Some chit chat.

It’s kind of a dog day afternoon. Mostly cloudy and breezy and lots of looming rain clouds. Even my dog, Quigley, and my cat, Sheba, know when it’s a day to chill. To do what they love best. Sheba is so funny. Quig will be all stretched out and there will be just a tiny space on the sofa. She’ll eye it and meow. Then she’ll jump up and turn round and round looking for room to lie down. Quig will lift his head, softly rumble, and she’ll settle down. They are such a pair.

I’ve been reading a bunch of books and felt like I needed a break. So I’ve spent a lot of time going through Netflix, watching some obscure and low rated movies. I was surprised to find a few that were pretty good. And a bunch that were god awful bad. LOL  And guess what? Now I”m kind of burnt out on watching television. So what am I doing now? Well, I’ve been working crosswords, playing some video games, and I actually started playing solitaire with an actual deck of cards. Plus I’ve pulled out a few crafting projects that needed to be finished.

I think it’s time to get out of the house and do something fun. So what do you do when you can’t focus on one thing?

It was a hot and busy week at work so I came home every day and dove into my house. AAH! The delicious AC! LOL I don’t know how they did it before it was invented.

One thing that still feels like spring here on the Gulf Coast is the cooler mornings and low humidity before that scorching sun builds it up and you are trying to breath that moist air.

I spend most mornings enjoying a hot cup of tea on my back porch and start my weekend mornings there too. This is my outdoor office. I’m working now.

Nice, eh?!  When I’m not reading or on my computer, I pick up my gardening tools and tweak things and plunge in the pool to cool off. I’m in Heaven:)

Some chit chat.

Not much new has happened since last week. I did get a four day weekend and am enjoying it. Was weeding in one of my flower gardens and ran into a very nasty thorned vine. I came inside and forgot to wash my hands. Rubbed my eyes and they were on fire. I was freaking out. It took hours for my burning and watering eyes to get better. Now I’ll wear latex gloves under my gardening gloves. That was a toxic vine.

I’d love some help here. My Kindle is doing the slow death. It works, it doesn’t work. It freezes and drives me crazy.

I’ll go to use the highlight and it freezes. I shut it down, reload, which takes forever, and then it doesn’t save my place and I have to find it again. So frustrating.

I’ve begun keeping a print book close by while I use it in case it freezes up on me.

I bought it a couple of years ago and I’m glad it lasted this long with how much I use it.

Now I’m looking at new ones.

Which should I get?

A Kindle Fire, Paperwhite, or basic Kindle eReader?

I noticed the Kindle Fire is on sale right now for $99 and I almost grabbed it. Then I checked the Paperwhite and debated the price. Then I talked to my sister.

I remember she mentioned the Kindle Fire didn’t have a long battery life.

The Paperwhite is so much like the basic Kindle, the only thing I noticed different was it’s great for outdoor reading. Since I read in the shade, my basic Kindle is fine for that.

Got any suggestions on which I should get? What do you like about yours?

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

Some chit chat.

The other night I had just finsihed reading a book and I glanced over to my nightstand to see which one I’d read next.

I had to laugh. There are two stacks there. One is books I’ve finished and need to write reviews for and one is the next books in line to be read.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned that I prefer to read print books over eBooks. Not to say I don’t read eBooks. I love my Kindle and wouldn’t have discovered so many amazing authors and books without using it.

It’s just that I find it easier to flip back and forth in a print book when I want to check back on something I’d read. Plus I love the smell of them. LOL

My kindle lets me highlight quotes I want to glance at when writing a review, but print books are a different story!

how i read books 001

how i read books 006

That’s what some of them look like after I mark points in the book I want to reference in my reviews.

Something else interesting. Many times, when I’m writing my reviews, I don’t even end up using these tagged sections. I just get going on the review and don’t need them. But they are handy for adding quotes I liked.

So, which do you prefer. Print or Ebooks? And do you use highlights or bookmarks?

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

My Tease for this week is from

Constricted

A Short Story Companion to the Flawed Series

Today is the release for Constricted, a brand new short story related to Becca J. Campbell’s Flawed series. This story coincides with the events in Empath (Flawed #1), and takes place in Logan’s point of view. You’ll need to read Empath first to thoroughly enjoy this story.

If you haven’t already, download a free copy of Empath (links below). Read on to find out more about Constricted.

Constricted (A Flawed Short Story)

Constricted_CVR_SML

My Tease from 21% in the eBook ARC

Logan strode forward and peeled away the tent door, the zipper protesting in a squealing sound. Inside, two young women turned their tousled heads toward him. Wide, frantic eyes met his, and then darted across the tent at something near the opening.

My Review

I loved getting Logan’s story. I like when the author wraps up those little questions that nag at you when you finish a book.

Logan runs. It’s all he’s ever known. From foster home to foster home. And now from job to job.

Jade got to him. Left him feeling exposed and vulnerable in a way he’d never felt before. She knew his secret. He new hers.  Could he let her in? Dare he?

This was a wonderful insight into Logan’s story. The guy is a jumble of pent up frustration and would prefer to live a hermit’s life, cut off from emotional entanglements.

While I felt for him when a particularly nasty woman from his past entered his life again and brought up all the reasons why he should run, I was hoping Logan would man up and stop running.

I felt he and Jade might be good together.

This companion to Empath reveals a side of Logan that’s very personal. Now that I’ve felt his pain, his conflict, I like him even more.

You really need to read Empath to be able to follow Logan’s story here. I hope you do.

Rebecca is a gifted writer. Her characters are genuine, flaws and all. The world they live in appears normal, but what’s really normal. Lots going on to keep you turning pages and wanting more.

4 Stars

Synopsis

Logan’s secret has been exposed. When Jade—a beautiful student at the college where he teaches—discovered the truth, he spilled the whole repulsive story. Jade’s empathetic kindness flooded him with emotions he didn’t know he had and isn’t sure he wants to deal with.

It would be the easiest thing in the world to leave and let Jade be a whisper in his past. He can exit now and regain his anonymity, or he can risk everything to stay and face her again.

It’s not an easy choice, and when he’s about to decide, a woman from his past shows up, making his decision even more difficult.

What really happened when Logan disappeared during Empath? Find out in this short story companion piece to Flawed #1.

Supernatural empathy isn’t a gift, it’s a curse. Anywhere she goes, Jade’s emotions are replaced by those of the people around her.

Jade grew up in a suburb of Colorado Springs, protected from other people by her parents. Now she faces college—and the world—with nothing to shield her from unwanted feelings.

When Cam, a classmate with a major crush on her, unintentionally hijacks her emotions, Jade struggles to keep from being carried away in feelings of attraction. When Ethan, a psychopath with a thirst for fear, fixates on her, the emotional impact could be lethal.

Caught in a deadly trap, Jade must untangle the emotions and find a way to use her empathic curse to overcome this killer or be overcome by him.

CAN LOVE MEND A HEART FULL OF HATE?
Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful.
Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers.
While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly’s life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor.
Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings.

Some chit chat.

I am so sick and tired of rain!

Every morning I get up and face this

raining photo: raining raining.gif

It’s rained so much my lawnmower man can’t mow the grass and it’s getting so thick and tall. Looks like a wild field right now.

I miss the sunshine, the heat of it on my skin. I just bought some new sunglasses and haven’t had a chance to wear them. It’s clouds and rain, rain and clouds. At least it’s warm out.

I can always tell when the next batch of thunderstorms is about to blow in. The wind picks up and about blows me away! rain photo: rain thm4.gif

If you’ve ever been in the south during one of these storms, you know how horrible they can be, and how scary. The thunder is so loud it shakes the house on its foundation and the windows rattle like they are going to jump out of their frames.

Then you hear the approaching rain, loud, almost deafening as it reaches you. In no time the yard is flooded.

With the severe drought on the west coast, I wish I could send them some of this rain.They sure need it and Oh how I long for the sun!

Sorry if I’m whining. LOL Let’s look at the bright side. With all of the rainy days, I did get a lot of reading done and blogging ahead. Got lots to share about books today!

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

Some chit chat.

I’m sorry I didn’t comment on your posts last Sunday. My family decided to stay another weekend and we were too busy having fun. I promise I’ll do better today!

Since I’ve not been around much the last few weeks, I’ve combined several weeks of book news to share with you.

There’s a bunch of reviews and giveaways and wait until you see what I won! I have so many great new books to read. And I plan on reviewing every one.

I was over looking at my reading challenge page and I’m way ahead on most, especially Goodreads. I only add books that I have reviewed and I think I’ll break my record by the end of this year.

Other news. I had such a great time with family. We all stayed at my sister and brother-in-laws house and did a lot of touring, shopping, and eating.

Dinner at Shaggy's on Pensacola Beach

And I got in the pool on Easter Sunday. Only a few of us got in but we did manage to coax my brothers dog in for a swim and she loved it.

I can’t wait for May. My brother will be back down to do some more fishing and my mother is coming to stay for the summer. Good times ahead!

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

Some chit chat.

I missed last weeks Sunday Post. I think it’s been over a year since I hadn’t done one. I felt strange not doing one and, don’t laugh, a bit guilty.

I have family in town and we’ve been having lots of fun and I knew I wouldn’t have time to visit and comment on your posts, so I decided to wait and do one big one this week. I might be a bit late in visiting,  but I’ll be by your posts. I try to visit all of them.

I’ve got lots to share with you and, of course, some more freebies too. Just make sure they are still free before you click the buy button. I normally wait to publish my post later in the morning on Sunday so I can make sure they are still free, delete ones that aren’t, and add on new ones. I won’t be near my computer so you’ll need to check them!

BLURB:

Kaylen has been in the dark for fourteen years – in every sense. His people are hunted, so they must struggle to survive within underground caves. His community despises his family, taunting him constantly. His parents keep him housebound, forbidding him from wielding sword or wand.

When he is finally allowed to attend school, the harsh truth reveals he has much to learn – including a unique magical ability. Kaylen can summon and control skeletons!

With surface-dwellers threatening war, he will need every friend he can make, and to stay true to himself if he is to survive what is to come.

~~~
Enjoy The Excerpt
Chapter 3: Kaylen summons his first skeleton
As Kaylen repeated the words, the strangest thing happened. The earth in Kaylen’s hand started moving. At first it was very slow but then much quicker, in a circular motion like a tiny tornado. The small twister then hopped off of Kaylen’s hand and headed straight for the ground. Once it hit the ground, it disappeared into the floor.
As this was the first sign that Kaylen had any magical powers, he was smiling brightly when he asked the professor what was going on.
“Wait,” said the professor, not looking up at the boy. His eyes were still trained on the floor.
Suddenly, the ground started shaking. In the middle of the floor where the dirt had disappeared, a skeleton hand popped out from the ground. Then a second skeleton hand popped out. The hands seemed to brace themselves on the floor to pull up the rest of the body as the head, torso, and, eventually, the legs magically appeared from below. The full skeleton stood up in the middle of the room. It was at least six feet tall, with sparkling white bones, and… strangely enough… it had Kaylen’s bright green eyes.
