MY REVIEW

Twin Power says it all. It’s about teamwork. Working together. Two heads are better than one, right? Simone and Sebastian are fraternal twins. They were born together but look different. Their personalities are different too. Their wants and differents are different. But, being twins, they are never alone. They always have each other.

I loved the illustrations. The twins’ individualities show in so many fun, imaginative ways. How they play, support and comfort each other and discover the power of being twins.

While this story is focused on twins and how working together can be better than working alone, it can also be applied to siblings that aren’t twins.

At the end of the book is a reading comprehension page with questions to ask after finishing the book. And there are some fun pages to color too.  Another wonderful way to make this story a fun read and an interactive learning experience at the same time.

MY REVIEW

The first thing I want to mention is the illustrations in this wonderful story. They are incredible. I especially like that while they are mostly in soft gray, black and white, there are soft hints of other colors such as the red cardinal perched in a tree, the pale pink of Amanda’s sweater, and her calico cat, Daisy’s, light orange spots.

Longmeadow is no ordinary town and Amanda is no ordinary girl. She sees faces in the trees. All kinds of faces. When her beloved cat slips outside into the night and she goes in search of her, she’s surprised that she can talk to the trees, and they talk back.

“I never knew a tree could talk.”

” That’s funny,” replied the tree. “I never knew a human could listen.”

As Amanda continues talking to the trees, she’s told to keep their secret or human’s will cut them down. Kill them. It won’t matter that they provide the air to breathe. Fear would make them destroy the trees. I now know what the lack of color in the illustrations means to me. There’s good and evil. Black and white. And maybe something magical in between.

I truly enjoyed this wonderful adventure and often found myself grinning. The conversations between Amanda and the trees were often silly and fun. They were also a little sad and sometimes scary. There’s one big old tree that’s really mean and it hates humans. Especially Amanda who he calls Humanda.

Meet Author Frederick J. Burns:

Burns, always an artist on the inside, breaks through his trial attorney exterior at age 63, to write and illustrate his first children’s book, AND THE TREES TALKED BACK. Three years in the making, Burns strives to convey a world where commonalities are more important than differences, where empathy is more important than distain and where making friends is more important than creating enemies. With no formal art training, Burns enjoys working in and learning new mediums and styles. His art has won awards in juried competitions, been displayed on billboards, in government offices, the D’Amour Museum of Fine Art, and now graces the cover of Dave Brinnel’s second CD, ALONE. His detailed illustrations of trees using pen and ink with washes of watercolor have been compared to the fantastical illustrations of Arthur Rackham and Maurice Sendak. Burns lives in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts with his wife, Heather and two dogs, where he is developing ideas for his next book.

MY REVIEW

It’s the busiest time and the happiest time of the year. Santa and his eight reindeer are hard at work to be sure all the boys and girls have a wonderful Christmas. For three lucky young girls this year will be extra special. Prancer, Dasher and Vixen have chosen them to be their Pen Pals. What starts as a magical holiday adventure becomes one that lasts their whole lives.

What could be more fun than having one of Santa’s reindeer as your Pen Pal. I sure would have loved it when I was a young girl. What made this even more fun was reading the letters they exchanged. Kylie, Kenna and Rinnie were delightful young girls and their excitement was contagious. I got a feel for each girl’s personality and the same with each of the reindeer.

The illustrations are so colorful and there is a lot to see. Even the little details offer so much to the story.  As does the last pages which have questions you might want to ask your own special reindeer.

A wonderful, magical story that I highly recommend you add to your holiday reading list. I’m sure it will become a part of your Christmas tradition.

Guest Post from Author Michele Monaco
.

The inspiration for the story stems from my children Corryn, Kylie and McKenna. With my love of Christmas, I wanted to bring a whole different magical component to Christmas. I wanted my girls to be so enveloped in the magic of Christmas.  We lived in an area that had woods behind it and deer would be a common sighting on our lawn. I got the idea of these deer coming and watching my kids and reporting back to Santa. Before I knew it, it evolved into me playing the role of these reindeer and writing letters to my kids. My kids loved it and they were immersed in the idea and they were waiting in anticipation for their next letter so I encouraged them even before they could write to draw letters to their reindeer.  In a flash of an eye, my kids were writing letters back and forth to their reindeer

There are so many family traditions that I have integrated into my own family. One of them is going to cut down our own Christmas tree. This is quite an event that happens after Thanksgiving. Everyone must put on a Santa or elf hat.  It is the mandatory uniform for going out and seeking out a tree. We go out to a tree farm where you get a steaming cup of hot chocolate and we take a wagon ride out to where the Christmas trees are located and get our saws. Then the search begins, and when we find the perfect tree. Everyone takes part in using the saw to cut down this tree, and everyone helps carry the tree back to get wrapped up and loaded on the car!

I have two Christmas trees in my house one is the traditional tree that goes up in the living room and then I also have another tree that usually has a theme for the year one of my favorite trees was when I scoured photo albums Facebook Instagram to get pictures that included everyone in my family. I collected pictures from when people were small kids during their lifespan special moments. I decorated them with ribbon and hung them all over the Christmas tree so that when people came to my home they were immersed and fascinated by walking around the tree and seeing pictures of themselves and extended family and friends throughout their lives. It brought on memories, conversation, laughter, and tears. For me, this tree unified the meaning of Christmas.

Another tradition is that we start off  Christmas Eve morning with a large cup of hot chocolate and we pile into the car with snuggly blankets and we drive through Valley Forge Park where there are a lot of deer in the open lands and people walking on the open trails. My girls and I play Christmas music and we wish the reindeer good luck as they prepare for Christmas. Next year’s book will reveal why we wish the reindeer good luck!

Merry Christmas!

MY REVIEW

I found myself checking all the boxes when reading this adventure.

Fun, witty characters that charm me. There’s Fearless Flossy Fin. A young Great White shark that’s scared to go to the dentist.  She’s not living up to her title of Queen Of The Sea.

Mama Fin, who’ll not here another word about it. It’s off to the dentist.

Dr. Dribble the dolphin. Known as The Gentle Dentist Of The Sea who will not treat sharks. No way.

And his assistant, an Octopus named Ms. Oops, who shames Dr Dribble into examining Flossy’s BIG teeth.

And there are so many quirky, silly descriptions that made me giggle. Yes, giggle.

Mama Fin finding Dr. Dribble on the fin-ternet.

And Flossy’s jaggedy, snaggedy, zig-zaggedy bad teeth. It’s so fun to say out loud.

And all those extras. So many adorable creatures. A fun waiting room at Dr. Dribble’s office. And some of his dental tools, such as the Barracuda Drill. Yes, it’s a barracuda.

Must not forget the illustrations. They are so colorful and the characters are so fun and cleverly drawn. I loved them all!

I thought this was a super fun way to ease a child’s fear of the dentist. If Fearless Flossy can do it, so can they.

MY REVIEW

I confess, the title for the book was what first caught my attention. I then went over and learned about the author. Jennifer has written plenty of books and I wanted to try one. While this is the third in the series, I easily jumped in and had fun. As it’s also the end of the series, I now want to go and read the other books too.

Alice and her three companions have a big pickle to tackle. The hidden Bigfoot community, or Yare’s, are about to be exposed. They need help and Alice and her friends are just the ticket.

What a delightful and thoughtful story. I think young ones, and adults, will benefit by reading this story about strength of character, love and acceptance. With plenty of adventure and excitement to make for a super fun read.

A team on an expedition to explore a mysterious canyon in the Australian outback encounters Cretaceous-era dinosaurs.

.

Cretaceous Canyon

by Deborah Sheldon

Genre: Horror, Action, Adventure, Dinosaur Lost World

.

Australia’s outback hides a mysterious canyon. Hidden deep within is a forest of pine tree that dates from the Cretaceous Period. A megacorporation sends in a team of experts to research this canyon for botanical riches.

The expedition enters a no-man’s land formed 100 million years ago when Australia was still attached to Antarctica, and dinosaurs ruled the super-continent. But the canyon has more prehistoric and dangerous species than anyone could have possibly imagined.

Trapped and terrified, unarmed and unable to communicate topside, the team’s extraction deadline is six long hours away.

The frantic race for survival is on.

Interview with Author Deborah Sheldon

.

How long have you been writing?

My whole life; as far back as I can remember. In primary school, I loved superhero comics and wanted to be an illustrator for DC. I even made my own comics. Then I realised that writing the story rang my bell more than illustrating the panels.

When I was 11 years old, I knew I wanted to be a writer. At the time, I thought the only route was to be a novelist. My three years at university introduced me to a huge range of options that I hadn’t considered before, which fascinated me.

So, my next 20 years were spent penning magazine feature articles, TV scripts such as NEIGHBOURS, and non-fiction including books and medical/patient information. In 2005, at the age of 37, I wrote my first short story. Ever since, I’ve written fiction across the darker spectrum of crime, noir and horror.

Do you see writing as a career?

Most definitely. More than a career; a calling. I’ve been a professional writer across various media my entire adult life. This craft is my passion and a top priority, and that’s how I made it my career.

Do you read yourself and if so, what is your favorite genre?

I read widely across genres and eras. Generally, I’m most invested in any genre of fiction from the early 1800s onwards to the present day, though I also find non-fiction interesting. What I read at any given time depends on how I’m feeling. Books are like food to me; I do have favourites, but occasionally I’m in the mood for something new or unusual.

A day in the life of an author?

I always begin a writing day by editing my pages from the previous session. When I’m finished editing after an hour or so, I’m immersed in the story. Picking up where I left off feels easy. After four or five hours of writing, I’m usually done for the day. My brain feels flattened and I need time to ‘decompress’.

Advice for new writers?

Research your market thoroughly, and submit your work to appropriate markets only.

Back in the old days, when the Internet was just a twinkle in the eyes of various computer scientists, it took legwork to research a market. For example, if you wanted to pitch a feature article to a magazine, you’d have to get your hands on a physical issue to read it. If you wanted to pitch a novel, you’d have to spend a few hours in a brick-and-mortar bookshop browsing the shelves to get the feel of a publisher’s submission requirements. I used to buy market annuals, which provided brief summaries and contact details.

Today, market research is a breeze! Publishing houses have websites and most offer free samples. Many titles on Amazon have the ‘look inside’ feature where you can read the first couple of chapters, which helps you get a feel for a publishing house’s proclivities. Everything you need to know is a mouse-click away.

But the most important tip when researching markets is follow the submission guidelines, no matter how fussy and particular they may seem. Editors and slush pile readers, with their massive amounts of required reading, have no interest in indulging your quirks. Present your manuscript in the exact manner requested, or risk editors hitting ‘delete’ without reading it.

Describe your writing style.

Cinematic, spare, direct.

What are you currently reading?

I have three books on my bedside table: Collected Ghost Stories by M.R. James (reading for the second time); Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut; and the crime anthology Illicit Motions edited by Eddie Generous (in which I have a story, “Fork in the Road”).

What is your writing process? For instance, do you do an outline first?

Outlining is my habit. It comes from writing feature articles and TV scripts, which have fixed formats. You can’t deviate. If you do, you risk getting rejected or fired. For example: if you promise a magazine editor an article of 5000 words, you’d better deliver that within a very small margin; and if you pen a half-hour TV script, you’d better write 21 minutes around equally-spaced ad breaks.

So, from the get-go of my fiction writing career, I’ve always outlined before writing a word. I still do that to this day. Writing an outline lets me pin down a story so that I can get my first draft onto paper. I use brief outlines of perhaps a line or two per plot-point.

If freestyling instead, an idea might lead me around in pointless circles until I lose heart and give up.

The hiss of the opening door drew everyone’s attention.

Good Christ! Alastair jumped to his feet.

It was Raj Devi himself, wandering into the conference room like a lost and befuddled grandfather, wearing slacks and a giant knitted cardigan. His hair and beard were salt-and-pepper, his seventy-two-year-old face frowning with its usual look of perpetual distraction.

Alastair raced towards the door and took its weight.

“Mr Devi!” he gasped, clumsily grasping his boss’s elbow. “What are you doing here?”

The old man glanced up, his gaze as sharp as darts, and whispered, “Rallying the troops.”

“Let me help you to a chair—”

“Thank you, I already know how to sit in a chair,” Raj said, and this time he lifted his voice, rolling it around the conference room, a deep and rich example of Received Pronunciation English, a baritone fit for the Shakespearean stage.

Alastair saw the effect on his recce team: everyone sat up straight. If he could figure out Raj Devi’s effortless ability to command an audience, then Alastair would rule the world.

“Everyone, pay attention,” Alastair said, his voice in comparison like a squeak to his own ears. “This is Raj Devi, your sponsor. You’re in the presence of a great man.”

Raj took Alastair’s chair and gazed around the table. No one rushed him. No one looked impatient. The silence was still and complete. He held them all in the palm of his hand, and Alastair both idolised Raj and hated him for this charisma, this absolute magnetism. Alastair had to remain standing, which was awkward, but the time for sitting was now lost.

With a half-smile, Raj nodded sagely. “I’m a believer in our power to make a better world,” he said, and the timbre of his voice sounded hypnotic; even Gloria was in thrall. “So, if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to tell you a story. A story about seeds. Leaves. Bark. Fruit. The human race has used plants to make medicines since before written language was invented. Traditional medicines date back thousands of years to Egyptian scrolls, Indian clay tablets, Chinese inscriptions etched on seashells and across the dried bones of oxen. Today, one in ten of our essential modern medicines is based on flowering plants. One in ten! My word.”

Lapsing into silence, Raj linked his fingers together on the table and closed his eyes. The seconds ticked on. Alastair checked the faces of his team and felt that he must say something, had to say something, or risk losing them. But what? God, the empty seconds kept ticking…

Alastair said, “Not just medicines! No, the plants we find today could also make new pesticides, and help farmers to breed disease-resistant crops—”

“All of us,” Raj Devi interrupted in his sonorous tone, “has taken a painkiller as simple as the aspirin. That miracle medicine was derived from the willow tree, its properties discovered by ancient Egyptians and other peoples such as Native Americans. Morphine is from the poppy. Today, plants help treat Parkinson’s Disease, diabetes, various cancers, heart disease, other ailments. Your work today could very well discover unknown plants that may herald a new age of medicine. Imagine, a cure for Alzheimer’s! It might be waiting for you, out there in that canyon. Waiting for all of us, the entire human race. Your hike has the potential to change the world, and save countless lives for generations to come. Oh, my goodness. What a legacy.”

The silence in the room was absolute. Alastair became aware that he was holding his breath. The team members appeared transfixed, mesmerised by the old man.

“Thank you,” Raj sighed. “Thank you for striving to help me make a better world.” He pushed out his chair, stood up, went to leave and then hesitated. “Please,” he added, “eat as much of the breakfast buffet as you can. It cost me a small fortune!”

He laughed and everyone joined in. Like Pavlov’s dogs to a bell, they automatically reached for Danish pastries, croissants, donuts, muffins, goat cheese tarts, fruit skewers.

Alastair stopped Raj at the door. The old man glanced up at him, cold and annoyed.

Taken aback, Alastair found himself stammering. “Gosh, sir, that was a…that was a…”

“What?”

“Such a terrific, inspiring speech—”

“I don’t take notes.”

“Oh, I didn’t mean—”

“Focus on the hike. Don’t fuck it up,” Raj said, and put his hand on the door.

“I’ve put together a competent team,” Alastair said, striving to appear confident. “I’m just wondering if you think it’s absolutely necessary that I go with them into the canyon.”

Raj gave a frosty smile. “Hmm. I don’t know. Do you think you’re necessary?”

“Well, yes, in the creation of the team—”

Raj raised his eyebrows. “And now that the team has been created?”

“Ha-ha! I’m sorry, I’m not sure—”

“You’re not sure if you’re necessary anymore?”

Sweat beaded on Alastair’s hairline. “No. I mean, yes. I’m still necessary, sir.”

“Okay.” Raj patted him on the arm. “Enjoy your hike.”

“Yes, sir.”

Raj left the room. Alastair watched him shuffle along the hallway towards the bank of lifts, where he would take a ride to the building’s top floor and probably take a fucking nap. Raj Devi walked like an old man in his seventies, which is what he was, and his refusal to put on a false front was admirable in a way that stuck in Alastair’s craw. Only a multi-millionaire could afford to drop the façade, wear slacks with a baggy cardigan, let his paunch hang out.

MY REVIEW

The story is what I would describe as compelling. The characters are genuine, each carrying their own brand of baggage. The author’s visual writing sets me right down on the ranch in the stunning Rocky Mountains of Canada. The telling of the ancient tradition concerning the shadow horses of the First Nations people is fascinating. And how things all connect and come together is why I couldn’t stop reading this book.

Lee and Lyla are brother and sister. Their mother moved them to Germany many years ago. Memories come flooding back when an urgent summons from their aunt calls them back to Canada. Their father is very ill. I’d say he wasn’t at all thrilled to see his two kids when the arrived on his doorstep. It wasn’t until right near the end of the book that I found out why and it wasn’t what I was expecting. They don’t feel welcome and have no plans to stay on. But that may change as the lure of the ranch takes hold.

Secrets, legends, mystery, romance, danger and a hint of the mystical made this, as I mentioned at the beginning of my review, a very compelling story.

MY REVIEW

I became enthralled with the characters and the author’s visual writing about the Rocky Mountains in the first book, Shadow Horses Of The Rocky Mountains. I was excited to dip back into the series.

Something I forgot to mention in my review of the first book is how the author starts with a short scene around a campfire, with someone telling about a legend of the First Nations people. Each one relates to what unfolds in each book and is quite fascinating.

The story continued a short time after the last book and once again I was eager to turn the pages. Lee is now busy running Willow Ranch and Lyla is in charge of taking care of the brood mares and foals. It works quite well and they even find time for relationships.

While the ranch and the siblings were the main focus in Shadow Horses, Shadow Crow brings minor characters to the fore and learning about them was equally intriguing.

Life in the majestic Rocky Mountains can be beautiful but it can also be risky and it tests the mettle of these characters. Sometimes puts them in danger.  Differences must be put aside for their own survival.

Yes, I enjoyed Shadow Crow as much as Shadow Horses and I’m excited to turn the pages in the next book, Shadow Grizzly, which is waiting for me on my end table. Stay tuned for my next review.

MY REVIEW

In the first book of the series, Shadow Horses, we meet the siblings Lee and Lyla and share in their struggles o adjust to life on a home they’d not seen for many years.

In the second book, Shadow Crow, the stories focuses more on Lyla and where she fits in on the ranch after secrets were revealed that changed her forever and sent her on a new path.

In the third book, Shadow Grizzly , the story is more focused on Lee and his plans to make Willow Ranch successful and maybe start a family. Lyla returns to take up the reins at the wildlife rescue center and just might find love too.

This series continues to reel me in. There are many characters to keep track of and new ones the author deftly introduces. All of their roles become clear as the story reaches it’s conclusion.

I found myself trying to put faces to names and to visualize the ranch and the majestic scenery of the Rocky Mountains. Made me think this would be a wonderful television series that would keep me coming back for more, just like the books.

MY REVIEW

So I’ve reached the fourth and possibly final book in a series I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Author Natascha Birovljev has written a modern Western saga with genuine characters who struggle through many of life’s challenges. Sometimes losing and sometimes winning. The panoramic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains is written breathtakingly. The animals featured are characters in their own right, whether mystic or flesh and blood. And the journey has been a lesson as much as an adventure as I revisited Willow Ranch in each book.

One of my favorite things the author has done is start each book with people gathered around a campfire as a legend of the Cherokee legend is narrated. Each one ties into the book to come and captivates my curiosity to learn how.

I’m a bit saddened to have reached the end of this series but quite happy with it too. If more is to come, I’d be thrilled to continue.

MY REVIEW

Long, long ago there lived a girl. Naya, the  daughter of a chief in her clan. Despite her role, she has dreams which she struggles to make her clan understand. Horses can be more than just food. Her dream is to tame a wild horse and ride it. What an advantage it would be.

I was pulled into this historical adventure from the synopsis. I was one of those young girls who dreamed of owning my own horse. How could I not enjoy a story about a young girl who is the first to ride a horse. What I quickly discovered as I got further into the book was the fascinating journey of Naya and her clan. How they lived a nomadic life much as Native Americans used to. The social dynamics and Naya’s place in the clan. And her spiritual journey. The author showed me her world and I was transported to another time, met members of other clans and was enthralled by Naya’s enchantment with the wild horses.

I have to read the next book. This one ends on a cliffhanger. That can sometimes annoy me. I like some kind of conclusion. But this time, I was just anxious to continue with a young girl’s journey. To be transported back to her world, which is so fascinating, and see what her future brings.

 Getting to Know Your Characters

When asked how I came up with the characters in my novel, She Who Rides Horses, I’m never quite sure how to answer. Rather than being made up, I feel as though they showed up. As the story started to unfold, I gradually got to know them. Take the main character – Naya – for example. When I began writing, I didn’t know her name – she was simply ‘the girl’. As the story moved along, I tried out various names derived from the language her people might have spoken, finally settling on one that seemed to fit. But then I happened to read a book of ancient myths from the land where Naya’s mother was from and realized Naya and her mother Sata could both be named for the same mythological character – Satanaya. It all seemed to fit – but I had to get to know both Naya and her mother first. As for Naya’s appearance – without any conscious intention on my part, she showed up in the first couple of paragraphs with red hair and blue eyes. Later, when I researched the origins of the genes for red hair and blue eyes, sure enough, I was able to verify that, although rare, those traits did exist among the people living in the steppes of what is now southern Russia around 4,000 BCE, where and when the story is set. Similarly, some characteristics of her personality were present from the beginning, like her tom-boyishness and her bravery and determination, but other aspects only emerged as I got to know her better, like her insecurities around not being the son she is certain her father would have preferred.

Besides Naya, I’ve enjoyed getting to know her grandmother, Awija, as well as her mother, Sata. Having three generations of women in the same family allows me to explore relationships and perspectives at three different life stages. Awija is Sata’s mother-in-law, so that adds an interesting dynamic. As a mother of daughters, I relate to Sata, although she also faces challenges that are not part of my personal experience. Writing about her longings and regrets has allowed me to come to understand her better. Awija plays a more limited role in the first book but she is one of my favorite characters. She’s full of wisdom. I’m enjoying getting to spend more time with her and learn from her as I work on book two.

And then, of course, there are the horses. They are very much characters in their own right, with individual personalities which I’ve also had to get to know. For Naya and the red filly, whose interactions drive the story, I’ve tried to portray their emerging relationship as authentically as possible, which can be a challenge when all the communication between them is non-verbal.

Each day when I sit down to write, it’s as though I’m entering into an ongoing conversation with friends, wondering what they will do and say next. It’s what keeps me coming back to my desk.

Enjoy this excerpt from Chapter One:
.

It was long after noon the next day before Naya was at last able to slip away. This time she was better prepared. In a deer skin bag slung over one shoulder she carried flint tools and kindling for making fire, a flint knife and enough food to last a day, as well as a full water skin. Over the other shoulder was coiled a long length of braided rawhide, strong enough, she hoped, to restrain the filly…

She found the little band at dusk, when the sun’s afterglow cast blackening shadows across the landscape. She had just gained the top of a small rise and could see for some distance, despite the gathering darkness. There they were – blurred shapes silhouetted against the next range of hills. Succeeding ridges gained in height, verdant meadows giving way to forested slopes, behind which the sun had disappeared. The horses had led her to the edge of the grasslands…

Naya shivered in the rapidly cooling air. The horses appeared to have stopped for the evening. The mares’ heads hung low, muzzles almost touching the ground in deep relaxation and she could make out several darker shapes that must be the foals, lying in the grass at their feet. Only the stallion stood alert, scenting the air for danger before dropping his head to grab a few mouthfuls of grass. Moments later, his head lifted again, keen eyes scanning the landscape.

Naya settled herself in the deep grass and rested her folded arms atop her knees. From her vantage on the rise downwind from the small band, she could sit and keep watch without arousing suspicion… Eventually, cheek resting on her forearms, she closed her eyes, and slept…

At some point later in the night, she thought she awoke. Lifting her head from her folded arms, she checked the herd. They were as they’d been before, dozing in the lee of the hillside across from the rise where she sat. Even the stallion had relaxed his vigilance and stood with his head lowered. The full moon now rode high in the sky, bright enough to cast faint shadows. As Naya’s eyes adjusted to the night, the moon’s light illuminated a faint track leading down the rise at an angle from where the horses rested. She hadn’t noticed it before.

Rising, Naya moved as silently as she could, following the path in the moonlight. Soon, she found herself ascending another small rise, then descending, then rising again, until at last she stood at the edge of a ravine. Below, she could see a stream, shining in the moonlight, gurgling quietly as it flowed over its stony bed… Slipping and sliding, Naya made her way down the steep slope, scratching her skin against sharp rocks and thorny underbrush. At last she reached the bottom and looked around her. Along the ravine’s floor, smooth white stones marked the water course… Drawn onward, Naya followed the path upstream into a grove of trees.

There, a wondrous sight met her eyes. Oaks and birches encircled a small pool of water, fed by an underground spring. Reflected in the pool’s clear, still surface was the round orb of the moon, casting its light from high above the rocky cliffs which formed the pool’s backdrop. Beside the pool stood the red filly, burnished coat softly aglow. Naya froze, rooted as if she were one of the trees, and stared. The filly, startled by the girl’s approach, stared back. Neither moved. Eventually, Naya remembered to breathe. In the next moment, she realized that she had left her rope, along with everything else she’d brought with her, back on the rise. Still, she and the filly stood motionless, looking at one another.

In that moment, Naya’s senses underwent an almost imperceptible shift; the moonlight became just a little brighter, the stream’s murmur became just a little louder, the slight breeze rustling the leaves in the trees became just a little fresher against her skin. In the next moment, she seemed to feel the filly’s thoughts.

I will grant your heart’s desire, but only if you are able to grant mine. The musical voice resonated within the core of Naya’s being, even though no sound other than the splash of flowing water and whisper of the wind in the trees disturbed the silence of the grove. What is your heart’s desire?

Awestruck, Naya could only gaze back at the young horse, who now regarded her with luminous dark eyes in which fear had given way to curiosity. Finally, she found her own voice. “I wish to be with you,” she said simply. “I wish to touch your coat.” Then, from deep inside, another longing welled up, a yearning so audacious she almost couldn’t bring herself to speak. Hesitatingly, she uttered the words. “I wish,” she said, “to ride upon your back.”

Ah, the red filly seemed to reply, if this is indeed your deepest desire, then you must see with the eyes of your heart and create ties without the use of a rope. And when you have succeeded in granting my heart’s desire, then shall yours be granted also.

Before Naya could begin to ponder the meaning of the words, the filly brushed past her in a chestnut blur and was gone, disappearing through the trees toward the mouth of the ravine. Gazing after her, Naya shook her head, as if to clear her senses. Water still flowed in the creek and a breeze still rustled among the leaves. The moon still cast its dim glow – but the moment of utter clarity had vanished, just as suddenly as the young horse. Shaking herself again, as if awakening from a dream, Naya retraced her steps to the mouth of the ravine. There was no sign of the red filly…

While the ranch and the siblings were the main focus in Shadow Horse, Shadow Crow brings minor characters to the fore and learning about them was equally intriguing.

Meet the Author:

Natascha Birovljev is a storyteller at heart and author of the “Willow Ranch” book series.

Growing up in Germany, horses were always part of her life. After getting her Master degree in Religious Studies and German Literature, adventure was calling and she traveled to Alberta. She fell in love with the wild beauty of the Rocky Mountains and immigrated from Germany to Canada in 2005.

Here she worked the first years as a guide for horseback vacations, exploring mountain trails and spending the summer months in tent camps in the wilderness.

Inspired by her adventures and connections to ranchers, cowboys and First Nation communities, she started writing her books. Natascha lives on her ranch in Alberta with her horses and dogs.

Her stories show her fascination with the beauty of the Rocky Mountain wilderness and her love for the people she encounters.
