“Holy shit,” Ken Houston said, pointing out beyond the second boat.

“What?” Joseph asked.

And then everyone seemed to see it all at once.

I can’t resist books like this. Every time I start one I’m thinking of that scene and Jeff Goldbloom’s comment from Jurassic Park Two.  LOL

Welcome to My Monday Minis Reviews where I share short reviews of books I’ve read. For today I’ll be sharing my thoughts about the audible book A Human Element, the first book in Donna Galanti’s Element Trilogy. I read the eBook and was excited to listen to it too. I know this is supposed to be a short review but I got carried away.

A Human Element

The Element Trilogy #1

by Donna Galanti

Narrated by Chase Bradley

A Human Element Audiobook

Genre: Mystery / Thriller

Format: Audible

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Ben is hiding from his parents on the shore of Coopersville Lake when it happens.
A meteorite crashes into a group of cabins, one of which contains his parents, and all that remains is a huge crater of steam and fire. In one bright green flash, Ben’s life is forever changed, and for another, it has just begun.

No one could know the long-reaching consequences of that fatal night.

Some months  later.

A young girl struggles to bring her child into the world. She came to the doctor in secret.

The doctor doesn’t know why the mysterious man waiting outside wants the baby, he just cares about getting paid.

In a rush, the baby enters the world. Sadly, the young mother does not survive. But wait, there is another baby fighting to be born, a beautiful baby girl.

An exchange is made, but the doctor doesn’t mention the baby girl, he will give her to the Armstrongs to raise.

This is an especially dramatic scene in the audible book. I read it and got a good feel for it in the eBook, but listening to it makes it much more chilling.

Many years later, that baby girl, Laura, is all grown up and back home trying to find out why the people closest to her are being slaughtered. The answers lie here. She has always had the headaches and nightmares and she knows everything is coming together – the monster chasing her in her nightmares, the mysterious man in black who has always been on the periphery of her life, and whatever happened the night of the meteorite crash. It’s all connected.

This part of the story is also very powerful when narrated. I was anxious even though I knew what was going to happen.

Laura and Ben are thrown together as death races towards them. They need answers about that fatal night if they’re to survive what is coming.

Two babies were born that night, Laura and the boy child called X-10. One looked human in every way and the other looked like a monster.

From the first page to the bittersweet end, I was completely immersed in this book. A story of love, humanity, and absolute evil. And now, listening to the audible, I’m even more full of feels for this series.

Donna Galanti’s debut novel has an energy, an essence, that gives it life.
With a superb plot and a thrilling all- out race to the end, A Human Element is excellent.

Narrator Chase Bradley

I enjoyed this audible edition as much as reading the book. Chase Bradley did a great job, his enunciation is strong and he’s keeps the story always moving forward. Donna made a wise choice using him to tell her story and I’ll be keeping an eye out for more books read by him.

The Empty Room
by Sarah J Clemens
Genre: Psychological Suspense, Thriller, Mystery
.

Rain soaked and dreary, it was a 1901 abandoned Victorian that newlyweds

Dean and Elizabeth Montgomery hoped would fulfill their dreams of a

new start in life, even if the town of Eastbrook, Maine was nestled

under a constant blanket of fog.

The first neighbor the couple meets dashes those hopes when he raises a

bizarre question: what happened to the last person who lived in their

house? A cryptic question, but nothing to worry about. At least not

until the couple looked under the floorboards inside the house.

Under mounting pressure from the residents of Eastbrook to stop questioning

the past, Dean and Elizabeth are driven deeper into the history of

the house, the town, and their neighbors. When the couple discovers

what happened in Eastbrook, keeping the secret could save their

lives, but uncovering the truth might be worth the risk.

What happened inside The Empty Room is a mystery until the last page. A

gripping psychological suspense, the story takes readers on a

cat-and-mouse game where some secrets are better off hidden.

Sarah J. Clemens is the author of the debut mystery novel, The Empty Room.

She started writing The Empty Room in 2008 and formed her own imprint

in 2016 called Off the Page Publishing.

This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

Guess what I spotted yesterday. The first green buds on my Pecan trees.

budding trees photo: IMG_2759.jpg

You know what that means? Spring is here on the Gulf Coast!

It’s time to break out the real summer clothes. I have tons of shorts and tees and I love to finally get to wear them again.

Let’s not forget those shoes. I have a ton of flip flops. It’s important to have the right color for every outfit. I have blue, orange, pink, green, yellow, purple, etc… and in several shades,  including pastels and neon bright ones. It’s so fun being a girl!

flip flops photo: flip flops circleofflip-flops.jpg

And best of all is going nude. Not my bod, just my feet! I love being barefoot and usually do so year round in the house. I also have to have toenail polish to match my outfits and there are so many shades of every color. I even have a basic black. LOL

And I can accessorize my bare feet. There are some cool toe rings and ankle bracelets and barefoot bling. Sometimes I’m torn between what to wear. I’ll put something on. Nope. Take it off and try something else. And so on….. It’s tough being a girl. LOL

barefoot photo: Barefoot Sandals Barefootsandals1.gif

I often think that guys have it made. They just throw on some board shorts and voila! Instant yum.

Back to the buds on my Pecan trees. What is your first sign that spring is here?

33145741  The Night of the Beasts by [Brown, Eric S. ]

Welcome to Freakin Fridays, where I share my reviews of books that scare you, thrill you, and get those endorphins pumping.

Today I’m back with two more stories about the big hairy dude, Sasquatch. These aren’t about the warm and cuddly ones either.

 Boggy Creek

The Legend Is True

by Eric S. Brown and Jennifer Minar-Jaynes

33145741

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve watched a lot of horror movies about Sasquatch. Read a bunch of books too. So I was rubbing my greedy little hands together when I got this book. I knew it was going to be creepy fun. I watched The Legend Of Boggy Creek recently. Funny that I remember it differently now then when I watched it all those years ago. It still has a chilling atmosphere. And I think this would be a good movie too.

The characters do everything wrong, even the ones who know what’s out in them woods. Sitting ducks, I tell ya. You have the the young adults, spending time in a cabin in the big old woods. There’s the creepy neighbor who drops ominous remarks about what might be out there in them woods. And then there’s the police officer who knows what’s out there and goes after it anyway.

Got the picture. Good. Everything goes to hell in a hand basket in no time. People are killed, there bodies mutilated or eaten. The big hairy dude is pissed off and hungry and the puny humans don’t stand a chance. I think you’d better bring a tank to take him down.

Some may not agree with my 4 star rating, so let me explain. I went into this story for some campy fun and lots of gore. I had no expectations of a deep, thoughtful story. So, I got just what I wanted. Ate it up and wished it was longer.

The Night Of The Beasts

by Eric S. Brown

The Night of the Beasts by [Brown, Eric S. ]

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve got several of Eric’s Bigfoot War books to read and when I spotted this little freebie, I grabbed it to see what I might be in for.

The hairy ones with the big feet come calling. Yep, there’s a slew of them and they tear through a town, maiming and killing everyone unfortunate enough to be there.

A security guard’s routine night duty at a hospital becomes more than he could ever have imagined as ambulances race to the emergency room, loaded with people horribly maimed. Reports are flooding in about a big animal, loose in the town, attacking anything that moves. But with so many injured, it can’t be just one, can it?

It’s no words wasted and complete chaos in these few pages. If you like em fast and furious with cryptids on the rampage, this could be one for you. Just keep in mind it’s a tiny story that comes from the world of Bigfoot War.

Obsidian Son
The Nate Temple Chronicles Book 1
By Shayne Silvers
Genre: Supernatural Thriller

A city that doesn’t believe in magic. Bloodthirsty weredragons. Good

thing this reckless playboy has superpowers…

It’s been said that monsters cry when a good man goes to war. But they

should run screaming like little school girls when that man is

secretly a wizard, and maybe not necessarily good…

Nate Temple’s all-consuming quest to avenge his parents is temporarily

put on hold when shape-shifting dragons invade St. Louis. And perhaps

cow-tipping the Minotaur for answers might not have been Nate’s

smartest opening move, because now every flavor of supernatural thug

from our childhood nightmares is gunning for him. Nate learns that

the only way to save his city from these creatures is to murder his

best friend…

Nate’s choice will throw the world and his own conscience into cataclysmic

chaos: avenge his parents or become a murderer to save his city.

Because to do either, he’s going to have to show the world that

magic is very, very real, and that monsters are very, very hungry…

To survive, he might just need to take a page from the book, How to

Win Friends and Influence Monsters.

If you like Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, or Patrick Rothfuss, you will

LOVE the first installment of The Nate Temple Supernatural Thriller

series.

 .
Blood Debts
The Nate Temple Chronicles Book 2
A Wizard, an Angel, and a Horseman of the Apocalypse walk into a bar…

The ancient pact between mankind, Heaven, and Hell has been broken. And

this upstart wizard’s quest for vengeance may have just kicked off

Armageddon. So, time for a drink… or maybe two.

Already plagued with sinister night terrors that could qualify him as a

card-carrying psychopathic insomniac, Nate can barely even manage to

put his pants on in the morning, let alone pick teams for the

Apocalypse.

But when he’s framed as a demon sympathizer, condemned by the Armies of

Heaven, and hunted down by both his allies and the Four Horsemen,

this wizard doesn’t think it can get any worse…

Then they take away his magic. And a wizard without magic stands no chance

against the forces of Heaven and Hell…

.
Grimm
The Nate Temple Chronicles Book 3

The Brothers Grimm – legendary supernatural assassins – have escaped

their prison, and their first day in St. Louis could be Nate Temple’s

last…

Sharing a beer with Death – one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse –

really put a few things into perspective for this foul-mouthed,

billionaire wizard. Like finally strapping on the boots to propose to

his girlfriend.

But assassination contracts have a way of putting wedding plans on hold.

Perhaps permanently. And with the entire wedding party on the

bloodthirsty Grimm’s hit-list, and his family fortune in jeopardy,

Nate realizes they can’t run and they can’t hide. So, time to do

magic and stuff…

But with every flavor of supernatural thug teaming up to help the Grimms,

Nate realizes that friends have become enemies and enemies have

become friends, and he’s forced to cross lines that are better left

uncrossed.

When magic, claws, and teeth dance to the song of war, the only thing left

to learn is who lives and who dies. And if Nate can live with the

consequences.

No wonder a guy is terrified to propose…
 .
Silver Tongue
The Nate Temple Chronicles Book 4

My resume is pretty full: I’ve cow-tipped the Minotaur, decimated a

gang of weredragons, sucker-punched an Angel, and eaten pancakes with

the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse…

I’ve kidnapped one of the most powerful wizards on the planet, and

slaughtered the Brothers Grimm. I’m kind of a big deal.

But I never thought I’d find myself at a crossroads, a pawn in a deadly

game that I hadn’t known existed, willing to sell my soul to save

the life of someone I loved… That’s when I learned true fear,

because the world I thought I knew was all just smoke and mirrors,

and I was just a puppy playing amongst wolves…

 .
Beast Master
The NateTemple Chronicles Book 5

What do you do for Thanksgiving Dinner when your guests are Death, an

Angel, and a slew of other monsters? You have a nerf gun war, of

course… But the Queens of Fae want to crash his party. And the

Beast Master is abducting shifter children for a Monster Circus.

Thanksgiving Dinner plans with Death, an Angel, a vampire, Achilles, and a slew of

other monsters are cut short because a Monster Circus has come to

town. And the Beast Master needs new Monsters for his show…

But the Queens of Fae also want a little deep-fried wizard for the

holidays.

Oh, and Nate is losing that last finger-hold on his

sanity: hallucinating, and talking to creatures that no one else can

see. The ancient demon inside of him is getting stronger, fighting

for dominance, and only one of them can survive.

But when a wizard curses Nate, extorting him to rescue a lethal Chimera child

from the Beast Master’s Circus, Nate’s only option is to partner

with his inner demon, risking his very soul. But his friends begin to

doubt and fear this new, darker Nate, taking matters into their own

hands – even when that means standing against him.

With allies turned enemies, the Fae breathing down his neck, and a

dangerous child’s life on the line, Nate must call upon, bully, and

coerce new storybook legends and gods to save his traitorous friends

from becoming the Beast Master’s next victims…

Discover what – if anything – Nate is willing to sacrifice to save the

friends who betrayed him…

attempting to protect St. Louis from the various nasties we all know

in order to prove his point. His utter disregard for consequences and

Enjoy this glimpse inside.

Before she finished her thought he grabbed her hands. Energy excited her molecules and zipped through her body. She recognized the feeling and wasn’t shocked when he let go of her hands and they were behind the stadium in the field where she first learned Veronica was a witch.

“It’s more private here. We don’t need people listening to us. And your friend is on her way,” he said with grin.

“What?” she said before she remembered witches were telepathic. “Never mind,” she followed up with.

“I’m Cody.”

“Alison.”

Within a few minutes Lacey joined them, jumping right into it and getting to the point. “I’m so happy you found us. We could use you on our side.”

He smiled. “My parents are powerful witches. As their offspring, I have a collection of all their powers; telekinesis, telepathy, lighting balls and bolts, teleportation, and pretty much anything. Anyone in a witch bloodline has magic, but it has to be practiced.”

Lacey stomped her foot and folded her arms over her chest. “You’ve known about us. You see our glow, so why didn’t you come to us sooner?”

He chuckled. “I’m a witch. I know this is new to you, but we don’t get involved unless you need us. We created Slayers. One person, every other generation in a witch of the light bloodline, that the spelled amulets call to and who can use the magic inside the amulet.”

Alison rolled the idea around in her head. That wasn’t news, but she grasped again at the light witch bloodline thing. A thought clung to her brain and manifested. They didn’t derive all their power from the amulets. They each had magic inside them that accentuated the magic in the amulet.

Lacey twisted her face. “You can help us?

“I can help you draw on your own magic that makes the magic in the amulets stronger. Don’t get me wrong, you won’t be able to share each other’s magic unless you are connected by touch but you can strengthen the spelled magic in the amulets and do most anything with it,” he paused.

“I don’t know if you’ve felt it, but there’s disturbance in our energy field. Something big is happening, coming our way. We need to be prepared and ready and you need to tap into powers that other Slayers naturally tap into overtime. You don’t have that time,” he said, his face and voice grave.

My Review

Having followed this series from the beginning, it’s good to be back with these characters.

Emma Lee still suffers from what the town folk refer to as Funeral Trauma. They think she’s a bit off her rocker. I’m surprised she isn’t after having to deal with problems from beyond the grave. She’s a Betweener. She’s sees the ghosts of murder victims. It used to be confined to the ones whose last stop is her funeral home. But that appears to be changing. Also, it may not be confined to just deceased humans.

Her ability hits too close to home when the ghost of her sister comes to her for help. Now, Emma Lee is having to cope with her grief and trying to mend the fences of a sibling relationship that was on the rocks, while also solving her murder.

This was fun and had some new twists.  Reading the book was fast. And I really enjoyed the interactions between Emma Lee and her sister, Charlotte Rae. I’m the youngest of four sisters and, even though we’re all very different and have our share of disagreements, we still love each other. A couple of brief scenes was all it took to make me weepy.

I was quite happy with the surprises and the mystery involved in this one. Visiting with the colorful and sometimes wacky characters in this series felt like coming home again and you can bet I’ll be waiting for the next book, and the next….

Synopsis

That ghost sure looks . . . familiar

But Emma Lee’s own sister refuses to believe in her special ability. In fact, the Raines sisters have barely gotten along since Charlotte Rae left the family business for the competition. After a doozy of an argument, Emma Lee is relieved to see Charlotte Rae back home to make nice. Until she realizes her usually snorting, sarcastic, family-ditching sister is a . . . ghost.

Charlotte Rae has no earthly idea who murdered her or why. With her heart in tatters, Emma Lee relies more than ever on her sexy beau, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross…because this time, catching a killer means the Raines sisters will have to make peace with each other first.

Billy The Coral Snake

My Review

Poor Billy. After spending time with him, no one wants to be his friend. He hasn’t a clue why. It can’t be because he’s poisonous. He’s never bite anyone. What could it be, then?

Such a charming story. It takes Billy a while to figure out what he’s doing wrong. A fun way to teach your youngsters to pay attention. I bet they get what he’s doing wrong right away.

There’s lots of colorful pictures of Billy and his friends. Fun for early readers or reading together.

Joe Joe The Sea Turtle

My Review

What an adorable story. I love turtles and these tiny hatchlings begging Grandpa Joe Joe to tell them a story are too cute.

Joe Joe spins some tall tales for the young turtles. There’s the time he saved his friends from killer seagulls. And the time he took on a Great White Shark. Joe Joe’s sister, Margaret, is fit to be tied by his exaggerations. But the little ones eat it up. Scared and excited at the same time.

Don’t we all feel like we want to be seen as more than we are? This story is a delightful way to show young readers that sometimes being you is enough.

The illustrations are so colorful and the turtles so adorable. I’m sure kids will be as captivated as I was.
