Swamp Monster Massacre

by Hunter Shea

16004542

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

A skunk ape is Flprida’s own version of the big hairy guy, Sasquatch. They’re a private creature, until they get riled. And a group of tourists are about to stir the hornet’s nest.

I’m a huge fan of Hunter Shea’s books and this comes in as one of my favorites. While a shorter story, I’d call it a novella, he packs it with some compelling, original character’s and nonstop action. Then he brings on the horrendous in all it’s fury.

It surprised me how much I came to like Rooster. He’s not your typical hero. After killing a gangster, he hijacks a boat full of tourists in the Everglades. They seize an opportunity and try to take back control. When the boat crashes, they kill a young skunk ape. And thus begins a bloody dash as the rest of the apes come for retribution. He tried to do the right thing for these people.  It was his fault they were in this situation. He really tried.

I must mention the twins. The girls had that blond beauty thing going on and I immediately thought, no brains so they must be chum for the beasts. Actually, they were double tough and I was so enamored of them that I was hoping Hunter would let them live. He’s known for knocking off characters willy nilly.

This story moves fast. The author introduces his characters. The how and why is told. And then it goes insane. The apes are monstrous. Just look at the cover. They’re mad and have only thing thing on their mind. Get the humans who killed one of their own. Kill the humans. And that’s what they proceed to do. Hunter doesn’t spare on the gory bits and actually had this one scene with alligator missiles that had me me cringing and laughing out loud.

If you like crazy, gory horror and creatures straight out of nightmares, step right up. Hunter delivers in oh so many ways.

Synopsis

The swamp belongs to them. Humans are only prey.

Deep in the overgrown swamps of Florida, where humans rarely dare to enter, lives a race of creatures long thought to be only the stuff of legend. They walk upright but are stronger, taller and more brutal than any man. And when a small boat of tourists, held captive by a fleeing criminal, accidentally kills one of the swamp dwellers’ young, the creatures are filled with a terrifyingly human emotion—a merciless lust for vengeance that will paint the trees red with blood.

Snowbeast

by Peter Tremayne

36505893

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

There’s a mythical beast dwelling in the Scottish mountains. Those not local to the area scoff at the tales of death the creature has caused. Those that know better don’t intrude on its territory. But the beast no longer recognizes boundaries. It goes where it will. Kills what it will. First, animals are found torn to pieces. Then the bodies of people. Something has changed and all should fear what’s coming.

This story had so much promise. I love crytpid tales, especially about the big hairy guys, sasquatch or abominable. Sadly, about halfway in this story got too strange, the thing with the Monk just didn’t work for me. I wanted more rampaging beast and less of the why.

I did like some of the characters and the author did put me in the location. I’m a sucker for stories where the environment plays a large roll in how the characters fight and/or survive.  But again, not enough yeti. At least, not the kind of creature I wanted.

I’ve read a lot of Peter’s books and, even though they didn’t all blow me away, he had plenty of stories that managed to keep me dialed in. And I’ll always check out what he writes next.

Synopsis

No man could have made such prints, even if a man were walking barefoot in the dead of night across an inhospitable mountain slope.

When Ellen MacDonald arrives for a surprise visit to her uncle’s remote lodge on the lower slopes of the snow-swept Cairngorms, Doctor MacDonald is on a most unusual case.

At the time-hallowed monastery of St Bechan, a brother has fallen dangerously ill with a mysterious sickness. The doctor’s diagnosis suggests a baffling fever, but to the monks of St Bechan, steeped in the dark myths of the Black Peak, it is a case of possession.

Sudden, savage deaths follow – animals, and then men. In the shadow of the jagged peaks towering against the grey skies of Scotland an immemorial legend has come to light – a legend reaching across hundreds of years and thousands of miles. In the chill mountains a low, fretful wail rises and falls with the driving wind – the cry of the SNOWBEAST!

Welcome to my Saturday Screams where I share books that, well, make you scream!

Today’s offering is a mermaid story. Not for the squeamish!

Take a close look at the cover. Doesn’t it give you the chills?

The Mermaid’s Revenge

by Amy Cross

37655334

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

This was a wicked little mermaid tale. Ever wanted to see a real one? You might want to rethink that.

Sylvia lives in a penthouse apartment with her mother. The only other people she interacts with are her mother’s two employees. She’s rarely allowed outside, home schooled and is never to go to the lower level.

But one night that changes. Her mother takes her to the forbidden room and reveals her find. It’s a real live mermaid. Terrified of the strange looking creature, Sylvia is also drawn to it.

The mermaid’s fate is sealed. But what about Sylvia’s?

This was a page turner from the first chapter. I was curious about why Sylvia was kept cut off from the world. And once the author introduced her alluring yet horrific mermaid and revealed the mother’s motives, the story took that anticipated turn towards the dark side.

I watched a movie called She where a mermaid was captured to be put on display. It was incredible. As was the mermaid in this book. It appeared to be beautiful and helpless. But that proved to be deceiving. It was deadly and motivated. Drawing from that movie, I could see so much that occurred. It really was horrific. I felt so bad for Sylvia. She’s just a little girl and there’s a murderous mermaid about to wreck her world.

The author gave me a lean, mean read. No wasted words while still fleshing out the characters enough to allow me to connect and like or dislike them. And the mystery behind what the mother wanted from the mermaid gave the story a little something extra.

I love a dark mermaid tale and this one had it all. Villainous characters, an innocent protagonist, and a mermaid straight out of a horror film. The copious bloody scenes and warped motivations all left me wondering whether discovering real mermaids would be such a good thing.

Synopsis

Terrified of the world, Sylvia lives with her mother in a luxury penthouse apartment. For Sylvia, everything is a cause for fear and panic. Isolated and friendless, she has no interest in the outside world at all. And then, one day, her mother unveils her latest purchase.

A mermaid.

A real, live mermaid, captured and placed in a water tank.

For Sylvia, the mermaid is both terrifying and fascinating. Repulsive and beautiful. Soon, however, Sylvia discovers that the mermaid hasn’t just been brought to London so it can be put on display. And as the mermaid makes plans to escape its terrible fate, Sylvia is thrown into a horrific battle for survival.

The Mermaid’s Revenge is the story of a scared little girl who comes face to face with the true horrors of the natural world.

I couldn’t resist the synopsis for Thea. Always looking for more vampire horror. And I’d read some of Eric’s Bigfoot Wars books so it was a no-brainer to read his very short story The Night Of The Beasts.

Thea

A Vampire Story

by Steven Jenkins

31440297

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

My Review

Thea is a sad and sordid story of a mother’s obsession with saving her daughter. After losing her first one to drugs, her drunken focus is on keeping her remaining daughter safe, at any cost.

I can’t say one good thing about Thea’s mother. Poor Thea. And soon enough, poor mother.

Even though I suspected where this was going to go, it was still well worth the read. Especially as I enjoy a dark, twisty vampire story.

The Night Of The Beasts

by Eric S. Brown

The Night of the Beasts by [Brown, Eric S. ]

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror / Short Story

My Review

The author once again provides bloody sasquatch mayhem with The Night Of The Beasts, a very brief account that occurs over one night during the Bigfoot Wars.

For folks who prefer their beasts to be true villains with nothing on their minds but ripping humans into little bitty bits, this won’t disappoint. But don’t get attached to the character’s. They’re not at the top of the food chain anymore. As one man soon learns when the hospital where he works comes under attack.

I swear, I held my breath through most of this. It started so calmly and bulldozed into carnage. Wicked fun. And bravo for the killer cover art. Take a close look at it.

Loch Ness Revenge

by Hunter Shea

32861019

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

 My Review

I’ve watched a lot of movies and read a lot of books about the Loch Ness Monster and couldn’t wait to see how Hunter spun this legend.

Your thrown right into the thick of things from the first chapter. Poor twins, Austin and Natalie, witness the horrific attack and death of their parents by a creature risen from the depths of Loch Ness. Some twenty years later the twins set out to destroy the creature. Little do they know it’s not just one beast that swims the depths, waiting for hapless victims to feed upon. The legend is real. It wants revenge. And it has the numbers to tip the scale in its favor.

I love the water. I love the smell, the sound of the waves lapping at the shore, the feel of weightlessness while swimming. What I don’t love is what lives in it. The slimy weeds that brush against your body. The darting shadows that you can’t quite make out. The things that shift under the sand when you step on it. It all creeps me out. And that was before I watched Jaws. I no longer swim in the ocean or lakes. I have a pool.

This story has tons of atmosphere and great visual writing. I’ve never been to the Loch, but I could easily see it. And I could imagine the ripples on it’s surface as something large swims below.

And as per the norm, the author doesn’t spare any of his characters. This worried me since I became quite fond of a few of them, so don’t get too attached. It is a monster story after all. Many will become bloody bits of chum.

I knew Hunter would give us a Nessie like no other. I’d love to see this as a movie. To see what the author describes.

Make sure to give yourself plenty of time before you starting reading this book. Hunter wastes little time getting to the meat of his story. It’s all out mayhem once it begins and a bumpy ride to the end.

The Dover Demon

by Hunter Shea

25878531

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

 My Review

Hunter Shea writes stories I can sink my teeth into. What’s more fun than getting scared, jumping at little noises, and after finishing one of his books, sleeping with the light on.

The author takes an urban legend and brings it to life. The Dover Demon is a big attraction in Dover, much to the annoyance to some and the delight to others. There’s money to be made from tourists flocking in to try to catch a glimpse of the elusive creature.

Back in 1977, an encounter with a strange creature changes several lives. In present time, a snow storm blows in, and once again the Dover Demon is on the prowl, taking victims. For what purpose? We can’t begin to imagine.

I’m not sure when it started, but this story started to give me the creeps. I felt unsettled, on edge. When a story can creep up on me and make me uncomfortable while reading it, there’s no way I can stop reading until I finish it. Even if that means continuing into the wee hours when it’s dark and every little noise seems magnified.

Once the storm blew in and the characters faced the demons again, it got kind of gory. Since it’s mentioned in the blurb I feel I’m not spoiling anything when I talk about the tunnels under Dover. What happened down there gave me a sense of vertigo. It was dizzying and relentless. The demons had a purpose and they weren’t cute little alien looking things.

What does this creature look like? Take a close look at the cover. Then imagine being in the dark and coming face to face with it. Is it a mutated animal? An alien? A government experiment gone horribly wrong? It could be any of those things.

Like urban legends? Like to be creeped out? Then you should read this book.

33145741  The Night of the Beasts by [Brown, Eric S. ]

Welcome to Freakin Fridays, where I share my reviews of books that scare you, thrill you, and get those endorphins pumping.

Today I’m back with two more stories about the big hairy dude, Sasquatch. These aren’t about the warm and cuddly ones either.

 Boggy Creek

The Legend Is True

by Eric S. Brown and Jennifer Minar-Jaynes

33145741

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve watched a lot of horror movies about Sasquatch. Read a bunch of books too. So I was rubbing my greedy little hands together when I got this book. I knew it was going to be creepy fun. I watched The Legend Of Boggy Creek recently. Funny that I remember it differently now then when I watched it all those years ago. It still has a chilling atmosphere. And I think this would be a good movie too.

The characters do everything wrong, even the ones who know what’s out in them woods. Sitting ducks, I tell ya. You have the the young adults, spending time in a cabin in the big old woods. There’s the creepy neighbor who drops ominous remarks about what might be out there in them woods. And then there’s the police officer who knows what’s out there and goes after it anyway.

Got the picture. Good. Everything goes to hell in a hand basket in no time. People are killed, there bodies mutilated or eaten. The big hairy dude is pissed off and hungry and the puny humans don’t stand a chance. I think you’d better bring a tank to take him down.

Some may not agree with my 4 star rating, so let me explain. I went into this story for some campy fun and lots of gore. I had no expectations of a deep, thoughtful story. So, I got just what I wanted. Ate it up and wished it was longer.

The Night of the Beasts by [Brown, Eric S. ]

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve got several of Eric’s Bigfoot War books to read and when I spotted this little freebie, I grabbed it to see what I might be in for.

The hairy ones with the big feet come calling. Yep, there’s a slew of them and they tear through a town, maiming and killing everyone unfortunate enough to be there.

A security guard’s routine night duty at a hospital becomes more than he could ever have imagined as ambulances race to the emergency room, loaded with people horribly maimed. Reports are flooding in about a big animal, loose in the town, attacking anything that moves. But with so many injured, it can’t be just one, can it?

It’s no words wasted and complete chaos in these few pages. If you like em fast and furious with cryptids on the rampage, this could be one for you. Just keep in mind it’s a tiny story that comes from the world of Bigfoot War.

Monster

by Frank Peretti

1426200

Genre: Horror / Christian Thriller

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve enjoyed other books by this author and couldn’t resist this one. It’s different from his other Christian thriller novels and takes a swing at the Sasquatch legend.

This is a Sasquatch story with a twist. Reed drags his wife, Beck, along on a weekend survival trek. It quickly turns into a nightmare when a huge animal comes out and takes Beth. As search parties organize and enter the wilderness in search of Beth, something else is out there, hunting them down, along with the creature that took her.

The twist for me was reading about what happened with Beth. She has to survive her abduction. And it’s scary and sometimes funny what she has to contend with. Sasquatch is in no way human. A large predator with plenty of attitude, the family dynamics for them is tumultuous and violent. Talk about dysfunctional.  And Beth has to fight for her place in order to stay alive long enough to be rescued.

There’s a strong sense of urgency as you get into the story. And for such a large book, I was surprised how quickly I finished it. Grab the book, remember this is fiction, and just enjoy the ride. It’s well worth a go.

I’m still crossing my fingers that this will be made into a movie. It would be such an adventure.

Synopsis

Reed Shelton organized this survival weekend. Hired the best guide in the region. Meticulously trained, studied, and packed while encouraging his wife, Beck, to do the same. But little did they know that surviving the elements would become the least of their worries.

During their first night of camping, an unearthly wail pierces the calm of the forest. Then someone – no, something – emerges from the dense woods and begins pursuing them. Everything that follows is a blur to Reed – except for the unforgettable image of a huge creature carrying his wife into the darkness.

Dependent on the efforts of a small town and a band of friends, Reed knows they have little time to find Beck. Even more important, he soon realizes that they aren’t the only ones doing the hunting. Something much faster, more relentless – and definitely not human – has begun to hunt them.

Leviathan

by James Byron Huggins

1496682

Genre: Science Fiction / Horror / Spiritualism

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I can’t quite pin down the genre for this. I notice it’s been tagged as science fiction, which I agree with that. But I feel it’s also a horror and spiritualism genre too.

There’s the beast. What a beast it is too. It started out as a benign creature. Then the idiots alter it genetically, hoping to use it as a weapon. I swear, no matter how many times I come across this plot, it just never gets old for me.

Imagine a harmless creature turned into something that looks like a dragon. Then make it impossible to kill and program it’s brain like a computer. Then imagine it getting a mind of it’s own and a raging desire to kill and burn.

Thor is a mysterious viking, a giant of a man living an isolated life in an ancient tower on the harsh and frozen Grimwald Island, his only companion his valiant steed, Tanngrisner. Until the men come. He’s a gentle giant and quickly comes to care for these men and their families, as they do him.

When the beast escapes his confinement under the ice, they must keep it from reaching the surface, for there will be no stopping it’s bloody revenge then.

What really drove this story for me was the character’s. The author really outdid himself in bringing them to life. Even some that are only briefly mentioned are easily imagined. I felt bad that they were hired to do an innocuous job, little knowing the terrible secrets being performed behind blast proof doors deep in the caverns below.

And I adored Thor. He’s an epic warrior and the best of heroes. His friendship with Connor and his wife and daughter is strong, forged with love and loyalty. The power of the bond between Thor and Connor is another favorite part of this book.

Take a bunch of people, good and bad, and isolate them somewhere with the harshest of elements, and then unleash holy hell on them. This is the best of scenarios for me and I loved everything about this book. I’ve reread this several times and will do so again. Can’t recommend it enough.

Read on if you want to know more.

I was still reading this when I prepared my draft post, but since I finished it before publishing this, I figured I’d add my review. I hope you don’t mind.

My Review

I loved this one. I’m a huge fan of horror and especially ones featuring monsters of the deep.

The author gives us the Megalodon, a giant prehistoric cousin of the Great White shark.  I watch Shark Week and tons of documentaries about sharks. This isn’t a made up creature. It really existed a long time ago. Some believe it still does, deep in the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of the ocean. I may be skeptical about that as subs have visited the bottom and come up with no evidence. But, you never know, and that makes for some good fiction.

This is horror so I knew better than to get attached to the characters, but I couldn’t help myself. They were so genuine, and even the ones with small cameos had a lasting impact.

As for the monster of the deep. It’s huge, it’s hungry, and it’s almost supernaturally cunning.

One scene where the meg periscopes to pick off it’s victim from a beaver dam was horrifying. The author’s writing put me there, a witness to the carnage.

The suspense was intense. My mind kept jumping ahead, thinking about what might happen to who and where the beast would strike next. What made it feel real was that the author didn’t always let the shark get its intended victim. And sometimes, when you anticipated the creatures attack, it didn’t come. At least not when and where you thought it would.

Great writing, a terrifying plot, and genuine characters had me rubbing my hands together in fiendish glee.

A quick note. I never found a movie based upon this book, as is mentioned on the cover. With today’s CG and technology, what a terrifying movie it could be.
