saw the author had a haunted house tale, I couldn’t wait to see how he spun it.
The house is haunted. In more ways than one. It’s a smart house like no other. But what do you do when the AI goes rogue?
I can’t begin to review this in the way I’d like. It would have too many spoilers. There are so many side stories that come together in the end to reveal the truth about the haunting. The characters have their own agendas and some secrets they’d do most anything to keep from coming to light. And the techie house just plain scares me.
I was hoping to love this. But, I just didn’t get into it the way I did with the author’s spider series. Not so much because there were none, more because I didn’t like any of the character’s. They were shallow and secretive, with few redeeming qualities. Maybe the author wanted them to come across that way, and that’s okay. I don’t always have to like character’s to enjoy a good story. But, in this case, I needed to care about at least one, And, I didn’t. Though, a certain someone did intrigue me.
In all,  an entertaining read with a haunting of the modern kind. I may not have loved this, but I never didn’t want to finish it. And I’ll be game to read whatever the author brings on next.
Synopsis
In this white-knuckle thriller from the internationally bestselling author of the “apocalyptic extravaganza” (Publishers Weekly) The Hatching series, a family moves into a home equipped with the world’s most intelligent, cutting-edge, and intuitive computer ever—but a buried secret leads to terrifying and catastrophic consequences.
After two years of living on cheap beer and little else in a bitterly cold tiny cabin outside an abandoned, crumbling mansion, young programmers Shawn Eagle and Billy Stafford have created something that could make them rich: a revolutionary computer they name Eagle Logic.
But the hard work and escalating tension have not been kind to their once solid friendship—Shawn’s girlfriend Emily has left him for Billy, and a third partner has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. While Billy walks away with Emily, Shawn takes Eagle Logic, which he uses to build a multi-billion-dollar company that eventually outshines Apple, Google, and Microsoft combined.
Years later, Billy is a failure, beset by poverty and addiction, and Shawn is the most famous man in the world. Unable to let the past be forgotten, Shawn decides to resurrect his and Billy’s biggest failure: a next-generation computer program named Nellie that can control a house’s every function. He decides to set it up in the abandoned mansion they worked near all those years ago. But something about Nellie isn’t right—and the reconstruction of the mansion is plagued by accidental deaths. Shawn is forced to bring Billy back, despite their longstanding mutual hatred, to discover and destroy the evil that lurks in the source code.
The problem is, while he’s following the old evidence, she’s collecting new samples—and putting herself in danger from the same organization that killed her brother. Jimmy was definitely onto something before he was murdered. Now, Nate has another worry: some of the new evidence Grace has found points back to members of the Dark Falls PD.
As strange coincidences turn deadly, Nate has to become Grace’s protector. They don’t know who they can trust and who they can’t. Will Grace and Nate be the next victims in a massive cover-up? Or can they figure out which cops are dirty fast enough to stay alive?
Cryptid: Discovery
Cryptid Trilogy Set 1
by Douglas E. Roff and Jacob A. Roff
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Adam St. James, software genius and savant Chief Technologist of the
massive American DataLab Project, had just returned to his home in
Barrows Bay, British Columbia from Tucson, Arizona. He had spent the
better part of the past month working on a pro bono assignment for
his father’s friend Peter Berg, Regional Director of the FBI,
working out of the Seattle field office. His favor for the FBI was to
secure the mother lode and Holy Grail of the FBI’s Joint Organized
Crime Task Force that Berg believed he had accidentally stumbled
upon. Mere fortuity had led him to what he thought was fifty years or
more of Mafia financial books and records detailing organized
criminality from Seattle to Miami and all points in between.
What Adam found was nothing even remotely resembling what Regional
Director Berg was looking for. It had been a small clerical error
made by a temp transposing a letter or two in a last name that led
Adam St. James to his incredible discovery. But this discovery was
too incredible, too massive to even contemplate as being authentic.
Adam himself did not believe it could be true. Would he be proven
correct or was the truth too immeasurably stranger than fiction?
If Adam had accidently stumbled upon a great discovery, it would mean
that he had fortuitously confirmed the existence of the cryptid of
all cryptids. Had Adam found scientific and verifiable proof of the
existence of an unknown species of creatures capable of transforming
to human form or was this some immense practical joke designed to
annoy and embarrass him and his father, noted forensic archeologist
and author, Edward St. James?
His journey will be fantastic. His discovery, if true, immense.
But will Adam and his eclectic family survive discovery? Will
humanity?
Cryptid:
Discovery chronicles the discovery of the Gens Collective, ancient
and primal beings previously unknown to humanity but living among
mankind as crypto humans.
They live among us.
Murder, intrigue, deception, treachery, lust and betrayal all come together
in the Cryptid Trilogy as mankind faces off against an unknown
species bent on its total destruction as the dominant species on the
planet.
Adam continues to develop his amazing natural abilities as he seeks to
understand and control them. How will this saga end?
Cryptid: Probe
Cryptid Trilogy Set 2
They live among us.
Working with his father, renowned archeologist Edward St. James, and his new
wife, Misti Alarcon, Adam St. James continues his investigation into
the Gens Collective and its rival rebel faction, the Black Shirts.
Both factions seek the demise of homo sapiens and have developed the
means to destroy humanity in what they call the Great Cull. And they
seek to destroy each other.
As Adam continues his dialog with Paulo Fortizi, leader of the Gens
Collective, he is met with deceit and duplicity at every turn. The
Gens Collective desperately seeks to find Adam, who they call the
Human, and recover their lost Library.
Adam continues to develop extraordinary new mental abilities with a close
group of colleagues and finds his new abilities are more powerful and
frightening than he could possibly imagine. Can he control his powers
or will they be his undoing?
With the addition of the beautiful and mysterious Alana McCarthy, world
renowned NSA computer hacker, and the equally mysterious and lethal
Nocera “Noki” Lee, Adam confronts his adversaries uncovering the
depth and breadth of the plot against humanity. Can they succeed?
Only Adam holds the key to prevent unleashing total
annihilation.
The mysterious Cardinal Bellinelli plots against the Black Shirts and the
Gens Collective to spark a war between the Gens and humanity he
believes will eliminate the Gens species on the planet. Does the
Vatican hold the answers Adam seeks? Which side will the Vatican
choose and why?
Murder, treachery and betrayal combine with unexpected twists and turns, as
events pit friend against friend, family against family, and species
against species. Nothing is as it appears to be, and new discoveries
shed light upon old grievances.
The Black Shirts and their charismatic leader, Saldana Ri, develop the
means to destroy the rival Gens Collective and humanity, but will
they unleash the devastation? Can they? What explosive secrets does
Saldana hide that could destroy her leadership and shift the balance
of power back to her rival, Paulo Fortizi of the Gens Collective.
With the means of destruction of humanity complete, it’s a race against
time to prevent genocide on a global scale. Can Adam stop the
impending holocaust? Can anyone?
With the fate of mankind and the Gens Nation hanging in the balance,
forces array against Adam and his teams trying to prevent the
conflagration that could signal the demise of intelligent life on the
planet.
New tech, new weapons and new adversaries, along with new powers never
thought to exist, entertain the reader throughout the novel. New mind
journeys and psychic powers begin to reveal themselves as both the
savior and destructor of humanity.
My Review
When I was a young girl, I dreamed of going on safari in Africa. Then, I got older, read some books and saw some movies, and changed my mind. They say the odds are low you’ll get attacked by a shark while swimming in the ocean. I live on the Gulf Coast and have seen what lurks under the water and I don’t swim in open water anymore. I figure the same goes for trekking around Africa, especially after dark, when things come out to hunt. A diverse group of people do just that and get more than they bargained for.
I’m big on character driven stories and that’s what this was all about for me. Sure, something hunts them. But it’s how they react, who steps up and who turns tail that feeds this horror fan.
So, the characters. A father, along with his blind little girl and her grandmother. A washed up movie mogul and his aging trophy wife actress. A bully and his timid wife. The Maasai brother and sister tour guides. There’s more to them than meets the eye.
The author puts his characters into the worst possible situation and strips them down to the bare bones. As they try to get back to safety, they’re tracked, hunted by something that taunts them. Just out of sight, but always there. Then the attacks begin. It’s raw, brutal, and almost beautiful to see these character’s true colors come out.
Who survives? It’s anyone’s guess.
Did I enjoy this book? Most definitely. From the opening page to the final face off.  Would I recommend it? Sure enough. And I’m already reading The Haunted, another thrilling book by the author.
My Review
Samantha cuts her losses and returns home. She purchases the old Halstead House, a crumbling mansion she always dreamed of living in and hangs her litigator’s shingle. But, it’s not all smooth sailing. Major repairs are needed on the house. She’s juggling a tenuous reunion with her sister, and a mother and nana that butt heads over every little thing. And someone she’s desperate to escape from isn’t ready to let her go. Long kept secrets are coming to light and Samantha’s life and that of those around her are up for grabs from those who’d rather let sleeping dogs lie.
This is an author who keeps on giving. It seems like one dilemma gets resolved and three more pop up. So many ways to take down three generations of women. So many skeletons in thee closets. Lots and lots of skeletons. Wanting to come out.
Same for those bent on taking down Samantha and those she loves.. It’s exhausting to me how these desperate character’s wouldn’t give up. If one scheme didn’t work, they’d come up with another even crazier one.
All of the character’s make mistakes, some worse than others. And they all move like chess players, trying for the best advantage and the ultimate prize of winning. I was continually set back on my heels as one thing after another came to light. And it makes me wonder what I’d discover if I shook my family tree.
Halfway through the book so much had already happened I couldn’t imagine how the second half could have much more to reveal. Well, turned out there was. Plenty of suspense and thrills kept the story moving at a fast clip. All the way to the nicely wrapped up ending.
Did I enjoy this book? Yep. Every scheming bit. Would I recommend it? You better believe it. There’s never a slow spot or a dull moment.
Author Ashley Fontainne
Award-winning and International bestselling author Ashley Fontainne is an avid reader of mostly the classics. Ashley became a fan of the written word in her youth, starting with the Nancy Drew mystery series. Stories that immerse the reader deep into the human psyche and the monsters that lurk within us are her favorite reads.
Her muse for penning the Eviscerating the Snake series was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Ashley’s love for this book is what sparked her desire to write her debut novel, Accountable to None, the first book in the trilogy. With a modern setting to the tale, Ashley delves into just what lengths a person is willing to go when they seek personal justice for heinous acts perpetrated upon them. The second novel in the series, Zero Balance. focuses on the cost and reciprocal cycle that obtaining revenge has on the seeker. For once the cycle starts, where does it end? How far will the tendrils of revenge expand? Adjusting Journal Entries answered that question: far and wide.
Her short thriller entitled Number Seventy-Five, touches upon the sometimes dangerous world of online dating. Number Seventy-Five took home the BRONZE medal in fiction/suspense at the 2013 Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards contest and is currently in production for a feature film.
Her paranormal thriller entitled The Lie, won the GOLD medal in the 2013 Illumination Book Awards for fiction/suspense and is also in production for a feature film entitled Foreseen.
Ashley’s decided to delve into the paranormal with a Southern Gothic horror/suspense novel, Growl, which released in January of 2015. The suspenseful mystery Empty Shell, released in September of 2014. Ashley will be teaming up with Lillian Hansen (Ashley calls her mom!) to pen a three-part murder mystery/suspense series entitled The Magnolia Series. The first book, Blood Ties, released the Summer of 2015.
Whispered Pain released in October of 2015 and Night Court released December 13, 2015.
Denis is about to prove why his rep is legendary in the spirit world.
Someone knocked at the door.
On a Sunday afternoon? If it was a Girl Scout, she’d be disappointed. My entire liquid
income consisted of the twelve dollars and three quarters in my wallet. I
pulled off the Roman collar, so she wouldn’t get a bad impression of priests in
general and unbolted the door.
It crashed open with a blue-green-flowery gust of wind. I spun around and slammed it shut. My
messenger bag stood ready within arm’s reach on the kitchen table. All I had to
do—
“It is ridiculously cold outside. Where is your fireplace?”
A black-haired woman as tall as—no, taller than me by an inch or two—strode into my living
room and back again.
“Bah. Are you a herder of reindeer that you can stomach this cold without a fire? I am not. I
require heat and coffee and food.”
Her flowered dress looked more suited to August than late March. Her windblown hair reached
below her waist, the fluorescent light striking midnight-blue highlights from
it. The colors of her energy reminded me of something, but I couldn’t place it.
“Look, whoever you are, I didn’t invite you here.” I opened the door, which put me even nearer
to my messenger bag. “Out.”
She laughed.
One beat: I flipped open the front of the messenger bag. Two beats: I snatched the squeeze
bottle I kept holy water in. On the third beat I popped the nozzle and squirted
the perpendicular strokes of a cross at her.
“Merda.” She shivered and vanished.
Whatever she was, she moved faster than most entities. As I repacked the holy water, it hit
me that she’d said “shit” in Italian not like she was angry. More like she was
annoyed because I’d gotten her dress wet.
About Author Kate Morgan:
Baker of brownies and tormenter of characters, Kate Morgan celebrates the the day she jumped the wall with as much enthusiasm as her birthday. She grew up watching Hammer horror films and Scooby-Doo mysteries, which explains a whole lot.
When she takes a break from inspiring nightmares, she writes ex-nun PI mysteries under her real name, Alice Loweecey. In her spare time she can be found growing vegetables in her garden and water lilies in her koi pond.
.
(It’s confusing, I know. Facebook wouldn’t let me create an author page under my own name, so I had to use my MC’s name. Branding. It’s so much fun.)
My Review
Ollie comes into a bit of money and, on impulse, he buys a rundown house in a seedy neighborhood. In no time he has run ins with the neighbor. The music coming from next door plays into the wee hours. So loud he can’t sleep. And the parties spill over into the back yard, getting on his last nerve. When he finally decides to do something about it, the description of a bad neighbor gives this story a whole new twist.
Ollie went from annoyed to out of control in a heart beat. I wanted to grab him by the collar and shake the crap out of him. He was impulsive, reckless. Ever watched a movie or read a book where the character does something that makes you wince? You don’t want to see it or read it, but you can’t stop? Well, this guy is all kinds of are you nuts and shy in the smarts department.
After a slow start and accepting the fact I wasn’t going to warm up to the main character, things picked up and I settled in to finish the book.  Some twists and suspenseful scenes made it worth pushing through to the end.
Into The Mist
by Lee Murray
Genre:  Horror
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
A hot, steamy jungle. people with their own agenda’s, and something big and ravenous stalking them. Sure does sound fun. And it was.
 The author’s descriptions immediately put me in the jungle with the character’s.  All of them have to deal with the harsh environment. But, that’s not the only problem. Something huge, primordial stalks all of them, and it’s right at home in the jungle. Perfect camouflage until it strikes, leaving not much more than blood splatters to show someone was ever there.
I’m always looking for stories where the character’s have to struggle against the environment as much as the creature stalking them. And I liked the mythical aspect when the local legend comes into play. Made for a deeper, more thrilling reading experience for me.
This would be great to see on the big screen. I’d have to buy the DVD. It’s a keeper.
Synopsis
“Cinematic and evocative, Into the Mist is a tension-packed expedition into primordial terror.
Murray’s writing had me feeling the damp of the forest, seeing the mist curling through the fern fronds, and sensing the danger lurking there.
Ancient myths, military men and scientists placed in remote, primordial locations – it had all the right ingredients for me, and it didn’t disappoint for a moment.
Lee Murray is an author to watch.”
– Greig Beck, best-selling author of the Arcadian series
When NZDF Sergeant Taine McKenna and his squad are tasked with escorting a bunch of civilian contractors into Te Urewera National Park, it seems a strange job for the army.
Militant Tūhoe separatists are active in the area, and with its cloying mist and steep ravines, the forest is a treacherous place in winter.
Yet nothing has prepared Taine for the true danger that awaits them. Death incarnate.
They backtrack toward civilization, stalked by a prehistoric creature intent on picking them off one by one. With their weapons ineffective, the babysitting job has become a race for survival.
Desperate to bring his charges out alive, Taine draws on ancient tribal wisdom. Will it be enough to stop the nightmare? And when the mist clears, will anyone be left?
“Creepy and addictive, Into the Mist is an irresistible tapestry of military action, dark myths, and an ancient and terrifying horror. A must read for speculative fiction fans.”
Manifest Recall
by Alan Baxter
40186239
Genre:  Supernatural / Crime Thriller
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
I’m going to compare my reading experience to a horse race, as that’s how it felt to me. The horses are loaded  into the starting gate. The excitement and uncertainty build. Then the gates open and the story thunders down the track, galloping to an explosive, bloody ending.
Loading the gate: Eli comes back to awareness behind the wheel of a car, a girl in the seat beside him. At least she’s not in the trunk anymore.
In the gate: As Eli untangles his memories of horrific events he also has to deal with some dead men. Ghosts seem to be haunting him and they could be a hindrance or his downfall.
I like when the author presents a bad guy and I end up pulling for him. Eli is a hitman and has killed plenty of men. But I couldn’t help but hope he would win the day.
The gate opens: It’s a mad dash with some bloody, pulse pounding scenes that reminded me of the final showdown from the movie The Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze.
The finish line: A blue ribbon ending.
Did I enjoy this book. Oh, yeah! Would I recommend it? Very much!
