Welcome to My Monday Minis.

This is where I review short stories and flash fiction.

For today I’ll be telling you about Bear Dog

My Review

Bear Dog is still a mystery to me.

I never got a true sense of where this takes place. The author is from Canada, so perhaps there. I’m also guessing as to when it took place. The way Jule expresses himself and the mention of a bailiff and constable have me thinking the 1800’s but I could be wrong.

Despite these unknowns, I still enjoyed this story. There’s what I think is native american lore dribbled throughout, especially pertaining to the bear dog.

I’m also not sure what the bear dog is. Is it living? A spirit? Is it a dog or a monster? You’re never told what it really looks like and left wondering whether it’s even real. This mystery has depth and more than one meaning.

Told from the perspective of the younger boy, Jule, you’re privy to his thoughts and experience the farm and its surroundings from his feelings, down to the chirping of a cricket.

I understand this to be the first in a trilogy. While I did get a bit of a conclusion at the end, I was still left with many questions.

I’ll be watching for more as much for those answers as for the authors prose.

Am I dreaming?

The world seems wrong and mixed up and different from the one that I know to be real, so it could be a dream. Yet…I don’t dream this vividly. I inhale; the bite of salty air fills my lungs.

That felt real. I look down — my hands are strange, the wrong color, like I’ve been picking blueberries and haven’t washed them. I stare at them for a moment, turn them over, and inspect my palms. Everything feels real, but something isn’t right….

And then I realize I’m naked. Naked, kneeling in the ocean.

Synopsis

Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant — until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn’t know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea — a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid — all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she’s becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she’s tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude’s affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there’s only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.

I’m also really good at relaxing people, so my latest book Contains all the tips a librarian/yoga teacher wants writers and readers to know. I wrote “Relaxing the Writer – Guidebook to the Writer’s High” to help everyone to sits to read and writes and recorded my relaxation CDs “Relaxing the Writer Relaxation” and “Relaxing the Writer Hand Meditation” to offer a way to learn to release stress!

I’ve written 2 romance novels, one with a paranormal twist a “Romancing Rebecca” and another “Flying Free” about living on an airpark (as I do) and a couple of shorts.

I love to review books and my secret guilty pleasure is Goodreads Never Ending Book Quiz…current rank 492 – out of 76,7440 (old news)
