Kennedy leaned close, eyes bright with malice. It’s hard to loom over someone as tall as me, but he was giving it his best shot. “You don’t get it, do you? This is none of your business. You don’t even live here. And you sure as hell don’t have any right to be sticking your nose into a police investigation. If I find out you’re stirring things up around here, I’ll throw you in a cell so fast your head will be spinning when you hit the floor.”

I was pretty sure he couldn’t do that legally. On the other hand, if he threw me into one of his cells, it might take me quite a while to get out of it. Logic argued for caution. Still, I hate being pushed around by guys who don’t have any right to push me around.

“All I’ve done is pass along information I’ve heard to people who might be interested. So far as I know, that doesn’t break any laws.”

“You. Don’t. Live. Here.” Kennedy snarled. “Like I said, this is none of your business. Keep out of it and keep your mouth shut.”

I gritted my teeth as I stared at him, trying to think of something to say that wouldn’t get me into deeper trouble.

Kennedy straightened, his gaze still burning, then swept one arm across the surface of the counter, sending jars of jam flying in all directions. I glared at him, furious and horrified.

The corners of his mouth edged up ever so slightly. “Oops.”

A Terrifying True Story of a Sadistic Stalker

by Kathryn Caraway

Genre: True Crime Memoir

.

#1 Amazon New
Release!

What if the man
stalking you worked in ITat the police department?

“Think it couldn’t happen to you? Think again. Read. This. Book.” —John
DeDakis, Award-winning novelist, writing coach, and former editor on CNN’s
“The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer”

This true crime case is told with brutal honesty,
exposing the silent terror of stalking. Gripping details of kidnapping,
intimate partner abuse, and surveillance using everyday tools engrained in
society
—and most households—uncovers systemic blindspots. From
overlooked police reports to exhausting court battles, it’s a story of a
woman’s resilience in the face of relentless fear. A must read for fans of true
crime, survival stories, and psychological thrillers.

Stalkers don’t just
hide in the shadows. Some log in.

Kathryn meets Todd, a charming IT expert for the police
department. He coaxes her into a brief relationship and turns a normal breakup
into a reign of terror. Todd isn’t just obsessed—he’s inside Kathryn’s home
network.

He doesn’t have to be in her house to watch her. Or hear
her.

He sees her text messages—on his screen.

He can follow her car without ever leaving his house.

And he even tells her why: “You are mine. And I don’t
share.”

When Todd asks Kathryn if she wants to see death coming, she
tells him no. Now she waits for it every day. Dismissed by officers, Kathryn
builds a case police can no longer ignore. But the more she learns about Todd’s
past, the more she suspects he might be tied to the unsolved murder of a woman
she has only one thing in common with: Todd.

And if she’s right, she might be next . . .

“A powerful, riveting
account about a woman being victimized by a modern-day monster.”
 —Kirkus

“Urgency of feeling
pulses throughout . . .”

“An inspiring story
of survival . . . the horrors of stalking and its devastating effects on the

He Follows Me

Kathryn Caraway
thought a conviction would end the nightmare. She was wrong.

Todd Bennett is getting out of jail—and he hasn’t forgotten
her. The government offers her a lifeline: new name, new life, new country. But
freedom comes at a cost and safety is an illusion.

U.S. Marshal Wes Kade doesn’t care about feelings. He cares
about results. Cold, disciplined, and relentless, he has built a career on
keeping people alive. But something about this case doesn’t add up. He realizes
this isn’t personal—it’s war.

With nowhere left to hide, Kathryn must face the terrifying

Here’s the Thing About Stalking: It Never Ends

The man who stalked me was convicted. On paper, the story looks over. But in real life, it lingers. It never really goes away. A conviction doesn’t erase the obsession. It doesn’t guarantee my safety.

Well-meaning people might say, “He’ll move on. There’s nothing for you to worry about.”

But there’s plenty I worry about. When he asked me if I wanted to see death coming, I never realized how that split second answer would define the rest of my life. I answered “no” and have waited every day since for a death I won’t see coming.

A conviction is not closure. A sentence completed is not guaranteed safety.

A job application being rejected because of his criminal history could incite him.

A woman he is interested in who learns about his past and pulls away could put me back in his crosshairs.

Or maybe, one day, he will simply wake up and decide I ruined his life.

The truth is, he doesn’t need a reason at all. That’s why I remain vigilant about my anonymity and my safety. I don’t see it as fear; I see it as survival. As I traversed the publishing process, I’ve been asked variations of the same question that I’m sure readers will have once the book is commercially available:

“Since he was convicted why can’t you just publish under your own name?”

“If your story is true, why can’t you use real names in the book?”

For me, the answer is simple, though it’s not always understood by others: publishing my true crime memoir has the potential to enrage him. To lead him straight back to me.

Sometimes they come back.

By my count, I am his sixth victim. The seventh was a witness in my stalking case. So even though he moved on to another, he still circled back to me. It happens.

Amie Harwick, who was once engaged to Drew Carey, had a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend and stalker, Gareth Pursehouse, that expired. It wasn’t renewed. Five years after it expired, Gareth Pursehouse killed Amie Harwick.

That’s the thing about stalking. It is not a neat, contained story. I don’t consider myself a survivor of stalking. In fact, I fear the moment that I let my guard down, he will resurface.

Maybe it’s been years. Or a decade has passed and a feeling of safety returns. The joy of simple things eases their way back into my life like going to the grocery store and not scanning every vehicle in the parking lot or every face in the aisle.

I’ve moved on, but I can never be certain that he has. Maybe he is waiting for me to slip online. Maybe he is waiting for a moment of vulnerability—a relative’s funeral announcement that lists my name along with the date and time of service; or a birthday party or wedding details posted on social media that he thinks I will attend.

And, just like that, I will suffer a death I won’t see coming.

Being a victim of stalking influences every decision I make—right down to the name printed on the book cover. I keep my circle tight. I stay aware. And above all, I will not apologize for protecting myself.

If you’re among the 1 in 3 women or 1 in 6 men who have experienced it, you know that’s the thing about stalking—it never ends.

Hippie Mermaid

By Joanne Guidoccio

Genre: Fantasy

Synopsis

From sea to shore, betrayal follows her wherever she goes.

On Christmas Eve, psychic Kendra Adams reveals the secret she’s hidden for decades—she was once Rosina, a mermaid torn between sea and shore. Betrayed in her ocean kingdom and desperate to escape banishment, she persuades a politician to smuggle her into the human world. But freedom on land comes at a cost, as she soon finds herself ensnared in another web, this one spun by the politician’s power-hungry sister.

.

Enjoy this peek inside:

A smile crept up on Aunt Lina’s face. “We have seven days to captivate your human.”

“What…How?”

“I heard all about the excursion from the Ettas,” Aunt Lina said. “They couldn’t stop talking about the attention you received from those four men. And that, my dear Rosina, is why Annabella is determined to get rid of you. She doesn’t want any reminders of a competition she didn’t win.”

“But I wasn’t competing. I said nothing and let the others pick their humans.”

“Ah, but the humans wanted you. And the one called Blake was not too happy when Annabella claimed him.” Aunt Lina spoke more briskly, “You made a good impression. You stayed much longer than the others, and you risked your life for a man.”

I shook my head. “I forgot about the time.”

“Something you cannot afford to do when you go up there tomorrow night.”

“I can’t go up there.”

“Did La Bella forbid you?”

“No, but I don’t want to upset her any further.”

“If she has mentioned Crete, she has already decided. You need to find a way out of this disaster. Go up there each night until you connect with the human. Persuade him to take you with him. If a human desires you, La Bella will not interfere. She will expedite the process.”

I tried to recall scattered bits of the conversation with Lloyd. At one point, he did mention wanting to take me with him, but there was uncertainty in his voice. He already had issues with the two women in his life.

“Cry,” Aunt Lina advised. “Humans cannot handle our tears. And if necessary, beg him to take you away.”

“His life is already complicated.”

“And yours is not?” Aunt Lina grabbed my shoulders. “This human is your only way out of this mess.”

A  laugh  drifted  from  the  direction  of  the  kitchen.  Julia    recognized    her    aunt’s    distinctive    chuckle,    followed   by   the   deeper   rumble   of   a   male   voice   responding. Julia’s fingers froze on the envelope she’d been  opening.  The  voice  wasn’t  familiar  enough  to  place,  yet  something  about  its  timbre  sent  an  electric  current up her spine.
She  listened  harder,  her  breathing  shallow.  The  male  voice  spoke  again,  the  words  indistinct,  but  the  cadence  unmistakable.  Julia’s  chest  constricted  as  if  the  air  had  thinned.  Her  hands  went  cold  despite  the  warmth of the lobby.

It   couldn’t   be.   Not   after   all   these   years.   Not   without warning.

The Cowboy’s Christmas Gift

Morning Glory Christmas Book 2

🎄A
heartfelt later in life cowboy Christmas romance about second chances,
small-town healing, and the power of love.
🎄

Clean and wholesome contemporary western
romance.

The Snowstorm Was Just the Beginning

Victoria Palmer hadn’t expected
to spend Christmas in a town so small it barely made her GPS. But after a
painful divorce and the betrayal of a husband now living with someone half her
age, her twin sons insisted she escape the glitz of Beverly Hills for the snowy
calm of Morning Glory, Wyoming. One snowstorm, two missed turns, and a very
arrogant cowboy later, Victoria settles herself at the Morning Glory Inn—cold,
flustered, and anything but merry.

Gabe Dupree never expected a
spoiled city woman to march into his family’s inn, insult his hospitality, and
throw his quiet December into disarray. A widower devoted to his daughter and
his ranch, Gabe made peace with solitude years ago. But Victoria’s arrival
brings disruption—and a spark he never thought he’d feel again.

As snow blankets the Wyoming landscape and the town gears up for its Christmas
festivities, Victoria and Gabe are forced into each other’s paths more often
than either prefers. Between tense encounters and accidental heart-to-hearts,
they begin to uncover the hurt and longing hidden beneath their defenses.

Sometimes love doesn’t come wrapped in
ribbons. Sometimes, it rides in on a snowstorm.

Neither are in Morning Glory looking for love, but sometimes the best gifts
come when you least expect them—wrapped not in ribbons, but in second chances.

The Cowboy’s Christmas Gift is
Book 2 in the Morning Glory
Christmas
 series—a sweet, later in life, contemporary western romance
full of holiday charm, second chances, and heartfelt family moments. Perfect

strong, swoon-worthy cowboys. Guaranteed HEA.

With   a   final   assessing   look   at   Victoria,   Gabe   turned  and  strode  across  the  lobby.  His  boots  made  little  sound  on  the  polished  wood  floor  despite  his  size.  He  disappeared  down  the  hallway  behind  the  reception desk, leaving the air somehow lighter in his absence.
Victoria  exhaled,  unaware  she’d  been  holding  her  breath. “Who was that miserable, obnoxious man?”

contemporary western romance.

🎄A heartfelt cowboy
Christmas romance about small-town healing and the power of love.

Snowstorms, Secrets… and an Unexpected
Family Christmas

Ethan Webster thought he had everything figured out—thriving career in Denver,
a sleek loft, and weekends on the ski slopes. But one phone call from Italy
changes everything. His sister and brother-in-law are gone, and their three
young children need him now more than ever. Leaving the city behind, Ethan
returns to Morning Glory, Wyoming—a snowy, small-town haven tucked into the
foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

Back in the hometown he never thought he’d live in again, Ethan leans on the
one person he’s always trusted. Makayla Dupree. A dedicated veterinarian and
lifelong friend, Makayla once taught him to ride horses and stood up for him
when no one else would. This Christmas, she’s standing by him once again… this
time to support him through his grief.

As the town sparkles with Christmas lights and the scent of pine fills the air,
Ethan finds comfort in Makayla’s quiet strength, and sees her in a way he never
did before. Their bond has always been strong, but grief, responsibility, and
the magic of the season spark something deeper. Something that looks a lot like
love.

But navigating newfound feelings and unexpected responsibilities isn’t easy.
With the children still mourning, and Ethan unsure about his future, will the
season of miracles bring them together—or pull them apart?

The Cowboy’s Christmas Surprise is

Makayla  gripped  the  steering  wheel  tighter,  her  knuckles    whitening.    She’d    known    Audrey    since    childhood, had watched her grow up alongside Ethan, had  celebrated  her  wedding  and  the  births  of  her  children.
The  mountains  surrounding  Morning  Glory  stood  unchanged   against   the   horizon,   their   permanence   almost  offensive  in  contrast  to  the  fragility  of  human  life.   Makayla   drove   in   a   trance,   muscle   memory   guiding  her  along  familiar  roads  while  her  thoughts  spun with grief and concern.
By  the  time  she  reached  the  highway  leading  back  to  town,  she’d  made  her  decision.  She  would  call  Ethan tonight, offer whatever support he needed. The children  would  need  stability,  comfort,  and  a  caring  heart.  She  couldn’t  bring  their  parents  back,  couldn’t  heal the wound torn through their young lives, but she could stand beside them as they faced the unbearable.
It  was  what  friends  did  in  Morning  Glory.  It  was  what Audrey would have done for her.

Shirleen Davies believes
love stories are best served with a dash of grit, a few stumbles, and a whole
lot of heart.

She
writes contemporary and historical romance about everyday folks who don’t
always get it right the first time, but keep trying anyway. Raised near the
sunny coast of Southern California, Shirleen spent her childhood bouncing
between the beach and her grandparents’ farm, where she learned that nothing
beats the smell of fresh hay or the quiet wisdom of a rocking chair on a porch.

Armed
with degrees from San Diego State University and the University of Maryland
(plus an unofficial PhD in people-watching and life experience), she crafts
emotionally rich stories filled with flawed, stubborn, hopeful characters who
discover love where they least expect it.

When
she’s not writing about cowboys, deputies, or the women strong enough to tame
them, Shirleen enjoys life in a picturesque northern Arizona town with her
husband. She’s the proud mom of two grown sons, still believes in happy
endings, and is convinced that redemption is just one good story away.

An injustice done, a murder unpunished.

It’s Pride Month in Portland Oregon, but instead of hanging rainbow flags and streamers, Lynley finds herself obsessed with a cold case murder. Starting work at the Cat Park, a sanctuary for senior and hospice cats, is challenging enough for Lynley, but then she learns the founder of the Park was murdered and the murder never solved. Lynley’s cat-like curiosity won’t let her leave the case alone.

But why is the Park’s new owner so fiercely opposed to Lynley’s sleuthing? What’s making the Director of Philanthropy grumpy all the time? Who is sneaking around listening at doors? The dead woman’s ancient cat Silver has a twinkle in her eye, but she isn’t telling.
As Lynley’s granddaughter and her beau make plans for their upcoming wedding, Lynley has other things on her mind. Something is going on at the Park. Is there more to her new job than playing with cats?

~~~~~
TIPS FOR CAT OWNERS
Quotes from Cold Case Cat, a Crazy Cat Lady cozy mystery, by Mollie Hunt
Did you know that my Crazy Cat Lady Mystery Series comes with cat tips, tricks, and facts at the beginning of each chapter? My hero, sixty-something Lynley Cannon, is a cat aficionado, so you can expect she would love to pass on some of the things she’s learned about cats in her years as a shelter volunteer, therapy cat partner, and clowder mamma to nine cats (currently).
Chapter 1 opens on the Cat Park, a cat sanctuary for senior and hospice cats where Lynley is starting a new job. Along her tour, her employer explains that Different cats have different attitudes toward others of their species. Some become bonded to a housemate, while others remain aloof, and still others can’t stand the sight of another cat. Lynley refrains from telling her boss she already is quite familiar with the whimsy of cat relationships.
In Chapter 2, Lynley tosses some treats on the floor for her senior cat Dirty Harry. He finds some but misses others. That’s because Cats cannot see things that are directly under their noses. Lynley doesn’t mind helping her old puss get on the scent to gobble up the treats.
Here’s something I didn’t know until I looked it up for Chapter 5: The most common eye color among domestic cats is yellow-orange, with the second most common being green. Blue-eyed cats represent only a small percentage of the population. Do you have a blue-eyed cat?
An important aspect of cat care, especially in a shelter but also for your home, is creating a stress-free environment so your felines feel safe. In Chapter 6, Classical music, especially that of the harp, has been proven to reduce fear, stress, and anxiety in cats. At the Cat Park, harp music is played over the sound system to help the cats relax.
Here are a few other simple cat tips you will find in Cold Case Cat:
Chapter 11: Make sure you have recent, detailed photos of your cat in case he gets lost. The collection should include a standing photo, a close-up of any distinctive markings, and a close-up of his face and whisker pattern which is different for each cat.
Chapter 7: Some cats are social eaters, meaning they prefer to be attended by a gentle human while they eat.
Chapter 12: Cats yowl at night for many reasons. It may be as simple as boredom or as serious as a medical issue such as pain or dementia. It’s good to consult your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health problems.
Chapter 20: Talking to shy cats in a soft, low tone is one way to get them accustomed to a non-threatening human presence. If you are short on talking points, you can always read something aloud.
Chapter 21: Teaching your cat to come when you call is helpful in many ways, but sometimes they need a bit of a bribe. Calling them for a treat is a technique that works well in many cases.
Chapter 23: An aging cat requires more attention than younger ones. Veterinarians suggest a wellness check every six months instead of the usual year. Meanwhile, it’s important to watch for changes in their habits and behavior that might signify a shift in their health.
Find more cat tips, tricks, and facts in Cold Case Cat and all the other Crazy Cat Lady mysteries.  Finally, here is a suggestion from Chapter 8: Can’t have your own cat? Volunteering at a cat shelter is a great way to get your kitty-fix and help the community at the same time.
About Mollie Hunt
Cat Writer Mollie Hunt is the award-winning author of two cozy series: the Crazy Cat Lady Mysteries featuring a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip, and the Tenth Life Paranormal Mysteries involving a ghost cat. Her Cat Seasons Sci-Fantasy Tetralogy presents extraordinary cats saving the world. She recently released a COVID memoir which she calls, “a tale of a plague and politics, of depression and inspiration, and an ode to the very real and healing presence of cats.” In her spare time, she pens a bit of cat poetry.
Mollie is a member of the Oregon Writers’ Colony, Sisters in Crime, the Cat Writers’ Association, Willamette Writers, and Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA). She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and a varying number of cats. Like her cat lady character, she is a grateful shelter volunteer.
The Day of the Spider
by Keith Wood
Genre: Dark Historical Halloween Murder Fiction
.
‘The Day of the Spider’ is a sort of sequel to the debut
novel, ‘One Day in May’ by the author, but can be equally read as a standalone
work as it is very different, though still set in the 18th century.
The novel is primarily set in the heart of the Hambleton Hills of North
Yorkshire, though it starts off in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire where the
heroine (or should that be anti-heroine), Nellie Chapman, a sexually abused
young woman from a traditional mining family feels she has to move a long way
from her past life. She has no plans but to get away and live a life on her own
terms, an uncommon practice for a woman in the 18th century.
Despite Nellie’s unlawful past, fate ensures that she seems to bear a charmed
life. You may hate her or love her; it’s for you to judge and you’ll find
plenty to entertain as you sit in judgement.
As we all know by now, Brigadoon is a mythical, enchanted,
Scottish village that appears for only one day every century.
That day was when Jack MacGregor’s parents took the leap,
together with their new born son, and opted to relocate to an ‘earthlier’
environment, having the spectral pre knowledge that Jack would, one day, become
an author of note (ish).
Were he to keep residence in the village there would not be
a wide enough audience to read or even purchase his ramblings. That and the
fact that there was no such thing as ‘television’ or ‘films’ or even bookshops
in Brigadoon meant his literary career would have been somewhat stunted were he
to stay.
Jack was therefore raised in a town in Lancashire, where he
developed a strong Bolton accent and a fascination, via Pendle Hill, for
witches… oh, and The Munsters and The Addams Family.
The move also allowed his parents to spend their leisure
time holidaying in such glamorous locales as Blackpool, Fleetwood and Morecambe
– places that they had heard word of only in ancient folklore, back in the old
village. Places they could but dream of. If only they had known the reality.
Anyway, Jack’s education was undertaken in an old Salesian
boys’ school, or college as it was then known, where he honed the gentlemanly
skills of football, fencing, athletics, music, art and of course English
language and literature. He took no heed when it came to mathematics, physics
or Latin studies – he already knew they would be of little use to him in his
future life. And he was correct!
(Excuse me for a moment please. After returning from her
daily romp on the back field, our minx of a Springer Spaniel, Jinny (named
after a character in Jack’s books) has just performed the most pungent poo
known to, well, anybody or anything, right outside the office door, and guess
who’s down for cleaning it up…)
Where was I? Apart from in the shit… so, in a nutshell (or
nutcase) Jack took on many unsuitable roles after leaving college:
Lithographic printing, landscaping, butchering (no murder,
mind), music repping, DJ (he invented The Headbangers Ball, which fizzled out
when MTV nicked the name for their very own with no recompense to JM) working
in a record shop or three, owning a record shop, working as a Placement Officer
for the DHSS, then running two of the UK’s finest small music venues.
From nowhere (but allegedly, China) came a mystery
‘pandemic’ whilst Jack was working part time as a courier – he was now a ‘Key
Worker’! Ha Ha and thrice Ha!
The peace and quiet that accompanied this outrageous farce
finally gave Jack the time and head space he needed to put pen to paper (or one
finger to keyboard) and commence work on the weird and weirder tales that had
been rattling around for many a year.
He had planned much of this in the Lake District, in the
Valley of the Golden Eagles, surrounded by a multitude of darling red squirrels
and the odd faery, but when it came to finally ‘getting it all down’ Jack
completely ignored everything he’d planned and free-formed anew.
The only inspiration was a tiny black cat that Jack’s
partner had discovered sitting smack in the middle of the crossroads, outside
their venue, one terribly stormy evening.
She brought him in and introduced him to their existing cat,
Spike, who proceeded to boss him mercilessly until he became his slave. Still
is!
That tiny black mouser was wittily christened ‘Jet’ and the
tale of ‘Jet Splinters’ unfolded around him, without plan or forethought.
Two books were picked up and published almost immediately by
Green Cat Books in the shire of Derby and the third has been a long time coming
due to real life getting in the way.
Book 3 has definitely been birthed and should be on its way
by 2026, but that’s been promised for simply ages… getting Book 1: ‘A Bustle
In the Hedgerow’ and Book 2: ‘The Shadow Cutters’, under the banner of ‘Jiggery
Pokery’, to TV or Film is a priority, hopefully before Jack MacGregor’s demise,
because he’d like to watch them too … and that, my patient friends, brings
you all up to date.
Jingled
By Evan J. Corbin
Publication date: November 7th 2025
Genres: LGBTQ+, Satire, Speculative Fiction
Matt Daughtry has always felt like he and his parents live in separate worlds—his shaped by the urbane, Northeastern liberal elite, theirs by Southern conservatism, homespun “common sense,” and talk show-fueled conspiracies. His homosexuality remains an open secret, something they sidestep rather than confront, much less accept. When he and his sister return for Christmas, the wrong sibling brings home a boyfriend for the first time.
What starts as a tense but routine holiday gathering takes a surreal turn the next morning. Flights are canceled, pilots and flight attendants mysteriously take time off, and by the following day, an estimated seventy-eight million Americans fail to return to work. Their explanation? They just want to spend more time with their families. Christmas can be every day when you’re with family.
His parents—and millions of Americans—are suffering from a bizarre condition, trapped in an endless holiday loop, determined to celebrate Christmas every day. They make choices that go against their self-interests. Blissfully unbothered by their accumulating debts, economic collapse, or even basic responsibilities, they live in a festive delusion seemingly fueled by an addictive algorithm used by an evangelical shopping app called MerryNet.
At first, Matt sees no reason to get involved. He’s never been able to reach his parents before—why would this be any different? But as the syndrome spreads, paralyzing the country, he stumbles upon evidence linking the outbreak to corporate actors intent on silencing their perceived right-wing enemies. Faced with a choice between complicity and action, Matt realizes that exposing the truth may come at the cost of his career, safety, and sanity. But the country may slide further into a dystopian nightmare if he doesn’t act.
With the help of his boyfriend and sister, Matt must not only uncover the syndrome’s cause and cure but also confront the deeper divisions tearing his family—and the nation—apart.
Enjoy this peek inside:
His father stood at the head of the table, clearing his throat in a way that demanded reverence. “Let’s join hands and pray over the meal,” he said.
Matt hesitated, his fingers brushing Grant’s as they linked. He glanced at his boyfriend, who exuded detached curiosity, like Jane Goodall observing chimpanzees in a mealtime ritual. The faintest twitch of Grant’s lips hinted at a private joke, but he said nothing, playing the part of the respectful outsider with disarming ease.
“Thank you, dear Lord, for delivering this family together tonight,” his father said, his eyes closed. “Even though my children forsake you, please forgive them so that they may join their mother and me in heaven.”
Matt bit down on his lip and squeezed Grant’s hand tighter.
“Amen,” his mother said. “Matt, does your friend eat ham?”
“I do,” Grant said. “Even if I didn’t, I’d make an exception for this. It’s a honey ham?”
“Yes, it’s Matt’s favorite,” she said. “Isn’t it, Matt?”
Matt scowled at his empty plate. “I’m not as hungry as I thought.”
His father’s cheeks flushed. “Your mother spent all day making this meal. Don’t sulk. Eat.”
“I’m not hungry either,” Elise said as she twirled her origami-like napkin on the table.
Matt’s mother sucked in a choppy breath of air and turned her head, blotting her nose with her napkin.
“Kids,” his father said, “this is Christmas. Christmas is for family.”
“I just don’t understand,” his mother said, giving another sniffle.
A hush fell over the table. Silent night, indeed, Matt thought. A music box chimed in the distance under the tree. Matt could feel his pulse thudding in his neck.
Aunt Cathy refolded her napkin and tucked it under her plate. “Welcome to the family, Grant. Matt tells me you’re a psychologist. I suspect you already know we’re crazy.”
“Still a resident, technically,” Grant said. “I’m just happy to be here. It isn’t my place to say.”
“Maybe we do need professional help,” Matt’s mother said behind a smile Matt didn’t trust. “Do you know why my son and his sister hate his parents so much that they’d come here just to starve themselves at our table?”
Matt’s father didn’t look up from his plate. “Judy, let’s leave Matt’s guest alone.”
“No, I want to know,” she said, forgetting to hold her smile.
Grant took a sip of his wine. “It’s really quite simple, Mrs. Daughtry,” he said as if observing an early impressionist work at the art gallery. “Your children love you but feel the transaction is one-sided. Your love for them is perceived as conditional on their support for your values.”
“Excuse me,” Matt’s mother said as indignation dried her tears.
“You’re excused,” Grant said. “I’m a professional. And you did ask.”
“Grant,” Matt said, reaching for Grant’s knee and immediately regretting how his tone sounded like his father’s. His stomach churned as he saw his mother’s hand tremble over her napkin.
“Is this how you speak to your own family?” she shot back.
“Yes. They’ve come to appreciate my honesty.”
“Elise, do you hear this?”
“I don’t know, Mom,” Elise said. “He’s not wrong.”
“Elise!”
“What? We’re all thinking it.”
Matt’s father dropped his fork with a clatter. “If we didn’t love you, why would we invite you here? Wrap all these gifts?”
Elise rose from her chair. “I don’t think it’s faith or love when it just pushes people away while you cling to a piety that makes you think you’re better than anyone who doesn’t watch your news shows, read your websites, vote for your favorite fascists, wear your stupid dresses, or donate to your megachurch!”
His father huffed and stormed out. His mother turned toward the window, biting down on her knuckles. “This isn’t how Christmas should be,” she sobbed. “Christmas is for family.”
“I wouldn’t mind having one of those nutty brownies now,” Grant said.
