by Lori Handeland

Genre: Paranormal Women’s Fiction

.

Just when I thought it was safe to go home…

I’ve been running too long. I’d gotten sloppy. Sloppy gets you captured. But it turns out, the very one I thought I had to hide from, saved me.

I just want to live peacefully. But happy family, er, pack reunions don’t seem to be in my future. When my secret is used against me, I’m forced to run again. This time, help comes from the most unexpected source, the greatest werewolf hunter of all time, Edward Mandenauer.

To get what we both want—the end of the sadistic, yet sexy, werewolf Zane—Edward and I join forces. But Zane isn’t working alone. Nor is he who or what he says he is. He’s much, much more…

All I want is the life I believed I’d lost, but at this rate, I’ll end up captured, imprisoned, enslaved . . . or dead.

From the voice of New York Times bestselling author Lori Handeland, the final installment in the Midnight Madness trilogy takes you deep into her Nightcreature world, complete with the humor, depth of characterization and fast-paced plot lines the author is known for while showcasing her incredible range.

I strolled down the deserted streets of Wisconsin’s capital city and tried to think of a plan. I could only come up with one.

The first person I saw getting out of a car was in the employee lot of a twenty-four-hour diner. I approached her, and she smiled. I was an older woman, nonthreatening, no danger. I felt bad about what I was about to do, but I did it anyway, smiling back as I touched my fingertips to my temple. “Give me your car keys, then go to work.”

She repeated my instructions, handed over her keys, and reached into the midnight-blue Hyundai SUV for her purse.

“Leave it.”

Sadly, my borrowed pockets held nothing but lint. Should have thought ahead and asked my daughter for some cash—though like most Gen Zers, she rarely had any. But what difference did stealing make on top of grand theft auto?

At the next gas station, I used the woman’s cell phone—no password, shame on her—to search for the Leonard farm, then scribbled the address on a stray receipt. I tossed her phone into a sewer grate before heading inside where I bought a burner, then asked for a map of Wisconsin.

“You could just get this one.” The clerk pointed to a more expensive phone. “Then you could GPS it.”

I’d have to connect to my personal provider for that. And the entire point of tossing my own phone days ago, as well as tossing the phone of the waitress I’d robbed just now, was so Gideon couldn’t find me.

I shook my head. “Maps?”

The guy pointed to a revolving wire carousel hidden behind a display of energy drinks, which contained maps of Wisconsin and the surrounding states.

“I don’t know the last time anyone bought one of these.” The clerk scanned the barcode. “I hope it doesn’t send you down a road to nowhere.”

I wasn’t worried. The roads of northern Wisconsin didn’t change much. The Department of Transportation spent its budget on the byways that got the most use, for instance, the ones that went into and out of big cities or those that went into and out of the state. Considering those restored Victorians, Viroqua had been there since the mid-to-late 1800s, which meant the roads surrounding it had been there that long as well with only baseline maintenance and little to no rerouting.

In less than two hours, I turned off a highway that had been mostly deserted and rattled down the rutted gravel driveway that led to the Leonard farm. The moon’s silvery glow had been dulled to pewter by a sky filled with clouds. I still heard the moon singing, but her voice had waned, night by night, since she’d been full. According to every werewolf I knew, that music would grow louder as she waxed from new to full.

The just-sprung buds of corn in the fields fluttered, their shade a muted moss shrouded in ice, while the mud in the barnyard recalled a cup of espresso, the puddles undulating like a raven’s wing. In that vista of sepia, the white clapboard house and outbuildings shone pearlescent.

The night held its breath, but all I heard were the clicks of a cooling engine and the beginnings of a breeze. Shouldn’t there be the lowing of cows? Shouldn’t there be cows? Shouldn’t there be someone waking up to deal with the cows?

The porch steps creaked like those in a Gothic novel. I’d read quite a few once I’d discovered that Gothic lit became popular during the Victorian period. I’d been partial to Dracula. Kind of hilarious now.

I lifted my hand to knock, and the door screeched open. Maybe not so hilarious. If there were werewolves, were there vampires?

“Bloody hell.” I bit my tongue to stem the hysterical laughter that bubbled up over my choice of curse words. “Hello? Anyone home?”

As I didn’t want to be shot for trespassing, I remained perched on the threshold. Then it occurred to me that while that might hurt, it probably wouldn’t kill me because the chances of a dairy farmer in Viroqua packing silver cartridges were slim to none.

I stepped inside. “I have information about Natalie.”

I’d thought of little else during the two-hour drive, but what could I tell the Leonards that wouldn’t get them wiped out by a werewolf for knowing it? All I had were two truths and a lie—she’d been kidnapped by sex traffickers, then killed. And me? I was with the FBI task force handling the case.

I’d believed it when Ash said it; I hoped the Leonards would believe it when I did. If not, I’d have to push them to do so, as well as to keep the news to themselves. Didn’t need any real FBI agents following up.

Not a great plan, but I had to work with what I had.

I listened for the sounds of someone getting out of bed, opening a door, flushing a toilet. All I heard was another creak. I wished I had a gun, but my fangs and my teeth and my inability to die except by silver were pretty good weapons.

However, I was here to tell the Leonard family a partial truth. I wasn’t going to be able to do that if I was a wolf. And I wanted to tell them, needed to. There were many, many girls who weren’t coming home. Many, many families who would never know where they’d gone or what had happened to them. This girl I could do something about.

I took a breath to call out again, and the door slammed behind me. I would have blamed the wind if not for the gun barrel pressed to the base of my skull. I went very still.

“I told you I’d kill you the next time I saw you.”

How long have you been writing?

40 years.

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

The main characters are usually there when I start but not completely.  Others just walk on in.  Surprise!

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

I do a lot of reading and Googling on settings and occupations. Then I start writing and do more specific research as I go.

Do you see writing as a career?

Yes.  It has been my only career.

What do you think about the current publishing market?

Different from how it was when I started, that’s for sure.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I read quite a bit and the only thing I don’t read much of (except for research) is non-fiction.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

Complete silence otherwise I get distracted.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

One book at a time.

If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Harry Potter!

Pen or type writer or computer?

I brainstorm with pen and yellow legal pads. I write on the computer, though I did start my first book on a typewriter.

A day in the life of the author?

I’m up very early so I can hit my elliptical, then I walk the dog and make coffee.  Next it’s dealing with my social media and any emails I put aside from the day before.

I try to start writing by 9 am.  Once upon a time I would write from the minute my sons got on the bus until they came home, but these days I’m lucky to get in 3 hours before I need to deal with promotion details for any sales I have running or books I am releasing.

Then there’s life . . .

As the only child of an elderly mother, there is a lot to handle.  And I must admit that my 3 grandchildren are dazzling and I am frequently dazzled beyond the point of anything else.

Do you have any advice to offer for new authors?

Keep writing.  The only way to fail is to quit.

Describe your writing style.

Fast paced plot and true to life characters dealing with astounding situations.

What makes a good story?

Great characterization, structure and pacing.

What are you currently reading?

Elin Hilderbrand’s THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND.

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

I’m a pantser all the way.  I’ve tried to outline and find I get bored with the story, which means I don’t continue with it.

Sometimes I will write the first chapter or two, then sketch an overview of the turning points and the ending, though all that is subject to change along the way.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Editing the beginning over and over, which means never reaching “the end.”  Push through.  The number of people who start a book, then don’t finish a book is epic.  Anything can be fixed but a blank page.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Start self-publishing the instant you hear about it.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from other genders?

There is always the temptation to create men the way you want men to be. And, to an extent, this is what writing romance is about.  However they need to be realistic too.  It’s a balancing act.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

I used to be able to write a 90,000+ word book in 3-4 months.  Now it would take me 9-12 months.  It is what it is.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

I do, I do, I do believe in writer’s block. The only way I’ve found to cure it, and sometimes only for a little while, is to push through the book I’m working on, don’t look back. Eyes on the prize of “the end.”

Then edit, edit, edit.

.

I found the country lane that led to where I was going. Several minutes later, the overgrown driveway spit me into a clearing tucked into a deep, dark wood. The place had always given me Hansel and Gretel vibes, but now, considering, it felt more Little Red Riding Hood.

I cast uneasy glances at the thick, dense trees, which, thanks to my fairy-tale thoughts—curse them!—appeared to heave and hum. Despite the ungodly hour, seemingly every available light fixture blazed within the gorgeous log home.

Why Frankie—my late husband’s assistant, a beautiful young man with ridiculously long, dark lashes and very shiny teeth—had built a place that fit him as well as shitkicker boots fit a gazelle had always been unclear.

Frankie’s baby—a peacock-blue 1957 Ford Fairlane convertible—shone beneath the light of the undulating moon, and before I could even knock, the door swung open.

Middle of the night and Frankie matched his car. Smooth. Cool. Classic. His cream trousers held a perfect crease, and his apricot button-down had never known a crinkle. The only indication of the ungodly hour were his bare, narrow feet.  We matched.

I lifted my hand. “Hi.”

His unwrinkled brow wrinkled. “People have been searching for you.”

Old news. The only one who hadn’t been, come to think of it, was Frankie. And now that I did think of it, and considering . . . everything . . . that was suspect.

“I told them you were visiting a friend.”

Oh. Right. I had said that. Had, in fact, pushed him with my mind—my innate werewolf gift—into believing it despite—

“Then someone mentioned you don’t have friends.”

That.

I had contractors. Suppliers. Consultants. I had made Patrick’s Victorian family home into a showplace once featured in Architectural Digest, something that had made Patrick proud of the place for the first, and last, time I could recall.

I had neighbors. Fellow members of charitable organizations. Spouses of other politicians. Basically acquaintances. I’d never fit in. Not anywhere. Ever. Except with Patrick. With Gideon. And I hadn’t wanted to.

But now would have been a good time to have friends. Someone I could go to for help besides my husband’s lover. But you get what you get.

The wind chose that second to rustle through the trees and waft the scent of rotting walnuts across my face. I tensed and whirled, spreading my arms wide, putting myself between that scent and Frankie.

But behind me—to the left and to the right—there was nothing but trees, and when I took another whiff . . . more nothing. Because I’d killed the last werewolf that smelled like that. I knew I had.

“Sarah, what the he—?”

I shoved Frankie inside and slammed the door, flicked the lock, looked for a dead bolt. Didn’t find one, but a dead bolt wasn’t going to help if a werewolf wanted in. A werewolf would just jump through one of the far too numerous windows.

“Did you ever consider storm shutters for those?”

“To prep for the hurricane that isn’t going to hit Wisconsin ever?” Frankie asked.

I started turning off the lights. “Better safe than sorry.”

Nothing Good Happens After Midnight

A Midnight Madness Nightcreature Novel Book 1

.

They say a mother will do anything for her child . . . I’m living proof

This nightmare began when I got the call every parent dreads. My daughter, Jenna, was missing from her college campus. Of course, my mind went to the worst place. After all, my late husband was a powerful senator. Was this some political payback?

I call in a favor and soon I’m partnered with an FBI sex trafficking agent. He tells me local girls have been disappearing for some time now, and he finally has a lead. But what we find at that abandoned warehouse is something out of a horror movie.

Werewolves! Two rival packs, their alphas fighting, winner take all––the pack and the trafficked girls. The werewolves must replenish their breeders, recently decimated by a virus that killed only the females.

But Jenna’s been keeping a secret, which only makes two of us. Though I should be angry, I know the lies I’ve told play a huge role in why we’re here. I’ll do anything to make it right. No way is my girl going to become a sacrificial mate for the greater good––even if she is the ‘chosen one.’ So, I do what any mother would do, I take her place, offering myself to Gideon, the winning alpha, as his mate.

Gideon’s goal is to live in harmony with the human world, but there are others who exist for the power, for the violence, and they don’t plan to let peace prevail.

There’s a civil werewolf war brewing and I am right in the middle of it.

When the phone rings in the middle of the night, everything changes.

Mother always said: Nothing good happens after midnight. I’d found in my forty-one years on this earth, in that at least, Mom had been right.

I sat up so fast I jiggled the mattress. I froze, my gaze shifting to, then away from the empty side of the bed. I still hadn’t gotten used to Patrick not being there. Would I ever?

The shrill slice of sound continued to cut through the oh so silent night. I only had one ringtone left on my allowed calls after that indelible hour of midnight, and this was it. My heart rate increased from WTF? to OMG!

“Jenna?”

“Sorry, Mrs. Sullivan. It’s Cammy.”

I searched my memory for the identity of Cammy, feeling slow, stupid despite the far too rapid rate of my heart.

Spring, same time two years ago, my OB had diagnosed the reason for my newly sluggish brain and sudden ability to fry eggs atop my head as premature menopause.

Look at it this way, you won’t have to worry about getting pregnant for very much longer.

Not that I had for decades. However, having my body betray me like that—basically saying I was old, when I never really got to be young—had stung. It still did.

Cammy’s tentative voice brought me back to the right now. “I’m Jenna’s roommate.”

My skin prickled with heat and a fine sheen of sweat started up at my hairline. “What’s wrong?”

“Jenna hasn’t been here since Tuesday.”

Here being the University of Wisconsin. I’d been so proud when Jenna had decided to go to UW like me. Or like the me I could have been, would have been if not for her.

“Tuesday,” I repeated. “But it’s . . .”

Come on, brain, don’t fail me now!

Thursday! I thought at the same time Cammy said, “Thursday.”

For an instant, I was near ecstatic to have concluded something at the same speed as a millennial. Then I did the math, never my strong suit even before all the brain-fart BS. “That’s two days, and you’re just calling me now?”

“Sometimes she pulls an all-nighter. Stays at the library or goes to a study group. But she lets me know. I didn’t really worry until I called her phone, and it was . . .”

My skin did that prickle again. Jenna’s phone was in Cammy’s hand, obviously, since she was talking to me on it. That I hadn’t asked why earlier put another notch in my losin’ it belt.

“Her phone was in her backpack,” Cammy continued. “In her room, along with her laptop and her books.”

Cammy paused, waiting for me to fill in the blanks. Jenna probably wouldn’t be studying without her backpack, and the notes and books and computer within. But even if she’d grabbed a few things and left the rest, she never would have left her cell phone. I didn’t think it had been out of her sight—more accurately, out of her hand—since I’d handed it to her when she was ten.

“In Lunar Lake, anywhere can be reached from anywhere in a handful of minutes,” Patrick had argued. “Even if she falls off her bike and breaks her leg, someone’s gonna be at her side quicker than she can make a call. She’s safer than safe, like every other kid in town. What are you worried about?”

When I lifted my eyebrows, he’d blinked, said, “Oh,” and that had been the last Patrick had said about that. He knew why I was the way I was better than anyone. It was one of the reasons I’d married him.

I’d devoted my life to raising Jenna. She was everything. The only thing. When she’d gone to college, I’d been proud but also terrified. This exact scenario—a midnight phone call, a missing child—played through my mind far too often. Sadly, what I should do about it had never played through as well.

“Hello?” Cammy’s worried voice broke into my thoughts. She probably thought I’d fainted. Or stroked out. I was tempted.

But all Jenna had was me now, and all I had was her. If that meant facing my greatest fear again, I’d face it. What choice did I have?

She was my baby.

PROLOGUE

THE FUTURE

“WILL IT HURT?”

“No Mrs McMillan it won’t hurt.”

“You’re sure?”

“Positive.”

“And it really works?”

Mrs Erica McMillan’s eyes are red, gritty, sore. She’s crumpled and defeated. She cried all morning. She cried for months. For a man she gave her life to. She’s hopeful the treatment will solve all her problems.

They’re in Dr John Applegate’s office. Dr Applegate sits behind a glass desk. He pushes his wire glasses up his nose.

“Yes Mrs McMillan, the treatment really works.”

Dr Applegate knows most patients come through the doors looking fragile, wishing on a dream, not quite understanding the treatment, not sure they believe it even. Now the pain in Mrs McMillan darkens into spiteful, narrow eyes.

“I want to forget him. I want my husband gone from my memory.” The hate boils inside her for what her husband did to her. How dare he. How dare he. She almost spits the next words out.

“I don’t want to know that man exists any more.”

Dr Applegate takes this in. He gets this a lot – misunderstanding. The people who sit opposite are exhausted. Weary. Burnt out. In pain. Emotionally, bitterly confused. This treatment is a last lunge at hope. He clears his throat.

“Mrs McMillan, I’m afraid you’re thinking of the movie The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.”

Dr Applegate’s seen the film a dozen times himself. The film starts where Kate Winslet’s ended a troubled relationship with Jim Carrey and he soon discovers – when she doesn’t recognise him at a counter –  she has had her memory of him deleted.

Mrs McMillan frowns in confusion.

“Isn’t that what you do? Make people forget the person they love? Isn’t that what you did with Cooper Hall?”

Cooper Hall. The woman who made the clinic accidentally famous because of her unusual request that resulted in the media frenzy.

“No I’m afraid not, Mrs McMillan.”

The confusion deepens.

“But please don’t despair. I said we can’t erase your memory of your husband. I didn’t say what we can do. We do something so much better.”

“What is it you do then?”

This is the part Dr Applegate enjoys, giving his patients back the emotional control they so crave. Giving them back command of their lives far from the emotions tearing them apart. He leans forward.

Mrs McMillan leans forward.

He places his elbows on the desk.

She waits, expectant.

He steeples his long fingers.

“It’s simply this Mrs McMillan. We erase your love.”

I’m a British author who loves page-turners. It doesn’t have to be a thriller. It can be anything, I just want to feel that desperate urge to turn the page. And if it grabs me on the first page…or the first paragraph…or the first sentence…Well! All the better.

I worked in the television industry for many years. However, though I’ve worked with words all my life, I’ve only recently decided to do something with it. I have a love of radio dramas and audio books and my writing has been heavily influenced by both.

I live on the English coast and love sea and nature reserve walks whenever I get the opportunity (at least once a week, sometimes more). I also love to wake early, long before the rest of the world has caught up with me.

Moccasin Trace

by Hawk MacKinney

Genre: Historical Fiction

Synopsis

It is July of 1859, a month of sweltering dog days and feverish emotional bombast. Life is good for widower Rundell Ingram and his hazel-eyed, roan-haired son, Hamilton. Between the two of them, they take care of Moccasin Hollow, their rustic dogtrot ancestral home, a sprawling non-slave plantation in the rolling farming country outside Queensborough Towne in east Georgia. Adjoining Ingram lands is Wisteria Bend, the vast slave-holding plantation of Andrew and Corinthia Greer, their daughter Sarah and son Benjamin.

Both families share generations of long-accepted traditions, and childhood playmates are no longer children. Against this rustic idyll of hard work and gracious living comes inflexible discord and divided loyalties that mutilate ties of blood and bond, tearing at their lives as smoke and battle no longer so faraway crashes and maims ever closer. Ahead of the on-coming ranks of Blue, foragers and bumlers burn, loot, scavenge and kill. Hamilton faces agonizing sacrifices with dreadful consequences. With little else than his wits, he tries anything to protect Sarah, their unborn child, his sickly father, and Sarah’s family.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Back at his post behind the oaks, it wasn’t long before the Trace crowded up with a hodgepodge mishmash of wagons and carts headed as far from Augusta as they could get. As he silently watched, it seemed the whole of the Parish was on the move. His thoughts jarred by the hurried plunge of a rider coming toward him through the canebrake. He dropped to one knee, his rifle to the ready, just as Nat and one of Ben’s mules busted into the clearing.

Nat hauled up, slid off the mule, “Mister Ben said to git the word to you — Yankie patrols spotted this side of Sandersville. They burnin’ ever’thing, barns, houses, killin’ what they don’t take. Tearin’ Jericho out’a ever’thing they git their hands to.”

Hamilton grabbed his mare’s reins, pulled into the saddle, “Get back to the Bends. Tell Ben you found me, and Nat — keep a sharp eye out. Advance lookouts could be anywhere.”

Hamilton, off in a mad tear, nudged the mare faster. Wind whistled in his ears, low hanging limbs slashed his sweaty face, horses’ hooves flinging clods high behind him. Yankies moving that fast wouldn’t ask questions; they’d burn, move on, Sarah and their child be refugees like the pitiful wagons he’d seen. He reined up next to the porch, his horse skidding as he swung out of the saddle.

Bessie was on the front porch, “See you comin’ fast.” Pistol in her hand, she threw quick glance out across the fields. “Nat find you?”

“Yeh…he’s on his way to let Ben know…they might be making a wide sweep into Augusta from this side.”

“Missy’s cramps reg’lar, an’ you be the only help. Yankie or no Yankie, Missy an’ that chil’ in her belly need both of us.”

“If it’s their main bunch they’ll have bummers way ahead of their army.”

“Lordy mercy — nobody gonna stop that ceptin’ the Lord.” Bessie shoved her pistol deep in her pocket. “Don’t matter how many trompin’ ’bout, ain’t nobody gittin’ twixt me’n Missy an’ her chil’. When the Lord say that baby come, fightin’ gonna wait, but Jehovah sure gonna have a handful.”

“I’ll keep watch out by the barns.”

Bessie started inside and stopped, “Maybe watchin’ from the barn ain’t the best next thing. Mistress Corinth’a be upset we don’t let her know her grandchil’ comin’ so she can come help. When she do, young Benjamin alone in that big house settin’ there all big an’ white. You knows what I means — Yankies cain’t miss it. Bein’ hot-headed he won’t budge, an’ now ain’t the time for bein’ spiteful ’bout which soldiers got the most bullets — git shot dead. You’n me both know how that cut down Mistress Corinth’a.”

“Might be best to get Mother Greer here while we can,” said Hamilton fighting his own fear.

“If Mistress Corinth’a come she best while it daylight. Missy’s cramps likely won’t be reg’lar for a spell. ‘Fore things git busy, time is now to hotfoot over there, an’ git back here quick-like.”

“Tell Papa where I’m headed.”

“Don’t need tellin’ Mister Rundell, he been up ‘fore daybreak, his gun primed and ready. We manage…you make double-sure your butt git back here in one piece.” Shook her head, “Sweet Lord…what a mixed-up world you bringin’ this chil’ into.”

Hamilton was into the saddle. Gave the mare her head, didn’t bother with gates, jumped the fences, pushed her to a full-out gallop. He stayed clear of the Trace, cleared hedgerows and fences, splashed through slough bogs. Before he realized it, he burst through a squatter’s camp, scattering pots, pans, campfires, ramshackle shelters, and stampeded several horses. Startled poachers reached for rifles. He spurred the mare and disappeared into the brush, leaving them with nothing to aim at. Racing faster, he finally caught glimpses of the white unperturbed columns of the Bends. As he came out onto the wide buggy approach to the house, he glanced behind, making sure no one was on his tail.

Nonbinary, Trans, Pan, And Lovesick

by E.S. Corby

Genre: LGBTQIA+ Poetry

Synopsis

Sex is awkward! Gender is confusing!

Discovering his gender and sexual identities in the lonely dungeon of the pandemic, Echo Corby found an outlet through poetry. Graduating high school as everyone was thrust into isolation, friends were hard to find and love was even harder. Loneliness made him crave connection even more, but what did he like and who would love him?

Piecing together the queer world, Corby uses comedy and anecdote to express the uncomfortable ins and awkward outs of gender, sex, love and all outrage that comes with categorization. This collection of autobiographical poetry is a form of release and expression of the vibrant emotions that so many of the LGBTQIA+ community struggle with.

Corby prides himself as an open-book. The vulnerability enclosed within these pages proves as much.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Plant Shop

I went to a plant shop with my family/friend,

And knocked things over like a freight truck making a tight turn,

In the shop with candles and glass things and books propped on spindly legged tables,

You’d wonder why I was so concerned,

Of course something would fall! —But no.

I’m not usually this uncoordinated,

And compared to the family/friend I brought along,

The person my family doesn’t trust with any drink without a cap,

Who was suddenly surefooted in contrast to me,

And as lithe as sun-basking deer.

The reason for my klutziness I realized as we left,

Was I had a crush on the person behind the counter.

And when I asked them to make a cactus and succulent array,

Maybe it was an apology for my prudence and an excuse to stay.

In the general area, while they made me my pot,

I knocked over dirt after the candles, I knocked over a lot.

When I spilled all those candles onto the ground,

The most upsetting thing was that they weren’t even around!

I’d never been that clumsy, I didn’t think,

Shatter glass, spill dirt,

Then I turn pink,

When they’re there and they smile at me.

Of course, I offered to pay—

They declined the offer, smiling.

Wait, isn’t that the American way?

But in Europe they don’t do that, the store writes it off as tax.

I wish I had known that before I let my companion assure me that I didn’t need to

To make me relax.

Is it desperate to ponder if they had let me pass free,

Because they were actually attracted to me?

Their coworker looked peeved,

No—outright upset.

But they smiled perhaps dissimilar to anyone I’ve met.

I mentioned the dorms; they knew I wasn’t twelve.

They must have assumed I was a lesbian like everyone else.

I know they assumed this of me because of a conversation after,

Where my family/friend said to me that they hadn’t even asked her—

They had told her that we made a great couple.

I didn’t ask of course, but based on the conversation’s context,

It seemed clear my companion didn’t correct them.

Why didn’t she correct them? Maybe it didn’t feel right,

When we spilled in their store and made their shift tight,

With cleaning up the glass and the bits of dirt

That I left in my wake when I turned my metaphorical skirt

To the door with my cactus in hand.

I don’t claim to know their pronoun,

I’d never just assume,

But they could quite possibly have been a lesbian too.

And in that case, maybe I would dare to be a lesbian for a day.

Or is that too self-destructive to muse then to say?

Now I stare at the wall,

Placidly daydreaming,

Of a date we might have had,

Or a life with some meaning.

Maybe I’m just depressed,

Or it’s just PMS,

But I consider a life that isn’t such a stagnant mess.

No pandemic—I’m in college,

Surrounded by peers,

And I’m not suffering from the loneliness,

That makes minutes feel like years.

And my family/friend keeps laughing,

About the stuff that I spilled,

In the store with my crush,

Where I can’t hope to rebuild,

A relationship with them because they think I’m a double—not single—lesbian.

Having started writing “seriously” as an ignorant fourteen-year-old, Echo has progressed in his writing and editing skills since finding the inspiration in middle school. His whole life, his imagination has always driven him in the creative writing and arts fields. The imagination of childhood has never left him but has evolved into something malleable to his career and tolerable in his vocabulary and sentence structure. Echo’s writing and other creative endeavors have deep relevance to his personal life, as his characters, world and themes always reflect aspects of his personality and identity in ways that may go beyond the average reader’s comprehension. Often writers add elements of themselves to their characters, as it is easier to write what we know, but Echo goes beyond that in exploring deeply sentimental to traumatic elements in his life as a form of therapy for himself and others tackling similar internal conflicts. As a trans masc, nonbinary, pansexual man discovering his identity in the middle of a pandemic, his writing also acts as a way of exploring himself deeper as well as dealing with mental health issues he has been struggling with his whole life. Writing is both deeply personal for him and also something he has always wanted to share with the world. He feels emotions are better told then hidden and that building a community is extremely important to recovery and rejuvenation.

Beerfest

by Lilo Moore

(European City Breaks)
Publication date: September 1st 2023
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

Two best friends, a tipsy Oktoberfest dare and one kiss that could change everything.

It’s been fifteen years since big-shot marketing manager Fi first met her bi best friend Max. Living on different continents has had its challenges, but she’s determined that their friendship will be as strong as ever when she arrives in Munich for an Oktoberfest reunion with their study abroad friends. There’s no one she loves like her Max, even if he has finally grown up a bit and now runs a microbrewery.
But instead of lazy conversations and comfortable day-drinking, as they’d always done when they were younger, the reunion is a slightly desperate meeting of disillusioned millennials escaping real life – until Fi’s jetlagged, drunken rant about being a woman working in beer marketing goes viral and they’re roped into a bad-taste beerfest challenge. As she and Max and their friends from the international dorm tackle fairground stunts, physical challenges and bad karaoke, the one dare that changes everything is the simplest: kiss your teammate.
Now she can’t stop thinking about him in a very more-than-friends kind of way. When kissing leads to more and she discovers that her screwball best friend can talk dirty and light the sheets on fire in the bedroom, she can’t help seeing the years of their friendship in a new – and terrifying – light.
As the challenge progresses with thrill rides, pretzels, lots of lederhosen and a little public nudity, the dares are actually fun, when Fi completes them on her own terms. But the truth questions present the biggest danger to her future. What happens to her precious friendship – and her big promotion – when she admits to herself just how much Max means to her?

A spicy romcom with a bit of snark and a lot of swoon, for fans of Helen Hoang and Christina Lauren.

‘Fi and Max are single, so no drama, right?’ Isobel said. ‘You guys have probably kissed before.’

I tried to resist, but my gaze snapped to his. ‘Eh… no, we haven’t,’ Max admitted, still looking warily at me.

‘Never? Not even while drunk?’

‘Is it that hard to believe?’ I mumbled.

‘I mean, I know Max likes guys, but I thought he liked girls, too.’

He coughed and I wasn’t sure if he was laughing or choking. ‘I like women,’ he confirmed. ‘There are probably a lot of reasons why we never kissed before, but it won’t be a problem now.’

I stared at him, suddenly wondering what all those reasons were, when a moment ago, it had been self-evident to me why we’d never kissed. We’d never been into each other that way. But he’d said it wouldn’t be a problem now, as though he knew the filthy thoughts I’d been having about his mouth. I gulped.

He leaned towards me and I bent away instinctively. Thoughts flickering dangerously in his eyes, he blinked, and the next thing I knew, his hand was clamped around the back of my neck and he was holding me where I was – and sending shots of adrenaline down my spine.

As he brought his face close, I caught the scent of him, not the cheap deodorant he used to use but something spicy and a little bit older man that did something crazy to my hormones. His breath gusted over my cheek and, after one more pensive glance, his eyes drifted closed. Unable to stand the proximity, my eyes did the same, but it only set off all my other senses, especially the way the tiny hairs on my skin detected his nearness.

My mouth dropped open on a gasp.

Animal Trainer Justin Reed comes back home to Magnolia Bay and visits the shelter to find a dog actor for a TV series set in nearby New Orleans. Justin chooses Jett, but the shelter’s director rejects his application because Jett needs a finally-forever home, not a job with an end date. The shelter’s resident animal communicator proposes a win-win. Justin can use Jett as an animal actor if he also trains Jett as a service dog for Max.

Sara and Justin have no business indulging their mutual attraction. Sara is focused on her son, and Justin will be leaving soon. But Max and Jett have other ideas…

Excerpt from Coming Home to Magnolia Bay. The hero’s lost dog, Jett, learns that people can’t be trusted:

Jett reached for the savory-smelling meat, but all he got was a mouthful of air. The man dropped the meat and grabbed Jett’s collar, then whipped the hidden rope around his neck.

Jett tried to back out of the man’s grip, but he held firm, working to tie the rope to Jett’s collar. The big man was strong, but Jett was determined. He had almost backed out of his collar when some instinct told him that the collar was a link between him and his family. He stopped backing up and surged forward instead, knocking the man onto his butt. The light the man held flew through the air, and the rope slipped free.

Jett bolted into the darkness. He struggled through shallow, boggy fields of dark-smelling mud that his paws sank into. Tall plants hid all the landmarks and scent markers and pathways he’d thought he was following. Snakes slid through the marshy watery patches.

Alligators bellowed.

Coyotes howled.

Gunfire cracked.

The quick pop-pop-pop of gunshots happened once, then again. Jett cowered close to the ground until the crickets and frogs started singing again.

He slogged through soggy ground and tall weeds until he saw a light that didn’t come from the sun or the moon. The tall yellow sunburst in the dark sky wasn’t as far up as either of those. The yellow light hung off the side of a tall gray pole. An even bigger light—square and flat with a raised yellow blob and red squiggles in the center—hung between two thick black pillars at the top of the hill where a big white building sat like an upside-down box.

He crept closer, his muddy paws slipping on the steep grassy bank. The air smelled like cars and black roads and the powdery wings of bugs that flew around all the lights. Jett found a shadowed space behind the building where he could hide and rest and decide what to do next.

He closed his eyes and reached out to Max. A shining thread connected them.

But the thread didn’t lie neatly along the paths humans or animals might take to get from one place to another. And while Jett knew a lot about birds, he wasn’t one.

And the line that connected him to Max stretched over a wide, wild, uncrossable river.

Jett closed his eyes and tried to feel his way to Max. But instead, Jett felt Justin reaching out to him. Justin showed him a mixed-up wad of images and emotions and words. It all came at him like a rolled-up ball of twine. None of it made much sense because it was all clouded with fears and thoughts and emotions that Justin still carried from other times that had long since passed.

Humans hung on to those things.

Jett concentrated on unraveling the tangled messages Justin was sending. He came away with only one clear command to hang on to: If Jett would show himself to a trustworthy person and ask for help, they would be able to take him to Justin.

And then what? Jett wondered.

Justin promised that if Jett would come back to him, he would take Jett to see Max.

Jett sat up. He had to find a trustworthy person who was willing to help.

His only problem: There weren’t many of those around.

Meet the animals that inspired characters in the Welcome to Magnolia Bay Series!

Book Three: Coming Home to Magnolia Bay:

This is a picture of my dog Jed, the inspiration for the dog in Coming Home to Magnolia Bay.
All the cats love to snuggle with Jed.

My dog Jed is the inspiration for Jett, the dog character in Coming Home to Magnolia Bay. I
found Jed and his two siblings after they’d been dumped on the side of a country road. I was
driving into town when I saw these little ears popping up over the tall grass as the puppies
bounded toward my car. I could imagine their little voices calling out, “Hey, wait for us!” I pulled
over and got out of the car. At first, I thought, “How cute! They are covered in white spots! I
wonder what kind of dogs they are?” They looked, from a distance, like African Spotted Dogs.
But as they got closer, I realized that those white spots weren’t fur. They were the crusty, smelly
scabs caused by Demodectic mites, also known as mange. I opened the back door of the car
and said, “Get in.” The puppies didn’t hesitate. They boiled into the back seat of my car as fast
as they could. I drove them straight to the vet, hoping they’d take the puppies, since the vet was
(and still is) acting as the local animal shelter. But the vet shook his head. “The mange is too
bad. It takes too long and costs too much to treat. They’ll have to be euthanized.” So, of course,
I had them all vaccinated, bought the first round of mange treatment, and took them home with
me. As soon as the mange cleared up, I found homes for the other two puppies (Jethro and Ellie
May). Ellie looked like a chocolate lab, and Jethro was a handsome two-month-old puppy with a
sleek black coat and a small white blaze on his chest. But Jed had developed a skin infection,
so he was six months old by the time he was ready to adopt-out. By then, he had become just
another solid-black, half-grown dog who nobody wanted. Believe me, I tried. I offered Jed to
everyone I knew. I tried to give him away at least a hundred times. But nobody wanted a big
black dog. So, Jed became my dog. He is, and always has been, a Best Good Boy. But nobody
—not even me—recognized it. Because until I finally fell in love with him after a year of
resistance, he was just another big black dog nobody wanted.

Decades after a brutal childhood trauma,
a famous novelist finds his life shattered once again, in this unsettling
psychological mystery thriller.

After years of turmoil, Brooks Anderson is sober and has a stable life with his
wife and two kids. He should be enjoying life, but the persistent nightmares
and sleepwalking tell a different story.

As hard as he’s tried, Brooks can’t run away from the defining event of his
life: the senseless murders of his mother and brother during a vacation in
Montauk. An eight-year-old Brooks was the sole survivor of the carnage, which
left him in a catatonic state. He buried his pain and eventually overcame his
demons. Or so he believed.

Now an unscrupulous journalist is threatening to write about the deaths.
Fearful that the truth will be twisted to suit sordid ends, Brooks decides to
write his own book, despite the grave misgivings of his agent, wife, and
father.

However, when the journalist is brutally killed, Brooks finds himself in the
authorities’ crosshairs. To prove his innocence and exorcise the past, he digs
deeper into his psyche and that fateful summer. His relentless pursuit of the
truth soon leads Brooks down a slippery slope that challenges everything—and
brings him face-to-face with the real monster of Montauk . .

Excerpt:
(part of chapter one)

CHAPTER ONE

Sheldon
Adler, my agent at Crown-Hawkins and my brother from another mother, is late as
usual. No fucking surprise there. When you’re meeting Sheldon, you
have to tack on an hour at least. I’m at our usual table at La Bonne
Grenouille, the best little French bistro in Manhattan that no one has ever
heard of, sipping a glass of ice-cold watermelon seltzer. Sheldon has been
my literary agent—no, make that literary savior—since he read my first
published short story that didn’t involve erect penises in The New
Yorker
. He contacted me out of the blue and suggested Hey, why don’t
you write a book and I’ll sell it? I wrote Fallen Angels in
twenty-four days in a drug haze. When it was finally published, it sold
less than two hundred copies, but Sheldon was so fucking proud you would’ve
thought it sold two million. I resigned myself to being a
failure. Months later, the book was plucked out of obscurity by the senior
literary critic of The New York Times and nominated for a
Pulitzer. A tabloid dubbed me “The Heroin Hemingway.” The name stuck,
even though I’ve been sober and drug-free for more than twenty-five years.

Sheldon got
me my first million-dollar advance. He’s the wolf that other wolves hire,
and his reputation is well-earned. My biggest supporter, he stayed with me
through the lean, mean years when I wrote truly terrible books. Despite my
abysmal marital track record, I’m extremely loyal. I wouldn’t dream of
leaving Sheldon and believe me, other agents have tried to poach me. And
unless I did or said something unacceptable that blew up on social media—which
is why I don’t have any social media accounts—Sheldon wouldn’t kick me to the
curb or toss me under the bus. All my skeletons are out there. Well,
most of them.

A portly man
with a vague resemblance to the great Mafia chronicler Mario Puzo, Sheldon
huffs his way to our table. I can’t say it to his face, but Sheldon needs
to lose forty—make that fifty—pounds, if not for himself, then for his young children. I’m
sixty-five and I can still fit into the jeans I wore when I was
nineteen. It takes discipline and willpower, of which I have plenty to
spare.

After we
order and exchange our typical innocuous pleasantries about the weather,
politics, and soccer, for we’re both rabid fans, Sheldon downs a gin and
tonic. It’s his first of the day and not his last. “Brooks, how is
the book coming along?” he booms in a guttural Brooklyn accent that has
other diners turning their heads.

“Great,” I reply cheerfully. “It couldn’t be going any better. Gold, pure gold.”

He tilts his head. “Cassie says you haven’t been sleeping well.”

Cassie’s my
third and—if I have anything to say about it—last wife. She interviewed me
for a puff piece and months later, when the pregnancy test was positive, I knew
I’d met my Waterloo, no thanks to Abba. An abortion was out of the
question. Now we have two children under six, our lives are a
merry-go-round of sweet chaos. Last fall, I had a vasectomy so there will
be no more miniature Andersons polluting the planet.

I finish my
seltzer and signal for another. “You know I never sleep well when I’m
writing. I do my best work after midnight.” In the old days, that
didn’t necessarily apply to writing.

The waitress
delivers our meals: me, a grilled chicken Caesar salad with extra feta, and
Sheldon a porterhouse with crispy julienne potatoes and parmesan creamed
spinach. I eye his steak with unconcealed envy, but Cassie’s always after
me to eat healthier. I sigh and add more dressing to my salad. Cassie
would be pleased.

“Yeah, I
know. You have the constitution of fucking Secretariat. You did drugs
with Keith Richards and Lou Reed.” Sheldon cut into his steak; it’s not
just blue, it’s bloody raw. Just looking at it makes me queasy. “But
this is different. You’re writing about your goddamn family.”

“I can be objective.”

Sheldon puts
his fork down. “Not about this, Brooks. Come on. The
cold-blooded executions of your mother and brother—”

I suddenly
lose my appetite. Sheldon means well. Cassie does, too. But this
quasi-intervention is the last thing I need. “Sheldon, you know as well as
Cassie that I had no choice. I wasn’t going to let that fucking
guttersnipe drag my mother through the mud.” The fucking guttersnipe in
question is Marshall Reagan (no relation to the former president), a douchebag
posing as a journalist. His brand is writing scandalous, unauthorized
biographies of the rich and famous because he knows he can get away with
it. No dirt, no sleaze, is beneath him. And when he can’t find
anything salacious, he makes shit up and pulls it out of his ass like saltwater
taffy.

“You don’t know that.”

“Oh, but I
do know. I know exactly the angle he’d take. That my mother was
having an affair with Julian.” Julian Broadhurst, born in Lancaster,
England, in 1942. An artist who was supposedly the protégé of Peter
Max. Julian had long blond hair and drove a robin’s-egg-blue Aston Martin. Palmer
and I loathed him. “And when Mom wanted to end it, he killed her. But
that wasn’t enough, fuck no. When my brother tried to protect her, Julian
killed him, too.” I shake my head, the bile percolating like a fresh pot
of coffee. “My mother was brilliant. Graduated from Mount Holyoke
with honors. And she was utterly devoted to my father. To
us. The idea that she’d have a summer fling with that bohemian scumbag—” I
choke on the words (or is it a sliver of chicken that went down the wrong
pipe?). “And you know damn well that when that cocksucker Reagan’s done
tarring and feathering her, he’ll start in on my father, who has been nothing
less than a fucking saint. Saint Bernard.” I rap my fist on the
table. “It’s fucking ludicrous.”

Sheldon
nods, sympathy oozing from every pore. “All I’m saying is that you have a
lot on your plate. The book. The next book. Your father’s
gala. You’re writing a speech for that, right? Jesus fucking Christ,
Brooks. You’re not Superman. It’s bound to take a toll on you.”

“So, what
are you suggesting? I can’t return the advance. It’s already
spent.” Six million gone in a heartbeat. Lawyers. Trust
funds. The new house in Water Mill. And I was finally able to get my
ex-wives off my back with a tidy lump sum. For the first time in years, no
alimony to shill out every goddamn month. All thanks to Sheldon, who
hadn’t budged an inch during the multi-house book auction. He earned his
commission ten times over.

“No one’s
suggesting that. That’s crazy.” Sheldon’s halfway through his steak. “But
we can ask to push the deadline back by a couple of months.”

“No.” I’m
a stubborn son of a bitch. If there’s one thing I’m known for, it’s living
up to my contractual obligations. I’ve never missed a deadline. I
could be fucking pushing up daisies and I’d still deliver.

Sheldon sighs. “Why are you being so goddamn obstinate?”

“I’m well into the book now, it’s just a matter of research.”

“Really?” He gives me a side-eye. “Cassie says you’ve barely written the first chapter.”

I’m annoyed. Mostly because Cassie’s right. “It’s all in my head, Sheldon. Don’t worry.”

The Kandesky Vampire Chronicles Box Set

Books 1-4

by Michelle Drier

Genre: Paranormal Romance

.

This boxed set includes Books One through Four of the Kandesky Vampire Chronicles: Book One, SNAP: The World Unfolds; Book Two, SNAP: New Talent; Book Three, Plague: A Love Story and Book Four, DANUBE: A Tale of Murder.

Follow Maxie Gwenoch as she takes the job of Managing Editor for SNAP Magazine, the world’s largest and most popular gossip media covering celebrities around the globe.

First, she finds the owners of SNAP are a family of Hungarian vampires, then she discovers she’s the reason for an escalating war between the Kandeskys and their archrivals, the Huszars.

.

Book One, SNAP: The World Unfolds

SNAP, a multinational celeb TV show and magazine, is the holy grail for Maxie Gwenoch. When she snags the job as managing editor, she’s looking for fame, fortune and Jimmy Choos. What she finds is a media empire owned by Baron Kandesky and his family. A family of vampires. They’re European, urbane, wealthy and mesmerizing. And when she meets Jean-Louis, vampire and co-worker, she’s a goner.

The Kandesky vampire family rose in Hungary centuries ago. They gave up violence and killing to make a killing on the world’s commodities markets and with that beginning they built SNAP, an international celebrity multimedia empire. Now cultured…and having found food substitutes for killing…they’ve cornered the world market for celebrity and gossip journalism.

They haven’t fully left the past behind. Their Hungarian neighbors and rival vampire clan, the Huszars are starting to ramp up attacks, maybe looking to start a war to take over all the Kandeskys have built.

Maxie believes she’s found her ultimate career. She doesn’t realize that she’s found a family feud like none other, a centuries-old rivalry between vampire families, with her as the linchpin. Bells ring with Jean-Louis, but she doesn’t realize they’re alarm sirens until she learns that Jean-Louis is second in command of the Kandeskys…but by then it’s too late.

Book Two, SNAP: New Talent

In the second book of the SNAP Kandesky vampire series, Maxie Gwenoch, media-savvy editor of the multinational celeb gossip magazine SNAP, is pummeled in Paris and kidnapped in Kiev as the Huszars ramp up the race to oust their centuries-old rivals, the Kandeskys.

SNAP’s owners, the Kandesky family of vampires, built the world’s most popular celeb coverage empire but this isn’t just a business take-over. These powerful vampire families lived with an uneasy peace for four centuries until Maxie came in to boost SNAP’s coverage and started making inroads into the Huszar’s traditional hunting territories.

Although Jean-Louis, Maxie’s lover, vampire and second-in-command of the Kandeskys, tries to keep her safe, Maxie is determined to do things her way, a way that may lose her her job, her love and her life.

This is a new edition. It has been reformatted and contains additional bonus material.

Book Three, Plague: A Love Story

The third book of the Kandesky Vampire Chronicles begins the saga of the family’s start during the chaos of 14th century Hungary. When Stefan’s wife and infant son die in a minor plague outbreak, he has nothing to live for, so Theron’s turning him to a vampire is just a way out of his anguish.

Until he takes over the estate of a merchant, recruits Jean-Louis to teach him business and meets Lady Penelope Kandesky.
Plague returns to Budapest and this time paves the way for Stefan to become Baron Stefan Kandesky, a businessman who builds a trading empire with the help of Jean-Louis and Pen.

.

Book Four, DANUBE: A Tale of Murder

The Kandesky management trio, Stefan, Jean-Louis and Pen, find themselves embroiled in a war with their rivals, the Huszars, which is bad for PR and bad for business, but after a judicious assassination they hammer out a pact.

This fourth book of the Kandesky Vampire Chronicles tells of peace agreements with their rivals and the growth of their now-international business ventures.

It also follows Jean-Louis as he meets and falls in love with a young artist, Magda, who desires travel and adventure but never imagined the world the Kandeskys inhabit

Writing a series as a pantser

By the definition, a pantser is a writer who writes “by the seat of the pants”, someone who doesn’t outline and lightly plans a book.

I’m a panster, the one who in school wrote the paper first, THEN outlined what she’d written.

This allows me to create all kinds of scenarios, add characters along the way, set up action on the fly. And might become iffy as I find I’m writing series.

The one thing I’ve done with all of my series is to keep track of the characters! I list their names, occupations and which book they appeared, a must with the paranormal romance books which are littered with close to a hundred Central and Eastern European characters. Most of the time, I can’t even remember the spelling.

I have three series, the traditional mystery Amy Hobbes Newspaper Mysteries, the Stained Glass Mysteries and a paranormal romance one, The Kandesky Vampire Chronicles. There are three Amy Hobbes extant, Edited for Death, Labeled for Death and Delta for Death; two (so far) in the Stained Glass Mysteries and eleven in the Kandesky Vampire Chronicles. These are like Topsy, they just grewed

I planned ahead a bit in the mysteries and always intended  them to be a series. The main characters are the same, the actual plot changes with a different murder/mystery in each book. The planned-but-unwritten ones have a general mystery plot (who ends up dead and why) but nothing more.

The Kandeskys I initially saw as a trilology but as the characters developed, I had to keep establishing plots. Because the series are character-driven, a roadmap isn’t necessary. The characters can find themselves in the middle of a variety of situations which don’t have to be plotted out ahead of time. My only roadmap for this series is to continue the thread of the characters…they tell me what’s going to happen. My suspicion is that Lee Child didn’t sit down to write all the Jack Reacher books knowing he had a “roadmap” and Janet Evanovich keeps devising quirky situations for her characters. If you have a plot-driven book, although I’m hard pressed to come up with a series like that, some advance plotting might be necessary, but character-driven? No. Think Danial Silva, Robert Crais, Elizabeth George, Agatha Christie…etc. and ad infinitum.

The Amy Hobbes and Stained Glass Mysteries are complete in each book…well, I do have a couple of romances simmering. The Kandeskys on the other hand have loose ends and one GIANT cliff-hanger in book two, SNAP New Talent.

My initial publisher didn’t pick up the Amy Hobbes series so I don’t know if it would be different. I indie-publish for lots of reasons and this might be one of them. I like my characters (well, I love some of the guys) and would continue their story any way I can.

All of my books have some romantic tension. None of the female characters are particularly interested in getting married or even having a relationship, but as they meet a man in the course of their work, they become interested. The romantic tension in the Kandesky Chronicles kept the two main protags going for ten books. Now I need to figure out if Amy Hobbes (Amy Hobbes Mysteries) or Roz Duke (Stained Glass Mysteries) are  going to get totally wrapped up in their male characters.

All the characters grow and change, primarily in the way they understand themselves. In the mysteries, Amy is learning to cope with the hurt her ex-husband incurred when he left her for another woman. She’s rebuilding her life and her trust in men, but slowly. In the Stained Glass Mysteries, Roz’ husband has been murdered in a drive-by shooting. Although the gunman has been caught, Roz harbors a nagging question: Why was her husband at that mall where he was shot? In the Kandeskys, Maxie must make the decision of whether she’s willing to trade eternal life as a vampire for losing all she’s ever known. And the men, 500-year-old vampires all, must learn to love a 21st century career woman, a creature they’ve never met before.

During the writing of the series, the mysteries have shifted slightly. Amy Hobbes is the managing editor of a smaller daily newspaper in Northern California. The plots have changed as the focus of the economy has changed. Each of the books’ central plot centers around a real contemporary issue…but are they important enough to kill for? The Stained Glass Mysteries don’t rely on contemporary issues as much, although the first book, Stain on the Soul, hinges on pedophilia in the priesthood.

The Kandeskys have shifted quite a bit. Initially, the violence and tension was from a war with another vampire family. That family has died (or been killed) off and now the Kandeskys are up against international political issues. They’re living in Kyiv, Ukraine and are fighting off Eastern European thugs and gangs hired by the oligarchs. In SNAP: Pandemic Games, the danger is from Russia trying to break up the EU and NATO.

In a new book, I usually begin with the characters. What are they doing now? What challenges are they having? In the mysteries, this leads to a premise of “What if?” which leads to the plot, or mystery. In the Kandeskys, I usually begin with the events affecting global tensions because SNAP, the Kandesky family’s flagship company, is a multi-formatted international celebrity gossip television show and magazine. And they may be moving toward covering more news instead of gossip.

For me, one of the delights in pantsing, particularly a series, is the unknown. Although I almost always know the ending (not always the murderer), the plot can take interesting twists and the characters surprise me!

Coming in 2023, Resurrecting the Roses, Book Three in the Stained  Glass Mysteries.
