Skitter

The Hatching #2

by Ezekiel Boone

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre:  Horror

My Review

I really enjoyed The Hatching so it was a no brainer to continue with the series.

Everyone breathes a sigh of relief. The spiders have died. Could it be over? Is it time to rebuild and get back to life as they know it? Not so fast.

Scientists and experts have been studying the spiders and the egg sacs discovered hidden across the planet. They find some horrifying indications that the worst is yet to come. When it all starts falling apart again it’s every man for themselves as countries are devastated and drastic measures are taken to contain the threat.

I was super excited for this book. I met some great characters that survived the first book and wanted to know what would happen to them. One group in particular, hiding in a luxury fall out shelter, were among my favorites. I could almost see them and had to laugh at some of things they said and did. And they had a dog too. Always love the furry companions. And worrying if it would be eaten by spiders sure added to my worries about the stories outcome.

Even though the book had me jumping from one place to the next and one scenario to the next, it wasn’t hard to follow and I enjoyed the scientific parts. The only thing lacking was spiders. I wish there were more attacks. Sure, there were some, but I missed the endless hordes of spiders creeping and crawling, unstoppable and hungry.

I didn’t realize the series didn’t end with Skitter. There’s an ending of sorts but lots more to be told. I’ll be waiting for what comes next.

According to scientist Melanie Guyer, however, the spider situation seems to be looking up. Yet in Japan, a giant, truck-sized, glowing egg sack gives a shocking preview of what is to come, even as survivors in Los Angeles panic and break the quarantine zone. Out in the desert, survivalists Gordo and Shotgun are trying to invent a spider super weapon, but it’s not clear if it’s too late, because President Stephanie Pilgrim has been forced to enact the plan of last resort: The Spanish Protocol. Just Add Water

Mail Order Massacre #1

by Hunter Shea

34440426

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

My Review

I’m sure many of you bought them. Those sea monkeys advertised in comic books. I did. And so did a couple of boys.They clip out the order form, fill it out, insert their dollar bill and send it off. When the order arrives and their freeze dried pets don’t hatch and start to stink, they dump them in the sewer.

Yep, you guessed it. Time passes. The creatures hatch. They grow. They crawl out of the sewers. Horrific in ways unimaginable. And then they feed. There goes the neighborhood.

I can always count on Hunter to make me laugh and squirm at the same time. It’s bloody good fun on the level of B- movies. It doesn’t have to be spectacular writing. The author doesn’t have to have his ducks all in a row. He just lets it rip and rip and rip.

If you haven’t tried any of Hunter’s books before, this would be a perfect first read. Not too short or too long and packed full of action.

It’s fun! It’s easy! They only cost a measly dollar. Just clip out the ad in your comic book. Then ask Mom to mail it in. A few weeks later, receive a packet of instant Sea Serpent dust. Then:

Just add water . . . and watch them grow!

WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

Just ask David and Patrick. Their “instant pets” are instant duds. They don’t hatch, they don’t grow, they don’t do anything. So they dump them into the sewer where Dad pours toxic chemicals . . .

WAIT UNTIL FEEDING TIME.

It’s been years since David and Patrick thought about those Sea Serpents. But now, small animals are disappearing in the neighborhood. Strange slimy creatures are rising from the sewers. And once the screaming starts, David and Patrick realize that their childhood pets really did come to life. With a vengeance. They’re enormous . . . and have a ravenous hunger for human flesh . . .

Optical Delusion

Mail Order Massacre #2

by Hunter Shea

34600023

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

I remember those silly ads in the back of comic books. I actually bought those sea monkeys. And if I’d come across an ad about X-ray vision glasses, I’d probably have bought those too. When Martin Blackstone tries on his son’s silly glasses he doesn’t expect anything to really happen. Imagine his surprise when they work. He can see under peoples clothes, and more. And the more he dons the glasses the more he sees. Until he sees too much. And the glasses won’t come off.

Who says you have to like the main character to enjoy a book? I’ve read many a good story where I didn’t and had fun seeing how bad things could get for them. Martin isn’t really likeable to begin with. You’ll come to loathe him when the changes begin. When the glasses he scoffed at turn him into something terrible. It made me wonder if Martin might have shown his hidden ugliness in some other way if he’d never put on those glasses. All that evil couldn’t come from out of the blue could it? It had to be there, under the surface, waiting for a chance to come out and play, right?

This is such a fun series. I really enjoyed Just Add Water, the first in Hunter’s Mail Order Massacre series.

While this one didn’t wow me as much as the first book, it was still worth the read. The author gave me the gory fun I’d come to expect.

Witches

by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

2973903

Genre: Horror / Paranormal / Fantasy

My Review

Nothing like some witches to keep me reading into the wee hours. I should add that I’ve read many of Kathryn’s books and that always happens.

The age old battle of good vs. evil is portrayed by white magic and black magic.

Some things never change. Even for witches in present times. Amanda is still grieving over the loss of her beloved and just wants to get through each day. Living in a small town, her unusual ways raise suspicion and she’s the likely culprit for the town folks when the murders begin.

It’s Salem all over again as the town turns on Amanda, calling her a witch, shunning her, and casting the first stone.

As Amanda begins her own investigation, she stumbles into a dark and deadly plot involving dark magic and demons. Now, she’s desperate to reveal the truth before she’s outed by a posse and hung until dead.

A fun thing was the talking familiars. They came in all shapes and sizes and had very vocal opinions. It was also fun to see witches trying to hide what they were from the modern world. They all had different levels of power and couldn’t just twitch their noses and appear somewhere. Even witches had to use cell phones and airplanes.

I thought it worked really well for the story when the author took her story back in time to the witch trials. The contrasts and similarities of life as a witch was intriguing and kept the story moving quickly.

I thought I knew how this would end and worried that it wouldn’t work. That it would be awkward and rushed. Not so. I give kudos to Kathryn for surprising me and pulling it off.

 Witches plus bonus Witches II: Apocalypse

By Kathryn Meyer Griffith

kathryn WitchesII_Apocalypse_Bonus_Kindle

Blurb of double book:

Two Witch books in one:

Witches:

There are witches in the world…some are good and some of them are downright evil.

Amanda Givens is careful how she uses her benevolent powers. She doesn’t want the people of Canaan, Connecticut to know they have a witch among them…even a good white witch. For years, she’s lived quietly in a remote cabin with Amadeus, her quirky feline familiar. At first with her husband, Jake, the love of her life, until a car accident; but now alone after his death. But when she’s wrongly blamed for a rash of ritualistic murders committed by a satanic cult, she knows she can no longer hide. She’s the one the cult is after and she is the only one who can stop them and prove her innocence. Yet as punishment for fighting and destroying the cult, she’s drawn back in time by the ghost of the dark witch, Rachel Coxe, who was drowned for practicing black magic in the 17th century. Now, as Amanda tries to rehabilitate Rachel’s reputation in an effort to save lives, as well as her own, and falls in love all over again with Joshua, her reincarnated dead husband from the future, she has to rely on a sister’s love and magical knowledge, and a powerful sect of witches named the Guardians, to help her get home safely. ***

Witches II: Apocalypse:

The long-awaited sequel to my 1993 best-selling paperback novel Witches is finally HERE! Yes, witches exist…the good and the bad ones…and one day the two ancient adversaries of good and evil will join the fight for control of the world. Amanda has been told her ten year old witch-child, Lizzy, is fated to someday become one of the planet’s most powerful witches. If she lives. If the world survives. Because the world is being threatened by an anti-Christ called Reuben who is prophesied to bring the end of the world by destroying everyone and everything good–including the white witches and warlocks of the world–unless he can be stopped. The Guardians, a secret society of those white wiccans who protect others of their kind and the world from great evil, along with the powerful good witch, Amanda Givens, and her gifted daughter, Lizzy, must battle Reuben and his demonic followers. They must somehow change the outcome of the prophesied end times, aid a possible child of God, help the earth’s people to resist the black witches, demons and the soulless, which the times have brought forth and who are trying to bring hell to earth. Good and evil will be brought together for the final battles. Will Amanda, Lizzy, and the Guardians defeat evil or will it defeat them as they fight with all their strength and powers to save the people, the lives and the world they love. Who will win?***

The Montauk Monster

by Hunter Shea

18371375

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

 My Review

If you like horror in your face, you’ll want to read this book. It’s all out action, with some pretty gory scenes. Hunter wastes little time bringing his creatures to light. Once the killing starts, it gets crazy.

I’m a push over for scary reads involving creatures of all kinds. These were never meant to live outside of the lab they were created in. I know, this sounds familiar. But the author brings you his own version of monsters made from nightmares. I would have been happy with a whole book about the ones that first emerged. But there’s so much more coming. The monsters change, a virus spreads. And it’s blood in the streets with little hope for survival.

With horror stories I’ve learned to not set my hopes too high for the survival rates of the characters. Many often become chow for the beasties.  That’s how it was in this book and it sure kept the suspense ramped up.

I tore through this book and my only wish was that it were longer. I couldn’t get enough of the nightmarish things that crawled through the pages. A killer read.  I’d suggest you read it at night. When all manner of creatures come out to play.

But each savage attack brings Suffolk County Police Officer Gray Dalton one step closer to the shocking source of these unholy creations. The Dover Demon

by Hunter Shea

25878531

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

 My Review

Hunter Shea writes stories I can sink my teeth into. What’s more fun than getting scared, jumping at little noises, and after finishing one of his books, sleeping with the light on.

The author takes an urban legend and brings it to life. The Dover Demon is a big attraction in Dover, much to the annoyance to some and the delight to others. There’s money to be made from tourists flocking in to try to catch a glimpse of the elusive creature.

Back in 1977, an encounter with a strange creature changes several lives. In present time, a snow storm blows in, and once again the Dover Demon is on the prowl, taking victims. For what purpose? We can’t begin to imagine.

I’m not sure when it started, but this story started to give me the creeps. I felt unsettled, on edge. When a story can creep up on me and make me uncomfortable while reading it, there’s no way I can stop reading until I finish it. Even if that means continuing into the wee hours when it’s dark and every little noise seems magnified.

Once the storm blew in and the characters faced the demons again, it got kind of gory. Since it’s mentioned in the blurb I feel I’m not spoiling anything when I talk about the tunnels under Dover. What happened down there gave me a sense of vertigo. It was dizzying and relentless. The demons had a purpose and they weren’t cute little alien looking things.

What does this creature look like? Take a close look at the cover. Then imagine being in the dark and coming face to face with it. Is it a mutated animal? An alien? A government experiment gone horribly wrong? It could be any of those things.

Like urban legends? Like to be creeped out? Then you should read this book.

Enjoy this guest post from the author
.

Wanda is my pen name for Young Adult novels and she is my maternal grandmother. Bentley is my mother’s maiden name. Summers is the surname of my father.

I think somewhere when coming up with an author name I wanted to honor all the people who had a strong influence on my creativity, aspirations to be a writer, and the drive to keep me going despite all the obstacles author’s face when starting.

Those people I wanted to acknowledge were my father, mother and maternal grandparents.

Wanda, my grandmother, was a survivor of the Great Depression. Her family lost their farm forcing them to move into the city and she had to quit school during middle school in order to work and help the family with money. My grandmother was not known as a great listener and looking back, she had severe Attention Deficit Disorder. Conversations never stayed on topic and she’d lose interest if you were talking. She was certainly one of the most friendly person you’d ever know, but somewhere down deep, I think there was a emotional disconnect.

She was married to my grandfather but that was a cantankerous relationship. Before my grandfather I gathered she had been in loved with her first husband who had been electrocuted; and I’m guessing there was other personal history that contained some trauma that people of that generation did not share. I discovered my mother had never been close to her as a child even though everyone in the neighborhood considered my grandmother to be a saint. No doubt she loved my mother the most, but I’m guessing somewhere along the line she forgot how to express love or perhaps there was too much risk in acknowledging her love to another who was so close to her.

But Wanda one thing was certain. She was a prodigy in painting and drawing; though she never received any formal training she left what I consider great pieces of arts. To this day I keep one of her paintings with me wherever I have moved.  An Indian woman looking over a cliff out into a sea. When I saw the photograph she used to make the painting I realized the person looking out was not a woman, but actually an Indian man. She had transformed the cheekbones, skin texture and hair to create this mysterious and beautiful woman. I had this tingling sensation then. I realized she was a true romantic. Someone who only knew how to express love through her artwork. This painting has become a talisman for me over the years.

Her husband Walter, whom she married years later in her life, was a vociferous reader. He was also an ex-Catholic, a self-proclaimed atheist and had a very morbid sense of humor. Every week in the summer we always one made one stop at an old fashion ice cream parlor and then to the library to return his books and borrow more. From him I learned he valued books and stories contained in them than ever did of material goods or money. He also loved history and it was teachings, rather than any formal school, where I learned much of my U.S. History.

My father was a structural engineer who had a knack for what I would simply call divergent thinking. He seemed to have an inborn sense of thinking “outside the box” and look at problems with a singular perspective I’ve never yet seen. I’d say that gave my creativity a sense of complexity that allows me to put unique spins on plots.

And my mother was a straightforward woman who has and probably always be a reader of history. She was never a World War II buff as she detested the Nazi regime and the stories that went with them. But she did always have a sense of appreciation of not just the history before her, but the history she was living. In everything I write I am mindful of the history of each character and how those past experiences create internal motives for this character to now make decisions.

As I wrote Wehr Wolff Castle I had a deep appreciation for the people who shaped me. I attempted a story with a twisting plot with some complexity, likable characters, narrated a romance, added some morbidity along with dark humor; and everything was indeed embedded in the Nazi Germany time period.

Bryce is a psychologist, author, and the founder of Queer Sense
Theory.

Bryce writes popular fiction genres meant for all audiences under Bryce
Bentley Summers, and pens gay fiction under B. Bentley Summers,
although he’d argue that anyone would enjoy his gay fiction pieces.
Bryce’s full time work is at the Veteran Affairs where he has been employed
for five years. He has extensive history of working with people
diagnosed with PTSD and he used these experiences when writing Fresh Meat.
The novel, Fresh Meat, recently won Dan Poynter’s Global eBook Awards for
best gay fiction. This piece is more than just a book, but embraces
gay identity while deploring the hateful violence that happens in the
U.S. prison system, and across the world. The book parallels the
vicious Man-Punk prison system to the long ago abolished American
Slavery System. However, Fresh Meat is not non-fiction, but fiction,
and it’s genre is best described as Supernatural Horror.
Rotville and The Zombie Squad, are two of Bryce’s recent completions. The
Zombie Squad is a teen Post-Apocalyptic Thriller that recently
received Reader’s Favorite 5-Stars. This novel has humor and is fast
pace, that follows four teens in New Orleans who find themselves not
only chased by psycho gangsters, but in the middle of zombocalypse.
Rotville is a new adult/ adult Sci-Fi Post-Apocalyptic Horror that
takes place in the near future, in a city called Rotville where
people with a rot disease are quarantined. Inside this city is the
mega prison Colleseo, where inhumane experiments are carried out on
inmates. It’s also the birthplace of Dylan, a super soldier who must
fight his way out, save a couple of youths from the new deadly
mutants, and keep from being re-caught by the greedy director.
Bryce is also the author of the fiction Young Adult Dark Fantasy/ Sci-Fi
series AMEN TO ROT. The novel NYTE GOD is the conclusion to this
series. The Amen to Rot series and Nyte God pit Ace and his friends
against alien invaders who are turning humans into mutant creatures.
Bryce authors popular fiction with a style that entices readers of all
backgrounds to consume, and makes every attempt to make his
characters diverse.
As noted, Bryce does dabble in gay fiction, and pens it under B. Bentley
Summers, though in truth, these works are meant for everyone to read.
Bryce is the founder of Queer Sense, a theory that describes how
people form attitudes. The theory provides insight into how specific
components in cultural contexts shape our beliefs and values, which
ultimately form our attitudes. The nonfiction book, QUEER SENSE: How
Are Attitudes Formed? A Revolutionary Guide for Teens, Parents,

With Halloween right around the corner, it seems only right to share some movies I want to watch.  Here are just some of the thrillers, chillers, and sci fi movies on my list.

If you have any suggestions, let me know!

I’m a huge fan of the Aliens movies so of course I’ll be watching Alien: Covenant.

~~~~~
I loved the original movie for Stephen King’s IT so, yep, the new release is on my list.
~~~~~

Getting goosebumps from The Conjuring movies, I must continue with the side series about Annabelle. Annabelle, the first movie, didn’t do much for me but I hear Annabelle: Creation is supposed to be pretty good.

~~~~~
And I can’t go through a year without more sharks! 47 Meters Down looks amazing. Hope it lives up to the hype.
I enjoyed the first Open Water movie but the second was an epic fail. Maybe this third one will be better.
~~~~~

A Cure For Wellness looks like one of those that creeps up on ya. I’m liking the looks of this one.

~~~~~
And of course I have to check out the Blade Runner 2049 Movie! I don’t see how they can come close to topping the original but I have to see it anyway.
So, are any of these are on your list? And I’m always looking for more so leave me some suggestions!
The other girls felt it too. Both Jaz and Ali would lay awake at night and feel it running through them – bringing them even more vitality and strength than even their young ages provided.
I’ve read a bunch of Kathryn’s books and enjoyed them all. From man eating dinosaurs, to witches and other strange beings, it’s always a wild ride. I’ve got another good one to share today.
The Calling
by Kathryn Meyer Griffith
1957917
Genre: Mystery / Horror / Paranormal
 My Review
Kathryn is quite skillful at pulling me out of my mundane world and dropping me into one of hers. This time it’s Egypt. The land of queens and pharaohs, pyramids and ancient mysteries.
Faye and her husband, Nick, are ideal partners. They share a strong work ethic and a love of music.  Their happy existence is soon shattered and sends them across the world to Egypt where they must solve an ancient mystery and face unspeakable perils.
Faye’s visions become stronger. The pleas of the long dead Egyptian princess will no longer be ignored. Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? I’m a sucker for this type of scenario. A modern woman haunted by a ghost from long ago.  Faye is a strong character. She’s well grounded despite the haunting visions, loves her husband, and is surrounded by friends that share her passion for music. Take out the visions and she sounds a lot like me in my younger days. Made her very likable and easy to relate to.
Nick adores Faye. Shares her passions. And when he gets a peek into one of her visions, he doesn’t hesitate to drop everything and follow her to Egypt. Nick is my kind of guy. Loyal, loving, and all alpha when it’s required. I loved him and Faye as a couple.
Ankhesenaton has been haunting Faye ever since Faye died and came back. She needs her help to find justice for the murder of her and her family. When I read the part about what happened to her, it brought sadness and anger. I wanted Ankhesenaton to get her justice. And maybe a good dose of vengeance too.
I enjoy traveling through reading and the author is masterful in her visual descriptions. You see the immense pyramids. Feel the heat of the desert and the abrasive sand blown against your exposed skin. I was awed and thirsty at the same time.
This story reads fast. Starts out ordinary as you meet the main characters. Moves into a ghostly mystery. And then drops you into the heat and dust of Egypt, where things you can’t imagine come to light. As with many of her books, Katherine doesn’t hesitate to put her characters in peril and she often lets them perish. This added to the suspense as I really wanted Faye and Nick to survive. I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best but prepared for the worst.
A haunting mystery, some time travel, and plenty of action and suspense with a dash or two of horror. If you enjoy any of that, you should read The Calling.
My Teaser for this week is from
The Dover Demon
by Hunter Shea
25878531
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Horror
 My teaser from 28% in the eBook.
In this scene, Kelly is watching footage from a security camera in her house. She was passed out on the couch.
What she hadn’t seen before was the dark figure standing behind the couch, looking down at her. It had a thin neck and large, oval head. Somehow, the television’s light stopped just short of the figure, keeping it bathed in shadow. All except for the flesh of its long, tapered fingers, bone white and needle thin, as they touched her breast.
Kelly screamed until her throat was raw.
I read this some time ago and don’t remember that much. I’ll be sharing a review for my 31 Days of Halloween Horror feature and wanted to reread it to recall the story. It’s scarier than I remember! LOL
Read on if you want to know more.
