MY REVIEW

It’s the near future and rats have become the top of the food chain. Guess where that leaves us. In a day to day fight to survive. There’s some electricity and the only safe time to venture out to forage is during the day.

This story felt somewhat believable. Maybe not with the size of the rats, but definitely with their dominion over us. I’ve always believed rats and cockroaches would be here long after us.

I expected some bloody mayhem. Whew, some scenes had me cringing. The rats are so vicious and relentless. And the author gave me a little something else to keep me entertained. There’s more to these rat strikes than meets the eye!

A solid creature feature that kept me focused from beginning to end.

Enjoy this Interview with the authors of Pets in Space 8

1) Tell us a bit about your story in Pets in Space 8?

– Tana Stone: When Tegan takes a job as a midwife for the galaxy’s only all-female bounty-hunting crew, she thinks the job will be simple. Deliver some babies, earn some credits, repeat. She doesn’t expect to make an unscheduled stop on the deadly planet that’s home to the Den of Thieves. But she needs medical supplies, and she’s assigned two brawny Dothvek barbarians to protect her, not to mention the ship’s shapeshifting pet glurkin, Pog. What could go wrong?

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: The Alien’s Falconer is a sapphic (f/f) romance between space pirate Georgia and spaceship captain Ellabee who she’s trying to rob. Caught in the battle of wills between the two strong women is Georgia’s alien parrot who will do his best to turn them from enemies into friends – and maybe more…

2) What was the inspiration for your story in Pets in Space 8?

– Carol Van Natta: Earlier this year, I went on three-week visit to Australia, and I fell in love with the Daintree Rainforest, west of the Great Barrier Reef. I’d already been planning my story, Stellar Drift, so I set all the action in a continent-sized rainforest on a colonized planet in the far future. The rainforest is lush, mysterious, and full of history, traits that are reflected the main character Sairy, a pilot who has many secrets. Forest ranger Houyen, determined to find the source of a fever that’s spreading, was inspired by the indigenous elders in Daintree who want to preserve the land and their way of life, while accepting that change is inevitable.

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: This book is part of the Aliens and Animals series, a sci-fi romance where each standalone novel includes some sort of animal. Captain Ellabee has appeared as a side character in the book 3, The Alien’s Farmer, and Pets in Space 8 was the perfect opportunity for us to write an entire story about her.

Until now, most of the animals have been from Earth (Highland cows, sheep, even a rhino) so we really wanted to come up with an alien animal for this book. Since Georgia is a space pirate, giving her an alien parrot seemed like the natural thing to do.

3) Introduce the main characters in your story in Pets in Space 8, and describe them in one sentence each.

– Carol Van Natta: In Stellar Drift, my story in Pets in Space 8, a forest ranger convinces a pilot to help him look for the source of a deadly fever that is spreading. Exploration pilot Sairy Sarvand has lived in the rainforest for the past three years, hiding from her past, until kind and sexy Ranger Houyen Albasrey asks for help only she can provide. Houyen can’t resist mysteries, whether it’s figuring out what’s causing a fever or wanting to get to know the elusive Sairy better.

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: Abducted from England by aliens as a teenager, Georgia has become a space pirate to survive. She’s accompanied by a parrot-like alien bird who echoes her words back to her, somewhat making up for her lonely existence.

Ellabee is the blue-skinned captain of her spaceship and commands her alien crew with ease. Don’t mistake her kindness for weakness though, she’ll stop at nothing to protect what matters to her.

4) What does the pet in your Pets in Space 8 story look like and what part does the pet play in the plot?

– Tana Stone: My pet, Pog, is a Lycithian shape-shifting glurkin. His natural form is a small, round puff of bright-green fur with tiny feet and little black eyes tucked into the fluff BUT he can shift into any form at will. This talent comes in handy when my story’s protagonists are running from dangerous mercenaries.

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: Aba, the resident alien parrot with four beady eyes, four wings, and both scales and feathers that change colour depending on his mood. He keeps our space pirate company when she’s alone, repeats unhelpful phrases, and blurts out all sorts of secrets.

5) What was the inspiration for the pet in your story for Pets in Space 8?

– Carol Van Natta: Kayala is a genetically engineered pet made to look like a big, scary gargoyle, the kind you can find on top of gothic castles in Europe. She was inspired by two rescued pitbulls owned by my friend. Despite the breed’s bad press, they’re two of the sweetest, most loving dogs you’d ever want to meet. And as I once knew a Great Dane that aspired to be a lapdog (only his head would actually fit in anyone’s lap), I gave that trait to Kayala as well.

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: We wanted to give our lonely space pirate Georgia a nice companion and what better than one that can talk back? Of course, since she’s in space, we needed something a little more exotic than a regular parrot, so that’s how alien parrot Aba was born.

6) If your story is part of a series, tell us how your story in Pets in Space 8 relates to the rest of the series.

– Tana Stone: My story, RESCUE, is part of my Barbarians of the Sand Planet series. Pog is a member of the all-female bounty-hunting crew (and the personal pet of the Lycithian shape-shifter and bounty hunter Bexli). He’s integral to the women’s bounty-hunting enterprise and scampers around their ship at will. When the crew takes on a midwife, Pog takes to her quickly, which is how he becomes enmeshed in the adventure.

– Carol Van Natta: Stellar Drift is set in my Central Galactic Concordance universe. There’s a big damn story arc going on in the main series that starts with Last Ship Off Polaris-G. It’s about evolution, rebellion, and romance, plus grand adventures and all sorts of space opera goodness. Stellar Drift and the stories I’ve written for previous Pets in Space anthologies are all standalone sidetrips (with pets!) that can be read in any order, with a few Easter eggs for fans of the main series.

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: The Alien’s Falconer is part of the Aliens and Animals series and it links back to the previous book in the series, The Alien’s Farmer. We don’t want to give any spoilers, but our space captain Ellabee plays an important part in bringing two people together and we spend a lot of time on her ship.

You can find out more about the series HERE

7) What do you like most about writing about pets?

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: We love pets, they’re wonderful companions. Everyone deserves one, even fictional people. Otherwise they get a bit lonely. And coming up with alien pets is so much fun!

8) Do you have any pets yourself? If so, tell us about them.

– Tana Stone: I have two dogs and three cats–all rescues! Our two dogs are lab mixes–one black and one yellow–and they are the first line of defense when it comes to deadly UPS and Amazon delivery trucks. Two of our cats are tabbies–one brown and one orange–and we got them as kittens less than a year ago. They love shredding upholstery and stalking flies. Our other cat is a neurotic calico who prefers to be seen and heard (and given treats) but not touched.

Carol Van Natta: I adore cats, and have been honored to share my home with quite a few over the years. My current feline companions are Captain and the Fluffbot. They’re rescued litter-mates, brothers, and a bonded pair, meaning twice the silliness because they’re still teenagers. Captain is a short-haired black kitty who ever-so-politely steals toys from my desk. Fluffbot is a medium-haired black kitty who likes supervising all the action from the highest cat tower available. They have informed me that my next Pets in Space story damn well better feature cats as the heroes. 😺

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: Yes, Arizona has a lovely cuddly dog called Fudgestick who snores loudly and keeps her company while she writes. Skye has a hyperactive kitten called Valkyrie who often can’t decide whether she wants to cuddle or nibble on her human. They’re still working on the question on who owns the keyboard.

9) What was your favorite part of writing your story for Pets in Space 8?

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: For Arizona, her favourite bits are the ones with the alien parrot Aba. He’s such a mischievous character and always causing trouble, which is right up her wheelhouse.

Skye liked writing the dynamic between the two main characters: they start as enemies, with both trying to outwit the other, but slowly realise they’re more similar than they thought and that what they feel for each other might be more than just animosity…

10) What’s next on your writing schedule? And what’s at the top of your to-be-read list?

– Arizona Tape and Skye MacKinnon: Skye is writing the third book in her Starlight Monsters series, My Big Scaly Alien Naga, an action-packed, spicy monster romance which is set to release early next year. She’s currently reading the latest releases in the Intergalactic Dating Agency, preferably paired with a large mug of tea and some dark chocolate.

Arizona is working on her paranormal romance series with fated mates (Crescent Lake Shifters) There are animals there too (bears and dragons), but they’re of the shifter variety!

 They Lurk

by Wesley Thomas

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

Jack loves horror movies. Reminds me of me when I was a teenager. Well, that’s me now too. I love the stuff. Books and movies. So, I was really curious about this book.  What could be killing people? And what’s with draining the victims of their Vitamin D? That’s different. Turns out Jack and his older brother, Dan, should have thought twice about trying to solve the mystery. There’s more than a serial killer stalking the streets. There be monsters too.

At times the story felt a bit slow for me. I guess I’m used to horror where it starts out with a bang and revs up til the end. Once things did start happening, I was glad to know what I knew about the brothers and their family dynamics. Their gradual bonding through the shared horrors really had me pulling for them. And I liked the surprise ending. I couldn’t imagine how the author would wrap it up, but it worked for me.

Synopsis

A small town falls prey to monsters, ghouls, conspiracy, and one very hungry serial killer, with only two young men to protect it. When a horror movie-obsessed teenager discovers that people in his hometown have dropped dead, drained of vitamin D, puzzling and terrifying the authorities, Jack realizes this is no fantasy. With the reluctant help of his older brother, they dive into unimaginable horror that he thought was safely confined to the world of film and literature. If that wasn’t bad enough, an uncaptured native serial killer decides to revisit his old hunting grounds.
His days of classrooms and cafeteria food are over.

Murder at Midnight by Katharine Schellman Banner

Murder at Midnight
by Katharine Schellman
September 18 – October 13, 2023 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

Perfect for fans of Deanna Raybourn and Ashley Weaver, when a body is found shot to death after an unexpected snowstorm, Lily Adler quickly realizes that some people will stop at nothing to bury their secrets.

.

Regency widow Lily Adler is looking forward to a quiet Christmastide away from the schemes and secrets she witnessed daily in London. Not only will she be visiting the family of her late husband; she will be reunited with Captain Jack Hartley, her friend and confidante, finally returned after a long voyage at sea. But secrets aren’t only found in London. Jack’s younger sister, Amelia, is the center of neighborhood scandal and gossip. She refuses to tell anyone what really happened, even when an unexpected snowstorm strands the neighborhood families together after a Christmas ball. Stuck until the snow stops, the Adlers, Hartleys, and their neighbors settle in for the night, only to be awakened in the morning by the scream of a maid who has just discovered a dead body.

The victim was the well-to-do son of a local gentleman–the same man whose name has become so scandalously linked to Amelia’s.

With the snow still falling and no way to come or go, it’s clear that someone in the house was responsible for the young man’s death. When suspicion instantly falls on Jack’s sister, he and Lily must unmask the true culprit before Amelia is convicted of a crime she didn’t commit.

Read an excerpt:
Lily sat bolt upright. Where had the sound come from? It hadn’t been loud . . . another part of the house? For a moment, in the pressing silence, she wondered if she had drifted back to sleep without realizing it and imagined the whole thing. But a moment later, the sounds of a commotion rose just outside her window. Lily dashed to the window, throwing it open with some effort and peering out into the swirl of snow and early- morning light. The guest room she had been given was one of the smaller ones—the better to quickly heat rooms that hadn’t been prepared in advance—and as was typical for such rooms, it lacked a pretty view. Hers looked over what she realized after a moment must be the poultry yard. Darkly clad figures who she could guess were servants stumbled through the thick layer of snow that had fallen, trying to reach the two people in the middle of the yard. One Lily could see from her vantage only as a still, upright figure, hand outstretched and pointing toward the second person, who lay sprawled on the ground. The one on the ground was half covered by the ice and snow, unmoving. Lily grabbed the dressing gown from the chair, pulled on her shoes, and ran from the room. In the hallway, a few guests were poking their heads out of their doors, hair tousled and faces creased with sleep, inquiring grumpily if anyone had heard an odd noise. Lily didn’t stop to consider propriety or worry about what anyone else might think before she yelled “Jack!” as loudly as she could. She didn’t know which room he had been given, but a moment later, a door past the stairs was flung open and the navy captain’s head appeared. “What is it?” he demanded. He was already dressed and wearing his driving coat over his clothing. That was odd at such an early hour, but Lily didn’t have time to be surprised. “Downstairs.” In spite of the months they had spent apart, Lily knew she could depend on him to understand and act quickly. “Something happened. We have to help.” And in spite of those months apart, he didn’t stop to ask questions. More guests were emerging, summoned by Lily’s shout, and questions were beginning to fly back and forth as she dashed down the stairs, Jack on her heels. They didn’t need to wonder where to go; on the floor below, Mrs. Grantham was following a stately-looking woman who might have been the housekeeper or another upper servant. Their pace was just barely too dignified to be a run, but they couldn’t hide their worry as they disappeared down the steps to the kitchen. Lily and Jack hurried after them. The servants’ staircase was narrow and cold. At the bottom, servants clustered in the kitchen, talking in shrill, anxious voices as the cook tried to keep some order. The underservants glanced uneasily at Lily and Jack as they came into the kitchen, but no one seemed to know what to do or say. The door to the yard had been left wide open, and the wind blew in gusts of snow and icy morning light. Outside, more servants were gathered, though they parted like a wave as the housekeeper led Mrs. Grantham out to see what had happened. As Lily and Jack tried to follow, they were stopped by the frail but determined body of the butler, who interposed himself between them and the open door. “Madam, sir, perhaps you would care to return to your rooms? Breakfast will be ready shortly.” Jack drew himself up, clearly prepared to use his rank to push his way past the aging servant. Before he could say anything, though, and before Lily could think how to reply, Mrs. Grantham turned sharply. “What is . . .” She trailed off, eyeing Lily and Jack with trepidation. She looked ready to send them on their way with some commonplace assurance. But half a dozen emotions chased their way across her face in that moment, and she instead asked, “Mrs. Adler, how many of the rumors about you are true?” “That depends on the rumors,” Lily replied calmly, though her heart was pounding. Behind Mrs. Grantham, she could see the limbs of the eerie, still figure sticking out of the snowbank. “Though if you refer only to the ones that are most relevant at this moment . . .” She turned her gaze pointedly toward the body in the snow. “There is indeed some truth to them.” Mrs. Grantham hesitated, then seemed to make up her mind in a rush. She stepped aside, pulling the confused housekeeper with her. There were boots for the servants lined up next to the door, crusted with mud from repeated use. Lily pulled off her delicate evening slippers, slid her bare feet into the pair that looked closest to her size, and followed as she and Jack were ushered into the yard, their eyes fixed on what awaited them there. A man dressed in borrowed clothes, his skin white with cold, his hair thick with clumps of ice and snow. He could have fallen, hit his head, been caught in the storm and frozen. He could still be alive, in need of help. He could have had an innocent reason for being out in the storm. He could have. But this close, Lily could see the snow that had been kicked aside and trampled by half a dozen feet in the servants’ frantic attempts to clear it away. The icy powder was too thick on the ground for her to see the mud of the yard. But it was still stained with red and brown from where the man’s life had leaked away in the night. The once-snowy linen of his shirt was stained the same color, jagged and torn from the bullet that had ended his life. The gun that had fired it had been unearthed beside him, as snow-logged as his own body. The man’s frozen eyes and mouth were wide open, as though he had not believed until the last moment that whoever had faced him in that yard could be capable of the shot that had ended his life. *** Excerpt from Murder at Midnight by Katharine Schellman.  A Dark Breed

Monsters & Mayhem

by Patrick McNulty

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

I’d just finished a book with some similar elements in it and loved it so I went looking through my books for something along the same lines and found this one.

Nick just wanted to take his family on a much needed vacation to unwind and regroup. He didn’t plan on the blizzard and running off the road.  Now they must survive the worst the Colorado mountains can deliver. And it’s not just a snow storm. They found safe haven in a small cabin. Little did they know it was the worst place they could be. And when they thought they were saving a strangers life, they were actually endangering their own. Now, the cabin is surrounded by unspeakable monsters and they have nowhere to run.

I love it when the elements, the worst that Mother Nature can throw at you, are a vital part of survival. Not just the monsters lurking outside. And the monsters Patrick created are horrible. Imaging coming face to face with such evil and knowing you have only yourself to rely on made this such an intense read for me.  It’s the first in the Monsters & Mayhem Collection and I loved it. You can bet I’ll be reading the next and the next……

Out of cell phone range and out of options, Nick and his family creep along through the storm until one wrong turn sends their ancient Dodge Caravan off the edge of the road and down a mountain slope better suited for skiing. Battered and bruised, but still alive, Nick leads his family to shelter in an abandoned cabin only to find a pregnant woman being held prisoner in a nearby outbuilding. Soon after he releases the woman he realizes his mistake and that no good deed goes unpunished… A Dark Breed is the terrifying first book in the Monsters & Mayhem Collection . Starr and Sunny are best friends with a super-unbreakable
bond––at least until Starr tells a little lie that spirals into a great big
mess! Will the lie cost Starr her best friend, her passing science grade, and
her spot onstage at Fifth Grade Family Night? Or will friendship and the power
of forgiveness show a whole new squad how to shine?

Starr of the Show is a heartwarming tale about
two friends, with a gentle message about forgiveness and letting go. Leigh
Reagan Alley tells a sweet story filled with preteen drama, humor, and witty
dialogue that entertains you from beginning to end. The characters are
compelling and feel like real elementary school kids. Even the fight between
Starr and Sunny is adorable, and their friendship is the story’s heartbeat.
Kids will find it easy to relate to either of them. The illustrations by Mark
Nathan Hurry add a nice touch to bring the characters to life. This is the kind
of book kids should read before aging up for Harry Potter. I loved every moment
of it and will gladly recommend it for preteens.” –Pikasho Deka for

“Oi. Mister Grump? Your carthorse has arrived.”

Murphy stood up from where he was crouched down to inspect the latest delivery. “Carthorse? Hardly. I’ve already brought the delivery inside. And for the millionth time, Tea. I am not a grump.”

“No, you just hate mornings, afternoons, people, sunlight, basically everyone but your lovely George.” Teagen was, as always, immune to his glowering at them. “Well?”

“Hate is a strong word. I don’t hate you.” Murphy wasn’t entirely sure he liked his best friend every day, but he didn’t hate them. “Come on then, Tea. We’ve got a fresh batch of honey delivered yesterday. We also need to check on the two-year casks. Probably want another year on them just to get them where we want the flavour.”

For six years, Murphy had run Honey Bear Brewery. It had been a play on his nickname of Paddington, earned during his brief stint in the military, owing to his surname of Baird and his tall, stocky build. His dark brown hair and scruffy beard certainly didn’t help put people off the comparison.

His grumbly stubbornness came from both his Irish and Scottish sides. His ma had always claimed he bore more than a passing resemblance to his great-granddad Murphy. She’d been so proud when he’d decided to continue the family tradition of running a brewery.

For the first two years, Murphy had gone with simple ales. But then, he’d developed a close friendship with a local beekeeper, George Sheth. The younger man had been struggling to sell his honey.

His pride and joy.

Inspired by George, Murphy had decided to begin experimenting with family recipes. Something from his Scottish side. His da had a collection of mead ones that dated back a century or more. It had taken some trial and error to get everything right, but his brewery and the small pub attached to it were doing well six years later.

“Well? Did you finally ask our playwright out?”

“Tea.” Murphy shook his head at their teasing grin. “It’s George Bernard Sheth. Not Shaw. Plus his ma’s Scottish, not Irish, and his dad’s from India, so I highly doubt either of them are related to a famed Irish playwright.”

“Must you take all the joy out of my play on names and words? Besides if they didn’t want anyone to make the connection, why name him George Bernard? Fine, fine. Well? Did you ask him out?”

“He’s named for his ma, Georgie, and I think a great-uncle. And no, I… couldn’t ask him out.”

MY REVIEW

Werewolves. Bipedal. Long fangs. Tall pointy ears. Sharp claws. And the very unnatural way they look and move. All very horrific. One of my favorite cryptids.

Imagine one of these creatures stalking you. Waiting for the right time and place. And then……. there’s no place to hide. That’s what happens to Travis and his best friend. They’re just doing what teenagers do. Out exploring a trainyard. Then they see something. Something unnatural. And it sees them.

The killings begin. One body after another. Bloody, mangled corpses. What’s strange is there seems to be a purpose to the killings. Soon you learn this isn’t the first time the beast has visited McGregor Falls. It’s back to settle the score.

This story moves quickly, the plot is unique, and the characters, even the minor ones, are genuine. But don’t get too attached. The werewolves are cunning. They like a game of cat and mouse before they move in to rip you to shreds.

I can’t remember how I came across this book. Maybe it was the cover. Eerie and foreboding. Whatever made me stop and take a closer look, I’m glad. This was a howling good read.

Synopsis

“It ain’t nothin’ like you’ve ever seen before, Sheriff.”

That was when Sheriff Cotton Briggs found the body, slaughtered beyond recognition inside a random boxcar. The trains have always moved through McGregor Falls, Texas, but now they have brought something into town, something Briggs had hoped was forever in the past.

Fifteen-year-old Travis Braniff while exploring an old trainyard with a friend, encounters that same something. Both boys escape the creature’s murderous intent, but now it is after them and will stop at nothing to prevent its secret from being revealed…too soon.

In Lyn I. Kelly’s newest novel, the werewolf mythology is explored and rewritten, as vengeance is rendered onto a small Texas town and secrets are revealed. Skinwalker. Lycanthrope. Werewolf. Whatever the name, whatever the legend, an old evil has found its way into McGregor Falls, and no one is safe.

The Jade Labyrinth (The Jade Chronicles #3)

By Alanna Mackenzie

Genre: Science Fiction/ Fantasy
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: 12 September, 2023

Blurb:

A meeting. A maze. A perilous journey back to an Empire on the edge of chaos.

Walter Saltanetska, leader of the Jade Rebellion, is nearly ready to return to the heart of the AI-ruled Empire that has branded him a treasonous fugitive. His mandate is clear: to reprogram the AI Masters before their earth-destroying habits spiral out of control.

First, he must brave gruelling training in a land fraught with danger—rugged mountains haunted by spirits, a parched desert patrolled by watchful drones, and a labyrinthine cave guarded by armed robots. As his physical, mental, and magical abilities are tested by harrowing encounters, Walter must work to resist forces that threaten to destabilize his mission.

The biggest threat he faces is not one he encounters along the course of his journey, but one that originates within him. Walter returns to the Empire’s capital in a mind-altering disguise that proves to be a double-edged sword. Drawing him closer to a soul mate who rekindles his admiration for the AI Masters, it also distances Walter from the human emotions that sparked his desire to join the Rebellion. In his final showdown with the AI Masters, Walter must keep his mind under control, or risk jeopardizing the mission that he and his allies are counting on to reverse a looming tidal wave of destruction.

The thrilling third installment in The Jade Chronicles, The Jade Labyrinth weaves dystopian science-fiction with high fantasy while exploring an essential subject: the perils and promise of artificial intelligence.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Waiting for night to fall was the hardest part. The tedium was made worse by lining up to pass the security checkpoint, and afterwards they broke camp and had to wait a few more hours until dinner was ready. The traders appeared to be in good spirits, Tyrian most of all. He drank copious amounts of brandy and mulled wine that night around a blazing campfire and ordered his fellow traders to sing and strum various eclectic instruments. One was a sitar, an oriental-sounding instrument from the Southern Jungles, another was a khoborga, a traditional Xeyan’na flute that had a harsh ring to it, and the third type of instrument was a meyre, a hollowed-out drum stretched with leather hide.

The revelry did not interest Walter, but he was grateful for the distraction. He was intending to discreetly slip away after dinner to do his work, but Tyrian grabbed him by the wrist just as he finished the last of his curried chickpeas.

“Will you be staying for the entertainment?” Tyrian asked boorishly. As drunk as he was, the lead trader seemed oddly lucid, and the way his moss-green eyes bored into Walter made the young man shiver.

“I’m tired. Think I’ll have an early night tonight,” Walter replied.

“Your friend… she’s a pretty one,” Tyrian drawled, gazing across the campfire toward Eva, who was bobbing her head in time with the music. “I was hoping she’d join in the diversions.”

Walter set his jaw. The last thing he wanted was this unrefined trader making designs on his friend Eva. Now that he thought of it, the trader had seemed romantically interested in her from the beginning. Although Walter had first attributed the trader’s lingering gaze to curiosity about her mixed-race origins, he now realized it was because of something more. But Walter recognized an opportunity for further distraction. He hated to do this to his friend, but he needed every advantage he could get with these wily traders.

“She’s an excellent dancer,” Walter exclaimed, and as soon as the words were out of his mouth he regretted them. He had no idea how well Eva danced, and he didn’t want to put her on the spot. But what better way to ensure that he could work uninterrupted than to have Eva distract the traders with a dance?

“Is that so?” Tyrian said. “Well, let’s see it, then.”

Walter reddened as Tyrian called across the campfire to Eva, causing the sitar player’s melodious rhythms to stop abruptly. “Pretty lady,” Tyrian drawled, taking another swig of brandy. “Your friend here says you can dance.”

Eva glanced at Walter, and the rebel leader tried to convey an expression of pleading in his eyes. Eva caught on, but Walter could see that she was not pleased with him.

“My friend is too flattering,” she replied coldly, “but I do enjoy dancing. With a partner, of course,” she added.

Walter froze. He half-expected her to invite him to dance with her, but instead she beckoned for Tyrian to come closer. The brilliance of her strategy was apparent. As the three instrumentalists began their tune, a sharply cadenced flamenco, Eva bowed before Tyrian and held out her arms in an invitation. The lead trader eagerly accepted the offer, and the other traders formed a circle around them, cheering and clinking their brandy-filled glasses as the music grew more animated. Walter watched for a few moments in rapt fascination; he was not so captivated by the dancing itself, but rather by the sheer resourcefulness of his friend, who had been able to gracefully choreograph a routine in mere seconds.

With the traders’ attention thoroughly diverted, Walter was able to relax as he crept away into the shadows of the gloomy late-autumn night. The temperature was plunging as the sun had recently set, and Walter felt the assaulting chill of the air once he left the campfire. To avoid any encounters with the traders, he decided to do his work in the open air, behind a nearby rock formation, rather than in one of the wagons.

It all happened very quickly. Walter consumed the lydion—about half a teaspoonful was all that was required—and immediately he felt his mind shift into a different gear. He studied the code of his spyware detection program, and with fresh eyes, determined what its weaknesses were and how they could be shored up. It was startlingly easy to spot them with his newly heightened sense of awareness, a sort of hyper-sensitivity to the nuanced cause and effect of any computational system.

As the lydion permeated his body, Walter’s mind became clear, focused, and unplagued by anxieties. He often felt that way after a seizure, as though a buildup of tension within his brain had erupted, clearing away the debris from his neural pathways. With lydion, he felt as though he could accomplish the most complex programming task in a matter of minutes. There was nothing getting in the way—no distracting ego, and most importantly, no emotional baggage attached to any task he set out to accomplish. A meditative sense of calm accompanied his work, along with the feeling that he was conserving energy that would have otherwise dissipated.

Within twenty minutes, the upgraded program was completed. Walter could still hear the reassuring background noise of the drumming and the swirling, exotic melodies of the sitar and the khoborga. As the new spyware program ran, he felt tranquil, but poised to react to any hint of a result. And, within a few more minutes, he found it: a backdoor trojan horse, almost negligible in its size, that had burrowed its way onto the tablet’s hard drive.

Investigating its origins, he saw the culprit. A mail attachment that somebody named ‘vokyrv81’ had delivered a few days ago into his inbox, that he had opened mindlessly, revealing an advertisement for hotels in the Barrens. He realized, too, that the name spelled backwards was that of the trader he and Eva had been speaking to, Vrykov. He cursed himself for having opened the attachment, for it was doing its grisly work to mine the contents of his tablet.

 The Horror At Pleasant Brook

by Kevin Lucia

.

Genre: Horror / Supernatural / Halloween

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

What did I just read?! I love horror stories with small, remote towns. Makes getting help darn near impossible. And that usually means everyone knows everyone. But, you will find it hard to get to know this towns residents. You meet them. They die. Gruesomely. Horribly. In the synopsis it’s mentioned “until nothing else remains”. The victim’s remains are all that remain.

It’s Halloween and Covid lockdown in Pleasant Brook. The only things stirring are the monsters. So many of them. And they want you to come out and play. Or, perhaps they’ll come in. I’d just recently watched Phantoms, the movie based off the book by Dean Koontz, and felt some of those same terrifying feelings while reading this book.

I love my horror year round but I’m always looking for a good scare for the Halloween season. Kevin Lucia got me good.

Synopsis

This Halloween, a malevolent, creeping horror invades a small, isolated town nestled deep in the Adirondacks. It cares nothing for this town’s secrets, prejudices, or flaws. Its only desires are to consume everything in its path and spread, until nothing else remains.

It is ancient, pitiless, and unstoppable. It is the horror at Pleasant Brook.
