Don’t Look at Me
J.P. Grider
Publication date: March 29th 2018
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

Haven:
A diligent hand carved this hole in my face.
It stole my confidence, my identity, and ended my short-lived career as a broadcast journalist.
I am now unemployed. Alone. Ugly.
And expected to get over it and move on.
Go on living life as usual—as if the world doesn’t judge the grotesquely unattractive.

Quest:
It’s been three years since I was kicked out of the Army for nearly killing the opposition’s militia commander with my bare hands.
I am now unemployed. Alone. Angry.
And expected to forget the nightmares that hold me hostage and move on.
Go on living life as usual—as if the world doesn’t judge a dishonorably discharged ex-soldier.

Don’t Look at Me is a modern-day Beauty and the Beast tale—reversed and twisted. Because even the ugly need a good story, and even the beautiful are ugly deep down.

Check out this glimpse inside:

(I know all too well that transitions are difficult)

When I moved to Jersey from California, I had no idea that days would go by where I wouldn’t think of the incident that led to my being other-than-honorably discharged. For me, the events of that night have been branded into my brain—the consistent nightmares the hot iron that won’t let the scars heal. But since finding out about Haven’s attack, I find myself thinking about her more and more—why was she walking alone in the middle of the night? What was going through her mind when she was so viciously attacked? What is going through her mind now? Was she raped? It isn’t part of the slasher’s modus operandi to sexually assault his attackers, but he also doesn’t carve out whole sections of skin in the faces of his victims. According to reports I’ve read over and over online since learning of Haven’s attack, his approach is to leave two parallel slash marks down the right side of his victims’ cheek. From what I could see in the dark, the heft of Haven’s lacerations are on the left side of her face. It doesn’t make sense. The Stratford Slasher has only attacked each of his victims once, but if Haven’s wounds weren’t inflicted by this same man, could the one that did hurt her return to finish the job? I wish she’d take me up on my offer to help me in the store. Then I could keep an eye on her and make sure that doesn’t happen. But she barely stays on the phone with me for two minutes when I call her to ask. And the only time she’s ever called me was to thank me for the supplies she very much needed during the storm two weeks ago. I know she has a lot to work through since her attack, but I wish she’d let me help her to get through this transition from on-air personality to whatever she needs to do next. Because I know all too well that transitions are difficult. Especially when that transition requires living an entirely different life than before.

With Haven at the forefront of my mind, I can’t help but blurt out a question during one of our group sessions. “How can I help a friend who doesn’t seem to want my help?”

“You don’t,” Warren says at the same time Mary asks, “What kind of help does your friend need?”

“She needs help getting her life back. It was pretty much taken from her when some loser used her face as a canvas to do with as he pleased.”

“Poor girl,” Mary says while the others mumble something similar.

“And now she won’t go out in public. She has her food delivered to her. She only goes out in the middle of the night, wearing a getup she thinks hides her face.”

“Does she trust you to help her, Quest?” Mary leans forward, crossing her hands over her lap. Mary’s name suits her. She’s kind, soft-spoken, and nurturing. The Virgin Mary, my mother would say. The Mother of all mothers.

I answer honestly. “She hasn’t known me long enough.”

“Until she can trust you, I don’t think she’s going to accept your help. Is she getting counseling?”

“I don’t think so.”

“It sounds like she could use some professional counseling, but would she be open-minded about giving this group a chance? To get her headed in the right direction?”

My eyes go to the fluorescent lights on the ceiling. “I doubt it.”

“Then, just be her friend. Don’t try to help her overcome this, just be there for her until she finds her way.”

So, that’s what I resolve to do. Be her friend.

Don’t get caught in the surge.

Through a bullet hole in a wall, I watch a man bleed to death.
Those responsible think their crime died with the victim, until I identify them.
What’s a girl to do when she’s being hunted by murderers
witness protection can’t even stop?
Run.
My only refuge is a place I vowed to never go again.
When it’s do or die, an eight-year-old heartache suddenly seems trivial.
Besides, he won’t be there anyway.
But he is.
Turns out my old pain feels brand new the second his eyes meet mine.
I can’t leave. I can’t stay.
This snowy town that’s supposed to be my shelter
suddenly exposes me more than before.

Bellamy

Breathing was something my body forgot how to do. An automatic action that suddenly became something so very complicated.

Liam,” I said, the word low and strained. It used up the very last bit of my oxygen.

His hands flexed again, still holding on to my arms.

That was the problem. The reason my lungs were burning and my sight was blurred. He was touching me.

I wrenched away, nearly tripping. He reached to steady me again, but I made a strangled sound, and he stopped.

The second there was some precious space between us, I sucked in a ragged breath. Then another.

“You’re here,” he rasped.

“You weren’t supposed to be.”

He smiled. Oh, why did he have to do that? The dimple in his chin appeared, and my knees started to shake.

Eight years. Even after eight years, he still reduced me to putty.

“Thought about me, did you?”

Every. Single. Day.

“Of course not.” I drew myself up, wrapping my arms around my body. Oh God, I looked a mess. I was dressed like a homeless person…

Oh God, I was a homeless person.

And I’d come here.

This was a very, very bad choice.

He stepped forward, and I took a step back. Liam frowned, and my eyes raked over his face, taking in his features, noting the way he’d changed over the years.

He was bigger now. So much bigger. His hair wasn’t as long as it used to be. Eight years ago, it was so long he could pull it into a short ponytail at the base of his neck. He said he liked it that way because it drove his father crazy. Now it was shorter on the sides but still long enough to run your fingers through.

His jaw was more chiseled. Light-colored hair filled it out, defined it even more. And his eyes.

Oh, his eyes.

Still the same stormy gray, the same depths I could get lost in for hours. They were wiser now. Almost more hawk-like, as if he could penetrate even my deepest of secrets with that stare.

The trembling in my knees moved to my hands. I stood there staring at him, unable to speak, looking like a homeless woman and trembling like a mouse caught out in the cold.

“Is your father with you?” he asked.

The words were like a knife right to my chest. I actually winced when he said them.

After my throat worked, I managed to reply. “Um, no. I’m alone.”

He frowned. He was starting to see something wasn’t right. He would know if I stood in front of him any longer.

There was something about Liam Mattison that managed to strip me bare.

I thought it had been because I was sixteen. But here I was at the age of twenty-four, and I knew it hadn’t been my age.

It was him.

“Ms. Lane,” the concierge spoke from somewhere behind. “I spoke to the manager, and I’m sorry, but there isn’t anything we can—”

I spun. “It’s okay!” I cut him off instantly, wishing I could have done it sooner.

“Manager?” Liam wondered from behind.

Of course he’d heard.

The man glanced behind me, his eyes widening a fraction.

“What’s this about a manager, Kenny?”

His eyes flickered to me, and I shook my head, begging him to shut up.

“Who runs this place?” Liam snapped.

I gasped. “You run BearPaw now?”

“Yes,” Liam replied with all the confidence in the world.

“What about your father?” Kenny wondered behind us.

“Why did you need a manager?” Liam asked, ignoring what he said.

“I… ah…” I began, then went for my bag I’d dropped on the floor. “I should be going.”

“Like hell,” Liam growled, grabbing my arm again. His hold was firm, but it didn’t hurt.

And damn if I stopped breathing again.

“Please don’t touch me.” I gasped.

Liam frowned but let go. “Stay,” he ordered.

MADDIE

“Who the fuck invited you?” I snarl at Tyler. “And how the hell did you even find out where I live?”

“I stopped by Pete’s. Met Pete. Sweet guy, by the way. I would’ve imagined a strip club owner as being kinda—”

“Pete told you where I live?” Jesus. Thanks, Pete. Fuck.

“No, no, not exactly.” Tyler’s standing way too close to me now. The girls are pretending not to be able to hear him, but it’s clear they’re eavesdropping. I hope they’re better at fucking guys for money than they are at spying.

Tyler leans in closer still, and I really, really wish he would not do that. Because I hate him and don’t want him anywhere near me. Or maybe because I can feel the heat of his body and he kinda smells delicious. Which just pisses me off more because I hate him.

He lowers his voice and continues explaining how he found me. “Don’t be mad at Pete. He didn’t want to tell me where you live. Seems like a really ethical guy.”

“Except he did tell you where I live.”

“Well, yeah, but it cost me five grand.” My eyes go wide. “I mean, he’s ethical for, y’know, a guy who runs a strip joint.”

Nope. This is not going down like this. “Get. Out.” I’m pointing at the door now.

“No!” Diane whines. “No, no, no. We’re just getting to know him, Maddie! Oh, my God. This guy. Where the hell have you been hiding him all these months?”

“Where have I been hiding him?” I see red as I go to him, hands out, and slam them into his chest. The force of my push makes him step back… half a step. Maybe. “I wasn’t hiding him anywhere, you traitors! This asshole ducked out on me years ago. And when I needed him, when I was begging him to—” I shake my head to clear my mind. “And then he shows back up and thinks everything’s gonna be fine just because we fucked a couple of times when I didn’t know it was him!”

There’s a beat before Annie says, “You fucked him?” with, like, way more excitement in her voice than she should.

“Not the point!” I shout as I slam my hands into his chest again.

But this time, he grabs my wrist and stops me, saying, “Can we please talk?”

I struggle in his grip, but he holds tight. I clench my teeth and spit, “Let go of me.”

He does. Immediately. Both hands up as if in surrender.

I decide to change my strategy. Because clearly Tyler Morgan is being Tyler Morgan. He attracts people to him like a siren song calling sailors to the rocks. He knows how to play up the act he perfected long ago. Seemingly genuine, charismatic, and fascinating as he leads the rest of us to our destruction.

So I pull the friend card out and whirl around to face Annie, Diane, and Caroline. Taking a deep breath, I say, “He’s not what you think,” in the calmest tone I can muster. My voice is shaky. My hands are trembling with anger. But I hold it together. “He ruined me,” I say. “He broke me into tiny pieces, dropped me to the ground, and walked all over me.”

Annie just stares at me, confused.

“What do you mean?” Diane asks.

“He left me, Diane. After Scotty died. He left me alone. He never came back. He never even showed up for his funeral. I begged him,” I say, starting to cry. “I begged him and he told me to stop. He just went on with his life like nothing happened. Like my brother didn’t just die the most horrific death possible. Like what we all meant to each other was meaningless. So I hope one of those stories he told you about our childhood included that little fact. And then…” I continue, drawing in a deep breath, willing the strength it takes to get this last part in so I can twist that knife in his chest the way he did mine. “And then he went off and made millions of dollars. Been living it up in a goddamned penthouse, no cares at all. No worries at all. While I’ve been back here…”

But I lose it there. I can’t say the words selling myself. Because I’ll die right now if I have to say that. I’ll die.

There’s a filled beat while everyone stares at Tyler, who never breaks eye contact with me. And I really wish he would. Because his eyes are sad and hurt-looking and no fucking way will I fall for that shit. No. Fucking. Way.

Caroline mutters, “He’s a millionaire?”

Jesus Christ.

Clowders
by Vanessa Morgan
Genre: Horror, Suspense

Clervaux, Luxembourg. This secluded, picturesque town in the middle of Europe
is home to more cats than people. For years, tourists have flocked to
this place – also known as “cat haven” – to meet the cats and
buy cat-related souvenirs.
When Aidan, Jess and their five-year-old daughter, Eleonore, move from
America to Clervaux, it seems as if they’ve arrived in paradise. It
soon becomes evident, though, that the inhabitants’ adoration of
their cats is unhealthy. According to a local legend, each time a cat
dies, nine human lives are taken as a punishment. To tourists, these
tales are supernatural folklore, created to frighten children on cold
winter nights. But for the inhabitants of Clervaux, the danger is
horrifyingly real.
Initially, Aidan and Jess regard this as local superstition, but when Jess runs
over a cat after a night on the town, people start dying, one by one,
and each time it happens, a clowder of cats can be seen roaming the premises.
Are they falling victim to the collective paranoia infecting the entire
town? Or is something unspeakably evil waiting for them?
Their move to Europe may just have been the worst decision they ever made.

My Review
.

They say cats have nine lives. What that means in the lovely isolated town of Clervaux, Luxemburg is they take nine. That’s right. When a cat dies, nine human lives are taken.

When an American family moves to Clervaux, they believe the legend is just that, a legend. But then a cat is killed and not long after someone dies. One down, eight to go.

This started out so hopeful. A scenic little town, friendly inhabitants, and lots of cats. But slowly, the atmosphere darkens. Strange noises are heard. Something prowls in the house at night. Claws click across the floor. Food disappears, Shadows hide a hunched over figure. And the friendly neighbors become not so friendly. Sounds like a good movie, doesn’t it? Thanks to the author’s talent for showing the story, it felt like I was watching it.

It takes a lot to give me the creeps. I’ve read a bunch of horror stories and watched lots of movies. A few scenes in this book are so creeptastic! There’s this scene where something is stalking the next victim. It moves boldly through the crowd of tourists. They think it’s part of something put on to entertain and take pictures of it, even as it attacks. I’d like to think I’d know the difference. I read it over again and still got creeped out.

Soft kitty. Warm kitty. Little ball of fur….. Not!

“This seat taken?” a nicely timbered voice asked.
Ally glanced up and took her time looking over him before she answered.
He arched an eyebrow and smiled. “Did I pass muster?”
“How do you do?”
He cocked his head to the side. “I’m good. You?”
Ally laughed. “I’m glad you’re good, but ‘how do you do’ is more like ‘hello.’”
“Hello.” He smiled, and ooh, he was cute. “So I do pass muster?” He moved to sit down.
Ally held out a hand. “Not so quick, chump.” His dark hair was short, military or missionary short, but it was nice—clean and thick and would probably feel good beneath her fingertips. His face was lean and proportioned with a firm jaw, a straight nose, and smooth, tanned skin. She liked the crinkles next to his eyes and mouth as he smiled at her, awaiting her perusal. He’d had some experiences in life, good and bad, if those crinkles told her anything. He was a big guy—broad and at least six-three with lots of lovely muscles peeking out from underneath his T-shirt and board shorts. It was his eyes that finally convinced her to accept his request. Their deep brown sparkled at her, though she could tell he could be very serious.
He tapped the edge of his tray. “How about now?”
“Okay, no harm in sharing a table.” She winked at him and picked a bite of rib off the bone, savoring the tang of the barbecue sauce and the heartiness of the meat. No, she never took men home, only selectively dated those who passed her intuition test. She trusted her intuition completely and she could have fun with this hot, tough-looking guy.
He smiled and dug into his brisket. “Mm. This place is good.”
“One of my favorites.”
“Have you been on the island long?”
She wished. “A few days.”
“Oh. You act like a local.” He ate a bite of beans and took a drink of water before asking, “Which part of England are you from?”
“London. Kensington, to be exact. You?”
“Long Island originally. I like your accent a lot.”
“I’ve been in the States for over six years, so it’s faded.”
“Don’t let it fade.”

Deep in the Hollow
The Chindi Series Book 1
by Brandy Nacole
Genre: Paranormal Suspense
316 pages

Let me share some wisdom with you. There is evil in this world we cannot
see, not because it is hidden from us, but because our minds refuse
to accept its existence. But once we are able to get past what
everyone says should not be, it becomes our responsibility to stop
the evil we now see.
This insight wasn’t given to me until a year after I lost the most
important person in my life: Bryce Rowan. Now, after another death at
the same spot where he died—the overlook, where the mysterious
lights dance amongst the trees—I begin to wonder if they were
accidents after all.
Lucky for me, I’m not the only curious one in town. Cooper, a ghost
hunter (aka chaser), and his sister Jada have moved to town and are
starting to ask questions.
But the more we find out about this town and the people who live here,
people who I have known my whole life, the more I begin to think
there are those who would rather keep the evil secret, even if it
means we will never be safe, and that more will die.

Buried in the Bayou
The Chindi Series Book 2
280 pages

Our lifestyle, son, doesn’t have room for happily ever after.
I know this. My dad drilled it into my head so many times, I used to
chant it in my sleep. Then came Jo. She made it impossible to
remember the danger of teaching an outsider our secrets. After
helping her find peace, I left to keep her safe.
Jada and I hit the road to continue our family duty of slaying evil
spirits. With another closed case behind us, we head to the Louisiana
Bayou to solve a murder and find a missing hunter. But as we dig
through the town’s history, we begin to discover this is not a
simple haunting. A darker evil is feeding the spirits.
As the danger begins to mount, Jo appears in my life again. As much as I
want to be with Jo, I must do everything I can to keep her safe. I
have to push her away. Before it’s too late.

Gemini Brandy Nacole is a writer of urban fantasy and paranormal books
published by Ponahakeola Press. A reader from a young age, Brandy has
always loved folklore and stories of beings that go bump in the night.
Whenever she’s not reading or writing, Brandy is spending time with her
family and friends, throwing around crazy ideas, teaching, and
singing like a rock star at a concert for no one else but herself.
She loves plants, but unfortunately is a killer of anything that
requires water but can’t voice (scream) their needs.

Necessitites

The Donnie Ray Cuinn Series #4

by Boyd Taylor

36576892

Category:  Adult Fiction,  225 pages
Genre:   Suspense Crime Fiction
Publisher:  Katherine Brown Press
Release date:  December 5, 2017
Content Rating: PG-13 + M (There is a murder and elusions to sex. Some mild cursing.)

My Review

This is the most convoluted of the books in the series. You don’t even get to Donnie until about halfway through the book. He’s requested to defend a war hero in a murder case. David lost his legs in Iraq and has overcome a lot. He boxes and runs marathons and winds up marrying into a very rich family. But he might not get his happy ever after.

He can’t outrun the murder charge and remembers Donnie from another case. Donnie’s reluctant to take it on as he doesn’t do criminal cases but he can’t refuse after hearing David’s story. An innocent man must be kept out of jail.

While different from the previous books because it’s actually David’s story you read first, Donnie rises to the occasion in the second half. And he’s still dealing with some smaller cases. How he handles them is always a hoot. I like the way the man thinks.

And I got tricked this time. I thought I knew what really happened. Then I didn’t. Then I did. Kept me on my toes throughout and I’m still liking this author’s style. I hope there will be more.

5 Stars

Synopsis

Donnie Ray Cuinn returns to Austin to defend a war hero accused of murder. David Lewis lost both legs in Iraq, but he has overcome his nightmares and his disabilities by sheer willpower. He has learned to run and to box and is a successful newspaperman with a beautiful wife and son. Now the nightmares have returned and he must stand trial for murder. With twists that never seem to end, this gripping legal thriller is filled with suspense and indelibly drawn characters dealing with love and betrayal.

Meet the Author:

BOYD TAYLOR lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and their Havanese dog Toby. Necessities is the fourth novel in the Donnie Ray Cuinn series. In a former life, Boyd was a lawyer and a corporate officer. A native of Temple, Texas, he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in government and an LL.B. from the law school.

Boyd’s first novel “Hero” was prescient in its story about fake news. His second novel, “The Antelope Play,” dealt with drug trafficking in the Texas Panhandle, an unfortunately accurate forecast. The third, “The Monkey House”, involved commercial development of a large green space in the center of Austin, all too familiar to Austin residents. Whether his upcoming novel “Necessities” predicts future events with the accuracy of the earlier books remains to be seen.
