 Written All Over Her by Mia Darien

One word can change the story of your life forever.

Abduction. Torture. Surrender.

Eleven months from her adolescence have framed thirty-one years of Detective Nykk Marlowe’s life. Despite the trauma of her past, and the unique physical scars it left her with, she’s built a career as a detective for the Adelheid Police Department.

Her personal life might only consist of caring for her sister and a pet rabbit, but she accepts that.

She accepts that she’ll never be able to be like “normal” people, even the supernatural ones. As long as she can keep the past where it belongs, she’s okay.

But when the body of a teenage girl shows up with the same scars that Nykk sees in the mirror every day, her “okay” life gets turned upside down and she’s forced to confront the past she’s been looking away from for sixteen years.

And when it turns out there’s already more than one victim, the pressure’s on to stop the killer before any more girls are tortured, mutilated, and murdered.

The Hunger Chronicles by Tes Hilaire

The Hunger Chronicles: A collection of shorts

If you remember nothing else, remember this…

The nightmare is here. There is no way out. Even death isn’t an escape because it is death. And chances are it’s already taken everyone you know.

…You’re on your own.

Just because the face is familiar doesn’t mean they won’t kill you. Hiding won’t help. And it’s past time to run. They’re already here. And hunger is the only thing they feel.

Flesh and Bone by Jefferson Bass

Flesh and Bone (Body Farm, #2)

goodreads-badge-add-plus
.

Anthropologist Dr. Bill Brockton founded Tennessee’s world-famous Body Farm—a small piece of land where corpses are left to decay in order to gain important forensic information. Now, in the wake of a shocking crime in nearby Chattanooga, he’s called upon by Jess Carter—the rising star of the state’s medical examiners—to help her unravel a murderous puzzle. But after re-creating the death scene at the Body Farm, Brockton discovers his career, reputation, and life are in dire jeopardy when a second, unexplained corpse appears in the grisly setting.

Accused of a horrific crime—transformed overnight from a respected professor to a hated and feared pariah—Bill Brockton will need every ounce of his formidable forensic skills to escape the ingeniously woven net that’s tightening around him . . . and to prove the seemingly impossible: his own innocence.

My tease for today is from Written All Over Her by Mia Darien

goodreads-badge-add-plus

“It happened really fast, you know? I barely even remember it, except that it was sudden and darkness followed. It’s like there were two lives, or maybe like there were two of me. There was the Nykk who existed before and then the long moment of darkness before the Nykk that existed after.”

“I guess that leaves a frightening question.” Her pale brow furrows in the most pronounced show of emotion you’ve seen yet.

“Who am I now?”

~~~~
Wow! That cover art is astonishing!
I’ve been wanting to know Nykk’s story. Now I will!
Welcome to My Monday Minis.
This is where I review very short stories and flash fiction.
For today I’ll be telling you about The Harvesters
by Ashley Hill
harvesters trailer mock up 4
goodreads-badge-add-plus.
You get all of the ingredients for a good horror story. A thunderstorm, a rustic old cabin deep in the woods and some really creepy characters. There’s the huge shambling guy with the axe, the sly shotgun wielding old man, and the creepy kids.
I think the kids creeped me out the most. It had me thinking Blair Witch, when they hear the weird voices outside their tent and the kids giggling and slapping the tent.
The Harvesters is relentless and you land right in the thick of it from the get go.
Ash creeps around in the cellar of the ratty cabin and finally spots her boyfriend, Jason. He’s manacled to a metal table.
From this point on, I girded myself for what was coming.
Ash manages to get his hands free before this huge man throws an axe at her. She heeds Jason’s warning and hightails it but is rushed by a little kid. She sweeps past him and slams the door of the cellar shut behind her.
That’s when she hears the whispering.
She rushes to the truck outside, but, of course, there are no keys. A vision flashes in her head of the keys hanging on a hook inside the cabin.
This is where I wonder what I would’ve done. We know the warnings for these scenes. “Don’t go back inside!” But if your true love is lying in there, helpless, about to be carved up, what else can you do?
So, in she goes again.
From the very beginning it’s a mad dash through this short story.
You’ll get to read about it from two points of view. Ash narrates most of the story, but Jason does have his own side to tell.
Then their story meets again as they struggle to survive multiple attacks with no help for miles in any direction.
 I was thinking serial killers or a family of cannibals maybe. I’m still not sure exactly what they wanted from Ash.
That brings me to the ending. It’s a cliffhanger and a big one. I kind of saw it coming, but I think I would have been disappointed if it wrapped up neatly.
This way, I get to look forward to more. I wonder if one of the next books will be about Jason. He has a dark past and I think his story would be harrowing.
We’ll see.
Creatures of Appetite by Todd Travis
Creatures of Appetite
goodreads-badge-add-plus
They call it The Heartland Child Murders.
Everyone else calls it a nightmare. Locked doors don’t stop him. He leaves no trace behind. He only takes little girls.
His nickname… The Iceman.
A deranged serial killer roams wintry rural Nebraska with a demented purpose no one can fathom. Special Agent EMMA KANE, a former DC cop and damaged goods now with the FBI, is assigned to babysit burnt-out profiler JACOB THORNE, once the best in the business but now said to have lost his edge, as they both fly to Nebraska to catch this maniac.
Thorne is erratic, abrasive and unpredictably brilliant, but what he and Kane find in the heartland is much more than anyone bargained for, especially when the Iceman challenges them personally.
The clock is ticking and a little girl’s life is on the line.
And maybe even more with that, once they find out what he’s really up to.
Dark Deeds by Susan Fleet
Dark Deeds: Serial killers, stakers and domestic homicides
goodreads-badge-add-plus
True crime: 12 chilling case studies. Meet the victims, their killers and the bloody consequences of their deeds.
No one knows how many serial killers are roaming the United States. Some experts believe they murder as many as 180 people each year. Others say the count may be much higher because some serial killers hide the bodies and they’re never found. A pretty farm girl fed her victims to the hogs
Stalkers far outnumber serial killers. Each year they threaten 3.4 million people in America. Although stalkers may profess love for the objects of their obsession, many seriously injure or kill their “love object.”  Eg: You’re the one that I want … to kill.
Domestic homicide is rampant in the US. Women and children rarely kill family members. Men commit the majority of domestic homicides. Some are crimes of passion. Others are carefully calculated. Why bother with a divorce when you can kill your spouse?  A cross-dressing doctor murdered his wife to keep his millions.
Nibble, Nibble, Crunch by Willow Rose
Nibble, Nibble, Crunch
Warning: After reading this story you’ll never be able to look at a snowman the same way again.
In the beginning she thought it was sweet, this snowman who emerged as if from nowhere, but soon the six-year old Emma realizes that this snowman is different … very different.
NIBBLE, NIBBLE, CRUNCH is a horror novella from Willow Rose, author of the International Bestselling horror-series starring the Danish reporter Rebekka Franck. It is not for the faint at heart.
My tease for today is from Extinct by Ike Hamill
Extinct
goodreads-badge-add-plus
A black shape up the street caught his eye. The falling snow made it hard to see past the end of the driveway, but that black mass hadn’t been there before, he was sure of that. Robby kept shoveling, but kept his eyes trained on the shape.When he flicked the shovel to throw the snow, his hood pulled to the right, blocking his vision. When his hood came back to center, the shape moved closer.
Robby backed towards the garage door. He had closed the big door so more snow wouldn’t drift into the garage. The path to the back porch sat under a foot of powder. The black shape shifted, right before his eyes. It moved to the end of the driveway. It stood tall in front and trailed off towards the back, like a…..
Cemetery Planet
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Imagine it. All alone on a planet far, far from home.
It’s a graveyard, the whole planet. And that’s all there is, you and the dead.
You think you are alone, but….you find you’re not.
The hologram you created for a companion doesn’t count. But she should.
She’s the one you’ll need when it comes calling.
I just had to read this book!
The premise is not that far-fetched.
Where will we put the dead in the years to come, when there is no more room to bury them.
This takes place 800 years in the future, when space travel is common, and for some, affordable.
You can come visit your loved ones, or just pay a fee to keep the grave maintained.
Kind of like a theme park for the dead.
That’s where the caretaker, Harvey Crane, comes in.
His job is to maintain the graves and keep the facility up and running, even though no one comes here anymore.
He takes a holographic image from a dead woman’s grave and enhances her so he’ll have someone to talk to. So he won’t feel so alone during his stint on the planet.
When things start going all weird and breaking down, he just thinks the equipment is in need of some maintenance.
But then he keeps seeing something streaking from gravestone to gravestone and he realizes he’s not alone. There’s something else, something monstrous here. And it wants him.
scary graveyard photo: graveyard 2qsm4id.gif
Even if there wasn’t something there, I would probably conjure something up in my half-crazed imagination.
No human contact and the only real voice you hear is your own. You could probably go for days without saying a word.
Who knows how you would handle that. What tricks your mind might play on you.
Except, it’s no trick this time!
The author took this awesome idea and ran with it. I read it in one sitting and had to go right out and get the next book in this series.
The ending was exciting and leads you to wonder, where is this series going next.
I look forward to finding out.
Synopsis
1989, rural Victoria, Australia. Something is preying upon the township of Howqua Hills. Brian Derwent, head of the local Police Station, must simultaneously grapple with the investigation, his disintegrating personal life and unseen forces that are not of this world.
Part thriller, part crime-fiction, all supernatural horror, The Dark Horde tells of the return of an ancient evil that is neither stoppable nor comprehensible…
.
.
I’ve already reviewed The Dark Horde but am reposting it here for your convenience.
From the opening page to the horror driven end, this story had me riveted.
Howqua Hills is under siege by something. Monster, demon, alien, or creature from another dimension, who knows? They have been waiting, but no more. Out of the shadows they come, the Dark Horde.  Hungry for flesh, they thrill to feel our terror and revel in our pain. Want a taste?
“The beast had an acute sense of smell, enabling it to smell the raw terror in the sweat of its quarry. The smell of this human was strong, indulging its senses with delectable wafts. Hungry for the kill, it gripped the wooden handle of the trap door and slowly teased it open. The shrieking cry of its hinges rang out, enhancing the fear of the cornered prey…It entered, scraping its clawed feet across each wooden step with calculated intent to terrify… Two down, one to go.”
The action is intense and relentless and the creatures are absolutely terrifying. Want a bit more?
“It glared at them with red, hate-filled eyes the shape of swollen slits as its bloodied snout curled to reveal a chaotic array of sharpened teeth. It grinned.”
Able to manipulate our minds, they invade our dreams with heart-stopping nightmares. I was worried they would invade my dreams. I read this book in one sitting and finished in the wee hours. Maybe it was because I was sleep deprived, but I didn’t remember dreaming. However, there are many more nights to come.
Brewin’ is a master at making you afraid of the dark. I suggest you sleep with a flashlight!
