Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper #7

by J. L. Bryan

31291926

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

They say bad things come in threes.

Ellie was able to stop a murderous foe from killing her friends, but it came at a cost. Her boyfriend now languishes in a coma. The paranormal investigation business has new owners and her new boss is as deadly as some of the ghosts she comes up against. And her newest case pits her against a monster who’s sights are set on an innocent child. Ellie and her assistant and best friend, Stacey, will have to be creative to get through the times ahead in one piece.

Just like the previous books, the action gets going and never stops. Ellie is one tough cookie. Sleep deprived and physically battered and exhausted, she’s like the Energizer Bunny…she keeps on going. I love that she stands tall, even when she’s scared. And she has plenty to fear.

I couldn’t have stopped reading if I wanted to. I ate this up in one sitting, loving every creepy, nail biting bit of it. If you haven’t been reading this series yet, you should. And the first book is free. Go grab a copy and get started.

Synopsis

Life is more difficult than ever at Savannah’s only ghost-hunting detective agency. While Ellie copes with her mentor’s departure and other unwelcome developments, she also worries about the supernatural injuries keeping her boyfriend caught in an endless slumber.

At the same time, Ellie and Stacey are called in to investigate an eerie entity haunting a baby’s nursery room. The ghost appears late at night, its face barely visible on the baby monitor, and sings a chilling song.

Soon, Ellie learns there are more ghosts in the house, and at least one of them is a dangerous, child-hunting monster who must be stopped before it kills again.

My Review

As soon as I finished the previous book I downloaded this one and dove in. This time we’re following Ellie and Stacey as they investigate a haunting at a famous movie stars new home. Attached is an old lighthouse with a lot of history. Attached to all of that is some nasty spirits. Time to get trapping.

Ellie’s still tiptoeing around her nasty new boss. She’s putting up with an annoying new team member. And she’s unsure what her next move should be. That’s all put on hold while she deals with a whole bunch of angry ghosts that are threatening the lives of the new client and her family.

I always thought a lighthouse would be a good place for a ghost to haunt. It’s isolated and creepy, especially by the ocean, where there are only so many ways to run. I knew Ellie would ignore the warnings about staying away from it because its falling apart. What I didn’t expect was how smart and creative she was in going about it. Sure, it didn’t go as smoothly as she had planned, but it worked.

I had just finished the last book and dove right into this one, once again reading straight through without stopping. The suspense wouldn’t let go and I had to see how it all played out. A few things that had been worrying me worked out nicely at the end. I couldn’t see how the author would pull it off but he did a bang up job if it. I’m now on the next book, The Tower, and its promising to be just as good. Looks like another night of reading into the wee hours. But I don’t mind the lack of sleep. The stories are that fun.

Synopsis

The South Channel lighthouse is a crumbling antique at the mouth of the Savannah River, abandoned and forgotten for generations. Local stories still tell of a mysterious woman in white who often stood at the old lighthouse, watching the sailors come into port…even long after she died.

Now the property by the lighthouse is owned by a famous movie star in search of a remote beach getaway on sleepy Tybee Island. Unfortunately, old ghosts haunt her new retreat, stirred up by the construction of a luxurious new mansion. Ellie, Stacey, and their team must remove the ghosts, who grow more dangerous and aggressive every night, threatening the lives of the client and her family and personal staff.

The lighthouse has a dark history, with many ghosts, and mysteries to unravel before Ellie can send them on to the other side.

My Review

This was a fast fun story. A little girl making snow angels comes across a cute little snowman. But soon, he’s not so cute anymore.

Leave it to Willow to put a fun, nasty little spin on such an innocent thing as a cute snowman. As the warning says: you’ll never look at a snowman the same way again.

And even though I quickly figured out where this story was going, it was still fun getting there.

Maze Of Souls

Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper #6

by J. L. Bryan

29380654

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve been reading this series from the beginning and the author always keeps his character’s genuine, the scares, well…scary, the suspense at the max and the fun stuff in all the right places.

It’s almost Halloween and Ellie Jordan has a new case. It seems ghosts are threatening the owners and visitors at Pine Hollow Farm. It’s an important time at the farm. They expect record numbers to come for the haunted hayrides, the corn maze, and many other fun events. But restless spirits are putting a damper on things, causing the owners to cancel the big holiday bash.

Ellie is called in when the ghosts start to threaten the family and enter their home. She’s going to need all her skills to trap multiple ghosts. And they aren’t going quietly into the night.

The author really writes Ellie as genuine. She’s scared stiff a lot of the time but still makes a stand against the ghosts. Often getting knocked on her butt. And her assistant, Stacey. You can always count on her snark to lighten the bleakest of moments.

I knew this was going to be scary good. I drew on memories of when I was young and our family used to visit a farm like this. I thought it was fun but also got scared pretty good when we went on the hayride. It’s dark in those woods. There were some super creepy ghosts for Ellie and her snarky sidekick, Stacey , to deal with. As I got deeper into the book, Halloween drew closer and the suspense grew. The holiday is the time of year for ghosts. They’re free to roam and there are so many at the farm. As bad as the ghosts already were, I hated to think what was in store for everyone once Halloween night arrived.

Every time I read a new Ellie Jordan book I cross my fingers, hoping it will be as good as the last one. The author made me a happy camper as I loved this book. If you haven’t had a chance to start this series, you really should. There’s plenty of hauntings and scares to keep any horror fan happy.

Eight

by W W Mortensen

33362083

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

What do a man trying to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, an entomologist, the US Military and some drug runners have in common? Even they can’t imagine what it is. But its out there. Waiting to introduce itself.

What started out to be a race to discover a new source of energy turns into a death trap no one could have seen coming. The author really built on this, fleshing out his character’s so you form connections, dribbling in why each one would even be on this expedition, then dropping you into a tropical hell of mega proportions.

I can’t imagine too many things more terrifying than being in a tropical jungle, far from any chance of rescue, being attacked by huge…things. You get a front row seat. I live in a tropical state and can get the gist of what the stifling humidity must have been like. The swarms of mosquitoes too. But the bugs that burrow under your skin and make themselves at home? Nope. And who knows what’s out there watching you from the dark. So close and unable to be seen. Not to mention some nasty humans with their own agendas.

While the beginning of the book is all about getting there and the who’s who of the characters, just you wait. The last half of the book steamrolls with suspense and horror. Good thing I don’t get nightmares easily. Some of the scenes would have me peeking through my fingers if this were a movie..

The blurb does nothing to give away what lurks in these pages so I won’t either. Suspense, thrills and horror are the order of the day here. If that sounds like your cuppa tea, give this a go.

Synopsis

TERROR HAS A NEW SPECIES

Deep in the Amazon, the solution to the global energy crisis has been found; a mysterious source of power set to end our dependency on oil.

When she receives stunning photographs related to the discovery – courtesy of expedition leader and former partner, Ed Reardon – entomologist Rebecca Riley finds herself on the next flight to Brazil, heading down to join the team of scientists assembling there. She hasn’t seen Ed for more than a year, and their relationship hadn’t ended well.

But his revelation is impossible to ignore.

What she and Ed uncover is beyond imagination: strange statues in the jungle… a ruined city built by the refugees of a lost Pacific continent… and a terrifying new species of animal.

Forced to confront a crippling childhood phobia she’d thought long dead and buried, Rebecca realizes this new species is no ordinary enemy.

It is an ancient enemy, one whose very existence has implications for all of humankind… and the planet itself.

Fury Of The Orcas

by Hunter Shea

36992341

Genre: Thriller

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Being a huge fan of Hunter’s books and having a fascination for the creatures of the sea, I was quite excited to get my hands on this book.

It starts quickly. Something is wrong with the Orcas. Incidents of the mammals attacking and killing humans isn’t just confined to the theme parks. They’re also focusing on ships at sea and oil rigs. The author spares no one and this is a favorite trade mark of mine. Hunter isn’t above killing off his main character’s and that keeps suspense at a maximum.

There’s plenty of gory bits to keep horror fans happy. For the first time, I was more on the whale’s side than the humans. I didn’t warm up to the characters and some scenes of Orca’s being massacred tugged at my love for the magnificent creatures. I felt they were more victims than monsters.

And there was a lot of sex. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against it, but most of the time it just felt like it interrupted the story and was unnecessary. And when I found out why the Orcas were going crazy, I was a bit confused. I was hoping for something more natural. Also, at times this didn’t feel like a Hunter Shea book. Perhaps because it was more of a thriller than straight up horror.

I enjoyed this book, but it’s not a favorite. That said, Hunter Shea is still one of my go to authors for horror. In fact, I’ve already pre-ordered his next release.

Zero Day

 The Hatching #3

by Ezekiel Boone

36044812

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

To say that the world went to Hell in a handbasket is putting it mildly. America isn’t doing so well. The first spider outbreak was fast and furious, killing millions before the spiders mysteriously just died off. The second wave was worse, with the spiders coming at humans in new and sneakier ways. And now, with roads destroyed, communication iffy, the spiders still coming, and everyone pointing the blame at someone else, it’s not looking too good.

I really enjoyed the first two books and my imagination ran wild as to how the author would wrap up his series. There’s lots of characters and many I’d grown fond of. But, being a horror novel, I wouldn’t have been surprised to see some of them meet bloody, sticky ends. While I felt the author played it safe in the beginning, I never let my guard down.

My spidey sense was tingling as the book raced to its conclusion. I couldn’t see the ending and was happy with how the author wrapped it up. And while I wouldn’t have minded a bit more spider action, this was still a creeping, crawling thrill.

~~~~~
Synopsis
In the finale of Ezekiel Boone’s Hatching series, the United States goes to war against the queen spiders that threaten to overtake the human race forever.
The world is on the brink of apocalypse. Zero Day has come.
The only thing more terrifying than millions of spiders is the realization that those spiders work as one. But among the government, there is dissent: do we try to kill all of the spiders, or do we gamble on Professor Guyer’s theory that we need to kill only the queens?
For President Stephanie Pilgrim, it’s an easy answer. She’s gone as far as she can—more than two dozen American cities hit with tactical nukes, the country torn asunder—and the only answer is to believe in Professor Guyer. Unfortunately, Ben Broussard and the military men who follow him don’t agree, and Pilgrim, Guyer, and the loyal members of the government have to flee, leaving the question: what’s more dangerous, the spiders or ourselves?
I couldn’t resist the synopsis for Thea. Always looking for more vampire horror. And I’d read some of Eric’s Bigfoot Wars books so it was a no-brainer to read his very short story The Night Of The Beasts.
Thea
A Vampire Story
by Steven Jenkins
31440297
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Horror
My Review
Thea is a sad and sordid story of a mother’s obsession with saving her daughter. After losing her first one to drugs, her drunken focus is on keeping her remaining daughter safe, at any cost.
I can’t say one good thing about Thea’s mother. Poor Thea. And soon enough, poor mother.
Even though I suspected where this was going to go, it was still well worth the read. Especially as I enjoy a dark, twisty vampire story.
The Night Of The Beasts
The Night of the Beasts by [Brown, Eric S. ]
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Horror / Short Story
My Review
The author once again provides bloody sasquatch mayhem with The Night Of The Beasts, a very brief account that occurs over one night during the Bigfoot Wars.
For folks who prefer their beasts to be true villains with nothing on their minds but ripping humans into little bitty bits, this won’t disappoint. But don’t get attached to the character’s. They’re not at the top of the food chain anymore. As one man soon learns when the hospital where he works comes under attack.
I swear, I held my breath through most of this. It started so calmly and bulldozed into carnage. Wicked fun. And bravo for the killer cover art. Take a close look at it.
Read on if you want to know more.
My Review
 It’s always a good thing when I grab a free book and wind up really enjoying it. This is one of those books.
I like a good ghost haunt. Or in this case, a demon one. Ford Atticus Ford did one thing. One very big thing. Live. On television. And it ruined him. The famous paranormal investigation show was cancelled. His marriage fell apart. And his best friend will never forgive him.
Now, Ford does private investigations. Working with police departments to delve into cases and maybe find those answers they can’t get in conventional ways. When he comes across a particularly dangerous haunting, he begs his best friend, Mike Long, to help him just this one time. But getting rid of a top tier demon is no mean feat and if they aren’t careful, they could become possessed or the demon could latch on to them, bringing danger home to their loved ones. That’s if they don’t die trying to send it back to Hell.
The story starts out with the event that destroyed Ford. Then moves forward to his present situation. I was a fly on the wall, wishing I could yell at Ford, “Don’t do it!” Yet, he risked a little girls life and sanity, and he was lucky she wasn’t killed. I felt outrage and disgust for his actions, understood it when many, along with his best friend, shunned him. But I also came to know Ford, and he won me over. I ended up hoping he’d find his way back to favor.
I particularly enjoyed it when Ford’s friend, Mike, grudgingly agrees to help him. He has a very interesting way of accepting, much to Ford’s discomfort and pain. Yet, Ford takes it in stride. As they work the case, despite their best efforts, they quickly fall back into old routines, and find themselves enjoying it. Desmond did such a great job of making his character’s genuine and often laughable.
And the author has a talent for writing scenes that chill you, fill you with foreboding, and down right scare you. He gives a satisfying ending to this case while adding curiosity about the next one, plus leaves you wondering when Atticus will finally face his demon.
Feel like going ghost hunting? I recommend you give this a go. And the other two books in the series are already released, so no waiting when you finish this one.
I can’t ever resist a zombie horror book. Got a good one to share with you today.
The Death Doll
by Brian P. White
32442883
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Horror / Apocalypse / Zombies
 My Review
The Death Doll takes place two years after the zombie apocalypse went down. Now, bands of survivors struggle to survive the desolation.
One band is lead by Didi. In her previous life she was a porn star and looks the part. Statuesque and voluptuous, don’t let her looks deceive you. She’s a force to be reckoned with. Her mission. Provide for the community and keep everyone alive, at all costs. And the costs are high. The zombies aren’t the only thing they have to worry about. Other survivors want what they have. And the Death Doll stalks the unwitting.
I love Didi. She never shies away from danger. In fact, she steps right up to it. And her steadfast efforts to keep her band of survivors safe is incredible. Especially when there’s grumbling in the ranks and many aren’t so sure about their leader. And maybe they have reason to worry.
Right from the beginning you know Didi has secrets. The author peels them away slowly, surprising you in ways you never suspected. As the group learns her secrets, things go sideways and this is the part I loved the most. Group dynamics are fascinating. Put a bunch of people together, scare them, and you discover who steps up and who throws the monkey wrench in the works.
There’s plenty of action and intrigue to keep the story rolling in The Death Doll. And a lot of surprises await you. A fast read for me and one I’m glad I read.
The Reckoning
 Outage #4
by T.W. Piperbrook
26874548
Genre: Horror / Suspense
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
The storm is still blowing, people are still dying, and the wolves are still raging.
Tom is the lone survivor of the showdown at the end of book three. He’s lost his wife and seen some hideous things. When he wakes up in the hospital, he thinks it’s all over. He’s made it. But he soon learns the storm isn’t finished and neither are the wolves.
Something this author excels at is group dynamics. He puts a bunch of people together in close confines, threatens them with horrible death, and their reactions ring true. Being a fan of character driven stories, especially in the horror genre, I eat this stuff up. And I often wonder how I’d react. Would I be the brave one, step forward and handle things calmly and wisely?. Would I be the hysterical one, fall to pieces and scream my head off? Or would I be the coward, the one no one can rely on who does something stupid?
I’m glad I’m not one of the characters in this book as the body count’s high and there’s no guarantees for anyone. The wolves are too many to count and almost impossible to kill. Claws slash, teeth gnash and it’s bloody mayhem. Perfect for creature and horror fans. And a great continuation in the series.
My Review
 The massacre at the hospital is over. Tom’s survived another night. But with only one more night to feed, the wolves are more dangerous than ever. And Tom isn’t feeling like himself anymore.
With each book I read in this series, I was left wondering what could be worse than this. And with each new book, the author showed me. So I came into this last book with open eyes, knowing it was going to be crazy. And Piperbrook gave me so much crazy. So much suspense. So many bloody werewolf scenes. And a protagonist I’d grown too fond of. That’s not wise as the character’s usually don’t survive. And that ramped up the suspense for me.
The ending is violent. It’s almost over and the wolves won’t go gently into the night. And the epilogue is a hoot. Or should I say a howl.
If you like the sound of this one, be sure to start at the beginning of the series. Each books picks up right where the last leaves off.
My Review
I read the first book in this series and loved it, so when I saw this boxed set for the first three books on Amazon, I had to grab it.
It’s kind of hard to review these separately as it would have to contain some spoilers, so I’m going to tell you about it like it’s one book.
It literally does start on a dark and stormy night. The blizzard has arrived, the power is staring to fail, and the residents of the town, those that haven’t left yet, are free game for the creatures. Doors don’t keep them out. Guns don’t seem to do more than slow them down for a bit. And the dark and snow work to their advantage.
I love a scary good creature story and the ones offered up by the author are so bad, so cunning and vicious, so hungry. And they are everywhere. They’ve been waiting for this.
Another thing I like is when the elements work for the monsters and against the humans. What could be worse than the snow storm of the century. These werewolves knew it was coming and planned accordingly. Some were already living there, and some came with the storm.
Imagine how horrible it would be. First, you witness something so horrific and unbelievable. Then you get past the fear and shock, and accept that the creatures exist. Now what?
Well, you round up anything you can use for weapons and enter the dark, cold night.You try to drive out of town, struggling through snow drifts and hoping you don’t slide off the road.  You see some people being attacked by the creatures. Do you stop to help? Probably not the best idea. Too many of them and you’ll probably just end up torn to pieces. You’re cut off from the outside world and your fear and doubt escalate. Is this happening everywhere?
So on you go. Seeking shelter and safety, and the things out there are following you. This is their time.
There was a lot of suspense and carnage to keep this horror fan happy. The suspense was edgy, and there were some good surprises. Even when I knew what was coming, it was fun reading how it happened.
This is a series I would only recommend you read in order. The books all start pretty much where the last one left off.
Books four and five are out now, so I’ll be grabbing them too.
Genre:  Horror
My 56 from the hardcover.
Kerri: You’ve been in jail? What for?
Andy: Nothing serious. A street fight. Collateral damage…I accidentally damaged what turned out to be a congressman’s car… With the congressman inside…. By throwing the congressman’s son through the windshield.
Andy has some anger issues. LOL
I wish you could see the cover for the print copy. It’s all bright, florescent colors. Looks like it will glow in the dark.
Synopsis
1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club (of Blyton Hills, a small mining town in the Zoinx River Valley in Oregon) are all grown up and haven’t seen each other since their fateful, final case in 1977. Andy, the tomboy, is twenty-five and on the run, wanted in at least two states. Kerri, one-time kid genius and budding biologist, is bartending in New York, working on a serious drinking problem. At least she’s got Tim, an excitable Weimaraner descended from the original canine member of the team. Nate, the horror nerd, has spent the last thirteen years in and out of mental health institutions, and currently resides in an asylum in Arhkam, Massachusetts. The only friend he still sees is Peter, the handsome jock turned movie star. The problem is, Peter’s been dead for years.
The time has come to uncover the source of their nightmares and return to where it all began in 1977. This time, it better not be a man in a mask. The real monsters are waiting.
