Judith Lucci is a Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Amazon Best Selling
author who loves to kill people – which is totally opposite what
she’s spent her life doing. “I love to think of heinous ways to
dispose of people – sometimes a lot of people- but it must be
creative. I don’t use guns very often but rather rely on my medical
background and research to figure out the best way to get the job
done. Bullets are just too easy. I’m sure a psychiatrist would have a
ball trying to figure out why someone who spent her life caring for
people and saving lives, now spends hours each day in the creative
pursuit of murder.”

One hundred years later, a disgraced young police constable is reassigned to the sleepy South African town of Unie, where she makes a terrifying discovery: the body of a young woman, burned beyond recognition.

The crime soon leads her into her country’s violent past a past that includes her father, a high-ranking police official under the apartheid regime, and the children left behind in that long ago concentration camp.

Brannon hides her magic from all but those closest to her for fear of
ridicule. After a red-hot encounter with the new PI in town, it is
impossible to deny their attraction. Throwing caution to the wind,
she indulges her desires but keeps her secrets close.
A man with secrets of his own, Howl Raven uses his feral talents and

the curse that haunts him every month. So far, so good…until an
uncontrollable shift outside the full moon leaves him the victim of a

howl excerpt

Enjoy this glimpse inside:

Ana parked her Jeep at the pump outside of Cooper’s gas station and shut off the engine. She reached across the seat for her purse and dug out her wallet. Taking a deep breath before abandoning the heat of her car, she stepped into the chilly dawn air. Severe storms were expected to roll in later in the evening, making the air thick, heavy and damp, like breathing through a wet blanket. By noon the temps would be in the sixties but after the front moved through they would plummet back to the forties.
Gotta love fall in Alabama.
She twisted off the gas cap, flipped the pump lever, and began filling the tank. Glancing around the parking lot, she noted two old Chevy trucks. The blue one belonged to Jace Murphy. He’d had it since high school. Ana sighed. She knew Jace, and the truck, well.
The Murphy brothers were pretty to look at, with a knight’s code of honor, but they were hell on a woman’s heart. At least Jace was. A part of her would always love him  and his ‘devil may care’ attitude just a little.
The chief’s Charger was parked near the diesel pumps. No doubt having another cup of coffee before turning on the 25 MPH school zone signs. Perfect. Just the man I needed to see.
She twisted the gas cap closed and went in to pay.
“Morning, Ana.” Cooper’s wife, Ruby, greeted her as she manned the counter.
“Morning.” Ana handed her a credit card, which Ruby slid through the machine before giving her a receipt to sign and closing the drawer.
Ana quickly signed the slip of paper and pocketed the duplicate receipt. “Where’s the breakfast crowd?”
Smiling she leaned in to chat for a minute. No matter what the owner of Cooper’s had to say, it was bound to be entertaining.
“They’re about a half-hour gone. Severe storms are predicted for tonight. Some are closing up early. Everybody’s trying to get their errands done before the rain comes in. What about you? Opening the clinic today?”
“Afraid so. I’ve got a full day of appointments scheduled, but I won’t be taking in boarders over the weekend. Just in case.”
“Well. Don’t get so busy you forget to bring in your hanging flowers. It’d be a shame to lose them to the wind.”
“I won’t.”
“Town council meeting is tonight, weather permitting, and if we’re still around to have one.”
Ana nodded and turned toward the dining area and what she liked to call the round table. Usually occupied by the morning regulars who came in to gossip before starting their day.
Cade Murphy, Shady Creek’s Chief of Police, gave her a little wave as he sipped his coffee and listened to his brother Jace complain about coming weather. Cade’s semi-formal uniform only added to his already disarming good looks. Along with their brother Drew, the triplets shared the same jet-black hair, olive skin and deep green eyes.
Since he had retired from the CIA, Jace preferred a farmer’s outfit of work boots, denim shirt with rolled up sleeves and jeans. Ana knew he was just as comfortable on the dance floor as he was on a tractor or slinking around foreign nations doing God-knew-what. He looked up and winked at her as she walked over to the table.
“Morning, gorgeous. Ready to walk down the aisle with me?” Jace teased.
She laughed when he wiggled his eyebrows, kissed her cheek and pulled out an empty chair. “I’d never survive the trip, Jace.”
“Maybe, but the ride would be worth it.”
“Oh, of that I have no doubt. Tempting, but no.”
She couldn’t be entirely sure he wasn’t serious. Ja-na had been a heat-filled year. Easy to recall the memories. It had been a hell of a ride and worth every minute. She sat in the chair next to Cade.
“Down boy, before I have to arrest you.” Cade smiled and finished off his coffee. “Morning, Ana. How’s my Sunshine?”
“Doing just fine. She foaled about two hours ago. A colt. Both are healthy. I figured you’d like to call Taylor yourself.”
Cade beamed. Sunshine, a beautiful paint mare, belonged to his best friend, actress Taylor Ross. She loved the horse fiercely, only trusting Cade to care for her while she was filming. Since Taylor was shooting pretty much all the time now, Sunshine had taken up permanent residence at the Triple Star. Taylor flew in as often as possible to visit with family and see her horse, but not often enough in her opinion.
The visits were always short and because of both of their schedules there was never time to truly catch up. Ana missed the long talks they had had as teenagers.
“Thanks. I’ll check in with Tay in a couple of hours. It’s still early yet.”
Something about the way Cade said Tay made her heart ache. Only he called her friend by the pet name. Longing and banked heat coated the word. She was pretty sure there wasn’t anything between Cade and Taylor, romantically speaking, but she suspected he might carry a torch for her. What would it be like to hear her name spoken like that, full of wicked promises and forever?
Ana glanced toward Jace. He had come close once, delivered on the promises in spades. Forever? Not so much.
“Right. Time difference. I always forget.”
The tinkling of a bell announced the arrival of another customer. Ana looked toward the door. The newcomer was tall, with black hair. His leather jacket and jeans accentuated a muscled but lean form. Sunglasses hid his eyes from view. He didn’t stop at the counter, instead making his way over to their table. “Sorry to interrupt, chief. Got a minute?”
“Sure. Have a seat.”
The stranger shook Cade’s hand before moving on to Jace. The scent of pine and crisp soap tempted her curiosity. Slipping off his glasses, he hooked them in the V of his jacket. He turned, his golden eyes meeting hers. A wave of pure heat swept over her. That’s unusual.
“Howl, this is Anastasia Brannon, our local vet and a close friend. Ana, this is Howl Raven. He’s the PI I’ve hired to look into, well you know.”
Ana smiled and held out her hand to shake his. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Raven.”
“It’s Howl and the pleasure is all mine, Anastasia.”
God, his voice was like the finest whiskey. Rich, dark and damning as it rolled over her name. The air changed at his touch. He didn’t shake her hand, instead held it warm in his just a second longer than was polite. She didn’t miss the frown on Jace’s face.
“Ah, yes. Likewise.” Flustered, she tugged her hand out of Howl’s grip. “Well, I hate to run, but I have to get going. Got a full day of appointments scheduled. Cade, tell Taylor to call me when she gets in. We need to catch up. Have a girls night.”
“Will do. Thanks.”
“Any time.” She retreated to the safety of her Jeep, but couldn’t resist a second look toward the door before driving away. He was watching her through the glass. She still felt his touch and ached for more. Howl Raven was a flash fire, instant and all consuming. And she was a moth to that flame.

My Review

I knew this would be a challenging read when I read the description. I love animals, all shapes and sizes, and it hurts to know that there are so many being inhumanely used for experiments. Not to mention the rampant cruelty and abuse that so many live with in their short lives. I can’t even watch those commercials on television, asking for donations to save abused animals. That being said, I still had to read this book. I wanted to meet these warriors of animal’s rights.

Jude trained her new recruit. Gave him an assignment to infiltrate a company to get evidence of animal cruelty. He was supposed to keep in touch. So she knew something was squirrely when he sent her some strange photos and didn’t respond to her repeated calls. It was her job to go check on him when he disappeared shortly after.

Jude’s first step upon arriving at the farming town of Half Moon was to visit Tim’s hotel room and see if she could find out what her trainee had discovered. Things move fairly quickly after that and the plot thickens. What did he uncover? Who was involved? And did Tim pull his own disappearing act, or did someone make it happen?

I feel I should mention that, while this story is about experimenting on animals, what is being done isn’t dwelt upon. The author doesn’t go into detail. It’s still heartbreaking to know, and there is one scene that had me so sad, but there are also some happy ones. I hope for many more for the animals out there right now. Waiting to be loved.

So many bread crumbs. So many dead ends. The author sure kept me in the dark. Did the same thing to Jude, in more ways than one. I admired Jude’s fortitude. Her dedication to protecting animals from cruelty, even at the expense of her own health. I wanted to know more about her. This is the third book in the series and I plan on going back to the beginning. Meeting these character’s to see how they all wound up together. And really getting to know Jude and what drives her.

And I sure hope there is another book in the works. The ending has Jude battling a personal dilemma and I want to know how that pans out.

Synopsis

Jude Brannock is a brash and single-minded female protagonist for today’s readers who believe that nature and animals deserve our respect and must be protected. In The Experiment, author Robin Lamont brings these forward-looking themes to her newest suspense novel.

Jude is an investigator for an animal protection organization. When the young man she has trained for an undercover job suddenly vanishes after a tantalizing text that he’s “on to something,” Jude rushes to the quiet, farming community of Half Moon, only to discover that her trainee might have perpetrated an elaborate con job on her. Determined to get to the truth, she unearths a biopharmaceutical company’s deadly secret, and in doing so, comes up against dark secrets of her own.

Check out the glimpse inside:

John Harbolt wasn’t easily shaken. With over forty years of medicine under his belt, there was hardly an injury, disease, or fatality he hadn’t seen, and he’d treated just about everyone in the small town of Half Moon at some time or other. But on that late summer day, young Tori Lacey showed him something that baffled him. Her symptoms were inexplicable and downright scary. She was his first patient of the day, a young woman who had battled her weight for years. In between the earaches and the sore throats, Harbolt had gently counseled her about diet and exercise. He hoped she wasn’t here to ask him about diet pills again, because as far as he was concerned, they were off the table. After removing her file from the plastic holder bolted to the outside of the examination room, he adjusted his wire rim glasses and straightened his lab coat. The younger doctors often wore khakis and a short-sleeved shirt at work, and maybe it put the kids more at ease. But Dr. Harbolt stuck with a freshly starched white coat, believing that it made his patients feel more confident in his abilities. And confidence in one’s doctor was important to the healing process. “Tori Ann Lacey,” he announced jovially as he shambled into the room. “Hi, Dr. Harbolt.” The morose girl before him sat on the table. She had taken off her running shoes but left her sweatshirt and shorts on. “I haven’t seen you for a while,” he said, noting with some surprise that she had slimmed considerably, her round face now leaner and more mature. “How is college life treating you?” “Ok, I guess.” Her voice and posture belied this. “What brings you here today, my dear.” “I don’t really know. But we thought you should look at these.” She pushed back the sleeve of her sweatshirt and held out her arm for inspection. There were several bruises that vandalized the translucent skin of her inner arm. Dr. Harbolt held her wrist and peering over his glasses, looked closely at the red and purple marks. He pressed lightly on one of them. “Does that hurt?” She shook her head no. “What happened?” “That’s the thing. Nothing happened. They just appeared.” She showed him another set of bruises on her other arm. “Did you fall?” “No.” “Knocked into something?” “No,” she exclaimed, as though he didn’t believe her. “My mom thinks it’s my diet. That I should be eating meat.” “And you’re not?” “No. I needed to lose five more pounds for the track team, which I was having a hard time doing, so I switched over to a raw food diet. And it really helped because I made my goal.” “And you were selected for the team?” She nodded, anxiously chewing on a nail. “Congratulations. You getting enough protein?” he asked, studying the bruising and letting her answer drift past him. This wasn’t because of her diet. She rambled for a moment about nuts and spinach, then peeled off her socks and lifted her bare feet to the end of the examination table. “And then yesterday after a run, I found this,” she said. “I didn’t even show my mom ’cause she’d freak out.” Dr. Harbolt caught his breath. It looked as though someone had taken a baseball bat to the soles of the girl’s feet. Fiery maroon blotches screamed out some kind of violence. Three of her toes had turned a dark purple. “Good Lord!” he blurted out. “What happened to you?” “Nothing! I’m telling you nothing happened,” wailed Tori. “They just … showed up.” *** Excerpt from The Experiment by Robin Lamont. Copyright © 2019 by Robin Lamont. The Dream Guardian

by E.J. Miranda

Synopsis

It is said that dreams are just that: only dreams. But believe me, this is not always true. Some dreams are as real as the dreamer.

Thanks to their dreams, dreamers can receive the special visit of eternal wisdom that has inspired the creativity of great inventors, scientists, musicians, and even writers throughout the ages.

This creative wisdom is not always the type that appears to the eager conscience. Sometimes, a Defiler, a destroyer of dreams, is the one who tries to appear before the dreamer. These creatures were once humans, but they allowed their pain and desire for revenge to take over and seek the same miserable fate for the one who dreams.

You must not fear — Dream Guardians, also known as Kelsdrant, will always protect the one who dreams, even with their own life. They are people of flesh and bone, just like you and me, or at least they are on Earth.

The following story is dedicated to the fun, extravagant, and enlightening life of Julian Fox, the Dream Guardian.

Be prepared, dear reader. It is time to dream, laugh, reflect, and even maybe cry.

Welcome to the Land of the Wise Dreams.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Chapter 3: Alminrach Kelsdrant

Solidarity transcends the differences caused by fear.

The excitement became smiles, and the happiness turned into an invitation. Enthusiastic about the upcoming tour, Brenda joked with Julian,

“I will serve as a tour guide.”

They happily walked the few feet that separated them from the Palace. The end of the road revealed the surprise, and the magnificent edifice made one’s heart alternate between feelings of fascination and disbelief. Born of marble and sculpted with the most exquisite inspiration, what towered before them was a work of colossal proportions and delicate details.

The Guardians slowed their pace to admire such grandeur. Brenda took a deep breath and proudly presented it to her pupil:

“Julian, this is Alminrach Kelsdrant, our Palace.”

The surprised Guardian admired it in silence until he could speak:

“It’s exactly the same as the Parthenon, only much bigger.”

“You’re right, Julian, but the construction of our Palace precedes the appearance of man on Earth. As you might guess, it served as the inspiration for such a magnificent building.”

“How is that possible?” Julian asked in amazement, without lifting his eyes from the Palace.

Brenda simply replied:

“All in good time, Julian. What I can tell you is that in Mikangly Greydalash you’ll find many surprises and the origin of many things you’ve seen or read on Earth.”

About Author E.J. Miranda:

E. J. Miranda is an avid reader, an enthusiastic traveler, and a passionate author. Her great sense of humor and love for nature have granted her a rebellious writing style: Her approach describes the adventures of life but in such a way that each reader can have an individual take on the matter. Her inspiration comes from her curiosity about other countries’ cultures and peculiarities. A few countries in particular that spark her curiosity are Colombia, Italy, Costa Rica, England, Belgium, Mexico, Spain, and the United States. Her favorite places to visit are historical sites and museums, locations that allow her to explore important and even overlooked details. She currently lives with her husband in Colombia but frequently travels to Houston to visit her daughter and son. E.J. Miranda has a degree in tax accounting, but she prefers interacting with people to calculating their taxes. To learn more about her life and work, visit http://www.ejmiranda.com.

This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Some chit chat.

Got my son’s new computer all set up and now I have my baby back! LOL It’s been weird sharing a computer but also a bit relaxing. Funny how not being able to go online can do that to a person. I sure have been missing a lot of great posts and I’ll be trying to stop in and see what I’ve missed.

I did manage to catch up on some shows. I, Zombie and Mindhunter are a couple I’ve been watching. And I want to try Veronica Mars. Curious about it since a lot of people have been sharing their thoughts on the show.

And, of course, I’ve been catching up on some reading. I’ve noticed I’m really into the horror again and I have some good ones I’m saving for the month of October.

It’s good to be back y’all!

Have a lovely Sunday everyone.

Abominable

Genre: Horror / Science Fiction

My Review

Here’s how it starts. A strange capsule is discovered in the ice. After some testing it’s found to have been buried there for around thirty thousand years. Impregnable and mystifying, by accident they are able to see inside. Revealed is a huge white apelike creature. Once they crack the capsule, the fun begins.

First, I can’t resist a story set in uninviting environments, especially places like Alaska. Just to survive is a daily struggle. Next, a bit of science fiction. What is the capsule’s purpose? And is the creature inside from this planet, or somewhere else? And last but not least, a rampaging creature that doesn’t belong escapes. That’s B-movie chum for me.

I went into this expecting a bit of fun and I had a lot of it. I watch a lot of movies with this kind of plot and drew on them for some great visuals. Am I morbid that some of those bloody scenes made me laugh? Maybe, but that’s part of the fun.

Several years ago I read Smilodon, another book by Alan Nayes. It had giant sabre-toothed cats. Abominable was every bit as good.

Synopsis

A mysterious unidentifiable object is discovered buried deep in an isolated glacier in Alaska’s rugged Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It is composed of materials unknown to science and the mystery only deepens when the large unidentified object is determined to be twenty-eight thousand years old. Who left it there so many thousands of years ago? Why?
Dr. Shelby Hollister, a specialist in primatology, is consulted when bones dug from the ice alongside the object are found to belong to an unknown species of prehistoric primate.
The story explodes in magnitude when the object begins a physical transformation revealing what is inside—a perfectly preserved giant ape!

ABOMINABLE. What happens when a giant Ice Age ‘Abominable Snowman’ escapes into the twenty-first century?

The Darkest Lullaby

by Jonathan Janz

A Contemporary Horror

My Review

I’m always thrilled to read another book by Jonathan Janz and he got me once again with The Darkest Lullaby.

Talk about scary. If it’s not one thing driving this family to the brink, it’s another. The story gets creepier, things come out of the dark to haunt and terrorize, and there’s no letting down your guard. I almost did with one character. Learned my lesson. LOL

If you like crazy, very unpredictable and downright creepy stories and an author who doesn’t flinch at killing off their characters, this is just the book for you.

Synopsis

The old house waited. For years there had been rumors that the owner, Lilith Martin, had been part of an unholy cult. People spoke of blasphemous rituals, black rites filled with blood, sex…and sacrifices. Then Lilith died and the house sat empty. Until now.

Ellie isn t happy about living in such a dark, foreboding place, but she wants to get pregnant and this house has a lot more room to raise a baby than their apartment. About Author Jonathan Janz

Jonathan Janz

Jonathan Janz grew up between a dark forest and a
graveyard, which explains everything. Brian Keene named his
debut novel The Sorrows “the best horror novel of 2012.”
The Library Journal deemed his follow-up, House of Skin,
“reminiscent of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House
and Peter Straub’s Ghost Story.”
Since then Jonathan’s work has been lauded by writers like Jack Ketchum,
Edward Lee, Tim Waggoner, Bryan Smith, and Ronald Kelly. Novels like The
Nightmare Girl, Wolf Land, Savage Species, and Dust Devils prompted
Thunderstorm Books to sign Jonathan to an eleven-book deal and to give
him his own imprint, Jonathan Janz’s Shadow Side.
His novel Children of the Dark received a starred review in Booklist and was
chosen by their board as one of the Top Ten Horror Books of the Year
(August 2015-September 2016). Children of the Dark will soon be translated
into German and has been championed by the Library Journal, the School
Library Journal, and Cemetery Dance. In early 2017, his novel Exorcist Falls
was released to critical acclaim.
Jonathan’s primary interests are his wonderful wife and his three amazing
children, and though he realizes that every author’s wife and children are
wonderful and amazing, in this case the cliché happens to be true. You can
learn more about Janz at www.jonathanjanz.com.
