Kika the Upside-Down Girl

by Jessica Tudos

Kika the Upside Down Girl

My Review

In a world of normal, Kika dares to see it differently, much to the exasperation of her parents. They throw up their arms in frustration, urging Kika to be like the other kids.

The reason for this, Kika is an upside-down girl.  Whether reading a book hanging upside-down from a tree, or walking to school on her hands, Kika loves to be upside-down.

Sad that her parents are unhappy, Kika is filled with glee when she discovers a place where she can be herself. A place of flips and handstands, somersaults and swinging.

Now her parents throw up their hands in excitement and Kika’s upside down world is right side up.

The glossy, colorful pages are filled with wonderful illustrations of Kika’s escapades and the story has an important message.

Kids will be encouraged by Kika’s adventure, dare to dream and find their own place in the world.

An exhilarating story for children and parents. I’d encourage you to read this with your child and watch their eyes light up as they see themselves as Kika.

Is Bigfoot prowling around Reckless River , Washington ? Has Sasquatch come to the city?

Barbara Reed doesn’t know if she believes the legendary creature exists, but evidence is stacking up. Something big is scavenging for food in city parks. Something tall and heavy left footprints across a dirt parking lot. And something huge and hairy careened into her one night on the riverfront trail.

Did that same creature kill a man and drag his body into a swamp? Or was the killer human? Will justice be undermined by media frenzy, a tide of tourism, and hundreds of hunters?

With help from the usual suspects, Barb, her drug-cop boyfriend, her pearl-powered wealthy neighbor, and Cheese Puff, her less-than-loyal dog, set out to solve a mystery, catch a murderer, and bust a few myths along the way.

Mackenzie, Ava, Caitlin, Julie, and Parker have done some not-so-perfect things. Even though they all talked about killing rich bully Nolan Hotchkiss, they didn’t actually go through with it. It’s just a coincidence that Nolan died in exactly the way they planned . . . right? Except Nolan wasn’t the only one they fantasized about killing. Author Sara Shepard

GG SaraShepard

For as long as she can remember, Sara Shepard has been writing. However, when she was young she also wanted to be a soap opera star, a designer for LEGO, a filmmaker, a claymation artist, a geneticist, and a fashion magazine editor when she grew up. She and her sister have been creating joint artistic and written projects for years, except they’re pretty sure they’re the only ones who find them funny.

She got her MFA at Brooklyn College and now lives outside Philadelphia, PA with her husband and dogs. Her first adult novel is called The Visibles/ All The Things We Didn’t Say.
Sara’s bestselling young adult series, Pretty Little Liars, is loosely based on her experiences growing up on Philadelphia’s Main Line…although luckily she never had any serious stalkers. The series has also inspired the ABC Family television series of the same name.

Earlier in May I featured The Bleikovat Event by Hawk KacKinney.

For today I’ll be sharing the second book in this series, The Missing Planets.

I have the amazing cover and a cool excerpt.

And there’s a giveaway, so don’t forget to enter!

The Missing Planets

The Cairns of Sainctuarie

by Hawk MacKinney

Missing Planets cover

BLURB:

Planet Terato has become a member of the assembly of the Confederated League of Allied Star Systems. The Murian Outpost Terato once commanded by His Imperial Majesty’s Lord High Chamberlain Herklo Korvo XXXIV is now Teratoan staffed and under the command of Teratoan Eklam a’Qoc.

From the uncharted reaches between galaxies, attacks of extraordinary weaponry come against Terato and the Myr worlds of the Murians. Terminus Terato’s expanded link-portals and converter power modules are virtually useless. Power loss, defenses, communications and travel are totally disrupted. High Chamberlain Korvo’s unexpected return to Terminus on a mission for His Imperial Majesty leaves him stranded on Terato. Attacks grow more massive, more unpredictable; spread across the worlds of the League, as an isolated Terminus struggles among the shattered rubble and whispering remains of an ancient Polity of star-walkers.

Family and friends are lost, empires and civilizations in disarray, Terminus and Planet Terato almost defenseless. Desperate for answers, their worlds being overwhelmed by this remorseless aggressor, Eklam and Korvo reach across unexplored space in a despairing gamble and the last reserves of converter star-substrate, seeking one insignificant star system of gas giants and rocky inner planets for possible relics of the elusive Lantaraan Polity.

Excerpt

Ek never forgot the time Klara peeked over his shoulder; clutched his arm, “It was promised The Old Ones would return.”

“They don’t look like what I thought the Old Ones would look like,” he’d whispered to her. “Suppose they’re not the Old Ones. Where’d they come from? What are they?” Questions Ek had, with no idea there would be other times he’d ask the same kinds of questions—but with far more serious inferences.

The word spread. Many believed these off-worlders were the promised return of their ancients. As time passed, between chores and extra homework for his special classes there hadn’t been much chance to slip away; take the curved path to his overlook spot. Yet, when he did, boundless questions grew as Ek watched in the dusklit the off-worlders create what would become Outpost Terato.

His uncle was unbending, “Neither you nor Klara are to go anywhere near that abomination these off-worlders build out of the air,” his disapproval more severe with each passing dawnlit.

Some chit chat.

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Sun is shining, A light breeze to keep the humidity at bay. A perfect summer day!

After a week of clouds and rain, the sun finally shows itself again. Glorious day! I rushed outside to meet it, taking my computer, my phone, my Kindle, and a print book just in case. I spent many hours out their, reading, swimming in the pool, and just closing my eyes to listen to the seagulls. Man, I love summer! LOL

I also did a bit of writing.

writing photo: writing man writingman.gif

Writing, you ask?  Yep, I’ve been trying my hand at a few short stories that have been in my head for years. I don’t plan on trying to publish them.  But I do plan on sharing them on my blog. When I do, Ill be asking for feedback. Good or bad! I thought it would be a fun discussion post and I need more of those.

If you have any plots you’d like me to take on, a challenge of sorts, bring em on. It might take a while, but I’ll try to get to them. Should challenge me and it would be fun to see what I can come up with.

These will be very short stories and flash fiction to start. When I do my reviews, most times I write my own synopsis and that’s whet my appetite to try to do more. Scary!

And a lot of them are horror shorts. I do love my scares. I also learned real quick to not write them on my computer. You’ll see why in the gif below.

This was me fairly quickly. LOL I now use pen and paper to get a rough draft written first.

Call Me Grim

.

The truck should have turned Libbi Piper into a Libbi Pancake—and it would have, too, if Aaron hadn’t shown up and saved her life. The problem? Aaron’s the local Grim Reaper . . . and he only saved Libbi’s life because he needs someone to take over his job. Now, Libbi has two days to choose between dying like she was supposed to, or living a lonely life as Death Incarnate. Talk about a rock and a hard place. And the choice goes from hard to sucktastic when her best friend shows up marked: condemned as a future murderer. Libbi could have an extra week to stop the murder and fix the mark . . . but only if she accepts Aaron’s job as Reaper, trapping herself in her crappy town forever, invisible and inaudible to everyone except the newly dead. But, if she refuses? Her best friend is headed straight for Hell.

Taylor Dean’s newest book is now available!
.

GIRLOFMINE

I’ve read all of Taylor Dean’s books and love her stories. She’s a gifted author and writes from the heart.

That’s why I’m sure I’ll be needing a box of tissues when I start reading Girl Of Mine. Taylor has a way of making me smile through the tears.

Thanks for the laughter and the tears, Taylor. And congratulations on your new release!

Come on in and learn more about her newest release, Girl Of Mine!

******

.
The song that inspired me while writing GIRL OF MINE:
(Watch until the end. There’s a surprise!)
.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkkTMhZk-5Y]

A interesting tidbit about GIRL OF MINE:
My dad always worried about the cost of the electricity bill. If he walked past my bedroom and noticed that my light had been left on, he would turn it off and holler,
“That’s okay, Taylor, I got your light.”
It became a bit of a joke in our household. My siblings and I loved to try and catch my dad leaving on a light, just so we could say,
“That’s okay, Dad, I got your light.”
Now that I’m an adult with my own family, the term takes on new meaning.
The message behind it has worked its way into my new novel, Girl of Mine.
My father brought me into this world, he cared for me, and he taught me well. He gave me my “light,” my life.
He nourished my “light” and helped me become the person I am today.
So, Dad, thanks for getting my light.
I’ll always be grateful.
.

Taylor Dean lives in Texas and is the mother of four grown children. Upon finding herself with an empty nest, she began to write the stories that were always wandering around in her head, quickly finding she had a passion for writing, specifically romance. Whether it’s paranormal, contemporary, or suspense–you’ll find all sub-genres of clean romance in her line-up.

goodreads-badge-add-plus

My Review

Yep. Bubba gone and done it. He killed someone.

But wait, which Bubba done it. This is the south, you know. Everybody knows a Bubba. It’s such a common name, you run into them everywhere.

So which Bubba killed the most despised man in town?

Well, I can’t tell you that. I’d be spoiling this fun mystery for ya.

I can tell you that I didn’t have a clue until the very end. Well, I might have, but then the author had me following Baxley, pet-sitter, landscaper, and town Dreamwalker, going from one Bubba suspect to the next. Pretty soon, I was as confounded as she was.

When the dying man whispered, “Bubba done it,” it opened a big can of worms.

Baxley gets more and more into the murder investigation despite the sherriff’s warning to keep her nose out of it, painting herself as a target in the real world of Sinclair County, Georgia, and in the spiritual world where she dreamwalks.

Lots of angry spirits await Baxley when she dreamwalks, one in particular, who won’t let her speak to the dead banker and find out who killed him until she delivers a message.

To really make things even more dicey, one of the Bubba’s on the suspect list is Baxley’s brother-in-law.

Threats from an unknown source start coming at Baxley and it’s a race to find the killer Bubba before she ends up dead herself.

What a riot. I live in the south and can tell you first hand, there are A LOT of Bubba’s here. Everybody knows someone named Bubba.

The author had me in stitches over Baxley’s antics. She’s a true southern spitfire, but an amateur at sleuthing.

The dreamwalking was interesting and kind of creepy. I can’t imagine going that deep into a trance, entering a ghostly realm, all while your body sits there, still and vulnerable.

And I didn’t realize right away that this was the second book in a series. I had no problems reading this out of order. The author filled me in on some of the history of the characters and previous events without bogging down the reading. I am curious about why Baxley’s hair is now two-toned, and what happened to her husband. He’s supposed to have been KIA, but doubts rise up. Oh yeah, I also wonder who or what is Rose? Curiouser and curiouser.

There’s no graphic violence, no steamy romance, no foul language in this book. Just good, clean fun, colorful characters, and one heck of a mystery, or two, or….

I have to talk about the ending. I won’t spoil it for you. I will tell you that once the killer is named, it’s not over. Everything about this case is wrapped up, but Baxley isn’t out of the woods yet. Loved the ending.

5 Stars

Synopsis

Amateur sleuth and dreamwalker Baxley Powell is called in on a stabbing case. She arrives in time to hear the dying man whisper, “Bubba done it.”

Four men named Bubba in Sinclair County, Georgia, have close ties to the victim, including her goofball brother-in-law, Bubba Powell.

She dreamwalks for answers, but the victim can’t talk to her, leaving Baxley to sleuth among the living. The suspects include a down-on-his-luck fisherman, a crack-head evangelist, a politically- connected investor, and her brother-in-law, the former sweetheart of the victim’s ex-wife.

The more Baxley digs, the more the Bubbas start to unravel. Worse, her brother-in-law’s definitely more than friendly with the victim’s ex-wife.

Between pet-sitting, landscaping, and dreamwalking, Baxley’s got her hands full solving this case.

Some chit chat.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day weekend!

I’d like to thank all of the men and women in our military and their families for their service to our country and to us.

I’m having a marvelous weekend myself. My mother arrived at my house yesterday and a bunch of us got together and went to lunch. Then it was home to play Skip – Bo.

We are so addicted to that card game and our family is very competitive. Everybody hates to lose and the language can get very colorful. LOL

I moved to the Gulf Coast of Alabama over 29 years ago. My father had moved here. Then my brother did. Then I did. Then one of my sisters came down for vacation, went back to Michigan, packed up her stuff, and moved here. And then another of my sisters eventually moved here from California. I still have one brother and sister and my mother living in Michigan. My brother recently retired and visits often and may eventually move to the area. And I have a feeling when my sister retires, her and her husband may move to Texas as their daughter lives there.

So many of us now live in southern climes. It’s hard to live so far apart and now most of us live less than an hours drive apart. When my mother comes down for the summer it’s funny. We all want her to stay with us and we make sure we all get equal time with her at our homes. She’s my best friend. My comfort, support, and shopping buddy. And I believe she is an angel walking this planet. I’m am on Cloud Nine right now.

If I’m absent from here. If I don’t visit your posts and comment much, you’ll know my mother is at my house, and we are having fun!

Now. On to books! Got some good ones to share today!

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

Book Description:

Dragons, unicorns, fairies, zombies… and Santa.

At the center of it all stands Dee, a man immortalized in legend as Decompose. An ongoing war between unicorns and dragons has led to the creation of a plague… a deadly infection Dee is the host for. Not quite human, but not a unicorn either, Dee and the plague form a symbiotic relationship, resulting in immortality of the undead kind.

Every ruling Empire has desired control of Decompose. Controlling the infection means control of the people. An intervention of an old rival, Santa, results in Dee going missing. When he resurfaces decades later, Dee has one goal: locate the mythical cure to his plague.

However, complications of the heart force Dee to decide whether he truly wants to find the cure and give up being Decompose.

Excerpt

Jhon.

Dee focused on the name, pulling strength from it. Jhon contained the cure. Dee had to live so he could find Jhon. The cure was his way to correct all the wrongs he had done.

Dee ripped at the flesh surrounding him and clawed his way to the surface. The guts of the creature spilled out onto the ground, and he fell with them. He coughed, spitting out bodily fluids of the creature that had eaten him.

Jhon.

Dee rolled onto his side and threw up. The acidic stomach bile had left him temporarily disabled. His hearing returned before his vision and he heard voices near him.

“That?” A boyish voice asked. “That’s what you call a great and powerful present?”

“Trust me.” Another male voice said. “Throw the net on him and all your wishes will come true.”

“What is he, a genie?”

“You can treat him like one. He will be able to grant your every wish.” The older voice sounded familiar. Air rushed into Dee’s lungs, and his heart gave a painful beat. “Throw it over him now, before his strength returns.”

“Santa,” Dee managed to say. He gritted his newly mended teeth and gave a low growl. What did that man want now?

Dee’s vision returned in time for him to see a large, light- weight fishnet fall over his head and shoulders, covering his entire body. There was something claustrophobic about it. The more he struggled, the more of a mess he made of himself and the net.

“Stop moving around like that,” the boy said. Every muscle in Dee’s body stiffened. “Straighten the net out and get to your feet.” Dee moved as quickly as his wounded body would allow. His skin continued to burn from the acidic digestive juices still covering his flesh. The child before him didn’t look nearly as young as he’d expected. He was a teenager. And a dorky looking one at that, dressed in dark green pajamas with a cowlick on the back of his head.

“Santa, what is this?” Dee asked.

“Show me a trick,” the boy said. Dee obediently raised his hand and created a tennis ball sized orb of fire. It hovered in mid- air a few inches from his hand.

“He can do whatever you want,” Santa told the boy. “He is yours. No one will miss him. They all think he is dead.”

Dee put the fire out and lowered his hand. Fear rose through his healing body as he realized Santa was right. Dee had just crawled his way out of a dragon’s belly. Everyone who knew him thought a giant winged lizard had digested him. Even if someone searched for his remains, they would likely find nothing awry with his missing body.

“What is this?” he asked again.

“You’re my Christmas present,” the boy said.

Santa leaned in close to Dee. “The boy is clever, Dee. He caught me in a trap. You wouldn’t want all the children in the universe to miss the joy that Santa brings, would you? Of course, you wouldn’t. Therefore, I bartered with him. I gave him you in exchange for my freedom. You understand, don’t you?”

“You gave me to him as a present? I’m not an object to be owned.”

“Well, let’s be honest here, Dee. Most of your life has been spent in exactly that manner. At least this time your owner only wants you for your power, not your plague. Consider it a blessing—besides you’ll still have my visit to look forward to every Christmas Eve.”

My plague. Dee tried not to cringe at the reminder.

“Can you teleport him directly to the shower? He’s disgusting. My mother will throw a fit if he brings all that goop into the house.”

“Then you’ll take him?” Santa asked, as though Dee were a puppy for sale at the pet store.

“Yeah, he’ll do. Thank you, Santa.”

“I should have thought of this years ago,” Santa said.

“Santa, please,” Dee said. “I have to find Jhon before Emperor Emanuel does. He’s the only one who can cure the plague.”

“I’m sure Jhon will be fine without you, Dee.”
