MY REVIEW
.
Did the synopsis grab me? Sure did. Multiple personalities. A doctor who just wants to help their patient. And alters who have their own agendas. All the makings of an exciting psychological thriller.
.
This was a thriller. But it was also a ‘feeling’ story. I didn’t expect such an emotional empathy toward the patient’s alters. It was clear some very bad things occurred in the patients life that caused his mind to fracture in able to cope, to survive. The author did such a superb job of bringing the alters to life. To giving them such a presence. At times I pictured them as all standing in the same room, waiting for their chance to step forward.
.
I mentioned the alters had their own agendas. Boy did they ever. I couldn’t help but worry about the psychiatrists ability to handle such a charged endeavor. Danger and violence were palpable. It was mentioned that their were four personalities. I noticed that the doctor met three. It kept nagging at me. Was the fourth Justin, or was the fourth alter remaining hidden? If so, why?
.
To say I was invested in finding out how it all wrapped up is a sure thing. Did I see it clearly? Not at all. And I was set back on my heels by the epilogue.

As with “Altered”, this novel is packed with suspense and emotion, mainly due to people from Justin’s past, including Frank Devlin, the man who has made himself the bane of the Wright family’s existence.

SO MANY THINGS START TO MAKE SENSE IN “AVENGED” — BOOK 3 of the Justin Wright Suspense Series.

It all starts with Richard Davis, Justin’s new patient seeking help for uncontrollable anger and hostility. He can barely walk a New York City street without exploding at the people around him. Can Justin relieve him of his negativity or is he too consumed with his own son Michael — a boy found after seven years in captivity who is now void of any compassion or joy?
As with the first two books, “Avenged” is teeming with emotion and suspense, not only because of Richard Davis and Michael’s issues but because Frank Devlin and Jade continue to haunt Justin and Mandy from afar. As with all Rob Kaufman books, readers get the ride of their lives on a roller coaster of thrills and uncertainty until the very last page.

IT’S BEEN 15 YEARS SINCE JUSTIN’S NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, and life has changed dramatically for the Wright family.

Michael, now a psychologist, has a past that’s catching up with him at the same time an unsatisfied patient is planning his revenge. Justin, now practicing from his home office, has a patient consumed by the fear of death — a young man scared of just about everything — including fear itself.

As both father and son deal with their patients’ problems and their own internal challenges, they also struggle daily with Mandy’s health issue, a potentially deadly illness that threatens to take away the most important woman in their lives.

Like every other Justin Wright book, “Scared” brings you into a suspense-filled world loaded with emotion, uncertainty and, of course, mind games. It’s a story rife with complicated people, some who are not only vengeful, but scared — of both life…and death.

IN THE GRIPPING CONCLUSION OF THE JUSTIN WRIGHT SUSPENSE SERIES, every burning question and hidden secret comes to light.

Writer’s Block—or My Characters Refusing to Cooperate?

Do I ever get writer’s block?

Absolutely.

Sometimes the words arrive so quickly that I can barely type fast enough. Other times I stare at the screen as though the next sentence has been hidden there in invisible ink.

During those moments, I usually discover that the problem is not a shortage of words. It is a shortage of trouble.

Thriller characters need problems. Serious problems. “The restaurant lost my reservation” may ruin an evening, but it rarely carries a novel for three hundred pages.

When I become stuck, I ask myself several questions: What is my character afraid of? What secret is someone hiding? What is the worst reasonable thing that could happen next? Then, because I write psychological suspense, I usually make it happen.

My characters must love me.

While writing ALTERED, I had a particularly useful source of narrative trouble: Frank Devlin and his alternate personalities. Frank enters the office of psychiatrist Justin Wright looking for help, but each alter brings a different voice, temperament, and possibility into the story. A scene can change direction depending on who appears, what that personality knows, and what Justin fails to understand.

Still, having several personalities available does not automatically eliminate writer’s block. It simply means more characters can refuse to cooperate at the same time.

When a scene stalls, I stop trying to force the plot forward and return to the character’s emotional conflict. What does Justin want at that moment? Why can’t he have it? What would he do that seems compassionate or logical but might make everything worse?

That last question is especially productive.

I also step away from the computer when necessary. A walk, a shower, or performing some dull household task often loosens the knot. Apparently, inspiration enjoys arriving when my hands are wet, I have no pen, and the nearest electronic device is in another room.

Most importantly, I remind myself that an imperfect sentence can be repaired. A blank page is much less cooperative. I write something, even when I know I may change it later. Movement creates possibilities, and possibilities eventually produce suspense.

The conflicts introduced in ALTERED continue to grow across the Justin Wright Suspense Series. Each book explores new threats and deeper consequences for Justin and his family, while building on the secrets, relationships, and emotional wounds established in the first novel. Readers repeatedly tell me they cannot put the books down.

So perhaps the best cure for writer’s block is simple: create enough trouble that even the author has to keep reading.
