This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

It’s the second week of February here on the Gulf Coast, and you know what that means?

Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Let the good times roll!

It’s Mardi Gras time!

Friday night saw the first of many parades, starting off with the Conde Cavaliers. People flock in droves to catch beads, toys, and Moon Pies.

Many people believe this celebration originated in New Orleans when in fact, history shows the first celebration was established in 1703 by French settlers in Mobile, Alabama. And we do it up big here.

I’ve been to many parades but not so often now that I’m older. It can be tiring and people go crazy for the trinkets.  I do hope to go to at least one. I’ll brave the crowds, the need for a non- existent bathroom, and the people willing to break my arm to snatch that shiny strand of beads I’ve managed to latch on to right out of my hands. LOL

Have you ever been to a Mardi Gras parade?

Got two super thrillers for you today.

Afraid

by Jack Kilborn

Genre: Horror

My Review

I’m sure you’ve read the synopsis so I won’t bore you with much about that. The setting is a peaceful little town in the wilderness. One way in, one way out.  Who will survive the night?

When a helicopter crashes, horror of such magnitude is unleashed on the denizens. How can they survive what’s come calling? How do they fight back? That’s where it gets crazy.

One thing I’ve learned from reading this author, you get a diverse mix of characters. I suspect some are easy surplus to spot. But don’t thing those characters you become attached to will make it through the night. Jack isn’t above killing them off and does so frequently in his books.

And I feel I need to warn you, this is gory to the nth level. I actually cringed at a lot of the violence, but, having read the author before, I’ve come to expect it.

This isn’t for the feint of heart, but it’s good fodder for fans of violence, gore, and psychological mayhem.

Synopsis

ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? YOU WILL BE . . .

Welcome to Safe Haven, Wisconsin. Miles from everything, with one road in and out, this peaceful town has never needed a full-time police force. Until now . . .

A helicopter has crashed near Safe Haven and unleashed something horrifying. Now this merciless force is about to do what it does best. Isolate. Terrorize. Annihilate. As residents begin dying in a storm of gory violence, Safe Haven’s only chance for survival will rest with an aging county sheriff, a firefighter, and a single mom. And each will have this harrowing thought: Maybe death hasn’t come to their town by accident . . .

Truck Stop

by Jack Kilborn and J.A. Konrath

6598913

Genre: Horror / Thriller

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

My mother warned me about truck stops. Never, ever stop at one alone. Especially at night. You never know what evil stalks them.

Truck Stop will show you just what haunts them. There’s not just one serial killer biding their time, waiting for their next delicious victim. Imagine them plotting together, working together, and trying to one up each other.

In walks a woman. A homicide cop who thinks she knows all about serial killers. She’s minding her own business and stops in for a cup of java to keep her awake on the road. What happens next is a trip down the deepest, darkest rabbit hole.

So twisted on so many levels. Just the way I like em.

Synopsis

Before the events of Jack Kilborn’s epic horror novel AFRAID…

Before the events of J.A. Konrath’s critically acclaimed thrillers FUZZY NAVEL and CHERRY BOMB…

Before the events of Jack Kilborn’s and Blake Crouch’s #1 Amazon Kindle bestseller SERIAL…

Three hunters of humans meet for the ultimate showdown at the TRUCK STOP.

Taylor is a recreational killer, with dozens of grisly murders under his belt. He pulls into a busy Wisconsin truck stop at midnight, trolling for the next to die.

Chicago Homicide cop Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels is a long way from home, driving to meet her boyfriend for a well-earned vacation. She pulls into the truck stop for a quick cup of coffee and stumbles into her worst nightmare.

Jack’s no stranger to dealing with psychos, but she’s got her hands full trying to stop Taylor. Especially since he’s getting help from someone just as deadly; a portly serial maniac named Donaldson…

TRUCK STOP is a 15,000 word thriller novella that ties together Konrath’s and Kilborn’s works, with terrifying results.

A prequel to SERIAL, which has been downloaded more than 70,000 times, TRUCK STOP is an eighteen-wheeled ride straight into hell. Not for the faint of heart. Let the reader beware.

This ebook also includes an exclusive interview: JA Konrath talks with Jack Kilborn, plus excerpts from their latest books, CHERRY BOMB and AFRAID.

Welcome to Freakin Fridays, where I share my reviews of books that scare you, thrill you, and get those endorphins pumping.

Today’s treats are all about the monsters in the dark.

 ‘Nids

by Ray Garton

11471444

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

It’s funny that I love to read stories about spiders killing people when I have a huge phobia for them. Just thinking about spiders has my skin twitching, feeling them crawling all over me.

It appears that saying, “Because I can,” rings true in this story. Some people cook up something in a lab, never worrying about what could go wrong. Innocent people start dying, ripped apart.

You getting the picture? A genetically engineered experiment is loose. It’s huge. Crawls on more than six legs. And it’s so very hungry.

The plot never gets old for me. I love movies like this and the author gave me some good old fashioned scares.

It’s been said that there’s a spider within six feet of you at any given time. Creepy to think about, isn’t it?

 4 Stars

~~~~~
Synopsis
Medical research? Genetic experiments? No one knows exactly what goes on inside the sprawling BioGenTech building on the edge of town. But after an enormous explosion at the facility, people in town start turning up dead…and in pieces.
Something is loose in Hope Valley. Something big…and fast…and hungry. It has a lot of legs, a nasty disposition and a big appetite. This is one spider you can’t step on.
Another one from my huge TBR!
When The Tik-Tik Sings
by Doug Lamoreux
26031060
Genre: Horror
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
The author sets the tone early in the book. A quiet Iowa town and it’s residents go about life as usual. Then the singing begins. Tik tik. Tik tik. And hell comes calling.
Got to hand it to the author. He gave me a new monster. And it has a friend. They don’t waste any time wreaking havoc.  By the time you hear the singing, it’s already too late.
In the beginning, I could understand how some of the characters reacted. Later on, when they knew they were dealing with something otherworldly, I questioned their actions. While you have to suspend your belief in order to enjoy a good horror story, I do feel these characters should have got their acts together sooner.  But, what’s a good monster story without some sacrificial lambs.
You won’t hear me complaining about the monster. It was bizarre. And the ending. It was a crazy showdown.
   3 Stars
~~~~~

Synopsis

In a sleepy historical Iowa town, on the banks of the Mississippi River, tourist season is in full swing, and the strangest serial killer the world has ever known is roaming at will.

It begins with a mysterious house explosion, a severely burned man, and an unidentified female body. More victims follow, each killed under the oddest circumstances, each bearing an identical but unidentified wound, each attack accompanied by the most eerie, musical ticking. When the lead homicide investigator goes missing, Police Sergeant Erin Vanderjagt is forced into the fray and into a personal hell she never imagined.

Who or what could be behind the bizarre deaths, and why is Erin’s boyfriend suddenly acting crazy? Why has her idyllic world suddenly fallen apart? And – as the murders continue – what can Erin do, where can she go, how can she fight the horror… When the Tik-Tik Sings?

Enjoy the interview with Lauren Carr

  1. If you could go back in time, what period and where would you go?
  2. Oh, man! Right off hand, first gut reaction, I say Texas during the days of wild west. Simply because I love horses and animals and I would want to live on a ranch and go horseback riding every day. But then, that would be before the days of indoor plumbing, which means I would not have my whirlpool tub and men would smell like body odor. So let me think about that.

  1. What is your favorite travel spot?

LC: Anywhere a cruise ship can take me! Finally, after years of talking about it, I went on a cruise this summer to the Bahamas a couple of years ago now I am hooked. I came back swearing that I would go on a cruise every year—but then life took over, my son went off the college. Oh, man! Give me a minute. I need to call Royal Caribbean now!

  1. What is your favorite dessert?

LC: Cheesecake Factory Tuxedo cheesecake or if that is not available, chocolate lava cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Actually, anything that includes chocolate makes my top ten dessert list.

  1. If you were stuck on a dessert island, what three books would you want with you?

LC: Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe for inspiration.

SAS Survival Handbook, Third Edition: The Ultimate Guide to Surviving Anywhere by John “Lofty” Wiseman for tips on how to make the most out of this experience.

The Holy Bible.  Always good to have.

  1. What is the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?

Write a book and allow it to be made public for readers to read.

  1. What’s next for Lauren Carr?

LC: Twofer Murder will be a treat for mystery lovers because it will be two mysteries in one novel. This book will contain all of the characters from the Mac Faraday, Lovers in Crime, and Thorny Rose mysteries. The guys go fishing and get embroiled in a murder mystery. Meanwhile, the ladies go off to a murder mystery writers conference and end up wrapped up in their own mystery when an up and coming mystery writer ends up dead! Can’t beat that! Two mysteries for the price of one!

As for Murphy and Jessica of the Thorny Rose, sorry, readers, but the next Thorny Rose Mystery is at least a year away. I’m now working on three series! The working title for the next Thorny Rose Mystery is From Rags to Riches to Dead. In this mystery, Jessica’s best friend Amy receives news that her leech of a husband was killed in a freak accident at an expensive resort, where he had spent the last several days living it up. Amy, and Jessica are still trying to sort out this news when Dean walks in—alive and well. Upon investigation, they discover that a killer has been stealing the identity of deadbeat husbands who have been living off their rich wives, and then luring them to expensive resorts to murder them.

A Fine Year For Murder

A Thorny Rose Mystery #

by Lauren Carr

A Fine Year for Murder

Synopsis

After months of marital bliss, Jessica Faraday and Murphy Thornton are still discovering and adjusting to their life together. Settled in their new home, everything appears to be perfect … except in the middle of the night when, in darkest shadows of her subconscious, a deep secret from Jessica’s past creeps to the surface to make her strike out at Murphy.

When investigative journalist Dallas Walker tells the couple about her latest case, known as the Pine Bridge Massacre, they realize Jessica may have witnessed the murder of a family living near a winery owned by distant relatives she was visiting and suppressed the memory.

Determined to uncover the truth and find justice for the murder victims, Jessica and Murphy return to the scene of the crime with Dallas Walker, a spunky bull-headed Texan. Can this family reunion bring closure for a community touched by tragedy or will this prickly get-together bring an end to the Thorny Rose couple?

Returned Trilogy

.

Returned

by Kimberley Griffiths Little

Returned

After tragedy strikes on the day they were to wed, Jayden must support Kadesh as he ascends the throne and becomes king of Sariba. But with the dark priestess Aliyah conspiring to control the crown, and the arrival of Horeb, Jayden’s former betrothed, Kadesh’s kingdom, as well as his status as king, is at stake.

Jayden knows that the time to be merciful has come and gone, and that some enemies can only be halted by death. Now she and Kadesh must prepare to fight not only for their love, but also for their kingdom.
This is the final book in the epic trilogy that began with Forbidden and Banished. Jayden and Kadesh’s love will be put to the ultimate test as they fight a war to save their kingdom.

.

amazon

Enjoy the excerpt.

Last night should have been one of bliss. After all Kadesh and I had been through—the loss of my family, the trek through the harsh desert . . . this should have been our night, the first as husband and wife in the marriage tent. I’d imagined us sipping wine and bathing in a marbled bath. Lying in perfect luxury on a golden bed, together at last.

Instead, Kadesh and I were like lost children, orphaned by the sudden death of his uncle, King Ephrem, and our wedding ceremony that had been irrevocably destroyed mere hours ago.

While King Ephrem’s pyre burned out, the last of the red flames snapped at the salty sea air, devouring the body of the King of Sariba.

A hot wind whipped at my bridal gown. I wanted to scrape the horror of the night from my sight until my eyelids were raw.

Praise for the Book

Booklist (starred review)

“At its core, this is a romance, with all the push and pull that goes along with impossible love, and Little elevates the story by creating a perilous landscape, both outward and inward, as Jayden must deal with the hardship of desert life as well as her own desires. . . descriptions of the landscape are evocative in both desolation and in beauty. Just as good is the pacing, which gets the blood pumping for both characters and readers. This will heighten anticipation for a no-doubt exciting conclusion.”

Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“Rich historical details are deftly woven into Jayden’s narration, and the dynamics of Jayden’s tribe are vividly drawn. Jayden’s story becomes as much about finding herself as it is about finding love.”

Reader: “This book took my breath away. I loved the immersive story and the rich setting of ancient Mesopotamia. The customs, traditions, and beliefs of the desert people were captivating and every time I set the book down I couldn’t wait to pick it up again. I’ve never read anything like this before.”

Reader: “Forbidden was so captivating that I awoke early in the morning, while my family was still sleeping, so I could finish the last pages of this beautifully haunting tale.”

A REFERENCE TO MURDER
by Kym Roberts
Genre: Cozy Mystery

Pub Date: 5/16/2017

SOMETIMES YOU GET WHAT YOU

NEED .. .

Charli Rae Warren is back home in Hazel

Rock, Texas, spending her time reading, collecting, and selling

books—at least, the ones that don’t get eaten first by her

father’s pet armadillo. Running the family bookstore is a demanding

job, but solving murders on the side can be flat out dangerous…

The Book Barn is more than just a shop,

it’s a part of the community—and Charli is keeping busy with a

fundraising auction and the big rodeo event that’s come to town.

That includes dealing with the Texas-sized egos of some celebrity

cowboys, including Dalton Hibbs, a blond, blue-eyed bull rider who

gets overly rowdy one night with the local hairdresser . . . and soon

afterward, disappears into thin air.

Dalton’sbrother also vanished seven years ago—and Charli is thrown

about whether Dalton is a villain or a victim. After a close call with an

assailant wielding a branding iron (that plays havoc with her hair),

and some strange vandalism on her property, she’s going to have to

team up with the sheriff to untangle this mystery, before she gets

gored . . .

Three career paths resonated for Kym

Roberts during her early childhood: detective, investigative

reporter, and . . .nun. Being a nun, however, dropped by the wayside

when she became aware of boys—they were the spice of life she

couldn’t deny. In high school her path was forged when she took her

first job at a dry cleaners and met every cop in town, especially the

lone female police officer in patrol. From that point on there was no

stopping Kym’s pursuit of a career in law enforcement. Kym followed

her dream and became a detective who fulfilled her desire to be an

investigative reporter, with one extra perk—a badge. Promoted to

sergeant, Kym spent the majority of her career in SVU. She retired

from the job reluctantly when her husband dragged her kicking and

screaming to another state, but writing continued to call her name,

at least in her head. Visit her on the web at kymroberts.com.

~~~~~
This book sounds so fun. It would be a dream job to deal in books. I love my local used book store. I can spend hours browsing through the paperbacks. I also haunt thrift shops frequently, looking for that hidden gem.
Also, I’m a southern gal and the story is set in a neighboring state. I can relate to the possum on the half shell on the cover. LOL
What stands out for you?
Something Like Voodoo
Rebecca Hamilton
Publication date: February 7th 2017
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult
From New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Hamilton
High School can be a witch.
A teen girl with the ability to predict deaths through her drawings shouldn’t need to lie constantly to make her life sound interesting. But that doesn’t stop Emily from spinning stories faster than she can keep up.
After transferring to a new school, Emily’s ‘dull’ life is shaken by the appearance of a boy who seems unfazed by her far-fetched stories. A too-handsome-for-his-own-good senior, Noah has some secrets of his own. He needs Emily’s special gift to save him from Sarah, queen bee of the school’s It Girls, whose own supernatural abilities have forced him into a life of silence and solitude.
But when Emily tries to free him from Sarah’s voodoo curse, things go belly up, landing Emily on Sarah’s hit list. Soon, Emily and Noah are on a collision course with the It Girls, leading to a shocking revelation that ties them together in unimaginable ways. If their powers remain unchecked, this teenage popularity contest could spell the death of them all …
Romantically charged and eerily chilling, Something Like Voodoo weighs the choice of saving your life versus fighting for a life worth saving. This paranormal romance will put a spell on you.
~~~~~

Enjoy this glimpse inside.

Boots crunching the snow, I slung my backpack over my shoulder. When I shut my car door with a little too much force, I cringed, but a slow breath resettled my nerves. Kind of. Then I focused only on the school’s main entrance. Get from here to there. That was all I had to do. Tell some lady or some man at some desk who I was and pick up my class schedule.

Halfway there now.

Someone shouted, “Hey,” as I walked into a solid mass.

“Ow.” I grabbed my shoulder and checked for what caused the damage.

Apparently that mass was a person.

“Watch where you’re going,” the person said.

I looked up. Goosebumps prickled up my arms and neck. Staring back at me was a boy with the most intense cerulean eyes, framed by the darkest lashes. So much for avoiding eye contact.

“I’m, uh, wow. Sorry.” I scurried past him but he gripped my arm, spinning me back again. “Whoa!” I cried out. “Listen, I said—”

“No.” He shook his head. “I’m sorry. You’re new here?”

Being new was the worst thing to be in high school. “Um, no,” I lied. “I just skip classes a lot.”

He laughed, the anger lines that creased his forehead dissipating. “You’re that Bishop girl,” he said with a little too much fascination. Guess my reputation preceded me. “Come on, brat. I’ll show you to the office.”

Brat? I shook it off. I heard him wrong. I mean, that would be pretty rude, right? He seemed like he wanted to help me, even though I’d totally crashed into him.

As we walked, I made an extra effort not to look at him. Not in the eyes, anyway. It was impossible not to see some of him from the corner of my vision. He wore a short-sleeved shirt and shorts, but I bit back the urge to ask if he was cold. If he were, he would’ve worn something warmer. So I kept my mouth shut and stared at his calf muscles as he led me through the front doors into the large open hall.

With such an athletic build, I bet he had some cheerleader girlfriend who would flip out if she saw him talking to me. I’d been here all of ten minutes and already I was making enemies.

This school year was going to be awesome.

A little creepier than some of the other books in the series. I liked how the boys handled the selfish monster. A lesson to all.

I especially like the cover for this book. When I was young, I hunted the library shelves looking for ones like this. And such a clever title too.

Synopsis

Not all monsters are sweet; some are scary, or worse, selfish! For weeks, Jerry had noticed things missing, but it wasn’t until his best friend Chuck lost the T.V. remote that they met the monster stealing their stuff. Do the boys have what it takes to stop the most selfish monster of them all?

The Monsters A to Z series gets scary in the third book that’s not for the feint of heart.

My Review

A fun story to read along with or out loud to your young ones. It has the cutest illustrations of the monsters too.

Ever wonder what your kid imagines is in their closet when they cry out to you. This is a delightful story that may dampen those fears in your child. Have them imaging quirky friends in there instead of something scary.

I had no problem connecting with this one. I remember one night, I was in bed with the lights out and heard a noise coming from my walk in closet. My older brother jumped out screaming and scared me into my teens. LOL I still sleep with my closet doors closed. This book would have come in handy after that incident.

Discern – an award-winning and bestselling urban fantasy novel by Andrea Pearson

Nicole put her things down, not wanting anything to be in her hands when she picked up the disgusting book. She reached for it, but hesitated. Already, she could sense warmth coming from the leather cover, and she wasn’t even touching it. Its magical pulses were different from the other items—they seemed to drip off the book like sweat.

Nicole hesitated, but wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t as if something bad would happen, right? She took a deep breath and placed her hands on the book. It shivered under her touch and she cringed, pulling back. The sensation of warm leather made her flesh crawl, and she rubbed her hands and arms on her jeans, trying to get the feeling to go away.

Come on, Nicole. Don’t wimp out.

Without letting herself think about it, she picked up the book and lifted the cover.

A wind rushed over her, blowing her hair back, roaring in her ears. She caught a brief whiff of tobacco smoke before the surge of air reversed and sucked the breath out of her lungs, making her gasp.

The floor under her quaked. The book vibrated. The leather on the cover moved, muscles beneath it flexing. Nicole tried to drop the book, but couldn’t. She was unable to control her hands or fingers. They clenched so tightly, they ached. A shadow covered the pages of the book, preventing her from reading.

What was going on? She gasped again, trying to breathe against the strong wind. She felt someone touch her shoulder, but she couldn’t move. Her fingers still clung to the book. The shadow on the pages shifted, roiled, and turned toward her, the brief outline of a face visible. It watched her for several moments.

Nicole . . .

The voice was soft, deep. A strange yearning inside her made her want to read the book, to understand. To join the owner of the voice, though she didn’t know where or what he was.

The wind slowed to a gentle and familiar caress across her cheek. Familiar?

Then suddenly, it all stopped. The book fell from her hands and slammed itself shut. She backed away, her arms, legs—everything—shaking.

“What happened?” Professor Coolidge asked next to her, making her jump.

“I—I don’t know.” Nicole tried to smooth her hair, but her hands shook too much. She tucked them under her arms. “It said my name . . . and there was a shadow. In-inside it.”

Coolidge lifted the leather book. His mouth popped open in surprise. “You’ve activated a force within it—something alive.” He looked at her, fear and worry on his face. “How did you do that?”

Nicole shook her head. “I don’t know,” she repeated.

Professor Coolidge put the book back on the table. “I’m not sure what to say, other than the book is much more powerful than it used to be.” He peered at her, scrutinizing her. “And I’d love to know why it called to you, why you woke it up, when so many others have not.”
