When the campground becomes the scene of the crime, will Noelle’s peaceful summer go up in flames?

Down on her luck event planner Noelle Cooper is returning to rural Maine to do the one thing she swore she would never do: run her family’s campground. But it’s only for the summer, and the timing couldn’t be better–she’s lost her job and has nowhere to live. She hopes that a change of scenery will be the thing she needs to regroup and reinvent herself.

But Noelle’s plans go up in smoke on her first morning back when she stumbles upon the body of her high school rival. She barely has time to process this before she comes face-to-face with her ex-boyfriend, meets the handsome county sheriff, and is questioned by an intimidating state trooper who gives her the creeps.

While she’s busy dealing with a group of pushy campers who insist that the murder means she must cancel the annual bonfire, Noelle becomes the prime suspect in the murder investigation. She’s convinced that someone is feeding false information to the police and is determined to clear her name.

With the help of her podcast-obsessed cousin, her anxious rescue beagle, and a few eccentric campers, Noelle compiles a list of other suspects and pokes around to uncover the real killer.

Can Noelle prove her innocence before getting tossed in jail? Or is she playing with fire? Read Campfires & Corpses now to find out.

*** This clean, contemporary cozy mystery is set in a small town with quirky characters and lovable dogs. Cozy mystery fans will enjoy dissecting the suspects’ alibis and following the clues along with Noelle and her gang. ***

Book Details:

  RENEWALS

by Gregory F. DeLaurier

Category:  Adult Fiction (18+), 276 pages
Genre:  literary fiction, amateur sleuths
Publisher:  Independently published/Gregory F. DeLaurier
Release date:   February 2025
Content Rating:  R. My book is rated R for one attempted child sexual abuse, not explicit. There is bad language throughout.

Book Description:

When academic Richard returns to his hometown he discovers a scam that has ruined the city, he must unite his friends and family to uncover the truth, but this pits him against the scam’s architect, aging but violent drug kingpin Giacomo Duchamps, who could destroy everyone Richard loves should he fail.

Renewals captures the nature of a hardscrabble small town and those who live and struggle there, in this pitch perfect tale of corruption and renewal. It is the story of the renewal of a city but also the renewal of the lives of those who are lost or oppressed; a young woman trapped in sexual abuse and exploitation, a young ex-con searching for a better life, and others.

How I Came to Write This Novel

The idea for this novel has floated around my brain for many years. I grew up in a small, working-class city in northern New York. While not a wealthy place it had a thriving downtown, with stores, restaurants, bars, a movie theater. On any Saturday it would be packed with shoppers and teenagers, like myself, hanging out. But in the early 1970s it got ‘Urban Renewaled’; all the buildings were torn down and replaced by new ugly buildings and for some reason a huge wall around the whole area. It was meant to be a pedestrian mall, but noone came and the downtown died.

This has always bothered me, and so I thought a fictional account of why this happened, complete with graft, corruption, and bad guys might work. The book follows the main protagonist Richard, an academic who has returned to his hometown, as he and a motley crew of new and old friends investigate what happened, at their own risk from a ‘gang that couldn’t shoot straight’ array of villains.

Richard, Brenda (a friend hardened by life), Itchy (a gay guitar genius), Theresa (a sexually abused and exploited young woman), Marat (a young ex-con) do indeed uncover what happened as the tale follows their amateur sleuthing, and hopefully renewal of the city.

However I chose the title RenewalS as this is the story of not only the renewal of a city but of people as well. I’ve always rooted for the underdog, and there are many of them here, who for many reasons find themselves on the down side of life.

To me, the most interesting character in the story is Theresa. Sexually abused by her father, tortured by her mother, she is rescued by her cousin Teddy (the subject of the novel’s Prologue). But as she matures she is sexually exploited by him, pimped out to a rapacious old crook named Leonard Vivelamore for whom Teddy works. Richard rescues her, but traumatized as she is, Teddy still holds sway over her and convinces her to tell him what Richard and his pals are up to. She is found out and returns to Teddy. But finally, not easily and not without misgivings, she breaks free of him and slowly discovers her own autonomy.

I grew to love and admire Theresa, yet others follow their own path to renewal. Marat, with the support of Richard, discovers he is able and intelligent. Brenda leaves her regrets behind and opens up to life. Richard’s corrupt brother, in on the doings of the crooks, repents and shows both courage and bravery.

There are other tales of renewal, but will save for readers to discover.

In all, Renewals is serious but leavened with a great deal of humor. It is more than a who-done-it (though that is there). It is also a meditation on hope and life.

Enjoy this peek inside:

“They want a fight,” Townson growls, his voice steady but burning with conviction, “so we’ll give them one— but not

because we crave revenge!” His face contorts with emotion, locking eyes with his people. “Not because we thirst for blood!”

He raises a talon high into the air, his black claws curling into a fist with a loud, menacing crack. “But because we are family, and we stand together against any foe!”

Tears well in the eyes of many in the crowd, stirred by a fierce mix of fear and inspiration.

“BECAUSE WE ARE ALL DEGENERATES!” His voice erupts, a flash of fury in his eyes, as a supernatural wind howls from his aura. “WANTED BY NONE—” he roars, his words shaking the room, “AT HOME WITH EACH OTHER!”

The Dark Side Of Magic

By Marilyn Levinson

Genre: Middle Grade

Synopsis

Fifth grader Rufus is unhappy when he has to attend a Samhain celebration with his mother, Grandma, and Aunt Ruth instead of going Trick or Treat with his friends. He’s thrilled when, later that night, his Uncle Hector shows up outside his window and offers to take him for a ride in the sky. Rufus’s family have told him that his uncle is evil and he should have nothing to do with Hector, but Rufus is enthralled by his uncle’s fabulous realm that includes a small zoo and a stable of horses. He’s less interested in learning about his uncle’s businesses that he, as his uncle’s heir apparent, will inherit one day. Then Uncle Hector tells Rufus he has to do something for him, something Rufus finds impossible to do. Uncle Hector wields his magical powers to force Rufus’s hand, but Rufus’s little sister finds out and encourages him to ask for help. It’s Grandma who decides what they must do, and it’s not something Uncle Hector ever thought would happen.

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
Uncle Hector moved the chair he’d been sitting in and dropped onto the couch beside me. “Now Rufus, I think you have to admit that I’ve been very generous to you—teaching you spells; taking you to visit your little girlfriend.”
“I guess.”
“And I have every intention of leaving every penny I’m worth to you when I eventually depart this life.”
He waited until I nodded.
“You will appreciate my generosity more when you are older and realize it takes strength and cunning to make your way in the world.”
“So you’ve told me.”
Uncle Hector pursed his lips. He was clearly not pleased with my lack of enthusiasm. “Anyway, the time has come for you to do something for me.”
“Like what?” The butterflies in my stomach zipped around at top speed, making me dizzy and nauseous at the same time.
Uncle Hector smiled. It made him look scary. “It’s really a small matter, Rufus, or I wouldn’t ask you to do it. Especially since it’s something you can manage very easily.”
I gulped. “What exactly are we talking about?”
“Ah.” Sparks flew as Uncle Hector rubbed his hands together. “There’s a book of spells missing from my library. I’ve searched high and low for another copy—in bookstores all over the world—but I haven’t been able to find one.
“I don’t know what book you’re talking about.”
“Of course you don’t. Very few witches have seen Incantations Extraordinaires, much less own a copy. It contains spells, both extraordinary and horrific. Every spell is complicated and difficult to master.
“Many years ago I found a copy of Incantations Extraordinaires.” Uncle Hector glowered at me. “The very same day I acquired the book, someone stole it from me.”
“Who?” The word shot out before I could think. I hadn’t meant to ask. I knew the answer even before that horrible smile returned to his face.
“Your grandmother, Lavinia Haven. This was many years ago, before my magical powers had fully developed and I could protect it properly. Interfering witch!”
She took it to stop you from casting horrific spells.
“I suppose so,” Uncle Hector said as if I’d spoken aloud. I’d forgotten to shield my thoughts. “And now, when I’m at the top of my form, I require a wondrous spell, a spell that can only be found in Incantations Extraordinaires.”
I shrugged. “Okay, but you just said the book of spells isn’t in Grandma and Aunt Ruth’s shop.”
Uncle Hector tapped my head. “Think, Rufus. If the book isn’t in their shop, where would it be?
“I don’t know. In their . . .?”
His piercing gaze forced me to finish my sentence. “House.”
“Of course! In your grandmother’s house, which is next door to your house. A house you go in and out of with great frequency.”
“You want me to steal the book?”
Uncle Hector shrugged. “To retrieve what is mine.”
“But—” The butterflies that flew around my stomach when I was nervous or afraid zoomed straight up to my brain. “I can’t! Grandma would never forgive me. Besides, I haven’t the slightest idea where it is.”
I suddenly felt a blinding pain in my head. “I think you’ll do exactly as you’re told—if you don’t want bad things to start happening to people you love.”
I slumped in the corner of the limo as Nero drove me to the corner two blocks from my house. What an idiot I’d been! Uncle Hector was everything Grandma had said and worse! He’d used me—showed me a few spells, took me to see Danielle—so I’d be impressed by it all and get him what he was really after—the book of powerful spells that Grandma had taken from him.
I’ve spent most of my life as a performing musician and band
instrument repair technician, but that doesn’t mean I’m pigeon-holed into one
mold. I’ve been a university professor, belly dancer, craftsperson, soap maker,
singer, rock band artist, jewelry maker, lifeguard, swim coach, and whatever
else I feel like exploring. As one of my students said to me once, “Life’s
too short to ignore the opportunities.” I have no intention of ever
stopping so welcome to my story world. I hope you enjoy it!
Book Details:
THE WEB OF TIME
by Flavia Brunetti
Category:  YA Fiction (Ages 13-17),  298 pages
GenreGrounded Fantasy
Publisher: Blue House Literary
Release date:  May 2025
Content RatingG + M: While this is fully G, it does touch on matters including physical abuse and trauma. This is done in a very gentle way, but perhaps worth noting.
Book Description:
Far beneath the ground, a web quietly spins. The threads are keeping time, marking history. What’s done is done. Until now.
Protected by the gods and powering the three Great Portals of Art, Language, and Kindness, The Web of Time rearranges itself as humans change their minds, fall in love, or cause empires to rise and fall. When the Great Portals close from the world, time begins erasing itself, histories start to disappear, Earth falls into chaos, and the gods don’t know how to stop it—until Jack meets Anna.
Anna is a passionate and solitary writer who is protected by her companion, Nafusa of Libya, the cat god. When Jack, a young painter harboring a traumatic past, falls through the Great Portal of Art in Tunis, he stumbles into Anna, and his fate.
Helped and hindered by a rotating cast of deities, the two embark on a journey that connects three ancient cities in different times: Rome, Tunis, and Tripoli. They realize that it is Anna’s gift for healing words and Jack’s natural talent for drawing places as they were that can reinstate the Great Portals and restore the world’s balance, but some of the darker gods who thrive on chaos will stop at nothing to derail their quest. As time tears faster than they can heal it, Anna and Jack must come together in time to save history, and the possibility of a future.
  1. Do you have another profession besides writing?
I do. I’m also a humanitarian aid worker. Part of why I’ve traveled and lived in different countries over the years is because of that job, and those experiences are absorbed into my writing, sometimes not on purpose!
  1. How do you balance your time as an author with your other work?
Balance is something that I often struggle with, not only dividing my time as an author and with a job, but also ensuring I make time to do other things that nourish me, like reading, or spending time with my friends, or taking a long walk along the Aurelian Walls here in Rome.
What works for me is making lists, because that helps me to get everything out of my head and onto a piece of paper, so I don’t feel I have to keep everything at the forefront of my mind. That list also includes things like, take a break, watch a show, finish reading that chapter, have a lovely dinner. And then I have a new rule about not giving myself a hard time when I can’t get through everything! If there are things I have to get through but that I’ll tend to drag my feet about, like editing, I use the advice I got from a friend some time ago: I just start, promising myself that I’ll do it for ten minutes to start with and that’ll be a win. Most of the time, getting started really is the hardest part, as trite as that sounds, and much more often than not once I’m in the swing of things I’ll keep working through it.
  1. Writers often use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?
I always have a notebook with me and I grew up scribbling, but these days, if I’m honest, I’ll often jot things down in my notes app on my phone because it’s so much faster. Then, I’ll move it to my laptop to expand on the idea. I’ll always read my last version out loud to myself because I think hearing things helps process differently. In all of this, I miss the paper element, and I think paper itself is the most powerful thing, but I have to admit I often fall into the “it’s so much faster to type” category. I do always keep a notebook still with me and my agenda is a physical one I write in, but I’ve even noticed recently my writing hand gets tired much faster these days because I’m less used to physical writing. So I have a commitment to change this back to writing, at least shorter pieces, more on paper!
  1. What is your next project?
When WOT is out, you’ll find me hard at work on the sequel. The book can stand alone, because as a reader, I tend to love series that intertwine but also wrap up their individual storylines, but the world we’re meeting in this first book isn’t done with me yet, and I hope the readers will feel the same!
I’ll be sharing as I start to work on research for the second book (which, right now, is set to take place in Egypt, in a place we already see in this first book, but that’s all I can say!) You can find me on Substack and Instagram to talk WOT, places and how we define ourselves by them, cultural cross-pollination, and the occasional is-curly-hair-better-than-straight-hair convo.
  1. Do you snack while writing? Favorite snack?
I snack all the time! I’m a big proponent of “a little treat”. I love sweets but have some blood sugar issues so I try to always pair protein with it, so my go-to snack is often a piece of parmigiano and some cookies to much on.
Meet Author Flavia Brunetti:
Born just outside of Rome, Flavia grew up bouncing back and forth between Italy and California and has lived between a myriad other countries, so her writing often revolves around place and identity and is usually written on a plane where she inevitably apologizes to the person sitting next to her for bumping their elbow. She is the author of the novel All the Way to Italy. Her second novel, The Web of Time, a YA grounded fantasy adventure set in Rome, Tunis, and Tripoli, will be published by Blue House Literary in May 2025.
Today, Flavia continues learning about the world while working for a humanitarian organization and getting lost in her Eternal City, writing flash fiction and non-fiction stories, and connecting with other readers, writers, and adventurers (also the armchair travel variety).
