 The Blue Baboon In The Big Balloon

  by Sarah and Steven Mostyn

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Children’s Illustrated Rhyming Book

Ages 3 – 7

My Review

Your little ones will adore this book and you’ll be reading it with them over and over. I did and I don’t have any young ones!

Harold, the blue baboon, lives in a blue balloon.  He’s very close with his brother, Gerald, and they enjoy tea together at three. They are joined by many friends. Mice that fly kites, a green cat named Matt, and many others. There’s even a mite that fights a troll named, Dwight.

One night, they all pile into Harold’s balloon and sail to the moon, where they make new friends, including the cow that jumped over the moon.

I must have read this 5 or 6 times in a row. I couldn’t stop smiling at the fun, vividly colored illustrations. I read this on my Kindle Fire and the bold colors leaped out at me. And the rhyming is addictive. I think I know the whole story by heart now.

Your kids will fall in love with these adorable characters and they’ll be begging you to read it with them. A delightful story for beginning readers and a fun tool for those that haven’t learned yet. I highly recommend and my personal rating is….to the moon and back!

  5 Stars

Synopsis

Oh, what adventures they have! Meet Harold the blue baboon. He has tea at half past three every afternoon. In his big balloon, Harold takes flight with a cast of delightful friends, as they soar off on a quest to explore outer space.

Harold’s traveling companions include a troll named Dwight who wears red tights and fights with a feisty orange mite; Holly and Molly, prancing raccoons that live on the moon; and their friend Miranda, quite a talented panda who sings on her veranda.

If your child likes Dr. Seuss, he/she will be captivated by the hilarious rhyming and fun characters that will soon become beloved friends. Sure to be a favorite bedtime tale, The Blue Baboon in the Big Balloon is great for beginners or intermediate readers (ages 3-7). When you join in and read the tongue-twisting saga to them, the laugh factor increases by 10!

For its unique style and brilliant illustrations, this book (available in paperback and Kindle) has been praised by the Children’s Book Review, Midwest Book Review and others. It’s destined to become a classic that your children will cherish.

My Review

The beautiful state of Florida. People are either born there, die there, retire there, or enjoy a lovely visit. For Emily Rhodes, it’s one of those, and maybe two, since she’s stuck her nose in a murder investigation.

When a prominent rancher is murdered and Emily’s friend is accused of the murder, she pulls out all the stops to prove her innocence, although there’s the risk of painting a target on her own back.

I can’t help but fall for Emily. She’s like me, no longer a spring chicken but still able to jig with the best of them. She’s salty, sassy, and no fool. Friends are very important to her, but don’t get on her bad side. She’s double tough. As Detective Lewis finds out when they tangle up in the case.

This was one laugh after another. There’s an eclectic cast of character’s and more shenanigans and manipulating going on than you can shake a stick at. And have you taken a gander at the cover art?. What a hoot! I’m a southern gal and if you put cowboy boots and a flamingo on the cover, you betcha I’m going to read that book!

Whether you love mysteries or cozy mysteries, there’s plenty to like here. And some fun moments to soften the story plot so it isn’t too dark.

And did someone ask whether there’s romance in this book? I detected some sparks flying and they weren’t from no fire.

Synopsis

Emily Rhodes came to rural Florida for the cowboys, the cattle, and to do a little country two-step, not to fall head first onto a dead body in a dumpster. Ah, the golden years of retirement in the sunshine state. They’re more like pot metal to Emily, who discovers the body of the county’s wealthiest rancher in the Big Lake Country Club dumpster. With her close friend accused of the murder, Emily sets aside her grief at her life partner’s death to find the real killer. She underestimates the obstacles rural Florida can set up for a winter visitor and runs afoul of a local judge with his own version of justice, hires a lawyer who works out of a retirement home, and flees wild fires hand-in-hand with the man she believes to be the killer.

Grilled, Chilled and Killed: Big Lake Murder Mystery

Paperback: 330 pages E-Book 224 pages

My Review

If it ain’t one dead body it’s another, as once again Emily stumbles over one. This time it’s a contestant in the local barbecue contest. It seems someone is taking things a bit too seriously.

Detective Lewis and Emily tangle up once again as she practices her snooping skills and he sniffs around her skirt. Yep, the romantic sparks from the first book have produced a small fire. There’s no denying they’re attracted to each other, whether they like it or not.

Half the fun was reading about Lewis and Emily. I kept thinking they’d hook up. Then the author threw in a red herring named Donald. He just might upset their apple cart.

There’s plenty of distractions as Emily tries to solve the case. She straightened out one thing that was looming over her from her past. Then, another huge one came knocking on her door. Not to mention hungry gators and giant pigs.

So much in this book reminds me of me. I live in a small southern town. Tended bar at a local pub, as does Emily. And had friends from all walks of life. I felt right at home in the pages of this book and had a grand time.

I’m not going to say you can’t read this without having read the first book. The author fills you in on previous events without slowing down the plot. But I’d recommend you hit the ground running and start at the beginning. You don’t want to miss out on the fun.

Synopsis

It seems as if Emily is destined to discover dead bodies. This time she finds one of the contestants at the local barbecue cook-off dead and covered in barbecue sauce in a beer cooler. She should be used to stumbling onto corpses by now and the question of who killed the guy should pique her curiosity, but Emily decides to let Detective Lewis handle this one, at least until she figures his theory of who did the deed is wrong, wrong, wrong. Lewis’ denigration of Emily’s speculations is condescending enough to stimulate her dormant snooping skills. As the two of them go on their separate paths to find the killer, Lewis’ old partner, Toby the dirty, tobacco-spitting cop interferes in the investigation leaving Lewis with the wrong man in jail. Killers, bootleggers, barbecue and feral pigs—it’s a lethal game of hide and seek in the Florida swamp.

About Author Lesley A. Diehl

Lesley retired from her life as a professor of psychology and reclaimed her country roots by moving to a small cottage in the Butternut River Valley in Upstate New York. In the winter she migrates to old Florida—cowboys, scrub palmetto and open fields of grazing cattle, a place where spurs still jingle in the post office, and gators make golf a contact sport. Back north, the shy ghost inhabiting the cottage serves as her literary muse. When not writing, she gardens, cooks, frequents yard sales and renovates the 1874 cottage with the help of her husband, two cats and, of course, Fred the ghost, who gives artistic direction to their work. She is the author of a number of mystery series and mysteries as well as short stories. The third book in the Eve Appel murders (from Camel Press) A Sporting Murder was awarded a Readers’ Favorite Five Star Award and her short story Gator Aid a Sleuthfest (2009) short story first place. She has fired the alligator that served as her literary muse when she is in Florida and is interviewing applicants for the position.

Jerome hadn’t known the real Nikki Jordan then. And didn’t, even now. That discovery lay ahead of him.

~~~~~
Read on if you want to know more.
Synopsis from the back flap of the ARC.
It all starts when you cross the line.
Jeremy Barrett, a 33-year-old teacher, has a demanding wife, insufferable in-laws, an unexpected baby on the way, and no real prospects. But Nikki Jordan, his beautiful 16-year-old student, makes him feel like a hero. She inspires him to write poetry, take chances and dream of new possibilities.
Until he awakens to his worst nightmare.
~~~~~

Tell On You, the story of a married teacher’s fatal infatuation with his beautiful 16-year-old student, best fits into the emerging niche genre of “Grip Lit.” These novels, usually authored by women and inspired by the wildly successful Gone Girl, are thrillers with psychological nuances and frequently unreliable narrators. Readers love the must-turn-the-page suspense, even while they may dislike the characters. The author of Tell On You is a psychologist, well-acquainted with the dark corners of the heart.

My Review

You expect trouble in a juvenile detention center. What you don’t expect is the old “an eye for an eye” adage to rear its ugly head. Someone is doling out punishment and the bad boys may just have it coming.

I really enjoyed this dark story. It wasn’t too long and had just enough suspense and mystery to keep me reading straight through. The author quickly fleshed out her characters and the fun part was being torn between liking them and loathing them. They were all bad boys and some were extremely dangerous. Still, I connected with some and felt sorry for them.

It was also fun to imagine which punishment would be doled out to each criminal. What would the punisher do to a thief? A rapist? An abuser?

And I had a time trying to figure out who the punisher was. Was it one of the boys? A guard? Or someone that was snuck in? Right until the end I didn’t have a clue. And when I did finally find out, it was a shocking reveal.

Watch out for the ending. It’s sudden and oddly satisfying.

Genre: Mystery / Horror

 My  Review

I enjoy watching B Movies, especially the creepy ones on the Scy Fy Channel. This would be a good one to watch.

A husband struggling to find a job and support his family gets a dream job. Only hitch is they have to uproot and move to the bayous of Louisiana. They can’t believe their luck and are astonished at the nice digs the company provides for them. If only they had known its history.

It started off fast, I became attached to the characters, which are well developed, and quickly got the creepy vibes. Probably because of the opening scene. It gives you an idea of what might be coming.

The plot gets going and weird and creepy stuff happens. This I really enjoyed visualizing. The only hitch is there were a couple of plot holes that weren’t taken care of and I was a bit confused with the ending. But I’d read more by this author and I think this story has more coming and maybe things will be revealed.

This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

It’s a rainy weekend so I’m stuck inside reading and watching the telly. Oh darn! LOL Sitting around trying to decide which book to read got me thinking. I’ve noticed that I like to read certain types of books at different times of the year. Except for Christmas books and horror. I read those year round.

In the spring, I’m drawn to animal books and romance. In summer, I’m for some steamy or historical romance. In the fall, it’s deep thrillers and suspense. And winter sees me reading more horror and anything that involves battling harsh elements of nature.

This also got me thinking about beverages I enjoy while reading. In the spring I like the light colas such as Sprite and Ginger Ale. Summer is all about Iced Tea and yummy Sangria full of fruit. Fall will have me drinking Cider and dark Colas like Coke and Pepsi. And in the winter I enjoy hot tea and hot chocolate.

How about you? Does the change of seasons also change what you want to read and do you also change the beverages you drink?

Katherine Bone
National Bestselling Historical Romance Author Katherine Bone has been
passionate about history since she had the opportunity to travel to
various Army bases, castles, battlegrounds, and cathedrals as an Army
brat turned Officer’s Wife. Who knew that an Army wife’s passion for
romance novels would lead to pirates? Certainly not her rogue, whose
Alma Mater’s adage is “Go Army. Beat Navy!” Now enjoying
the best of both worlds, Katherine lives with her rogue in the south
where she writes about rogues, rebels and rakes, aka pirates, spies,
the Royal Navy, and duty, honor, and country and the happily ever
afters every alpha male and lady deserve.

loneliness. Now she hopes to pay it forward, to ease readers’
burdens by taking them on a swashbuckling, adventurous voyage into
historical romance and beyond.

Chloe Flowers
A Parrothead at heart, Chloe’s love for pirates began with Peter Pan
and continued with Pirates of the Caribbean and ghost stories about
pirates from the Outer Banks. She listens to Celtic music while she
writes. When life gets too serious, she reads Calvin and Hobbes
comics. She lives in Ohio with her tall, dark and handsome husband,
three children and two rambunctious dogs, Indiana and Luke, who are
named after her two favorite action heroes.
Descended from a family of cooks and gourmet chefs, Chloe is a true foodie and
along with working for fortune 500 companies in marketing and
teaching MBA students strategic marketing, she also ran a gourmet
cookie company. Cooking for a crowd runs in the blood, so her fridge
is always full. She deals with stress by baking pies (just ask her
college roommates what it was like for them around exam time).
Her idea of a perfect day? Sailing on the Caribbean with her family, sun
in her face and wind at her back, and finishing the day in the
kitchen making a fab gourmet meal and sipping a glass of wine.
The Pirates & Petticoats Series is about spunky heroines and the
scoundrels who love them.

Jennifer Bray-Weber
Award-winning author Jennifer Bray-Weber is a proud native Texan. She is a married
domestic goddess/beach bum with two beautiful daughters. Holding two
degrees, one is Music and Video Business, the other in Liberal Arts,
she has been able to express her creative thinking through countless
questionable, often hilarious, life experiences.
Her interests include writing, reading, traveling (what she likes to call
“research”), horseback riding, scrapbooking, shopping,
relaxing at the beach, and dares.
Join Jennifer’s mailing list for sneak peeks, excerpts, and free
giveaways.

Barbara Devlin
USA Today bestselling, Amazon All-Star author Barbara Devlin was born a
storyteller, but it was a weeklong vacation to Bethany Beach, DE that
forever changed her life. The little house her parents rented had a
collection of books by Kathleen Woodiwiss, which exposed Barbara to
the world of romance, and Shanna remains a personal favorite. Barbara
writes heartfelt historical romances that feature flawed heroes who
may know how to seduce a woman but know nothing of marriage. And she
prefers feisty but smart heroines who sometimes save the hero, before
they find their happily ever after. Barbara earned an MA in English
and continued a course of study for a Doctorate in Literature and
Rhetoric. She happily considered herself an exceedingly eccentric
English professor, until success in Indie publishing lured her into
writing, full-time, featuring her fictional knighthood, the Brethren

Amanda Mariel
USA Today Bestselling author Amanda Mariel dreams of days gone by when
life moved at a slower pace. She enjoys taking pen to paper and
exploring historical time periods through her imagination and the
written word. When she is not writing she can be found reading,
crocheting, traveling, practicing her photography skills, or spending
time with her family.

Kamery Solomon
Kamery is not the person who grew up dreaming of the day that she would
clutch her very own novel to her chest, tears brimming over the rims
of her eyes as she thought about how she’d written it herself,
finally! In fact, anything remotely like that didn’t even happen
until she was actually holding her first book in her hand, amazed
that she’d written it and wondering how on Earth she’d managed to do
it when it hadn’t ever occurred to her to write one until months
before. Surprisingly, though, it was just what she never realized she
loved doing.
When starting out in life, Kamery had (and still has) big dreams to
perform on Broadway. She loves music and acting very much, while she
and dance have a love/hate relationship; she would love to do it and
every form of dance decides it hates that about her, haha! The one
constant she always had between the performing world and the book
world were the stories, tales that transported her to other worlds
and made her feel like she really could do anything. Finally, she
decided she wanted to do that for someone else and sat down to write.
It’s been a few years since she held that first book, realizing that she
really liked writing and wanted to do more, but the love that
blossomed in that moment has only grown. Currently, Kamery works from
home in Arizona, while taking care of her two adorable kids, a girl
and a boy, and talking her sweet husband Jake’s ear off about the
insane amount of characters in her head who are ready to fight to the
death for a chance at their own novels. It truly is a wonderful life!

If you were to compare Fiona Quinn Mysteries to a book or a TV mystery series, who would you compare it to?

I think Fiona is a unique individual being a kindergarten teacher from Pittsburgh, who possesses a huge heart—not to mention her ghostly grandmother who lives in the attic apartment. I’ve been asked (especially by parents) if I would compare her to Nancy Drew. The answer: No. The Fiona Quinn story lines are more exciting than a Nancy Drew mystery. If I had to compare to anyone it would be Jessica Fletcher/Murder she wrote—except for the fact that Fiona is much younger than Angela Landsbury’s famous character. Again, I believe the Fiona stories are more electrifying than Fletcher’s mysteries, but it is a better comparison.

What actress would you choose to portray Fiona Quinn?

Kaley Cuoco hands down! Every time I watch Big Bang Theory I think—Wow! She would make the perfect Fiona!

Did you write Waves of Murder specifically as a beach read?

chuckle No, not really, but I must admit that I’m hoping that it is very popular as a “beach read.” The stories are quick clean reads, so you could definitely read the entire book, or at least most of the book, while baking on the beach.

What is the difference between writing mystery and writing suspense?

When writing a mystery, the author holds their cards close to their chest, only feeding the reader clues as to whodunit bit by bit so as not to give away the murderer. In turn, the reader is trying to piece together the clues to try to figure it out before the last chapter.

When writing a suspense novel, the author reveals who killed the poor widow who lives on the hill, and then forces the reader to sweat it out as to whether the widow’s daughter who has come to clean out the house will be killed by the charming, helpful young man who lives next door—who, of course, killed her mother. Or will the detective working the case figure out who the killer is in time to rescue the widow’s beautiful daughter before she becomes the next victim? Yikes!

Which is easier for you to write mystery or suspense?

I love writing the Fiona Quinn Mystery series—really I do, that said, I truly enjoy and find it a tad bit easier to write the suspense novels. Yes, it takes me longer to write the suspense novels—as much as a year, but I do so love to make my readers sweat—and the characters too. Even though Fiona Quinn is a mystery series, I think I do manage to give that touch of suspense to her stories—I can’t help myself!

(Bridge & Sword: Awakenings #1)
Publication date: April 22nd 2017
Genres: Adult, Post-Apocalyptic, Romance, Science Fiction

From USA TODAY bestselling author, a psychic warfare alternative history set in a gritty version of Earth. Contains strong romantic elements – a book in the Bridge & Sword World. Apocalyptic. Psychic Romance.

“You are the Bridge…”

Allie Taylor lives in a world populated by seers, a second race discovered on Earth at the beginning of the 20th Century. Psychic, hyper-sexual and enslaved by governments, corporations and wealthy humans, seers are an exotic fascination to Allie, but one she knows she’ll likely never encounter, given how rich you have to be to get near one.

Then a strange man shows up at her work –– then another –– and pretty soon Allie finds herself on the run from the law, labeled a terrorist and in the middle of a race war she didn’t even know existed. Yanked out of her life by the mysterious and uncommunicative Revik, Allie discovers her blood may not be as “human” as she always thought, and the world of seers might not be quite as distant as she always imagined.

When Revik tells her she’s the Bridge, a mystical being meant to usher in the evolution of humanity––or possibly its extinction––Allie must choose between the race that raised her and the one where she might truly belong.

Enjoy this glimpse inside

I CHOKE… CHOKED… am choking… caught inside a fisted clutch of light, an egg-shaped pocket that holds me unflinchingly in place.

Inside that heated glow, I birth.

Stars swim past me in a pale swath, sky broken by sharp eyes and lightning flashes, snaking charges of gold and orange and crimson, the late side of the setting sun.

I am with him again.

I have never left him.

Now we lie together on a bed, wrapped into and around one another, alone in a single room in a building full of seers. I know I am supposed to be like them. I know I’m supposed to be the same as those women I met when we came in off the street––yet he is the only one here who feels at all like me. His breath warms my skin, his fingers wrap around me, stroking my face and neck and hair, stroking my arms and fingers and lips.

The pain between us worsens, a spike that arcs, starting as a gentle pull before it keens steeply up, inexorable, becoming gradually more unbearable, until I am sure my insides will be ripped out, torn into so many pieces there is nothing left.

Beyond where I lay, a golden ocean beckons. It is familiar.

Even more familiar than the mountains we share, the grief over our pasts.

He is there, too.

I’m sorry, he says. I did this. I did this to you. I’m sorry––

Shhh. My voice is steady, somehow apart from the lights clashing, the ghosts winging over both of our heads. Revik, it’s all right.

Don’t leave me, Allie. Don’t leave me alone with this.

I feel confusion on him, confusion in his own words, what he means by them. The feeling intensifies though; his hands tighten on my skin.

The pain worsens, too, making it hard to see.

Still, my own words come easily, without thought or regret.

I won’t, I tell him. I never will.

There is a question in this. The question shocks his heart.

I am asking him for something. My light is, anyway. I can’t say it’s a conscious question, not fully, but the intensity behind it is real, and it feels entirely like me.

I am asking him for something.

I want a promise from him. A vow.

I want him to give himself to me.

It is nonsense, what I am asking of him, but I don’t withdraw the question, nor try to qualify it in any way with words. I only wait, seeing what he will say. Before I’ve fully understood either the question or the possible answers he might give, he’s agreed.

A surrender lives in that agreement.

I feel shame there, too, like he knows he should say no, but he cannot––will not. He clasps my fingers, and I see tears in his eyes. They bewilder me, touch me sharply through the pain and he pulls me closer until…

He kisses me. It is a brief kiss. Clumsy. Awkward. Yet it is tender, too. Meaning lives there, more meaning than I can comprehend. I feel him agree again, and it feels final that time. It is absolute. He is certain now.

The vow is set. It is more than a promise.

It feels like an ending and a beginning, all at once.

Even as I think it, the night sky disappears. Above us, light weaves into complicated patterns, in and out like a shuttlecock between silk threads. I have a fleeting impression of time removed. The weaving of the threads grows more and more complicated, more subtle, more beautiful and intimate and more connected to my heart.

I watch a painting form in that vastness of sky, a painting of fiery, diamond light, in a pattern too breathtaking for words. My struggle stops, even as the pain I felt before melts into warm breath, a feeling of ending, of beginning.

I know, somehow. This is familiar to me.

I feel it in him, too, that surge of familiar.

The feeling is so heart-wrenching, so intense, I cannot see anything else.

He belongs to me. He belonged to me before I asked the question.

We know one another here, and a timelessness lives in that knowing, something that lives so far from my conscious mind it feels almost alien. That deep sense of familiar is something I can’t explain to myself, something I understand without words, without really understanding it at all.

Something is… different.

I don’t know it yet, but it will never be the same again.
