I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

Well, I have sad news about my bananas. We had a cold front zip through and they didn’t make it. I suspected they wouldn’t after the hurricane battered the tree pretty badly. Maybe next year will be luckier.

Been reading tons of books. Especially horror as Halloween brings it out in me. Who am I kidding! LOL I always read horror.

And I’ve been watching lots of scary movies. Pulled out all of my DVDs and started rewatching them. I had no idea how many scary ones I owned. Also been binging on the telly. I’m halfway through Stranger Things 2. What is that weird critter? Eww!! Are you watching it? What do you think about this season? And I’m caught up through episode 8 in American Horror Story: Cult. I just don’t get it???

An update on the pecans. I took some more to the wholesaler and they weren’t any good. The rains caused dry rot. I guess it’s one more thing I’ll hope is better next year. All that money rotting in the shells. Dang!

Other than that, we’re having a cold snap. In the low 60s and breezy this weekend. Feels colder. And the nights are dipping down to 40. I got out the few winter clothes I own and washed them to get ready for cold weather. I think it’s time to go shopping! I spotted some cute leggins and sweaters the other day.

Do you have any plans for Halloween. What’s your favorite thing to do?

Stay at home and pass out candy?

Stay at home, turn out the lights, and act like you’re not home?

Watch scary movies?

Go see a scary movie?

Go to a Halloween costume party?

Host a Halloween costume party?

Take your kids trick-r-treating?

Or take yourself trick-r-treating?

Tell me your plans!

The Doll

by J.C. Martin

Genre:  Horror / Short Story

My Review

I watched a movie about dolls hanging in trees. Can’t remember the name of it. Actually, I think it was like a mini series. While the legend behind the dolls was different from this book, it stayed with me, making it an easy choice to read The Doll.

This is a short story, coming in at around 30 pages. Just long enough to put the scare on ya.

Joyce and her young daughter, Taylor, visit The Island of the Dolls while on a vacation. It’s got dolls of all kinds hanging in the trees and comes with a creepy legend.  Taylor falls in love with one of the dolls and soon she starts to change. What followed her home? What does it want? Need? How far will it go?

I kept thinking of that short film with Karen Black in the Trilogy Of Terror. You know it? The ugly tribal doll. It’s chain falls off. It stalks her in her apartment. You can hear the pitter patter as it runs after her. Super creep!

This might not have a doll chasing the girl, but it oozes tension. You keep waiting for something bad to happen. The combination of eerie dolls and Palo Mayombe, the dark practice of Santeria, ensures something bad will occur.

The author got creative with this little tale, filling it with atmosphere and suspense. And it’s got a ‘killer’ ending.

Synopsis

The Island of the Dolls is a strange and eerie tourist destination in Mexico, where hundreds of decomposing dolls hang from trees like grisly Christmas ornaments. On a trip to the island, Joyce Parker’s daughter falls in love with a beautiful but sinister doll. Soon after, she starts developing strange mannerisms that concerns Joyce. Her research into the doll’s past reveals a dark history, and the curse of a lonely child spirit.

Dolla are such creepy things. They are perfect for horror stories. Here are some other books I’ve read with creepy dolls in them.

Porcelain

by William Hage

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

As a little girl, I wasn’t crazy about dolls. Sure, I had my barbies, but those bigger dolls, the ones that were almost actual size, with those creepy eyes, nope. I didn’t like them. It always felt they were watching me, their eyes following me. Now, all grown up, I still don’t like them.

I love horror, whether reading it or watching it. There are lots of movies about dolls. Let’s see. There’s all those Puppet Masters movies. How about Chuckie? Now, that’s one messed up doll. I would never have bought that for my kid. And now we have Annabelle. Have you seen The Conjuring? That doll was scary evil and wasn’t even the main plot in the movie.

I can go back much further. Ventriloquists. Their dolls come to life. Seen a few different takes on that idea.

So yes, the whole doll taking on a life of its own has been done before. It’s the author’s ability to take that and hone it to their own tale that reveals their talent and creativity. William didn’t disappoint me.

A weary traveler stops at a bed & breakfast for the night. It’s a rather lovely place with lots of collectibles on display.

The older woman who owns the place explains that each item has a history, it’s own story.

When the woman is pulled away from the conversation by a phone call and the guest kills time looking over the many objects, one in particular catches his eye.

A porcelain doll, quite lovely. His daughter would love it.

When the guest checks out in the morning, the doll travels with him to his condo. There it will wait until he visits his daughter.

But the doll won’t wait for long. It has quite a history and is ready to make a new one.

Once the doll began it’s rampage, I asked myself what I would do. Would I take it back where I got it from? I had a feeling either the old woman or the place wouldn’t be there anymore. Or, the doll would just return to get me so why bother. I’d just have to figure out how to deal with it.

I thought I saw the end coming. I was so wrong about that. Once the author revealed the dolls history, it went every which way but the way I thought it would.

The suspense was nail biting. If this were a movie, I’d be peeking through my fingers.

Scary good stuff.

Rag Doll

by Troy McCombs

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

My Review

At about 14 pages, I hardly blinked before I was finished reading Rag Doll.

Lucas’s young daughter Lucy just has to have the rag doll. She discovered it in a pile of stuff at a yard sale.

The thing is frayed and battered, ugly actually, but she wants it and so Lucas buys it for her.

Here’s where the author sets the tone. It’s dark now and a thunder storm is raging. A must for most horror settings.

The rag dolls name is Sandy and it will come as no surprise that the she comes to life.

The author even throws in a babysitter. Poor thing. She must be the sacrificial lamb.

There are some creepy scenes that reminded me of Dean Koontz’ Tick Tock and voodoo dolls.

You get just enough to connect with characters, kind of recognize them, and then the fun begins. There are no wasted words. The author goes straight to the gut.

I never get tired of this kind of horror story. I suspend my disbelief and dive in, getting all kinds of creeped out and having fun.

The ending is deliciously horrific.

Bad Juju

by Dina Rae

Bad Juju

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

Genre: Horror

My Review

Tom and Jessica Novak are proud to be doing God’s work. They’ve traveled to Port au-Prince as part of a missionary group with others of their church. They’re going to help with rebuilding the island after the 7.0 earthquake that shook all of Haiti, causing massive destruction.

Their 15-year-old son Henry’s Asperger’s Syndrome had them questioning their decision. He’s intelligent and quite functional, but changes in routine, surroundings and new faces could cause problems. Henry doesn’t communicate well or understand social interaction.

But Henry’s the one that urged them to go. He’s been obsessed with Haiti. So here they are, the whole family, including Henry’s younger sister Natalie, who’d rather be back home. This is not her idea of a great summer vacation.

Since Henry’s been doing so well, they decide to extend their stay. If they had only left earlier, they wouldn’t be searching for their missing son. Henry has simply vanished and wandering away from the protection of the armed camp is dangerous. There are a lot of bad people out there and he wouldn’t stand a chance against them.

If they had only known the reason Henry wandered away, they never would have brought him there.

My favorite character is Jake. He befriends Henry when they meet in detention class. They aren’t really bad boys, just a couple of kids who got in a little trouble.

Jake is a kind-hearted boy, helping out the elderly residents in his trailer park. He does odd jobs, cleans house and run errands for the less able ones. You wonder how he turned out so well when you learn he suffers violent beatings from his uncle. After losing his parents he came to live with his aunt and uncle and his aunt suffers the same abuse.

Jake brings Henry home with him after school to introduce him to his favorite neighbor, Lucien.

Lucien is a powerful bokor, a voodoo priest, and with his black skin, unruly, long white hair and piercing eyes, he looks every bit the part.

It becomes a regular routine for the boys to visit with Lucien after school and after much pleading, he begins to teach them about Vodun, the voodoo religion, beginning with simple spells and hexes.

Lucien feels death coming for him and can’t bear the thought of all his vast knowledge and power going with him to the grave.

After Jake receives another very brutal and bloody beating, the three decide to create a voodoo doll to rid Jake of his uncle.

This is where it all starts to go weird.

Bad Juju was a surprise. I thought it was going to be all about voodoo, raising the dead, and voodoo dolls. Well, it was. I learned how to do voodoo, what the religion is about, good and dark arts of it, and how to raise someone from the dead. Some of it creeped me out, but a lot of it was really funny.

Having the characters as teen-age boys made this story. Boys will be boys and they had me rocking and  rolling! I can’t wait for you to meet the dead guy.

Getting back to the surprise part, there were several deeper subjects tackled throughout this book and I could tell the author did a lot of research and included that knowledge in the story to make it believable and engaging.

If you’re looking for something different, look no further. Bad Juju has plenty of interesting characters, some tough topics, plenty of laughs, and lots of scary voodoo magic. Oh Yeah, I almost forgot the zombie!

I felt like I got a crash course in voodoo, like voodoo for dummies.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

So, a new season of The Walking Dead starts tonight. I know what I’ll be doing.  I’ve been avoiding any teasers about what’s coming. I hate when they give teasers. I don’t want to know anything until the show starts. I watched Stephen King’s 1922. Have you seen it yet? I’m going to do a post about soon.

In other news. still reviewing a bunch of horror and thrillers for my 31 Days Of Thrills And Chills feature. I think some lighter reading will be required after this month. LOL Other than that, been watching some movies and relaxing when not at work.

Oh, we got a cool down spell, I actually needed jeans and long sleeves for a couple of days. Only in the morning though. Once that sun got above the trees it warmed up nicely. The nights were chilly and no humidity. Now it’s back to steamy but not as hot and the nights aren’t cool anymore. I’ll take it though. Me and winter don’t agree with each other.

And here’s new pictures of my bananas. They continue to grow but I notice the stalk is starting to turn brown where it connects to the broken part of the tree.

They actually are still trying to grow. Guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

It’s been interesting since my last Sunday post. Hurricane Nate came in late Saturday night. It was super windy and tons of rain. But no major damage. It did blow down all the pecans in my trees. It sounded like bombs going off. I went out Sunday morning and there were thousands of them on the back porch and in the front and back yard.

20171014_120321

I’ve been gathering them up and the pecan wholesaler opens Monday. Hoping for a good price as these are Elliot’s, the cream of the crop. We’ll see.

20171014_120250

And I’ve got some iffy news about my bananas. The batch was on the tallest tree and it was above the roof line. The winds blasted it and broke it. Dang it!

20171014_120407

They actually are still growing and looking better than the first few attempts. The top of the tree is bent over but still green so who knows. I think they were protected hidden between the other trees and might make it. Those pale yellow flowers are now getting longer and becoming little bananas. Cross you finger that they keep going! I know they look small but this is when the actually banana forms and gets  bigger.

Happy Sunday everyone!

My internet modem is acting strange and I keep losing WiFi so I apologize in advance if I don’t make it to your posts. Of course, it happens on the weekend when I can’t do anything about it. Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

Been doing the same old, same old. LOL Binging some shows, reading a bunch of books, and dragging myself home every day after work. It’s still super hot and muggy and I feel so drained after working outside all day. One good thing about the hot weather, the pool is the perfect temp and I’m loving every day I can still enjoy it.

My bananas are finally starting to grow again. Crossing my fingers the heat wave lasts long enough to give them a chance to grow. The raised leaf wasn’t open at all yesterday. And there are already some flowers.

20170923_121244

And who believes that money grows on trees? Anyone who grows fruits and nuts do. I’m sitting here right now listening to the loud thuds of pecans falling on my roof. Look at these beauties.

20170923_121418

I have Elliot’s, the most desired of pecans. So meaty and tasty. I’ll be doing a lot of crawling around on the ground to gather them and sell them at our local pecan warehouse. Of course, I’ll keep some for myself.

I’ll be heading over to your posts soon. Happy Sunday!

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

You’d never know that fall is coming from the weather we’re having here. It’s back up to 90 and the sun is so hot your skin feels like it’s on fire. Makes that pool so delicious to dip into. I figure I have quite a few more weeks until I’ll be thinking first before jumping in. LOL

Been reading a lot. Mostly horror and thrillers for my 31 Days Of Thrills And Chills posts in October. But I’ve slipped in a few cozies and some children’s books too.

And been watching a lot of shows and movies. I’m binging Longmire right now. Starting back at the beginning and watching the entire show now that it’s concluded. The first new episode in Fear The Walking Dead felt like a dud for me. Two hours of not much of anything. Did you watch it? What did you think?

Now I’m waiting for The Walking Dead and Survivor.

This is last weeks photo for the bananas.

20170909_072747

Nothing has changed with my banana tree so I thought to share some of the other things growing in my back yard.

This is the corner of my house where the banana trees grow. As you can see, that new leaf coming out of the top goes way above my roof.

20170916_132739

I bought this plant at the local nursery several years ago. I was trimming it to look more like a tree but this year I left it alone.

20170916_132756

It has these beautiful violet flowers that dangle on thin threads from the branches. In the sun they look blue.

20170916_151255

I’ll hopefully have new photos of progress on my bananas to share next week.

I’ll be heading over to your posts soon. Happy Sunday!

My new books this week. Got a couple of thrillers. And both are new authors for me so I’m very excited to read these.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

What’s been happening this week? Well, the news is all about Hurricane Irma. A massive storm heading for the west coast of Florida. So far, it’s not supposed to do much in my area. I live about one hour west of Pensacola, which is located in the Florida panhandle. This storm has moved more west that first reported and I’m anxiously waiting for the turn to the north that is supposed to happen. Keep all those in Irma’s path in your thoughts and prayers.

And here is some from this week.

20170909_072747

We had a little cold front move through and I think it caused the flowers to fall off. A new leaf has peeled back so I’m hoping for more flowers and should see some bananas forming soon. I hope!

Here are some of the flowers that fell off.

20170909_073050

I was researching on line and found out that the large purple thing is actually filled with flowers and is kind of like a bulb. It will continue to open up and produce rows of flowers and bananas. And you can eat the flowers too.

I’ll be heading over to your posts soon. Happy Sunday!

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

This week seemed so long. Probably because it was my first full week back at work. LOL Every day I came home and collapsed on the couch. Couldn’t seem to find the energy for my blog either. I think this is the least amount of posts for a week that I’ve done in some time. I managed to read a few books. And I watched the last two episodes of Game Of Thrones. Bazinga! What a season finale. Now a whole year until the last season.

I did manage to squeeze in some pool time in between rain storms. Hurricane Harvey dumped some rain on us, but nothing like in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Those poor people. Now we have Irma churning in the open waters. Going to be huge but I don’t think it will come our way. Crossing my fingers!

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

This was a weird week. I was off of work on Monday and Tuesday because the owners went north to watch the eclipse. I enjoyed that time by reading, napping, swimming in the pool, and binging more Game Of Thrones episodes. I’m now into season six.

What made it weird is I kept getting my days mixed up. I had a doctor’s appointment and missed it because I thought Wednesday was Monday since it was my first day back to work. LOL  Ever done that? It continued to be messed up all week. Until Friday. With the weekend starting it all fell back into place.

My prayers go out to those caught in the path of Hurricane Harvey. Once the hurricane hit the hot waters of the Gulf it exploded into a Category 4, the first major hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast since 2005. Keep them in your prayers.

Here’s some new pictures of my bananas.

20170826_124514

The last of the cover leaves have fallen off and if you look closely at the top of the bunch where they meet the stalk you can see them starting to take shape.
