I graduated with a BA in art and English from Sonoma State University
in California. I’ve been an avid reader since I first learned how and
a writer from my early teenage years on. I’ve had several art related
businesses, including greeting cards and more recently a silk
painting business. When I began to write in earnest I put aside the
art, concentrating only on the writing.
I’ve traveled a lot over the years, finding inspiration wherever I go.
Scotland holds a special place in my heart, hence the setting for
“The Moonstone”. I had to make a 4th trip there to do
research as I was putting the book together!

Some chit chat.

Well, this week was a gully washer. I woke up to rain, worked in rain, and came home in rain. The sun finally shone it’s radiance Saturday morning. I rushed outside to enjoy it. Everything smelled so lush and green. Yes, green has a smell. LOL

Flors is the largest I’ve ever seen her. Just look at the size of her leaves.

20180728_113704

And my elephant ears are taking over.

20180728_113816

Their leaves will get even larger through the summer.

And I watched a movie I’d not seen in a long time. War Horse.

It was magnificent and broke my heart in places.

I love horse stories. Been reading books about them ever since I came across Walter Farley’s Black Stallion series. I still own all of the books in hard cover. They’re a bit worn but I love how the covers are so colorful and on the actual book, not book sleeves. Remember how they used to be like that.

Been reading a lot of good books and slacking on writing the reviews. What’s with that. I get all excited about a book I just read and sometimes the review writes itself and sometimes I can’t get the first sentence started. It has nothing to do with whether the book was good or not. LOL

Have a fabulous  Sunday and brand new week!

Genre: Horror

My Review

I’ve read many of Hunter’s books. I’ve enjoyed some of his shorter work and several of his full length novels. While I’ve come to expect and eat up his campy horror, I was curious to see how this would go as it appears to be on the more serious side. I’m happy to report that he wrote something above and beyond what I could have asked for.

I couldn’t decide which was more horrific. The physical affliction that tortured Kate’s and Andrew’s lives or the supernatural one. It was very difficult to read about Kate’s quality of life. What those two struggled with each and every day was tough to contemplate. And Hunter took me inside each character’s head to reveal their brutally honest feelings of anguish, fear and resentment.  This made them live and breath for me.

When the supernatural element came in to play I reminded myself this was one of Shea’s books and braced myself for every which way but loose He’s quite creative at and willing to kill off any of his characters. It got very crazy very fast. And I loved the setting. A cottage tucked away in the woods. No neighbors for miles. The perfect setting for some scary stuff.

Be sure to read the Afterword Hunter Shea provides at the end of the book. It explains how he wrote his characters so genuinely and how difficult it was for him to write this book. It made me appreciate the story even more.

 Did I love the book? Yes. Would I recommend it? You know it.

As an author, I take great pleasure in writing about topics that I find interesting, and of course my latest novel is a perfect example. Hometown Girl Again, book five of The Hometown Series, features vintage camp trailers from the 1950s! What could possibly be more romantic? As Katherine learns in the novel, restoring old trailers is actually quite difficult and dirty, but extremely rewarding work.

Six authentic vintage trailers are featured in the novel, and as the reader you will follow Katherine from her quiet orderly life where every choice is safe, through the unexpected adventure of restoring trailers for her new glamping park.

The first trailer in the book, Katherine’s home, is a 1954 Anderson 315-TB, complete with turquoise and chrome exterior, bubble window in the door, polished birch interior walls and ceiling, and a vintage 1950 style bathroom. Among the trailers she loving overhauls is a 33 foot 1950 Spartan Royal Mansion, similar to the one Lucille Ball and Dezi Arnez own in the movie The Long Long Trailer. If you have ever been curious about vintage trailers, this story is for you!

.
hometown girl

Katherine, as well as the other leading ladies in The Hometown Series, have their mind set on a task and just as everything is going great, in walks unexpended complications in the form of a handsome man. These ladies aren’t afraid to work hard and get grimy to make their dreams come true, and of course, they can’t help falling in love. In Hometown Girl Again, Katherine gets the added stressful bonus of falling for her ex, her first love from a decade past. I think most of us experience an inward shudder at the thought, but in all fairness, many us also harbor a tiny hidden place in the back of our heart for our first love.

I hope you enjoy returning to Smithville. Of course, the town folk you know and love can’t resist interfering with Katherine and Alex, and the trailers. I’d love to hear what you think about the story, as well as any photos you’d like to share of your vintage trailers!

My Review

Whenever I see the words haunted or possessed in a book description my attention zeroes in. Imagine my delight when I read that this has both.

The haunting starts fairly quickly and the blurb already tells you who’s the haunter and the hauntee. I felt that worked well as the author got right down to business. The haunting starts gradually with some odd events but soon, Jamie can’t even sleep in his own room. Later he hesitates to even go in his own house. Doesn’t matter once he gets possessed. The haunting follows him everywhere then. He’ll have to settle accounts with the ghost or die trying.

I often like a story where I have a good idea where the author is taking me. Then I can relax and roll with the story, or maybe not as this is filled with creepy atmosphere, not to mention some startling twists. The story really gets dark when the mystery of what really happened to Jaime’s sister is revealed and the consequences are doled out with horrific results.

Did this book scare me? Not enough to make me sleep with the lights on, but it did kind of creep me out. Would I read more by this author? Definitely. Do I recommend this book? Absolutely.

Synopsis

SOME SECRETS ARE MADE TO BE UNCOVERED.

Sixteen-year-old Jamie McGuiness’s sister is dead. Sinking into a deep depression, he frequents the lighthouse where her body was discovered, unaware of the sinister forces surrounding him.

When an angry spirit latches onto Jamie, he’s led down a dark and twisted path, one that uncovers old family secrets, destroying everything Jamie ever believed in.

Caught between the world of the living and the vengeful dead, Jamie fights the pull of the other side. It’s up to Jamie to settle old scores or no one will rest in peace—but, first, he has to survive.

~~~~~
Enjoy this glimpse inside:
Jamie sat on the edge of his bed crying. Unable to stem the flow, he pounded his fist against the bed. The guilt-laden emotions swelled until they crushed him from the inside out, battered by the past.
If he had told his parents sooner about the things his sister Emer had been doing, she’d still be alive. Every time he thought of her, all the things he should have done to save her flooded through his mind. But he still ended up facing the harsh reality—he had failed her. It was his fault. A void like no other existed, leaving him in a limbo worse than death.
Jamie took off his school shirt and walked to the dresser. He grabbed a T-shirt from one of its drawers. He looked hard at his reflection in the mirror. How would it feel to not exist? The mirror showed the Jamie everyone knew and loved, yet his blue eyes were empty.
The young lad with dreams of playing for his favorite football team no longer existed. In his place stood a shadow, a living, breathing shell of the person he used to be. The ugliness of his home had become a constant reminder of the person he no longer was, and he hated himself even more. There was no escape or a happy ever after. Desolation and depression lurked in his future, and it hurt almost as bad as Emer’s death.
Jamie closed his eyes for a moment.
A chill, the same kind he’d felt in the library, pricked at his skin. The air grew thick and icy. Each labored breath became sharp. Every nerve in his body stood on edge, his senses on overdrive. He opened his eyes.
A shadow loomed behind him in the mirror’s reflection, its presence dominating him. He stood still, his heart pounding hard.
The shadow flowed, a discordant and uncoordinated swirling mesh of movement.
Jamie’s gaze remained locked on the mirror, unable to break free. The apparition descended upon him, shrouding him in its dark, wet residue. It moved through him.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
His heart was in a vise, compressed by whatever moved through his core. His eyes bulged, and he gasped for breath. Cool air washed over him.
Water lapped around his ankles. A strange odor assailed his nostrils. Unsure of where he was, or why he was there, Jamie scrambled to make sense of it. One minute, he stood in his room. The next, he was confined in a pit.
Scream after scream ripped through his throat. Jamie struggled to find a way out. He caught sight of his hands … only they weren’t his. The shock silenced his screams.
He wasn’t in his body.
He saw things through someone else’s eyes. Darkness crowded the edges of his vision.
Back in his room, he stood in front of the mirror, trembling and soaking wet. Jamie searched the room, trying to figure out what had just happened. Nothing was out of place. He shivered. Nothing would ever explain what had just occurred.
Jamie took a few deep breaths and dried off, while sweat trickled down his brow. He put on a fresh change of clothes, doing his best not to think. Taking a step towards the door, he glanced around the room. Unease swarmed within him. He grabbed the door handle and swallowed the tight ball, which had formed in the back of his throat.
He closed the door tight behind him and whispered, “It’s all in your head.”
Welcome to The Kid’s Korner.
I decided to do this feature as I have so many great children’s books to share. From picture books, to books for beginning readers, to middle graders, I have plenty of fun ones.
Today I’m taking you deep down in the ocean. It’s a fishy tale, indeed.
How The Squid Got Two Long Arms
by Henry Herz
Art by Luke Graber
20180731_135440
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Illustrated Children’s Book
My Review
  Squid have ten arms. Ever wonder why two of them are longer than the others? Henry Herz has a tale to tell.
20180731_133850
A  squid with only a flashy silver scarf to keep him warm in the cold ocean snatches a sweater from a sleeping octopus.
20180731_133833
He then comes across a  fiddler crab minding his own business and swoops in and takes his mitten.
20180731_134031
Then he spies a sea dweller with a hat. Oh, he really needs that hat. What happens next changes the little thief forever and will stretch your imagination. And a sneaky little fish may be the next story you want to “sea.”
This was an adorable tale about bad actions having consequences. The naughty little squid was quite the thief. The more he took, the more he wanted and the sea sure was bountiful.
The fabulous pictures help tell the story. They’re so colorful and bold that the creatures look like they could swim right out of the pages. I was showing them to my son and he suggested something fun. We turned out all the lights so it was very dark. Then we read the book using a flashlight. It really felt like we were in the dark ocean. I have the print copy and it’s large, like a magazine, with lovely textured pages. The author includes some interesting facts and photos about squid at the end of the book. As much a learning tool as pure enjoyment, this story drew me back more than once.
Synopsis
Author Henry Herz tells a clever story about a selfish squid who pays the price for stretching the patience of his fellow sea creatures thin. The tale trails a shivering squid swimming through the cold waters of winter who spots a cozy looking sweater. Although it belongs to an octopus, the squid makes off with the sweater. Still not cozy, the squid keeps swimming and helping himself to more clothes to keep himself warm, until the true owners of the clothes come after him with dire consequences! This charming new twist on a pourquoi tale is complete with colorful comic book style illustrations and scientific information about real life squids that will interest readers of all ages!
Blessed Be
The Summers Sisters Book 1
byTeresa Keefer
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Alana Summers was quite content with her life. A peaceful farm tucked in a
wooded area by the lake with her pets for company. A shop in the
small tourist town where she sells a potpourri of items that reflect
everything about her. She’s at peace. She’s Wiccan.
Logan Farmer is the local sheriff. Small town boy who went to the big city
and joined the police force. Then he came home where he belonged. He
is deeply rooted in his Native American heritage.
Both had grown up knowing that there was more to the world that could be
explained or seen. But neither of them knew that their peaceful lives
could be disrupted in an instant by a legend long buried. A tale that
had been told to them by Logan’s grandmother when they were young
along with a warning that the ancient legend could replay during
their lifetime.
But was it really an ancient paranormal evil come to roost or were the
recent events merely the doings of a warped human mind? Or had the
human’s events shaped the return of the evil?
Threefold
The Summers Sisters Book 2
Teagan Summers has a secret that she thought she had tucked away forever.
That is, until she was summoned to her home town of Lakewood to help
with banishing an ancient evil that had come to pay a visit to the
sleepy town. Then, she was faced with another woman whose secret
wasn’t so secret anymore.
Devon Brock knew he had to help his friend, Logan Farmer. Logan had helped
him out too many times to turn his back and say no. However, he
didn’t realize that he would be called upon to pull out his law
license to defend a poor woman who had killed and mutilated her
husband on Halloween night. And he sure never expected to have to
deal with spoiled Teagan Summers as part of it.
Devon and Teagan join forces as they work valiantly to not only defend a
murderess, but to help Teagan’s sisters and Logan Farmer as they
battle an unseen evil that threatens to destroy the small town of
Lakewood. And as they work together, they also form a tentative truce
that they both know could lead to more.
Namaste
The Summers Sisters Book 3
Riana Summers had spent most of her adult life trying to find herself. The
youngest of the three Summer Sisters, she just couldn’t resist sowing
her wild oats and she had done it across the country. When her
sister, Alana, had summoned her to come home to Lakeview because she
was needed to do her part to hunt down and destroy an evil entity
which had been playing havoc on her hometown, she did so with the
intention of returning to her stand-up comedy gig in Las Vegas. She
had no idea her brief trip home would turn to months and that she
would end up finding out who she really was. Or that she would find
herself face to face with a man who could get her to want to settle down.
Eric Michaels had been born and raised to be a farmer. It was what he did
best. So, when the opportunity to be the foreman at a farm near a
place called Lakeview, he had jumped at the chance. What he hadn’t
planned on was getting sucked into a paranormal nightmare. Things he
couldn’t even begin to fathom. Including finding himself deeply
attracted to a woman who could create magic with the tips of her
fingers.
As the conclusion of the Summer Sisters trilogy comes to an end, will
they be able to destroy the force that had unearthed itself from its
deep dark grave to destroy them?
Looking deep within this dysfunctional family Dr. Winter uncovers a life where boundaries were violated and a narcissistic parent held sway. And where one sister’s return might just be the beginning of the crime.
Praise for EMMA IN THE  NIGHT
“Twisty…a thriller that keeps readers guessing.” —The New York Times
“A tense thriller explores the bond between sisters and family dynamics that give new meaning to the term ‘dysfunctional’…This thriller aims right for the heart and never lets go.” —Kirkus, Starred Review
“Both twisted and twisty, this smart psychological thriller sets a new standard for unreliable narrators.” —Booklist, Starred Review
