RHINO HORN UNDERGROUND
by Deven Greene
August 10 – September 4, 2026 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

Struggling journalist Paige Remington leaves San Francisco for South Africa, determined to revive her failing career with a hard-hitting exposé on rhino poaching. Danger strikes almost immediately when poachers ambush Paige’s tour group. She survives only because she is rescued by Spencer, a man who claims to work for the FBI. He says he wants to save the rhinos and offers to help her with her story, but as he exposes her to a world she would never see on her own, she becomes embroiled in the brutal underworld of the rhino horn trade herself. Paige discovers that Spencer is not who he claims to be, and suspects he’s in the rhino poaching business himself. Caught between her ambition and her survival, Paige must decide whether to continue learning about the world of rhino poaching from Spencer and risk becoming the next casualty, or leave for home while she still can.

Chapter 1
With the hot sun blazing above, I strain my eyes as hard as I can to look downward, but the blade pressed against my throat remains out of sight. My pulse is racing, and my breathing is so fast I can only gasp. Is that a trickle of blood I sense slowly making its way down my neck, or is it my imagination? Below and to my right, a hand holds a well-worn machete handle. That hand is attached to the muscular forearm of the man standing behind me, ready to end my life any moment. I don’t know what he looks like—it all happened so quickly—but I know he’s a Black man with a thick African accent. He’s telling me to hold still. As if I would do anything other than that right now. I clutch the cell phone in my hand, wondering if I caught anything useful on the video I’d been shooting moments before. Is the camera still running? If my phone were found, the identity of the man holding me would be revealed to the authorities who were sure to investigate later—too late to save me. Our guide and four others on the tour of the wildlife reserve lie dead on the bare earth ten feet away, each in a pool of their own blood. As I take in the scene, a second Black man holding a rifle shoots the veterinarian who had been speaking to us. Now with a large hole in his chest, the veterinarian, armed only with a vial containing an animal tranquilizer, staggers and falls. I think of my husband, Quinn, thousands of miles away from this South African wildlife reserve—probably asleep, oblivious to the fact that he is about to become a widower. The two attackers yell back and forth. They seem to be having a disagreement, but I don’t understand their language. The man with the rifle raises it. I wince and brace myself for impact, but instead of aiming at me, he fires at the rhinoceros in a nearby pen. Blood and tissue—hide, bone, and brain, I suppose—spray from the back of the animal’s head. I watch in shock as the massive creature emits a haunting wail and falls. A fraction of a second later, another shot rings out, this one quieter. I freeze as the man standing behind me collapses. His machete nicks my arm before he hits the ground. A second shot is fired, and the man who just murdered the rhino falls. Who did that? Am I safe? I’m shaking as I slowly turn, just as Ethan, the only other surviving member of our group, grabs my arm and yells, “Let’s go!” With no time to think, I struggle to keep up as I let him drag me. I check my arm where the machete cut it—it’s only a superficial wound oozing a small amount of blood. Ethan tucks the large pistol he’s holding into his waistband while racing toward the dead rhino. My heart is already pounding when loud voices—African voices—approach from heavy brush close by. Ethan stops and appears to think for a moment, as my heart revs so hard I feel my chest will burst. After the brief pause, he pulls me along again, but in a different direction, now heading towards the body of the dead man who shot the rhino. He drops my hand to search the killer’s pants pockets, pulls out a set of keys, then snatches the rifle lying in the dust nearby. Motioning me to follow, he dashes to the small parking lot and jumps into the driver’s seat of an open, doorless jeep that wasn’t there when we arrived. I don’t know this man, but I scramble into the passenger side as fast as I can. Ethan guns the engine and heads out of the park. My mind is speeding as I struggle to fasten my seat belt, hoping I don’t fall out the side of the vehicle before I get it secured. Who is this guy I met this morning and know only as Ethan? All I know is what I can observe—he’s an average-looking middle-aged White man with a dark tan and thick black glasses, dressed in gray cargo pants. His belly is covered by a dull gray, loose-fitting, long-sleeve shirt with breast pockets and front snaps, hiding the paunch underneath. His gray bucket hat hides his hair, if he has any. He told our group his name as we left Richards Bay that morning for the two-hour drive to the wildlife reserve in the eastern part of South Africa, where we would see several rhinos and witness the horns being sawed off of one. While the other travelers and our guide were lively conversationalists as we traveled the dusty roads, Ethan remained silent, seemingly uninterested in the scenery. I had written off this milquetoast of a man as someone who was there only because he wanted to take pictures to show people back home, hoping to convince them that he was an interesting person. Now I’m wondering: Who carries a gun under his shirt when on vacation to view wildlife? And who would be able to fire it so accurately, so swiftly? I finally snap my seat belt and study him. He stares ahead as he removes a device from his shirt pocket and places it on the dash. “What’s that?” I ask. “GPS device.” Moments later, he veers off the main road. Small trees and bushes snap under the jeep. Not sure what to do, I ask, “What about those people? And the rhino?” Stupid, I know. “They’re all dead. No time to waste. More were getting close to us.” “More what?” “More poachers.” “How do you know?” I ask. He glances at me as if I’m an idiot. “I just know.” “Were you going to take the horns of that rhino?” I know it’s a crime, and I don’t want to sound accusatory, but I can’t imagine any other reason he would start to run toward the deceased animal. His face tightens and his eyes narrow. “What if I was?” Now I’ve gotten him mad. I need to change the subject. “Where are we going?” “I’m getting us to a safe place.” “I really appreciate what you’ve done, but wouldn’t it be best to head back to Richards Bay?” “It’s not safe. There’s more where they came from.” “How can you be so sure?” Ethan reaches into his right breast pocket and pulls out a leather case a little larger than a credit card. He throws it my way, and it lands on my lap. I gasp as I lift the front flap and see his identification. His name isn’t Ethan, but his picture is on the plastic ID. The man sitting next to me is Spencer Crenshaw, and he’s an FBI special agent. *** Excerpt from Rhino Horn Underground by Deven Greene. Copyright 2026 by Deven Greene. More Reflections from a North Woods Lake

Who Will Carry the Fire? More Reflections from a North Woods Lake by
Darrell J. Pedersen thoughtfully examines the value of human history,
traditions, memories, and relationships and reiterates the importance of
preserving and faithfully passing these along to the next generation. Through
a collection of essays and the retellings of his early days as a son, brother,
husband, and father, Pedersen shows readers that we all have been gifted these
irreplaceable stories by those who came before us. These remembered stories
will work to keep the thread of storytelling alive while passing down the
life-giving flames of laughter, human community, and hope to our children and
future generations. Using a blend of wisdom, humor, reflection, and life
stories in Minnesota, Pedersen expertly weaves a book that is both a
memoir/collection of essays and a celebration of life.

Five Young Men And Christmas 2020

A hairy arm, plaid flannel sleeve rolled up, extended out of the pickup window
and held high a fist with middle finger raised. A week before Christmas, at
the end of the tumultuous year 2020, I was headed for the dump. Driving where
four lane transitions to two, loud rumbling acceleration of an engine caught
my attention. There he is, up ahead of me in the right lane, a big pickup.
Speeding up, he slid in front of a small car. That’s when I spotted his
obscene gesture. What, I wondered, did that other driver do to earn that
reaction? Drawing close behind the little car, I spotted the offense. This
little old lady had made the mistake of sporting a small presidential campaign
sticker in her back window. I guessed giving her the finger was a victory for
him.

Witnessing this attack on humanity by a bearded young man in a big pickup
caused me to reflect on his place in our society and world. I thought about
the large number of bearded young men I had lately witnessed in televised
protests, a few packing assault rifles. Some, recently, shouted obscenities at
me and others for standing in silent support of Black Lives Matter. I
wondered, has this whole generation been lost? But then I recalled, my own son
is bearded and drives a noisy, old jeep, and he’s currently using his
vocational skills to put together a virtual Christmas Eve service for his
church.

That was Friday. Today, Monday, my wife and I pulled into a long line outside
Burger King. I immediately took notice of the young man ahead of us in the
row. He was driving an old pickup, paint peeling off and rusty jagged holes in
its fenders. Seeing him watching us in his mirror, I wondered if he was
another of these young ruffians.

Behind us, a brand new, red Jeep slipped into line. In my mirror I saw another
young man driving. I noted huge tires, winch, fancy mirrors, decals, all the
options. Lots of money for that one, I thought. I wonder what kind of a job he
has? I never had money to buy something like that when I was his age. I
don’t have money to buy something like that even at age 68.

A long wait; we were one car back now. The young driver in the rusty pickup
carried on an extended conversation with the window person whose hand held the
outstretched plastic tub awaiting payment. Is he hassling that poor cashier?
Finally, he put his credit card in the tub, received his food, and drove away.
Our turn. The twenty-something man in the window, masked, said, “Your
meal has already been paid for. The fellow ahead of you took care of your
bill.”

“What?”

He repeated. Bill paid. Young man in the pickup truck. $17.84.

“Well, can I pay for the people behind me?”

“Yes, if you want to.”

“Yes, please, let me pay for their bill.” His bill. I remembered;
it was the young fellow in the expensive Jeep. I handed the cashier my credit
card and he rang it up.

“How much was it?”

“Just over three bucks.”

“Well, can I pay for the next car too?”

“Sure.”

“How much is that one?”

“That one is $24.95.”

“Okay, thanks, that will be just fine.”

Bill paid. Food delivered. Credit card returned. Ready to coast away, I looked
my young fellow in the eye and offered, “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas and God bless you,” he replied.

“And God bless you too,” I said to one of my new young friends at
Burger King.

Five young men just before Christmas in 2020. Pandemic, political strife,
racism. So much trouble all around. Five young men and an old guy. Maybe
there’s still hope.

The Tale Of The Prince And The Spider

By Sasha Hopkins

,

.

Genre: Children’s Book

Synopsis

Prince Alexander is a boy filled with courage, laughter, and light, until a chance encounter with a mysterious new “friend” changes everything. Trapped in a web of fear and silence, he must find the strength to fight back against a dark trickster who wants to steal his voice, his joy, and his future.

The Tale of the Prince and the Spider is a modern fairytale for children, parents, and anyone who has faced fear in silence. Told with warmth, honesty, and hope, it reveals how secrets can poison, how love protects, and how even the smallest voice can grow into a roar.

Through Alexander’s journey, readers discover that pain does not define us—courage does. His story is both a thrilling adventure and a gentle reminder that you are stronger than your fears, your voice matters, and you are never alone.

This is more than a tale of princes and monsters. It is a story for every family who longs for healing, resilience, and light in dark times. Beautifully written to spark conversations between children and adults, it invites readers to talk openly about bravery, truth, and the power of standing tall.

Enjoy this peek inside:

One sunny morning, Alexander started an adventure. The sun shone bright like a golden bell, lighting up hills covered in green grass, and wildflowers—yellow, purple, red—spread out like a painter’s canvas. The wind carried scents of dirt and sweet clover, tickling his nose as he rode Menace, his brown horse, whose fur coat gleamed like a soldier’s sword. Menace’s hooves thumped the dirt road, kicking up dust that sparkled. Alexander held the reins tight, feeling them rub his hands, the breeze messing up his hair as his saddle creaked along with the swaying trees above.

Bushes shook—a rabbit darted past; a hawk’s shadow soared overhead. The road stretched on, but where trees grew thick, shadows moved, hinting at a forest full of secrets. Menace huffed, ears twitching, and Alexander patted his warm, scratchy neck. “Keep going, boy,” he said quietly, his heart beating with excitement.

Through the kingdom he went, past roads busy with familiar smiling people who stopped to cheer, their voices lifting him up. But farther out, it got quiet, the land wide and free. With a lion’s bravery, a fire’s strength, and a heart full of love, he rode into the unknown.

.

About Author Sasha Hopkins

Sasha Hopkins is a father of five and a storyteller from Melbourne, Australia. His journey has been shaped by both love and hardship. As a child, Sasha endured trauma that left deep scars, yet he chose not to remain silent or let those experiences define him. Instead, he transformed his pain into a story of courage, resilience, and hope.

He wrote The Tale of the Prince and the Spider during a period of recovery in Western Australia, creating it as a gift for his children, Winter, Hunter, Hudson, Navy, and Orion. What began as a father’s offering of love became a timeless fairytale for families everywhere: a reminder that even in life’s darkest moments, light can be found, voices can be heard, and healing is always possible.

Through his writing, Sasha shares a powerful message: your past does not diminish you, and speaking out is an act of bravery that can inspire others. When he isn’t writing, Sasha is adventuring with his kids, encouraging them to embrace adventure, laughter, and the strength within themselves.

Elliah ~ 1

My mother told me many times that all adolescents feel like
they don’t belong, but… I really didn’t. So I spent my free time away from
other elves, on my own but for the animals… they didn’t understand how broken I
was. And I was quite pleased with my current find, so I snarled when a noise
behind me scared away the drakeling that had settled in my hands. Black with a
pattern of red scales along its spine, its body the thickness of my finger, it
took flight with a flurry of thin leathery wings and disappeared behind a
massive brown trunk.

“The real ones are much more intimidating,” said
an unfamiliar voice.

Time slowed as I tensed to run, shocked that I’d let my
guard down so much that anyone had gotten that close. How many lurked behind
me? On the outskirts of town, in the thick of the woods near the river, I had
expected solitude.

“Stay, Bereft. I am not afraid,” said the voice.
His words provoked me.

“No one’s afraid of me,” I
blurted. Bitterness stained my words as surely as the pollen of the bloodcups
had stained my ragged clothes.

I turned away from the vanished drakeling to focus on the
intruder who’d scared it away. A man. No, I corrected myself, someone
my age
. Someone not quite old enough for adults to consider one of their
own, but too old to call a child.

But not Bereft. No other elf shared that with me.

The newcomer was slightly taller than me with a thin frame,
his light hair hanging long, wild, and tangled. He was new to the village—I
would have noticed an elf with skin so light. I’d heard whispers of him at
school. Kethryllia had called him Salt-kissed, and I’d wondered what that
meant, but his light skin answered that question. He’d undoubtedly caught
whispers about me, heard of my… condition. Bereft. Yet at that moment, I
thought only of the hours of coaxing I’d spent to draw the little drakeling
into my grasp, and that the stupid elf had scared it away. I wanted to punch
him.

“Maybe they should be,” he said, taking a step
back, though it would have taken me two leaps to get to him, and he’d have me
pinned in one, if he had any skill with magic at all. But I’d prepared a leap
already, only not in his direction. As I sprung away, he continued, raising his
voice, “And you’re right, they’re not afraid of you.”

I landed with a tree between us. His magic wouldn’t be able
to snag me there. Unless he was very good at it.

“They’re afraid of what you represent.”

Prologue

Corpses patterned the ground as far as my eye could see, a
patchwork quilt of death.

I stood atop a skeletal tower, overlooking the broken ruins
of an ancient civilization, so very far from home. I envisioned the beauty that
the soaring arches once held, the bridges between the constructs reaching out
with broken arms, buildings leaning against one another like ancient lovers in
a final embrace. Crumbled remains powdered the bases of former statues, and,
everywhere, all of it was littered with the dead.

Like a phoenix, I stood, bathed in fire. An Angel of Death.
Not the Angel of Death—he was an ass.

A part of me wanted to go down and see for myself. Maybe
just to make sure… to make sure I had done my job… and killed everyone that
used to inhabit that world. The magic I was wielding should have destroyed them
all—something inside of me could feel that it had—but I wanted
to see it.

Yet I knew that was unrealistic. I didn’t have the time.
There were other worlds that needed my infection, and Earth was on my
shortlist.

Chapter 1

Red – Day 20, Sunday, the day after the attack

“Ms. Hernandez?” a muffled voice called from a
distance, accompanied by a gentle rapping on a door. My consciousness
registered the interruption as a nuisance and pulled me back under.

What seemed like seconds later, the rapping came again, more
insistent. “Ms. Hernandez.”

Ms. Hernandez was my mom… why were they bothering me?

Then a scraping sound, and an alarmed voice. “Ms.
Hernandez! Are you okay?”

Some scrambling, some grunts, more scraping… shit, I was
going to have to wake up. Why couldn’t they just let me sleep?

I tried to answer, but my throat was dry and nothing came
out. Coughing, I attempted to sit up, not wholly returned from my trip to
dreamland. “I’m here. I’m okay.” Was I though? I wasn’t sure.

I was in my flat. Not the desert. My door was partway open,
and a slightly overweight man had paused in the act of pushing his way in. I
recognized him, but his name escaped me. Swinging my legs off my cot, I did a
quick modesty check. I was fully dressed, though rather tragically, in some
semblance of civilian fatigues—muddied, disheveled, and a little bloody.

The reason came screaming back to me. There had been
creatures, unearthly monsters, in The Palace. They’d done things I
could not explain by any of the rules I knew. And they’d beaten the hell out of
me and then patched me back up in a matter of seconds. I’d blown the head clean
off of one of them and fled the scene.

Not my smartest move.

What are some of your pet peeves?

Stories in which a conflict could be solved immediately if two reasonable characters had a thirty-second conversation. People certainly avoid difficult conversations in real life, but I need to understand why. I’m also bothered when a fantasy world introduces rules only to discard them whenever the plot needs an easy escape.

If you knew you’d die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

With my wife and daughters. There would probably be good food, a great deal of talking, some laughter, and no attempt to accomplish anything impressive. I suspect the things that feel urgent now would become very unimportant very quickly.

What kind of world ruler would you be?

A reluctant one who immediately began designing systems that would make the position unnecessary. Anyone eager to rule the world should probably be disqualified.

What are you passionate about these days?

Storytelling, particularly the changing ways authors can find and connect with readers. Writing the book is still the heart of the work, but publishing now involves audio, video, newsletters, direct sales, social media, advertising, and technologies that did not exist when I first dreamed of becoming an author. It can be exhausting, but it is also fascinating.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I exercise, ride my bike, lift weights, spend time with my family, read, and watch movies or television. Little construction projects are often (but not always) relaxing: building a shelf, adding wall moulding, fixing a garbage disposal. I also work on creative projects that are technically related to writing but feel different enough to give another part of my brain a turn.

Which of your novels can you imagine being made into a movie?

All authors probably imagine their books on a screen, but The Guardian of the Palace is especially cinematic. It combines modern Manhattan, hidden magic, interdimensional threats, dwarven technology, monsters, and a former soldier forced into a conflict much larger than she understands. I can easily picture its action sequences, particularly the moment the ordinary world begins to break open around the characters.

It’s cozy. It’s culinary. It’s Mardi Gras madness! It’s the fifth book in this fabulous mystery series with a vintage flair from USA Today-bestselling and Agatha Award–winning author Ellen Byron.

Step 1: join a killer krewe

It’s carnival season in New Orleans, and Ricki James-Diaz and her friends from Bon Vee are dressing up for Mardi Gras. They’ve joined the notorious krewe of Chew to support Ricki’s chef boyfriend, Virgil, who is to be crowned this year’s king. It’s all fun, throws, and over-the-top outfits until the krewe’s captain is found strangled with his own medallion.

Step 2: survive the festivities

The prime suspect is Ricki’s friend, the deceased’s wife who discovered he was cheating on her. It seems a straightforward case, but Ricki isn’t so sure. The krewe’s leader had many enemies including his mistress, his krewe co-founder who he ousted, and his college friend whose girlfriend he stole. One thing’s clear, Ricki’s at the center of yet another murder investigation. And if she’s not careful, her first Mardi Gras could also be her last . . .

Perfect for fans of Joanne Fluke, these delightful mysteries bring New Orleans to life with fun characters and delicious recipes. This series is a must-read for culinary cozy lovers!

Torment Becomes Them

By Warwick Gleeson

(The American Oz Maker, #1)
Publication date: May 6th 2026
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Historical, Science Fiction

The War for Utopia Begins

Inspired by a mad vision of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, a centuries-old time war is being fought to determine the destiny of the human race. As the conflict rages between the early 18th century and the battlefields of World War I, Czarina Sorceress Catherine Romanova joins forces with her younger self, Princess Von Anhalt, magician Zolo Bold, and World Maker Niccolo Paganini, to face a gamut of powerful and implacable foes. The most dangerous and ruthlessly brilliant of them all, the immortal E. G. Godfellow–once known to ancient Greece as the “Scourge of the Gods”–intends to stop Catherine and her allies from rewriting the history of the 20th century.

Their bold plan, to prevent the 80 million deaths of WW II and inaugurate a new utopian vision for humankind in the 21st century, interferes with Godfellow’s plan to maintain the status quo and thereby usher in his own utopian vision of “One Earth—One Master.” Only one vision will dominate, and either way, the cost will be terrible.

Enjoy this peek inside:

AS SHE KNELT AT THE CATHEDRAL ALTAR in the year 1762 for her royal coronation as Czarina of All the Russias, Catherine Romanova felt like starting a new war. She’d already endured two hours of a five-hour ceremony while wearing twenty pounds of silk and nine pounds of Imperial Crown; and to increase the burden even further, the droning excess of pomp and boredom had drained her of patience, not to mention goodness.

Wishing to distract herself from the seemingly endless prattle of the Russian Orthodox Patriarch as he recited Old Testament scripture, as well as the oven of suffocating heat created by a hoop dress big enough to hide twenty dwarves, Catherine lifted the curtain on theater. She replayed to herself Earth’s most important war to date—the ultimate conflict to define the fate of human nature itself. Her old violin-playing mentor, Niccolo Paganini, had dubbed it “The Utopia War.”

While the aged Patriarch stumbled over a droll reading of Malachi, her musing inevitably took her back to the time just before the war, to another world at age fifteen when she lived in the Castle Bärenthoren and had been known to all of Europe as the famous and unruly Princess Fredericke von Anhalt (aka “Freddie”)—the name born by her proudly until her terribly boring coronation now underway.

Dear God, help me survive this day. My destiny is Catherine, but my soul is Fredericke.

Even though her every breath and eye blink was being carefully watched and measured by the gaseous Moscow nobles who filled the pews of Assumption Cathedral, her first memory began with a sound. A barely audible titter, like distant footsteps on decayed leaves. She’d considered the scraping sound of a mouse to be the origin, or some other invading creature, for every now and then a cat bird or a dove flew into the study and fell to the floor, finally tiring itself out with fearful flutters.

So truly, it could have been any number of things.

Nonetheless, Freddie vowed to ignore the disturbance and return to her prior task: recreating the Greek mathematics of Eratosthenes to determine Earth’s circumference while imagining herself the gallant Sir Francis Drake sailing the Azores in search of Spanish gold.

Putting quill to paper, she sketched the hull of Drake’s ship, The Golden Hind, before jotting down a few notes on the logic of Eratosthenes, and just as she measured the miles between the two cities in his equation, Syene and Alexandria, the strange tittering repeated. But louder this time. Enough to make her hand slip, the point of quill jaggedly defacing her work.

What in Beelzebub’s name? she asked herself.

The disturbance had become too curious to allow any further progress on the circumference of Earth, and though Freddie hated breaking personal vows, she rose from her writing desk, determined to learn the truth.

Paint store owner Laura Meehan must prove her amateur sleuthing skills (again!) when her small town’s public library starts burning in this installment of the Haunted Paint Store cozy mystery series.

Don’t mess with a paint store owner’s safe haven!

Laura Meehan has her hands full with her paint store, but also with another case (that she will definitely leave to the police to solve)! The Sea Breeze Public Library is burning and it’s clear from the beginning that it must be arson.

Who would want to burn a library down and why? Was it a group of moms protesting what they see as inappropriate book content? Maybe it was someone who didn’t like a title they lent? Or is there something more alarming going on?

As a library volunteer, Laura simply has to find out, and together with her IT-savvy husband Roy and her ex-detective father’s ghost (real or imagined still yet to be determined), she stumbles upon a lot of obstacles on her quest to find the truth—and maybe even an arsonist who might strike again!

A light-hearted cozy mystery with a paranormal twist and Copperman’s signature wit, humor, and zaniness. Perfect for fans of Copperman’s Haunted Guesthouse Mysteries and Cleo Coyle’s Haunted Bookshop Mysteries, as well as funny and cozy mysteries by Janet Evanovich, Elle Cosimano, and Amanda Flower.

Secrets of the Cryptids

Cowboys and Cryptids Book 1

by Sharon Buchbinder

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Romantasy

She never belonged to
the pack—until fate led her to him
.

Cybersecurity expert Hayil Rufus Rose has spent her life hiding one impossible
truth: she’s a werewolf who has never shifted, a failure by her pack’s rules
and a woman on the brink of exile. A solo hike in Glacier National Park is
meant to clear her head—but instead, a chance meeting with Will Penn, a guarded
federal agent with powerful instincts and secrets of his own, changes
everything.

As Hayil becomes entangled in a missing persons case involving Will’s brother,
she uncovers corruption, cartel money laundering, and violence threatening the
Blackfeet Nation. She forms an unexpected bond with a Bigfoot family, who are
not monsters, but an ancient people who recognize her latent power. Through
trauma, loyalty, and near‑fatal danger, Hayil finally undergoes her full
transformation, claiming her identity at last.

Secrets of the Cryptids launches a thrilling paranormal romance
series about found family, fierce hearts, and the courage it takes to become
who you were always meant to be.

.
.

Hayil had the advantage of
excellent night vision—super vision compared to other humans. Plus, she
possessed an almost uncanny ability to connect with most wild and domestic
animals. Hayil mentally grimaced. She could also thank her grandmother
for her long overdue ability to shift. What would it take to trigger her body
into the lupine version of herself? Was it like a growth spurt that hadn’t hit
her body yet? Or was Hayil destined to remain the one person in her pack who
wasn’t able to wolf out?

Once again, her mother’s
constant refrain came back to her: “You’re a late bloomer, like your
grandmother. She was older than you when she shifted. All in good time.
You’ll see.”

Sure, Mom.

Hayil knew her mother
wanted the best for her, but found her cheerfulness a bit forced. Beneath her
mother’s optimism, Hayil sensed an undercurrent of concern about her
thirty-year-old daughter’s ability to integrate into the red wolf clan. This
missing piece of Hayil’s identity called to her like a siren’s song, demanding
she complete herself. Would she ever be a true part of the pack? Or
would she forever be the unmated one? What then? She was an anomaly, something
the pack didn’t tolerate well. Tradition dictated that if a pack member didn’t
shift by the end of their third decade, they were banished.

A chilling thought struck
Hayil mid-stride.

If I don’t
shift this year, will they force me out of the pack?

They were the only family
she’d ever known. Her mother would fight for her to stay and would probably
win. But at what cost?

Hayil would be an outcast.
She’d never be invited to pack meetings, deliberations or celebrations. Those
were reserved for shifters. If she married a non-shifter, the pack would drive
her out, of that she was sure. What if her offspring were able to shift? Would
that make things better? Would the pack let her stay then? It wasn’t as if she
could go to a genetic counselor and ask for a DNA test for werewolves.

The thought of losing her
extended family through no fault of her own made her gulp back tears. Angry at
herself for allowing her thoughts to go down that dark rabbit hole, Hayil
reminded herself she was a scientist. Review the facts, not the fears.

Fact one: Grandma had been
in labor with Hayil’s mother when she’d shifted for the first time.

Fact two: The majority of
the pack members had shifted when they’d hit puberty.

Fact three: Hormones! It
had to be related to hormones! The rush of hormones at puberty and the flood of
pregnancy hormones had to be related somehow.

Hayil was long past puberty
and the associated mood swings and acne, thank you very much. She was not ready
to be pregnant. For starters, she would need a romantic partner in her life.
She’d had zero luck on that score so far.

“I still have time. It’s
not too late. I won’t give up hope.”

Shaking her head to clear
her mind, Hayil double-checked her wild animal deterrents. All in place.
Then she tugged her knit cap down over her ears and pulled her hands-free
headlamp into place. She zipped her fleece jacket against the breeze and
adjusted her twenty-five-pound backpack. With an altitude gain of almost
nineteen hundred feet, she planned to take her time, pacing herself for the
strenuous four-hour hike. She grasped her lightweight hiking poles and took a
last look up at the stars. Time to see that spectacular view at the top.

As promised by the trail
blog, the dirt path was well maintained. The morning air was cold and crisp,
layered with the woodsy scent of damp earth and pine needles. An owl hooted,
and Hayil spotted movement in the brush between the thick pines beside the trail.
Her headlamp reflected in the eyes of small critters, all of whom skittered
deeper into the woods.

For three hours, all she
heard was the crunch of her hiking boots on dirt and gravel, the rasp of her
own breaths, the glug of water when she drank and the jingle of her bear bells.
She looked at yet another incline on the trail and decided she needed a hiking
song for inspiration.

“Country roads, take me
home,” she sang, belting out “Mountain Mama”—and something crashed through the
bushes ahead on the trail. Something large.

She froze.

An enormous black bear
stood on its hind legs at the top of the hill.

Shit,
shit, shit. If only I could shift, shift, shift!

The animal had its back to
her, but if it got her scent, it could turn and charge at her in a flash.

Heart pounding like a
jackhammer, she placed her hand on the bear spray.

A breeze sprang up, making
her eyes water with its intensity. The good news was that it meant she was
downwind of the bear. The bad news was that the air smelled like a wet dog had
rolled in a dead animal. The worst news was that the bear turned and looked
right at her.

Omigod.
It’s not a bear. What the heck is it?

Bigfoot and Me

By Sharon Buchbinder

I’m a Janie-Come-Lately to the Bigfoot Believer Tribe—which may surprise people who know my fascination with anything that refuses to fit neatly into science’s square boxes. Bigfoot Believers draw on evidence from researchers, scientists, and Bigfoot Experiencers—people who have actually had firsthand encounters. Some believe Sasquatch is an undiscovered bipedal hominid; many Native American cultures consider Bigfoot an ancient tribe that retreated when White settlers arrived on Turtle Island. Others see Bigfoot as a supernatural or paranormal entity, possibly connected to UFOs or UAPs.

Despite my scientific training—psychology (BA), neuroscience (MA), nursing (AAS), and public health (PhD)—I’ve never seen a UFO or a Bigfoot. But I am no stranger to the paranormal.

Paranormal events have threaded through my life since childhood. Merriam-Webster defines paranormal as “not scientifically explainable,” and I’ve always accepted that alternate reality. Whether or not others believe in these phenomena has never mattered to my own experiences: dreams that come true, thinking of someone moments before they call, knowing my sister was pregnant before she did, or hearing a ghost in my college duplex.

In the 1970s, while studying psychology at the University of Connecticut, I participated in telepathy experiments using the now-famous J.B. Rhine Zener cards. My “hit rate” as a receiver was, as the study noted, “statistically greater than chance occurrence.”

Only later did I learn about the CIA’s psychic spy programs, remote viewing research, and the MK ULTRA behavioral modification project. I now suspect those college experiments may have doubled as a quiet recruitment tool for psychic talent. A large scientific evaluation later found that remote viewing results were statistically positive—though “not detailed enough for practical uses in the field.” The military continued the work for a time before officially shutting down their psychic soldier units.

Fast-forward to today: the U.S. government has begun releasing decades of UFO/UAP documents. It makes you wonder—will Bigfoot be another revelation waiting in the wings? After all, in 1976, David Byrne sent a hair sample to the FBI and didn’t hear back for forty years, only to be told it was “deer hair.” Forty years? The mail isn’t that slow.

Scientists, trained observers, and everyday people have been searching for Bigfoot for decades. The holy grail, of course, is physical evidence. Researchers like Jeff Meldrum, PhD—an expert in primate foot morphology and locomotion—have dedicated their careers to the subject. The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) maintains a massive database of “credible sightings and related reports,” searchable by state and county. Scott Tompkins’ Bigfoot Mapping Project uses crowdsourcing and GIS technology to visualize sightings. Even Dr. Jane Goodall, the Queen of Primatology, refused to rule out Bigfoot’s existence.

My new release, Secrets of the Cryptids, plays with this tension between skepticism and belief. Hayil, my werewolf protagonist who has never shifted, pushes back against her best friend Ashley’s Bigfoot enthusiasm:

“Isn’t this enthusiasm for cryptozoology a little…I don’t know”—Hayil wiggled her fingers—“woo-woo?”

Ashley, of course, disagrees. “This area isn’t just Big Sky Country, it’s Bigfoot territory. You saw and smelled a Sasquatch. That’s the kind of experience people would give their eyeteeth to have.”

Hayil’s dog chimes in with a nuzzle, as if to say, Are you hearing this?

Ashley continues her science-based defense: “Every year, new species of flora and fauna come to light… Last year, a sinkhole in China revealed a new underground ecosystem with an ancient underground forest. We may never know what lives at the bottom of the deepest trenches in the ocean. It’s science, not superstition.”

While I may be a latecomer to the Bigfoot Believer Community, I’m in good company. And who knows? Somewhere in the Montana wilderness, Bigfoot might be enjoying a bumper crop of huckleberries.

A Maryland-based author with a background in healthcare and

Pismo Beach Sniper

A Thad Hanlon/ Bri de la Guerra Mystery Book 3

by Topper Jones

Genre: Private Investigator Mystery

When sniper fire erupts at the Central Coast Surf Trials at
Pismo Beach, private investigator Thad Hanlon is thrust into every parent’s
worst nightmare. His eleven-year-old son and two teammates are shot while
surfing—one critically injured—plunging the contest into chaos and terrorizing
the tight-knit Five Cities beach community.

The shooter disappears, torching his hideout, leaving only questions in his
wake. Random attack—or the first move in a deadly game? Why target young
surfers? And is the marksman finished…or just getting started?

Urged by desperate parents, Hanlon and his sharp-witted partner, Bri de la
Guerra, race to protect the kids as they train for the upcoming West Coast
Championships. But as the detective duo close in on the sniper, they uncover a
chilling truth: the surf team isn’t his ultimate target—and the nightmare is
far from over.

This gripping thriller will keep you turning pages late into the night.

What Critics Are Saying

“Engaging characters, wit, and suspense elevate this rip-curling
page-turner.”

— Kirkus Reviews

“Pismo Beach Sniper is a tense and fast-moving mystery
with real emotional stakes. The target audience is readers who enjoy mystery,
private investigator fiction, crime thrillers, action suspense, coastal noir,
and family-driven detective series. Readers who like Robert Crais’s Elvis Cole
and Joe Pike novels may appreciate the same mix of banter, loyalty, and
wounded-hearted heroism, though Jones swaps Los Angeles grit for Central Coast
surf and spiritual undertow.”

— Literary Titan

“It felt like I was reading something akin to James Patterson: fast,
frighteningly imaginative, and furious with action. Pismo Beach
Sniper is a deftly plotted story of a man doing everything to keep his
child safe in a world where not only waves can kill.”

Chapter 1

I was sitting under a beach canopy in the spectator
section of the California Central Coast Surf Trials, watching the first heat of
the semifinals, when I heard the sonic crack of a large firearm. Something
long-range like the scoped high-precision rifle my business partner, Bri, uses
to qualify at the Five Cities Shoot’n Center.

“What was that?” my son’s surf coach asked. Gev Burian
was sitting on my left. “Sounded like it came from behind us.”

Bri de la Guerra, on my right, stood to check things
out. “Cityside, yeah. I’m thinking .30 cal. Maybe three-oh-eight.”

I swiveled to scan the low-rise buildings of downtown
Pismo—the seafood cafes, souvenir shops, and beach rentals. Clumps of tourists
meandering down narrow Pomeroy Avenue stopped. Some gazed skyward, herd-like,
examining the highest roofline—the old Hotel Pier Vista. Others rushed indoors.

When a second blast didn’t happen soon after, I saw
pedestrians raise their palms in the classic “what’s up” shrug before
continuing their weekend saunter. Some, trailing well-groomed dogs on leashes,
took refuge in their smartphones.

I turned to face the Pacific as Bri sat in her folding
chair. Coach Gev got out his binocs and we rejoined the hundreds of other
parents, friends, and supporters along the beach to watch the tournament.

Three junior surfers, ages eleven to twelve—”grommets”
in surf jargon—were perched on their boards 100 yards offshore in the chilly
morning waters north of Pismo Pier. The contestants wore different colored
jerseys over their wetsuits. Red jersey had priority takeoff; the next wave was
his. As the kids waited for the sets to roll in, they bobbed in the mushy surf
like sitting ducks.

“Yellow’s down!” Coach Gev shouted. He handed me his
binoculars. “The kid’s slumped sideways off his board.”

“Cramp, maybe?” I pressed the field glasses to the
bridge of my nose, fiddling with the adjustments. “January water temps are
cold, fifty-three, fifty-four degrees. These temps? He should have worn a 5/4/3
mm instead. Maybe even a—”

There was a second sonic crack. I watched Yellow’s board
splinter into pieces. Chunks of the foam core ringed the downed contestant as
he struggled to keep his head above water.

Red jersey, closest to Yellow, dropped prone and paddled
with fury toward him. Just as he was about to grab Yellow’s arm, I heard shot
three. There was a splash near the tail of Red’s board.

Red turned turtle, flipping his tri-fin surfboard over
so the bottom faced the sky. Only his hands, gripping the sides of the
shortboard, were exposed.

Shot four took out Red’s middle fin. Shots five and six
took out the two outer fins. Red let go of his board and sank out of view.

That left the eleven-year-old in the light blue jersey
as the only contender sitting on the water. My son, Zael, was in full
competition mode, hyper-focused on The One Thing—a wave with his name on it. A
wave built by the sea gods just for him, for his performance, his tricks, the
ones he’d stick. The 10-rating he’d be awarded by all three judges. That
perfect ten.

Zael was in the zone, tunnel vision his ally. Chaos
bending to will. He had no clue what had happened to Red and Yellow.

I popped out of my beach chair, sprinted from our shade
canopy to the shoreline, and screamed as I waded in. “Duck and cover, Zael! Get
down! Now!” I waved my arms, zigzagging through the shallows.

My son wasn’t hearing me, wasn’t seeing me, wasn’t even
attuned to my panic despite his gift for sensing things unspoken. Zael paddled
hard for takeoff, slid into the three-foot wave breaking off the pier, and
dropped into the curl. He drove down the line, pumping his board to build
speed, then bottom turned, and angled toward the lip to launch into his
signature 360-degree air rotation and—

Blam.

Shot seven.

Zael’s right leg buckled. He lost balance and angled
into a dive as far away from his board as his leash would let him. When he didn’t
come up for air…

Are your characters based on real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Mostly the latter. One of the two primary protagonists in PISMO BEACH SNIPER, Bri de la Guerra, is pure fiction. The other primary protagonist, Thad Hanlon, while also make-believe, was inspired by my nephew, who has competed internationally in surfing like Thad. But that’s where the similarity ends. Unlike Thad, who washed out of the pros, my nephew still competes. And my nephew’s a firefighter, not a private eye.

The ocean feels almost like a character in PISMO BEACH SNIPER. What role does the California Central Coast play in shaping the story’s mood?

The Pacific Ocean is a moody presence. At times, she provides solace from the daily grind. A chance to take a dip, cool off, and catch a few waves. And at other times, when big weather rolls in and the swells kick up, she can be a cruel monster, lashing out with rip tides and pounding surf. In Thad Hanlon’s world, the ocean is simultaneously a source of comfort, danger, and wisdom. When life becomes complicated, he paddles out beyond the break. The rhythm of the waves helps him untangle the Gordian knot of mysteries he’s facing and decide what to do next. In that sense, the Pacific isn’t just a setting—it’s a trusted companion in the story.

The novel blends PI procedural, action suspense, family drama, and coastal noir. How do you balance those elements while keeping the story moving?

By ensuring tension in every scene. That’s the secret to keeping the story moving when you’re juggling multiple elements.

For each scene, I work from a cinematic framework inspired by Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat!® approach to screenwriting. I start with a simple structure: where the scene takes place, what is happening, and—most importantly—the emotional arc of the point-of-view character.

From there, I focus on what really drives momentum: the conflict. Who wants what, what stands in their way, and what’s at stake if they fail. If I can clearly define Hero—Goal—Obstacles—Stakes, the tension takes care of itself, and the story keeps moving.

Thad’s fear for Zael gives the mystery a strong emotional charge. How did you approach writing him as both a father and an investigator?

For the father side of Thad, I simply tapped into my own experience raising two sons. While I had the good fortune of a supportive wife to share the journey, there were still plenty of nights spent worrying about our boys—especially during their tween years, when sports, adventure, and growing independence seemed to present a new reason to worry every week. No parent survives those years without a healthy concern for their children’s safety.

For the investigator side, I drew on my professional training as a CPA, software developer, and college professor. I’m analytical by nature. I like patterns, puzzles, and problem-solving. I can be methodical to a fault and have been known to spreadsheet just about everything.

The challenge—and the fun—was bringing those two sides together. When Thad is investigating a case, he wants to follow the facts wherever they lead. When his son is in danger, he’s a father first. The tension between those roles gave the story much of its emotional energy.

Who inspired you to write PISMO BEACH SNIPER?

I have an “idea catcher.” I bet you have one too.

Mine’s a little notebook on the nightstand where I jot down inspirations that arrive while I sleep, dream, or ponder. It’s chock-full of ideas for the next murder mystery—the howdunnits, the whodunnits, the whydunnits, even possible book titles.

But getting from a brilliant idea to a fully developed manuscript sometimes takes more than a notebook.

Sometimes it requires a mentor. A force majeure.

This is the story of the man who inspired me to finish PISMO BEACH SNIPER.

The year is 2022. Mid-January. I’m taking an eight-week novel writing class through the Institute for Continued Learning at Utah Tech University. Dr. Warren Stucki, author of the Dr. Cooper Mystery Series and six standalone novels, is teaching.

On day one, he tells us, “This is the year you write your novel,” and challenges us to complete Assignment #1—NOVEL IDEA SUMMARY SHEET—by the following week.

All we have to do is fill in the blanks:

(a) Working Title

(b) Genre

(c) Protagonist

(d) Antagonist

(e) Main Supporting Character

(f) Setting

(g) A one-line story idea describing the central problem the protagonist faces and the primary obstacles.

Piece of cake, right?

I had a possible title, but that was it.

Something I had come up with in 2016, years before I had even published the first two books in the Thad Hanlon & Bri de la Guerra Mystery Series.

For the assignment’s Working Title, I wrote down:

CowaBANGa!

A mashup of two exclamations that seemed incapable of belonging together.

Cowabunga!—surf slang for “Dude, that was Awwwwsome!”

BANG!—the sonic crack of a high-powered rifle.

It was high concept.

Excited surfers and unexpected gunplay.

But that was all I had.

Assignment #1 forced me to take the next step.

I scratched out the remaining fill-in-the-blanks, relying heavily on the backstories from my first two books. By the end of the eight-week course, I’d developed a working outline, key plot points, three sample chapters, and a draft query letter complete with a three-paragraph blurb.

I was well on my way to writing PISMO BEACH SNIPER, book three in the series.

My takeaway from Dr. Stucki’s class?

A force majeure can make all the difference between a middle-of-the-night inspiration scribbled into an idea catcher and a finished book on the shelf.

When all you have is the germ of an idea, sign up for a workshop. Let the instructor—and the energy of fellow writers—propel you from a mere notion to a fully realized story complete with character arcs, themes, and purpose.

Muse + Force Majeure = Your next masterpiece on the shelf!

What can we expect from you in the future?

Book Four, of course.

The next installment in the Thad Hanlon & Bri de la Guerra Mystery Series takes place two years after the events of PISMO BEACH SNIPER. Bri is out drumming up new business for the duo’s detecting agency when she stumbles upon a murder that will test both detectives in ways they never imagined.

Here’s the opening scene:

***

Even in the moonlight, Bri recognized the man floating face down in the cliffside pool as Dr. Yicheng Zhang. Potential client. The world-renowned fertility researcher was fully clothed in his signature charcoal wool-blend blazer with well-worn elbow patches, and he didn’t look so good. Pale, bluish skin, and that wild black hair of his fanned out like sea grass.

Bri sprinted to the rescue hook hanging on the cabana wall and used it to snag the good doctor, pulling him toward the pool steps. She strained to flip him over. His lips, forehead, and tip of his nose were a blotchy purple. There was a fine white froth around his nostrils. She checked for a pulse in a Good Samaritan move she knew didn’t have favorable odds. Still, she had to try.

The odds didn’t pan out.

Across the glass wall of the pool that faced the Pacific—brooding more than usual— someone had spray-painted in angry caps:

PERFECTION HAS A PRICE

***

True to cliché, the Five Cities Sheriff’s Department immediately suspects the spouse. But Mrs. Zhang insists she’s innocent, has an ironclad alibi, and hires Bri and Thad to find the real killer.

That’s when the case heats up.

As the investigation deepens, frozen embryos—including those intended for Thad’s future family—become a bargaining chip in a deadly game where science, ambition, and obsession collide.

Shell Beach Slayer (working title) is part mystery, part thriller, and brings back familiar faces, including Thad’s son Zael, now a teenager, and Naiya Ygnacio, his new bride. The stakes couldn’t be higher as Bri and Thad navigate a case that explores designer children, genetic engineering, and the meaning of perfection itself.

Oceano Beach Bedlam

A Thad Hanlon/ Bri de la Guerra Mystery Book 2

Hanlon & de la Guerra have gone full service. In this
second book in the surfing crime-fighter mystery series, Thad Hanlon and his
martial-arts-obsessed partner, Bri de la Guerra, hang out their shingle as
newly licensed private investigators. Now in addition to fraud-busting, the two
detectives do it all. Background checks. Surveillance. Even finding lost souls.
Just about anything that requires sleuthing or going undercover.

All they need is a client.

That’s when a former exotic dancer from Bakersfield CA shows up looking for her
surf prodigy son who’s gone missing in the wake of cult violence terrorizing
the California Central Coast.

What Critics
Are Saying

“A crunchy detective novel set in the world of California surfers.
Jones delivers a proper beach read, both in form and content.”

-Kirkus Reviews

“Honestly, I had a blast with this one. Oceano Beach
Bedlam is a smart and entertaining read. If you like your mysteries with
surfboards, sass, and just enough heart to keep you caring, this one’s for you.
It’s a great pick for fans of offbeat detectives, fast dialogue, and
sun-drenched noir with a brain and a soul. I’d recommend it to readers who
enjoy Janet Evanovich, Robert Crais, or the beachier edges of Elmore Leonard.”

All That Glisters

A Thad Hanlon/ Bri de la Guerra Mystery Book 1

When the facts don’t add up in his surf buddy’s bizarre
death, forensic consultant (and daddy-to-be) Thaddeus Hanlon investigates,
volunteering to go undercover to pick up where best friend Rafi Silva left off
in a secret probe of the U.S. gold stockpile—every last bullion bar.

Rafi’s spunky fiancée, Bri de la Guerra, has suspicions of her own and soon
joins Thad on the hunt for answers. Together, the two amateur sleuths delve
deep, stumbling onto a financial a-stock-alypse in the making, triggering a
brutal manhunt along the Eastern seaboard meant to silence anyone looking to
set the ledger straight.

What Critics
Are Saying

“Jones’ action-packed murder mystery…is
tension-fueled with plenty of twists and two appealing sleuths. In this
detective series opener, Thad Hanlon, a 27-year-old forensic accountant,
becomes the target of a murderous cadre when he accepts a new assignment that
takes him from Los Angeles to the East Coast center of power. Woven into the
gripping plot are sensual, detailed descriptions of Thad’s adventures riding
the waves, which should please the surfer crowd and afford others a visceral
sense of the experience.”

—Kirkus Reviews

“All That Glisters by Topper Jones is well-written with not a
single dull moment. I liked the way the author included elements of action,
mystery, and even some cyber investigating. Overall, I found this book to be an
amazing read.”
