Jess Stone will do anything for her handsome boss. He’s everything she wants in a man so when he needs her during her family’s annual Colorado Christmas celebration, she doesn’t hesitate to adjust her plans.

What should have been a simple flight and a quick meeting turns into a road trip from hell, leaving the pair stranded in a motel room together in the middle of a snowstorm.

He lifted his head for the briefest of moments and gave me a slip of a smile. I loved this little power exchange we had going. He’d demand, and I’d push back. Not a lot, just enough to get him to smile.

“Is this a hostile takeover?” It was a valid question since the man gobbled up companies like I did chocolate candies.

Mark laughed. “No, it’s something new.” He brought a pen to his mouth and chewed on the end, then laid it on the desk‐ top. “It’s a partnership.”

I was tempted to snatch the pen he’d been chewing on but let that thought go. Instead, I leaned in like I would if I were to tell him a secret.

“Can I be candid with you?”

He leaned in like every word I uttered was important. “I always want you to be honest with me, Jess.”

I lifted my head so we were eye to eye. “Forgive me for saying, but you don’t come across as the kind of man who plays nicely with others.”

He looked up at me with eyes the same color as a smog-free California sky. “Oh, I’m really quite good at playing, Ms. Stone.”

He only used my last name when he was making a point he didn’t want me to forget, but what was his point? His words seemed naughty in nature. Combined with his sly smile, and I was certain he was teasing me.

“I’d love to see that, Mr. Cantwell.” I made a note to get him the report within the hour. “But in all honesty, you don’t seem the type of man who likes to share, and a partnership implies sharing.”

He sat back and folded his arms across his broad chest. The smooth fabric of his custom suit gripped his muscles. “We’re talking about two different things. I can play all day and never have to share.” He took the last bite of his muffin and watched me for a second. “I never share. Once something is mine, it’s mine forever.”

A shiver ran down my spine. He was probably talking about money or possessions, but when he looked at me and said those words, my heart beat wildly. What would it be like to be Mark Cantwell’s woman for a minute—a day—forever?

Death Checked Out: A Larkspur Library Mystery
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Wisconsin
Level Best Books (December 6, 2022)
Number of Pages ~300
Digital ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0BHJJ1QRT

She’s used to checking out books. A death? Not so much.

Greta Plank, resident librarian in the small, lakeside town of Larkspur, Wisconsin, prefers her rose-tinted glasses extra rosy, thank you very much. Ever since a family tragedy landed her in Larkspur, she’s kept a happy-or-bust outlook. But Greta’s cheery resolve takes a hit when she finds the town recluse dead at the base of the stairs leading from his deck to the lake. What she assumes is a terrible accident Greta soon learns is something more sinister, and to make matters worse, new-to-town Detective Mark McHenry cites her as not only his primary source for the case, but his top suspect.

To clear her name and return to life as she knew it before the murder, Greta decides to do some clue cataloging of her own. After all, she’s got her master’s degree in library science with an emphasis in research methodology…how hard could a criminal investigation be? With the help of her fellow librarians and her lawyer mom, Greta begins checking out the pages of the murder, uncovering details about the recluse’s rare book collection and Larkspur’s real estate market as she tries to understand why anyone would have authored his death.

But with friends and neighbors stacking up as both victims and suspects, Greta must cross-reference the facts and put a hold on her idyllic worldview if she wants to get the full story without paying the fine of her life.

Character Interview

Hello! Welcome to Larkspur Community Library. I’m Greta Plank, the director here. I’m so glad you stopped by. I’m just finishing up our Monday Morning Storytime. We host a reading hour for our youngest and most wiggly patrons each week, and it’s one of my favorite library events.

Unlike large branches with designated youth services and children’s librarians, I split the duties with my two co-librarians, Iris and Josie. Maybe someday we’ll hire someone who specializes in this area, but it’s not in the budget right now.

I suppose it’ll be my job to try to figure out our capacity for hiring and future guest services. To be honest, I’m still working to figure out exactly how to navigate my role as director. I’ve only been in the position for four months. I’ve been well received, for the most part, but there are some members of the Library Board with whom I don’t see eye-to-eye.

At this point, I’m choosing my moments so I don’t ruffle any feathers.

I do love spending time in the children’s corner of the library. With the colorful, kid-curated art adorning the walls, the wooden toy train table that’s tarnished with use, and the bin of cheerful stuffed animal puppets over there in the corner, it’s one of the happiest spots in the whole building.

And, as usual, I’m choosing joy this morning. If I’m being completely honest, I needed the children’s story time today more than usual. My dear friend, Franklin, died tragically on Friday. I stumbled upon his body. It’s awful, and I’ll be grieving his loss for a long time.

But this morning, I gladly buried myself in my duties and in the whimsical words of Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. It’s a crowd favorite, and the kids are currently milling about with the dried leaves I handed out after we finished our reading.

Oh dear. Why is Detective McHenry here? How am I just seeing him now? He’s new to town, too. Newer than me, even. And he was first on the scene of Franklin’s death, after me. I can’t argue with the fact that the man is rock solid in a crisis, but I’d rather not be reminded of all that right now. His presence is totally bursting the bubble of happiness I had built up around myself this morning.

Shoot. He’s coming this way. Everyone is staring. No doubt they’re all taking in the badge the detective is wearing on his hip and thinking that I, the woman who appears to be a sweet and innocent librarian, have somehow found myself on the wrong side of the law. Rest assured, I’ve done nothing wrong. I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation for why Detective McHenry is gracing me with his presence while I’m at work.

If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to have to go and figure this out.

Feel free to make yourself at home in the library. We’ve got something for everyone, and my co-librarians, Josie and Iris, can help you out if I get tied up with the detective. Wish me luck!

Enjoy this peek inside:

A shadow stands up from the sand.

One shadow. Theo.

Alone.

He’s standing in sand that has been thoroughly fucked up by a plane landing on it, and that motherfucker, that green-eyed innocent who needed encouragement to fuck June, is alone. What happened to her? He looks rough, but not particularly beaten. Not shot. The relief is threaded through with stark cold fear. Where the hell is June?

I’m running before I realize it.

Before I’ve had time to catch my breath and assess the situation. Doesn’t matter at all that I’ve just run through the jungle. I could run forever, but I don’t have to. It’s against mission protocol to drop my entire backpack on the ground, but I shrug it off and let it fall.

Theo turns at the sound.

I have two strides to notice his black eye—he has a black eye, someone hit him—and then I’m on top of him. “Where is she? Where the fuck is she?”

He’s just strong enough to stay upright when my fists collide with his chest. His shirt pulls tight in my fists. The crash of the ocean is loud in my ears, or maybe it’s my pulse. “Don’t.”

I want him to tell me she went for a swim. That she’s hiding behind the goddamn jungle leaves. That she’s building a fucking sandcastle.

Anything to disprove the desolation in his beautiful dark eyes.

Don’t. That one word is my worst nightmare.

“What did you do with her?” I shout into his face.

His cheeks are red with the fight and the bruise under his eye is going a deep purple already. It speaks to the force of the hit. I want to brush it with my fingertips, want to demand to know who did it so I can kill them, and that would be the wrong fucking thing, because he’s here and June’s not and her absence strikes me as offensively wrong.

I’ve gone wrong. I’ve gone so fucking wrong.

I shouldn’t want her here at all, but I do. I shouldn’t be relieved that he’s here, but I am. I shouldn’t want to punch him and kiss him at the same time.

“I’m sorry,” he says, his voice hoarse.

A heartbeat passes, maybe two, and I back him up toward nothing, toward more sand, and drag him in closer. I make my voice dangerously soft. “Sorry about what, Theo?”

He doesn’t make any move to touch me.

He doesn’t lift his hands to shove me off.

He just…looks away. “I didn’t want to ruin her, Carter. We were touching her. Kissing her.”

“We fucked her six ways to Sunday. I know that. What did you do?

“I saved her the only way I could. By sending her away.”

Fun Facts About my Other Santa Series:

–He invested in diamonds, salt mines, train bonds and cash which he kept mostly in the vault in the basement of his mansion in Saint Louis.

–Mario loved his fiancé, Tanya, fiercely and was devastated when she couldn’t remember him after they saved her from a kidnapper.

–He devoted his life to being her neighbor and secretly gave her money for her and the baby’s care.

–She died five years later in his arms. She did remember him just before she died and asked him to care for their daughter.

–He took it to heart and Angie was the blessing that kept him going crazy in those dark days.

–He adopted Angieline who was five-years-old at that time. She became Angieline Tuzzini-Moore. (Angie)

— By then, they graduated to helping small towns when the depression hit them the worst.

–These projects have netted a close relationship between the two and their love has deepened.

–Angie gets to pick the projects and how to go about them.

–The beauty of their work is that they use very little, to none, of their own money. They believe in teaching people how to fish not in giving them a fish each day.

Several of us were gathered in the television room, waiting for the third and final cigarette break — the last activity of the day. We were all watching NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, a preferred television program of the infirm, it seemed. I was reflecting on how bad the astigmatism in my right eye had gotten since my admittance to the Hampton Behavioral Health Facility, and I was thinking about what I would say to Lester Holt in a live television interview as I watched NBC Nightly News with my left eye closed.

Lester Holt: Are you the spokesperson for your generation?

Me: Yes.

Then I reach out.

And I throttle that poor, trustworthy news anchor.

I’ll make a great famous person.

This particular Nightly News segment was a follow-up to a story they had done earlier in the year about the instances of encephalitis in frozen broccoli, the subsequent cover-up by the agricultural conglomerates, and, ultimately, the manufacture of synthetic broccoli. This Nightly News segment included an interview with The Executive Agricultural Secretary of the United States.

The interview illuminated several things, important to me personally:

  1. Synthetic broccoli may cause insanity or induce coma.
  2. Synthetic broccoli may cause genital abscesses.
  3. The Co-Executive Agricultural Secretary, assistant to the Executive Agricultural Secretary, was sitting right next to me, mumbling and wringing his pasty hands. They were showing a picture of him on television. I looked at the television. I looked at him. I looked back at the television.

Slowly, I put one, two, and three together, but I only arrived at a sum total of five. I blamed the medication for this.

Meanwhile, The Man Who Ate the Letter H, my roommate at the Hampton Behavioral Health Facility, had leapt upon The Co-Executive Agricultural Secretary, I mean, like right up onto his knees, screaming and shaking him by the sweater vest. I marveled at his balance and tried to ignore the one-sided fighting.

The Co-Executive Agricultural Secretary was still just babbling and shaking his head. Even now, I was adding things up and I still didn’t know what was happening.

Later on that night, The Man Who Ate The Letter H told me everything.

Book Excerpt:

Rescuing American soldiers out of grimy pits in Vietnam is my life’s mission, yet I’m fully aware it is also a sensitive issue for both governments. Bartering for their return costs money, and the source of the rescue funds and the intent of the mission are both unknown to the American public. They will remain a secret until someone with a higher paygrade releases the information.

No one wants to endanger this crucial operation with loose talk or create an uprising against the VC that could lead to another invasion. If anyone outside the circle of trusted players learns what we are attempting, it will create a stink bigger than Watergate or the Pentagon Papers. Worse, leaked knowledge of our covert op could blast the whole deal to smithereens, and those brave, broken men might never taste freedom again. They would vanish permanently, just as I could have a decade ago if someone hadn’t risked his life to liberate me.

I will not let that happen.

The soldiers, and their loved ones, deserve better.

Pulling out the next piece of paper, irritation rushes over me as I read the typewritten words:

When WM meets with RL and supplies the code, RL will then give LAT/LONG coordinates to the exchange location near Paracel Islands to WM, who will return to BK and page team leader, RD, at 202-555-1717, and send LAT/LONG intel. Ocean transport of the rescued cargo will begin the journey, and the cargo ship, Triumph, which contains the physical funds, will head to location. Exchange of cargo and funds will take place on board.

“What the hell? Now we’re giving these monsters cash? Why did they tattoo the banking code on me? Why did the plan suddenly change this late in the game? I’m bypassing Carter and giving info straight to RedDog? I don’t like this. Not at all.”

On instinct, I re-read it twice, imprinting RedDog’s pager number before flicking the lighter. The ashes flutter to the floor. Rubbing the remains out with my foot, irritation morphs into anger at this last-minute shift of important details.

Reaching inside the bag again, my fingers touch a familiar object—the grip of a pistol. Before I can make sense of why a firearm was provided and how I can sneak it on the plane without getting arrested, burning pain shoots up from my palm and straight to my brain. Dropping the gun, I look at my hand, noticing several tiny needle pricks in the palm milliseconds before my vision blurs.

The room spins as my throat locks up.

Collapsing to my knees, I gasp for air, wondering what kind of poison courses through my veins as a vortex of dizziness overtakes my mind, followed by ebony darkness.

The Doc’s Holiday Homecoming

Genre: Clean Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

Could her closed heart…

Still have room for him?

Olivia Donoghue’s life has turned a corner. The radiologist’s eleven-year-old daughter is finally healthy, and she just moved to her best friend’s dreamy hometown of Adelaide Creek, Wyoming. If only her friend’s prodigal brother, Jeff Stanhope, wasn’t complicating matters. It’s clear Jeff’s kindness knows no bounds, having taken in his late roommate’s teenage son and also offering her a cabin to stay in, but Olivia’s heart is already full…and safe. Is the former rancher worth the risk?

Enjoy this peek inside:

TALK ABOUT A first impression gone wrong. Please, give her the previous five minutes back and Olivia would start over and do much, much better. As she watched Jeff walk away, she resolved that from now on she’d watch her tongue when it came to his relationship with Heather. As was only right, she’d leave that to the two of them. At the same time, she might have known Jillian would plunge right into a conversation with Jeff about horses. In her daughter’s mind, Heather’s legendary horse-loving brother was a kindred spirit. Maybe it was inevitable that Jillian end up a girl devoted to horses and riding, but not when her body was still recovering from the effects of chemotherapy. Even if the assault to her body wasn’t obvious to the untrained eye, Olivia had absorbed almost too much information about what chemo could do to a child.

Then there was Jeff himself. Olivia had seen photos and even his mother’s paintings of him done over a period of years. No way had those images prepared Olivia for the real guy. They hadn’t done him justice, not even close. He had a presence about him that went beyond his thick dark hair and deep-set eyes that brought to mind luscious dark chocolate. With his wide shoulders and muscular arms, he had a body sculpted by the physical work of ranching or more recently, crewing on trawlers and freighters.

Olivia had expected him to be more as Heather described him, still hardened and bitter about losing his family’s legacy, this very ranch. If those old feelings were still a part of Jeff, he wasn’t showing them at the moment. At least not today, and not with Carson nearby. Whatever. It wasn’t her job to analyze any of this. His feelings about this ranch and his former home were completely irrelevant. She had formed an opinion that would guide all her dealings with the man. No matter how friendly, even charming Jeff Stanhope might be, he was a runner. A man who ran away from anything that smacked of responsibility. Like her dad. And Jillian’s father. She didn’t need a third runner messing up her life.

The Case Of The Parrot Loving Professor

A Buttercup Bend Mystery

by Debbie De Louise

The Case of the Parrot Loving Professor
Cozy Mystery

Setting – Buttercup Bend, a fictional town in the Catskills, New York
Next Chapter Publishing

Paperback ‏ : ‎ 290 pages

Cathy Carter knew that returning to college would be tough, but she never expected it would involve finding her anthropology professor’s dead body.

There are no shortages of suspects in Dr. Bodkin’s murder. Besides his three ex-wives and estranged son and daughter, there are also the members of the Talking Parrots Club, a group of four parrot enthusiasts, of which he was the president and founder.

As Cathy delves into Bodkin’s murder, she discovers a relationship between her teacher and the Mennonite family from whom she purchased the farmland for her new pet rescue center. She and her friend Nancy, now employed at a detective agency, work together to help Detective Hunt and Sheriff Miller solve the crime.

Enjoy this peek inside:

From Chapter One:

When Bodkin didn’t answer her knock, Cathy tried the doorbell. She’d confirmed their appointment an hour ago by text, so she found it odd that he was taking so long to come to the door. She tried peeking in the window, but the blinds were closed. She rang a second time and, after hearing the bell echo through the house, she also heard what she realized was a bird squawking. She took out her cell phone and called the professor. The call went to voicemail. She considered that something may have come up, but Bodkin’s car was in the driveway.

Feeling apprehensive, she put her hand on the doorknob and pulled. It opened to her touch. Not wanting to disturb the professor’s privacy in case he was busy with something else that had taken precedence over their tutoring session, she hesitated in the doorway. But the persistent squawking of the parrot persuaded her to step into the house. She could’ve sworn that the parrot’s squawks were forming the word, “Help!”

Following the bird’s call, she walked through Bodkin’s home. For a bachelor, he seemed to keep the place neat. Bookcases lined the walls of every room she entered. As she grew closer to where the bird’s sounds were emanating from, his calls for help were clearer. She passed through a door that opened to an enclosed patio. Sitting on a perch in his cage belting his head off, was Charlie, a full-feathered gray African parrot. She noticed him first. What she noticed second was Professor Bodkin laid across the tiled floor, his vacant eyes staring at the bird.

CHRISTMAS RECIPES… FOR YOUR CAT

You love your cat, right? So it’s not surprising to share the culinary joys of the Christmas season with your faithful feline. How? What about a home-cooked Christmas dinner for your little
darling? It’s not something I do every year, but I’ve cooked a few times for my
cat Avalon, and he loved it.

Steamed Salmon with Catnip Sauce on a Bed of Heavenly Rice

Ingredients:

For the rice:

1/3 cup white rice

3 black pitted olives

1 egg

3 tablespoons cat milk

1 tablespoon grated cheese

1/2 teaspoon of olive oil

For the fish:

70 grams of fish (preferably salmon or tuna)

1 teaspoon full-fat yogurt

Catnip (preferably fresh, but dried catnip is also fine)

Preparation:

Cook the rice as directed on the package

Whisk the whites and yolks of the eggs together until smooth

Add the grated cheese

Heat the olive oil in a pan

Add the eggs and cheese

Add the rice

Stir well until the eggs are cooked

Let it cool for a while, so your cat won’t burn its palate

Mix in some cat milk right before serving

Decorate with small pieces of black olives.

Steam the fish

Let it cool for a while

Drizzle the yogurt over the fish

Sprinkle with catnip

Serve along with the heavenly rice

Of course, you can always improvise with this dish. However, avoid using onions, leeks, and garlic since these are toxic to cats. Tomatoes should be avoided as well because they can
cause tummy aches.

Tuna Tea

Drain the liquid from a can of tuna (preferably choose one without added oil and salt – the health of your cat comes first)

Dilute with mineral water

Serve in a regular drinking bowl

In order to make it playful, you can add one or two ice cubes to the Tuna Tea. Fun guaranteed!

Let me know in the comments if you will be making these Christmas recipes for your cat this year.

MY REVIEW

The day Avalon crossed paths with Vanessa, her life as she new it ended. Was it fate?

I think it was. Avalon was a handsome cat, a Turkish Van, the breed Vanessa had been looking for. She new they were a possessive breed, but nothing prepared her for this cat.

He tortured the other cats in her household, threw up on her guinea pig, and flew into tantrums, tearing her house apart if she looked at another creature, especially another cat.

But there was another side to Avalon. Adoration. He adored Vanessa. He was hers. And as Vanessa’s life changed, she was his.

This story is about Vanessa as much as it’s about Avalon. She tells much about herself, her past, her thoughts, as the years pass.

Sharing her vulnerabilities, sacrificing opportunities, through good times and bad, Vanessa gave her all to Avalon.

Most pet owners soon learn they aren’t owners. Their pet is not a pet, it’s a member of the family. And sometimes they rule the roost.

The extremes Avalon went to astounded me. Puking on the guinea pig, terrorizing the other cats, letting his displeasure be known with  escalating howls, even kicking her boyfriend out, he was to be commended for his unswerving spirit.

The things Vanessa gives up for Avalon may seem like a bit much, but haven’t we all done things for our furry friends that may seem ridiculous to others? I know I have.

Vanessa feels like their paths crossed for a reason. Her and Avalon were meant to be together. And I believe her. Never have I heard of such a bond as they shared.

This story made me cry. But I smiled through the tears and when I finished it, I hugged my dog and my cat, gave them some special treats, and when we snuggled together at bedtime, I felt whole.

5 Stars

.
Synopsis:

From Amazon bestselling author Vanessa Morgan, Avalon is the heartwarming and once-in-a-lifetime love story of a girl and her neurotic Turkish Van cat.

With humor, the author details how Avalon made other creatures cringe in distress whenever he was around, how he threw her dates out by means of special techniques, and how he rendered it almost impossible for her to leave the house.

Avalon was so incorrigible that even the landlord ordered to get rid of him. But beneath Avalon’s demonic boisterousness, Vanessa recognized her own flaws and insecurities, and she understood that abandoning Avalon would be the worst she could do to him. Thanks to her unswerving loyalty, Avalon transformed into a tender feline and even landed a major role in a horror movie. In turn, Avalon made it his mission to be there for his human companion.

Avalon is a memoir for anyone who has ever been obsessively in love with a pet.

Avalon is also available in French.

Filming of The Strangers Outside took place in August and
September 2010. Avalon joined the set for two days. The location: a vacation
cabin in the woods of Sint-Katelijne-Waver, a place where shadows came alive
and danced with the rare patches of light. The perfect site for a horror movie.

Outside the vacation cabin, the film crew prepared for
action. Camera tripods and lights were set up. An actor in monk clothes smoked
his last cigarette before the shoot.

Two large tables with food and drinks sat in the shade, each
bottle of water labeled with the name of an actor or crew member. Avalon had a
bottle all for himself.

Avalon was remarkably at ease on set. He examined the
vacation cabin for about half an hour, sniffing his way through the dusty
corners, before settling into a deep sleep on the couch.

While everyone fawned over Avalon and fed him snacks from the
buffet table, the director gave us a quick rundown of the scene to come. “The
camera focuses on Avalon lying on the coffee table. In the background, through
the windows, we see actors Pierre Lekeux and Iulia Nastase arriving home.
Avalon follows their movements with his head as they move from one side of the
house to the other. When the front door opens, Avalon jumps off the table to
greet them.”

“Avalon won’t do that,” I said. “Just like children, cats are
uncontrollable. It’s a great idea for a scene, but I’m afraid you’ll have to
come up with something less demanding.”

Apparently, I didn’t know my cat very well, because Avalon
did exactly what was expected of him.

The scene was shot several times in a row and Avalon never
missed a beat.

In another scene, while eating his Schesir dinner, Avalon suddenly had to look up in panic. The fear in his eyes looked genuine. He was perfect.

Sitting at the dining table, actor Pierre Lekeux watched Avalon
with incomprehensibility and admiration, shaking his head in denial. “I need at
least twenty minutes to prepare a scene, to enter a certain state of mind. But
this cat nails it in a matter of seconds. Avalon’s the best actor on set. He’s
even better than me.”

Pierre was right. Avalon had this air–he carried himself in
a certain way, very much aware of his charisma. He was a natural performer. A
miniature star.

Experiencing another’s past could end her future . . .
Kiera Brayleigh is a memory surgeon. In the ten years since her “gift” manifested, she’s helped dozens of women deal with trauma by removing their horrific memories—burns, rapes, tortures.  It pays well, but she holds those moments, making her a fiery mess. The bizarre request from a Chicago homicide detective is the last thing she needs.

.
Kiera might appreciate the cop’s dimples and his commitment to the job, but only an idiot would agree to experience a rape-murder victim’s last memories. Kiera, it turns out, is that idiot. Dean’s dedication and calming presence challenge Kiera’s distrustful nature, and she finds herself falling for Dean even as he struggles with his own demons.
Can two broken people find love?

“I’m not sure how much Ms. Morten has shared with you, but—”

Kiera lifted a finger; thankfully, her index. “Dr. Patty told us you had questions about
memory reading as it might apply to one of your cases. Read memories aren’t
admissible in court. You’re wasting your time.”

“I don’t need evidence like that,” Dean said, deciding not to point out that Patty hadn’t
graduated yet and wasn’t, technically, a doctor.

“Whew,” the blond he didn’t recognize said. “It’s one of the frustrating things about what
we do.” The memory surgeons all winced when she spoke, though the blond didn’t
appear to notice.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

She beamed. “Amy Carter.”

“Do you mind telling me what’s your specialty?”

“Bitching and  complaining,” Kiera replied in a tight voice.

Amy’s lips compressed, but she didn’t say anything. Was Kiera the group’s bully? Was that
how she controlled the narrative? Everyone looked to her, even Patty.

Kiera sighed. “Dr. Schwartz is the expert in the field. Look into his research. Gilfoile and
Roberts are hacks, and the rest don’t know shit but still want to capitalize on
the memory-surgeon thing.”

He wrote down “Schwartz” in his notebook, surprised at her generosity. “Thank you.”

She stared at him with those blue eyes that didn’t blink enough. “That all?”

“Not quite.”

“Yeah, I figured.” She shook her head. “They don’t fully understand how memory works, so it’s going to be a while before they figure out how we’re able to access people’s memories and how they can be removed and kept in someone else’s mind. We can’t help you with the science stuff.”

“I’m more interested in how it works from a practical standpoint.” He directed his
questions at everyone else, but the only one looking directly at him was Kiera.
Fine. If he won her over, the others would follow. “I’m trying to ascertain what
you can and can’t do.”

“Why?”

No time to finesse. With his attention still on Kiera, he handed Brittany Kolchek’s
picture to Ramon and asked him to look and pass it on.

“I’ve never seen her before,” Ramon said. “Is she missing?”

Dean waited until everyone had viewed the photo, because he didn’t want to give them the
opportunity to refuse.

Beth looked last, and she studied Brittany for several seconds. “She seems nice.” Then she
walked the photo back to him.

“Her name is Brittany Kolchek,” he said. “She’s in a coma.” As a group, they cringed, even Kiera. Good—they cared. “The doctors say she won’t wake.”

“You don’t want information. You want one of us to jump into her memories,” Kiera said, her face as hard as her voice.

“We believe she’s the third victim of a serial
killer targeting young women. All three scenes have little physical evidence.
This might be our only chance to catch a break.” When nobody spoke or moved, he
added, “He’ll kill again.”
