Caro wipes sweat from her forehead with her wrist, keeping the dirt-covered fingers of her glove pointed away from her face. She doesn’t want to streak her cheeks with mud.

“What about angels?” she asks, pulling off her gloves and adjusting her broad-brimmed sun hat.

“Angels?” I laugh. She hasn’t given up, only changed tacks. “What about them?”

“Do you believe in them?”

I look at her angular, still unlined face and wonder why she’s strug¬gling with this idea of deity today. “Why is this important now?”

“I saw something,” she says. “Hovering over the kids yesterday when they were playing in the trees. Something I don’t know how to explain.”

“Heat haze,” I guess. “Northern lights during the day. Electromag¬netic activity caused by sun flares. Auras.”

She lowers her eyes, a signal that she thinks I’m being flippant. In the world of all possible answers, I haven’t stumbled upon the right one.

“It’s a portent.” She stares into my eyes as if to send me a telepathic message. “You know, like Mom said. Something we’re supposed to notice.”

I tense. Our mother was not an oracle I would believe, but whatever Caro saw has meaning to her. I should pay attention instead of making light of it, even though I can’t resist teasing her. She’s always so serious.

“Okay. What does it portend?”

“I did something you’re going to be angry about.”

I stretch my neck, close my eyes to shutter my annoyance, and wait.

(from the short story, “Hands Clean: Afterburner”)

Perry, as he was better known, stood on a grassy hill, overlooking the expanse of the beach and the churning waves just past sunset. Warm fur rubbing against his ankles reminded him he wasn’t alone, and he looked down with a gentle smile. A black cat weaved her away around his legs, purring loudly and looking up at him expectantly.

“Calling you “Cat” sounds straight ridiculous, but you refuse to tell me your name.”

The cat meowed and he chuckled. “Fine. Just “Cat”, it is.” He lifted her into his arms and rubbed noses. “It’s not often I ask animals to do my dirty work, so I thank you and promise to feed you.” Perry locked eyes with the cat and spoke softly in her mind. “Do you remember the plan? Are you ready to strike? When you get to the bar, be sure to give me a visual.”

At her reassuring purr, he put her down and let her run to her destination. He kept his eyes trained on the huge wood door of the Blue Rose bar, which stood several yards from his position on the beach hill. Cat approached the bar’s entrance and sat on the walkway, patiently waiting, as she licked a paw. Soon enough, the heavy door swung open, and a laughing couple emerged from the bar. Cat darted inside the dimly lit front area and, within seconds, gave him the visual he needed.

Perry almost immediately spotted his target, seated at a table with a large man. She was unchanged, both in face and body, even after a millennium.

A tea shop
owner good girl and a reformed microbrewer bad boy reunite in this wonderfully
wicked love story.

Sometimes the second sip is sweetest.

In the cozy town of Birch Lake, tea shop owner Poppy Kitchener thought she’d
left her mistakes, and her failed marriage, in the past. But when her
ex-husband, Alistair Miller, turns up—as charming and irritatingly handsome as
ever—those old feelings float to the surface. To top it off, he has a puzzling
proposition: pretend they’re still married for his cousin’s wedding in exchange
for a lucrative business deal with his family.

Easy enough, right? After all, this could be Poppy’s last chance to get
closure, grow her business and use Alistair’s knowledge of
microbrewing to help her finish that winning recipe for the tea competition.

But even after all this time, he still knows how to make her laugh. And he’s
changed in ways that make Poppy wonder about the man he’s become… Can she trust
this new Alistair with her heart, or will a second chance brew up disaster?

From showing up to glowing up, the characters in Afterglow Books are on the
path to leading their best lives and finding sizzling romance along the way.

It was all well and good that Alistair wanted to help her get a fair deal from his family, but it was also a lot sus. He’d literally never cared about her position in the family before this. Part of why her marriage hadn’t been the love match she’d believed it to be.

Grimacing while he nervously kneaded his own legs, Alistair took his time answering.

Over his shoulder, she noticed Sera and Liberty coming closer to them. The doubts that she’d been struggling to contain were assuaged by their presence. The warmth of that bond and friendship gave her strength.

“If you can’t answer me, then we’re done,” she said. Merle had been right about her needing closure, but she wasn’t getting back on the hamster wheel that had been her life with Alistair.

“I’m trying.”

“Good for you. Try harder. You and I don’t speak the same language.”

He inhaled deeply, making his chest flex, something she noted and tried to ignore. But Alistair had always been a physical guy, working out, and it was hard to ignore how ripped he was. One of the things that had originally drawn her eye to him was his body. He looked like a sexier version of Harry Styles, mixed with Timothée Chalamet, with a little old-school Chris Pine—Princess Diaries era. One look at him, and she’d fallen hard.

“Fine. I am on a leave of absence—”

“You need me to get you back in?” Disappointed in herself for believing for half a second that he might be here for some other reason. Of course it was about pleasing his father and reclaiming his place in the family company.

“No. NO. Let me start over. I don’t want to get back in. I am trying to right past wrongs. I should have read that contract before I told you to sign it. I want you to get what you deserve, not continue being screwed over by Lancaster-Spencer Tea Makers as you have been.”

If what he was saying was true… But how could she trust Alistair again? What did it say about her that she really wanted to? It had taken her five long years to start repairing that damage, and it was only the bond she had with Sera and Liberty that made the healing easier. “That’s nice,” she said.

“If you’re going to be like that, then don’t bother.”

“Like what?” she demanded, feeling her own anger building for the first time. Something she hadn’t allowed since she’d walked out of their flat in Kensington.

“Treating me like I deserve to be treated. If this isn’t the time and you’re not ready to let go of the past, well, I respect that. But my father is going to come for you, and he’s got good corporate solicitors that rarely lose.”

“Tell me something I don’t know,” she said. But his honesty here was appreciated. “How would us pretending to be married help?”

“As my wife, you have some sway on the board. Mum and George will stand with us when we go up against Dad.”

“If I went, when would we leave and return? I can’t just jet off and leave my store,” she said.

“I thought we’d leave on Sunday—”

“In two days?”

He had the grace to look sheepish. “I was afraid if I gave you too much time to think, you’d say no.”

“Legend,” she said sarcastically.

He pushed his hand through his hair and looked down at the table before locking eyes with her. “I get it. I’m an ass, and I treated you poorly. I am sorry. You know that. I’ve apologized. I’m trying to at least get something good for you out of the mess that our marriage was.”

Her heart tugged. She couldn’t resist Ali when he was sincere, which wasn’t as often as she would have liked. But now…when the change in him flashed…

“I accepted your apology in that email. But I didn’t expect… Well I had no idea what it would be like seeing you in person again,” she said.

Damn Ali. At this moment, he embodied all the things she liked about him, owning his mistakes in a way that he’d only done when they were dating. She wouldn’t deny that hearing him say she deserved better than Lancaster-Spencer made her melt a little.

“Me either,” he admitted.

“I need some time to think.” But she already was leaning toward going with him. Did that make her the most pitiful woman on the planet? Luckily, she had “Bad Idea Right?” by Olivia Rodrigo on replay in her head.

Cutting herself a break, she was going to send him on his way. Chances were, she was going to the UK on Sunday for a week, which meant she needed to get more staff in. That didn’t mean that Alistair shouldn’t sweat a little. Things came too easily to him the first time…

“I’ll give you my answer tomorrow,” she said, standing.

Alistair gave her a tight nod and then turned to walk out of the shop.

She had to be careful she wasn’t all hello, love when she should be goodbye, lover. It was a delicate balance, and one only she could weigh and decide on.

How To Charm a Nerd

WiCKed Sisters Book 2

She’s kind of
a witch. He’s definitely a nerd. And this Halloween they’re
letting their geek flags fly in this playful romantic comedy from USA TODAY bestselling
author Katherine Garbera.

Dungeons and dragons and nerds, oh my…

The spooky season is almost here, and occultist and tarot reader Liberty
Wakefield is already feelin’ it. But ever since her sick nan muttered the name
of Liberty’s mysterious biological father, nothing feels normal. Not her
friends, her family, nor the quirky shop she runs with her besties. So maybe
it’s time for Liberty to track down the father she’s never met. Of course, that
means getting a little help from the sexy nerd she’s been not-so-secretly
vibing since last summer…

Merle Rutland hasn’t met anyone like the vivacious, bubbly Liberty. Part of him

Only, somewhere between Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, pumpkins and a few
ridiculously hot sexy-times, Liberty and Merle discover their respective weirds
might be a match. Yet as Halloween draws closer, it
seems everyone has skeletons in the closet…and nothing spells
disaster quite like being haunted by the past…

A witchy,
witty, wickedly sexy romance about love, books, friendship and the unexpected
connections that bind us together…

Bookbinding (verb): the art of creating something magical out of fabric,
leather and paper.

As a lonely foster kid, Serafina Conte sought refuge in handmaking journals—and
writing her wishes within their pages. Now, in the quirky new age store she

skills, real magic or not, Sera’s finally ready to be the leading lady of her
life story…

Until her plot hits a twist.

After the death of her mentor, Ford Sitwell, all the loneliness and insecurity
of her past returns. The only balm is the box of antique books he left to her.
But Ford’s suspicious brooding grandson, Wes, is ready to think the worst of
her—and get his grandfather’s books back! The first part doesn’t bother her.
The second? Forget it. Sera won’t give Wes the books so easily. But it’s clear
he’s seeking something more, an emotional connection no book can replace. So
she offers a deal—work in her store for six weeks, and in return, she’ll help
him get closure by sharing memories of his late grandfather.

Yes, Wes seems grumpy, but actually he’s hot…and maybe kind? Deep down?
And when desire and vulnerability work their charms, Sera begins to wonder if
the best stories aren’t the ones you intend, but the ones that take you where
you least expected…

From showing up to glowing up, these characters are on the path to leading

We locked eyes for a moment, the dim light and dark shadows between us. Her wavy sunset-blonde hair was in a messy bun, with tendrils falling around her face. I wanted to let her hair down, scoop it up with my fingers, inhale the flowery scent of her shampoo. I didn’t move a single part of me except my eyes, which traced the dotting of piercings up her left ear and then roamed across to her smallish nose that had just a blush of light freckles that matched her hair and down to her button-shaped mouth.

“Okay,” she said, her shoulder sliding out from the old sweatshirt that she cut the hood off of. I wanted to kiss her shoulder so badly, I had to put my hand over

my mouth and pretend to cough.

The blackout made the moment dreamy. I reached over and pulled her shirt up to cover her shoulder, and when my fingers made contact with her soft skin, her expression changed, softened, and relaxed. She smiled.

“I’ll get the wine.” She popped up, slid her feet into her fuzzy slippers, walked over to the kitchen area, and snatched the almost full bottle. Then she said, “Do you have a set of cards? We can play Bullshit. Remember how much we used to love that game?”

I laughed and said, “I think it was the only drinking game we knew in high school.”

“I’m pretty sure we were the only people who actually found a way to make it a drinking game.”

In the darkness, her hair piled up, she looked like a princess but also like an angel, and while I couldn’t find those words in the moment, that’s what I saw. A princess-angel with a pretty but foul mouth. The combination was exhilarating.

I lean in until my mouth hovers over her lips and say, “I’m going to fuck the

defiance out of you.” My voice is rough, and my dick is like steel rod.

Her eyes widen and a quick intake of breath escapes her lips.

Without a second thought, I crash my mouth down on hers. When she opens for

me, I shove my tongue down her throat, lapping every taste because one kiss isn’t

going to be enough.

The beast in me roars with glee when she moans into my mouth and wraps her

hands around my neck. My hands move down her back and hips, until they hit her

ass. I lift her and grind my hard cock against her core.

My heart races, pounding against my ribcage like a wild animal. She has an

innocence wrapped in an undeniable allure, and tonight, she was more captivating

than ever.

“Nico,” she breathes, her voice barely more than a whisper. I reluctantly pull back

and found her eyes gazing up at me, filled with desire and trust.

I lean closer, my breath hot against her skin, “You drive me fucking crazy. I can’t

help but feel… drawn to you.” I confess. My fingers trace the curve of her jaw,

and she leans into my touch, urging me to come closer.

“What…” She hesitates, as if unsure what to say. “What are you doing?”

“Whatever I want,” I tell her.

Then, as if struck by lightning, I close the distance, capturing her mouth with

mine. The kiss was a collision of souls, pouring out of all the unspoken words that

had built between us. In response, her hands weave into my hair, pulling me

deeper. Our kiss was frantic, hungry, and rough. There was nothing sweet about

  1. It was filled with passion and anger.

I deepen the kiss, tilting my head, wanting more and savoring the taste of her.

As the kiss rages on, I slip my arms around her waist, drawing her closer. My dick

begs to be let in.

The world outside fades into a distant memory, and all that mattered was her—the

way she made me feel, the way she responds to each stroke of my fingers. I feel

her body arch against me as if begging for something more.

“Fuck,” I moan into her mouth. The velvet softness of her skin beneath my hands,

the warmth radiating from her body, it was intoxicating.

When she starts to grind her hips against mine, all bets are off. My control snaps,

and with one arm holding her, I pull her pants off.

“What are you doing?” She gasps, pulling away.

In modern-day Iceland, a place of glaciers, volcanoes, and
legends, the Norns have foretold a sorcerous invasion that could destroy
everything.
Magnús, an elf of the huldufólk, is driven by the murder of his human lover a
century ago to save those humans he can, and to figure out what is behind
recent troll attacks on tourists. But the Norns have spoken. He must protect
Altair, a young human from Boston, who is bringing a dangerous magical force to

Reykjavik and into danger. A witch, a berserker, and more elves are along for

Robert Winter is a recovering lawyer who likes writing about
love and adventure much more than drafting a legal brief. Once upon a time, he
went to Georgetown University law school. Upon graduation, he moved to New York
to work in a large law firm, but later returned to Washington, DC. The legal
work was entertaining and Robert spent a lot of time in bankruptcy court,
usually representing either groups of creditor or the debtors themselves. But
legal work didn’t satisfy the urge Robert felt to tell stories.

When he turned 50, Robert left behind the (allegedly)
glamorous world of international law firms and bankruptcy court to pursue his
real passion. Now he lives in Montreal with his husband, studying French
between trips to exotic locations.

When Robert isn’t writing, he loves to cook Indian food. The
aromas of the spice blends excite and challenge him. Although he’s never been
to India, the food seems comforting and home-like. Add a trip to the Golden
Triangle to the bucket list!

the opposite sex. Blind date fiascos until they discover one another.
Denny’s wife—the only woman he’s ever loved—died the year before and his

in college left her skeptical that she would ever be able to find love. Both
the widower and the bachelorette hope for a second chance at love.
When Denny and Jill find themselves lustfully drawn to one another, they’re
ashamed of their secret encounters. When friends suspect there might be

THE MUSIC BLARED FROM the speakers when Denny entered Last Call. The pulsing beat perked him up and removed any regrets he’d had earlier about showing up. It would be good to see his friends. He needed a break from work and from missing Sara. And it would be nice to go out with friends rather than with a woman who couldn’t carry on a conversation. The date with Barbie lingered, and not in a pleasant way.

“We wondered if you’d make it,” Colt said when Denny joined him and Haley at the bar. “And you beat everyone else. Good job.”

Haley gave him a hug. “How are you, Denny? How did the date go the other night?”

Denny and Colt both groaned as an answer.

“I don’t understand. My cousin recommended her so highly.”

“She just wasn’t my type, Haley. I’m doubtful there’s anyone out there who’s my type, so I’m done.”

“But don’t give up, old man,” Colt patted him on the back. “You just haven’t met the right one yet.”

“I’m taking a break, remember? Even Jeff agreed to back off.”

Colt slapped his forehead. “I forgot, but just in case, I brought you something.” Colt reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out several small square packages. Denny stared at them and wondered why Colt was carrying around condoms.

“Why do you need those?” Denny asked.

“I don’t, but you do.” Colt put them in the pocket of Denny’s blue shirt. “We get these by the caseloads to take with us to the villages. A delivery came today, and I thought of you. No need to thank me.”

Denny laughed. “If I have to wait for my friends to fix me up with a worthwhile woman, I won’t need these for a very long time. And now that I’ve sworn off dating, these are going to rot.”

“Better to be safe,” Colt said. “You never know when something might happen. I’d hate for you to miss an opportunity just because you weren’t prepared.”

Denny turned to look at the woman who now stood next to him. Jill, Kiley’s friend and money handler. They had met only a few times before, but Denny had liked her immediately.

“Jill, I didn’t know you were in town,” Denny said. “Good to see you.”

“Hi there. I just got here today.” Jill greeted them all with a big smile. He’d never noticed what a lovely grin she had. But she looked different.

“Did you do something with your hair?” he asked.

Jill laughed. “You’re very observant. I guess it’s been a few months since we’ve seen one another. I’m letting it go back to my natural color. Platinum was too much. I’m almost thirty after all.”

Again, that smile as the rest of them laughed.

“I like it.” Then he turned to his beer. He hadn’t meant to say that. But she looked so damn sexy in a denim skirt a few inches above her knees and a red stripe top that outlined her breasts and dipped just enough to see her cleavage. He needed to get a grip before he lost his mind completely and kissed her.

“How have you been?” Jill asked quietly when they were settled. “It’s been almost a year, right?”

He nodded. “Next month. I’m surviving. The worst part has been the concern of my friends.” When Jill gave him a puzzled look, he plunged ahead. “They’re all intent on fixing me up on dates. So far, they’ve all been disasters.”

“I can relate to that. To avoid Kiley and my mother pestering me to get out more, I started online dating this past year. After my last date, I’ve sworn off it.”

“That bad? Same thing here. My last date did it for me, too. I didn’t realize there were so many empty-headed women out there. No offense because that certainly doesn’t fit you.”

“None taken, if you don’t mind me saying that there are some pretty lame guys as well. I think I’ve had a date with all of them.”

For the first time in more than a year, Denny felt as if a huge burden had been lifted from his shoulders. It would be all right. And suddenly, the woman next to him with the dark blonde hair curling softly around her jaw aroused in him feelings he hadn’t had since long before Sara died. He tried not to look at her chest as she leaned toward him. She gave his arm a squeeze, which sent a shiver down his spine.

When she rose and headed for the back of the bar, he followed her.

KILEY DROVE OUT TO Long Island on Saturday morning in the rental car the studio provided whenever she needed it. She put down the top on the BMW, excited to be driving on one of those rare, cloudless days of endless blue sky. At eight o’clock, the temperature was a lovely seventy degrees and rising steadily. She was glad she’d thrown in her new bikini at the last minute, along with a gauzy see-through sundress for wearing over the bathing suit. She loved to dress like an old hippie with lots of lace and wispy material that seemed to float on the air. When she worked, she mostly dressed down because her show took her on adventures not usually chosen by the average tourist. She hiked through rain forests, floated down crocodile infested rivers, and climbed rugged mountains free of cleared paths. She loved it, but she also liked taking off the hiking boots and thick protective socks and running barefoot on the beach. She wouldn’t mind racing naked over the dunes, but she’d heard the beaches on the eastern end of the island could be rocky. Not to mention, crowded.

So now she followed Route 27, the Sunrise Highway, to the eastern end of Long Island to East Hampton, where the community of Montauk plunked itself down right on the Atlantic Ocean as a hamlet on the dunes. The Montauk Lighthouse, still in operation as the fifth largest working lighthouse in the United States, dominated the end of Montauk Point, sitting high on a dune guarding and protecting the hamlet. She felt herself relax as the miles flew by, hoping to make it to Taylor’s well before noon.

She almost missed the turn off for the house and made a sharp right turn a little too fast. Her tires spun in the sand of the beach road, and she lost control as the BMW turned sideways. She worked hard to turn the wheel, not paying attention to anything else on the road. When she’d corrected it and straightened out the wheels, she looked up too late to see a Jeep Cherokee in front of her driving much slower than she was. She tried to brake, but it was too late. She barreled right into the back of the vehicle, bringing them both to a halt.

“What the hell are you doing?” a dude dressed in shorts and a tank top yelled as he jumped out of the Jeep. “You’re driving too fast down this road.”

She got out of the driver’s seat, afraid to look at the damage. Instead, she looked up into angry brown eyes as the man approached her. If he wasn’t so angry, he’d be handsome. But now she needed to focus.

“I guess I lost control.”

“Obviously.” He nearly growled at her.

“It was an accident,” she meekly offered as she approached the front of her vehicle.

“Again, obviously. I’d hate to think what might have happened if you’d meant to hit us.”

Her eyes filled with tears, but she fought them back. No need to give this guy any more ammunition.

“Is everyone all right?” she asked when she realized angry dude was a passenger in the backseat, which meant more people were riding inside.

“Yes, they’re fine.” As he spoke, the front doors of the Jeep opened. Another good-looking man jumped out of the driver’s side, and a female out the other.

“What’s the damage?” the driver asked as he approached the rear of his car.

“Not much that I can see,” angry dude said. “I think that we might have lucked out.”

“I’m so sorry,” Kiley said. “I was trying to get control of my car in this sand, and I didn’t see you in front of me.”

“Don’t sweat it. I’m Colt by the way. This is Haley, and this is Jeff.” He pointed his thumb at the one who’d been so mean to her.

“I’m Kiley.” She held out her hand to Colt and then Haley. She decided not to press her luck with the one called Jeff. He was still glaring at her.

“I know you,” Haley said. “I’ve seen your show, Aroma Roads.

“Yup, that’s where you’ve probably seen me.” She turned to Colt. “Your name is Colt? That’s funny because I’m visiting a friend here this weekend who has a brother named Colt—pretty distinctive name.”

He laughed. “It’s an unusual name, unless you’re a horse. I’m surprised there’d be another Colt out on this road, so who’s your friend?”

“Taylor Bennett.”

He laughed again. “Well, that is a coincidence, because I have a sister with the same name. You must be the friend she said was coming out this weekend.”

“That’s great—I mean, it’s not the best way to meet my weekend roomies, now is it?”

“Just be more careful next time,” angry dude said. “You could have done real damage.”

“Yes, sir.” She gave a mock salute hoping to be funny, but his scowl deepened. Too bad he was so damn attractive. She could tell he worked out because his tight tank only accentuated his broad shoulders and firm pecs, revealing arms that were muscular and thick. She almost licked her lips, but the disgust written across his face stopped her cold.
