I wish I was a supernatural being requiring no sleep. Not an ugly one, of course. More like a vampire. Then I wouldn’t be so far behind in my reading. I could read 24/7 if I wanted to. Which I do!
I have World of Ash, the first book in this exciting series. It’s just the kind of story I love. And I HAVEN’T read it yet! Ugh! Not enough hours in the day.
And now, Time of Ruin, Book Two, is releasing. I love a series and have got to get started on this one.
I have the awesome cover art for ya and my favorite excerpt.
Plus, there’s a giveaway. So don’t forget to enter!

There were several excerpts to choose from but I liked this one the best. Enjoy!
.

With a shaking hand, I pull my water bottle from the netted pocket and take a few sips, reluctantly controlling myself from gulping down half of it. Once my mouth is pleasantly wet, I hold the bottle out to Blue and let him take a few sips. I’m happy the mouth is wide so I don’t need to spill any out for him.

The last thing I want to do is to dig through my pack and get out Blue’s bowls and kibble, so I pull out a can of beef stew, my last can of the blessed protein-and-carb packed stuff, and pull the tab to open it. “We’ll share, okay?”

Blue sits on his haunches, back perfectly straight, as he watches me. I know it’s a leftover trick from his first family, but it makes me smile.

“Me first,” I say and point at the ground.

With a short whine, Blue lays on the ground, resting his chin on his paws as he watches me tilt the can to my mouth. Eating only half of the stew isn’t as hard as I thought it would be; my stomach is so tight with worry over leaving Dylan, over the trail of smoke in the distance, and my need to find transportation that I’m not as hungry as I should be. I have to choke down the last bite of mealy potato before I hold the can out for Blue. He has no such difficulty eating the other half of the stew, and in minutes, he’s licking the inside of the can clean.

“Pig,” I tease as I toss the can away. Blue ignores me and lays down to clean his paws.

I let my head fall back against my pack. My eyelids are heavy, and it’s increasingly more difficult to keep my eyes open. I click my tongue for Blue, and he jumps to his feet in an instant. I chuckle and snap my fingers for him to come to my side. With his warm body tucked in close to me, I lay one hand on his back and let sleep pull me under.

I don’t know how much time passes before I’m awoken by a sound that I know neither I nor Blue made. My eyes snap open, and my whole body goes instinctively still. I hold my breath so that I can hear better. Blue shifts under my hand. He picks up his head, his ears perfect triangles as he listens for the unfamiliar noise. I grip the loose skin at his neck and make a tiny noise to keep him quiet.

Somewhere a twig snaps, louder than any shot fired.

Not for the first time, I miss the farmhouse where I found Blue, with its intact walls and locks on every door. I bite the inside of my cheek, wondering if I can get to the edge of the wall and away from here before whoever is walking up the steps comes around the corner.

A dim yellow light creeps across the floor underneath the dresser we’re hiding behind. My heart is choking me, lodged high in my throat, and all I can hear is the beat of my pulse and the rush of my blood.

“Yeah, this is good,” a man’s voice rings out, striking me like a whip.

I’ve missed my chance to run.

Synopsis

.

There are two inherent truths in the world: life as we know it is over, and monsters are real.

The Pestas came in the night, spreading their pox, a deadly plague that decimated the population. Kat, one of the unlucky few who survived, is determined to get to her last living relative and find shelter from the pox that continues to devastate the world. When it mutates and becomes airborne, Kat is desperate to avoid people because staying alone might be her only chance to stay alive.

That is, until she meets Dylan. Dylan, with his easy smile and dark, curly hair, has nowhere to go and no one to live for. He convinces Kat there can be safety in numbers, that they can watch out for each other. So the unlikely couple set off together through the barren wasteland to find a new life – if they can survive the roaming Pestas, bands of wild, gun-toting children, and piles of burning, pox-ridden bodies

MY REVIEW

Micah. Ella.

Hers. His.

Mine.

When I started this series, it appeared the sex demon’s curse and their mating tattoos bound these two so tightly. Now I wonder what would happen if neither of these things were in play.

Micah and Ella have a chemistry and emotional bond that is so strong, I think they might have come together on their own.

Ella is now Queen of the vampires. She ascended after killing the previous queen, a psycho who, though frozen in the ageless body of a young girl, was anything but. I think she never aged that much emotionally either. Maybe that explains her murderous temper tantrums and vicious impulses. She darn near killed Ella’s sister Hannah.

It’s almost time for Ella to go before the Shadow Agency . They want her head, believing she drank from a human. She did, kind of. Micah is part human, but he’s also part demon, and a discovery about Micah’s mother and maybe identifying his father could save her life.

Many are dying as Ella struggles with her new role as vampire queen, and to top it off, she’s gone girly. That’s something I never expected out of her. She’s a no frills, no regrets, stone cold killer, and no one messes with her. I wondered how Micah would take this side of her. Heck, I wondered how she would.

Hannah, Ella’s younger sister, is mostly recovered after suffering the horrendous torture from the previous vamp queen, and Micah’s brother, Eli, feeling himself not worthy of her, has driven her right into the arms of hot lion shifter, Dante. And they have a surprise for everyone.

And this is where I also got a surprise. Something crazy happens to Ella and the following scenes are insane. There is so much blood shed, so much pay back, and so much insidious mind play, I was glued to the pages. I was reminded of Akasha from the Queen of the Damned movie. So beautiful, so deadly, so without any restraint. There was one person who I felt had it coming to him, and for a long time. If his fate had been played out on the big screen, I would have had to peek between my fingers to get through it. Whew!

Micah may finally learn the fate of his mother and the identity of his father. The council may finally get Ella’s head on a platter, and nasty Julian’s self-serving manipulations may cost many innocents their lives.

Wolves and vamps come too close to each other and fur may fly and fangs may drip blood.

And Micah and Ella have their battle of wills in and out of the bedroom, which makes for some steamy romance and fun dialogue.

Never dull. Never slow. I gulped down this story like a glass of chilled ice tea on a hot, muggy day. And my thirst was satisfied for now. But it will be back, wanting more.

.
The worst moment of Micah’s life was when Ella nearly died in his arms. Her miraculous recovery should have been the start of their future. Unfortunately, a new demonic heritage, the Shadow Agency’s corruption and Julian, the vampire who turned Ella, are testing their relationship. Despite hotter-than-ever sex and a variety of new places and positions to explore, Micah begins to wonder if a relationship based on lust can survive for more than a few scorching-hot months.
Ella has forgiven, but not forgotten, the fact that Micah once plunged a dagger through her heart. Everything with Micah is passion, excitement and an uncontrollable desire to explore his body in a variety of very satisfying ways. But as buried secrets, ongoing lies and murderous deceptions pile up, Ella is reminded that she and Micah’s relationship was based on a curse. In order to forge a future together, Ella and Micah will have to face down their personal demons—and prove that love and trust are more than just words.

Blurb
Ella Grey’s life sucks. A half-breed vampire, she does her best to pass the time killing demons and secretly admiring her Shadow Hunter partner, Micah. He’s hot, dangerous and knows it. He’d be just Ella’s type if he weren’t likely to kill her the moment she put a toe out of line.

A chance encounter with a succubus changes everything. From the second the succubus’ spell washes over them, Ella and Micah are helpless to keep their hands off one another. The sex, when it’s not leaving them on the verge of death, is earth shattering and for the first time in ages Ella is connected with someone on a level she’d feared lost forever. But a dangerous prophecy has been set into motion, and if Ella’s not careful it’ll pull her straight from Micah’s arms and into the deepest bowels of the underworld.

Created in Darkness and born of Death, three brothers carry a deadly secret.

One lethal enough to have the dead outnumber the living. Necromancer. Biohazard. Zombie. The abomination inside Bastian Hale demanded constant payment—fresh blood. Without it, he’d rot from the inside out and become little more than a mindless monster. Some called him a living vampire, others considered him contaminated. One woman would call him hers.

Morgan Cross never understood the innate necromancer power running through her veins or why ghosts and zombies sought to ruin her life. MY REVIEW

Imagine not being able to touch yourself or others for fear of punishment. Imagine a world where so many have died from bacterial infection that it’s now a law, strongly enforced, of no touching of any kind.

We already see signs of this in some countries. People going out in public wearing face masks and gloves. Sanitizer stations in business entryways.

The author approaches this clinically and emotionally.

I couldn’t imagine not being able to kiss my babies face, hug a friend, or even wipe the tears from my own face.

For those born before the outbreaks, old habits die hard. It’s a slip of the mind to reach up and scratch your nose if it itches, and if you are spotted, you’re reported and punished.

Enforcers and Sterilizers are recruited and put in place supposedly for your own protection. This is where big brother thinks they know what’s best for everyone. And putting fear into the equation makes most people go along with their mandate.

But there are some who feel differently. Who secretly break the rules. Who dare to want more.

I don’t read reviews for a book until after mine has been published, but I’m betting a lot of people have said the same thing. This could happen and it might not be too far off. How often do you turn on the news and hear about this or that food product being pulled from the shelves because it’s contaminated? How people have sickened from it and even died?

The author approached this scenario with a dystopian and science fiction genre. At least that’s how it felt to me.

While I didn’t have a favorite character, there was one I wish had chosen a different employment, and three I wish could have prevailed together.

The ending is deeply moving. Profound.

I enjoyed this glimpse into a possible future and highly recommend it.

Isolation depicts a bleak but recognizable future in which the fear of contagion reaches a fever pitch as a bacterial epidemic catapults the US into an apocalyptic crisis.

Touch is outlawed. Mothers like Maggie bind their infants’ hands, terrified they might slip fingers into mouths. Gary, a Sterilizer, uses robots to scour the infected, avoiding all contact with human flesh. Trevor, the Chief Enforcer, watches, eager to report any and all infractions.

One inadvertent touch will change all of their lives.

Praise for Isolation:

“I was fortunate enough to read a preview copy of Isolation and I have to say it is a timely and thought provoking, if not haunting, look into the future. I can’t imagine simple day-to-day tasks like getting food at the market being either impossible or dangerous. Written from a variety of perspectives and far-reaching communities, it kept the reader wondering, “Could this really happen to me? Could this be part of my world?” This book made me look into the foods I eat, the lifestyle I live and the value of my friends and family. To what extent would I go to keep those I love safe? Looking for answers kept me turning the pages.”– Michelle Keeton

“Denise Stephenson’s novel Isolation is situated in a not-too-distant future, one we can all imagine, in which bacterial diseases decimate human populations world-wide. Though other novelists and filmmakers have relied on viruses to frighten us with tales of pandemic diseases, Stephenson makes bacteria seem much, much more dangerous—in part, because the vast majority of bacteria we come in contact with are necessary for our survival. For one thing, we can’t digest food without the help of bacteria in our stomachs.

In Isolation, government agencies struggle with the question of how to isolate the dangerous bacteria from the life-saving sort. Eventually, hospitals are turned into Anti-Bacterial Centers, robots are used to cleanse individuals who are exposed, touching one’s face is banned, then touching others is banned, and finally everyone is quarantined inside their own homes in a final, desperate attempt to stop the spread of the lethal bacteria. It’s a frightening vision, but each step, each decision, makes perfect sense in light of the threat of contagion.

It’s a gripping tale, at once outrageous and yet plausible. Through news articles, a scientific report and a press release inserted throughout the novel, Stephenson reveals how woefully unprepared American society is for this sort of calamity.

In spite of the doomsday vision the book presents, it remains hopeful and optimistic by focusing on the lives of individuals. In the direst of circumstances, their humanity, their compassion, and their hope shines through.”– Bob Mayberry

“Isolation” paints a bleak picture. In order to keep humankind safe, the government imposes increasingly stricter bans on touching. From Do-not-touch one’s own nose and eyes to, in the end, the Total-Touch-Ban. People live in ever more isolation; at times, confined to their homes like prisoners.

While the prospect of living in, or even reading, about such a world may not sound appealing to everyone, Stephenson’s lovingly created characters, who accompany the reader from the present to a future two to three generations away, confirm that our species can adapt and survive.

Stephenson’s care to give each of her main characters a distinctive voice makes, in turn, the reader care about them; and that is what makes “Isolation” a pleasure to read.”– Irene Gerold

“Isolation gripped me. It’s a mesmerizing dystopia about the quiet and deadly menaces in our lives. These dangers may be hidden in the jargon of the latest government health report, lurking under the frilly curl of a romaine lettuce leaf, or triggered by a minor cut to a finger while using an ordinary kitchen knife. The characters in Isolation are people I know. It was easy to imagine myself as a sister, friend, or neighbor to any of them – or most of them.

I was in the story wondering, “What would I crave? What would I do for my family and my friends? Isolated, what could I do to fight back?” These questions linger.

The story is well paced, well written, and scary. Stephenson’s research is excellent. It provides a persuasive foundation for explaining why the home-bound isolation of the population becomes the awful solution for stopping the spread of disease. The story compelled me to mull my complacency about the safety of our food, drugs, and government promises to always protect our freedom.“- Karen Baum

EXCERPT

“You came,” she whispered. “You really came.”

What was wrong with me and attracting crazy women lately? I frowned and picked up an angel.

Male, in jeans and a tee, features blurred in a way that made my stomach clench.

“I didn’t realize I was expected,” I said sourly, putting the damn thing down again. Glancing towards

her, I caught the way her hands knotted on the grubby apron around her waist.

“I didn’t…expect, but I hoped. I prayed.”

Oh, God. I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Look, whoever you think I am you’re sorely mistaken. I

was just passing. On my way to the Laundromat.”

A small smile curved her lips. “You must be very new if you think that will work. Don’t you realize I

can see them?”

“See what?”

“Your wings.”

My what, now? “Pardon?”

“Your wings.” She smiled again, her eyes fixed at some point just behind me. “They’re exactly as I

dreamed them.”

I took a step away from the crazy lady. I needed to change my cologne, demand a refund or

something. Why the hell had I even come in here? So much for indulging a passing ironic interest.

“Uh huh, course you did.”

She gave a high-pitched giggle and rolled her eyes. I moved back another step as she wavered closer,

but her attention was on the counter and the angel I’d picked up. The creepy, featureless one that

made my skin crawl.

“The wings were very clear, your face wasn’t. That was disconcerting. I usually see very clearly.”

What I saw clearly was that I needed to get out of there. Oxygen was suddenly in short supply, the

walls that surrounded me solid and overbearing. An old but familiar panic crawled up my throat,

choking me.

“I’m not what you think I am,” I told her, wincing at the desperation that colored my tone.

She just smiled and fondled the angel. I tried not to look at it, afraid of what I’d see.

The ironic thing was that I’d dropped everything and bussed a few hundred miles in an attempt to

avoid this very meeting. I didn’t believe in fate, but something had pulled me here. The idea terrified

me and I did what I always did when faced with anything that remotely resembled responsibility.

I ran.

Strangers On A Bus

by Rob Manary

Strangers on a bus New Cover 2A black white

Genre: Romantic Comedy

If you liked When Harry Met Sally, you’ll fall in love with Robb and Gertrude from Strangers on a Bus…

Robb is crushed by a failed relationship with the love of his life and finds himself unexpectedly on a long bus trip from his adopted home in the U.S. back to his native Canada.

At the first stop in NYC, a girl gets on and so begins a contemplation of life, love, and strange events that will bring tears of laughter and heartache streaming down your face.

Is this girl Robb’s real true love or just a rebound? How far can they get on a bus ride anyway?

This is a true story.

*

*

~Excerpt~

The sun started to come up as we crossed into Canada, and Gertrude told me we wouldn’t be making out once it was daylight. Lip dancing on a brightly lit bus was too “tacky” for her, and besides her lessons were having a not entirely unpleasant side effect on her.

I find it best to try not to understand women at all. But, there is one phenomenon that causes me more confusion than any of the other baffling behavior women indulge in.

When you tell a woman something and she doesn’t believe you, so you tell her the opposite, and she doesn’t believe that either, I like that.

So, you tell her the first thing you said was, indeed, the truth, and she doesn’t want to believe that one either.

Confused?

So am I. Here is the latest incarnation of this occurrence.

Gertrude: “All this kissing isn’t bothering you? You’ve got more restraint than any guy I’ve ever met. I thought you would have been trying to feel me up hours ago.”

Me: “Would it have worked?”

Gertrude: “Maybe, probably not. I think it’s nice. You’re a gentleman.”

Me: “Not really. Every time we stop I take care of that in the bathroom.”

Gertrude: “You’re such a pig! You washed your hands right! You’re so gross! You didn’t! Did you?”

Me: “I thought I was a gentleman! I lie! I lie! I lie! Of course I didn’t.”

Gertrude: “You’re such a pig! You did! Didn’t you? You’re so gross!”

Me: “Stop laughing at me if I’m so gross! I didn’t! I didn’t!”

Gertrude: “You did so! You’re such a pig!”

Me: “Okay. Fine. I did.”

Gertrude: “No you didn’t! You’re not that big a pig. Close. But no. You didn’t.”

Me: “I tell you I didn’t and you say I did. I tell you I did, and you say I didn’t. You’re such a weirdo.”

And then I kissed her, because the sun was rising quick, and because I couldn’t see another way to end that conversation. It is possible that debate could have gone on indefinitely, and there was no way I could prove conclusively what I had or had not done in a bus stop bathroom.

After what might be our last extended lip dancing lesson Gertrude whispered in my ear, “I was horny and wanted Dicky-bird…that is fun to say, so in the bathroom… I did.”

~About the Author~

Robert Manary is an international playboy and man of mystery, with the charm and sophistication of James Bond shaken not stirred with a couple ounces of Cyrano de Bergerac, a dash of Rasputin, and garnished with the rapier wit of Thurston Howell the Third.

That’s how he sees himself, anyway.

The truth is Robert Manary is a construct created to protect the dubious reputation of his Clark Kent like mild mannered writer/puppeteer/the man pulling the levers and breathing life into the Great and Powerful Oz (don’t look too closely behind the curtain).

Robert Manary’s alter ego dropped out of Radio Broadcasting College to pursue a lucrative career bartending at a seedy gentlemen’s club, played around stocking shelves at a small grocery store until he screwed up badly enough to be given a promotion, and finally left the glamorous life of fighting with Parmalat representatives over the quantity of soy milk required for a small Northern Ontario town to function adequately, for the bright lights of New York.

Divide Banner 450 x 169

I’ll admit it. The cover drew me to this book. I didn’t even peek at the synopsis. So I was surprised to discover this was a fairy tale retelling. I’m glad I didn’t know, as I approached this with no preconceived expectations.

Now I understand the cover art and love it even more.

Please read further. I have my review for you along with the complete first Chapter.

And there’s a fantastic giveaway, so don’t forget to enter!

MY REVIEW

Not having read the book description before I started reading Divide, it took a while for me to realize this was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

There is a beautiful girl. There is a beast. But they are one and the same. They are Holland.

Holland’s world came crashing down when she was betrayed by her boyfriend and her best friend. They fell in love and her dreams went up in a puff of smoke. No three musketeers heading off to university together. No romantic adventures with her boyfriend. No late night girl talk with her best friend.

Just a void where her heart used to be.  An empty shell of the girl she used to be.

And there’s the other thing. The thing inside her, waiting to come forth. To claim it’s place. The only way to save what is her, Holland has to fall in love. Love will break the curse.

I tried to put myself in Holland’s place. How could I fall in love when my heart was shattered, my self-esteem was at rock bottom, and I was mad at the world. How could I trust someone after such a deep betrayal?

Mick and Holland are good together. He makes her laugh in spite of herself, and I began to see a glimpse of the girl before the heartache.

I kept thinking, this is a fairy tale retelling. The author is free to tell the ending any way she wants. So maybe there will be no happy ending. Maybe Holland’s heart is broken forever. Then what will she become?

The tension built as Holland began to change earlier than expected. Time was running out. The beast was coming.

The writing was easy to follow allowing me to read this book straight through without a break. The dialogue was well done too, no confusion as to who was speaking. And Holland’s thoughts helped clarify things. Helped me to connect with her and care about her.

The author created a great love interest for Holland. Mick was funny, tender, patient, and determined. I held out hope for these two.

You don’t have to be a fan of fairy tales to enjoy this book. It’s only loosely based on the original and the author created her own version. One I liked very much.

Synopsis

From senior class president to dejected social outcast, with just the flick of a match.

After accusations of torching her ex-boyfriend’s home are followed by the mysterious poisoning of her ex-best friend, seventeen-year-old Holland Briggs assumes her life is over. And it is. But not in the way she thinks.

As Holland learns the truth about her cursed fate—that she is descended from the Beast most have only ever heard of in fairytales—she unites with an unlikely ally, good-looking newcomer Mick Stevenson.

Mick knows more about Holland’s twisted history than she does, and enlightening as it is to learn about, his suggestion for a cure is unsettling at best. Holland must fall in love with Mick in order to break the spell, and save their future generations from repeating her cursed fate. Having sworn off love after the betrayals of her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend, this may be difficult to accomplish.

Complicating things further for Holland and Mick, time runs out, and Holland’s change begins way before schedule. With Holland quickly morphing into a dangerous mythical creature, Mick struggles to save her.

Should they fail, Holland will be lost to the beast inside her forever.

Chapter One

Holland

The girl looking back at me didn’t seem half as broken as I felt. She was beautiful, confident, sure of herself. A mask I’d worn for years out of habit, and more recently, necessity.

With a sigh, I slammed my locker door a bit harder than I’d meant to, shutting the magnetic mirror away for at least another hour. At least until I returned for more books between my next two classes and found myself staring at that pretty face again.

She was any magazine’s idea of perfection.

So unlike what lurked just under the surface.

I felt it. Moving around beneath my skin, waiting, calculating—counting down the days.

“Holl! Wait up!”

“Merde!”

I turned around to see my little brother heading toward me. The broad smile on his face pushed away my dark thoughts. With only eleven months between us, Cameron was busy enjoying the hell out of his junior year as I trudged through my senior. With way less enthusiasm.

Although, this time last year I’d felt differently. So much changed in a few short months.

“You cussed in French again, sis. People are going to think you’re a freak.”

I raised an eyebrow at my brother. “Seriously?”

As if saying a bad word in French would cause people to think I was a freak any more than all the rumors flying around about me.

Cam waved off my question with a flick of his wrist. “You ditching at lunch today?” he asked, pulling on his black and gold letterman’s jacket.

“No, Cam. That was just one time. Mom and Dad will kill me if I lead you down the path of destruction.” I over-emphasized the words the way our dad had so frequently.

Cam laughed and threw his arm around my shoulder, giving me a light noogie with his free hand. “If they only knew, huh, Holl?”

He leaned down and kissed the side of my head before he headed off to meet his water polo buddies. He may have been younger than me, but he’d already outgrown me by about six inches or so.

I headed to Physics, dreading what I’d find when I got there. The same thing I faced every day. I took a deep breath, straightened my back, and jutted out my chin. Walk in like you own the place. I repeated my mom’s advice for the millionth time as I entered room thirty-two and faced him.

As if it wasn’t enough that Rod had broken up with me two days before homecoming this past October—leaving me both broken-hearted and painfully dateless—I had to see him and Leslie draped all over each other every day in not just one, but two of my classes.

Just get through the year.

As I did every day, I walked past them without making eye contact and sat down at my desk. I pulled out my notebook, flipped it open and started my daily doodling. Somehow, I could excel at Physics with my eyes closed and a somewhat shoddy attendance record.

By the end of the period, Leslie had only glanced back at me four times. A new record. If this continued, then maybe she’d only look back at me once by the time Spring Break arrived, and no times at all by the time the school year ended.

Then I’d be out of Crappo Valley for good and could move on with my life. Maybe I should have switched schools like my parents had suggested. It sounded appealing, but it wasn’t like my fame would stay safely inside the walls of Capistrano Valley High School.

No, my fame would follow me. I had no doubt about that.

I waited for everyone to leave the class, then slowly headed for the door.

“Hollie? Can I talk to you for a minute?”

I closed my eyes, unable to believe it. She waited for me outside the classroom again. I don’t know why that surprised me, just that every day I hoped she’d change her routine. We’d gone over it a thousand times. Her pleas and my responses never changed. Would she ever stop?

“Hollie, please look at me.”

I slowly opened my eyes and repeated my mantra in my head. Like you own the place.

I faced Leslie and waited. She was neatly put together, as usual: dressed in a mint cashmere sweater, paired with a slightly-darker mint pleather skater skirt. I didn’t have to look down to know her toenails were impeccably painted in a contrasting yet complimentary pastel shade. Leslie’s blazing red-orange hair was pulled back into a perfect ponytail, with not even a single strand out of place. Though some would wonder how she created such a sleek hairdo, I knew her secret—Tres Flores hair pomade with massive amounts of Aqua Net. She’d die if anyone knew she used those products.

She’d also die if anyone lit a match within a five mile radius of her hair.

She licked her lips in preparation to speak the same tired words she’d spoken a million times. I fought the temptation to recite her speech for her, but she’d cried last time I did that, so I refrained. One of us had to be the bigger person. Or something like that.

Plus, her eyes already glistened the warning of yet-unshed tears. Ugh. I hated this.

“I miss you.”

I felt my jaw tighten at her words. Fact was that I missed her, too. And I missed Rod. And I missed my childhood spent with the two of them. My two best friends.

“We didn’t mean for this to happen. Please believe me. What can I do to fix this?”

Right on schedule, a tear slipped past the gate, sliding down her pale, freckled cheek. I watched the watery descent and began the same retort I’d repeated a million times.

“Look, Leslie. Just stop, okay? Do us both a favor and move on. You and Rod are in love. I get it. You didn’t mean to hurt me. Fine. But you did. And you can’t fix that kind of betrayal.”

I turned and walked away, not wanting to hear any more apologies. How many would I have to hear? I think I’d paid my dues and suffered enough. After all, I wasn’t the one who went behind her back with her boyfriend of four years.

I’d lost the two most important people in my life and she was the one crying? Ha.

I made it to the bathroom before my tears fell. I hadn’t let them really see how they’d broken me yet, and after four months, I sure as hell wasn’t going to start now. After checking to see that the room was empty, I huddled in the handicap stall and cried as quietly as I could, surrounded by graffiti-damaged gray walls, perfectly fitting for my mood.

When the bell rang a few minutes later, signaling I was late for my next class, I pulled out my compact and looked at my face. Puffy eyes. Fantastic. The red nose I could blame on the cold February winds, but the puffiness was a dead giveaway.

I focused on my blue eyes for a moment; sure I could see it if I only stared long enough.

I know you’re in there.

My eyes had started to change, the blue of my irises slowly seeping away. Only slightly, but enough that I could see the transformation. They were dull, grayer in color than they used to be. Surely, if anyone noticed, they’d probably just attribute the change to my depression.

I knew differently. Something wrong lived inside me, something that wasn’t fully me. Something foreign. Though, what it was, I had no idea.

The main bathroom door opened with a swoosh, followed by the loud thumping of heavy footsteps. I heard each stall door open with the bang of a fist against the metal door, and a swoosh-clank as each door flew inward and slammed against the toilet paper dispenser. One by one, the doors opened as the person made their way to me.

Bang

Swoosh

Clank

Repeat

When the cacophony stopped, black boots—with flat soles that had to have been a good five inches tall—parked right outside my stall. Squatting, with both feet up on the lid of the toilet seat, whoever stood there couldn’t see me. But the previous nine stall doors slamming open were plenty indication of what to expect next.

I climbed off the toilet lid and stood, unwilling to be caught off guard, even though I absolutely already was. I waited.

She cleared her throat.

Screw this. I wiped my tears from my cheeks. Like you own the place, I reminded myself. I opened the door and took a step back so I could see this psycho chick, whoever she was.

“Hey, Holland, right? I’m Rosemarie Stevenson. I’m new here.”

Her feminine name and sweet-sounding voice were in stark contrast from her strange clothing and door-punching habits. And her boots had more buckles than a straitjacket.

I almost laughed when I noticed that her face wasn’t nearly as scary as I’d assumed it would be. My gaze travelled down, from her tutu-corset thing-a-ma-jig, to her ripped purple and black tights, down to her crazy-ass boots. Then I brought my focus back to her face, and my head tilted slightly on its own accord. She was actually really pretty.

For a crazy chick in a Halloween costume.

The purple glitter eye shadow made her irises seem almost violet in color, and her jet black hair was cropped short and somewhat jagged. All she lacked were some sparkly fairy wings.

I peered over her shoulder, just to make sure wings weren’t fluttering behind her.

Her arm was still outstretched in front of me. I glanced at her black-tipped fingernails and ignored her awaiting hand, instead deciding to ask the pressing question.

“If you’re new here, how do you know my name?”

“Oh, please. You’re Holland Briggs. Aren’t you, like, famous around here?”

“Yeah, well, if you’re wondering if I burned a house down with my ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend inside, you can wonder no longer. I just had last period with both of them, and they’re as fine as ever.”

I pushed past her, irritated that she was new here and already knew the rumors that I’d hoped to one day live down. How people could think I tried to kill Rod and Leslie even after they both returned to school and hung out with these idiots every day, I had no idea. Add to that Leslie’s daily pleading fests, and it was any wonder how people could still blame me, when she clearly did not.

“Wait! Holland! I’m sorry. We got off on the wrong foot. Can we start over?”

I spun on my heels and faced the new girl.

“Okay, Rosemarie, was it? I appreciate that you’re new here, and by looking at you I can see that you wanted to align yourself with the biggest freak in school, but I tend to keep to myself and don’t need any crazy-ass fangirls, okay?”

Her mouth fell open, but I didn’t care. She’d get over it.

I slipped out the door and back into the hallway, heading not for the cafeteria, but instead for the senior parking lot. Turned out I was ditching for lunch at Harbor House after all.

When I got to the car, Cam waited for me, his infectious smile already making me feel better.

“I knew you’d change your mind.”

I shook my head and slid into the driver’s seat of my red VW Cabriolet. Cam climbed in on the other side and tried to roll down his window, even though he knew from trying every single day before this one that it was a lost cause.

“Sure glad it’s cold out today because I can’t seem to get my window to roll down,” he said. “I don’t know why you insist on driving this car. You know Mom and Dad will get you whatever you want. Maybe even something from this century.”

“I love this car. It was Mr. Greenburg’s, and he trusts me to take care of it. Plus”—I waved my hand around the old interior—“character.”

Cam scoffed.

“If you hate Penny so much, why do you insist on driving to school with me?”

As soon as the words left my mouth I regretted them. We both knew why Cam hardly ever left my side, and I hated bringing it up. I was past it, but no one else seemed to think so. My little brother had sort of taken on the role of bodyguard, confidant, and babysitter. Always making sure poor Holland wasn’t heading for the deep end again.

“So who was that weird fairy-looking chick that followed you outside?”

I quickly glanced back at the doors to the school as I left the parking lot, and sure enough, my newest fan stood outside watching us drive away. As I brought my attention back to the road, I turned the corner and my view of her disappeared.

“Some new girl. She heard about my experience with pyromania and wanted my autograph.”

“Nice! Did you give it to her?”

“Fuck off, Cam.”

“Nice again! Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?”

I glanced at him, his brown eyes sparkling. “I kiss your mother with this mouth.”

He groaned. “You do know that ‘your mama’ jokes aren’t funny when she’s your mom too, right?”

“Whatever.”

“So, was Leslie waiting outside for you after Physics again?”

“Is she ever not?” I asked, pulling Penny onto the freeway.

“Wow. She needs to give up already. But I have to hand it to her: she’s got a lot of nerve. And stamina. Nerve for thinking you’ll ever forgive her, and stamina for the relentless apologizing. I couldn’t apologize for that long, that’s for sure.”

“When have you ever apologized anyway, Cam?”

“Pssh, when have I ever needed to?”

Twenty minutes later, we parked in the lot behind the Harbor House Café in Dana Point. My stomach growled just thinking about it. Cheese fries and a chocolate shake: the lunch of champions.

Cam clapped his hands one time, his thoughts clearly mimicking my own, then climbed out of the car. He pulled off his water polo jacket, revealing a shirt that was about two sizes too small and stretched around his arms, showing all of his muscle definition.

“Your shirt. Are you serious?”

He flexed his bicep and winked at me, his brown eyes sparkling. “The ladies love it.”

I shook my head at his ridiculousness.

Cam ran a hand over his cropped brown hair, then matched his pace to mine and draped his arm across my shoulders. Clearly still stuck on Leslie, he asked, “Did she say anything different this time? Anything to change your mind about her?”

“What, like the past few months were all a big mistake, and I’ve only been dreaming that she slept with my best friend slash boyfriend? Nah. She didn’t say anything like that. I’m pretty sure this all actually happened to me.”

“Yeah, well, their loss, Holl.” He squeezed my shoulder.

“Yeah, their loss.”

Cam had said those words so many times, and I was pretty sure he believed it was their loss. I wasn’t so convinced anymore though.

Enjoy this glimpse inside Secrets of Hallstead House

I must have been so engrossed in my drawing that I didn’t hear

Vali come up into the turret room. When I looked up, she was standing

at the top of the stairs, watching me. I gave a start and her lips

curled in a crocodilian smile.

“Yes?” I inquired tersely. I was not pleased that she had come up

here and I wanted her to go away. She had broken the turret room’s

spell and I was feeling a little peevish.

“I came up here to see if I could clean. But I see you’ve taken it

over. You have a habit of doing that.”

“Vali, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I haven’t taken anything

over. If you’re still upset about my asking you to set two extra

places at dinner last night, then I apologize. But we couldn’t send

Brandt and Giselle out into that storm.”

“What I mean is that you’ve inserted yourself into this household

rather nicely. You walk around here like you own the place. I’d advise

you to remember that everyone at this house was here long before

you were.”

I didn’t know what to say in the face of this tirade. I was starting

to feel a little nervous up here alone with this woman. I tried to talk to

her calmly.

“Vali, I am here to do a job, just like you. And of course I’m aware

that I have the low spot on the totem pole here. I can assure you that

I have no delusions about my position on Hallstead Island.”

“You aren’t even wanted here. Why don’t you just go back where

you came from?”

Not this again, I thought. “Vali,” I responded evenly, “I was hired

to be Alex’s nurse. I am not leaving until she asks me to. Besides,” I

added, “I spoke to her just this morning and she assured me that she

wants me to stay.”

She said nothing but stared at me venomously. I met her stare and

tried not to flinch. She’s a bit unstable, I thought. I waited for her to

say or do something. Finally she spun around on her heel and left. I

listened until she slammed the turret door behind her, and then sank

back onto the sofa. What am I doing here? I wondered.

I was at a loss to explain why Vali and Will disliked me so. Pete

had warned me on my first day at Summerplace that I wouldn’t find

a warm welcome here, but I had no idea that the feelings against me

would be so strong. I laid my head against the back of the sofa and

closed my eyes, sighing deeply. How could I convince Vali and Will

that I meant no harm to anyone and that my only purpose at Summerplace

was to be a good nurse to Alex?

I didn’t have long to think, because I heard footfalls on the turret

steps again. My body tensed, waiting for another uncomfortable en-

counter with Vali, but to my surprise it was Stephan’s head that poked

into the turret room. He looked around and saw me on the sofa.

“Mind if I come up?” he asked genially.

About the Author:

Amy M. Reade is a debut author of romantic suspense. A native of upstate New York, she grew up in the Thousand Islands region and was inspired by the natural beauty of that area to write her first novel, Secrets of Hallstead House. She now lives in New Jersey with her husband, three children, a Bouvier des Flandres named Orly, and two rescued cats who refuse to answer to their names of Porthos and Athos.

Upon graduation from Cornell University and Indiana University School of Law, Amy practiced law in New York City, but soon discovered that her dream job was writing. In addition to volunteering with school, church, and community groups, Amy is currently working on her second novel, set in the area around Charleston, South Carolina.

Though Amy lives within sight of the Atlantic Ocean, she is partial to the blue waters of the Pacific and spends as much time as possible on the Big Island of Hawaii, which is the setting of her as-yet-unwritten third novel.

Lucas MacKenzie eBook Final

.

Lucas Mackenzie has got the best job of any 10 year old boy. He travels from city-to-city as part of the London Midnight Ghost Show, scaring unsuspecting show-goers year round. Performing comes naturally to Lucas and the rest of the troupe, who’ve been doing it for as long as Lucas can remember.

But there’s something Lucas doesn’t know.

Like the rest of Luca’s friends, he’s dead. And for some reason, Lucas can’t remember his former life, his parents or friends. Did he go to school? Have a dog? Brothers and sisters?
If only he could recall his former life, maybe even reach out to his parents, haunt them.

When a ghost hunter determines to shut the show down, Lucas realizes the life he has might soon be over. And without a connection to his family, he will have nothing. There’s little time and Lucas has much to do. Can he win the love of Columbine, the show’s enchanting fifteen-year-old mystic? Can he outwit the forces of life and death that thwart his efforts to find his family?

Keep the lights on! Lucas Mackenzie’s coming to town.

Using the crevice too, I retrieve the squirrel. It’s too tattered to donate to the Humane Society, so I decide to keep it.When I get up to go put it with his box of ashes, it squeaks.

I almost drop it. It hasn’t squeaked since it was new. Barnum and I played tug-the-squirrel almost every night and it never made a sound. I try to make it squeak again, but can’t.

Jeffrey’s words come to mind, talking about pennies, or other signs. What was it he said? It’s a message that “let’s you know your loved one’s okay.” Something like that.

I kiss the stinky, silent squirrel and feel my eyes start to burn. “I hope you really are okay, Barnum.” I set it on top of his box. “I hope I’m going to be okay, too.”

Synopsis

If you lost both your husband and your dog to cancer within weeks of each other, but you were sadder about the dog, would you tell anyone? Maybe your closest friends. Unfortunately, Jane Bailey’s closest friends are on the other side of the country. That’s where Jane plans to go now that she’s free to leave Philadelphia, the too cold, beachless, street taco-deficient city her husband dragged her to six years ago. But with no job prospects in her hometown of San Diego, Jane is roped into helping out temporarily at her uncle’s southwestern small-town B&B. En route to her new role as innkeeper and breakfast chef, she finds a stray at a rest stop. With her heart in pieces from the loss of her dog, she’s determined not to let this mutt worm its way into her affections. She’s also determined to have next-to-no interaction with the B&B’s irritating guests, and the even more annoying handyman who lives next door. Can Jane keep her sanity—and her secret that she’s not really a grieving widow—while trying to achieve her dream of getting back to the place she thinks is home?
