My Review

I love apocalyptic stories. Especially ones with a paranormal or supernatural cause. Kathryn gives us the biblical war of angels and demons.

Unaware that her “curse,” what she calls her ability to see when a person is going to die or if something evil hides behind a human facade, will play a large part in the war to come, Cassandra just tries to get through her days making a living playing gigs with her brother and taking care of her elderly aunt and uncle.

Cassandra and her brother, Johnny, couldn’t be more different. She’s responsible, faces difficulties head on and takes care of business. Johnny just wants to play music and live a carefree, no worries life. But they have a strong bond and pull together as their life takes a turn for the dark side.

It’s come. The last days for humanity. They’d all heard about it in one form or another, the end of days. Demons and angels are warring, humans are on the list for extinction, and the fight to save souls becomes the mission for Cassandra, her family, and friends.

Reading so many books on this scenario and watching many more movies, you’d think it would become mundane, the plot tired. Not so with Kathryn’s creative mind.

The author gives you some great characters. Packing them all into a motor home and setting them off to unknown destinations with demonic creatures on the trail made this a real page turner. You never knew who would survive, who they would save, and what they’d be fighting.

I felt like I was on the road with them. Planning out every detail of what they’d need, down to how much toilet paper they could pack in the RV. The story isn’t bogged down by these little things. Instead, it’s richer, more believable, not glossed over.

There’s a good mix of characters and what role they play in each others survival. A circus clown, a tarot reader, a musician, an elderly couple, Cassandra, Manessah, an angel, and Rayner, a very confused demon.

Those like Cassandra, the chosen, will be able to see the demons they are fighting, while others will have to put aside their disbelief and fight blindly. Having a guardian angel to guide them gives them an edge, while Rayner, the demon, confuses them.

Rayner is an ancient, powerful demon who has a crush on Cassandra. He should be trying to kill her. Instead, he helps the group, warns them of coming attacks, and actually helps in their battles. Still, he’s a demon, and Cassandra doesn’t trust him. And he’s getting on her nerves.

I can’t think of a better group of people to go through the end of days with.

Having read many of Kathryn’s books, I had no doubt she’d blow me away again. Highly recommend this to all who have a sense of adventure and enjoy end of the world situations with authentic characters.

Synopsis

The world has always been divided into good and evil…and some humans are called to fight for one or the other. If you’re called…would you fight? Cassandra Graystone and others like her are born to battle the proliferating demons as the end-of-days approach. She is fated to receive the sword of the angels, warrior-beings who will stand beside her as she battles the demons for herself, her family, friends, and for the last remnants of humanity–for afterwards those remaining will have one last chance to save their souls. They must fight and they must win. Since she was a child she knows and sees things other people don’t…when someone will die or when a demon lurks beneath a human skin. She sees them. Yet she craves a normal life singing out with her musician brother, Johnny, and caring for her elderly aunt and uncle; to be with her friends, Sarah, a psychic, and Walter, a carnival clown. But when Sarah sees apocalyptic events in Cassandra’s tarot cards and demons are everywhere, Cassandra fears she’s either going insane or something terrifying is truly happening in the world. Rayner, an ancient blood demon is obsessed with her. Never having felt pity or affection for a human before he believes he loves her. The demon realm gathers for the final confrontation, Rayner warns. The apocalypse comes. You and your friends must prepare. Cassandra flees that knowledge until an angelic being, Manasseh, tells her: Your powers will grow. Fight for humanity’s survival after the first wave is taken and seek out others like you. Persuade them to join the battle. Only these chosen can see and challenge the demons until the end when all eyes will be able to see them. She doesn’t want her life to change, be anyone’s protector, doesn’t want to be a nomad who battles demons…until catastrophic events force her to and she can no longer deny her destiny. She and her friends must take to the road; they must fight…or see the remnants of humanity consumed in flames.

My Review

I’m always looking for a cozy mystery with a new theme. This is a new one for me.

Cookie Chanel, owner of It’s Vintage Y’all was so excited when her vintage clothing was used for a major charity fashion show. She wasn’t so thrilled about stumbling over a dead body.

And even less thrilled thrilled when sexy Detective Dylan Valentine arrives at the murder scene. She’d like to see more of him, preferably somewhere besides a back alley and dead body.

Did I say she wasn’t thrilled? Well she still isn’t when Charlotte shows up and throws in her two cents. Charlotte is a ghost. Cookie met her when she was shopping at an estate sale. Charlotte’s estate sale. Now Charlotte is attached to her, living in her cottage, waking her up with her off key singing.

It’s Charlotte who clues in Cookie to the fact that the gentleman she’s talking to, the one in the snappy vintage suit, is also a ghost.

Just what Cookie needs. Another ghost following her around. That’s the way it’ll be though. Samuel Sanders, deceased and former gumshoe, won’t be going anywhere soon. The hat discovered at the murder scene is his and where the hat goes, he goes. So until the crime is solved and his hat is released from the chain of evidence, he’s now along for ride.

When Charlotte and Samuel hit it off they join forces, using their ghostly wiles to get Cookie to investigate the murder. Should be fun, and the poor girl arrested for the murder surely didn’t do it. Now Charlotte will have to do some fancy styling of her own if she doesn’t want to join the ranks as a ghost.

I quickly tagged these characters as the Three Musketeers. They all worked so good together, snoopin and sleuthin. And what could be better than a sidekick with some powers of it’s own. Enter, Wind Song, Cookie’s cat. The cat is psychic and uses Tarot cards and a Quija board to communicate. Now that’s different and fun.

Each chapter starts with a tip from one of the characters. It was fun to see who would share what next. And the story takes place in Sugar Creek, Georgia. A southern cozy!

The southern flavor leaks out in some funny ways. I snorted when I read this one.

“Well, pick my peas!”

Made me think of another one that always tickled me.

“Bee on a bicycle.”

A girl with a mind of her own and a nasty habit of finding dead bodies, two ghosts, kind of hot for each other and not ready to go into the light, a psychic cat, and a sexy cop, along with multiple suspects, keep you hopping from clue to clue, laughing all the way.

Good clean fun for all cozy fans.

Release Day Blitz for
The Ghost Chronicles
By Marlo Berliner

Intro to The Ghost Chronicles

THE GHOST CHRONICLES is a YA paranormal with romantic elements and adult crossover appeal. This is the story ripped from the headlines about a young person who dies tragically through no fault of their own. Unfortunately we read these stories nearly every day in the newspaper or see them on TV. The kind of young person you hear has died and you find yourself thinking, What a shame. They had so much going for them, such a promising future. Why did that have to happen? For this reason, this book was the book of my heart. I wanted it to be as realistic a story as possible of what it might be like to die tragically and be trapped in the afterlife as a ghost. Let’s face it, we all have to die and none of us can say with certainty what happens when we do. It’s the biggest fear of the unknown there is! Oh, we may think we know, or may have certain beliefs about what might happen, but what if it doesn’t happen that way? What if you are suddenly and unfairly taken from this life and now you’re stuck and don’t know why? How angry would you be? What would you do? How much would you begin to question all you’ve ever believed in? It won’t be completely apparent until later in the series, but I wanted it to be a story of great hope for anyone who has tragically lost someone they love, especially someone young.

The setting for most of the story was inspired by The Angel of the Sea, an award-winning bed and breakfast in Cape May, NJ. This spectacular inn has been featured on several television programs and in magazines throughout the world. Most notably, it was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as one of the “Best Vacations in the World” and included in her television talk show. The Angel of the Sea is one of the most recognized Victorian structures in the United States. Legend has it that in the late 1960’s, a girl did fall to her death at the Angel of the Sea and did at one time, haunt the inn. The story of the girl has been included in several non-fiction books about ghosts in Cape May. Sarah’s character in THE GHOST CHRONICLES was inspired by this legend. You can learn more about the Angel of the Sea by visiting: http://www.angelofthesea.com/

The cover was designed by the amazingly talented S.P. McConnell.

Isn’t it GORGEOUS!?!?!

The Ghost Chronicles
by Marlo Berliner
YA/Adult Crossover Paranormal
Paperbook & ebook, 298 Pages
November 2015 by Teddy Blue Books

Can Michael get to heaven before the devil gets him first, and if it means leaving Sarah is he sure he still wants to go?

Michael Andrews had everything – a loving family, a great girlfriend and a promising basketball career. That was before the accident that took his life. Now, he’s a ghost, wandering among the living, struggling to understand why he’s stuck. All he wants is to move on.

That is until he meets Sarah, an attractive young girl who died just as tragically as he did. The only trouble is falling in love and binding oneself to another soul is forbidden, for it may keep one or both of the souls bound to earth for longer than they should be.

To make matters worse, there’s also a danger in going too far with Sarah, because the “joining” of two souls in the afterlife is also strictly forbidden and they don’t know what will happen if they do go that far. Each time they touch they can feel the boundaries of their energies slipping perilously into one another.

Things get even more complicated as Michael learns he’s being pursued. Demons are after him because he’s a marked soul, a soul the devil wants very badly for some unknown reason.

So, maybe falling in love in the afterlife isn’t such a good idea.

Claws for Alarm by T.C. LoTempio

Since inheriting her mother’s sandwich shop, Nora Charles is more about hot grilled paninis than cold-blooded murder—until her sister Lacey is arrested. The victim, an esteemed art collector and Lacey’s bullying professor, was stabbed in the heart. Apparently, all over a lousy grade.

Off campus, things were just as dicey. The prof had an ex with secrets, a trophy wife set to inherit a fortune in masterworks, and a scorned student mistress. Going undercover, Nora realizes that investigating this crime is the biggest test of her sleuthing career. Because if she fails, even Nick’s animal instinct won’t be enough to rescue Lacey from a perfectly executed framing.

Amazon * Barnes & Noble

Enjoy this fun excerpt.

The area appeared as deserted as a cemetery on Halloween, and twice as eerie. Nick trotted along beside me as we made our way deeper into the warehouse. Suddenly he froze, tail upright, the hairs puffed and fluffed out like a giant fan.
 .
“What’s wrong?” I whispered, even though I knew he couldn’t answer. We stood in silence for a moment, and suddenly I did hear something. A very faint sound, from far away…like a door closing.
.
“Come on,” I hissed. I lifted my head, sniffed at the air. It smelled pretty stale, but there was another scent, cigarette smoke. I racked my brain, trying to remember if I’d seen either Julia or Samms smoking.
.
Nick’s tail swished and he pawed at arrows painted on the ground. He trotted ahead of me at a brisk pace, and I fell into step. We followed the painted arrows along a white-tiled hallway down to a door with a shade pulled all the way down. A sign placed hap-hazardly in the window proclaimed it CLOSED.
.
I tried the door which seemed to be stuck. I looked at the doorframe, which appeared to be less than sturdy, checked it for alarm wires. Seeing none, I raised my leg and gave the door a swift, hard kick. It clicked open an inch, and I pushed it all the way open. We walked into a tiny office not much bigger than a postage stamp. A large metal desk and battered file cabinet took up the majority of the space. Another door at the far end stood part-way open. Nick suddenly tensed, and I saw the hairs on his back rise. His tail fluffed out, and he started to growl, deep in his throat.
 .
I frowned. “What’s wrong? What do you sense?”
.
Nick reared up on his hind legs and then shot through the partially open door. I had no choice but to follow. The room I now found myself in appeared to be a slightly larger version of the previous office. Nick crouched in front of a large metal desk and as I entered, he shifted his body slightly. I caught a glimpse of two feet, very still, shod in the pair of eggplant Louboutins I’d admired earlier in the evening.
.
“Oh, crap,” I cried. “Please tell me that’s not what I think it is.” I walked around Nick and peeped around the edge of the desk. I saw a twisted figure in a white raincoat bunched up around shapely legs, a tumble of black hair covering its face, the neck bent at an unnatural angle.
 .
“Shit,” I said.
.
“MA-ROW!” Nick yowled.
 .
I heard a sound behind me as Nick dived under a nearby chair. My heart started to beat wildly in my chest. The last time he’d pulled something like that I’d been caught next to a dead body and hauled off to the police station. His fat rear had barely wiggled out of sight before the door slammed back and I found myself looking first down the barrel of a .45 and then, as I raised my gaze, at the grim, unsmiling face of Detective Leroy Samms. He looked at me, then at the feet, then back to me again. He lowered his arm, slipped his gun back into his shoulder holster. “Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in.”
.
I responded almost automatically. “He didn’t drag me. I walked in on my own.”
.
One eyebrow quirked. “Pardon? It’s an expression, Nora.”
 .
“Oh, sure. I knew that.” The queasy sensation in my stomach was getting stronger, and I really felt like gagging. I started to push past Samms but his strong fingers reached out and encircled my elbow in a grip of steel.
.
 “No need to run off.”
 .
I pressed my palm against my cheek. “I – I’m not. I just felt a little…squeamish.”
.
“Of course you do,” he said, still not cracking a smile. “I’ve got some Pepto back at the station. Fix you right up. Then we’re going to have a chat, you and I.” His grip on my elbow tightened.  “Ms. Charles, you’ve got some explaining to do.”

Clare has heard of a place called “The Garden State,” and with their bikes, a little money, and backpacks, the children begin a lonely cross-country journey that tests them both physically and spiritually.

Excerpt

Clare walked faster, clutching the tiny packet to her chest. The sound of the footsteps behind kept pace. She darted down an alley she knew well—turning right, then left, then right again. Standing still, her back against the wall, she listened. The footsteps had not followed her; she had lost them.
Twenty minutes later and safe in the apartment, she met with her co-conspirators: Dante, her seven-year-old brother, and Lily, her best friend.
“I have something to show you, but you have to promise not to tell.”
“We promise.”
Holding out her closed fist, she whispered, “What I have here will change the world.”
Dante’s eyes widened. “It’s so small.”
“It may be small now,” she told him, “but what I have in my hand will get bigger. It will grow and make more.”
“What is it?” Lily asked.
“Is it magic?” asked Dante.
She opened her hand.

Book Description:

‘Twas December 24th, and three brave knights were just settling in for the night when out on the drawbridge, there arose such a clatter! The knights try everything to get rid of this unknown invader (Santa Claus!), a red and white knight with a fleet of dragons . . .

But nothing would stop
their white-whiskered foe.
No matter their efforts,
he just would not go!

This parody of Clement Clarke Moore’s well-known poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas is kid-friendly, clever, and just plain silly. Sure to become a holiday classic of a different kind!

My Review

You all know the poem “Twas The Night Before Christmas. I remember it from a very young age. My brothers and sisters and I used to like to make up our own words for the rhyming. That’s what Joan Holub has done.

Brave Knight, Polite Knight, and Silent Knight, three valiant young lads, must man the battlements, keeping the mysterious invader and his eight fierce dragons from entering the castle.

What a delightful story. The author got very creative with her telling. And she also had a fun little twist on the spirit of giving.

The book is large but not very thick. Easy for young readers to hold or for parents to read out loud to their kids.

The pages are thick and glossy with so many colorful, delightful scenes. And there’s plenty of silly comments to make you and your little ones giggle.

Jingle bells.

Invader smells.

Jingle all the waaay…”

A new book to add to your holiday tradition, reading it over and over..

Some chit chat.

It was a good week. Busy at work. Busy at home. Had some fun with the family. And read some good books.

I spent some time over at my sister’s house this weekend. We did a lot of talking about our blogs and reading. We tossed back and forth some ideas on what we want to change next year.

I’m going to be doing things differently as far as books I take in for review and what kind of posts I’ll be sharing. Not huge changes, just making it less stressful and more fun.

I’m also going to be cleaning up things on my blog, updating my pages and such. And I’m going to start adding some graphics and a blog button. Making it more personal. My sister is going to help me with choosing some designs and it should be fun.

If anyone has some ideas on new content to add to my blog, things you’d like to see or see more of, please let me know!

Happy Sunday!

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!
