What if the future is predetermined
and nothing you do can change it?

All he wanted was to go back to the
future, but that also meant living in a world without her.

Leonardo

My world turned upside down when I
broke a bottle containing a wish. I’m an easy-going person, and I hate anything
brainy, but the damn bottle made me travel back in time, back to 1956
when Abuela was only nineteen. Younger than me!

I might need to use my brain to
figure out how to get back to 2020, preferably before I alter my grandparents’
history. Befriending them isn’t part of the plan, and falling for Celestina,
my abuela‘s future best friend, is definitely not supposed to
happen.

Celestina

All Celestina wanted was her mother’s
love, but because she’s a product of rape, she learned to accept that her dream
would never come true. However, when Leonardo materialized out of her bottle in
front of her, she thought that if magic was possible, her wishes may not be out
of reach.

In Another Time is a time travel
romance set in Beniardà, a small sun-drenched village in Francoist Spain, where
time seemed to be standing still.

If you’re a fan of old crushes
realized, age gap trope, and romance that transcends time, then this book is
for you. Click the PRE-ORDER button now to join Leonardo and
Celestina on a journey across the decades for love.

Her knuckles whitened as she clenched her fist. “I’m going to
the campo soon, but can I meet you in
the embalse in the afternoon?” She
looked around, her gaze furtive, before focusing back on me. “I really need to
speak to you. Alone.”

I inched closer while she kept retreating, until her back was
against the wall bordering the road down to Font Vella. “Alone? With me? Here?”

If someone asked what I was doing in that moment, I, who
never ran out of words, wouldn’t be able to answer. I had no idea what I was
doing. I shouldn’t get too deeply involved with people from the village. It was
bad enough that I’d let Abuela know
the truth, which could change God knows what in the future. I couldn’t take
another risk by hitting on Celestina, Abuela’s
future best friend.

But it was too hard to hold back.

I grew up seeing and hearing about Celestina. She was like a
mysterious myth to me. I met my first girlfriend when I was seventeen. However,
no matter how many relationships I ended up in later, Celestina had always been
at the back of my mind. This mystery was now in front of me, within my reach.
Without thinking, I grasped a handful of curls, right at her cheek. She let out
an audible gasp as I let the strands slip through my fingers, the action soft
and addictive.

“Leonardo, are you here?”

I snapped straight, the spell broken by Abuela’s gentle voice.

Celestina lay both hands on my chest and pushed me. “I’ll see
you in the embalse!” she said and ran
off, leaving me wondering what time we were to meet at.

“Was that Celestina?” Abuela
asked.

I shoved my hands into my jacket pockets. “Yep.”

“When did the two of you become close?”

“We’re not.”

“Uh, huh.” She gave me an I-don’t-believe-you look, and I
knew I needed to confess.

“It’s nothing. I’m here looking for a clue how to get back to
the future, and she asked to meet me in the embalse.”

She glanced in the direction Celestina took. “Why?”

“I don’t know. She said she wanted to speak to me. Alone.”

Abuela laughed a little.

¿Qué?” I asked,
feeling defensive all of a sudden.

Genre: Fantasy Romance

Synopsis

Sorcha is a descendant of the Atlantean people, a race of humans who were once the blood slaves of the vampires of Atlantis. She grew up knowing that the vampires were enemies, the werewolves were beasts, and the witches were their friends. When she starts to question the situation her clan has been put into with the witches, a vampire who haunts her erotic dreams comes to the rescue. Samson didn’t grow up in Atlantis and didn’t choose to become a vampire. He hates what he has to do to survive, and can’t imagine ever deserving love. When he finds a Descendant of Atlantis near death and nurses her back to health, he expects her to run at the first opportunity. When she offers him her willing body, he knows he would do anything to keep her, and that means hiding his monstrous side. But you can’t love someone if you’re hiding part of yourself. One look at Samson and Sorcha knows she erased him from her memory on purpose, but why? What could he have done to make her risk such a dangerous spell? With battle on the horizon and Descendants in trouble, will Sorcha’s memories be the end of any chance at Samson’s happiness, or will it lead to a new understanding of what these monsters really are?

“Don’t worry, I’m the biggest predator in this ocean,” he grinned and flashed his fangs.

It should have scared her she supposed, but all it did was make her tingle with anticipation. What was wrong with her?

He pushed the boat back toward land, then pulled her in for a kiss, seeming to have no trouble staying afloat. She felt a rise of panic as the boat drifted away.

“Katherine, I will always keep you safe,” he promised and took her hand. “Now, follow me, we will swim fast and hard, straight down. The vortex will start to pull and when it does, things will go fast.”

“You won’t let go of me?”

“Of course not,” he promised. “Now, take a deep breath.”

She did, and then they were underwater and against every instinct, she was letting him drag her down toward the bottom. Soon her lungs began to burn, and panic swelled and just when she thought the panic might be too much, she felt a pull all over her body, a push behind her and a sucking in front. She was thrown through the water so fast she couldn’t have stopped it if she’d wanted to. She stopped swimming and clung to Ian’s arm with both hands. Her mind started to fuzz, she was desperate for air, and she was sure he was wrong.

The legendary Native American Spirit Woman and her mountain lion companion, said to appear in times of trouble, are once again sighted near Lockleer Mountain. And there is trouble aplenty.

Twenty-four hours after Joe and his brother, Cyrus, quarrel over the ownership of a winning million dollar lottery ticket, Cyrus’s mutilated body is found in the mountains, ravaged by the local wildlife. Sheriff Peabody and Deputy Nate Darling are soon puzzled by stolen VA hospital drugs found in Cyrus’s bedroom. It seems likely the suspected homicide is either connected to the contested lottery ticket or the drugs.

Hearing of the crowds that inevitably follow such a disturbing event, Rosita Ramirez, a transient with two children, comes to Lockleer Mountain to sell homemade tamales. She is befriended by Nate’s fiancé, Lou Shoemaker, owner of the Pooper Scooper sewer disposal truck. Rosita parks her old motorhome at the First Baptist Church and Lou aids her in acquiring employment at the local diner.

Soon, malicious gossip erupts about Rosita and the pastor. The church deacons are divided between ignoring unproven gossip, versus concern the gossip will divide the congregation and affect the future of the church.

In addition to finding a killer, Sheriff Peabody and his deputies are now tasked with exposing the perpetrator of the gossip, or the pastor will be forced to leave. How can the Spirit Woman and her companions bring about a solution to the troubles that plague the rural community?

Lou checked her watch. “It’s after 12:00 P.M. We should get going.” She caught a glimpse of a woman approaching their table. Assuming it was the waitress with the bill, she reached for her purse. “My treat this time, Judy. You got─”

“Well! If it isn’t Miss Sewer Truck in person and her chubby sidekick. What are you two doing here? Don’t tell me you know someone in the hospital.”

Lou’s stomach clenched as she stared up into Sylvia Mulvaney’s scowling face. Since Nate and Lou announced their engagement, Nate’s old high school girlfriend, Sylvia, delighted in verbally harassing Lou. Sylvia acted like she was Nate’s ex-sweetheart, even thirteen years after she broke his heart and married the high school football star. For the sake of keeping the peace, Lou tried to avoid her. With an effort, she controlled her voice. “Just having lunch, Sylvia. How are you?”

Sylvia leaned over the table and shoved her face close to Lou. “I’m fine, Miss Shoemaker. Trying to feed my kids without any help from my ex-husband, who’s currently rotting in jail. You still drive that sewer crap truck?”

Lou pushed back her chair and stood. “Look, Sylvia, I provide a necessary service to the community.” She tossed bills onto the table. “We don’t want any trouble.”

Sylvia grabbed the strap on Judy’s purse. “Don’t go with her. Stay, and have a cup of coffee with me. Why risk having her stink rub off on you?”

Judy tried to loosen Sylvia’s grip on the strap. “Let go.” Sylvia released the purse and grabbed Judy’s arm, pinching it as she struggled. “Ow! Sylvia, stop! You’re hurting me. Lou!”

Lou grabbed Sylvia’s arm and wrenched her away from Judy. “Let go of her this minute.” As Sylvia’s grip loosened from Judy’s arm, she stumbled, and either accidently or more likely on purpose, fell backward and landed on the floor. She let out a yelp.

The waitress and a busboy came running to intercede in what appeared to be Lou assaulting a customer. “What’s going on here?” The server leaned down and took Sylvia’s arm to help her up. “Are you okay?”

“I was just walking by and she grabbed me,” Sylvia said, feigning pain and rubbing her arm. “She pushed me down.” The lie rolled off her tongue like honey off a hot biscuit.

Lou shook her head and gazed from Sylvia, to the waitress, and then to Judy. “You saw what happened. We were minding our own business and she─”

The waitress shook her finger in Lou’s face. “I don’t much care who did what to whom. Both of you, clear out. You’re not welcome here.”

Lou took Judy’s arm and whispered. “Let’s get out of here before this gets any worse.”

The Babel Apocalypse

by Vyvyan Evans

Genre: Science Fiction

Synopsis

Language is no longer learned, but streamed to neural implants regulated by lang-laws. Those who can’t afford monthly language streaming services are feral, living on the fringes of society. Big tech corporations control language, the world’s most valuable commodity.

But when a massive cyberattack causes a global language outage, catastrophe looms.

Europol detective Emyr Morgan is assigned to the case. Suspect number one is Professor Ebba Black, the last native speaker of language in the automated world, and leader of the Babel cyberterrorist organization. But Emyr soon learns that in a world of corporate power, where those who control language control everything, all is not as it seems. After all, if the mysterious Ebba Black is to blame, why is the Russian Federation being framed for an outage it claims no responsibility for? And why is Ebba now a target for assassination?

As he and Ebba collide, Emyr faces an existential dilemma between loyalty and betrayal, when everything he once believed in is called into question. To prevent the imminent collapse of civilization and a deadly war between the great federations, he must figure out friend from foe—his life depends on it.

And with the odds stacked against him, he must find a way to stop the Babel Apocalypse.

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
As I was about to glance back at the voices, a light flickered in my peripheral vision, drawing my gaze upward to the night sky. A soft white glow, high up in the dark. At first it was indistinguishable from the airway lights. But it persisted, the size of a small disk at first, before shifting to red-orange, getting larger. At that point I realized it definitely couldn’t be a hover car. This was farther up, probably low Earth orbit, which explained the initial white. But the shift in coloration—that meant a detonation, producing nitrogen dioxide, which turned deep orange when mixed with air. A gaseous cloud has reached the atmosphere, I thought. I was witnessing a chemical explosion in space large enough to be visible to the naked eye. But what was exploding?
As I continued looking up, the orange grew in intensity until it flared across the skyline, illuminating the entire landscape around me with an eerie red-orange. It was only then that I became aware of the newly hushed silence of the drunken revelers nearby. And the silhouettes of other people too, who had also stopped and peppered the pedestrian corridor. We were all now strange red creatures, watching transfixed in rapt silence as the night sky was on fire. And just as suddenly as it had appeared, it was gone; the orange light faded back into a deep well of pitch black.
Guest Post From Author Vyvyan Evans:
Why you chose language as the focus for your story
My background is in linguistics, working as a university professor. Hence, I had written and published a good number of non-fiction books before moving into science fiction. I published 14 non-fiction books, including technical books, textbooks for university students and popular science books on language and communication for lay readers.
The Babel Apocalypse is a natural extension of my entire career as a researcher in linguistics. It imagines a near-future in which language is no longer learned, it’s streamed to neural implants in people’s heads from internet in space. But when a global language strikes, catastrophe ensues. The book explores how language works, and when it doesn’t what we all lose. I hope it makes the reader think about language in a whole new way.
The Babel Apocalypse imagines a future in which we stream language directly to neural implants in our heads, just as, today, we stream anything from movies, to books, to music, to our ‘smart’ devices, and consume that content. Smart devices use streaming signals—data encoded in IP data packets—encoded and distributed via wi-fi internet. Language streaming would work, in principle, in the same way. With a ‘language chip’ implanted in our brains, we will be able to ‘stream’ language from internet-in-space on demand, 24/7.
Moreover, based on an individual’s level of subscription to a language streaming provider, they would be able to stream any language they chose, with any level of lexical complexity. This means that someone could, potentially, apply for a job in any country in the world, without needing to be concerned about knowing the local language. Rather, the individual would just draw upon the words and grammar they need, to function in the language, by syncing to a language database, stored on a server in space. And call it up, over the internet, in real time, as they think and talk. It means that everything someone needs to know, to be able to use a language, is streamed over the internet, rather than being stored in someone’s head. Language learning, thus, becomes obsolete.
Science fiction has a long and illustrious habit of predicting the future. In 1940, with his first in the Robot series of stories, Isaac Asimov predicted some of the ethical issues that would arise as artificial intelligence comes to have a more pervasive influence in our daily lives.
Today in the twentieth first century, we are on the brink of a Fourth Industrial Revolution, sometimes dubbed 4IR. This is where automation and connectivity, via the internet, will dramatically alter the way in which we interact with each other, as well as everything around us, in our increasingly joined-up technological environment. And I predict, in less than one hundred years from now, this new technology will transform many aspects of our daily lives that we currently take for granted, including language itself.
As humans “give up” on language, and offload language learning, allowing AI to take over, language becomes a commodity (like any other, such as movies, music, etc., that we now stream on demand for a fee). In short, language would become a proprietary product, controlled for and by big tech, in service of shareholders and corporate interests.
Such a development leads to a slippery slope of issues ranging from potential censorship, to control of thought, and even, through cyberterrorism, the prospect of an existential crisis for the human race. The latter is manifested in The Babel Apocalypse most notably by a global language outage, which prevents large numbers of people from being able to communicate.
Self-evidently, in a world where most people have undergone language chipping, this would soon lead to a situation in which in the automated world there are no native speakers of language left. And with an entire population entirely dependent on language, were that language streaming ecosystem to fail, then the consequences would be catastrophic.
The Babel Apocalypse imagines a situation in which a cyberterrorist attack on language streaming servers in low-Earth orbit leads to just such a global language outage. Such an event, with its low probability, would be one for which humans would be completely unprepared. In The Babel Apocalypse, entire populations of people, literally at a stroke, lose the ability to use language, becoming feral. And hence, the consequences for civilization become catastrophic.
Hence, the concerns alluded to in the book relate, ultimately, to what it means to be human; and whether implantable AI can and should be allowed to replace previously fundamental aspects of the human experience. Moreover, these concerns highlight the abuse that arises from the commoditization of what we (may have previously) assumed to be a human birth-right, namely language.
IS IT CONSIDERED STALKING YOUR BOYFRIEND IF HE’S INVOLVED IN YOUR MURDER INVESTIGATION? (ASKING FOR A FRIEND)
Turner & Hooch meets Mr. & Mrs. Smith in the eighth book of the Wall Street Journal bestselling Maizie Albright Star Detective series. For fans of rom-com mysteries, like Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum or Jennifer Crusie’s Liz Danger series—readers who like quirky characters, funny fast-paced plots, and amateur sleuthing heroines who earnestly agonize over (but not between) murder and marriage.
#WannabeMrsSmith Ex-celebrity and current (assistant) private investigator Maizie Albright finds her already strange life has become even odder. Her new partner is two hundred pounds and canine. And her ex-partner/still-boyfriend is on the wrong side of her infidelity case.
Not that Wyatt Nash is cheating.
At least not on Maizie. She thinks Nash is cheating on his boss. Her dad. Which sounds much worse than it is. Except it is (maybe) worse than it sounds…
It’s Spy vs. Spy — or rather, Detective vs. Detective — when Maizie and Nash realize they’re both tailing the same subject for very different reasons. Can Maizie out-investigate Nash to learn the secrets he’s probing into at her father’s company?
Secrets she fears are much darker (and stinkier) than the secret DeerNose formula.
Secrets possibly related to old rivalries and a recent murder.
Her relationship is on the line, but it’s more than her heart at stake. Her career rests on this case. And there’s a killer at large. One who will do anything to keep dark secrets from getting dragged into the light.
About Larissa Reinhart
A Wall Street Journal bestselling author, Larissa loves to tell funny stories about sassy Southern women looking for love (and sometimes dead bodies) in all the wrong places, like in her international award-winning Cherry Tucker Mystery, Maizie Albright Star Detective, and Finley Goodhart Crime Caper series. You might have seen Larissa and her family with their little dog, Biscuit, on HGTV’s House Hunters International “Living for the Weekend in Nagoya” episode. gleamed like bone in the twilight, Viv saw that the garment was old-fashioned, with flounces at
the hem and on the chest. The hem trailed in the wet grass at Morgan’s feet. Long sleeves
covered her arms, and Morgan’s long hair draped down her gown and around her body like
ropes, the ends of her hair coated in a sticky fluid. Viv’s eyes trailed over the gown. Red stains,
etched in symbols that resembled keys, were traced across the fabric. Morgan’s hands were
coated in red, and Viv realized, in a distant corner of her mind, that the red was blood.
.
More blood dripped from her scalp, a gory crown that haloed her white face and wide eyes. Her
lips were stained red, and more fluid dribbled from her mouth as Morgan’s face stretched into
the familiar too wide, grotesque grin. Feathers, blue and black and red, rested on the ground at
Morgan’s feet, also stained with blood.
.
Morgan turned from the sky and focused on Viv. The grin grew wider.
.
“Hello.” The high, thin, childish voice was back.
.
“Have you come to join us?”
Enjoy this peek inside:
From Chapter: This House is Not a Home (Currently)
It’s a bright Saturday morning and I’m looking around my kitchen wondering when, exactly, I let it get THIS bad. The dishwasher has been run, but nobody has bothered to unload it, resulting in piles of dirty dishes in and around the sink. There are empty cereal boxes lined up, I assume, so I can cut out the Box Tops for Education labels…because I’m the only one who can what…use scissors? Break down the boxes for recycling? Throw away the empty bag inside the boxes that once held cereal?
Speaking of recycling, there’s a bag of recycling on a stool waiting to be taken out on our “next trip” out of the house. It’s been there for three days and we have, in fact, left the house several times in those three days.
The clincher, though, is the kitchen table. Our puppy has a best friend that lives next door. He comes over to our back deck door and barks for Sullivan to come out to play. They wrestle, run around, investigate, bark at each other, bark at passersby, lay down to rest, and then start over. When they’re out and I’m working or writing, I bring my laptop up to the kitchen table so I can check on the dogs from time to time.
At this very moment, I’m sitting at my kitchen table and surrounding my laptop are:
•One little girl’s black shoe.
•One little girl’s gold shoe.
•One little girl’s pink slipper.
•The Nancy Drew book we’re currently reading.
•Large bag of colored pencils.
•Pair of my husband’s dirty socks.
•Empty napkin holder on its side.
•The art project brought home by my littlest little girl.
•Pad of paper with my work notes scribbled on it.
•Three place mats (one was a casualty of yesterday’s juice fiasco).
•One black marker.
•Work documents of my husband’s.
•A partially completed drawing.
My kitchen table isn’t even big! How, or perhaps a better question is WHY, is there so much sh*t sitting on it?!! And does anybody else find it a teensy bit disconcerting that there are two shoes, a slipper, and dirty socks on the table at which we EAT OUR MEALS? Anyone???
Cassivale took my breath away from afar. The splendor changed when we started up the drive, leading to a dilapidated fountain forming a roundabout. A statue of a cavalryman took up the center of the fixture, a heroic figure holding up a saber over his head with the steed rearing in a classical pose.
I assumed the water normally came from the beast’s mouth though it clearly hadn’t produced anything but mold and moss for several years. The murky water took on a green hue, the stonework cracked and brutalized by Pacific Northwest storms. Despite the fact it stood more than twenty feet tall, it seemed diminished. Diminutive even.
The fact I could not remember it at all bothered me. I wanted to have some vision of it in full glory. Sun beaming down from behind the head of the horseman, water cascading out into the crystal clear pool. As we drove around it, I doubted it had been cleaned since long before I was born.
Maybe my parents kept me away from the thing.
The front of the estate loomed over us nearly four stories. A flight of wide stairs led up to a porch stretching around the house with Greek style pillars holding it up. Those looked sturdy enough, though time definitely had a go at them. Cracks in the wood were apparent long before I got out of the car.
Rodney stopped directly beside the steps. I hopped out, taking the full brunt of a stiff breeze from the left. I drew my coat tight about me, taking a moment to look over the arched windows dotting the surface of Cassivale, some lit while others remained dark. Like the upper stories, none of them appeared to be broken, which surprised me.
Considering the state of the fountain at least.
The house boasted twenty-five bedrooms. It sprawled to the left and right, at least a block in each direction. How had I been allowed to roam freely through those halls as a child? Getting lost in the labyrinthine corridors, the secret passages and dusty spaces no longer occupied.
It seemed like a fantastic dream.
