So, another week of nothing much new around here. I did get a new computer for my son. And I got a hair cut.

The weather has been beautiful and hovering around the mid to high 80s. The pool is lovely. I managed to get in a couple of swims on Saturday and plan to do more swimming today. Got to enjoy it while the weather lasts.

Oh yeah. I’m planning to watch The Conjuring 2 tonight. Have you seen it yet? Is it as good as it’s been hyped up to be?

Other than that, it’s just been me doing a lot of reading. Got lots of books to share, and some fun freebies.

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday Posts so be sure to leave me your link.

A Bond Of Venom and Magic
Karen Tomlinson
(The Goddess and the Guardians #1)
Publication date: October 14th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

The Wraith Lord is hunting; his prize, the key to unleashing darkness and Chaos upon the eight Kingdoms.

For Diamond Gillon the war raging in the south seems a remote danger until her home is brutally attacked. Having lost everything she holds dear, Diamond is catapulted into a terrifying new world in which legendary beasts arise, magic is condemned and half blood fae, like her, have no rights. Despite her growing feelings for her saviour, Commander Hugo Casimir, he remains a paradox – not only is he a heartless killer, he is owned by the cruel immortal fae queen; a queen who will murder her own people for magic.

As Diamond’s circumstances become ever more perilous she is drawn deeper into Hugo’s world and discovers the lengths to which he will go to save what he holds dear. Will Hugo become her friend, her protector, or – an enemy not worthy of her trust?

A Bond of Venom and Magic is a tale of two people bound by magic and secrets, but trapped in the complexities of love and betrayal. It is the beginning of an epic journey, one that will test Diamond’s resolve and determination to battle an evil that threatens not only her world but that of Eternity, the land of The Guardians and The Goddess.

EXCERPT:

The window warrior spun swiftly in front of the door, facing Hugo with his sword drawn. Clearly he wanted to give his lord time to escape, even if that meant his own death. Before the door banged shut downstairs, Hugo stormed forward. The warrior flicked his wrist. Diamond gasped. Red magic. No Avalonian had red magic anymore. It ripple across the room like a wave of shimmering heat. Hugo roared, but not in pain.

Leaning into the onslaught of power he grinned with fiendish delight, darkness rippling around him. A shroud of silver-flamed shadow devoured the red wave, even as his powerful body charged forwards.

The warrior swore, desperately raising his sword in defense. Clearly he had expected a different reaction to his magical attack. Hugo’s wrathful bellow filled the room as he drove his sword down. Metal jarred and sparked.

“You took her from me! I can smell her blood. Now you will die!” he promised, his voice nothing like his own. It was more animalistic than Diamond had ever heard.

The warrior blocked Hugo’s blade with skill and precision. Red magic meant the ability to control heat and fire. Hugo’s blade began to glow as the other fae heated it like it had come out of a furnace. Hugo grunted but did not let go. The white-hot metal did not burn him through the glove of darkness rippling around his hand.

“Stop this, commander! We are not your enemy,” the warrior panted, blocking and spinning away from Hugo’s blades with utter confidence and no small amount of skill.

Hugo did not answer, his only response was to blast the red magic away with a veil of darkness, parrying a strike and bringing his other blade down with such force the window warrior stumbled, almost driven to his knees. Hugo blocked the warrior’s sweeping sword strike and stabbed him through the shoulder, before mercilessly slashing across the male’s thigh. A move meant to incapacitate. The warrior dropped to one knee but somehow still managed to block Hugo’s killing blow.

“Commander! Stop! She will be safer with us. If you take her back to the palace, the Queen will kill her! You know she will! We need Diamond to live! All of us do!” he panted, desperation in his voice now.

Diamond gasped as she saw the warrior’s hand drop to his boot and grasp the handle of a small concealed knife.

“Hugo!” she yelled, fighting her bonds with all her might. Pain screeched through Diamond’s wrists as the silk tightened. She screamed. It was going to cut off her hands!

Instead of killing the warrior, Hugo kicked his assailant in the chest sending him sprawling. There was a solid thud as the warrior’s head smacked into the wall and he stilled. Hugo immediately twisted to Diamond, dropping to his knees in front of her. Blood ran from her wounds, dripping down the chair arms.

“Keep still,” he ordered, pulling a dagger and slicing through the silken rope.

Sobbing with relief, she sagged against him before the pain started in earnest. Her fingers burned as blood rushed back in. Diamond whimpered, not sure what to do with herself.

Thoughts of the window warrior escaped them both. Hugo quickly slashed strips of material off his tunic. Dropping his blades he firmly bound her wrists, trying to staunch
the heavy flow of blood. For a moment he leaned his forehead against hers and gripped each wrist as she fought to control her panicked sobs.

“Shh. It’s alright. You’ll be fine now. Breathe, Diamond. In…out…with me. That’s it.” Slowly her mind returned to her. With her head leaning against Hugo’s, they shared the same warm breath. She closed her eyes, her body responding to his. Her breathing slowed until it mirrored his own and she could swear she heard the distant beat of his heart.

The scuff of boots on the wooden floor had Hugo on his feet in front of her, blades ready. Diamond looked on as he faced the bleeding warrior, his face icy and calm.

“We are not your enemy,” the warrior panted. Equally calm and with slow intent he sheathed his own blades.

“Kill me if you must. But you know if you take her back to the palace, the Queen will destroy her. Let her come with me, commander. Please. I give you my word I will keep her safe,” the warrior appealed, holding his bloodied hands out to Diamond.

Hugo looked down at her, his brow bunched. Diamond shook her head frantically and grabbed at his tunic. He couldn’t be considering it.

Author Karen Tomlinson

Karen Tomlinson is the author of The Goddess and the Guardians series of Young Adult fantasy books. Book one A Bond of Venom and Magic will be released October 14th 2016.

Karen has always been an avid reader. Her taste in books is eclectic but she likes nothing better than an exciting fantasy, set in a new and magical world. She lives in Derbyshire, England, with her husband, twin girls and her dalmatian, Poppy. Karen trained as a nurse and currently works as a resuscitation and clinical skills trainer, this involves training a wide variety of health care professionals and medical students in acute patient care. In addition to writing, and reading whenever she can, Karen likes to keep active. She has been training at Shotokan karate since being thirteen, likes walking, mountain biking and (for something completely different) cake decorating. She is currently working on book two in The Goddess and the Guardians series.

About me!

As soon as I could read I spent hours getting lost in the new worlds books could give me. Spending my pocket money had to be done (obviously) but not on sweets, well, not many…I spent my money on books. Back then it was Enid Blyton’s Famous Five which sparked my young mind. I didn’t rest until I had the whole set, then I migrated to the secret seven…(there was no Harry Potter then) As a teenager I would trawl through all my mum and dad’s discarded books. It was probably highly inappropriate for a thirteen year old to be reading swoony Mills and Boon romances followed by Ian Flemming, Alistair Maclean and Wilbur Smith!
Because I read anything and everything I could get my hands on back then, I now have an eclectic taste in books. I will read anything that catches my eye and absolutely love illustrated book covers! In my late teens I discovered fantasy and that genre has stayed my firm favourite. I am and will always remain a complete sucker for a fantasy with kick ass characters and worlds steeped in magic and romance!

My Review

 This was such a beautiful yet turbulent love story.

One fateful night changes two lives forever. Avery enters the ocean excited to catch the next wave. Kai enters the ocean to rescue a drowning girl. She survives. he doesn’t.

Now Avery is stuck. She can’t move past her guilt. I felt so sad for Avery. She’s consumed with survivor’s guilt. Her friends feel she should be over it. Her boyfriend is all out of understanding. If only she could see the boys face.

And Kai. Yes, he’s dead. He now has another purpose beyond life. But rules won’t let him help Avery. If only he could tell her that it’s okay. That he’s okay.

These two character’s seemed destined to be together. I thought long and hard about how the author could make that happen. Then I continued listening to the story to find out. As I listened, I forgot about focusing on the ending as I was swept away by the adversities these two had to face.

I enjoyed this as an audible.  Dana Dae as Avery and Zachary Webber as Kai each tell their character’s point of view in the story, doing a nice job of developing their personalities.  As the story deepens they also do a great job of expressing emotions without it feeling forced. I’m glad I chose this format to enjoy the book.

It was a pleasant surprise that I was so moved by this story. I really connected with Avery and Kai and hoped they would have a happy ever after.

Whether you choose to read this book or listen to it, I’m sure you’ll be swept away like I was.

4 Stars

Kai met Avery only once–in the moment he died saving her life. Now when he’s not using his new healing powers to help people, he watches helplessly as Avery’s life is unraveled by his death. To help her, he risks everything by breaking the rules, dangerously blurring the barriers between life and death.

My Review

I’m always game to read another supernatural horror story. This sounded like a good one.

A couple moves to an isolated house. They’re unaware it has a history. Something waits for them, biding it’s time. And the terror begins when Kevin goes into the basement. Guess he doesn’t know about the rules of horror.

Sounds good, doesn’t it? It is. It has an eerie atmosphere, some odd character’s to make you wonder, and a truly nasty entity up to no good.

I did have an issue with the main protagonist, Kevin. He kept secrets from his wife, Sandra. I don’t get why men keep secrets to supposedly protect us women. Maybe if Kevin had told Sandra what was occurring, she might have been better prepared for what came after her.

The author mentions that some will live and some will die. Ooh, I love it when I hear that. It adds a level of suspense when you don’t know if the character or characters you’ve connected with will survive.

This is a creepy story for a late night read. Alone. During a storm. LOL

Excerpt:

He turned to walk back home. A woman in a black dress stood a few paces in front of him. The woman’s eyes were black marbles embedded in a sunken face. Her white hair hung down over her shoulders like spaghetti strings, and there were more cracks in her face than there were on a broken sidewalk. A foul stench seemed to follow her around – the scent of rotting meat.

Kevin grimaced and held his nose. The horrid odor clung to him like stench on a decomposed corpse. “What in the –”

“Leave that place now,” the woman’s voice gurgled.

He took a step back, fanned his nose, and spat. “You’re the woman I almost hit on the road.” He narrowed his eyes and scratched his head. “How – I mean, what in the –”

“Don’t give in to the dreams or listen to him. You can’t defeat it.” She turned and pushed her way through a hedge of high bushes to the right of the highway.

“Miss, what are you talking about?” He pinched his nose to keep the woman’s stench at bay and followed her through a stretch of woods, coming to an open field. A steep hill was not far away. “Hey, Miss, where are you?” he called, looking around. She was nowhere in sight.

She’s obviously crazy. I wonder if her family knows she’s out here. If she has family at all… he fanned his face and blew out a breath. That smell… how did it get on her?

Squawking came from somewhere above him. Kevin looked up to see hawks circling the area as if they owned it.

Kevin started up the hill when a hawk swooped down. He ducked. The bird soared past him and came up squawking, wings flapping and beak open. Kevin covered his face with his arms and ran. The animal’s talons, long and sharp, reached for his arms. Kevin sidestepped to the right and caught hold of a wing. He hurled the hawk with all his strength. The bird fluttered wildly before flying away.

He sat and breathed heavily while watching the sky in case the hawk came back. After resting, he climbed the hill and surveyed the view. There was, on the other side of the hill, a cemetery – the biggest he had ever seen. Headstones, grave markers, and crosses spread out over at least five-hundred acres. He descended the hill for a better view. Something snapped and he fell.

“Oh, shit!” he screamed. He clenched his jaw against the pain and fought to keep back tears. He pried the mouth of an animal trap from his leg and staggered to his feet, managing to limp a few feet before falling again. He winced in pain.

A hawk flew down and perched on a headstone.

I’m going to die only a few yards from a cemetery. At least they won’t have to carry me far.

The bird raised a wing as if it was ready to attack.

“No, I’m going to fight. I refuse to die out here,” Kevin said under his breath. He struggled to his feet. A knife-stabbing ache went through his leg. He went down on one knee. He slowly shook his head back and forth. “Must go on.” He got to his feet and glanced at the headstone. The hawk was gone. He hobbled to the hill.

I can make it if I crawl. A shadow loomed and covered the area in front of him. He heard heavy breathing from somewhere nearby. He stood still, balancing his weight on the uninjured leg. Something began snarling. He turned around slowly. Two menacing black eyes stared into his.

Eeper Weeper

(Whitechapel Paranormal Society #0.5) by E.J. Stevens

The great and
prestigious man of science, Doctor Jameson Foster Hadley had
somehow made a mistake. I wasn’t good and I wasn’t normal. His
experiment had failed.

The tedium and terrors of Josephine “Jo” Hadley’s existence within
the stone walls of London’s Bethnal Asylum are interrupted by a
strange visitor, Cora Drummond, a woman who demands to interview
one of the asylum’s most insane residents. The patient’s rantings
include tales of ghosts and demons, but it is the bizarre,
near-riotous muttering of prophetic nursery rhymes that follow Jo
throughout the asylum wards that is most illuminating to Miss
Drummond.

Eeeper Weeper, chimney sweeper. Had a wife, but couldn’t keep
her…

Days later, Jo and her adoptive father receive an invitation to
attend an exclusive tea at the prestigious Whitehall Club. But the
request for Jo’s attendance is more than it might seem. She has
caught the attention of a secret branch of government working
directly for the queen.

Will Jo Hadley’s unusual talent for inciting prophetic nursery
rhymes prove useful to the crown? She is given one chance to
demonstrate her worth to the Special Paranormal Research Branch,
but this is one mission that even the most highly trained
operatives might not survive.

Eeper Weeper is a prequel short story in the Whitechapel

Interview with Author Lauren Carr

  1. Lauren, Killer in the Band is full of murder and intrigue in what appears to be a more sedate setting than your previous best-selling mysteries of a horse farm and orchard. What made you shift gears with this latest Lovers in Crime Mystery?

LC: For each mystery, I chose the setting after coming up with the murder plot. I tailored the characters to fit with the mystery. Lovers in Crime is a small town setting. I grew up in Chester, West Virginia, and there are quite a few farms in and around the Ohio Valley.

I introduced readers to Joshua Thornton in my first book, A Small Case of Murder. Readers of that book may remember that Joshua’s mother grew up on a dairy farm and I remind readers in Killer in the Band that Joshua comes from a long line of farmers. Therefore, it was destined that eventually, a Lovers in Crime Mystery had to be set on a farm.

  1. Did setting Killer in the Band on a farm present any challenges that you didn’t encounter with your other series?

LC: Every book presents its own challenges. As a writer, I embrace them. That’s why I love writing.

The setting sets the tone of the book. I myself grew up on a farm. So I was familiar with the setting in that aspect. However, I did not grow up on a quarter horse farm. Therefore, I had to do a lot of research into that part of the setting.

  1. You always have such interesting characters in your series—especially furry four-legged ones. There’s Gnarly in the Mac Faraday Mysteries, Irving and Admiral in the Lovers in Crime Mysteries. Are there any new four-legged characters that readers will meet in Killer in the Band?

LC: What’s a farm without critters! Since I created Gnarly, based on my own Australian shepherd named Ziggy, people are always telling me stories about their animals and animals they have heard of.

Gulliver, an appaloosa horse, is based on a horse who I saw in a YouTube video who would let himself out of his stall and then let all the other horses loose, except for one—a mare who happened to be his mother! Seeing this video, I cracked up and called a friend of mine who has a horse farm to ask about it. She said Houdini horses are really not that uncommon, but suggested that this one must have some mommy issues since he doesn’t free his mother.

Charley, the Watch Rooster, is based on a rooster who used to belong to a friend of mine. Yep, his name is really Charley. My friend said that he was given to her niece as a chick at Easter and grew so big that they couldn’t keep him at their suburban home, so they sent him to live with relatives who lived in a small town in southern West Virginia. I’m sure you heard of the neighborhood dog who chases everyone and who everyone is afraid of. Well, that became Charley the Rooster. She said one day a store keeper decided he’d had it with Charley and went after him with a broom. The fight between the store owner and Charley spilled out into the middle of the street in this small town where the editor of the local newspaper snapped a picture of it. The next day, Charley and the store owner ended up on the front page of the newspaper.

When I heard that, there was no way I couldn’t put Charley in my book.

  1. What led to the decision to bring J.J. Thornton, the identical twin of Murphy Thornton from the Thorny Rose Mysteries, by the way, home to Chester? Is he going to remain with the Lovers in Crime?

JJ.’s character came about in my first mystery book, A Small Case of Murder, a Joshua Thornton Mystery. At that time, he was seventeen years old. I knew then that he would be a lawyer, like his dad. As his age, it was time for him to come home. But notice that J.J. is not simply a younger version of Joshua, nor is he a duplicate of his twin Murphy. Yes, he is identical in looks, but that’s it. J.J. is the intellectual of the twins. He is into the arts. We find out that he was a musical prodigy. He’s a bleeding heart, which leads to conflicts between him and both Joshua and Cameron.

  1. How about with his twin Murphy? Do you have any plans to bring J.J. and Murphy together in their mystery?

Oh, yes! But you’ll need to stay turned for that.

  1. Your Mac Faraday series, the Thorny Rose Mysteries, as well as the Lovers in Crime series, have all garnered a loyal following. We will still be seeing these series continue as well, won’t we?

Each series will continue to grow on their own with interconnecting mysteries occasionally. In January, there will be a new Thorny Rose Mystery, A Fine Year for Murder.

In A Fine Year for Murder, Jessica Faraday and her husband, Murphy Thornton, dive into the cold case murder at a family owned winery.

After ten months of marital bliss, Jessica Faraday and Murphy Thornton are still discovering and adjusting to their life together. Settled in their new home, everything appears to be perfect … except in the middle of the night when, in darkest shadows of her subconscious, a deep secret from Jessica’s past creeps to the surface to make her strike out at Murphy.

When investigative journalist Dallas Walker tells the couple about her latest case, known as the Pine Bridge Massacre, they realize Jessica may have witnessed the murder of a family living near a winery owned by distant relatives she was visiting and suppressed the memory.

Determined to uncover the truth and find justice for the murder victims, Jessica and Murphy return to the scene of the crime with Dallas Walker, a spunky bull-headed Texan. Can this family reunion bring closure for a community touched by tragedy or will this prickly get-together bring an end to the Thorny Rose couple?

As long as readers are clamoring for mysteries, I’ll be writing them.

problems. Unfortunately, for the past few years, as the object of his affection

her.
CASEY’S FAMILY IS IN THE WITNESS PROTECTION PROGRAM. Safety
has to be their only priority. Their cover has been blown before, so Casey

Book Excerpt:

Wipeout!
Jacob Kent stepped out of his car as he scanned
the fair on the other side of the parking lot, his heart pounding. As with many
country fairs, the parking lot was no more than an abused pasture. This one was
about the size of two football fields. Fair employees decked in bright yellow
directed the early trickle of cars to their temporary berths. Jacob ignored
them, choosing instead a parking spot near the exit. Anticipating the possible
need for a quick getaway outweighed a pimply teen’s futile attempts to redirect
him.
He regarded the rides twirling and
spinning above and around the strolling families. Despite the morning sun, the
lights flashed merrily, beckoning to all. At
11 a.m. it wasn’t crowded, but he knew that would soon change.
Locking his car, he slowly picked his way through the beaten grass, combing all
directions for a clue the girls were there. As the unmistakable sound of
carnival music floated toward him on the warm summer breeze, he reviewed
his plan.
First, he would walk through the fair to
familiarize himself with the layout they had printed out. Then he would adjust

~~~~~
their escape route to where he parked the car. After assessing the grounds, he
would plant himself somewhere along the concourse, and watch the crowd. That’s
how he had always found Casey in the past, and that’s how he was going to find
her again.
A voice came over the loudspeaker, momentarily
dimming the carnival noise. “Would the owner of a red ford truck, license plate
AIP537, please return to your vehicle? Your lights are on.”
Jacob tensed. Was that some kind of clue? He
looked over the parking lot. No, he could see the lights of the red truck from
here. He smiled ruefully to himself.
Get a grip, Kent, he thought as he
watched a portly balding man march exasperatedly toward the truck.
He sighed. Intellectually, he had to
acknowledge they might have pieced together a bunch of randomly forgotten items
into a fantastical story, but emotionally, he couldn’t help but believe the
items served an ultimate purpose. If The Herd was here, he was going to find
them. He also knew if he wasn’t careful, he could spend the entire day jumping
at shadows and following dead ends.
Like that little commotion over by the edge
of the fair.
To his over-active
imagination, that game of tag could look like a child trying to escape from the
evil clutches of—
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, WIPEOUT!” sang out over the
loudspeaker.
His head jerked up. As the pounding drums
from the familiar song drowned out the carnival music, all doubt was erased.
The loudspeaker was sending out a warning. His eyes darted back toward the
commotion he had noticed. That was no game of tag. That was a child trying to
escape a man in hot pursuit. Jacob couldn’t be positive at this
distance, but it sure looked like Robin.
With his heart in his throat, he broke
into a run, zigzagging between cars, trying to intercept the fleeing child as
it headed toward the side of the parking lot. In this surreal moment, the same
song they had used for obstacle course training was being piped out like
background music to a scene in a movie. But this scene was real, where a real
menace was gaining. Caught in his own nightmare, Jacob was watching Robin run
for her life, and he was not close enough to help.
As the predator and prey crossed the area
between the fair and the parking lot, the longer legs of the adult closed the
gap between them, but once they reached the cars, the advantage became hers.
Robin’s small size and training put some distance between them as she dodged
around vehicles. However, her constant change of direction made it difficult
for Jacob to maintain a course of interception.
Watching Robin’s progress, Jacob realized she
was trying to head back toward the fair. Silently applauding Robin’s decision
to get closer to other people who could help her, Jacob altered his course
accordingly.
So did Robin’s pursuer.
Suddenly, her stalker eliminated the space
between them by clambering up and over two pickup trucks, and landing an arm’s
length away. Skidding, Robin veered around another vehicle with the man on her
tail. As Jacob frantically tried to reach her, a brunette Sam suddenly popped
out from behind a car and neatly took the man out with one magnificent sweep of
a skateboard to the head.
Where did she come from? A stunned Jacob skidded to a stop, gasping for breath, his
chest burning.
With a quick high-five, the sisters raced back
to the fair. Jacob tried in vain to get their attention, but he hadn’t quite recovered
enough breath to formulate sounds louder than gasps. He shook his head as he
tried to calm the burning in his lungs. He was a wreck, but they were able to run
off.
And I was going to save them? He weakly chuckled. What was I thinking?
Sobering, he trotted over to the man who
was staggering to his feet. With rage marshalling all of his strength, Jacob
drew back and smashed his fist into the man’s face. The unexpected pain in his
fist was nothing compared to the satisfaction of watching Robin’s former threat
drop like an anchor.
Shaking the pain out of his hand, Jacob aimed a
vindictive kick at the ribs of his girls’ attacker. Any qualms he might
ordinarily have about hitting a man when he’s down were nonexistent when it
came to someone threatening his family.
Satisfied the man was no longer a danger,
he took off in the direction he had seen his girls disappear, trying to
calm the fear rising in his chest. He doubted this man had come alone. The
girls probably knew that, too, and would be hiding. How was he going to find
them before their pursuers did?
The light glinting off the speaker perched atop
a telephone pole caught his eye. Jacob skidded to a stop and stared at it. Of
course.
When Robin had been trying to escape, that speaker had been
blasting out WipeOut, but now he only heard carnival music. With a grin,
Jacob decided it was time to stop believing in coincidences. Someone at the
fair must be helping them. If he found that person, he’d be able to find the
fugitives.
My teaser from page 62 in the paperback.
I also want to share the author’s Dedication with  you:
“This book is dedicated to everyone who ever turned down a food because it might hurt them, to everyone who ever dreaded destroying a bathroom, and to everyone who ever stayed lonely because they didn’t want to embarass themselves.”
“You are not alone.”
My Review
I couldn’t stop reading this once I started. But, I did. I went and got my 21 year old son and we sat down to read it together. He experienced plenty of bullying in school and expressed how lucky he would have been to have this book when he was younger.
We took turns reading it out loud and got into a couple of giggling fits whenever one of us said the word Poop. A fun character is Poop. Look at that cover. Isn’t he kind of cute? How creative of the author to use something people whisper about to engage young readers on a touchy subject.
5 Stars
Synopsis
Poor Liam. On the very first day of fifth grade, in a strange new town, and a large new school, he interrupts everyone to bolt out and into the girl’s bathroom. There, down in the far stall, in pain from a horrible stomach condition, he meets a new friend: Poop. The cheery little guy says he’s there to help Liam through a tough time in his life. But what does Liam need help with? And who, in their right mind, would want Poop for a friend?
AMAZON
I cracked up when I set up this picture. I have a bunch more books by this author and plan to share reviews for all of them between now and Christmas. Be sure to keep an eye out for my posts. You’ll want to grab the books for your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews……etc., or maybe for yourself!
