Book Description:

Readers everywhere will revel in this sharp-witted, well-meaning whirlwind in author Dina Silver’s hilarious new novel, Kat Fight. In her quest for love, Kat makes every wrong turn, juggling two men, one best friend, and her own deeply confused heart’s desires.

Kat Porter is a consummate romantic, eager for her chance to find love and commitment. But after her boyfriend of four years, Marc, begins to grow apathetic and sends her calls straight to voicemail one too many times, Kat finally musters the courage to confront her so-called sweetheart, who seems more interested in dodging her than courting her. Though she’s no fan of ultimatums, Kat is at the end of her considerable wits, and lobs a massive one his way, completely confident that he’ll make the right decision when faced with losing her. He doesn’t.

With radio silence from Marc, Kat’s lifelong dream of finding a husband and forging a family is decidedly on the skids. That’s when her childhood friend Julie steps in, forcing Kat on a blind date to help her move beyond the break-up. Not only does Kat botch the setup, she instead finds herself in hot pursuit of Julie’s love interest, Ryan Sullivan. A man who, in addition to literally taking her breath away, is the living, breathing personification of everything Kat wants in a husband.

Can Kat connect with the man of her dreams without hurting two of the people she cares most about? At the same time, she must also contend with the quips of her beloved catty coworker Adam, her bi-polar boss Brooke, and a string of comic, unpredictable plot twists. All the while, Kat’s cheeky perspective and generous heart will leave readers adoring every moment of her journey while chuckling and cheering for the ever cute, razor-sharp Kat as she fights to land the love of a lifetime.

My Review

Kat’s tired of the waiting game, of the empty promises. Marc has done it again. No phone call and no show. When she tells him to lose her number and she never wants to see him again, I’m thinking, “Go girl!”

So now she’s alone, checking her phone constantly to see if Marc has called. He hasn’t She really needs to move on. Or so her friends tell her.

At least they are supportive and do their best to console her.

When a new man enters her life, the troubles begin. Her best friend, Julie, had first dibs, but Ryan is interested in her. She’s sneaking around with Ryan and it’s going to get back to Julie. Time to fess up.

This book is fun, fun, fun. I felt like I was on a laugh track, playing over and over. My sides hurt. I literally flew through this, the writing was so smooth. The only bumps were Kat’s, and there were plenty of those.

One of my favorite characters, besides Kat, is her BFF Adam. They are tight, like peas in a pod, with no worries of romantic tangles. He’s gay and very involved with her boss.

The interoffice antics of these two is hilarious and it just keeps getting better. I loved this text message between the two.

Kat: I look down as someone is texting me. It’s Adam.

Take a picture.

He texts.

Take a hike.

I respond

He’s watching you.

Adam informs me.

For real?

I ask.

Yes, quit slouching.

He orders.

I’m going to look at him.

I text back and sit straight.

I’m going to pretend I care.

Adam answers.

The text messages and conversations between these two were some of my favorite parts of the book.

Kat’s juggling too many secrets and when she fesses up to Ryan, he wants to step back, take a break.

Kat’s crushed and runs to Adam for a shoulder to cry on. His response:

“…Fine, but don’t pull your little ‘I’m too sad and rejected to call Adam’ routine like you did last night. I want details on this one. Train wrecks like this don’t happen everyday you know.”

She should have known he’d pull the tough love thing.

“Good Lord, you need a hobby.”

Kat’s not a quitter, she’s a fighter and she wants Ryan!

boxing gloves photo: Boxing Gloves box.jpg

“Gloves on, pride off.”

I started reading this at about 9 P.M. on a Friday night. I can stay up later reading then. I was so engrossed I had no idea what time it was when I turned out the light. Got up early Saturday, my favorite time for reading, made a cup of hot tea at 5;30 A.M. and started right back in. I had to keep heating up my tea because I forgot to drink it.

If this book was a television show, I’d tag it as a ‘sit’ com, but actually it had me almost rolling on the ‘floor.’ I kid you not.

Five Stars for Kat Fight!

Wicked funny and out and out delightful.

I love short stories and collections and was ecstatic when Donna published these! A Human Element still lingers with me and I’ve been waiting for a while now to read the sequel, A Hidden Element. The Dark Inside has me even more excited now. You get more of some of the old characters and are introduced to many new ones.

Check out the giveaway after my review.

The Dark Inside (A Human Element)

The Dark Inside

These short stories contain characters from A Human Element and the soon to be released sequel, A Hidden Element.

The Well

It seems like no matter how hard he tries, Caleb can never be good enough in his father’s eyes. When he hears about the mission to the new world, he jumps at the chance to escape the dying planet and maybe get out from under his fathers disapproving control.

When his hopes are crushed, he’s devastated. And then his mother goes missing.

She’s disappeared without a trace.

The Well starts out being about Caleb and his conflicts with his father and his peers, and deepens into a mystery when his mother just vanishes. The author does a great job of misdirecting me, and I rushed to a wrong conclusion. This one is a deep, emotional read.

 The First Time

X-10 is not going to give in. He’s not going to let the twisted Dr. Bjord control this experiment.

He’s scared of the human girl. Not for the usual reasons, but because he’s afraid he’ll give in to the rip, tear, kill, urges that are the base part of him.

It’s the first time X-10 has coupled with a female and he experiences some human emotions like nervousness, lust, and excitement. But can he control the monster inside, the one that needs to rend?

Donna, through her characters conversations, made the tentative bond between the monster and the prostitute endearing for me. I wanted things to be okay, wanted both of them to survive this experiment.

But she’s a prostitute, he’s a monster, and this is an experiment. A deadly one.

The Job

Felix is a Seeker. His partner, Maria, is all woman, all human.

He’s never felt attracted to her before, but he’s made a mistake. He’s let his guard down and things got messy. Now he has to clean it up.

I was surprised a couple of times with this one. Had a few, ‘what the???’ moments. This is twisted fun. Can’t help it. I sometimes laugh at the dark stuff.

Frat Night

Tara’s so excited. Tonight she’s going to do it with Jonah. She’s been lying to him, telling him she’s a virgin, so he’ll woo her, romance her. But she’s ready now. Tonight they’ll finally be together.

It was a beautiful spring night.

Kind of saw some of this coming, but still got a shock. I was grinning and thinking, yes!

The Tree of Sheltered Secrets

She was going to kill whoever did it. Whoever cut down her tree.

She’d spent her childhood hiding in that tree, escaping into her own world. It was the only happy memory in her miserable existence. And now someone had hacked it down. It felt like she’d been cut down too.

Someone had to pay.

I felt sorry for Hilary. She had a horrendous life and now the only thing good was gone. I felt her rage build and as I read on, I wanted someone to pay. Pay big!

The Beginning

They were seventy-five strong. Adrian and his crew silently entered the chosen town and quickly got what they needed with mind persuasion. No one realized the strangeness of these visitors.

But that wasn’t enough for Adrian. Oh no. He had to go and make it nasty, make two people do despicable things just for his pleasure.

He also made his son Caleb and the others watch. It was a warning and a lesson.

This one is so twisted. Adrian is a sick twist and I feel so sorry for Caleb. His hate for his father is changing him. Molding him. I hope he doesn’t follow in his fathers dark footsteps.

A Lucky Strike

Ben is all alone with his foster-father now. His foster-mother is now buried and Frank expects him to take over her duties. All of them.

As Ben fantasizes about ways to kill Frank, he knows it’s only a matter of time before things turn real ugly.

It’s time to flee, but has he waited too long?

I forgot this part in A Human Element. It’s disturbing and sad. You see where Ben came from, what he endured, what shaped him.

I’m surprised he survived at all.

Excerpt – A Human Element ~ Ben

This is an excerpt from A Human Element. It’s another short about Ben taking place later than in A Lucky Strike. I’ll give a tease and tell you what I got from it.

Ben had no business being in Hud’s Place.

“North of Hotel Street in Chinatown, or NoHo as it was called, carried its distinction as the known spot for prostitute action any time of the week. He swallowed the last of his beer and laughed to himself. SoHo could be a better name for the so-many-ho’s that could be had around here.”

He shouldn’t be here. He shouldn’t have got so drunk. And he definitely shouldn’t have stepped into it with the Marines.

If he thinks the ass-kicking he just got from them was bad, the locals that get a hold of him, set him straight.

If it weren’t for the tall man, the familiar looking stranger with the bright green eyes, he’d be totally screwed.

Ben just keeps putting himself in bad situation after bad situation. I hate seeing him in the self-destruct mode.

I’m curious about the tall man, why is he always showing up at the worst times? Why is he following Ben?

Seeing a character falter, make bad moves and stupid ones, helps me connect with them, makes them human for me. I’m connected with Ben.

I enjoyed all of these stories. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be…..Ha! Not gonna tell ya!

The Dark Inside gets Five Stars from me. Each story is distinct and wrings out my emotions.

I’ve already reviewed TAKEN, but figured I’d repost my review for ya.

I am thrilled to get my hands on this! While I don’t normally use the blurbs for a book, this one is so good I have to share it with you!

Jack Harden is your average good-old-fashioned American truck driver. You can ask the girl he’s got duct-taped in the back of his cab, she’ll tell you. Oh, don’t worry – it’s okay. His wife knows all about it. She told him to do it.

Whoa. I bet that got your attention.

Jacks’s wired and tired. He’s on the last leg of an 18 hour burn and turn. Soon he’ll be with her. With his goddess. With Dianne.

“Dianne, Dianne. Oh sweet goddamn Dianne.”

At first he didn’t think he could go through with it. He’s not the type. But if he wants to go home, he better have his cargo. Can’t go home without it.

She’s all wrapped up, well,  taped up, nice and tight. She won’t be getting away. What Dianne wants with her, he hasn’t a clue. But he’ll know soon enough.

What really got me was how nervous and bumbling Jack was when he snatched the girl. It had me on edge,  hoping he’d get away safely. I was actually on his side. You know the story’s good when you’re pulling for the bad guy.

As for the victim. Well, lets just say she’s not a wallflower. She’s got a mouth on her and plenty of bravado. Jack had better be careful with this one. She’s a kick-ass chick and her one liner, you’ll know it when you read it, is every bit as good as Arnold’s, ”I’ll be back.

I could picture the author chuckling in evil delight when he was writing Taken. It’s psychological horror that messes with your mind.

Can’t wait for you to meet Dianne.

A short, wicked good read.

The Corpus Corruptum

Review coming soon.

About the author

Adam Light

Besides being the best father and husband I can be, my ultimate goal in life is writing horror fiction that will knock people’s socks off.

I began the journey into writing for the public in the fall of 2011, and I have not looked back since. I admit that I got a late start on it, as I am pushing 40 now, but I believe that an eleventh-hour commencement is preferable to none at all.

I have self-published five short stories to date. The most recent one entitled THE CONTINUANCE AGENCY is the first chapter in a planned series still in progress. This one is a departure for me, and comes as a refreshing turning point in my writing. I look forward to writing longer works, my long term goal being to write full length novels.

I have been humbled and emboldened by all the positive responses to my stories, and thus encouraged to continue my quest. Thanks to all who have read and reviewed my work, giving an unknown author such as myself a chance to unleash my madness upon you.

Foreword

In 2009, I kissed my children goodbye and deployed to Iraq.

I thought deploying would be the hardest thing I’d ever do.

I was wrong.

Coming home from war is not an event, not a solitary moment on the parade field. I never knew what it would take to walk through my front door and become a mother after a year away.

This is my story of coming home from war. Of kissing my children and learning to be their mom again. Of taking command of my company and growing up from a smart-mouthed lieutenant to more thoughtful commander. Of being a wife at the end of the war.

A mom. A soldier. A writer. A wife.

If you’ve been following the journey thus far, thank you for joining me again. If you are reading it for the first time, I hope you enjoy.

Unprepared

December 27, 2009

When you get home from deployment, the Army sends you through all of the reintegration training. Some of it is worthwhile, a lot of it is a waste of time and even more is a check-the-block exercise. I understand the intent behind it, but frankly, I didn’t need or want most of it. There was, however, one class that I really got a lot out of and it was taught by the chaplains. They discussed reintegrating with your families and I paid attention because honestly, I’ve been worried about reuniting with my kids.

They talked about expectations and reactions and how you and they are different now than when you left home. I knew all this but I still paid attention. There was a lot of anticipation within me about seeing my kids and getting the family back together.

I thought I was prepared.

So when we’re in the middle of a busy rest stop in New Jersey last night and my youngest starts crying out of the blue, I wasn’t prepared to hear why she was upset. She had real, painful tears, the kind of crying that sounded like her little heart hurt. When I asked her what was wrong, she sobbed, “I don’t think you love me.”

It was not a fake cry. It wasn’t even a cry for attention. And I had no idea how to react. Instantly. I started crying. In the middle of a rest stop, with people wondering what the heck was going on, I was trying to get my oldest’s coat on her while trying to get my youngest to understand that I did love her and I had missed her.

My husband freaked out when he walked up and saw me and our youngest both in tears. My oldest rested her head on my shoulder and told me she knew I loved her. But none of that helped until I could make my youngest understand.

It was a brutal episode and one I did not expect. They tell you about the babies not knowing you or your grade school kids wanting to talk incessantly but nothing prepared me for my three year old’s confusion and true heartache.

It’s better today. She’s back to normal and so am I, but the pain from last night lingers. So today, I’m hugging both of them more than telling them I love them. I’d already been doing that but apparently, it wasn’t enough to make up for a year of no hugs and no close “I love you’s.” The web cam was good but it wasn’t enough.

I don’t know if I can ever make up to either of them being gone. I don’t know what else is coming.

 DANNY

Ryan is waiting for me and as I get closer to him, I appreciate just how enormously tall he is in his skates. I sure hope he’s steady in them because just a few feet from him I launch myself into his arms and wrap my legs around his waist. He’s wearing too much gear for my legs to wrap all the way around him but his hands are firmly gripping my ass to hold me in place.  I plaster my mouth to his and he kisses me back with abandon, squeezing me tight.

I move my mouth to his neck and nibble there.  “I’m so proud of you, Ryan.”

He groans but says, “Danny…I’m all gross and sweaty.”

“I don’t care,” I say as I work my way back to his mouth. After kissing him lightly there, I murmur against his lips, “I plan on getting sweaty with you a lot in the future.”

Ryan whips around and crushes me to the wall with his body and thoroughly claims my lips with his. Eventually, he pulls back and I’m thankful no one has walked by us yet. “You know it makes me crazy in lust with you when you say things like that.”

I smile coyly at him and stroke his face. “Ryan…what are we waiting for?” I know my eyes are full of yearning and I hope he understands the depth of it.

Charlie Wright is an ordinary seventeen year old, high school girl. Well, if by ordinary you mean she can see demons and she likes to fight…a lot, then Charlie is your girl. Rather than taking a one-way trip to juvenile detention, Charlie chooses to join a mysterious group called The ForeverLand Alliance. And then her life gets really weird.

Charlie is magically transported to an alternate universe. In Semper Terra, no one ages, people fly and mermaids frolic in the translucent blue seas. But it’s not all fun and games. For Charlie is training to become an Annihilator, a select group of Semper Terrans who protect mankind from all of those things that go “bump in the night”.

It’s only when Charlie finds herself stuck in the middle of a prophecy that could bring about the end of the world that she truly begins to understand the deep sacrifices she will have to make.

War hardened and dangerously ruthless, Carrick Dunne, will stop at nothing to save his country from an evil sorceress who has usurped the royal throne. As he leads his army to battle against the darkest of blood magicks, he finds himself aligned with the passionate woman whose love he betrayed four years earlier.

Ava Clairmont lived a peaceful life in Wyoming, blissfully unaware that she was the heiress to a kingdom embroiled in a vicious war. Now, Carrick has brought her home. Fighting side by side with the sexy warrior that broke her heart is only complicated when their incendiary desire for each other re-ignites. Can the power of forgiveness overcome the hurt of betrayal?

Smokin’ hot and firmly entrenched in bachelorhood, Kieran Dunne has realized his life has become somewhat boring as of late. But after being recruited by his Queen to recover a stolen, magical artifact, his life gets turned upside down as he embarks on an adventure to catch a thief.

Nightclub owner, Annika Foss leads a solitary life in New York City and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Unfortunately, she is forced to help Kieran in his mission to recover the artifact and finds herself jumping dimensions with him as they work together to solve the crime.

See what happens when two fiercely independent people who shun love are thrown together in a daring mission to help save the world of Vyronas.

I’m thrilled to hear there will be a fourth book in this awesome series, Cold Blood. This is great news!

Warning: This is the third book in the series. I’ll try not to put in any spoilers.

Here’s a bit about the book:

Vampire Emma Hammond and her best friend and roommate Tammy Torres have rarely had a disagreement, but that’s all about to change. Apart from hating each other’s boyfriends, the duo have more monumental problems to deal with, like controlling Emma’s growing and increasingly dangerous bloodlust and trying to get blood stains out of the carpets. And when new witch Tammy joins a coven whose leader’s lust for power knows no bounds, Emma is unwittingly pulled into their plan.

My Review
In this third book, the witches are the main players.
Our furry friend David is present and, of course, Emma is the star.
Em brings her wry wit and humor to the story. I swear she can’t stay out of trouble. And she has her hands full with scheming witches and Alex is sniffing around again. He is persistent and still wants Emma. Just, now isn’t the right time, not when the head of the vampires, who is his boss, wants her dead.
.
Emma’s having a hard time controlling her thirst. She does a big no-no and drains a certain someone to death.

This may be my favorite part of the story. The way it happened and how Emma dealt with it had me cracking up. She is truly becoming more vampirish with each book, leaving more of her humanity behind.

Witchy little Amy sure grows up fast. She’s quite the clever young thing and pulls a fast one on everybody.

Best friend, Tammy, has problems with Em. Tammy understands Em’s a vampire, but wishes she had better control. There’s no excuse for what she did.

These two roomies are like soul sisters. I hope they can patch things up.

“Who would have thought that when we met, almost twenty years ago, that we would end up like this?”

“You mean as being two supernatural creatures we thought didn’t even exist?”

“Yes, that. And also living together and being just as close as we were the first day we decided to trade Barbies.”

I remember my very first best friend and the hours, days, and years we stuck together like glue. The closeness between these two makes this story genuine, makes it come to life.

Must not forget, there are some big surprises in store for you, and a few witches you’ll want to bitch slap. You’ll know who.

When I read the last page I didn’t want it to end. And then I discovered the author had added the first chapter of Cold Blood, the next book in this series. It is so freakin good! I can’t wait to read the entire book.

Donna, you are such a tease! Write fast:)

5 Stars! Bring on Cold Blood!

Emma Hammond is a normal young woman living in New York City whose life changes forever when one misstep brings her very close to death. Luckily, Alex Thompson, a handsome stranger (who also happens to be a vampire), jumps in to save her, turning Emma into a vampire. She quickly discovers the numerous advantages (no more allergies, glasses, or acne) and slight drawbacks (wanting to eat her boyfriend) of joining the ranks of the creatures of the night. But Emma soon finds out her new undead life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be when she gets pulled in to an age-old dispute between two feuding vampire clans.

Wild Blood (Vampire in the City #2)

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Recently-turned vampire Emma Hammond is not only getting used to her undead lifestyle, but also to living with her new and unlikely roommates–her human best friend Tammy, and David, a werewolf. While the girls speculate as to possible drawbacks to having such a fuzzy tenant (shedding and marking of territory, to name a few), nothing will prepare them for the dispute that is to come between the NYC clan of vampires and an upwardly-mobile werewolf pack from the suburbs. Will Emma be able to get out of it with both her undead life, and her blossoming friendship with David, intact? And, perhaps more importantly, will she be able to choose between Alex Thompson, her sire and sometimes lover, and James, a slightly-unhinged vampire with a mysterious past?

  Loved it! Howling for more!

Donna also was so generous and allowed me to have a giveaway for each book and she took time out from her busy schedule to sit down for an interview. She also let the roomies stop in for an interview. We had a lot of fun and I hope to have Donna and the girls back again!
