About the Author

Hargrove

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life.  So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase.  Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodgeball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head.  Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window.   She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone and hit #4 on her speed dial.

Boss:  Hello

A.M.:  Boss, is that you?

Boss:  Why yes, A. M., who else would be answering my phone?

A.M.:  Er… right.  Well, I’m calling to let you know you can pick up my luxury Ford Focus at Starbucks near the interstate.

Boss:  Why ever would I want to do that?

A.M.:  Because I quit!

A.M. hit the end button and speed dialed her husband.

A.M.:  Hi hubs, can you pick me up at Starbucks?

Hubs:  Sure… Having some car trouble?

A.M.:  Not at all.  I don’t have a car to have trouble with because I just quit my job.

Hubs:  WHAT?!

A.M.:  It’s time for a new career and I am going to be a very famous novelist.

So began A. M. Hargrove’s career as a YA/NA and Adult Romance writer! Her books include Kissing Fire, Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge, the series the Guardians of Vesturon (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, Beginnings and the upcoming reEmergent) and Dark Waltz.

A funny thing happened while I was reading The Twelfth Child. I became so engrossed in the story, I forgot to take notes for my review. I always keep pens and scraps of paper handy wherever I am when reading.

I was so into Bette’s story, I plum forgot my notes. So. smiling happily, I dove right back in and read the complete story again.

All of Bette’s books are laced with her southern prose, making me feel at home, looking for an old rocking chair to sit in while I read, with a glass of iced tea handy, the condensation dripping down the sides.

Come up on my porch, pull up a chair and get comfortable.

I have many things to say about The Twelfth Child and a really great giveaway too!

Abigail Anne Lannigan couldn’t marry a boy she didn’t love. She ran away to escape and it broke her heart, knowing her father would never forgive her.

Seventy years later, Abigail is in her twilight years but still going strong. A chance meeting with Destiny, the young lady who moved in across the street, is the beginning of a lasting friendship.

Destiny is young and determined to make it on her own. She just moved in, has little money and not much to start a home with. As her friendship deepens with Abigail, she accepts her gifts of unused furniture, but insists on working for it.

What started as just a helping hand here or there, becomes more nurturing as Abigail’s health begins to fail.

About this time, a young man named Elliott enters the picture. He claims to be a distant cousin from Abigail’s long lost family. He wastes no time in making life difficult for Destiny.

He knows the old woman has a million dollars stashed away and being a money hound, he figures Destiny is trying to steal it.

He accuses Destiny of absconding with the million dollars and she’s hard pressed to prove otherwise, hiring a dashing lawyer to defend her.

Only Abigail knows what really happened to the million dollars and she’s not in a position to tell.

One thing I always enjoy about Bette’s writing is her ability to take you into the past and flash you forward to the present in her stories without a glitch and as always, her characters are authentic, they live and breathe.

Abigail’s early years were fascinating and her brave young heart was still the same so many years later. Some of the things she said, the words she used had me cracking up. I just wanted to hug her. If I had a friend like Abigail I would be so lucky.

Destiny is happy-go-lucky. You could say she has a rosy personality, always seeing the best in people. She’s sweet and funny, a joy to be around.

I was scared for her when Elliott accused her of stealing Abigail’s money.

She is loyal, nurturing and honest. A tender soul facing a horrible accusation.

And every story needs a bad guy. Someone to loath. Elliott is just that guy. A real stinker.

Elliott is greedy, selfish, manipulative, and a big fake. I wanted so bad to give him a swift kick in the you know what, hard!

I always feel welcome and at home in Bette’s stories and become so attached to the characters that I share their emotions. I care what happens to them, laugh with them, cry with them, and fall in love with them.

Bette added just a little bit of the supernatural to this story, making it that much more fun.

Strange noises. Phantom footsteps. Wrapping on the walls. Ear blasting shrieks. And a closet door that won’t stay closed.

This and more is happening at Allen and Selena’s house.

At first, they put it off as the house settling. But as more strange things happen, they have to face facts.

For some reason. after all the years they’ve lived in their house, it is haunted.

Whatever is haunting them is getting stronger, more territorial, and dangerous.

Something has to give.

I know what I’d do. I’d be out of there.

I’m not easily scared, but I don’t think I could handle what happens in this house.

Something that can reach out from beyond and hurt you is not to be messed with.

As the entity got stronger and more vicious, my shoulders tightened up, my head drew in to my shoulders, my elbows tucked snug against my body, and I braced myself as I kept on reading.

The author had me connecting with Allen and Selena , wondering why in the world they didn’t just leave. I was afraid each time I turned a page that the worst was waiting for me.

So much dread from so few words. I recommend you read this after dark, preferably on a stormy night. It’s meant to scare you and the mood should be set. Just keep a flashlight handy. Wouldn’t want to be left sitting in the dark.

What’s that noise? Nope, sitting in the dark, our mind will imagine all kinds of things. Is the closet door closed?

I was very lucky and got this as a free download. Thanks Brian. I can’t think of a better way to discover new authors.

BLURB:

After a tragic loss five years ago, Sally Overby becomes an Attorney in Atlanta. She convinces herself that all she’ll ever need again is her young son, David, and her life as an attorney. Until one day, Colin Dean barges back into her life and promptly blows her safe world apart, driving her crazy as only a guy she’d had a “school girl crush” on can.

Sally is wary to love deeply. Only, with every loving look Colin gives her plus every sweet kiss, as the attraction between them sparks, she can’t help but wonder if she’s met the one she should be with. And although Colin didn’t realize his life was going to change so quickly, amazingly, he isn’t the least bit interested in fighting that change. Instead, he’s gearing up for a different fight altogether. The one for Sally’s heart.

Will Colin be able to convince her that’s it safe to love him… and that forever isn’t really out of reach?

The Eyes of Love is a novella… so you can enjoy it in just one day!

Writing tips

Two Important Writing Tips: Pull Readers In and Write What You Know

Of course, writing is a highly personal craft and everyone does it differently, but these two tips are probably the most common, so let’s spend a little time discussing the best way to implement them.

How many times have you picked up a book and started it, only to put it down within the first few minutes? You really don’t want the book in question to be yours do you? You know your story is good, but if it begins with something along the lines of, “Ellie sighed and got out of bed. She’d had a full night’s sleep but she was still so tired. As she got dressed she thought of everything she had to do that day. Cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping…” Guess what? Ellie isn’t the only one who’s tired. I’m practically asleep just from the first few sentences! Punch up the beginning by adding dialog or some form of action to pull the reader in. For example: “I know, I know,” Ellie muttered as she slapped the snooze button. “I’m getting there.” Her dog Jasper looked at her from the foot of the bed with concerned eyes and she sighed. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s not your fault 8 hours doesn’t seem to be enough anymore.” See the difference? It’s a little easier to connect with her as a character when you’re not exhausted from a laundry list of complaints.

Now that you’re off and running with your strong beginning, you should implement the second tip right? You should write what you know! Well…maybe. If you want to write your autobiography then you don’t need to tweak this tip at all. Other subjects can be learned with the proper amount of research, so that isn’t really a problem either. However, if you want to write a ten-book long fantasy series about a race of moth-people this tip presents a problem, right? It actually applies more than you think. As the creator of the world in your story, you are the only one who truly knows it. You just have to make sure the laws of your world remain consistent in all of the books in your series. For example, if one of the things you know is the moth-people can’t get wet, make sure to remember that and avoid swimming scenes in later books.

A glimpse inside The Eyes of Love:

“Hi there. I’m Gracie…” the waitress said as she put down a napkin and some silverware.

“Gracie. It’s me. Sally Overby,” she said grinning.

Gracie stopped in her tracks and squinted her eyes. “Sally? I can’t believe it! You’re stunning, honey!” she said reaching down and hugging her. “What are you doing in town?”

“Reunion. And to see Momma, of course.”

“I can’t get over how beautiful you are!”

“Thanks.”

“You were always a sweetheart of a person, but now your outside matches your inside.”

“That’s a nice way to look at it.”

“So, what have you been up to?”

“Let’s see… Became an attorney, got married, had a son, became a widow…”

“Oh, Sally, I’m so sorry! I remember that now. Your Momma told me a few years back. You’re still single?”

“Yep. But I have a date to the reunion tomorrow night, so I guess I’m officially back on the dating circuit now,” Sally said giggling.

“Date? Who with?”

“Colin Dean.”

Gracie started fanning herself. “Oh, girl, you scored on that one, huh?”

“I did. He’s a wonderful guy.”

My Review

Sally was the ugly duckling in highschool, always bullied. One girl was more vicious than the others and made her life a living hell.

But highschool doesn’t last forever, and Sally went on to college, getting her degree, passing the bar, and becoming a lawyer.

On top of that, she fell in love, got married, and had a son.

Now, it’s been five years since she lost her husband to an accident and she’s a single mother, just like her own mother was.

When the invitation to her class reunion arrives, she figures, why not. This ugly duckling has become a swan and it’s time to preen.

I’m sure you’ve been to at least one class reunion. It’s always fun to reunite with old friends and see how everyone has changed. Especially that sweetheart you had a crush on.

I think that was the most enjoyable part of The Eyes of Love. Well, except for when Sally runs into her old nemesis.

The newly kindled romance is endearing and the face off between Sally and the wicked witch of highschool is  very satisfying. Those years of bullying toughened her up and I liked how Sallie handled herself.

She’s tough but soft, courageous yet vulnerable. Someone you’d want in your corner.

This is a fun, heart-warming tale that’ll have you cheering for the good guys, and booing the bad ones.

Angelina Rose

eyes love Author Photo

Angelina Rose has wanted to write ever since she could hold a pencil. The first daughter of immigrant parents, Angelina had her head buried in books, lost in a world of heroes, heroines and exotic places.

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Angelina’s author career.

“I awoke in the ICU… I had been unconscious for several days,” Angelina says.

In 2010, Angelina had a long stint in hospital following her involvement in a motor vehicle accident: the longest time off work (as a Registered Nurse), she’d ever had in her life!

It was then she took up pen and paper and started to write again, just as she had done when she was a child. She wrote four short fiction stories for young adults, entered them in several competitions, and managed to win three first prizes!

After happily dipping her toes into writing those short fiction stories for young adults, Angelina has now authored four books in a new “Mill Creek Crossing Romance” series… contemporary romance intended for adults.

The “Starting Over Series” is another contemporary romance series she wrote about a subject she knows well… nurses and their love life. At a recent reunion of her graduating class, she could not help but notice how the same girls would group together and laugh, chat, and even shed some tears over their lives since graduating. Many of the girls had divorced… so Angelina thought “what if a group of the nurses came up with a plan to meet in two years and have a new love story to share?” Then the first story in the series was born.

There is always a story running around in her head. A man with thick dark hair, gray-blue eyes, with an engaging smile and a quick wit… or a girl crying over a broken relationship. She finds herself talking to these characters during her day: when she’s doing dishes, or bathing babies at the hospital. These characters crop up on days at the beach or on walks through the neighborhood. This is how the stories start to grow.

Angelina’s mother was an author, so Angelina grew up with a love of words and stories. If she wasn’t writing a short story about something that took her fancy, her head was buried in books… reading, reading, reading, as her brother constantly told her…

When she’s not spending time with her goodlooking man, or quality time with her laptop, she’s working at the hospital, hanging out with her family and friends, or walking her two dogs around the neighborhood. Angelina spends as much time as she can traveling, then coming home and including some of those adventures in her stories.

Angelina really loves to hear from her readers and she invites you to connect with her on Facebook as she interacts daily with her readers there!

I am fascinated by sharks. All kinds of sharks. I’m not sure why, but I think it’s because of the danger they present along with their beauty.

Yes, sharks are beautiful.

Imagine a great white, weighing in at 2000 lbs. Now image that blown up to 46 – 59 feet long with 7 inch teeth and a mouth you can stand upright in!

megalodon photo: megalodon- 800px-Megalodon_scale1.png

That’s your megalodon, the prehistoric cousin of the great white shark.

The popular theory is their diet consisted mainly of whales. Just imagine a shark that big. We wouldn’t be much of an appetizer.

megalodon photo: megalodon megalodon.jpg

When Commander Jonas Taylor is ordered to make one more dive down into the  36,000 foot Challenger Deep, he knows he shouldn’t be piloting. He’s exhausted, shaky and his motor functions are impaired.

Left with no choice, he dives deep into the abyss.

What he doesn’t know is someone else is down there. They know the megalodons exist and want to bring them up to prove it.

Jonas and his crew dive smack dab into it when they encounter a raging megalodon, hell-bent on taking out it’s annoying competition.

The luminescent white image rushes towards them, growing to tremendous size, with a mouth that could swallow their mini sub whole. Jonas has one chance to make the right decision. The wrong one will land them right in the massive sharks jaws.

Having read the other four books in the Meg series, I was thrilled to see this short prequel. It gives you Jonas’s backstory about his situation at the beginning of the first book. You’ll read how he ended up with a tarnished reputation and ruined career.

You’ll also be meeting Megalodon up close.

I swear, I could almost feel the fear when these men first spotted the meg. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in that sub, no way!

I’ve heard a rumor there may be a movie based on the Meg series, maybe this year. I’ll be first in line.

If you haven’t read the Meg books, this is a great introduction.

For those of you who have, this is an excellent addition to feed your Meg fix.

Adam Light

Adam Light

Besides being the best father and husband I can be, my ultimate goal in life is writing horror fiction that will knock people’s socks off.

I began the journey into writing for the public in the fall of 2011, and I have not looked back since. I admit that I got a late start on it, as I am pushing 40 now, but I believe that an eleventh-hour commencement is preferable to none at all.

I have self-published five short stories to date. The most recent one entitled THE CONTINUANCE AGENCY is the first chapter in a planned series still in progress. This one is a departure for me, and comes as a refreshing turning point in my writing. I look forward to writing longer works, my long term goal being to write full length novels.

I have been humbled and emboldened by all the positive responses to my stories, and thus encouraged to continue my quest. Thanks to all who have read and reviewed my work, giving an unknown author such as myself a chance to unleash my madness upon you.

Synopsis

Sixth-grader Vannie Taylor’s mom has just died. Her father’s completely lost without his wife and brings Vannie and her younger brother to live in a dismal cottage on the estate where he manages craft fairs, dinners, and other events.

A ghost named Archie befriends Vannie, and helps her prepare a wonderful supper for her brother. After Vannie discovers Archie’s secret, he asks Vannie to help him make amends for something in his past. But helping Archie means accepting a very large change in her own life. Things get back to normal for Vannie, but not in a way she’s ever imagined.

My Review

In movies, casting makes or breaks the film. The same can be said for books.

The author has a great cast in Getting Back To Normal.

Vannie’s almost twelve when her father uproots the family and moves them into a dumpy old cottage on the grounds of Merry Mount Gardens, the estate he works for.

She’s not happy with the move and neither is her little brother Robby. He’s obsessed with a stray cat he’s been feeding, Theodore, and worries if the new people living in their old house will take care of him.

Vannie worries about who will take care of them, as her father has immersed himself in matters of the estate and is often absent.

Her father looked to his wife for comfort and support. They all did. She was the glue that held them together.

Now that she’s gone, they are quickly becoming a dysfunctional family.

Vannie’s saving grace is Aunt Mayda. She’s not really her aunt. She was her mothers best friend. She owns Merry Mount and helped them to get the cottage.

Aunt Mayda lives in the city but makes frequent visits, lending her support where needed.

One day, Vannie makes a new friend.

Archibald Heatherton is Mayda’s grandfather. He’s also the resident ghost.

Vannie is the only one who can see him, and he’s asking for her help.

He chose to stay after his “foolish death” to ensure Mayda lives happily ever after.

Vannie thinks it’s a pretty tall order. Does anyone get their happily ever after?

Vannie is a brave young lady. Her situation adds a heavy responsibility on her small shoulders. Her dad is buried in his work, her brother is obsessed with a stray cat, she’s missing her home, her school, her friends.

Now a silly ghost wants a real life fairy tale ending. Can helping Archie maybe help her own family? Will they ever get back to normal?  What is normal anyway?

Without Archie the ghost, this could have been a heavy read. Archie, with his backflips and cartwheels, and aura of mystery, lightens the mood, making this a fun story told from Vannie’s point of view.

Getting Back To Normal is for young readers. I’d say middle grade. The characters are real and the situations are true to life, well, except for Archie, and the adventures are exciting.  And I’m all for a happily ever after.

This took me back to when I was young and I spent all my time in the library. I would grab my selected books and sit in a quiet corner, reading until it was time to go home. I loved taking those books home, choosing which one to read first, and diving into a new world.

I wish I had young children to share this book with. I would love for them to meet these characters and interrupt me when I’m busy to exclaim about something that happened in the book.

Description

Jack has some ‘splainin’ to do!

That’s right! Callie Lassiter’s normally well-behaved Great Dane Jack has run off and done the wild thing with the neighbor’s dog. It must be puppy love! It’s doubly embarrassing since she’s a professional dog trainer. Of course, the neighbor would have to be hot, hot nightclub owner bad boy Owen McKay, just the kind of man Callie is determined to avoid.

Owen’s comfortable with his playboy status and the hype in the media. But the ground moves beneath his feet when he gets an eyeful of the girl next door. The Dog Whisperer never looked this good! How can he convince this wholesome honey that his player days are behind him? Maybe Jill, his Great Dane can help him with this dilemma now that she’s pregnant and Callie’s dog is to blame.

Is this bad boy a bad bet?

My Review

Leashed is a fun summer read for by the pool.

I read this fairly quickly, having many laughs along the way.

It’s almost like there are two romances going on here.

great dane puppies photo: aren't they cute ashlinspuppies.jpg

Jack and Jill, the two Great Danes, do the doggie thing and now Jill is going to have puppies.

This is where romance two begins.

Callie is trying hard to stay away from her sexy neighbor, tabloid making club owner,Owan McKay. He is beyond sexy and Callie has a thing for the bad boy. But, after too many crash and burns, she’s promised herself, not this time.

Owan’s idea of romance is a different flavor each week and the tabloids are too happy to flash the pictures. He’s never felt he was missing anything until he became entangled with Cassie. Now he’s wondering if this sultry, cheeky tom-boy might be something special.

The first thing that made me smile was the dogs. I love a book where animals lend their own personality to the story, making it fun and genuine. Most of us have pets and they are a part of our family. Giving these Great Danes the names Jack and Jill is so cute and had me grinning.

As Jill’s day of delivery draws closer, her mate, Jack won’t leave her side, which means Callie and Owan are spending a lot of time together at his apartment, getting tangled up in more than leashes.

great danes photo: danes3 danes3.jpg

I may have had an idea where this would all end up, but I had a great time getting there.

Anybody looking for a fun, romantic comedy, and a love of dogs, will enjoy this book.

It’s a novella, so it reads fairly quick, and is a stand alone in the series, which I especially like.

I’ll be reading the rest of this series, for sure.

Welcome to My Monday Minis.

This is where I review very short stories and flash fiction.

For today I’ll be telling you about Hummingbirds

by William Sharp

Hummingbirds

goodreads-badge-add-plus

John and Carley have found the perfect getaway.

When Carley spotted the rustic cabin for sale on-line, there was no stopping her.

The idealic little cabin with its panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado was an escape after the noise and stress of New York.

Still very much in love after six years of marriage, they are quite happy with just each other for company.

While enjoying his morning cup of coffee and the breathtaking scenery, John’s peace is shattered when he sees Carley stumble out of the brush and collapse.

She’s rushed to the CDC’s Genetic Displacement Lab, where she comes to and is able to tell what happened to her on her morning walk.

A hummingbird had attacked her. She knew immediately it was one of them, and hurried to get to the cabin before the symptoms overtook her.

The first thing that caught my attention was what could a little old hummingbird do to cause such distress.

Well, these aren’t really hummingbirds, they are just labeled as such because they look similar to them.

These things are actually hatched from meteorites that made it through our atmosphere and landed in various locations.

They are indiscriminate creatures, attacking men, women, children, and animals, injecting their victims with something.

If that’s not creepy enough, their injections cause irreversible changes.

A really good horror story is one where you have a real connection to the characters and are concerned for their well-being.

In this case, I just hated what might happen to these two. The author had me connect and like them immediately, so I felt sadness for Carley and John. I wanted to go back and change what happened.

The author had all of the power and wielded it well. I was completely hooked right to the bitter end.

If you like horror and science fiction, I recommend you read Hummingbirds.

It has a lasting impression.

The term Trochilidae isn’t what these creatures are called. It’s the latin word for hummingbird and I just used it for my title because it sounded alien!

William Sharp

William Sharp

William Sharp is a life-long scifi fan. He has been writing for pleasure since he was a child, right on through creative writing in high school and college, and lots of medical/technical/professional writing in his career as a litigation attorney.

William’s stories are heavily influenced by the themes and style of Golden Age and some New Wave scifi. He believes the most memorable scifi stories explore the human condition, human interactions, and common human problems, against a backdrop containing futuristic scifi elements. The writings of Arthur C. Clarke, Harlan Ellison, Issac Asimov, and Robert Heinlein are the most influential to his work

William is married and lives in Texas. He dabbles in acting in community theater, enjoys playing the guitar, and has just recently written his first one-act stage play. He loves his wonderful German Shepherd named Liesl and loves even more his terrific wife and three kids, all of whom would kill him if he repeated their names here.
