Genre: Mystery

Synopsis

Easy Targets

When Chief Deputy Ken Brody’s sweetheart goes missing in the mountains outside Timber Creek, Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner, Robo, are called to search. But it’s mid-October and a dark snowstorm is brewing over the high country. And they’re already too late. By the time they find her body, the storm has broken and the snow is coming down hard.

While Brody hikes down to bring back the forensics team, and veterinarian Cole Walker gathers supplies to protect them from the storm, Mattie and Robo find themselves alone, guarding the gravesite overnight in the early winter. And it’s only the first in a series of long, dark nights. As their investigation develops, Mattie, Robo, Brody and Cole find themselves in the middle of the killer’s stalking ground—where the hunters have just become the hunted.

Synopsis

Abbey Gray, a NYT bestselling suspense author, is burned out. She needs time away from the madness of deadlines and personal appearances as well as her big city life in New York. Returning to her small hometown in Montana to hide herself away, she attempts to dive into her next novel. Abbey hopes the solitude will kickstart her muse but a murder next door gets in the way. The murder stirs painful memories from the past of another murder–Abbey’s mother. Can the eerily similar details of her neighbor’s murder help Abbey remember the truth about the past before she becomes the next victim? With the storm charging toward her hometown, there is no escaping what’s coming.

Sheriff Garrett Gilmore has known Abbey and her family his entire life. In truth, he’s probably been waiting for her to come back, knowing it likely wouldn’t happen or maybe he just has commitment issues. He can’t worry about that at the moment, he has a homicide to solve and a murderer to catch, all with the storm of the century bearing down on Montana. Survival is all that matters.

Read an Excerpt

Standing in the middle of a homicide scene was the last thing Sheriff Garrett Gilmore wanted to be doing on a Sunday morning—any morning, for that matter. Yet, here he was.

Garrett surveyed the backyard where Dottie Hansen lay prone on the cold ground not a half dozen yards from her back door. Dark crimson stained her ruffled pink dress. Strangely it didn’t appear to have run down the sides and puddled on the snow beneath her. Maybe there was more under the body, but he’d have to wait until the coroner arrived to check it out. Her bare feet were blue, as much from the fact that blood no longer flowed freely through her veins as the freezing temperature. He shook his head. Who the hell would do something like this to a woman closer to seventy than sixty? Dottie had lived in Park County her whole life. She baked for the church fundraisers. Taught elementary school for nearly four decades before retiring.

It didn’t make one lick of sense.

Two crime scene techs took photos and documented the scene. Evidence would be collected. The coroner was on his way. Three of Garrett’s deputies were searching the yard and the tree line, while two others scoured the house. So far they’d found no reason to suspect anything had been taken from inside the house—not even the cash in Mrs. Hansen’s handbag was missing—which left them without a clear motive for this brutal act.

Brewed Awakening

A Coffeehouse Mystery

by Cleo Coyle

Brewed Awakening (A Coffeehouse Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
18th in Series
Berkley (December 3, 2019)
Hardcover: 368 pages
ISBN-10: 0451488873
ISBN-13: 978-0451488879
Digital ASIN: B07GQHK51D

From Cleo Coyle, the New York Times bestselling author of Shot in the Dark and Dead Cold Brew, comes a delicious new entry in the “fun and gripping” (The Huffington Post) Coffeehouse Mysteries.

When coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi awakens on a bench in Washington Square Park, she has no idea she’s been missing for the past week, or that her friends and family have been frantic with worry. Now that she’s back, everyone is overjoyed, including a handsome NYPD detective who claims to be her fiancé. But to Mike Quinn’s crushing distress, Clare doesn’t remember him, or much of anything about the last decade of her life.

Clare’s missing memory is tied to a crime she witnessed. An acquaintance of Clare’s elegant employer–and fellow member of an exclusive Gotham circle known as “The Ladies Who Brunch”–invited Clare to her posh hotel to sample gourmet wedding cakes. The pair took a stroll after their indulgent tasting and, according to security camera footage, a masked figure snatched the hotel heiress at gunpoint with Clare looking on. Did the kidnapper take Clare, too? The camera went dark, just like Clare’s memory. Soon authorities grow suspicious. Is Clare really a victim? Or merely acting like one? Evidence is mounting that she set the woman up.

To clear her name, Clare must find a way to reclaim her memories and rescue the heiress before this high-stakes crime ends in tragedy. Otherwise, instead of walking down the aisle, Clare may find herself perp-walking to prison as an accomplice to kidnapping and murder.

Death By Library

A Pismawallops PTA Mystery

by Rebecca M. Douglass

Death By Library (Pismawallops PTA Mysteries)
Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Independently Published (December 6, 2019
Number of Pages — ~280
ASIN: B07XFBJW3B
GoodReads Link Coming Soon!

The library can save your life… can it kill you, too?

JJ has a new job at the library, which ought to make her happy. But with all those books to shelve, the PTA to run, and a 16-year-old son to raise, there’s never enough time to spend with her sweetheart, police chief Ron Karlson. That’s especially true with Thanksgiving on the horizon and her mother coming to visit, not to mention the PTA’s Holiday Bazaar looming ahead.

When things turn deadly in the library stacks, JJ needs some answers fast, before she loses her job—or her life. She’s determined to learn everything about the victim, and for once the library doesn’t hold all the answers. JJ and Kitty may have to face the ultimate peril: a visit to Mrs. Halsey, the oldest—and crankiest—person on the island.

About Author Rebecca M. Douglass

After a lifetime of reading, and a decade or more of slinging books at the library and herding cats with the PTA, Rebecca began to turn her experiences into books of her own, publishing her first in 2012. That failed to quiet the voices in her head, but seemed to entertain a number of readers, so she wrote some more, which generated still more voices. Despite the unlimited distractions provided by raising sons to the point of leaving home (and preparing to move without forwarding address if necessary to retain that empty nest), not to mention the mountains that keep calling (very hard to resist the urging of something the size of the Sierra Nevada), she has managed to pen a total of 9 books so far.

For those who enjoy murder and mayhem with a sense of humor, Rebecca’s Pismawallops PTA mysteries (Death By Ice Cream and Death By Trombone, Death By Adverb, and Death By Library) provide insights into what PTA moms are really like. If you prefer tall tales and even less of a grip on reality, visit Skunk Corners in The Ninja Librarian and the sequels Return to Skunk Corners and The Problem of Peggy. For those who’ve always thought that fantasy was a bit too high-minded, a stumble through rescues and escapes with Halitor the Hero, possibly the most hapless hero to ever run in fear from any and all fair maidens, should set you straight.

Why does Rebecca write so many different kinds of books (there’s even an alphabet picture book in the mix!)? We could argue that it’s because she has a rich lifetime of experience that requires expression in—squirrel!

Some chit chat.

It was crazy busy at work this week and I had to be there for Thanksgiving so I didn’t do much besides work and sleep. It looks like things will just get busier the closer we get to Christmas, so I’ll be grabbing every chance I get to relax, read and watch the telly. I’m working my way through Game Of Thrones again right now. On Season Two and I’m loving how good this show is no matter how many times I watch it.

Have a lovely Sunday everyone.

Scarlet Fever

A Novel – “Sister” Jane

by Rita Mae Brown

Scarlet Fever: A Novel (“Sister” Jane)
Cozy Mystery
12th in Series
Ballantine Books (November 26, 2019)
Hardcover: 304 pages
ISBN-10: 0593130006
ISBN-13: 978-0593130001
Digital ASIN: B07P8J8KVM

Winter blizzards bring a flurry of cases to solve in this riveting new foxhunting mystery featuring “Sister” Jane Arnold and her incorrigible hounds from New York Times bestselling author Rita Mae Brown.

Frigid February air has settled into the bones of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making for a slow foxhunting season, though “Sister” Jane Arnold’s enthusiasm is not so easily deterred. With the winter chill come tweed coats, blazing fireplaces—and perhaps another to share the warmth with, as the bold hunting scarlets worn by the men in Sister Jane’s hunting club make the hearts of women flutter—until someone’s stops entirely.

Harry Dunbar, a member of the Jefferson Hunt club with a penchant for antique furniture, is found with his skull cracked at the bottom of the stairs to a local store. There are no telltale signs of foul play—save for the priceless (and stolen) Erté fox ring in his pocket. Sister and her hounds set out to uncover the truth: was this simply an accident—a case of bad luck—or something much more sinister?

Steeped in the deep traditions of Virginia horse country and featuring a colorful cast of characters both two- and four-legged, Scarlet Fever is another spirited mystery from Rita Mae Brown.
