I have such a good book to share today. I finally got my hands on the first in Katie Ruggle’s Rocky Mountain K9 Unit Series.

My Review

I love character driven stories. And this one has a bomb sniffing K9 officer. I couldn’t wait to dive in.

First, there’s Jules Jackson. She rescued her younger siblings from cruel relatives and is on the run. Help from an unexpected source lands her and the kids in the picturesque town of Monroe in the Rocky Mountains.  But maybe hiding in a small town, even with new identities, isn’t the best idea. Those pursuing her won’t stop searching.

Next up is Theo Bosco. I love that name. He’s reeling from the loss of his canine partner to cancer and his human partner to suicide.. The officer leaves behind a four legged officer that needs help adjusting. Can these two damaged beings bond and overcome their losses?

I had such fun with Jules and her siblings. She’s taken on a lot and the kids are a handful. As they settle into their rundown new home there’s some fun incidents. Like when the stove caught fire and almost burned down the house. I don’t know how she does it. Juggling a new life with a bunch of young kids, worrying about being found and holding down a waitress job. You’ve gt to admire her determination and love for her family.

Theo is taciturn and withdrawn. He doesn’t want a new canine partner and the dog doesn’t want anything to do with him or police work. He just happens to be in the neighborhood and spies the smoke pouring out of Jules’ house and rushes to help. Turns out a rat had built a nest in the old stove. More smoke than fire. At least as far as the stove goes.

Jules is fighting a growing attraction to Theo and Theo has no time for a woman. But the grieving dog, Viggy, and the kids are instant friends and that leads to more encounters and romance keeps growing. I liked the dilemma here. Jules is hiding and she’s falling for a police officer, someone she should be avoiding like the plague.

It was hard to listen to parts of this story about Viggy. The dog was so traumatized and I felt so bad for him. I couldn’t help but hope that Viggy and Theo would form a bond and help each other.

With the fear of discovery and a sinister evil waiting to strike, its not all fun and romance. The suspense builds as a school shooting occurs and its heart pounding action right up to the end. It came as a total surprise to find out who was behind all of the mayhem.

I had been wanting to try this series. Seen it around. And I thought I might enjoy it. I loved it. I’m hooked. And I am now starting On The Chase, the second in book in this fabulous series.

 Read by Callie Beaulieu

Callie did a super job narrating this story. Her switch from adult to child and male to female was flawless. She especially nailed it with one of the boys, who stutters. And with the subtle southern accent of Jules. It was a pleasure to listen to her and I’m happy she will be continuing with this series.

I’m tearing through the CORE Shadow Trilogy and want to share my review of the first book, Shadow Of Danger, while the feels are still fresh in my mind. Kristine Mason has now become one of my go to authors for romantic suspense.

 My Review

I won this book in a giveaway a while ago. Kristine also sent me a gnome. You’ll learn his significance further into my review. He sits in my front garden protecting my home. He’s been joined by several others and I suspect I’ll be seeing more. Knowing how much I enjoy this genre and upon some trusted recommendations, I went ahead and grabbed the three book boxed set before I even began reading Shadow Of Danger. I’m now into the second book, Shadow Of Perception, which introduces some new character’s while some favorite ones from the first book make brief appearances.

Celeste is plagued by horrific nightmares and visions of torture and death. A clairvoyant, she sees four women brutally attacked and murdered.

The local sheriff believes in Celeste’s abilities and calls on a trusted friend from a private agency, CORE, to send assistance. The man he sends, John Kain, is having none of it. He’s a former FBI agent, relies on facts and the rest is just nonsense. But before long he witnesses one of Celeste’s trances. The information she provides is vital to the investigation and John comes to accept her abilities.

Reminiscent of shows like Criminal Minds, Karen takes you on a dark journey into the mind of a killer. You get insight into what feeds the need for insatiable blood lust. Gruesome scenes provide a high level of suspense and create empathy for the victims and all of the character’s involved in the case. Kristine does this very well and it’s something I need in a suspense romance.

The suspense builds as the author drops in some twists about the killings and some intriguing side stories.

As for the romance. I had a lot of good times reading about Celeste and John and their instant attraction. It was very believable. Especially when the danger ramped up and the character’s emotions were heightened. And the author provided some much needed comic relief in the form of Celeste’s gnome collection. It started as just one gnome and quickly grew to dozens of them in all shapes and forms.

This book has it all. Suspense that keeps you glued to the book, anxious to see how it all plays out. Anxiety over whether more will die and if they’ll catch the killer or killers before they kill again. And excitement and amusement as Celeste and John fall hard for each other and work through the instant attraction and lusty thoughts.

Dean pulled Dusty from the pen, saddled him up and jumped on.

“Alright buddy, let’s go.” He guided the horse out of the barn and into the dark night. He inhaled the cool winter air as Dusty leisurely stepped into the field.

He loved riding horses—something about it made him feel free; free of worry, free of stress. He closed his eyes for a moment and listened to sounds of the woods around him—the wind whispering through the tall pine trees, the sound of Dusty’s hooves crunching on the icy grass beneath him and the night calls of the thousand different critters that call the Ozark Mountains home. The faint smell of a fire burning somewhere in the distance tickled his nose.

Despite the picturesque surroundings, he looked into the woods and tensed. Usually, being alone on his land cleared his head and gave him a calmness that only the outdoors could provide. But, not tonight. Tonight, the woods seemed ominous in the dark night, with long shadows stretching across the field like fingers reaching to grab a hold of him.

He thought of his mother, and the look in her eyes when she asked about Clint Novak. Anger washed over him, and a renewed determination to catch the bastard that killed his father had him seething. He inhaled deeply, took another swig and looked into the woods.

He’d get the son of a bitch.

As he turned to mount Dusty, something in his gut twisted. A foreboding of something to come.

My Review

The storm is still blowing, people are still dying, and the wolves are still raging.

Tom is the lone survivor of the showdown at the end of book three. He’s lost his wife and seen some hideous things. When he wakes up in the hospital, he thinks it’s all over. He’s made it. But he soon learns the storm isn’t finished and neither are the wolves.

Something this author excels at is group dynamics. He puts a bunch of people together in close confines, threatens them with horrible death, and their reactions ring true. Being a fan of character driven stories, especially in the horror genre, I eat this stuff up. And I often wonder how I’d react. Would I be the brave one, step forward and handle things calmly and wisely?. Would I be the hysterical one, fall to pieces and scream my head off? Or would I be the coward, the one no one can rely on who does something stupid?

I’m glad I’m not one of the characters in this book as the body count’s high and there’s no guarantees for anyone. The wolves are too many to count and almost impossible to kill. Claws slash, teeth gnash and it’s bloody mayhem. Perfect for creature and horror fans. And a great continuation in the series.

 The massacre at the hospital is over. Tom’s survived another night. But with only one more night to feed, the wolves are more dangerous than ever. And Tom isn’t feeling like himself anymore.

With each book I read in this series, I was left wondering what could be worse than this. And with each new book, the author showed me. So I came into this last book with open eyes, knowing it was going to be crazy. And Piperbrook gave me so much crazy. So much suspense. So many bloody werewolf scenes. And a protagonist I’d grown too fond of. That’s not wise as the character’s usually don’t survive. And that ramped up the suspense for me.

The ending is violent. It’s almost over and the wolves won’t go gently into the night. And the epilogue is a hoot. Or should I say a howl.

If you like the sound of this one, be sure to start at the beginning of the series. Each books picks up right where the last leaves off.

My Review

I read the first book in this series and loved it, so when I saw this boxed set for the first three books on Amazon, I had to grab it.

It’s kind of hard to review these separately as it would have to contain some spoilers, so I’m going to tell you about it like it’s one book.

It literally does start on a dark and stormy night. The blizzard has arrived, the power is staring to fail, and the residents of the town, those that haven’t left yet, are free game for the creatures. Doors don’t keep them out. Guns don’t seem to do more than slow them down for a bit. And the dark and snow work to their advantage.

I love a scary good creature story and the ones offered up by the author are so bad, so cunning and vicious, so hungry. And they are everywhere. They’ve been waiting for this.

Another thing I like is when the elements work for the monsters and against the humans. What could be worse than the snow storm of the century. These werewolves knew it was coming and planned accordingly. Some were already living there, and some came with the storm.

Imagine how horrible it would be. First, you witness something so horrific and unbelievable. Then you get past the fear and shock, and accept that the creatures exist. Now what?

Well, you round up anything you can use for weapons and enter the dark, cold night.You try to drive out of town, struggling through snow drifts and hoping you don’t slide off the road.  You see some people being attacked by the creatures. Do you stop to help? Probably not the best idea. Too many of them and you’ll probably just end up torn to pieces. You’re cut off from the outside world and your fear and doubt escalate. Is this happening everywhere?

So on you go. Seeking shelter and safety, and the things out there are following you. This is their time.

There was a lot of suspense and carnage to keep this horror fan happy. The suspense was edgy, and there were some good surprises. Even when I knew what was coming, it was fun reading how it happened.

This is a series I would only recommend you read in order. The books all start pretty much where the last one left off.

Books four and five are out now, so I’ll be grabbing them too.

Do Genes Dictate Who We Are?

Adoption and being an only child runs through my book A Human Element. I am both and they both had a deep impact on my life.

In A Human Element three characters have similar lives. Laura is adopted and an only child raised by loving parents. Ben is an only child but abandoned, when his parents die, to live a lonely existence in foster homes. X-10 is raised alone in a government facility, an unloved experiment.

One common thread connects them all. They grow up alone and eventually parentless.

Adopted children often suffer abandonment issues and feel like they never belong, that they aren’t ‘blood family’.  Being adopted myself I understood this. But as an adopted child I was lucky. I had a loving family and I learned my heritage (and am very glad I was given up. Read more about that here). I got married and had an amazing son. In having him, I have my own ‘blood’ now. I do belong–with my family.

In A Human Element all three characters have similar backgrounds, but how are they different? Ben isolates himself, Laura has an open heart, and X-10 hates the world. Is it their genes that shape who they are or their environment? I’ve found it’s a bit of both.

I like to think we can overcome our genes and thrive in an environment that allows us to do so. In such an environment we can conquer our obstacles and achieve anything, but without love we are lost. And I believe that our genes do not dictate who we are–and this gives me hope. And without hope change is not possible.

In A Human Element Laura believes we all have something redeemable in us, no matter how small. Do you believe that too?

Excerpt with X-10. Can he ever overcome his genes and environment?:

As he lunged for Laura she sensed his conflicting feelings. She saw the scientist who experimented on him and caged him his whole life, taunting him with her existence and fueling his hatred.

She saw all this in the two seconds it took for him to reach her. His sorrowful life punctured her like a knife digging into an old wound. His wounds made her wounds. It was a small window of opportunity to grasp, but all she had. Could she convince him to turn away from evil?

X-10 grabbed her by both arms and pulled her up. His freakish face loomed inches from hers. Her feet dangled above the earthen floor. Scenes from his life blasted across her mind.

A tormented life. A tormented soul. Images of blood and killing and rage. And such loneliness. He had suffered such loneliness. He was an animal as he had been treated like an animal all his life. She pitied him and feared him.

“Charlie,” she whispered. Pain coursed through her. He gripped her harder. She stared into his yellow eyes that shone bright, burning with hate.

“What did you say?” He shook her and she moaned in pain.

“Charlie. I called you Charlie, isn’t that what you want?”
