In the Shadow of a Dream

by Maci Aurora

(Fareview Fairytales, #3)
Publication date: January 30th 2024
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

With the promise of finally learning her mother’s secrets, Brinna Fareview and her family gather together. Only somewhere between the truth and lies, Brinna wakes to find she’s trapped in a space in between the world awake and the nightmares of her family. All of them are asleep. Learning she has the ability to move from dream to dream, Brinna tries to find a way out of the dream world, but she’s stuck, unable to fix what’s ailing her family. But then an unexpected thing happens, Lucian Uraiahs, god of day and light, walks into her dream.

While Lucian decided a long time ago that Brinna Fareview was a blight on his peace, he can’t seem to avoid her. She pops up at every turn, all because his brother is god-yoked to her sister. All Lucian wants is to disappear into the oblivion of the cosmos amidst his shame and guilt, but the unbidden feelings he has for Brinna can’t be contained. When Lucian is stripped of his powers for refusing to bend to his father’s will, he is imprisoned with only his guilt to keep him company. Except when he falls asleep, he dreams of Brinna and somehow becomes the only link to saving her, her family, and his brother from a spell that could destroy them all.

Brinna and Lucian must work together to uncover the secrets they need to break the sleeping spell, but the longer they share their dreams, the more they realize time is against them.

Join the Fareviews in book three of the Fareview Fairytales series, In the Shadow of a Dream, to discover the truth that has them trapped behind the hedge.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Luc grumbled and turned back to look at the hedge once more, walking its length when he heard women’s voices—sweet and lilting—coming from inside. He stepped back, searching for the elusive entrance.

“Remember when we were talking to Tarley the other day? About the man in the woods?” Aurielle—he knew her voice—replied.

“So romantic…” the other said, her voice soft and whimsical. Which left only two possibilities: Luc’s woodland fairy or the other sister, the one with the dark, soulful eyes. “Why are we doing this again?” she asked.

He wondered which one was with Aurielle and suppressed any hope it might be his singer.

“Well, I’ve met someone.” Aurielle snapped the words, because the other one seemed to be antagonistic about being dragged out into the woods.

He grinned at their bickering. Relatable.

“I have so many questions! You’ve been behind the hedge since–” The sister’s voice cut off abruptly, then she shouted, “The Great Nap Escapade?”

“So,” Aurielle said, drawing out the word, “you’re doing this for true love. And I promise, Brin, you won’t have to wait long.”

[…]There were words spoken Luc couldn’t discern, followed by Aurielle bursting from the hedge. She called out for Nix and disappeared across the road through the bramble.

“What if someone comes?” Brinna called, then groaned. “Annoying.”

He was going to talk to her! He swallowed as he thought about what to say. “Couldn’t agree more.” Luc couldn’t see her; she was still hidden within the hedge.

She gasped. “Who’s there?”

“The brother.”

Her head—like a disembodied apparition—appeared from the hedge, turning to look for him.

When she saw him, her eyes widened. It was the first time he realized her eyes were gray. “Whose brother?”

He hummed but said, “Since we’re both on lookout duty, we could make it interesting.” “Who are you, exactly?” she asked, stepping from the hedge.

Luc’s breath stopped up, caught up by both disbelief and utter excitement. […] “There you are,” Luc said, finally finding his voice.

She demanded his name.

“Lucian,” he said, turning slightly toward her, his shoulder leaning against the hedge—a terrible choice. He straightened and wiped the leaves from his shoulder.

“And you’re not here to meet my sister?”

“Stars, no,” he said, allowing himself to truly look at her as he shook his head, grateful, suddenly, that Nix asked him to be his unnecessary companion. “That would be my brother. Come closer.” He gave her a slight grin. “I don’t bite. Usually.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I’m fine right here, thank you.”

“You know my name, which gives you power. Will you not offer the same?” Though he already knew it, he wanted her to offer it freely.

“Brinna,” she replied and disappeared back into the hedge.

“Wait,” Luc called. “Where did you go?” The hedge didn’t have an entrance. “Where are you?” “Here,” she whispered, as if daring him to find her. Despite the low volume, her voice reached him, and he wondered, strangely, if it always would.

He used his godlight to sneak through the magical threads of the hedge, and his arms passed through, allowing him to grasp Brinna. Using her as leverage, he pulled himself inside.

She squealed—a cute little sound that seemed as if she was trying to be quiet about it—and stumbled into him, her palms pressed against his chest. Heat seared his skin underneath his clothes where her hands rested.

“What are you doing?” she demanded. “Unhand me.”

He did. Immediately. Swiping his hands over the place she’d touched to wipe away the sensation.

He hated the added impulse of wanting to wrap her up in his arms.

Ridiculous. He told himself he was curious about this hedge, given he’d never seen anything like it on his Roam.

He walked deeper into an arched passageway that stretched out in front of him with no end in sight, as if it curled in on itself. Surprised by the muted light inside, Luc glanced over his shoulder, where Brinna now stood framed by an arched entrance.

She followed him. “What is wrong with you?”

His internal glow warmed the darkness inside the hedge so he could see her features, which pinched with her frown. He wanted to press his thumb against her mouth, run the pad of it across her lips, but he swallowed the urge instead and looked away.

“If I keep walking, what will I find?” he asked, ignoring her question for one of his own.

“The cottage. Where I live.” She paused, then said, “You truly couldn’t see me? That seems… unbelievable.”

He hummed and looked around. “Perhaps if it wasn’t enchanted.”

“Enchanted!” She scoffed, an unflattering kind of snort, but Luc found it… cute. “You must be mistaken.”

He snorted back at her, incredulous. “I am not mistaken. Not about this.”

“You don’t make mistakes?” She offered a sharp laugh.

He’d begun to think this—trapping himself in proximity to her—was one. “Absolutely not,” he lied. The very large mistake in his immediate past had nearly cost him his brother, but she didn’t need to know about that.

“I highly doubt that.” She crossed her arms, her dark eyebrows arching over her pretty eyes. “Now, why are you glowing?”

“Why is this hedge enchanted?” he countered, realizing he should have doused his godlight so his father wouldn’t know, but he didn’t with her attention finally fixed on him.

They stood facing one another, the hedge seeming to close in around them. He only needed to take a step, and he’d be close enough to draw her into his arms, lean forward, and kiss her. The shrinking hedge and his overpowering urge to touch her made him feel like he couldn’t take a deep enough breath.

“How do you get out of here?” The shrinking hedge unnerved him, even if it was an illusion…Then he realized he couldn’t see the opening any longer. It had disappeared. He was trapped.

“I need to go,” he gasped.

Or could it be the venture capitalists, whose latest company harvests human organs for transplant, exploiting the vulnerable to save the wealthy elite?

The Violence Shows No Signs Of Ending

Two more people are killed on a cliff overlooking the beach – and all their organs are missing. This bloody terror isn’t slowing down. It’s accelerating. What the hell is going on? Jessy Ascher and her friends set up camp near Moonlight Rocks in the California desert to watch the Leonid meteor shower. After darkness falls, a stunningly bright meteor suddenly flashes across the sky blinding the friends to the approaching danger.

The meteorite blasts into their camp site knocking everyone unconscious but Jessy quickly regains her senses. Her friends however, cannot be roused. Instinctively she grabs the still smoking meteorite and stumbles downhill toward the jeep she arrived in, desperate to get help for her friends…

But, Jessy isn’t alone in that rough, cactus-filled landscape… two dark figures who also saw the meteor flashing down to Earth are frantically searching the same area and they are ready to do anything… even murder to get their hands on a meteorite they could sell to the highest bidder.

And what about the meteorite? Others have been waiting for its arrival. Cultists, fanatical members of nearby religious or supernatural factions – some good, some evil – believe that the meteor heralds the birth of a new Messiah and they, too, are ready to do anything to gain control of the blessed rock.

Jessy wants help for her friends, others want the meteorite for their own end, but the Meteorite, it wants something too… Is this the dawn of a new spiritual age, or just a bunch of psychos raging in the desert?

Yurie Kiri speaks Japanese, English, French and has studied Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish and a smattering of other languages such as Korean and Russian along with binary and hexadecimal machine language. Why? Because if you really want to get to know someone, you need to speak their language no matter if they’re machine or human.

Yurie lived and worked in Asia for decades before recently coming to America. Yurie went on an extensive backroad journey all across the US and Canada. Yurie also sailed (single-handed) from Mexico to the Canadian border, retracing a well-traveled road journey by sea in a small, live-aboard sailboat.

Yurie has been traveling and gathering story ideas from Asia for the Game Series, which covers Japan and other Asian countries, and North America for the Murder and Mystery Series which covers the American Southwest.

And, yes, Yurie does not use pronouns (for a reason). For one thing, it keeps the reader guessing – is Yurie male, female, non-binary, or even a machine? No one really knows for sure…

It hits me hard. Then it pulls through me like a freight train that is stuck on its rails, but set to full throttle at its fastest speed. The pause button has been pushed. Time is slowed to an almost stop. All the energy in the world enters me through the invisible lines that are attached to every square inch of my body. For a second, I have entirely disappeared. Absorbed into everything else that is….and isn’t. This feeling can only be described as indescribable. Without experiencing it yourself, there is no possible way that one could ever even imagine its magnitude and significance. Soon time will begin again and catch up in a strange and ambiguous way. I can see around things that normally seem so benign and unimportant. A new way of thinking takes over as I try to grasp all the differences between what I’ve been told, and what I am currently actually seeing. Things that normally aren’t this clear are suddenly lit up and almost transparent. Like the answers were always just sitting there right in front of me waiting to be found. This is how I want to feel all the time. I can’t imagine dying without ever having felt this way – I now finally feel as though there was a point to living. A glimpse into the soul this deep should not be passed over. Never again will I see things the way that I used to – through a murky filtered lens. Never again will I feel hopelessly trapped inside of someone else’s great idea that I simply do not agree with or accept. Never again will I fear that there is nothing else to be found. Never again will I search for a way to fill the voids that so profoundly populate my chest. I know that in the physical sense I am sitting on the floor against Dave’s beat up brown couch, but I can’t feel it. A numbness has engulfed my body which pulsates at irregular time intervals as a reminder of its presence. A cyclone of thoughts swirl through my head like watercolors being brushed lazily onto a canvas. There is no pain in this place. No worries. No cares. Just the forever stillness of my physical self that has relaxed to the consistency of putty. This is the high. This is what we all crave and spend all of our energy constantly seeking. It has become irreplaceable. It has become everything.

.

.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

As far back as I can recall I would write little snippets of thoughts or even short story type excerpts instead of paying attention in school, to pass the monotony of it all.  Writing was always a passion that would eat away at me in the back of my mind until I had no choice but to put my thoughts down on paper.  Even if these thoughts didn’t formulate into anything more, the act of writing them out and working through the words left me with a cathartic feeling.

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I drink more coffee than water throughout the day and am running out of free skin to tattoo.

I was also recently informed by a close friend that I have a knack for coming up with analogies to describe things, and that I “do this all the time” –  after giving it some thought, I don’t think he’s wrong.

Tell us something really interesting that’s happened to you!

Once on a business trip to San Diego I was shocked to run into an old co-worker there who had moved to the area without my knowledge.  I live in MA, so to randomly run into someone you actually know literally on the other side of the country seemed extremely odd, and of course, interesting!

What are some of your pet peeves?

I don’t have many that I can think of, however the biggest thing that comes to mind is “giving up”.  I personally exhaust every route possible before doing so, and I have come to expect the same from others.  The younger people in my life who I’ve had the pleasure of mentoring over the years always get this advice from me – do you best to never give up, you might end up surprising yourself.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born in Great Barrington MA and grew up in a nearby town called Hinsdale.  It was a rural area with not much to do but to make your own fun, mostly outside either alone or with neighborhood friends.

If you knew you’d die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

I would spend the day at the ocean surrounded by loved ones (hopefully), specifically my daughter.  Knowing that I was going to die would create immense anxiety, and being at the edge of the water could help with calming my nerves.  My daughter would be the last person that I’d want to see before making the final descent into nothingness.

Who is your hero and why?

I can’t really think of anyone (fictional or real) that I would call my “hero”, but if I had to choose, I suppose it would be two people.  My Grandfather is one, and the other would by my Father.  My Grandfather was an extremely kind person and was someone that I observed for years.  I was able to learn a lot from him while I was growing up, and he inadvertently showed me how to deal with most situations in life.  My Father is also one of the nicest people you’d ever have the pleasure of meeting.  He’s an extremely hard worker and has always chosen to do the right thing in life.  Both provided me with many social skills and abilities to navigate life in a respectful manner.

What kind of world ruler would you be?

A peaceful one (if that is at all possible).  I have always felt as though we should all help each other as human beings and do what we can to lift those up around us.  The world we live in today does not have that mentality, and the people who hold power are generally only concerned with acquiring more of it.  As a world leader I would desperately try to push humanity toward hitting a reset button, and changing archaic ways that end up doing more harm than good.

What are you passionate about these days?

I am mostly passionate about my current writing projects, one of which is a comic book series called “Tribes of Erutan” who my closest friend and I have created together.  We are close to publishing the second issue and will then immediately be moving on to the third.  It’s been a tremendously rewarding project and we hope to create many more in the future.  When I’m not working on that specifically, I’ve been writing another novel as well, so that is also at the top of my list lately.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I rarely have “relaxing” time, however when I do, I usually end up either playing some video games, enjoying a sessions of D&D with some friends, or spending time near the ocean.  Every year I travel down to coast of Virginia and just get away from everything around me.  Staring into the vastness of the ocean fills me with inspiration while simultaneously having an overall calming effect.

How to find time to write as a parent?

Finding time to do anything as a parent is difficult!  When my daughter was still very young the opportunity to write was almost non-existent.  There were times where I would have a sudden thought and I would quickly type it out on my phone to not lose the idea etc.  Now that she has grown into a teenager, finding time has become a bit easier.  I end up writing a lot at night, or simply in between obligations such as work and family activities.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Once I published my first novel I began to feel somewhat ok with the title, however I’m not a fan of titles in general.  I feel that stamping a title or name on someone/something immediately provides preconceived notions and tends to make people overlook the qualities behind the veil.  Anyone can be a “writer”, whether you can invoke feeling in a reader is another thing entirely.  My goal is always to make someone feel something.

Do you have a favorite movie?

Too many to list, however a few that come to mind are “Fight Club”, “Trainspotting”, “Donnie Darko”, “The Godfather”,

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?

Definitely Standing Room Only.  There is plenty of drama, with some elements of action as well.   While some scenes would certainly have some grittiness, I feel like the emotion would come across well on screen.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

An English Bulldog – hands down.  I’m only slightly biased due to having my own 12 year old English Bulldog, but seriously I think they’re amazing dogs despite their physical challenges.  They are incredibly stubborn yet extremely loyal and dedicated.  I cannot help but smile every time I see one.

Book Details:

Undomesticated Women, Anecdotal Evidence from the Road by Anna Blake
Category:  Adult Non-Fiction (18+),  325 pages
Genre: Travel Memoir
Publisher:  Prairie Moon Press
Release date:  Oct  2023
Content Rating:  PG. oblique mention of dysfunctional family, no sex, drugs, etc

Book Description:

Welcome to our year of living compactly. My dog, Mister, and I took to the road pulling our A-frame trailer, the Rollin’ Rancho. I’m a traveling horse trainer/clinician, who became a non-essential worker during the COVID-19 lockdown. Then, in 2022, we bounced back. We were nomads looking for horse training adventure and liver treats. Work paid for the trip; it was part clinic tour, part travelogue, part squirrel hunt. But mostly an unapologetic celebration of sunsets, horses, RV parks, roadkill, diverse landscapes, and undomesticated women.

It’s a book made of made of adjectives and nouns, blue skies and tornado watches, resorts and reservations, open roads to the horizon, and one-lane dead-ends. We emerge from the truck in a cloud of dog hair and sunflower shells, like disoriented and scruffy rock stars in a GPS haze, not entirely lost or found.

This book isn’t about training, although there are horses in it. It’s a follow-up of Stable Relation, my first book, but my life changed in ways I would never have guessed, so don’t expect the usual sequel. Undomesticated Women is a travel memoir, a peek behind the curtains of what my job is like. I wanted to see this beautiful country, do some time travel, and explore thoughts and memories now that I’ve become a gray mare.

Mister would tell you it’s his memoir about being tasked with the unreasonable job of guarding me against a wild range of dangers. Like eating dinner late.

MY REVIEW

I’ve recently read some memoirs and enjoyed them and was curious about Undomesticated Women. The title intrigued me and the idea of a woman of my age traveling the country with only her dog as a companion sure had me curious how it went. And a horse whisperer to boot. I’m sure she probably doesn’t tag herself as one, but that’s what came to mind when I read about some of her experiences with the noble animals.

I was hooked right off the bat. From how the germ of an idea blossomed into a possibility and then to reality, right down to what kind of travel camper to choose, I didn’t want to miss a thing. The details of doing some practice camping on different places on her farm to see how Mister, her canine companion, would deal with the cramped quarters and being separated from the other dogs and The Dude Rancher, her husband, to how she’d cram everything she need for the long trip into the nooks and crannies, all of it was interesting… and entertaining.

I’m a horse lover. Was one of those young girls that had the statues on all my shelves, along with all those great books like The Black Stallion, Black Beauty and Little Black, A Pony, and posters hung in every available place. The author had me laughing and crying as she related her journey of cross country clinics with owners and trainers and their horses. Kind of reminded me of the show Heartland, which I love.

Anna Blake is such a great storyteller. Yes, a storyteller. This may not be a work of fiction, but all great storytellers leave you hanging on each sentence, wanting more and more. And that’s how it was with her book. If she can entertain me this much with her memoir, it makes me wonder where her imagination could take me in a work of fiction. I’d read it!

My Dog, The Author

After the COVID lockdown was over, I was eager to get back on the road and do my job live again. I’m a horse trainer who’d been sitting in an office chair, giving lessons in Zoom meetings. Now I wanted to see the country again. My dog, Mister, and I took to the road pulling our A-frame trailer, the Rollin’ Rancho. We were nomads traveling 14,000 miles, across 30 states, and seeing both oceans.

Driving days were long and to stay awake, I listened to audiobooks, nibbled sunflower seeds, and took my dog’s advice on when to stop for a walk. Mister was my self-care specialist. He walked me to keep my hips loose. He called me to dinner after a long workday. And he was an emotional anchor for me because no matter what other people think about me, Mister always thinks my only job is to be with him. He makes things that simple.

Writing is part of every day for me. I’ve been blogging since 2010, along with publishing books, writing poetry, and even screenplays. It’s my habit to use words to sort out my thoughts. At home, I usually write early in the morning before the chaos begins. When traveling, I’m oddly comfortable writing in an airport bar.

When I was training locally, I always kept a notebook with me to scribble down thoughts as I drove from farm to farm. In preparing for this long-distance road trip, I added some technology to keep us safer, including a cell phone holder on the dash and a voice-to-text app. At first, it was just for notes and ideas that I wanted to remember. One day, I dictated part of an essay and then felt guilty. I had already betrayed my paper tablet. Was I betraying my laptop now?

The app didn’t work that well, not speaking horse like I do. It would have to become bilingual. Once I downloaded the file, the number of corrections was bewildering. If I hadn’t edited it that night, I wouldn’t be able to recognize what I was talking about a day later. But with technology changing so fast, I’m always afraid if I don’t keep up, I’ll have to hire somebody’s kid to do my banking.

The next day, I tried again. It was a quiet afternoon on the back roads in North Carolina. I wanted to write about the last stop, so I thought out my sentences and slowly enunciated every word. Mister was in the passenger seat, strapped into his safety bed. Like most dogs, he sees me at my worst and keeps my secrets.

I paused in my dictation and thought for a long moment. The microphone was waiting. Mister sat up and let out one bark. The screen added the word “what.” Our eyes met, and he didn’t look away. Was Mister going to write a tell-all book of his own?

I’m an animal advocate, award-winning author, solo RV traveler, old-school feminist, dog companion, unabashed lover of sunsets, and professional horse trainer/clinician. I’m sixty-nine years old. I’ve done just about everything and done it well. No longer auditioning.

My books include:
Stable Relation, A memoir of one woman’s spirited journey home.
Relaxed & Forward: Relationship advice from your horse.
Barn Dance, Nickers, brays, bleats, howls, and quacks: Tales from the herd.
Horse Prayers, Poems from the prairie.
Going Steady, More relationship advice from your horse.

Undomesticated Women: Anecdotal Evidence from the Road

I was born in Cavalier County, North Dakota, in 1954, the youngest daughter in a farm family. Now I live at Infinity Farm, on the flat, windy, treeless prairie of Colorado with a herd of reprobates, raconteurs, and our moral compass, Edgar Rice Burro. Previously, I was a self-employed goldsmith, showing one-of-a-kind artwork in galleries from coast to coast. My Denver studio and gallery was shared with generations of good dogs.

Early writing included a few screenplays, one of which was produced independently, and articles for several periodicals. Every Friday since 2010, I have posted an unconventional and popular blog about life on the farm and horse training. My unique perspective combines Calming Signals and Affirmative Training for a special method of understanding, training, and respecting animals.

Dead Letters by P.J. Murphy

.
Category:  Adult Fiction (18+), 349 pages
Genre:  Mystery, Literary Fiction
Publisher:  P.J. Murphy
Release date:   May 2023
Content Rating:  PG-13 +M. The book is not violent, and swearing is infrequent. There are a number of references to ghosts, but the atmosphere is more gothic than scary (with one exception). However, it is a book aimed squarely at adults, with references to depression and mental illness.

Book Description:

“If you want to find me, search within these pages.”

Bestselling author Richard Debden is missing. The only clue: a copy of his unpublished final novel delivered to his ex-girlfriend, Amy. When those closest to Richard reunite for his memorial, Amy turns to Chris, his former best friend, to help unravel the mystery. Could Richard still be alive and in need of their help?

Richard’s manuscript tells of two abandoned children in wartime Britain, instructed by a shadowy Postmaster to deliver letters to ghosts and release them from their torment. As Chris and Amy delve into the text, they identify parallels between fiction and reality; clues to a trail that leads across the country and – they hope – to Richard.

But they are not the only interested party. A mysterious society is following them, their motives unclear. Can Chris and Amy unlock the secrets of Dead Letters, or will more sinister forces get there first?

Dead Letters is the captivating second novel by P.J. Murphy, author of Troubleshot.

Interview with Author P. J. Murphy
.
  • Where did you get the idea for Dead Letters?

Dead Letters resulted from two ideas coming together. The first was my desire to write a gothic ghost story – not scary but depicting ghosts in unusual situations and considering them as memories of people and events. The second was the idea of puzzling apart the truth behind a novel. After reading my previous novels, some people told me they could guess the real-life inspiration behind certain characters and events. I thought, ‘There’s a novel in that!’ Put the two together, and you have Dead Letters.

  • What other writers do you admire?

I try to read wide and avoid limiting myself to particular genres. Saying that, the author I have read the most is probably Terry Pratchett. The wisdom and humour that’s packed into his books is really quite staggering. The Vimes ones have some pretty good mystery plots, too. I also enjoy the work of Jeffrey Eugenides. His style of writing is very evocative and, at times, jaw-droppingly beautiful.

  • Which format do you prefer reading in: paperback or ebook?

Hmm, that’s a tricky one! I never thought I would get into ebooks until I received an e-reader as a gift ten years ago. I was hooked! They are so easy to carry around, and you don’t need to find shelf space for all your books at home. On the other hand, there is something special about having a physical copy of a book, particularly if it’s one of your favourites. I guess that’s why there’s such a market for special editions these days.

  • Have you had any of your books made into audiobooks? If so, what are the challenges of producing an audiobook?

I have recently ventured into the wonderful world of audiobooks. An audiobook version of Dead Letters should go live around when this interview is published. The main challenge for me was finding a reader with the right voice. Most of Dead Letters is narrated in the first person, so the narrator’s voice had to match our protagonist’s. I was lucky enough to receive many excellent auditions, making choosing difficult. Ultimately, I went with a narrator who hit the beats as I had written them, and I’m very excited to hear the final version.

If you’re interested in reading more, I have blogged about my experiences commissioning an audiobook on my website www.pjmurphywriter.com

  • What is your next project?

I have a few ideas on the go, including a road trip and an unusual take on a spy novel. The one closest to finishing, though, is the sequel to my satirical novel, Troubleshot. This will be set in Geneva, where I now live, and should be amusing to anyone who’s lived or worked internationally. I’m also releasing one of my older novels, Yesterday’s Shadow, in February. It’s a coming-of-age tale about homelessness and the dark side of faith. Believe it or not, it also contains plenty of humour!

Meet the Author:

P.J. Murphy writes novels that introduce unusual and humorous twists to classic genres. If you pick up one of his books, you’re in for an interesting read that never loses its sense of fun. As a writer, P.J. tries to stick to the adage ‘write what you know’, although with the addition, ‘just make sure you exaggerate and distort it beyond all recognition’. He is planning to write a novel about taking a road trip with a parrot. He has never owned a parrot.

Excerpt from Murder at a Scottish Castle:

The Shaws followed the non-melodic fits and starts of instruments being tuned to the left of the castle and a gigantic expanse of green lawn. Brody and Grandpa were on either side of her. Wallace, on her naughty list for chasing the squirrel, didn’t once tug against the lead in Brody’s hand.

They reached the edge of the field and Paislee paused in wonder at the explosion of bright hues. The sun broke from behind a cloud to shine on brass and metal fittings. Twelve bands were to compete, between eight and ten players, each with matching kilts in a variety of tartans.

“Well, isnae that something,” Grandpa said with amazement in his tone.

“It’s impressive.” Paislee smiled at a few familiar faces. Bagpipers, drummers, and the band directors gathered in clusters. Each group was here to perform their best.

Three stands had been erected for spectators and the band members who would sit and watch the others when they weren’t playing.

“Hey—there’s Jerry.” Grandpa stepped toward Jerry McFadden, member of Clan Campbell, sporting a kilt in green, blue, and black. When Jerry wasn’t delivering her yarn, he rocked the bagpipes. His light brown hair matched his thick mustache.

Jerry saw them and lowered his bagpipe. “Bonny day after all for the competition,” he said as they neared him. “I was a wee bit worried during the downpour this morning.”

“God’s way of giving the cows a bath,” Grandpa said sagely. “How are you part of the Campbell clan?”

Jerry placed his pipes at his shiny black brogues. “My mother is a Campbell cousin. Why do you ask?”

“Sorcha told us it was a rule,” Grandpa said.

“Sorcha, is it?” Jerry teased.

Paislee laughed when Grandpa turned red.

“She gave us a tour,” Brody said. “Mum’s got her cashmere in the gift shop.”

“Well, that is nice,” Jerry said.

“I hope it means I’ll need tae increase my order of cashmere.” Paislee smiled. “We’ll see. But today is not about that—today is about you and the competition. How are you feeling regarding the outcome?”

“Verra well.” Jerry leaned toward them. “We’ve mastered a new tune tae land the number one spot. I was voted by my mates tae be our soloist this year.”

“What aboot the other bands?” Grandpa asked. He gestured with his head to the musicians around them.

“The Grants will come oot strong too, due tae old-fashioned practice, but I think Clan Cunningham is rattled.” Jerry nodded to the stand at their right. “Jory Baxter and Clyde Cunningham were arguing over something.”

“Who is Clyde?” Grandpa asked.

Brody was jerked to the side as Wallace saw another dog—also on a lead, thank heaven. Paislee put her hand on Brody’s shoulder and arched her brow.

“Clyde Cunningham is the pipe major, or band director. He organizes the group and keeps tempo. He’s responsible for turning in the program tae the judges, and also the liaison between the band and the GHB, Great Highland Bagpipe, Council.” Jerry dipped his head toward a short man with copper hair in the Campbell tartan. “That’s Mattias Campbell, our pipe major. Keeps us in line. Though they dinnae play a physical instrument during competition they are crucial tae the performance.”

Brody couldn’t hide his eagerness to explore, so Paislee tapped Jerry on the arm. “Good luck tae you. Where will you be sitting? We’ll cheer you on.”

“This stand behind us. If you’ve a mind tae place a wager, I think we’ve got a guid chance at the win. Thanks!” Jerry picked up his pipes and joined the group around Mattias.

Paislee and Brody, with Wallace, went to the stands and scored a seat on the second row, near the end. There were three stands surrounding a circular field, with enough seating for two hundred.

“Can I go play, Mum?” Brody pointed to a group of other kids his age kicking a football around in the barren field, well within her eyesight.

“Sure. But leave Wallace here, please.”

Brody reluctantly handed her Wallace’s lead.

“Maybe you can take him later,” Paislee said.

“Okay!” Brody ran off.

Wallace chuffed as his boy joined the others and sat with his furry back to the bands. A protest? Paislee opened her handbag and dug around for a dog treat. “Here you go.”

Wallace snapped up the biscuit and swallowed, then returned to his vigil. She poured water into a popup water bowl and placed it in the grass for the dog along with a chew toy. She returned to her seat next to Grandpa, content that Wallace would alert her if anything happened to Brody and focused on the circular field.

At noon on the dot, judge Meri McVie stepped into the center field. She had a sharp, foxlike face and naturally orange hair, with brown eyes behind silver-framed glasses that gazed at the spectators steadily. White shirt beneath a black jacket, a blue and light-green kilt, and a badge attached to a ribbon around her neck proclaimed her position.

Meri blew her whistle to get everyone’s attention, though the competitors were ready to go. Each clan sat grouped together. The Campbells were on the first two rows below Paislee and Grandpa, along with Clan Buchan, Clan Lincoln, and Clan MacTavish.

Across from Paislee, Clan Grant took an entire two rows, and above them sat Sorcha and Cinda. Sorcha had changed her clothes and now wore a Grant tartan blazer over navy-blue slacks. Clan Douglas, Clan Sinclair, and Clan McKinley waited their turn. On the third stand was Clan Cunningham, Clan Cameron, Clan Graham, and Clan Fraser.

“Hello!” Meri said in clear voice. “Welcome tae this year’s Ramsey Castle Competition.”

Applause sounded.

The kids had come to the stands to see the beginning. Paislee gave Brody his water bottle and offered a granola bar that he declined.

“Let me go over the rules.” Meri read from a clipboard she held. “Each band will play for fifteen minutes or less, but no more. The songs must match what has been turned in to the judges. Myself, and Connor Armington.” The second judge was much older, seventy to Meri’s fifty, and his jacket didn’t quite button over his belly. “If they dinnae match that team will be disqualified.”

Murmurs could be heard on the benches.

“Last year’s champion will be the final act of the day. Clan Grant will perform second tae last, and Clan Campbell third.” Meri raised her pointed chin and lowered the clipboard. “This is my tenth year of judging this competition. Each year the talent gets better and better. It is my privilege tae announce the first of our twelve bands, Clan MacTavish!”

The clapping was loud as Meri left the grass to stand on the edge of the circle, her posture perfect. Connor also had a clipboard. The judges walked around as the band played and made various marks. The MacTavish kilts were red with sky blue and black, the shirts white, the jackets sky blue. They were a newer band and so had placed at the bottom to start.

Clan Fraser played next. The band’s kilts were a robin’s egg blue with red and gray, the jacket gray over a white shirt. It seemed that each outfit would have to be custom-made to fit the person and Paislee wanted a closer look at the way the arms fit for ease of movement, whether at the drums or the bagpipes. The horizontal and vertical patterns allowed for a large variety in the tartan.

The difference between a plaid and a tartan was the replicated pattern in the fabric at the vertical and horizontal ends tied to a specific clan, whereas plaid described a crisscross of any sizes or colors.

Finally, it was time for Clan Campbell: Jerry’s team. So far Meri hadn’t called anyone out for breaking the rules, though Paislee wouldn’t know. She thought everyone sounded wonderful, and her hands were sore from applauding so enthusiastically.

In the last four hours, Brody had come for water or snacks but mostly had stayed with his new mates. She admired how he could make friends like that. She’d always been shy.

Grandpa finished his water. “Shouldae brought me flask,” he said, smacking his lips. “Dinnae suppose you have anything stashed in that bag of yours?”

“I do not have whisky, Grandpa. That would be correct.” Paislee didn’t mind the occasional dram but wasn’t much of a drinker. Her vice was chocolate.

“That handbag is big enough for a whole keg,” he remarked.

She glanced at him, then back at the field. “I have an extra water bottle, if you’d like that.”

“No thanks. I’ll wait for the good stuff.” Grandpa scratched his bearded chin. “There will be the good stuff, eh?”

“Drinks will be served with the meat afterward, aye.” In years past, an outdoor eating area had been set up next to several large barbecues. There were kegs of beer and whisky both. Tea as well as coffee, and of course, cases of Irn-Bru, Scotland’s number one soft drink.

“I’d expect no less at a castle,” Grandpa said.

“Did you ever play the bagpipes, Grandpa?”

“A wee bit.” Grandpa touched the brim of this tam. “Enough tae know it’s best left tae the professionals.”

“Jerry called it a GHB.”

“Aye.” Grandpa pointed to Jerry as he took his position on the field with his bandmates. “The Great Highland Bagpipe. The leather bag collects air, they each have two tenor drones—the shorter pipes there, and the big one over Jerry’s shoulder is called a great drone.”

“I don’t see the reeds Sorcha was talking about,” Paislee said.

“Oh, you wouldnae,” Grandpa said. “They’re inside the instrument.”

“I had tae learn the recorder in primary, and so did Brody. P3.” Paislee smiled at Grandpa as she remembered the awful noise her son had made, and she’d been no better. “You’re lucky you weren’t with us then. It was a racket.”

Grandpa chuckled. “Do you think he’ll really want tae learn the drums?”

“I’m praying he’ll forget when he’s playing football next weekend,” Paislee said.

“That’s the way of it,” Grandpa agreed. “Lads have short memories.”

When no one answered, she stepped inside and reached for the light switch she knew was on the wall.

“Alex? I’m not leaving until I make sure you’re okay, so you might as well answer me.”

She cocked an ear and heard water running. He wouldn’t try to drown himself, would he? Olivia tossed off her coat, set the ice cream and cookies on the counter in the kitchen, and was just headed down the hall to the master suite when a light flicked on and Alex stood there wearing nothing but a towel.

The wise thing for her to do would have been to spin around and give him his privacy. However, she was too worried about him and still too keyed up from what had happened to listen to the voice telling her to retreat.

She walked the rest of the way into the room, fisted her hands on her hips, and studied him from the top of his head where water droplets clung to the tips of his hair, down his stoic face, past that delectable cleft in his chin, and along the impressive muscles in his arms, chest, and abs. The physician in her categorized his scars, making note of several burn marks and one spot on his side that looked like a gunshot wound. She walked around him, convinced the corresponding wound on his back was the exit point.

What terrors had this man survived?

Her admiration for him climbed several notches. Alex was a survivor, whether he realized it or not.

“Hi,” she said softly, walking back around to face him. His nearly naked state left her feeling wave after wave of things better left alone, but despite how much it unsettled her, she wasn’t quite ready to return to the kitchen.

Marti Mickkleson and her ghostly Grandma Bertie are back!

With only one month to go until Marti meets the conditions of her late father’s will and gains control of her trust fund, she’s determined to be on her best behavior. No admitting that she can see ghosts and certainly no talking to the dead.

But her mother’s roped her into a new family project, her new office has a mysterious haunt, Grandma Bertie’s digging up mysteries from the past, her friend Dmitri’s barely speaking to her, and her sister’s life is falling apart. It’s enough to make a girl miss her days of flipping sort-of-beef patties on a Burger Buster grill.

Then things get really bad.

With both a cold case and a new murder on her hands, her “best behavior” won’t cut it. Protecting her family may cost her more than a trust fund. It may cost Marti her life—or the life of someone she loves.

Join Marti and Grandma Bertie in the follow-up to Ghosts in Glass Houses!

About Kay Charles

Kay Charles is the much nicer, mystery-writing alter ego of dark fiction writer Patricia Lillie (author of The Cuckoo Girls, a 2020 Bram Stoker Award® finalist.) Like her evil twin, Kay grew up in a haunted house in a small town in Northeast Ohio, earned her MFA from Seton Hill University’s Writing Popular Fiction program, teaches in Southern New Hampshire University’s MFA in Creative Writing program, and is addicted to coffee, chocolate, and cake. She also knits and sometimes purls. Both their lives would be much easier if one of them enjoyed housework.
