My Review

They must have seen the movies, read the books. Yet these five friends think it won’t happen to them.

Clearly something will and does.

The legend is, if you survive the night, you receive untold riches.

The temptation lures them in.

There’s safety in numbers, right?

Then it all goes south and everyone is scrambling to get out.

I never get tired of these stories. I was thinking of Scream, the movie, where they go over all of the rules of what not to do.

If these characters had any sense, they’d know not to go in that house, but then I wouldn’t have had such fun reading what happens to them.

Synopsis

This short story is about five students on Halloween night who discover the secrets and terrors of the town’s most infamous haunted house. Will they live to see the morning?

What Adam Wants

by Michael Hebler

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Mr. Hebler has done it again. He’s given us another short horror story that feels like a long one. I’m always amazed at how well he can plop me right into a story at the beginning, just like the opening scene in a movie.

Welcome to dysfunction junction. Rachel and David recently lost their baby, Adam.  It’s the beginning of a downward spiral for their marriage and a descent into hell.

All of their dreams are shattered and so is the silence. Rachel hears Adam crying and soon David does too. Adam’s cries get more persistent. Rachel must figure out what Adam wants.

There’s not much time to feel sympathy for these two. Shock gives way to grief, then numbness, then anger. You can imagine how they direct that anger. It’s not pretty.

And then there’s Adam. You know how ear piercing a baby’s cries are. Imagine them getting louder and louder until it feels like your head will explode.

The ending is a kick in the pants when you find out what Adam wants.

Author Michael Hebler

Michael Hebler

Prior to becoming an award-winning author of his dark fiction Chupacabra Series, Michael was a full-time international film publicist who had worked on multiple titles for Walt Disney, Pixar, Lionsgate, Lakeshore Entertainment, Warner Bros., Summit Entertainment, and the 2013 Academy Award-winning Best Foreign Language Film, “La grande bellezza” (The Great Beauty).

Born in the early 1970’s in Los Angeles County to a salesman and homemaker, Michael dreamed of following his passions for entertainment and storytelling by acting. It was while studying theatre arts at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, did he realize his penchant for stories were better suited on the page rather than the stage. But creating tales with suspense, laughter, and heart is not Michael’s only love. Hebler also enjoys volunteering in his local community, as well as aid in the capture/spay/neuter/release feral program.

To date, Michael’s publications include NIGHT OF THE CHUPACABRA, CURSE OF THE CHUPACABRA, and LEGEND OF THE CHUPACABRA (Books I, II, & III of the six-part Chupacabra Series) as well as his first publication, THE NIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS, a holiday picture book for believers of any age. Michael’s fourth book in the Chupacabra Series, DAWN OF THE CHUPACABRA will be available in print and for ebook on October 13, 2015.
Michael currently resides in Southwest Florida.

My Review

One twist after another in this short tale of a man in search of his son.

Right from the beginning, I knew something wasn’t right. Perhaps because I’ve read several books by this author, I was forewarned.

A man and a boy around a campfire, in the night. Doesn’t sound so bad. Until the man starts to threaten the lad, demanding to know where his son is, what he’s done with him. Twist number one.

As you learn about earlier events, twist number two occurs.

And when you reach the end, the final twist.

Coming in at last than 20 pages, it sure packs a wallop.

The cover art is perfect. Such a show and tell about this dark little story. You’ll see when you read it.

My Review

This is written as a story in a story.

The author opens with an old man sitting in his rocking chair sharing a story with his two grandsons. A story about two young boys and an evil beach.

Seth and Junior stumble upon a cave, and being boys, they dare each other to enter. Inside, it is dark and creepy, but as they continue further into the cave they see light and step through to an isolated strip of pristine beach.

beach cave photo: Cave cave.jpg

At first, they are thrilled to have their own secret beach but when they turn around, something written on the rocks invites and warns them. It’s almost like a dare, so of course the boys attempt to do what it says, building something in the sand.

What seemed like a lark became their worst nightmare and and soon they had to return to the cave and the beach, pursued by something out of their nightmares.

I’m very much into character driven stories and am amazed at how well the author developed his in so few words. The old man and grandsons didn’t even have names, yet I could see them sitting on that porch, the boys rapt as their grandfather spun his tale.

And Seth and Junior, the two boys in the tale, reacted just like you’d expect them too. They believe they are invincible and grow up fast when they discover they aren’t.

A well written short story that captured me from beginning, to middle, to end.

The author ‘pulled my leg’ with his twist at the end, tying the two tales together.

My Review

Vin’s always wanted to drive the mint condition Chevy Chevelle, so when his friend Mike suggests they take his uncles car out for a joyride he doesn’t hesitate.

Vin shows up at Mike’s uncles house with the beers and Mike produces the house keys. They enter the house and grab the car keys, not noticing a slip of paper that blows off the desk, revealing a strange book with a glowing pentagram on the cover.

Once in the garage they feast their eyes on the mean looking car. Painted black and tricked out with a red racing stripe, the car looks almost evil.

They hop in and quietly ease the car out of the garage and down the road. Nobody notices them. Too bad for Vin and Mike.

I had an idea the car was supernatural when the book with the pentagram was revealed. I couldn’t wait to see what it would do.

It took control and those boys had a joyride like no other.

I couldn’t help but think of Stephen King’s movie, Christine. That was one evil car and I thought this tale would follow along that story line. The plot was different but the chills it gave me were the same.

Buckle up because there is a bonus short story, Sandy and the Stranger, included with Joyride.

As Sandy and his Chevy Nova once again prove he can’t be beat, a stranger challenges him to one more race.

I wonder if you’ll recognize the stranger?

It’s a haunted drag race on an abandoned road.

When the smoke from their burning rubber dissipates, the victor appears.

Or so it seems.

Both of these are quite short. Didn’t take me long to read them.

Muscle cars, evil, and ghosts make both tales scary good.

I’ve always been fascinated and scared sh%!tless by stories of possession. I went to see The Exorcist when it came out and didn’t sleep good for years afterwards.

This poor man is possessed by a legion of demons. They will not leave. He weakens. They linger.

Not able to exorcise the demons, the people took him to a cave and chained him to a bed.

Three priests then arrived. They prayed over the man. They fought the demons. The battle waged on.

At around 20 pages, this only took me a few minutes to read. I’d love it if the author took this and made it into a full length novel.  I’d like to know who the possessed man was. How he came to be possessed. And who the heck the three priests were. They were something else.

It’s really short but packs a punch!

Welcome to My Monday Minis Reviews.

If you’ve been following my blog, I’m sure you’ll recognize this Author. I’ve read all but a couple of his stories and loved them!

For today I’ll be sharing Trailer

A Short Story by Edward Lorn

24863425

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Edward Lorn is a master of the short horror story. This one is no exception.

It’s not fit for man nor beast with a nor’easter raging outside, but Kay has no choice. She left her husband lying in a pool of blood, the frying pan she used to kill him sticking out of his face. Bullying her was one thing, but abusing her son, Tony, a boy with Down Syndrome, was not to be tolerated.

Now, on the road in the middle of the night in a blinding snow storm, Kay must find shelter from the storm when the car breaks down.

Her son had spotted a mailbox a ways back so they find it and follow a narrow path through the trees to a decrepit trailer.

But, before they can get to it, something rises from the snow. Something white, with glowing silver eyes and very sharp teeth and claws. Soon. more rise out of the snow and it’s a race to get to the trailer.

But will the trailer be protection from the screeching beasts outside?

Well, you know I can’t answer that question.

I’ll tell you this though. The beasts are determined to get inside and eat them up and the trailer has been long abandoned and falling apart.

The best thing about Edward’s short stories is his characters. He has this ability to flesh them out quickly. You feel you know them. But don’t get too attached to them. He’s not above knocking them off for a good scene.

Must not forget his creatures. They are all uniquely his own creations and bloody nasty too.

Edward Lorn is an American horror author presently residing in the southeast United States. He enjoys storytelling, reading, and writing biographies in the third person. Once upon a time, during a session of show and tell, a seven-year-old Edward Lorn shared with his class that his baby brother had died over the weekend. His classmates, the teacher included, wept while he recounted the painful tragedy of having lost a sibling. Edward went home that day and found an irate mother waiting for him. My Review

I’m always looking for the next Edward Lorn story and the minute I heard this was available I hopped over and bought me a copy.

The first thing that happened was I got confused.

The opening was not anything like the book description and I thought I might have got a messed up copy. But then it became clear. I was inside Jimmy’s head as he was playing a make believe game. A fun and interesting beginning and it introduced me to his vivid imagination.

Jimmy and his two best friends are roughing it. They’re going to spend the night in his tree house, no adults allowed. Should be a fun night of loud music, games, and doing what young boys do.

Since losing his mother, Jimmy and his dad have been coping, supporting each other and beginning the healing process.  When his dad tells him they have to come inside if the approaching storm begins to thunder, Jimmy agrees with no argument.

It’s not long after the boys enter the tree house that it begins to rain, So far, no thunder or lightning so they get out the games and crank up the music. As the rain continues, they are drawn to the window by the sound of the neighbor’s cows bellowing in pain. When nothing further occurs, the boys go back to their game.

In the morning, the storm is gone and the dew sparkles, so Jimmy is startled when one of his friends crawls out the window onto a tree branch.

What could make him so desperate? What scared him enough to make him leave? Where did he go? The two remaining boys soon see for themselves and now it’s a race to survive the dew.

After the unique beginning to the story, the author doesn’t take long to build an atmosphere of suspense. You know the storm is coming. You suspect something is coming with it. You encounter that something. Then it’s all fear pumping action to the end.

I wish I had as vivid an imagination as Jimmy did. Then I could have had a mental image of the things that came out of the storm. Perhaps it’s better that I didn’t.

You easily become familiar with the characters, the writing flows smoothly, and the ending isn’t predictable. Plus you get some out of this world creatures. All scary good.
