Then why. I wanted to ask, do I sometimes feel like I don’t know you at all, now that we’re finally in the same room?

Synopsis

When a 14-year-old runs away, her parents turn to social media to find her-launching a public campaign that will expose their darkest secrets and change their family forever, in this suspenseful and gripping debut for fans of Reconstructing Amelia and Gone Girl

Don’t try to find me. Though the message on the kitchen white board is written in Marley’s hand, her mother Rachel knows there has to be some other explanation. Marley would never run away.

As the days pass and it sinks in that the impossible has occurred, Rachel and her husband Paul are informed that the police have “limited resources.” If they want their 14-year-old daughter back, they will have to find her themselves. Desperation becomes determination when Paul turns to Facebook and Twitter, and launches FindMarley.com.

But Marley isn’t the only one with secrets.

With public exposure comes scrutiny, and when Rachel blows a television interview, the dirty speculation begins. Now, the blogosphere is convinced Rachel is hiding something. It’s not what they think; Rachel would never hurt Marley. Not intentionally, anyway. But when it’s discovered that she’s lied, even to the police, the devoted mother becomes a suspect in Marley’s disappearance.

Is Marley out there somewhere, watching it all happen, or is the truth something far worse?

Missing Planets cover

BLURB:

Planet Terato has become a member of the assembly of the Confederated League of Allied Star Systems. The Murian Outpost Terato once commanded by His Imperial Majesty’s Lord High Chamberlain Herklo Korvo XXXIV is now Teratoan staffed and under the command of Teratoan Eklam a’Qoc.

From the uncharted reaches between galaxies, attacks of extraordinary weaponry come against Terato and the Myr worlds of the Murians. Terminus Terato’s expanded link-portals and converter power modules are virtually useless. Power loss, defenses, communications and travel are totally disrupted. High Chamberlain Korvo’s unexpected return to Terminus on a mission for His Imperial Majesty leaves him stranded on Terato. Attacks grow more massive, more unpredictable; spread across the worlds of the League, as an isolated Terminus struggles among the shattered rubble and whispering remains of an ancient Polity of star-walkers.

Family and friends are lost, empires and civilizations in disarray, Terminus and Planet Terato almost defenseless. Desperate for answers, their worlds being overwhelmed by this remorseless aggressor, Eklam and Korvo reach across unexplored space in a despairing gamble and the last reserves of converter star-substrate, seeking one insignificant star system of gas giants and rocky inner planets for possible relics of the elusive Lantaraan Polity.

Excerpt

Ek never forgot the time Klara peeked over his shoulder; clutched his arm, “It was promised The Old Ones would return.”

“They don’t look like what I thought the Old Ones would look like,” he’d whispered to her. “Suppose they’re not the Old Ones. Where’d they come from? What are they?” Questions Ek had, with no idea there would be other times he’d ask the same kinds of questions—but with far more serious inferences.

The word spread. Many believed these off-worlders were the promised return of their ancients. As time passed, between chores and extra homework for his special classes there hadn’t been much chance to slip away; take the curved path to his overlook spot. Yet, when he did, boundless questions grew as Ek watched in the dusklit the off-worlders create what would become Outpost Terato.

His uncle was unbending, “Neither you nor Klara are to go anywhere near that abomination these off-worlders build out of the air,” his disapproval more severe with each passing dawnlit.

About the Book:

Hearts Beneath the Badge 2

Title: Hearts Beneath the Badge
Author: Karen Solomon
Publisher: Missing Niche Publishing
Pages: 247
Genre: Nonfiction
Format: Hardcover/Paperback/Kindle/Nook

Hearts Beneath the Badge is a unique compilation of interviews with officers across the country. It’s not about the crimes they witness or the judgment they face; it’s about them – Damien, Danny, Frances, Ken, Pamela, Brian, and more. Their thoughts, their fears, their proud moments and their heartbreak. It’s about the people we often don’t see because we are blinded by the uniform.

They are among the hundreds of thousands that are unseen each day, the men and women that go back for more no matter the personal cost. They provide meals, rides, lifesaving breaths and prosthetic legs. Yes, even prosthetic legs. There is much more to them than meets the eye-or the news camera. By reading this book, you will open yourself to a world of people you may have forgotten existed. You will see the names, families and some of the faces of the police officers that don’t make the news.

Hearts Beneath the Badge is a book about the good deeds officers perform. There is a pressing need for people to see more than just the officer’s hearts; they need to see their souls. Society as a whole needs to accept police officers for who they are – mere mortals. In order to do that, they must look through the layers of the officer’s lives and see the heartache and joy, the same heartaches and joy we all experience. Society also needs to know that, whether we want to admit it or not, there is a price to be paid for pursing the love of the law.

90% of all sales will be donated to National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, Safe Call Now, Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) and PoliceWives.

Hearts Beneath the Badge 3

Book Excerpt:

A man named Jim was well known to the local police, he had called the police and people had called the police on him. Jim, the son of a Christian missionary, was a Sudanese refugee who lost his right leg, and his father, to violence in Sudan. After nine years in a refugee camp, he made his way to America. Unfortunately, immigrating to America was not as easy as he thought it would be.

Jim stood out in a crowd. At 6’6,” missing a leg and his face covered in tribal markings, he was hard to miss. He didn’t understand American culture and spoke broken English. People immediately began to take advantage of him, and he was a regular victim of assault and theft. When he wasn’t the victim, he was the perpetrator. Sometimes he drank too much and became disorderly in public.

In an area where crime is as high as it was in Over the Rhine in 2001, Jim was quickly becoming another face in the crowd. Officers didn’t always have time to talk to the people on their route. They were too busy moving from call to call. Luck was on its way to Jim in the form of Sergeant Brian Ibold. A chance meeting between Brian and Jim would change Jim’s life forever.

In addition to delivering pizza, whenever the opportunity arose Brian would spend time talking to the people on his route to find out what was going on. He offered them a sliver of humanity on a dark night during a dark time in their lives. One night, Jim approached Brian’s patrol car and Brian asked, “What can I do for you?”

Jim’s answer was simple, “I’m hungry, brother. Can you just give me some food?”

That night, Brian brought Jim some McDonald’s to get him through. The next day he brought Jim a feast of canned goods – tuna, vegetables, ramen noodles and other non-perishable delicacies. Brian and Jim sealed their friendship over dinner, and the two began an unlikely association which soon included two other men.

Author Karen Solomon

Karen Solomon

Karen Solomon is interested in the feelings of law enforcement and whether or not they have someone that will listen to them, most of them do not. Most books on the market are written by the police officers themselves, in almost textbook fashion relating protocol and situations with the orderliness of a police report. Her books are different from every book out there because the officers bare themselves to her; many of the interviews end in tears because they have opened up something that is very difficult to close. Karen Solomon is a graduate of Eckerd College and blogs as The Missing Niche. Her writing has been featured on PoliceMag.com and To Write Love on Her Arms. She lives in New England with her husband, 2 children and 2 dogs. Proceeds of her latest book, Hearts Beneath the Badge, will be donated to law enforcement charities.

Anzard

My Review

I definitely felt like I might have fell down the rabbit hole or spun over the rainbow while reading Anzard. As Justin, along with his Tribe of Truth and Poofy, follows The Path of Possibilities, so will your children, learning to listen to and develop their own inner voices and instincts.

Justin is a normal ten year old boy about to go on the adventure of a lifetime. When his parent’s plane is lost in a storm, Justin prays for their safety, and his prayers are answered.

The mysterious world of Spiritainia has heard Justin and sent an anzard, Poofy, to help him. An anzard is a mix of angel and wizard and are tiny like a pixie.

Thus begins a magical adventure into a fantastical world filled with amazing creatures and characters. Not all are good though.

There are bad people in Possibility. The evil witch, Nosefeen, along with her wimpy husband and misfit sons, Dud and Crud, set trap after trap, trying to stop Justin and his new friends. They don’t want Justin to find himself. They don’t want Goodness.

As Justin faces each obstacle, he learns from his friends, starts to listen to and trust his own inner voice and make his own decisions. He’s on the right path to self discovery. To finding out who he’s supposed to be. This will help him find his parents and return him home.

Anzard is a treasure. A magical, supernatural adventure with characters you’ll love and loathe.

The Tribe of Truth, which consists of Regal the eagle, Billy the goat,  Chumpah the chipmunk, and Turner  the turtle, are each there for a different purpose. And Poofy is playful yet wise. She’s a bit of a rebel.

Nosefeen reminded me of the wicked witch in The Wizard of Oz, except she wasn’t as clever. Her husband is a bumbling fool and her nasty brats, Crud and Dud, aren’t much help either. Talk about a dysfunctional family.

These are just some of the characters you’ll meet on the Path of Possibilities.

How I wished I still had young ones to read this to. When I reached the end, there was this sweet, magical moment, so poignant. It made me smile, made my heart feel lighter, younger, if only for a while.

Description

Author Christopher Conroy has just released a book for kids aged 8-12 called ANZARD. Teachers, parents, producers…take note! This appealing and well-written book would give Lewis Carroll (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) reason to worry. As a matter of fact if you mixed in one part Harry Potter, with one part Pinocchio then added a generous helping of Alice in Wonderland…you’d get Anzard!

ANZARD tells the story of how a young boy named Justin Cavell learns to listen to that voice inside him and trust his instincts. He also learns how his dreams and wishes can come true: Justin becomes more aware of himself and his potential to turn his dreams and wishes into reality.

One dark and stormy night, as Justin is anxiously awaiting the return of his parents and praying for their safe return from a long overdue plane trip, he is visited by Poofy, a tiny, magical pixie who comes from the faraway planet, Spiritainia. Justin is escorted to this wonderful world of Spiritainia by the Anzard pixie, Poofy. Aside from Poofy, Justin is joined by his own Tribe of Truth – that include such memorable characters as Regal the Eagle, Turner the Turtle, Chumpah the Chipmunk and Billy the Goat – define Justin’s inner voice and help him in his quest of self-discovery.

Justin also learns to resolve conflict, which arrives in the form of an evil witch named Nosefeen, and captures Poofy as Poofy is guiding Justin to the Path of Possibilities. Through these adventures, Justin grows stronger and develops self-esteem, enabling him to return to Earth, find his parents, and guide them home safely.

ANZARD opens up a world of rewards for kids who learn to develop and trust their inner voice. The book helps them to become more aware and enlightened.

The ANZARD book cover is beautifully illustrated by Peter Green Design of Glendale, California who also designs for film companies, sporting teams and many other businesses including DreamWorks, McDonald’s, The Walt Disney Company, LEGOLAND, The NBA, HBO, FOX Kids Networks, and the “Game of Thrones” fantasy drama television series, to name a few.

“A timeless, yet very modern story of a young boy’s journey to a magical new world, filled with enchanting characters and thrilling adventure. You owe yourself a trip to Spiritania.”

            –           Victoria Lucas, Producer

“My nephew loved ANZARD so much I had to see what got him so excited. After the first chapter I was hooked. I normally don’t read this kind of fiction (fantasy) but the storyline was compelling enough to make me locate the author’s website and post this review.

Can’t wait to read Mr. Conroy’s next novel!”

            –           D. Butler, Amazon Post

Justin’s story can even appeal to adults. Says Mr. Conroy, “I want my readers to come away happier, more aware and enlightened…as a child I was aware of many things but I constantly invalidated that awareness. I shouldn’t have. Those gifts are precious. Our inner awareness should be nurtured and cultivated, especially by parents and the child who has those gifts. Maybe some part of Anzard will awaken those powers.”

Book Excerpt:

On a dark, stormy night a ten year-old boy named Justin Cavelle looked out of his upstairs bedroom window and prayed for the safe return of his missing parents.

Justin had just heard from his grandfather that his mother, a nurse, and his father, a doctor, were hours and hours overdue from a mission to help poor people in a fishing village hundreds of miles away.

At that moment, off in the distance, a treacherous, turbulent thunderstorm was tossing a small, red, single-engine Cessna plane around violently over the dense forest and cliffs below.

Inside that battered plane, the pilot, Justin’s father, Dr. Stephan Cavell, strained to see out of the rain-lashed windshield as he desperately tried to guide the plane through the mountainous terrain and narrow canyons below.

Beside Dr. Cavelle, his terrified wife, Noel, clutched her husband’s arm in fear as they bounced through the endless turbulence of the storm.

As lightning struck a nearby tree, Dr. Cavell noticed that the plane’s altimeter indicated they were going lower and lower.

As his wife screamed, Dr. Cavell desperately attempted to pull out of the plane’s nosedive. Without warning, their plane smashed into the tops of rising pine trees, sending them toward the steep cliffs of the narrow canyon. With a loud crash, the plane spun round and round until it finally was thrust into a nearby cave.

Inside the cave, the bruised and bloodied Dr. Cavelle and his wife lay unconscious in their damaged plane, which was wedged against the walls of the cave. A large boulder blocked one of the airplane’s doors, and the cave wall blocked the other. It was clear Justin’s parents were trapped and badly injured.

Farther down in the cave, a hibernating bear lay sound asleep, unaware and easy meal was nearby.

Miles away from that cave, a worried Justin rushed downstairs to be with his grandparents Ned and Bess.

Grandpa Ned was a husky man with silver-gray hair, dark green eyes and leathered skin. He had worked all his life running a lumber company, and that world seemed still etched in his face. Somehow, being the man in charge, working outdoors, and never backing down from anyone had given him the look of someone who lived all his life exactly how he wanted and loved every minute of it.

Grandpa wore a bright blue-and-red plaid shirt, over-alls and work boots. He always wore plaid shirts. Justin used to always wonder if he was born in a plaid shirt.

As Justin and Grandpa Ned looked out over the stormy night, Grandpa assured Justin that his mom and dad were all right and would be flying over the treetops soon.

In the background, Justin’s grandmother was in her favorite chair reading a book with a concerned expression on her face.

Grandma Bess was a quiet, slender woman who glowed with inner strength and awareness about her, as if she had special knowledge all to herself … she always seemed to know more than she said.

She noticed Justin when he bounced downstairs and into the living room all in a tizzy, and as usual, she took a moment to admire her grandson. What a young, lanky pony she thought.

Justin was an energetic, affectionate young boy who seemed to have a never-ending curiosity about things — a lot like his cat. Justin’s thick brown hair was always flopping over his dark blue eyes, and his skinny legs always seemed to be chasing his endless imagination — making him trip over himself sometimes.

Justin’s grandfather continued to look out the window at the foreboding storm and the dark clouds in the distance.

“Don’t worry son, they’ll make it. Your father has flown through many storms before, you know,” he said.

“You sure, Grandpa?” Justin asked.

Justin’s grandfather just smiled and patted his grandson on the head. “I’m sure boy,” he answered, “I’m sure.”

Little did Justin, or his grandfather, know how that storm would affect them both — and all the magical places it would eventually cause Justin to travel to in this Universe.

The Bleikovat Event

The Cairns of Sainctuarie

by Hawk MacKinney

Bleik BookCover_TheBleikovatEvent

BLURB

Among the close-kin clans of western rural Malfesian Murians, farming and gelf ranches are long held traditions. Times are good…full barns, fat gelf calves and large families thrive among the sprawling grain fields and hamlets and the river from which they derive their name—the Feldon. Word comes with the trade caravans that times are not so good in the regions far to the east of the Feldon River: tumultuous changes stir among the remote province of Bleikovia. Old timer Feldovats shrug it off as one more squabble between clans over boundaries or water rights…too distant to affect the Feldovats

The western clans learn too late, however, it is no local squabble. Outnumbered and unprepared, Feldovats resist a hoard bent on plunder and conquest. Days of battle along the Feldon River stain the riverbanks in green Murian blood. In the finals days of exhausted fighting, Judikar Klarvko Celo, leader of the Clan Klarvkon and the Feldovats, is fatally stabbed with the slow-acting sevon poison. The Judikar’s consort, Etikaa Klarvkaa, becomes Regentkaa, and with Celovat Field Commander Korvo Celo serving as her advisor, she leads the demoralized Feldovat survivors on a gruesome ill-prepared winter trek through high mountain passes of ice and blizzard snow in an attempt to elude the Green Dragon forces of the Bleikovats.

Etkaa’s only son, Klarvko Celo II, helps spirit Feldovat young across a remote mountain exodus to the west toward Eedov Province. The battered, starving Feldovats reach the Malfesian coast at Eedov City only to be confronted with their implacable enemy determined to destroy the remaining Klarvkon rabble. Taking passage on crowded lumbering Maalonovion freighters, Feldovats and Malfesian refugees set sail. On arrival in Maalon City they are welcomed among their Maalon hosts, and settle into a new life.

But famine and a pandemic pestilence stir old hates and nurse former ambitions. The enraged Overseers of Bleikovia move against the Klarvkons, this time bringing bloodshed to Maalonovia. The exiles from the Feldon must fight once again, but starvation and plague across the Planete Myr make it a different war from the battles along the Feldon…a na’ä blikovat…the Bleikovvat Phenomenon…an event with unexpected consequences and outcomes none could have foreseen.

Before the vendetta killing is exhausted, the Regentkaa Klarvkaa and her son are swept onto the Maalon throne, setting the Klarvkon Dynasty and the Murians toward an intergalactic golden age, and a star-flung destiny the once-agrarian Feldovats could never have envisaged.

The catafalque of the old Dowager Queen rested on the high rostrum of the Temple of the Goddess Myraa. There was little ceremony to the cremation of dead. Yet, all that had passed made this requiem for the Dowager Queen Klarvkaa Etkaa Bremanova Celovaa Bremanova a symbol of the changes which had swept so many lives. Long annuals before the ascendancy of The Klarvkon Dynasty, the massive wood and granite Temple to the Goddess Myraa had been destroyed in the firestorm which laid waste Eedov City. After the close of the Malfesian War the temple was rebuilt, but not the city. On the ashes of the old temple, immense columns rose above the sanctuary and vaults. Iridescent alabaster and polished marble greeted pilgrim supplicants who had come to the shoreline plains washed by the Green Sea.

Dowager Etkaa Klarvkaa—wife, myäat, founding matriarch of the Klarvkon Dynasty—gave hope from a time without hope. As was her wish, she would be cremated on the soil of her birth, her ashes to mingle with those of her consort, Klarvko Celo. Their son, His Imperial Majesty Klarvko Celo the Second, decreed it would be done. At the enormous base of the great temple in a spectacular vision never seen before and seldom since came an undulating ocean of banners. Some of them clans which no longer existed, even the once-hated Green Dragon of Bleikovia. Murians had taken her to their hearts and never relinquished her. Even in death, her shadow would reach across the centuries, and measure all who followed.

Excerpt

Present Day: Dorset, England

Excitement being a kindred spirit to fear, Toni was undecided as to whether it was a trickle of fear she felt shivering down her spine or a trickle of excitement.

As she sat staring at the screen of her laptop, the darkness shrouding the room seemed to draw in on her: her head swam, her palms became clammy. Tears welled up in her eyes. She blinked them away, hoping that by doing so the message on her screen would disappear. It didn’t.

Peter Monroe wants to be friends on Facebook.

Hesitantly she maneuvered the cursor over the ‘connect’ button and pressed ‘enter.’ The screen mutated to show the Facebook page for ‘Peter Monroe.’ It was Peter! She recognized the profile photograph instantly. She’d taken it. She remembered posing him in front of the bandstand in Gorki Park on that spring day back in 1990, remembered laughing at the stupid faces he pulled, remembered the way his long chestnut hair flopped over his forehead, remembered…

How could she forget? He had been her one true love.

Love. A word made empty by misuse…by overuse. She wondered how many had ever endured the touch of real love, that soul-eviscerating sensation that comes when you know you have found your soul-mate. Very few, she decided. Perhaps this was all for the good: true love brought anguish in equal measure to joy. As the last twenty years had taught her, finding true love was a bitter-sweet blessing. Her fingers trembled as she typed.

Is it really you, Peter?

The reply was instantaneous.

Yes…I’ve missed you, Tonia.

She couldn’t stop herself: the tears flowed down her cheeks.

But…

She paused, terrified that what she would type next might cause this marvelous mirage to vanish.

But I thought you were dead.

The seconds ticked by, then:

I am.

Loss Angeles 2

Set in the glamorous city of Los Angeles, California, LOSS ANGELES skips the shine and celebrity the city is known for and instead dives deeply into the lives of ordinary Angelenos. In each of the fifteen stories in this collection, author Mathieu Cailler examines the private lives of a diverse mix of characters. This collection of stories showcases the rawness of real life, the complexity of navigating personal challenges and internal conflicts, and the ever present possibility of encountering unexpected compassion and empathy.

The stories in LOSS ANGELES uncover the reality that the interiors of people’s lives often have huge holes in them. In the collection, a quiet divorced man, who is still deeply in love with his ex-wife, finally speaks up when his son’s soon-to-be stepfather becomes enraged over a broken birthday gift. A young man visiting his parents for the first time in nine years delays his presence at his family’s Thanksgiving dinner to see an old friend who was influential in his early life. Cailler also goes beyond loss and grief to reveal hidden human kindness in the stories of a widower, who steps out of his melancholy to save the life of a stranger, and an aging bachelor, who becomes a father figure for a wayward young woman.

In “Over the Bridge,” Ella is a teenager learning to manage her grief over the death of her mother and the new life she and her seven-year-old brother have with their father, with whom the children have not lived with since their parents’ divorce. While Ella is receiving weekly counseling at school, she continues to struggle with the changes in her life. When the counselor instructs Ella to write a letter to her father explaining the uncertainty and distance she feels in regard to her relationship with him, Ella complies and writes with the type of honesty that one allows when there is no plan to share what is written. But when Ella finds herself in a frightening situation with a boy at a party after consuming drugs and alcohol, the letter becomes the catalyst for a change in perspective for her father.

“Hit and Stay” is the story of a young married man making the long drive home from an out-of-town business trip. Penn is troubled as he drives his SUV through back roads to avoid the highway traffic. The quiet drive in the warm cocoon of the truck affords Penn the opportunity to reflect on the one-night stand he had with a new employee. As he contemplates how or if he will confess his mistake to his wife, Kimberly, Penn reviews his life with the woman he was once passionately in love with who has grown distant since the death of her mother. During the drive, Penn has an unfortunate accident that breaks the delicate hold he has on his volatile emotional state.

The conflict between familial violence and love is the foundation of “Dark Timber.” Clevie and his older brother, Roy, reluctantly accompany their father on a hunting expedition. Their father, an alcoholic recently released from prison after serving time for beating the boys’ mother, is determined to teach his sons how to hunt for their own food.

The relationship between father and sons is strained. Roy has personal experience with his father’s violent temper, but young Clevie remains hopeful that life with their father will improve. Neither boy is interested in hunting. Clevie is the most reluctant to fire on innocent animals. However, when their father comes face-to-face with a menacing predator, both boys instinctively respond to his pleas for help.

LOSS ANGELES is a throwback to eclectic short story collections of past years and is only bound by the theme of loss in a very general sense,” Cailler says. “The stories are by turns fragile, tender, and always memorable. The characters in this book are as diverse as the city itself… they all have a story to share, and it was my job to do just that. I don’t believe in being predestined while writing; therefore, some of the stories end with a bit of hope while others reach their coda in a disconcerting fashion.”

Exposing emotions was Cailler’s focus when writing the collection. “I want the reader to relate to the feelings and sentiments expressed in the book. I think loss is the greatest bond we possess as humans, and there isn’t a single person around who hasn’t experienced it. We’ve all lost something dear to us, something profound,” the author says. “I think if a reader comes away from LOSS ANGELES feeling more connected to others and/or him or herself, I’ll have done my job. Whenever I write, I think of Plato’s words: ‘Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.’ That’s something that I hope will resonate with the reader.”

Book Excerpt:

Penn continued to drive through the night. Snow and gales of wind assailed his SUV as he barreled towards home, his foot steady on the gas, his hands positioned firmly at ten and two. Heat billowed from the vents on the dashboard and moved loose strands of hair on his face. He didn’t want to replay the scenario—the quiet L.A. hotel room, the closed drapes, the underwear on the floor, the moaning, the taste of her lips—but the SUV’s quiet cabin was a hotbed for reflection.

His headlights brushed a green highway sign, indicating that there were eighty-nine miles left on his journey home to Lake Tahoe. With the winter weather, it might take Penn more than two hours, but that was all right. How would he look at Kimberly after what he’d done?

“Don’t marry young,” people had told him a few years ago when he’d passed around the idea of proposing. “You haven’t tested the waters.” Cliché after cliché came at him, and while the marriage advice was stale and up there with “enjoy each day like it’s your last” and “don’t let anyone tell you something’s impossible,” it wasn’t amiss.

Becky had been with the company for a couple months now; there’d been some mild flirting, but Penn just thought that was the way she was, and he flirted back from time to time, knowing that it was just a game. Becky saw the wedding band on his finger; she could put two and two together.

But on this recent trip, Penn and Becky had found themselves at the hotel bar, overlooking the glimmering L.A skyline. There was a meeting early in the morning, and most of the company’s employees had gone to bed. She approached Penn and slid onto the chair next to his. They drank, and their eyes held one another in the empty bar. The piano man played his versions of “So What” and “Stardust,” songs that made people more attractive and made conversations more interesting. The right strap of Becky’s blue dress kept slipping off her freckled shoulder, and she left her smooth skin exposed longer than normal before bringing the strap back up. Her breasts were pressed up and together, and when she crossed her legs, one of her black heels dangled a few inches from her foot, making it seem as though she was already undressing. Penn remembered the way she reached over and touched his right hand.

The worst part was that Penn had only slept with Becky because of the confidence Kimberly had given him. Many times she’d reaffirmed his self-esteem, telling him he was worthy of love, that he was better-looking than he imagined, and that he deserved the best.

Penn believed the burden would be lightened if he told Kimberly, but at the same time, he thought the words might destroy her, and that’s not what he wanted. It’d taken cheating for him to know how much he loved her, but who would believe a line like that?

The tapping of a snare drum leaked out from the speakers, accompanied by the beat of an upright bass and the trill of a clarinet. He lowered the window and let the cold air flow into the sweltering cabin.

Was there a perfect scenario? Penn thought. He let his mind wander. When he got home maybe Kimberly would be crying.

What’s wrong? Penn would say.

I did something terrible, Kimberly would answer.

Kimberly would go on to tell Penn that she’d slept with someone else, that she was sorry, and that it didn’t mean anything. After that, he’d say the same thing. Two wrongs, one right. But even thinking about her sleeping with someone else made him sick. That wasn’t at all what he wanted.

High school sweethearts turned lovers turned husband and wife turned roommates—that’s what they were. Penn found it more and more difficult to make her laugh. Where there’d been kisses, there were now smiles. Where there’d been heat, there was now platitude. Where there’d been love, there was now familiarity.

My 56 for this week is from

Dying For The Past

Gumshoe Ghost Mystery #2

by TJ O’Connor

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My 56

What bothered me the most was that despite all of my neat spirit-tricks and snappy detective skills, I had no idea what was going on.

~~~
Synopsis
Dying is not for the faint of heart . . . . . . Neither is the murder of a mysterious philanthropist with ties to the Russian mob and 1939 gangsters.
At an A-list charity ball organized by his wife, Angela, former detective Oliver “Tuck” Tucker is doing his best to prove that ghosts know how to have a good time–until a man is murdered in cold blood on the dance floor.
Never one to let a mystery go unsolved, Tuck is on the case with help from Angela and his former police-detective partners. Together, they must be the first to read “the book”–deceased gangster Vincent Calabrese’s journal that names names and reveals the dirty secrets of several modern-day spies.
As Tuck learns the book’s secrets, he begins to unravel his own family’s wayward past, leading to the question–is being a ghost hereditary? Even while chasing a killer, the biggest challenge Tuck must conquer is how to be back amongst the living . . . but not one of them.
~~~

I’m not going to be reviewing this until June but I don’t think I can wait much longer to start reading it.

A detective who’s a ghost. Sounds fun.

And while I was getting my 56 quote, I ran into plenty of characters and they have such fun names.

Looks like it’s going to be very good.

BLURB:

… it was about the land…a tale of love and loss and hope…

“The most engaging and brilliantly crafted historical work since Margaret Mitchell’s great

classic.”

Barbara Casey

Author, The Gospel According to Prissy

Hamilton Ingram looked out across the fertile Georgia bottomlands that were Moccasin Hollows,

seeing holdings it had taken generations of Ingrams to build. No drop of slave sweat ever shed

in its creation. It was about the land…his trust, his duty to preserve it for the generation of

Ingrams to come…

It is July of 1859, a month of sweltering dog days and feverish emotional bombast. Life is good

for widower Rundell Ingram and his Hazel-eyed, roan-haired son, Hamilton. Between the two of

them, they take care of Moccasin Hollows, their rustic dogtrot ancestral home, a sprawling non-
slave plantation in the rolling farming country outside Queensborough Towne in east Georgia.

Adjoining Ingram lands is Wisteria Bend, the vast slave-holding plantation of Andrew and

Corinthia Greer, their daughter Sarah, and son Benjamin.

Both families share generations of long-accepted traditions, and childhood playmates are no

longer children. The rangy, even-tempered Norman-Scottish young Hamilton is smitten with

Sarah, who has become an enticing capricious beauty—the young lovers more in love with each

passing day, and only pleasant times ahead of them.

But a blood tide of war is sweeping across the South, a tide that might be impossible to stand

before.

Enjoy this glimpse inside the book

The Captain lowered his brass spyglass. “My apologies for having to disturb you,” he said to

Hamilton. With full steam and sail for now we have speed on their lead ship. They’ll try to angle

us off from the inlet this side of Santa Rosa, but I mean to give ’em no chance of that. Too

shallow in there for them to clear the reef. Once we get lee to the shoals…” he raised his glass.

“Lead frigate is gaining.” He shook his head. “First time we’ve picked up anything this close

in.”

Sarah walked to the bridge railing and fixed her eyes toward the tall white sails of the onrushing

juggernaut. Her father’s enemy, Hamilton’s enemy, her enemy; until this moment the battles

had been some place far away. Tall and sleek in the distance, coming toward them, a deadly

beauty in the mad fury of men’s devotion to destruction and death.

Hamilton asked the Captain, “Will they try to board?”

His jaw set, “When we don’t heave to, she’ll try to force us to ground. Failing that they’ll use

their guns.”

The thought of this pirate flag bearing down on them, their seafarers clamoring over the side,

stabbed Hamilton into a heated white-hot hate of Yankies — good ones, bad ones, any of them.

“They’re not boardin’ us,” the Captain said. “We’ll scuttle first. No Yankee’s puttin’ a foul foot on

my ship, as long as…”

The distant muzzle flash was followed by a muffled boom rolling across the water. Hamilton

sheltered Sarah in his arms. The shot smacked the water off their port bow, sending up a tall

blossoming white plume tall and falling back in a graceful slow splash.

“…a warning shot for us to heave to,” the Captain frowned. “Allows ’em[+> to ]adjust their

range.” He eyed Sarah, “Missus Ingram…” he agonized, “To avoid exposing you to harm, I am

prepared to yield to…”

“You will do no such thing!” Sarah bristled. Her head turned toward this full-sailed invader.

“These philistines are in our waters — attacking us!” Sarah’s blood was up.

“Sarah, the Captain’s right,” Hamilton said

“No, I say!” Sarah whirled to face both men. “We will not yield to those…those barbarians!”

Greer fiery rage showed in full vigor. Her fists clenched, “You said you could make a run for

it! Our armies need your cargo. If there’s a chance…” She glowered toward the oncoming

menace.

Hamilton saw not the pampered daughter of a rich plantation father, but a wind-whipped chalk-
faced New World Jeanne d’Arc girded for battle, blazing with indignation, exchanging armoured

horse for ship and English for Yankie, and loved her the more for it.

He nodded to the Captain, “We run for it.”

“I know how Papa felt,” her lip quivered, “…when he said he hated runnin’.”

“…to fight another day,” Hamilton hugged her tighter.
