Title: Skeleton & Dust
Series: The Ferryman + The Flame #0.5
By: Rhiannon Paille
Expected Publication: October 1st, 2013
Blurb
In the First Era, before Kaliel and Krishani fell in love, Tor runs. He escapes the Land of Kings and the tyrannical Valtanyana. In the depths of Tempia he forges weapons– The Flames– strong enough to oppose the Kings he betrayed.
Aria, The Amethyst Flame, cannot touch the living or the dead and her kin are silent ghosts. Hidden in a cairn deep in the haunted forest, Aria becomes obsessed with the Ferryman, the only boy who can feel her touch.
Before Aria knows it, The Flames, The Ferryman and Tor are swept up in the first war against the Valtanyana.
~~~~
My Review
The villagers of Tempia know little about the gray skinned man who washed in from the sea.
Tor liked it that way. The less they knew about who or what he was, the safer they’d be.
But now the star cloud, its emerald and green mass edged in gold, is looming ever larger, ever closer, bringing war to the village.
Tor must face the enemy inside, the Valtanyana ,or the village and Desaunius, his soul mate, will be destroyed.
The Voltanyana want Tor. His power will make them strong enough to rule the world, and they won’t take no for an answer.
I am a people person. I like plenty of characters to connect with.
While I liked Tor and Desaunius and would like to read more about them, the true stars in this story, for me anyway, were Aria and the Ferryman, Kallow.
Her being the Amethyst Flame, a weapon and something more, and him being the Ferryman, the usher of spirits, got my curiosity revving up.
I wanted to know more about them. What are they, really? Are they good or evil? Why can Kallow feel Aria when no one else can?
Yep, they stole the show for me.
I would have liked to be a fly on the wall, watching when Tor absorbed the dust and called for the weapons, the flames, from the volcano’s magma. That would’ve been something to see. Especially when he got something he didn’t ask for.
I’ve had my eye on this series and now that I’ve sampled it, I’ve got a craving for more of this world and it’s many diverse characters. You can bet I’ll be reading the other books.
They train and study every day to prepare themselves for an immense responsibility, to lead humankind back from the brink of extinction.
At least, that’s what they’ve been told.
Among the thirty-six is Jacey, 17, one of four Scions in the Eagle class. She is the favorite of the 93-year-old headmaster, Dr. Carlhagen. Synopsis
Surah Stormsong’s life has fallen down around her in the past week. Her father is in a coma induced by demon poison, two Highborn Sorceresses have been murdered, and a crazed Sorcerer by the name of Black Heart has made it his mission to take the kingdom for his own. As princess, and next in line to the throne, Surah is his primary target. But he’s not the only one she has to look out for. Now, Surah is on the run, having just helped Charlie Redmine escape from the castle dungeons. This makes her a traitor in the eyes of many, as Charlie is not only a common man suspected of murder and treason, but also Black Heart’s younger brother. The stars are crossed against the two lovers, the universe trying to keep them apart. In the end, will the stars align for Surah and Charlie, or will they fall from the heavens, dead and lifeless, like the tears of angels?
My Review
H.D. has done it again!
I’ve read her Alexa Montgomery Saga, every one, and just like with them, this series just keeps getting better.
I loved Shooting Stars, just loved it. Now that I’ve read Falling Stars, I’ll tell you, it’s so much better. Not to say the first book wasn’t awesome, but with each book, H.D. ups her standards and rises above it every time.
This book grabs hold of you with the first sentence and never lets you go.
My favorite books are character driven and the stars of the Surah Stormsong Series are incredible.
Surah is wonderful. She’s smart yet impulsive, self-confident yet vulnerable, scared yet double-tough. And Charlie has her acting all girlie.
“…this man, just had a way of making her feel like a silly teenager, which was ridiculous considering she was older than most creatures on Earth. For the first time in a very long time, she felt as young as she looked, which was no older than twenty.”
I had such a great time getting to know Surah better. Wait until you read how she cleans house. Wish I could do that.
Charlie. Charlie is delectable. Sexy and sardonic, confident,and shy. How could I not love Charlie. What worries Charlie, worries me too. Will Surah still feel the same about him when she learns his secret. A secret that will shoot straight to her heart?
“The Charlie Effect.”
Another thing H.D. does really well is the romance. This is the second book and Surah and Charlie are slowly falling in love. It’s not instant love but a fondness built on getting to know each other. That makes it much more fun to read. You want them to finally say it, to admit their feelings, and that keeps you pouring over the words, looking for it.
Then there’s Black Heart, Charlie’s brother. He goes deeper into his lust for revenge and is hooked up with Tristell, the Fae Queen. Boy, what a twisted affair that is. Neither one shows any feelings for others. That makes them the perfect diabolical companions.
Follow one of their conversations if you can.
“Michael is always thinking inside of boxes,” she said.
He sighed, “And Tristell is always speaking in riddles.”
I can’t forget Samson, Surah’s tiger. He’s been left behind at the castle while Surah and Charlie are on the run and he’s being very sneaky, staying in the shadows, watching and listening as sorcerers whisper and conspire in dark places. I love reading his thoughts. He’s almost human sometimes, then his tiger side comes through. Wouldn’t want to be on his bad side.
There are some wicked creatures and extreme action in this story. I wouldn’t expect anything less from H.D. Her fight scenes are almost graceful when described. You can practically see the action, feel it, and hear it. Just like her characters, it’s all so real.
Some scenes remind you that Charlie and Surah both can be cold-blooded and it chills you when they exact punishment. And at some points in the story you almost can’t discern their individual voices. That’s how well this is written. You begin to understand how similar these two are, how they think alike, how well they go together, like soul-mates.
“I can only breathe right when you’re breathing beside me.”
Most excellent writing.
As the story races to the finish, you wonder how anything can be alright, how anything good can happen. Each time you think it’s going okay, something goes horribly wrong, taking you in another direction. I felt as Surah so eloquently put it,
“However this ends, wherever this is going, it’s going to effect a lot of people. Innocent people. I can feel that in my blood…I just hope whatever role I play isn’t one that causes heartache and pain.”
There’s so much more I want to tell you. I have nine pages of notes. But I’m going to let you read this super awesome story and find out for yourself.
One more thing. Watch out for the ending. It will rip you up one side and down the other. This ain’t over.
Prepare to be enthralled. I was and still am.
“Keeper of Reign”
By: Emma Right
Book Description:
Books written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it?
For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema.
Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn’t get himself killed first.
Here’s a peek inside Keeper of Reign
Ralston said, “How’d Gehzurolle even know we’re Keepers? We were always so careful not to tell anyone.”
Jules looked over his shoulders. “Gehzurolle’s not supposed to be omniscient, but his spies lurk everywhere.”
“You mean the Scorpents?”
Jules lowered his voice. “Not just. Could be Handoverans, or Elfies who’ve been bought with a price. Then there’re three others. One looks like a red flame and his name is Rage. It‘s hard to notice him, especially during a fire, although some have seen him and lived!”
“So, he’s in charge of fire?”
“Rage lives up to his name. He’s in charge of anger. That’s what Grandpa said.”
“Who else?”
“Another resembles smoke: name is Whisperer. He whispers things in the air to influence people or the weather or such. He gives them suggestions. And the third is Sekt: he’s rumored to roam in fogs and mists, but he hides well and not much is known of him. Gehzurolle’ll do anything to make trouble for us. He can even manipulate birds for his end.”
“Birds?” Ralston made a face.
“Not all kinds. Prey birds. That’s why I think Gehzurolle’s involved. Our raven attack seemed too coincidental, especially with this.” He swept his arm about. “Did you hear anything last night?”
“Besides your snoring?”
In the Winds of Danger, Book #2
Synopsis
Nineteen year old Nia is shocked when she is secretly offered the leadership of Third
Barn. This new barn full of flying horses will need someone confident, experienced, and
innovative, so why are both warring factions pursuing an untried girl? Suspicious that
both sides want a puppet instead of a leader, Nia races to discover their secrets before
making the biggest decision of her life.
Some of those secrets are unknowingly buried in the disconnected memories of a young
groom named Owain. Terror and guilt haunt Owain’s dreams – and then a face from his
nightmare arrives in High Meadow. Owain looks for answers in his past and uncovers a
dangerous plot that could doom High Meadow’s future. How can he foil the plot and save
his people as well as the winged horses?
~~~~
Excerpt
As if choreographed, the First Barn mare and the Second Barn stallion converged on each
other. Eira’s upswept wing hid the other horse, then revealed him on the downbeat. Nia gripped
her mare with her legs and leaned forward, anticipating impact. She forced her eyes away from
Catrin’s approaching lance, focusing instead on the other rider’s armored torso. The horses’
wings beat in unison, down at the same time. Now! Nia’s lance struck somewhere near her
opponent’s shoulder and slipped off her armor. Meanwhile, Catrin’s lance connected with Nia’s
left shoulder, great pain accompanying the sound of the wooden lance thunking against armor.
The impact jerked Nia back, the restraining straps tightening against her legs, straining to hold
her in place as Nia fought against the weight of her armor to regain her balance in the saddle.
Eira’s wingstrokes broke rhythm as the weight on her back shifted. Panic roared inside Nia’s
helmet like the most violent storm, to be replaced by fury as she regained her balance. Eira
resumed the powerful wingstrokes that kept her aloft, and Nia patted the now-sweaty neck.
Fighting the urge to clap a hand to her injured shoulder, Nia struggled to maintain her hold
on the lance, now dipping and swaying above Eira’s head as if it had a mind of its own. The
mare flattened her ears against her head, and her neck stretched out straight in front of her.
Miraculously, the powerful wings beat cleanly as the mare swept past the other horse, feathers
brushing his tail.
Nia got the lance stabilized into its upright holding position and clutched it with her right
hand. Left shoulder throbbing, she guided Eira to the ground in front of First Barn. The mare
landed harder than usual, no doubt due to the extra weight she carried, and jarred Nia’s shoulder.
The pain inflamed her anger. Her left hand, freed of the reins, clasped her amulet. She hoped
serenity would flow into her from the necklace.
Catrin circled in to land at Second Barn as Tristan hurried toward Nia. “What happened? You
were supposed to go three passes!” he shouted up to her.
He was her barn leader, so tall she had to look up at him from her five foot height when
she was on the ground. Seven years older than her own seventeen years, Tristan sometimes
seemed younger. His blond hair was always neatly combed, but his dark eyes were charged with
emotion. If she ever wanted to know how Tristan felt about something, she read his eyes instead
of listening to his words. Right now he was angry. Well, so was she.

My Review
The characters from On a Wing and a Dare return in this next book in the Flying Horse Trilogy, along with some new ones you’ll want to get to know.
The situations are more mature as the characters have grown and the suspense and intrigue are palpable.
I was eagerly turning the pages, flying(pardon the pun) through this book, eager to return to the air with these magnificent winged steeds, and to meet and come to know the new cast of characters and the challenges they face.
The aerial sequences are so vividly written, I was once again pulled into the skies, feeling the wind stream past my face and whistling in my ears. A good thing I don’t have vertigo!
I seemed to connect more with the previous and new characters in this follow-up book. The story reads like it’s written for a more mature reader, not so much for middle grade. I suspect that’s because the story should mature as the characters do.
I’m deep into this series now and anticipate a grand finale in the final book of this trilogy.

On a Wing and a Dare, Book #1
Synopsis
In Tremeirchson, a barn leader’s children are expected to follow their parents into the sky, becoming riders of the magnificent winged horses that are the medieval Welsh village’s legacy. Neither Emma nor Davyd, however, want to follow that tradition.
Sixteen-year-old Emma risks losing her family by following her heart. Eager to take her place in the air, she longs to ride a forbidden winged colt born in barn of her father’s biggest rival. She also dreams of the rival’s sons, not sure which she truly loves. Bold and exciting, Evan will someday lead his father’s barn. Davyd is quieter, more dependable, with an ability to get things done. Her father disapproves of both boys and pushes her toward an ambitious newcomer. He also insists she ride the colt he’s picked for her.
Davyd, also sixteen, is plagued with a secret—he is afraid of heights. Refusing to become a rider means public humiliation, his parents’ disappointment, and lifelong ridicule from his brother, Evan. He reluctantly prepares to join his family aloft in the Aerial Games that provide the entire village with its livelihood and tries desperately to think of an alternative.
As Tremeirchson’s barns prepare for the Rider Ceremony, winged horses suddenly start dying. Shocked, the adults hesitate, mired in tradition and politics. Is it a disease or poison? Accidental or purposeful? Someone must discover the answer and act before all the winged horses in the world are gone forever.(
~~~
My Review
Emma is burdened with following tradition or following her heart.
She loves her family and takes her responsibilities seriously, but her strong bond with a winged horse from another barn is forcing her to make a tough choice.
Meanwhile, a mysterious illness strikes the flying horses and the townsfolk must decide whether to stay or move their settlement.
When I first discovered these winged horses I was so excited. I’ve had a love for them since I was a young child. and actually had an imaginary world, which you entered through an old tree stump in my backyard, where I rode one of these magnificent creatures. It was so real for me, it makes me wonder.
Who could resist riding a winged horse in the Dance of Welcome or participating in the Aerial Games.
The games had me imagining jousting or polo in the sky.
I even visualized the games as playing Quiddich(Harry Potter) using flying horses instead of brooms. The danger is present as is the spectacular display of aerial feats.
A sky filled with these wonderous creatures would be something to behold.
As for the characters, once you become familiar with them, you are caught up in their stories.
There is a love triangle between Emma and the two brothers, Davyd and Evan. That’s not unusual with teenagers. Emma’s choice could tear this friendship apart.
While written for a younger audience, On a Wing and a Dare offers something for all ages: tradition, loyalty, tragedy, and coming of age.
Come fly with the barns of Tremeirchson.
After graduating, I moved to Japan where I wrote most of my debut novel, Airion: Return to Zire and all of my second novel Airion: Light and Dawn – the first two of a four book series. Excerpt:
“If the Cellians just wanted us dead, why didn’t they just kill Raili instead of taking him?” asked Kobi.
“That is the question, isn’t it?” said Kaiyen slowly. “If they only wanted to use his power, wouldn’t they have taken them both?”
“Not necessarily,” said Rick, fist to his chin. “Having both would probably be too dangerous to risk. They may have been afraid of being destroyed from the inside if they worked together to free themselves. Even with one son of the prophecy, they could cause considerable damage, or so they may think.”
“But Raili would never do that though,” Kobi protested. “Dad…I…I mean, Black Master Rick. You know Raili; you know he wouldn’t do anything like that.”
“It may not be his choice,” said Kimi. “The Cellians can be very persuasive.”
Kobi’s heart sank. “What would they do to him?” he asked, not wanting to hear the answer.
“Whatever they had to,” said Kaiyen. “That is why we must focus on a plan of rescue, before Raili Saio acquires the powers they seek.”
“On our fourteenth birthday,” said Kobi.
“Yes,” said Kai Ventra. “Almost all Airians change on their fourteenth birthday. Along with the natural changes they undergo, such as growing gills, they also acquire unique individual skills, allowing them to thrive more than most others in that ability. These abilities can be anything from designing exceptional clothing to controlling the elements.”
“The stronger the ability, the harder it is to control,” said Kaiyen. “No doubt Cella is depending on this.”
“It won’t work,” said Rick.
“Agreed,” nodded Kaiyen. “But there is another matter that must be discussed, if I may.” Questioning eyes turned to Kaiyen. “Lady Sara,” Kaiyen continued after a swift nod from the King. He was addressing the old woman seated beside Kimi, “have you seen anything in your Kubec about a traitor in Zire.”
Whispers filled the room. “You go too far, Captain,” said Bran.
“What are you saying,” said the advisor to Bran’s left.
“Silence,” said Sai Thayne. The talking ceased instantly. The King’s questioning eyes fell on Kaiyen then turned to Lady Sara. “Wise One?”
“This man possesses a tainted heart,” said the old woman, her eyes gazing into the diamond block. “His treachery dives deep.”
“Do you know who this man is?” asked Kaiyen.
“I see not his face nor his rank,” said Lady Sara, her brow creased and her hands resting on the Kubec. “However, he knows all that we know and some we do not.”
“It is as I thought,” said Kaiyen, “Zire’s traitor has resurfaced.”
Excerpt
Blu Tara stared her sister in the face. ‘Let me tell you what you don’t know about love, Gamma. It is a curse. You will scoop out your core and abandon it just to have the Being that you love. You will steal another person’s life force if it makes it easier to get it. You will abandon the world you have been cradled in, betray everything and everyone you care for. You’ll give up your name for it.’
Blu Tara’s voice went soft and dreamy. ‘You will gladly close your eyes and embrace the world of darkness. You will kill or die for it. And you will hate yourself for the weakness that it brings on you. So don’t talk to me about love.’
Gamma shook her head. ‘You’re not making sense,’ Blu Tara. ‘You talk as if… I’m the one who should be upset about all this.’
Blu Tara lifted her hand dismissively. She pointed a hot finger at Gamma. ‘Anyway don’t forget what we are.’
‘And what are we?’ Gamma glared at her..
‘Different. Strange. Something to be frightened of. Two Beings that can fuse and burn everything to ashes. That’s the way they all see us down there. That’s what the Stardog wants from you – the powers you possess.
‘I hate them all. With their suspicious, shiny faces and their empty games. I hate that Voice which drones on and on at us in the Learning Dome as soon as we’ve finished resting.
Innoverans! All those perfect, pretty Beings; they remember nothing — it’s the curse of this shallow, shining world. Tell me, Gamma – what do you remember of the world we come from before your Odors Apeno dumped us here?’
Gamma swung around to face her sister fully. ‘Blu Tara! What’s got into you? Where’s all that coming from? I’ve never heard you speak like that before. This is about Krave and I- not you!’
Krave and you – don’t make me laugh. And, oh! Here’s a big difference — between you and I this time, Twin Sister. It’s the answer to your question that you brought me up here to ask.’ Blu Tara mimicked Gamma’s soft and musical voice, Why do you want to kill Krave?
Here’s the answer, Gamma. I will do whatever I have to do to save myself. I’m the half of you that’s not like you. I don’t have a weeping heart. Now I’m out of here. I need my Rest.
Amazon Reviews
Conclusion:
A fantasy adventure that features lots of action and intrigue that is geared to a YA audience.
There are moments in this tale that are especially well done… story telling at a level that I’d be interested to see what this author would do with an adult orientated fantasy work.
As a dedicated YA work… 5 Stars.
~ Ray Nicholson
The beginning of a great adventure!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book of the Trail of Bones series. It is an unpredictable adventure, with heartwrenching acts of love and friendship. The story ended before I was prepared to put my Kindle down, and now I will wait anxiously for the second book to be published. In the meantime, I think I’ll read it again with my eleven-year-old son; I’m sure he’ll love it as much as I do. Give it a read!
~ HRL
Enthralling story line that really pulls you in
…The characters were some that I will not easily forget because he explains their background in a way that makes the reader really connect and believe they are real. He creates a world that I long to see. I really grew to both love and hate different characters. I think that is a sign of a really great author when they can make us feel so much emotion towards a character.
