A Bite Above The Rest

MY REVIEW

There be monster’s in Samhain, Wisconsin. Big Ones. Little ones. Some with wings and fangs and fins. Not such a surprise for a town that keeps their decorations up year round. They even wear their costumes every day. But wait…… I mentioned monsters so…. are they really costumes?

Caleb was not happy about moving to Samhain. The town was weird. The residents were even weirder. His refusal to buy into the Halloween obsession doesn’t earn him any points. He does find a friend in Tai and that’s going to be important as he discovers the secrets of his new town.

Caleb and Tai were such a delight. I loved every bit of their investigations into the strange goings on. Their texts back and forth and the quirky illustrations just added to this super fun book.

In my younger years I would have devoured A Bite Above The Rest. As an adult, I did eat it up, smiling and laughing all the way.

When Caleb’s mom decides they are moving to her childhood home in Wisconsin, Caleb is not thrilled. Moving schools, states, and time zones would be bad enough, but Mom’s hometown is Samhain, a small and ridiculously kitschy place where every day is Halloween.

Caleb is not a fan of Halloween when it only happens once a year, so Halloween-obsessed Samhain is really not the place for him. How is he supposed to cope with kids wearing costumes to school every single day ? And how about the fact that the mayor is so committed to the bit that City Hall is only open from sundown to sunup to accommodate his so-called vampirism? Sure enough, Caleb becomes an outcast at school for refusing to play along with the spooky tradition like the other sixth graders. Luckily, he manages to find a friend in fellow misfit Tai, and just in time, because things are getting weird in Samhain…or make that weird er .

But there’s no way the mayor is an actual vampire, and their teacher absolutely cannot really be a werewolf—right? Caleb discovers Samhain is so much stranger than he ever could have imagined. As one of the only people who realizes what’s happening, can he save a town that doesn’t want saving?

Don’t Go To Sleep

MY REVIEW

I’m a big fan of true crime. Whether reading about it or watching documentaries. Though this book is fiction, The Axeman Of New Orleans was very real.

I enjoy historical mysteries. Especially those with a horror and supernatural element to them. The setting for this story is New Orleans during the Spanish Flu epidemic. I could relate after Covid. A serial killer is adding to his victim count and he has a specific type. Italians and Italian Americans. That doesn’t mean he’ll stick to the criteria and fear spreads.

I wasn’t expecting a supernatural twist and it didn’t quite hit for me. The main characters were interesting but for some reason I couldn’t get that anxious feeling for them that I should have. I did find the epidemic intriguing. And I was very curious about the killings. Enough to do some googling of my own.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and would try more from this author.

It doesn’t help that there also appears to be a mad man on the loose in her neighborhood. The attacks started as burglaries but soon escalate to cold blooded murder. There’s a killer out there, and the police can’t seem to figure out how to stop him.

Gianna enlists the help of her friend Enzo to investigate. And as they study the crimes, they see a common link between the victims, and Gianna can’t help but wonder if it’s the same man who attacked her family years before.

As Gianna gets closer to the killer, she discovers a connection between them that she never would have suspected.

Night Of Madness

MY REVIEW

For slasher horror themed books, this one is right up my alley. Sure, it’s YA, but don’t let that fool you. The danger and mayhem real and intense.

The plot may not sound like a new one. Just you wait. Young influencers are selected to survive an overnight contest taking place on the set of a horror movie. Whoever lasts until morning wins a bunch of money. You expect things to go wrong, and they do. Very wrong.

What’s my bread and butter is the character driven story. You put several strangers together, place then in a life or death situation, and wait to see who survives. I enjoy trying to guess who steps up, who cracks under pressure and who is the first to lose. I sorted out who I wanted to win. But…… this is a horror thriller and nothing is guaranteed. There are no rules. And the person running the show likes that idea.

I really liked Night Of Madness. Ryan Douglas is now on my author’s list to keep an eye on.

Killing Sadie

MY REVIEW

We start out knowing Sadie was murdered. We know that her boyfriend, Ben, killed Mason, the guy who stabbed her to death. And we know that her twin sister, Jayne, and her best friend, Liz, witnessed it. What we don’t know is why.

I didn’t mind when the story started after the fact. I enjoyed the flashbacks of the before, night of, and the day after. And I enjoyed the multiple points of view from the witnesses. It all worked very well for me. I easily visualized the scenes, like watching a limited TV series. Usually I can determine the why fairly early. I thought I had. But then I thought, nope, it can’t be that obvious. So, I settled in and just let things reveal themselves.

My favorite thing was the investigator. She was much more clever than I’d at first thought. She knew what questions to ask and when to ask them.

And I enjoyed the way the story was laid out, shifting between the day before the murder, the day of the murder and the day after. The author did it well, keeping the story flowing smoothly. She did it just as well when shifting between characters.

This was very much a character driven story for me. As the acts unfolded I learned, through the different points of view, who the witnesses really were. Lots of insecurity disguised as toughness. Many secrets and lies. And, what was hidden. What made them defensive.

The ending was good, though I still had questions. That’s often a good thing and keeps me watching for the author’s next book.

The shocking truth is revealed in the third act, when the POV shifts to victim Sadie herself, in the days leading up to the party. Witness exactly what happened—and see if you can piece it all together. Because poor Sadie totally missed what was right in front of her.

MY REVIEW

They say you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. I believe that, but….. this is a killer cover and right from first glance had me leaning in to see everything. Then, I read the synopsis and was sold.

Imagine. You’re walking down the street at night. The same street you always walk on. And something catches your eye. You stop, trying to figure out what’s different. It’s not obvious, but you notice the decorative iron fence has changed. Then, you cut through the park and something about the trash can raises the hairs all over your body. You give it a wide berth, chalking it up to your imagination. Not long after you’re being chased by said trash can.

Becket hadn’t mean for it to happen. She thought she was rescuing an abandoned baby. That’s not what it was though. Now, the city that looks normal during the day has turned into a deadly otherworldly domain at night. This book was right up my alley. I ate it up hook, line and sinker. I remember when I watched Stephen King’s IT. Never walked by another sewer drain without moving across the road again. And now I no longer casually walk across a manhole cover. You never know…….

I’d love for this made into a movie. Some of the scenes would be out of this world to see. Just look at the cover!

Fright Short Stories Of Terror, Horror And Fear

MY REVIEW

Beware…… scares await. Ooh, I love a good scare. And when I get a bunch in one book, even better. You never know what lurks. Waiting to make those hairs stand up on the back of your neck and flinch at the little noises just loud enough to hear but not able to identify what they are, or what’s making them.

I try not to pick favorites but A Pile Of Rocks won out. All of these were good and Kevin gave a lot of different scenarios. I couldn’t help but feel bad for the characters. Many were left with making the choice between the lesser of bad decisions.

I watch lots of scar podcasts and these would fit right in.

MY REVIEW

My son kept coming out to see what was happening while I read Dead Girls. He’d hear me talking to myself, snorting and laughing. He wanted to know what made that happen. I told him to hold his horses and I’d explain after I finished. So, when I was done he sat down to talk about the story. I explained the synopsis. He’s a big fan of the graphic novel series, The Sandman by Neil Gaiman, and when I showed him some of the illustrations he was eager to read the book himself.

We got talking about some points that got the biggest reactions from me. I mentioned the nod to slasher films. We loved Halloween, Scream, Nightmare On Elm Street and many others. How the characters must never have seen those movies and made wrong decisions accordingly. We all know you never leave a room saying I’ll be right back, right? As we continued talking about Dead Girls it took a while for us to realize the discussion had went down the rabbit hole. For example, how Ash is the daughter of a serial killer, but her mother’s the killer not her dad. We then talked about movies with that scenario. That’s just one of many topics we talked about. I love when a read causes fun discussions.

Slasher and horror fans will have a blast with Dead Girls. I did and highly recommend this funny, dramatic graphic novel.

The Visitor

Just a woman and her dog in an isolated cabin. A major snowstorm is howling outside. And someone or something is outside.

Man, this stuff is my jam. I love isolated settings. There’s no one to help you. It tests Sally’s and her dog, MoBo’s, nerves when things get strange. And a blizzard just adds to the suspense. And Sally’s boyfriend is making the trek. It’s too late to turn him back around. Will he be help or will he be walking into something deadly?

Who is The Visitor? That’s for me to know and you to find out. And Kevin won’t disappoint you. The story takes place in one night and there’s never a dull moment. Loved it!

Sally wants to tell her boyfriend not to come up because of the treacherous conditions, but he’s already on his way.

Sunset House

Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper #18

MY REVIEW

The title and cover are perfect for this one. An old mansion on a run down street that’s converted into a retirement home. Hence the eerie house on the cover and Sunset in the title. These people are living out their last years.

I’m always looking for horror stories with more mature characters. Got a lot of them in this book. And they aren’t going down without a fight. Some real tough cookies. And some don’t think they need Ellie. That changes pretty quickly as events become more and more dangerous.

I loved some of these characters. I think they’d have taken on the evil presence with canes and walkers. Any ghost should think twice before taking on these senior citizens. They’ve been around a long time. Got plenty in their bags of tricks.

I remember how much I loved this series when I started reading it and I still do. The author continues to give me new settings and evil beings to keep it fresh. Not that it could ever fall short for me. I’ll always be waiting for the next book.

Synopsis

MY REVIEW

All of the Ellie Jordan books are scary, but I was seriously creeped out by this one. The lifeless eyes in dolls and puppets have always made me shudder. I imagine them suddenly blinking, their heads turning and something terrible coming out of their mouths. There’s this scene where Ellie puts her hand inside the puppet. Eew. What if it gets stuck or possesses her? See, they’re creepy.

Ellie and Stacey have their work cut out for them. The Calvert’s are in real danger. Something wants in. And something else already is. Once again, Ellie does her research and Stacey mentally paces back and forth, ready to get to the good stuff. The ghost trapping. And a ghost trapping they will go.

Still loving this series and the characters. And I’m really curious where it goes next. I’ll be waiting……….

Synopsis

The Calvert family’s new home used to belong to the recently deceased creator of a forgotten children’s program from the early days of television. The family’s younger kids are fascinated by the basement rooms, a chaotic wonderland of discarded stage sets, props, costumes, and puppets.

At first, the parents are glad to see the kids put down their screens and play creatively with the old theatrical elements, but their performances and their experiences grow more disturbing over time.

In this house, the reruns of a dark past never stop playing, and paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan must protect the family from a malevolent presence trying to draw them into the infernal show.

MY REVIEW

You recognize a true storyteller when they can write short fiction that gives so much in so few words. Kevin is one of those. He’s taken his experiences with the natural world and written some unnatural horror stories.

Among my favorites is the telling of his first hand encounter with a sasquatch. I love that big, hairy cryptid. The author truly creeped me out and I’ll think about his encounter before setting foot in the woods again. Heck, I’ll never take nature for granted after some of these stories.

Whether super short or a bit longer, all of these had something going for them. I enjoyed the diversity and the lingering affect this collection had on me. I say to the author, bring me more. For you fans of horror, I suspect you’ll enjoy these as much as I did.
