The Forgotten Ones
by Steena Holmes
Genre: Psychological Thriller

Elle is a survivor. She’s managed to piece together a solid life from a
childhood of broken memories and fairy tales her mom told her to
explain away bad dreams. But weekly visits to her mother still fill
Elle with a paralyzing fear she can’t explain. It’s just another
of so many unanswered questions she grew up with in a family
estranged by silence and secrets.
Elle’s world turns upside down when she receives a deathbed request from her
grandfather, a man she was told had died years ago. Racked by grief,
regrets, and a haunted conscience, he has a tale of his own to tell
Elle: about her mother, an imaginary friend, and two strangers who
came to the house one night and never left.
As Elle’s past unfolds, so does the truth—if she can believe it. She
must face the reasons for her inexplicable dread. As dark as they
are, Elle must listen…before her grandfather’s death buries the
family’s secrets forever.

Welcome to my Saturday Screams where I share books and movies that, well, make you scream! Here’s a movie I watched this week. Might not be horror but it had some eerie scenes.

The Titan

I liked Sam Worthington in Avatar so I gave this a go. Earth is dying and humanity faces extinction. In a desperate attempt to survive, a project begins to make a superhuman race that can survive on Titan, the only planet that we might be able to colonize.

This movie was eerie. I didn’t expect to get so wrapped up in it. Once the soldiers started to change, I knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. I got quite mad at some parts, and cried at one toughing scene. My son came out to get something from the fridge and ended up standing in the living room to watch the last half.

The Titan might not be a blockbuster, but I’m glad I watched it. The one niggle I had, there were a few times when the action scenes jumped forward. You didn’t see how the situations were resolved, just the aftermath, and were filled in by the dialogue.

Okay, one more niggle. In the end it almost seemed pointless. If we alter human DNA too much so we can survive on Titan, are we still technically human?

Many people might find this movie sucks. Some plot holes and areas that don’t make sense. It’s science fiction don’t ya know. Just let it all go, try not to over think it, and you might enjoy this.

Had to give it three stars. It made me cry. I’m such a light weight about sad scenes. LOL

Just Things
Diary of a Serial Killer Book 1
by Erin Lee
Genre: Thriller

Sometimes, the cravings just take over.
Jimmie Putnam is an ordinary man by any measure. By day, he works as a law
clerk. At night, when he can’t fight the cravings, he becomes a
collector. He takes great care of his human Things; buying them
cherry lipstick and reading to them from his journal. When they’ve
been on their best behavior, he even takes them out of his freezers…
Sometimes, the need is just too deep.
Florel Ross has been mostly invisible since the death of her twin, who died
twenty years ago at the hands of a serial killer. Obsessed with
justice, Florel is willing to risk anything for the answers she
craves: What goes on in the mind of a serial killer?
When the two yearnings collide, will it be justice or just Things?

Jimmie’s Ice Cream
Diary of a Serial Killer Book 2

Six months is a long time in the life of a serial killer with active
cravings. Jimmie Putnam has made a lot of changes. Now, with his own
ice cream shop, hiding bodies is easier than ever before. With
sixteen kills under his belt, Jimmie is cocky. And the cravings are
only getting worse:
Have you ever just been in the mood for ice cream?
You can’t really say why that craving comes on.
But you can’t sleep, even at 2 a.m. until you get it.
So you put your sneakers on . . .
Killing’s like that, for me.
Today, I’m in the mood for black raspberry.
Come, take a tour, of Jimmie’s Ice Cream shop…
Twenty years is a long time to wait for justice. And when you’re so close
that you can taste it, you want to serve yourself. Special Agent
Florel Ross has made a vow. She has one year, or until Jimmie Putnam
is about to kill again before she will confront him—or report
him—herself. Now, with his own ice cream shop, watching him will be
easier than ever before. With nothing to lose and obsession steering
her, Florel is fearless. She takes the sort of risks her twin sister
would be proud of. And the danger is only getting worse.
Have you ever been in the mood for revenge?
You can’t really say why that hunger comes on.
But you can’t sleep, even at 2 a.m. until you get it.
So you put your holster on . . .
Come, take a tour, of Jimmie’s Ice Cream Shop:
It’s due for inspection…

Thing Fifteen
Diary of a Serial Killer Book 3

My name is Beverly. I’m more than a Thing.
Every town has its legends. I would know, I am one of them. I am the girl
they tell campfire stories about. The “well-liked librarian” who
was going places until she was kidnapped and eaten by the Ice Cream
Man. I am the warning parents tell their children about, the woman
whose remains were never found…
There’s so much more to my story than how I died.
My name is Beverly Watkins. I was twenty-seven years old the day I
perished at the hands of a serial killer. For more than a year,
Master Jimmie kept me in his favorite freezer and took me out for
weekly playdates. I was the cherry on top of his twisted ice cream
sundae; the Thing he called Fifteen.
It’s only the beginning to my story. You see, justice is haunting. And
tonight, I’m in the mood for it. I’m here to set the record
straight, to make sure all the facts are tied up in perfect yellow
bows like the ones they tied around trees for me. I won’t rest
until I’ve told my own story, my way. Which reminds me: I have a
visit to make.
Care to join me?

Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author Tosca Lee comes a story of love, ancient secrets, and survival. Book 1 in the House of Bathory duology.

When you wake up, you remember nothing. Not your name, or where you were born, or the faces of the people you knew. Just a single warning written to yourself before you forgot it all:

“Emily, it’s me. You.

Don’t ask about the last two years… Don’t try to remember and don’t go digging. Your life depends on it. Other lives depend on it.

By the way, Emily isn’t your real name. You died in an accident. You paid extra for that.”

You start over in a remote place with a new name, a fresh life. Until the day a stranger tells you you’re being hunted for the sins of a royal ancestor who died centuries before you were born.

You don’t believe him, until they come for you. Now you’re on the run.

Every answer you need lies in a past you chose to erase. The only thing you know for sure is that others are about to die and you need those memories back.

But first, you have to stay alive.

On The Writing Trail With Tosca

Tosca Lee image for guest post

  1. The Progeny is so fast-paced, filled with vibrant young characters, masquerade raves and so many costumes—it seems like it must have been fun to write!

It was super fun. I love bringing readers to new places, tugging them to the edge of their seats, and filling their minds with vivid, electric scenes.

It was also fun because my then-fiancé (now husband) and I had so many great   conversations about the story’s impossible situations as I wrote it and its sequel, Firstborn. These books represent such a great time in my life—getting engaged, married, and becoming an instant mom to four—that when I look back at them, I not only see the stories, but the events in my own life that unfolded during their writing.

  1. The story travels from the U.S. to several locations in Europe. Did you actually travel to all these places?

I did. I went to Hungary, Croatia, Vienna, Slovakia and Italy. Best of all, I got to take my mom with me. My mom and I have a history of globetrotting together, so it was a fun adventure to go tromping around through castle ruins and churches and city streets with her once again. And YOU can visit each of those places in the story with us as you read at: https://www.pinterest.com/toscalee/real-life-progeny/. (Boards for all my books can be found on Pinterest at www.pinterest.com/toscalee.)

  1. Is there anything funny/strange/interesting happen to you while doing research for the book?

Yes! The novel’s backstory is based on the real historical figure of Elizabeth Bathory, the most prolific female serial killer of all time… whom I learned I was distantly related to. (Ack!)

  1. Your books are enjoyed worldwide. How did you get started?

I was writing for a long time before I ever thought of it as a thing. As a young teen, I was an aspiring ballerina and spent my summers dancing out of state. When it became clear that it wasn’t going to pan out for me, I went off to college thinking I’d go into business school as my father did. But talking to Dad during a trip home my freshman year, I blurted out: “I’d really like to write a book.” My dad made me a deal: he’d pay me what I would have made that summer as a bank teller (which I was horrible at) if I’d devote myself to writing my first novel and treat it like a job. So I did. I never sold that book—it’s in the basement with the skeletons—but I sure learned a lot!

  1. What’s the coolest place you’ve been as part of your writing career?
  2. Tosca Lee image 2 for guest post

Israel. That was a big part of my research for my novel, Iscariot, but also highly significant to me personally.

But because I’m a nerd, I also have to say Comic-Con. 😀

  1. What are you working on now?

Another thrill ride coming this winter. Get ready to hold on to your hats!

The Center

No one speaks when you enter the Center for the last time. There’s no need. You’ve gone through the counseling, tests, and a checklist of preparations to get the plastic bracelet you wear the day of treatment. The one that saves a life. They don’t need to know why you’re doing it any more. Or that you lied about it all. Just the scratch of the stylus as you sign your name on the screen one last time.

A nurse takes me into a room and I lie down on the table. I give her the sealed packet—the only thing I brought with me. There’s cash, meds, and an address inside, the one for “after.” It’s a thousand miles away. She’ll pass it to the companion assigned to me. No point meeting her now.

I’m 21 years old and my name doesn’t matter because it’s about to be erased forever. I’m choosing to forget the ones I love, and myself, in the process.

They say your life flashes before your eyes when you die. But they don’t tell you that every detail comes screaming back to life. That you taste each bite of every meal you savored, feel the shower of every rain you walked in… smell the hair against your cheek before that last, parting kiss. That you will fight to hold on to every memory like a drowning person gasping for poisoned air.

Then everything you knew is gone. And you are still alive.

For now.

Bellamy

Breathing was something my body forgot how to do. An automatic action that suddenly became something so very complicated.

Liam,” I said, the word low and strained. It used up the very last bit of my oxygen.

His hands flexed again, still holding on to my arms.

That was the problem. The reason my lungs were burning and my sight was blurred. He was touching me.

I wrenched away, nearly tripping. He reached to steady me again, but I made a strangled sound, and he stopped.

The second there was some precious space between us, I sucked in a ragged breath. Then another.

“You’re here,” he rasped.

“You weren’t supposed to be.”

He smiled. Oh, why did he have to do that? The dimple in his chin appeared, and my knees started to shake.

Eight years. Even after eight years, he still reduced me to putty.

“Thought about me, did you?”

Every. Single. Day.

“Of course not.” I drew myself up, wrapping my arms around my body. Oh God, I looked a mess. I was dressed like a homeless person…

Oh God, I was a homeless person.

And I’d come here.

This was a very, very bad choice.

He stepped forward, and I took a step back. Liam frowned, and my eyes raked over his face, taking in his features, noting the way he’d changed over the years.

He was bigger now. So much bigger. His hair wasn’t as long as it used to be. Eight years ago, it was so long he could pull it into a short ponytail at the base of his neck. He said he liked it that way because it drove his father crazy. Now it was shorter on the sides but still long enough to run your fingers through.

His jaw was more chiseled. Light-colored hair filled it out, defined it even more. And his eyes.

Oh, his eyes.

Still the same stormy gray, the same depths I could get lost in for hours. They were wiser now. Almost more hawk-like, as if he could penetrate even my deepest of secrets with that stare.

The trembling in my knees moved to my hands. I stood there staring at him, unable to speak, looking like a homeless woman and trembling like a mouse caught out in the cold.

“Is your father with you?” he asked.

The words were like a knife right to my chest. I actually winced when he said them.

After my throat worked, I managed to reply. “Um, no. I’m alone.”

He frowned. He was starting to see something wasn’t right. He would know if I stood in front of him any longer.

There was something about Liam Mattison that managed to strip me bare.

I thought it had been because I was sixteen. But here I was at the age of twenty-four, and I knew it hadn’t been my age.

It was him.

“Ms. Lane,” the concierge spoke from somewhere behind. “I spoke to the manager, and I’m sorry, but there isn’t anything we can—”

I spun. “It’s okay!” I cut him off instantly, wishing I could have done it sooner.

“Manager?” Liam wondered from behind.

Of course he’d heard.

The man glanced behind me, his eyes widening a fraction.

“What’s this about a manager, Kenny?”

His eyes flickered to me, and I shook my head, begging him to shut up.

“Who runs this place?” Liam snapped.

I gasped. “You run BearPaw now?”

“Yes,” Liam replied with all the confidence in the world.

“What about your father?” Kenny wondered behind us.

“Why did you need a manager?” Liam asked, ignoring what he said.

“I… ah…” I began, then went for my bag I’d dropped on the floor. “I should be going.”

“Like hell,” Liam growled, grabbing my arm again. His hold was firm, but it didn’t hurt.

And damn if I stopped breathing again.

“Please don’t touch me.” I gasped.

Liam frowned but let go. “Stay,” he ordered.

Lydia sprinted out of the lounge, through the kitchen-dining room, out onto the back patio and down onto the grass in her socked feet. Her heart felt like it had multiplied in her chest and was hammering along with all its replicas out of sync. When she turned back to the face the house, she saw the girl standing in the upstairs window, looking down at her. A second later, she was gone.

She had left her cell phone and everything else inside. She had nothing to protect herself with, so she hurried to the tool shed near the garage to look for her gardening shears. When she couldn’t find them, she grabbed the garden rake instead and headed to the gate with it.

When she got there, she undid the latch and threw the gate open. But she had only taken a few steps into the road outside when she felt a sudden vertigo descend on her. Various planes of her vision shifted and an icy-sharpness cut across the surface of her skin. She staggered back to the gate and inside the compound of the house.

It took her some time before she could stand up straight. She looked back at the house with dread. The irony of her situation was not lost on her – that she could no sooner go inside feeling this way than she could leave the perimeter of the house without risking another kind of panic attack. She was pitifully stranded.

My Review

Gaelan returns from the war only to have to fight another one at home. Dumped by his girlfriend and disillusioned, his parent’s take him on a trip to boost him up. What happens next is straight out of a horror movie and Gaelan will stop at nothing to avenge the horrific death of his parents.

I’d suggest you set aside some time when you start this book. It hooks you quickly and you’ll find it hard to stop once you start. From horror to vengeance, it doesn’t let up.

Gaelan is a damaged man. Up against a foe that defies belief, he sets a course to get his revenge. I’m big on character driven stories and I think Gaelan’s journey to accept what he’s up against and use it to further his vengeance was my favorite part of the story. It kept me focused and eager to see how he put his experience to work and used things to his advantage.

I see this is the author’s debut novel. Sure doesn’t read like it. The writing is strong and the plot and character development are excellent.

A character study as much as a horror thriller, I was delighted by this first book and excited to know there will be more. If you enjoy a good thriller with some horror thrown in, along with some beasts that will give you the shivers, you ought to try this one.

About Author Thaddeus McGrath

Thaddeus McGrath is a former U.S. Marine Corps fighter/attack pilot, a veteran of the War on Terror and a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He has loved writing since he was a boy. His debut novel, Gaelan’s War, was inspired by a desire to continue the discussion about PTSD, and a love of all things supernatural. In his world, werewolves aren’t big dogs and vampires definitely don’t sparkle! He lives in Northern Virginia with his wife, kids, and oversized dogs.

My Review

The mystery of what happened to cause the death of a teenage girl cast a shadow over the town of Lilling. New evidence breathes life into the decades old cold case and brings together two detectives who still want to solve her murder. So much time has passed, will they be able to close the case? Or will the murderer continue to roam free?

I enjoy cold case plots and with so many character’s muddying the waters and the story being told from multiple perspectives, I wasn’t surprised that I had a hard time keeping track of who was who. All of them had tons of baggage and some had a motive to see the case solved or kept open. And you’re taken back in time to when the crime occurred and forward to the continued investigation and this I found engaging.

Maybe it was my mood at the time I was reading this, or it could be I didn’t grasp the relationships of some the characters, but I never fully engaged with them, and I need that to get pulled into a story. I lay the blame for that on my doorstep. The character’s were written in depth. Sure were some damaged psyche’s. I’d especially like to know more about Keene and Frohmann. I was intrigued by the bits of back story the author provided.

The writing was strong and I did love the twist the author gave in her ending.

Synopsis

Lilling might seem like an idyllic English village, but it’s home to a dark history. In 1976, a teenage girl named Annalise Wood disappeared, and though her body was later discovered, the culprit was never found. Decades later, Annalise maintains a perverse kind of celebrity, and is still the focus of grief, speculation, and for one young woman, a disturbing, escalating jealousy.

When DNA linked to the Annalise murder unexpectedly surfaces, cold case detective Morris Keene and his former partner, Chloe Frohmann, hope to finally bring closure to this traumatized community. But the new evidence instead undoes the case’s only certainty: the buried body that had long ago been confidently identified as Annalise may be someone else entirely, and instead of answers, the investigators face only new puzzles.

Whose body was unearthed all those years ago, and what happened to the real Annalise? Is someone interfering with the investigation? And is there a link to a present-day drowning with eerie connections? With piercing insight and shocking twists, Emily Winslow explores the dark side of sensationalized crime in this haunting psychological thriller.

From Chapter One

Annalise Williams (Wolfson College),
University Counselling Service,
recorded and transcribed by Dr. Laurie Ambrose

My mother picked the name Annalise for me because of a girl who was killed. Her name was Annalise Wood, and she went missing when she was sixteen. My mother was the same age when it happened. Annalise was lovely, much prettier than my sister and I ever became. She was the kind of girl you look at and think, “Of course someone would want to take her.”

Don’t look at me like that. I know that what happened to her was awful. It just seems a very fine line between being the kind of person that others want to be with and be like and treat well, and being the kind of person that some others, just a few, sick others, want to take for themselves. That’s the same kind of person, isn’t it? The loved and lovely. Isn’t that from a poem somewhere? That’s what she was like. That’s the risk when you’re the kind of person who’s wanted. Good people want to be close to you, but the bad people want you too.

There were two photos of her that the media used most: her most recent school portrait, and a snapshot of her laughing, with the friends on either side cropped out. Taken together, they presented the two sides of a beautiful and perfect person: poised and thoughtful, and spontaneous and bubbly. The kind of person who deserves help and attention.

Realistically, if they wanted these pictures to help strangers identify her if they saw her out and about with the bad man, they should have used photos of her frowning or looking frightened. Either there weren’t any (which may well be the case; who would take a photo of that?), or they couldn’t bring themselves to advertise a version of her that was less than appealing. The narrative is important. If you want the “general public” to get worked up, you have to persuade. Attractiveness and innocence must be communicated, even if emphasising those traits makes the real person harder to recognise.

In the end, she was already dead, so it’s a good thing, I suppose, that they used the nice photos. They’re the images that everyone remembers. My mum was a teenager when those pictures were in the paper every day for weeks, then weekly for months. Annalise Wood was the most beautiful girl in the world. Everyone cared about her. It’s what any mother would wish for her child, to be the kind of person that everyone would care about and miss if she disappeared.

It wasn’t until Mum was over thirty that what really happened to Annalise Wood was discovered.

Author Kristen Banet

Kristen Banet has a Diet Coke problem and smokes too much. She curses like a sailor (though, she used to be one, so she uses that as an excuse) and finds that many people don’t know how to handle that. She loves to read, and before finally sitting to try her hand at writing, she had your normal kind of work history. From tattoo parlors, to the U.S. Navy, and freelance illustration, she’s stumbled through her adult years and somehow, is still kicking.
She loves to read books that make people cry. She likes to write books that make people cry (and she wants to hear about it). She’s a firm believer that nothing and no one in this world is perfect, and she enjoys exploring those imperfections—trying to make the characters seem real on the page and not just in her head.
She might just be crazy, though. Her characters think so, but this can’t be confirmed.

Check out her social media to catch what’s going on in the worlds inside her head. She drops teasers, new covers, and opens ARC reader slots through her Facebook group, The Banet Pride.
