On a Wing and a Dare

goodreads-badge-add-plus

In Tremeirchson, a barn leader’s children are expected to follow their parents into the sky, becoming riders of the magnificent winged horses that are the medieval Welsh village’s legacy. Neither Emma nor Davyd, however, want to follow that tradition.

Sixteen-year-old Emma risks losing her family by following her heart. Eager to take her place in the air, she longs to ride a forbidden winged colt born in barn of her father’s biggest rival. She also dreams of the rival’s sons, not sure which she truly loves. Bold and exciting, Evan will someday lead his father’s barn. Davyd is quieter, more dependable, with an ability to get things done. Her father disapproves of both boys and pushes her toward an ambitious newcomer. He also insists she ride the colt he’s picked for her.

Davyd, also sixteen, is plagued with a secret—he is afraid of heights. Refusing to become a rider means public humiliation, his parents’ disappointment, and lifelong ridicule from his brother, Evan. He reluctantly prepares to join his family aloft in the Aerial Games that provide the entire village with its livelihood and tries desperately to think of an alternative.

As Tremeirchson’s barns prepare for the Rider Ceremony, winged horses suddenly start dying. Shocked, the adults hesitate, mired in tradition and politics. Is it a disease or poison? Accidental or purposeful? Someone must discover the answer and act before all the winged horses in the world are gone forever.

And check out book two!

In the Winds of Danger (Flying Horse Books #2)

goodreads-badge-add-plus

This is a sequel to ON A WING AND A DARE, but it’s not necessary to read them in order.

Nineteen year old Nia is shocked when she is secretly offered the leadership of Third Barn. This new barn full of flying horses will need someone confident, experienced, and innovative, so why are both warring factions pursuing an untried girl? Suspicious that both sides want a puppet instead of a leader, Nia races to discover their secrets before making the biggest decision of her life.

Some of those secrets are unknowingly buried in the disconnected memories of a young groom named Owain. Terror and guilt haunt Owain’s dreams – and then a face from his nightmare arrives in High Meadow. Owain looks for answers in his past and uncovers a dangerous plot that could doom High Meadow’s future. How can he foil the plot and save his people as well as the winged horses?

So what do you think? Want to ride a winged horse? I do!!

The cover art for this story is perfect. You know you’re in for a fun adventure before you even crack the book.

And now it’s time for my review of Eternal Island, Book One in The Eternal Series. This series is written by Ella Medler and Kristie S. Haigwood.

Eternal Island (Book 1 in the Eternal Series)

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Eternal Island – A place where vampires rule, witches play, danger lurks and dreams really do come true.

This arrogant, been there – done that, vampire thinks he’s seen it all and done it all. That is until he gazes into Rainey’s crystal ball.

She warned him, this is your one and only chance at love, at finding your soul-mate. Make sure you want this before you gaze upon her. There’ll be no going back. Your heart won’t allow it.

Abe doesn’t take her seriously. Rainey is his personal psychic witch. She’s been forecasting his future for a long time and never once has it been about anything good. So why should this be any different.

Then he gazes upon Ariana’s face. If his heart was still beating, it would explode from his chest. He’s stunned by the rush of feelings he’s having. He has to have her, can’t stand a second more without her. Now he understands Rainey’s warning. She’s right, there’s no going back.

Per Abe’s demand, Rainey goes to get Ariana and bring her back to the island.

Ariana has been in a coma for many weeks. Not able to cope with the news of her husband’s death, she fainted and never woke up.

She’s been moved to a mental hospital as she shows no signs of waking. Rainey arrives and uses her witchy powers to get past the staff and enters Ariana’s room. She sprinkles some powder on her face and waits.

Ariana awakens, at first confused. Where is she, why is she here and who is this stranger?

As Rainey pitches her mysterious promise of a new life, a new beginning on a magical island, Ariana is persuaded to go. Perhaps because of her painful memories, she accepts that the island is real.

I can tell you this, I had so much fun reading Eternal Island. The cast of characters couldn’t be better and I laughed, hard!

Abe is the High Vampire, the big kahuna of the island. A long time ago a vampire discovered the island and invited others to come there to escape the slayers. When witches were being burned, drowned, and hanged, the vampire invited them to the island also. It was mutually beneficial. The witches watched out for the vamps during the day and the vamps protected the witches by night. And the witches cast a spell to keep the island hidden.

This is a great premise. A secret island, witches and vamps working together!

Abe is a stickler for rules and suffers no nonsense. It’s hard for him to be so unsure of himself now that he’s found love. Upon knowing he’s about to come face to face with Ariana – “I love her and I’ve never even heard her voice. Do you know how that makes me feel? Vulnerable! I feel weak.”

I like when a vampire and a human fall in love. All through the story I’m wondering, will he want to change her, will she want to be changed? Keeps the mystery flowing.

Rainey is a psychic witch and has to make sure Abe doesn’t rush things and scare Ariana off. She needn’t have worried. Once Ariana gazes into Abe’s eyes, she’s enamored.

Her roommate Becky catches on quickly and thinks Ariana does protest too much.

“It’s not what you think, Becky. Honestly.” Becky made a face and stared back unblinking. “Okay, there’s no point in arguing with you anyway, is there?”

“Nope, I always win.”

A fact I liked: He enjoyed drinking alcohol for the simple reason that it was something different. A human doesn’t like to only eat pizza or cheeseburgers all the time and the same applied to Abe’s kind. Blood, although necessary to stay alive, got old, boring, after a while. His favorite drink was Jack Daniels, or an AB Negative girl.

Yikes! I’m AB Negative!

This part written about Abe made me crack up: Abe had been lying in bed for hours trying to count those damn sheep. Three hours later he decided to start shooting the sheep.

The book is full of fun, laugh out loud, moments. But there is also some yummy romance and a slew of characters, good and evil.

One vamp wants another one dead. The other vamp wants said vamp dead. Who will get who first?

Will Abe and Ariana finally be together?

Will Rainey see the mysterious Kade again?

Will Jonah stay out of trouble? Not likely!

There’s hi-jinx, romance and intrigue in Eternal Island. With so much going on, there’s never a dull moment.

If I was invited, I wouldn’t hesitate to visit! Five Stars for Eternal Island! I want more.

Now let’s hear from Ella and Kristie. They’re here to tell us how they met and how they became co-authors. Enjoy!

E: I’d been reading and reviewing indie books for a while, and in April last year I tripped over Kristie on twitter, or maybe facebook – one or the other. I offered to read and review Save My Soul for her. What a story! That book stood out head and shoulders above the rest. There were so many twists and turns, and Kristie has such a way to make you love her characters – I fell in love with pretty much every single one. Then I edited Forbidden Touch for her. Another winner. It’s so much easier to edit something you enjoy reading. And so our friendship blossomed. Kristie is such fun to talk to. I love her sense of humour.

K: Ella’s right, we met first on twitter, but with as broad as the twitterverse is, I didn’t realize we were already connected until Ella offered to review Save My Soul in one of the groups we are both members of on facebook. In turn, I read and reviewed her Martin Little, Resurrected (Loved it! Can’t wait for the sequel. She really has a way with humor and sarcasm, and those are two of my favorite tools I use in writing, as well). I was extremely surprised when I realized that the sequel wouldn’t be coming out for a while, that a thriller would be coming out first. WHAT? Okay, I’m not big on thrillers, but her first book was written so well, and she had edited and loved Forbidden Touch so much, that I had to give it a try. If I didn’t like it, I could just keep my mouth shut, right? Well, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut, because her voice in the novel made me look at thrillers in a whole new light. It got 5 stars from me, and I am anxious to get my hands on the next Hunter book. My, my, I am long-winded, what direction should I be taking this? Oh, right, Eternal Island. I wrote 3 of the epic Eternal novels two years before I even met Ella. They had been collecting dust, but they needed so much work to be publish worthy, that I stuck them on the back burner until I had a chance to get back to them, but with so many ideas for new novels crowding my head, I feared it would never happen. A thought came to me while driving one day, and I had to pull over so I could write her the email right then. I never even questioned it or thought that it wouldn’t work. I asked Ella to visit Eternal Island and see if she could work with me to make it any better. It is definitely a story that needs to be heard.

E: Yes, it was all Kristie’s idea. I was… well… surprised to say the least. I’d read good and bad things about co-authoring, but they all fizzled out of my mind simply because I felt so close to Kristie. I know we live thousands of miles apart, but in our hearts we feel as if we’ve lived our whole lives together, like sisters. Isn’t that right, Kristie?

K: Sisters? Yes, we are. If not by blood, then by souls. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that we could make it work. 99.9% of the time our minds are on the same track and page. We… finish each other’s thoughts. “Why didn’t I think of that?” was said several times by the both of us.

E: I read the material as it was and loved it. I loved the idea of an island of the freaks, so to speak, a current-day kingdom with its own king and set of rules, and a down-to-earth approach to living in harmony with each other. Actually, a lot of so-called developed country governments would do well to read Eternal Island. That’s an idea. Shall we gift them some copies, Kristie?

K: That is the best idea I’ve ever heard, Ella. The planet would be so much better with the simple, yet strict, rules that the vampires set on Eternal Island. I would pack my bags and leave today if I could live there. It’s my dream escape, and I allow myself to visit every day.

E: I started working on Eternal Island, fitting it in amongst editing jobs, but then got interrupted by a holiday (I would have kept going but my family threatened to take away my laptop, and I wasn’t prepared to lose that!). I went back to work after my return and, helped by some delays in receiving some manuscripts for editing, got it finished at the beginning of September. Or so I thought. Kristie went back over it and made more changes, and then it came back to me, and back to Kristie – can’t remember quite how many goes we had to get it straight, but it was worth it. I don’t remember ever having so much fun playing with scenarios, thinking up smart retorts and working out which character should react which way. I firmly believe in strong, well-developed characters, and Kristie’s characterization is very good, so we had a good common point there.

K: I love my characters, even the secondary ones, so I made it a point to make them all as real as possible. Each of them have their quirks and problems, and each of them are unique in their own special way. I would say Jonah is my favorite to write, because he is so care-free and full of life. He loves being a vampire and he loves women and the chase to get them… all. lol. Which is your favorite, Ella? I think I might already know the answer, though. =D

E: I absolutely love Abe. He’s so clueless to start with. I can just visualize giving him a hug. And Jonah has got to be a close second. But… you know the last scene in the book? Get ready for some competition in the affection stakes. 😉

K: Oh, I know who you’re talking about. Lips are sealed. He is quite yummy, but I don’t want to spoil it for our readers. They must dig in and find out for themselves. 😉

E: I have to say there were a couple of scenes that stretched me. I only wrote satire and action thrillers before this one, and while there are a few action scenes in Eternal Island – and the pace is relentless, just as I like it (read it and you’ll see) – I never before had to get a… hmm… romantic scene right. Stop giggling, Kristie.

K: he he he he he Sorry. I can’t help it. You are so good at writing romance, I don’t know why you never tried it before. It all came natural to you. Flexible? I think so. You made the love scene, as well as all the other scenes better, and I don’t think I could have picked a better author to work with. You make magic happen. Mwah!

E: Stop that! You’re making me blush. There are a lot of awesome scenes in this story. Still, I think Eternal Immortality is going to be better. I feel it in my bones.

K: Right you are there, Ella. The cover says so much about the story, but still leaves the reader wondering what is beyond the door. Well, they will have to turn the pages to find out. Eternal Immortality ties up the loose ends of Eternal Island and lets other threads fray for Eternal Inception, book 3 of the Eternal series (Coming in the Fall, y’all!)

E: So, I guess what we’d like to say, in conclusion, is that if you feel it in your heart, if you’re comfortable with your on-line friends and have an awesome idea for a book, don’t let the miles get in the way. Writing a book together is easier than you think. If anything, it’s more fun, and there’s a better chance to keep each other going, no matter what else is going on in the world. I can’t wait to get back to work on the next book, and the next one, and the one after that, and so on.

K: Yep, you said it all! Thanks for having us, Laura. Sorry we didn’t let you talk much. We forget about the world around us when we get chatting. Thank you all so much for dropping in. I hope Eternal Island is a place you’d like to visit now. It’s a never ending story. It’s ETERNAL.

You ladies are awesome. I didn’t need to say a thing. Thanks you so much for stopping by.

I live in Cornwall with my husband and our two teenage daughters. Together, we care for a large assortment of pets, some small enough to fit in a fish tank, and some capable of causing you significant injury on impact. I was born in Transylvania but got chucked out due to my inability to grow fangs and reluctance to sleep in coffins.

My first book, MARTIN LITTLE, RESURRECTED is a lighthearted fantasy novel full of action and unique takes on life. It’s total escapism. Heartened by positive reviews on my first book, I published BLOOD IS HEAVIER, an action thriller, which is an explosive and emotional struggle to save a father’s most treasured possession. ETERNAL ISLAND, a paranormal romance, is now live. I have co-written it with a brilliant American author, Kristie S. Haigwood. My next release is book two in the Hunter Series, BLOOD IS POWER, which should be out before the end of the year. In the pipeline are sequels for all of the above and a spin-off from Blood is Heavier – Tequila’s story.

Realizing Triss’s ancestors have been seduced for centuries by the dark side, Triss and Logan must ensure no more in their world fall victim to the realm of Altered Souls, even if that means ending the ones they love.

Altered Souls excerpt.

As our lips met, the search for our security began. Neither of us wanted to believe that we could lose this. Running my fingers through his hair, I gripped his neck with my other hand. I didn’t want this closeness to end. The firmness of his body stretched along mine as he lifted me into his arms. I wrapped my legs around his waist, not wanting to detach from his kisses as they led away from my mouth down my neck. Feeling his breath dance across my skin as he kissed my collarbone brought a shivery delight to my senses. The softness of his lips was such a contrast to the firmness of his grasp as he guided his hands down my back.

He spun around, pinning me up against the tree with his weight, as I let my mind wander to what might be waiting for me next. My breathing got faster with each second of anticipation. He slowly brought my chin up and his lips began exploring mine once more. With every kiss, his mouth pressed harder along mine, and my heart exploded with curiosity. I let my hands find their way back to his neck up to his hair, twisting and pulling him closer to me with all of my strength.

He pulled away slightly, and I opened my eyes to see him searching my expression for something. For what, I wasn’t sure.

“I don’t ever want to lose you, Triss.” Logan shook his head. “I couldn’t—”

“Shh.” I placed my index finger to his lips. “You won’t.”

My hand trailed down his chest to the first button that I attempted to unfasten.

Here’s some information about Lonely Souls, The Witch Avenue Series, Book #1

Lonely Souls (The Witch Avenue, #1)

It’s two weeks before Triss turns 18, and her world is about to change into the most magical one imaginable as she readies herself to enter The Witch Avenue Order… that is until her mother’s disappearance.  Instead of celebrating her transformation, she finds herself spreading rose petals into her mother’s empty grave.

When Logan, her best friend from junior high, moves back to town for college, he vows to help her find the answers she so desperately seeks surrounding her mother’s disappearance.  As they begin uncovering clues, it becomes apparent that the life of white magic they both grew up loving is not what the majority practices, and their lives are in danger.

With a haunting feeling that her mother may still be alive, she begins to hear a call to the wilderness.  Triss realizes that in order to find the answers she needs, she must learn the ways of her ancestors and become the hunter, not the hunted before it’s too late, and she becomes part of the lonely souls.

Glory Alley and the Star Riders (The Glory Alley Series, #1)

Here’s my tease!

According to legend, Wybbils are small hairy creatures who live deep underground in caves. Ancient people both feared and venerated them.  It is said that Wybbils leave their tunnels at night to snatch Tullahn children from their beds and bring them to their lair.

When I spotted this cover art, I knew I had to read this. Sometimes an image will catch my eye and stay with me. I try not to read the excerpt for the book before I review it, but I do recall that this cover art was complimentary of the story within. That is very important to me. I have difficulty giving a good rating if the story and cover do not match. Check this out!

Storm of Arranon

Some people may think this is too busy. I think it is beautiful. I love the lettering and the way her eyes shimmer. The wolves eyes are like christmas ornaments. And the picture of this girl represents Erynn perfectly.

Before my review I have something great to tell you.  R.E. Sheahan is stopping in for an interview and she has offered 3 signed paperbacks with three signed posters for me to giveaway. Read my review and interview and enter for your chance to win this novel at the end of the post. Just look for the planets at the bottom!

Enter the world of Arranon

The story takes place in the future. The daughter of a famous general, Erynn is in training to be an interceptor fighter pilot. A sudden betrayal reveals an alien species has infiltrated the government at its highest levels. They want to harvest the planets of Korin and Arranon for their resources, which means total annihilation. With betrayal everywhere Erynn and her friends are not sure who to trust anymore.

Forced to flee Korin and seek safety on Arranon, Erynn learns about the mystery of her origins and her ability of Prophesy. She  begins to understand her connection to the planet. A secret forced upon her since childhood may hold the key to saving both planet if only she can unlock it in time.

What an adventure!  It is fantasy and science fiction all rolled up in one.

I really enjoyed reading Storm of Arranon. All of the characters are well-developed and understandable and the world building is almost visual without being too complicated and overshadowing the plot.

Erynn’s connection to the animals on Arranon was fun to read. I kept trying to envision what a Capora looked like – maybe a cross between a yak and a horse? And the Maejen, maybe a giant species of timber wolf?

R.E. Sheahan does a superb job of world building. She shows you the planets, their inhabitants and their cities, revealing an earnest desire for you to easily understand and enter these worlds.

If you have seen Avatar and remember how the flora and fauna all glowed with iridescent, brilliant colors, that is how I picture the Anim Blath.

They are alive, sentient, and they speak to Erynn, sing to her. Like the living voice of Arranon.

There is a budding romance between Jaer and Erynn, but the author kept it in its place. It was not the focal point of the plot but did add to my interest.

Storm of Arranon has magic, action, good and evil, friendship and romance, with an out of this world flavor. I think young readers and adults will enjoy this story.  So well written, I was surprised that this was R.E. Sheahan’s debut novel. This story can stand alone and the ending is very satisfying. I am happy to hear there will be more. A great beginning to a series.

Loved it! I highly recommend it.

Now let’s get to know R.E. Sheahan shall we!

Hi Robynn. Thank you for stopping in to answer a few questions. Please start by telling us about yourself.

Thank you, Laura, for this opportunity to connect with your readers.

Hmmm, about me, well, I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I love books and reading. For me, bookstores are a bit like drug dealers whose highs are legal.

A few years ago while working as a Firefighter/Paramedic in Northern California, where, by the way, I read at least three books a week, I decided to try writing.

I moved to Oregon, changed my career to rancher and during my free time, usually in the wee hours waiting for a lamb to be born, I worked on my books. Yes, there are multiple ideas, all waiting their turn.

About four years ago, one particular character and her worlds demanded I devote more time to their story. So two re-writes, countless critique sessions, and a huge jump in my learning curve later, Storm of Arranon was born.

I would list your book as YA Fantasy/Science Fiction. What genre do you list Storm of Arranon as and where did you get the inspiration to write this story?

Yes, I would definitely list Storm of Arranon as YA Fantasy/Science Fiction, although many adults seem to enjoy the story, also.

As for the inspiration, okay, don’t laugh. Star Wars. I loved Luke’s innocence, his growth as a person and a Jedi through his adventures. Luke never backed down no matter how bad the situation.

The ‘what if’s’ started and in a very round about, convoluted way, Erynn and her two worlds came into being. The other characters arrived, adding their voices and suggestions, and, with the help of critique groups, I believed I had a story worth printing.

I’ve been wondering. How do you go about building a world and how do you choose names for places and species that don’t exist?

World building, well, sometimes situations, places, and the inhabitants of these worlds, come to me in dreams. Often I just look at my surroundings and wonder, what if? I know, there’s that ‘what if’ again. Imagination. Mine was never restrained, even as a kid, and my parents encouraged this in me.

Naming my creations has been great fun. I’ll share a little secret here. I have an extensive Gaelic dictionary and I will use a translation, but with letters added, dropped, or changed. Hey, with a last name like Sheahan, what would you expect?

What is the hardest part of your writing process and do you have a routine you follow?

The hardest part of a book is the first page, the first paragraph, that first line. It’s so important.

I like routine, but for writing, I pretty much go where my thoughts take me, which tend to be linear. Sometimes there is no choice, though. When the characters are talking, it’s time to get what they’re saying down. This has happened often at four in the morning.

My usual writing process is to take a scene, the setting, the characters, and begin like I’m watching a movie in my mind. (Note: I imagine my characters with actual actor’s faces along with their personalities.) If I don’t like where the dialog is going, I rewind and direct the scene in a different way. I may ‘watch’ the same scene over and over again, until I am happy with what I ‘see, feel, hear, taste, and smell,’ on that virtual sheet of white paper.

Is there a favorite place you like to write?

In the summer, I would sit at the kitchen island. In the adjoining family room cartoons, (frequently Star Wars -The Clone Wars), were on TV and Parker would be sitting with his Legos asking questions every few minutes. I got more work done during those times than when I was alone, in a silent room. So now, I make sure to have something playing in the background. I especially like old- I Love Lucy re-runs.

Who are some of the authors that inspired you?

Dean Koontz, for his descriptions. I felt like I was right there with Christopher Snow, or Odd Thomas. That and the dog never dies in his books!

Nelson DeMille for his intricacies in weaving a complex plot. Wow!

Sue Grafton for her realistic and flawed character, Kinsey Milhoune. She gets herself into so much trouble! I like that in a protagonist.

What are you reading now and what is one book you would recommend?

I have three books going right now.

Dragon Gem By Brian Beam

Symphony of Dreams by Cynthia Rogan

The Watchers by Russell Turney

And, yes, I can keep them straight.

Book recommendations are so subjective. What I love, someone else may not enjoy. But here goes. And sorry, but it’s two books.

Fear Nothing and Seize the Night. The Christopher Snow stories by Dean Koontz.

Is there anything you would like to share with us?

I’m actually quite shy so publishing my book was difficult. A book is such a personal journey and an insight into the author. Well, it is for me anyway.

Let’s do a few fun ones, shall we?

If you could do anything (except write), what would you do?

Good question. I’ve driven fire engines and ambulances code three, run into burning buildings, and saved a few lives. That’s kinda hard to top. I’ve worked on a ranch and helped many a newborn lamb or calf into the world. Very rewarding. I’ve trained dogs, Border Collies, to work livestock. I love dogs!

I think if I could do anything, I’d be a veterinarian.

What is your favorite junk food?

WooHoo! Cupcakes!

Where would you choose to go on vacation if you could go anywhere?

That’s easy. Ireland.

Imagine space travel is a common thing now. Would you go if you knew you would be gone for a long time?

In a heartbeat.

Do you believe in aliens and would you like to meet one?

I would love to meet an alien. In fact, I’m sure I already have.

That was a lot of fun. Thanks for the great interview and for allowing me to host this awesome giveaway!
