Read an excerpt from The Deadening:

Prologue

The stiff bristles of the brush grew coppery as he scrubbed back and forth, back and forth. Wrinkling his nose at the smell, he groped for the mask he’d bought, looped it over his head, and snugged it into place. He dipped the brush in the red-tinged solution in a blue, plastic bowl beside him on the floor, and continued scrubbing. Fifteen minutes later, he emptied the bowl down the toilet and shoved everything he’d used into a trash bag. He fought to staunch the bile creeping up his windpipe, but his throat constricted and he gagged. After retching into the sink, he turned on the faucet and splashed water on his face. Paused to take deep breaths. He could do this. He had to do this. He gripped the edge of the counter and stared out the bathroom window. She’d not told anyone. Thank God for that. No one could know. No one would ever know. He’d make sure. He walked to his garage, opened his car trunk, tossed in the latest trash bag. His hands felt icy. He rubbed them together, wiggled his fingers, and slammed the trunk shut. Admittedly, her terror had excited him. Confusion. Dawning realization in her expression. His lips curved upward into a smile, then disintegrated. Reliving it didn’t change anything. He needed to move forward. He returned and studied the carpet. In spite of his efforts, the stain still needed work. He cursed, dropped to his knees, and pounded the dampness with a fist. Through a veil of fatigue, he watched in horror as the kidney-shaped stain stood and pointed an accusatory finger at him. He blinked, hard. Was he hallucinating? How long had he been without sleep? He crabbed backwards, leaned against the wall, pulled his knees to his chest and squeezed his eyes shut. When he opened them some moments later, the blood-apparition had disappeared. He groaned. He stared at the ceiling until his brain spit out a solution. The problem lay in the other room. That’s how he looked at her now. A problem to solve. He rose from the floor and walked out. His eyes slid from her pale face, down her form, to her feet. He no longer thought of her as warm, soft, desirable. She had been so scared…eyes wide and unblinking as she fell. He shook his head and pushed the image away. Nesting her in towels so her blood wouldn’t pool on the couch, her bronze-sandaled feet with their shiny, pink toenails hung over the edge. He looked away. “Get a grip, man. Just do it.” The towels fell away when he picked her up. He wound them back around her, careful to tuck in the edges. His heartbeat slammed his ribs. She was fragile, a little bit of a thing, like a bird. He drew his index finger across her lips. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “If you had just…if you had only…” His voice trailed away. Jaw clenched, he carried her to his car.

Chapter One

Nathan ambled along sidewalks that wound through the manicured hospital grounds, fishing in his pocket for a lighter. He lit the cigarette dangling from his lips and inhaled deeply, his smile saturated with nicotine’s unholy bliss. “Thank God,” he mumbled around the cigarette, and withdrew it from his lips, stretching. He glanced over his shoulder at the brightly lit ER entrance to Mercy Hospital, rubbing his neck. He rolled his shoulders, inhaled several deep drags from the cigarette, dropped it, and ground it beneath his shoe. “These night shifts are killing me.” He groaned and gazed at the sky. Clouds hid a full moon. He’d been grateful to get the med tech job, but after two months of bodily fluid testing and storage, he was bored. He needed a challenge. Nathan followed his typical route through the hedged lawn, almost on auto-pilot, so when he stumbled and sprawled onto the grass face-first, he was stunned. What had tripped him? Cursing softly, he explored his cheeks, nose, forehead. No damage done that he could tell. “Klutz,” he berated himself, pushing up to hands and knees. Something soft and warm lay beneath his palms. His breathing sped up. He looked down, but it was too dark to see. Trembling, his fingers inched their way to lips, nose, eyes, stiff knots of hair. His mouth dropped in horror. The clouds obligingly slid off the moon and revealed a woman’s body, her hair blood-matted, her face ghostly white. The grass around her head was rusty with blood. He edged his head toward her lips to check her breathing. Shallow, but at least she was alive. He scrambled to his feet, fighting nausea and staring at his palms, sticky with the woman’s blood. Shrieking for help, he raced into the hospital and skidded to a stop in front of the desk. The ER nurses behind the reception desk squinted at him like he was deranged. “Possible head injury!” He flailed an arm at the entrance. “Someone, anyone, come quick!” A male nurse and two aides followed him outside, shoes pounding the sidewalk at full gallop. The tech stopped, turned, and signaled them to tread carefully as they parted ways with the sidewalk and navigated the shrubbery in the dark. Single file, panting, they tiptoed through the shadows until the tech raised a palm for them to stop. “Here,” he hissed at the nurse, and held a point like a bird dog. The nurse dropped to the ground and clicked a flashlight on. “Ohmigosh,” he whispered. He lifted the woman’s thin, pale wrist and glanced at his watch. Satisfied that she had a pulse, he slapped the flashlight into Nathan’s bloodied palm. “Stay with her!” He rushed inside. Within minutes, looky-loos poured from the ER and clustered around the limp form. “Move back!” Nathan stretched out his arms like a cop directing traffic. “She’s barely breathing!” His glanced nervously at the ER entrance. The crowd didn’t yield an inch. The ER doors whooshed open. A stretcher clattered down the sidewalk and onto the dew-damp grass. Chills shivered up the tech’s spine as the ashen pallor of death climbed from the woman’s neck to her face. He dropped to the ground and picked up her hand. The paramedic team drew closer, their flashlights piercing the darkness with slivers of light. The crowd eased apart to let them through. Nathan bent closer to the woman, and whispered, “Hang in there. Help is on the way.” The stretcher slid to a stop beside him. The paramedics dropped to their knees, stabilized the woman’s head with a brace, staunched the bleeding, and wrapped the wound. They eased her onto the stretcher and rumbled away. The aides shared nervous smiles of relief. They looked at Nathan, then followed the paramedic team back inside. Nathan, his heartbeat finally slowing, called, “Thanks for the assist, guys!” as they walked away. The crowd dispersed with curious glances at Nathan, who watched until the group disappeared behind the ER’s double glass doors. He heaved a sigh of relief and swiped perspiration off his forehead. He patted his scrubs pocket for a cigarette, reconsidered, and trotted toward the ER entrance. After the automatic doors parted, he jogged past two closed-door exam rooms and paused at a third, wide open. He looked inside. The paramedics shared their observations with the ER doctor on call as he deftly explored the woman’s wounds. When he finished, he nodded, barked instructions, and pointed at the bed. In seconds, the woman’s transfer from stretcher to bed was complete. One of the nurses whisked a blood pressure cuff around her arm. Another hooked an IV bag to a chrome stand, pierced the skin on the back of the woman’s hand, slid in a needle, and taped it down. The tech stepped back from the door to allow the paramedics to exit. Holding his breath, he stole into the room and crept past a floor-to-ceiling supply cabinet. He planted both palms onto the smooth, white walls behind him and inched sideways, melting into the corner next to a shelf holding tongue depressors, a box of plastic gloves, and a sanitizer dispenser. “Pulse one-fifteen.” The nurse studied the blood pressure cuff. “Blood pressure eight-five over fifty.” “Need a trach,” the doctor barked. “She’s bleeding out. Get some O neg in here.” A blur of motion, two nurses and the ER doctor huddled around the woman’s body. When they stepped back, a laryngoscope, an endotracheal tube, and four sticky electric nodes leading to a cardiac monitor had been secured. The medical team stilled, their eyes riveted to the monitors. The nurses wore sage green scrubs. Both had pink stethoscopes around their necks. The ER doctor had on a crisp, white jacket with his name scripted in black on the pocket. Nathan fidgeted and stuck his head out from the corner a little to focus on the screens. The readings sputtered, stalled, plummeted. “Code Blue!” The doctor spun around. A nurse jumped to the wall and slapped a flat, white square on the wall. “Code Blue!” echoed through the ER’s intercom system. Frantic footsteps in the hall. Shouted instructions. Clanging metal. Squealing wheels. Nathan squeezed farther into the corner as the cart bearing life-saving electronic shock equipment exploded through the door. “Brain must be swelling,” the doctor mumbled. He grabbed two paddles and swiped them together. “Clear!” The woman’s body jolted. The doctor’s head jerked to the cardiac monitor. Flat. “Clear!” He placed the paddles on the woman’s chest. Her frail torso arced. The machine blipped an erratic cadence, then droned a steady hum. The doctor cursed. “Clear!” Another jolt. The monitor surged, sagged, then settled into a reassuring metronome blip. Tense faces relaxed. Applause spattered around the room. The doctor blew out a long breath. “Okay, people, good job.” He smiled. Within minutes, more lines snaked from the woman’s form. An orogastric tube drooped from the corner of her mouth, behind the intubation tube. A lead to measure brain waves clung to her forehead. The doctor studied each monitor in turn. Nathan let out the breath he’d been holding, slid down the wall into a crouch, and balanced on the balls of his feet. “Any additional instructions, Doctor Bradford?” Brows raised, the nurse waited. He rubbed his head thoughtfully. “Think she’s stable for now. CAT scan already ordered?” She nodded. “Of course.” “Tell them to expedite.” He cocked his head at the woman. “May be a long night. Watch her closely.” The doctor strode to the door, paused, and turned. He glanced at the tech huddled in the corner. “Good job, son.” Nathan grinned and rose from his crouch, his chest puffed out a little. He’d never saved a life before. After a sympathetic glance at Mercy Hospital’s latest Jane Doe, he returned to the lab. *** Excerpt from The Deadening by Kerry Peresta. Copyright 2021 by Kerry Peresta. Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

I was born… No, I won’t do that to you. I’ll sum up, instead. I grew up in Colorado. Met my husband in high school and proceeded to move all over the world. In the course of our long, long, marriage we’ve managed to move over 35 times, living all over the United States as well as Singapore, China and Canada before finally settling down in Arkansas — our favorite place of all.

It was while living in China that I finally slowed down enough to start writing some of the stories that were floating around in my head. A large part of Brain Storm was written in our apartment in Suzhou, a city located a few hours outside of Shanghai. And Starbucks. There was a Starbucks nearby and I spent quite a bit of time there, nursing a latte made by Killer or Three (the names of the Baristas) while I wrote Taylor’s story at my make-shift desk near the window.

When we returned home to the States, Brain Storm was nearly finished and I’d caught the writing bug. The first book took me a couple of years to complete. Now I can write a book in a few months if life doesn’t get in the way. It has a way of doing that. Cooking, cleaning, laundry…

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

It’s a combination of both. Some characters I make up, but there are others have a basis in real life. Alex Connors, for instance, is based on my grandfather. A small man of Irish descent, the two men share a number of traits and characteristics. Connors — as Taylor calls him — is a man that she takes an instant liking to and she seeks out his advice and companionship on a regular basis.

Taylor herself is somewhat a reflection on some of my quirks… She’s addicted to lattes, does a lot of her thinking in the shower and has little to no tolerance for liars. She’s also morally conflicted. With her abilities, she can do things that no one else can, so she worries about losing control and crossing the line. I think given the circumstances Taylor finds herself in we all would be torn at times — but just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. With great power comes great responsibility. It’s something that keeps her awake at night, and has me pausing over the keyboard asking myself if I did this, could I look at myself in the mirror? Would this compromise my principals and beliefs? It’s a fine line to walk, but Taylor tries her best.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Brain Storm?

Oh, the characters! There are some great ones in the series, and they are pretty well defined. Unlike the majority of thrillers out there, there are relationships here. You get to know and love Taylor’s “crew”.

There’s her best friend Trinity — the pitbull lawyer that is loyal and fierce. Mama D is Trinity’s grandmother. The one that holds them together and who Taylor seeks out when she needs some tender loving care. We have Jonas, the police detective that ends up on the run with Taylor, and Mac — the man who has been secretly watching her for years — waiting for her powers to emerge. Then there’s Lars. Ah, Lars. A quiet but deadly giant of a man who irritates Taylor beyond belief. He’s determined to protect her in spite of herself, which makes for some rather interesting and amusing situations.

There are others as well and I try to make sure they all stay in character — acting and  reacting the way you think they would. Each one fills a space in Taylor’s life, and she wouldn’t trade them for anything. In fact, protecting them is the reason she does what she does. She loves them as much as fans of the series do!

How did you come up with the concept for the book?

I’ve always been fascinated with how the mind works and  I love action, suspense and thrills in the books I read, so combining the two things seemed — pardon the pun — a no brainer. At least for me.

The bad news is that the books are cross-over genres. They don’t have vampires, demons or werewolves so they aren’t really considered paranormal, but they have a psychic element so they aren’t traditional thrillers either. They’re a combination of both.

The good news is that they’re different. My readers love the psychic twist in both of the series. I think it’s something we’ve all been through. Whether it’s sensing something is about to happen, or that feeling of dè já vu, most of us have experienced a time when we ask ourselves did that just happen? That’s what makes it fun. What happens to Taylor, could happen to us…

What is your favorite part of this book and why?

My favorite part is that Taylor evolves —  not just in Brain Storm, but throughout the series. In the beginning when her abilities emerge, she’s thrown off her game, struggling to find her balance, but she learns. In the latest book in the series, she’s a force to be reckoned with. She’s come into her own and through it all, she manages to hold to her values and moral code. It’s a hard journey, but she’s gotten there. Now we’ll see what she can do with it.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I still don’t consider myself a writer. I’m a storyteller. I’ve always been a storyteller. I just put it down on paper now.

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

I have a beginning and an end. I know what the story is about and how it starts, but other than that I let the characters weave their own tale. I’m very strict about details — the story has to make sense; questions have to be answered; characters have to react as you or I would. I find an outline tends to restrict that process. The result is often surprising, even to me. Sometimes  the book is nothing like I thought it would be, but I don’t change it. I don’t re-think what the characters do. I don’t do drafts and re-writes. What I write the first time is what goes to press. It’s scary, but it works for me.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

Hopefully, a little of both! The books are different — containing a psychic element in a genre that usually doesn’t have that, but it works.

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

That’s a great question! And yes — some of the main characters even showed up unexpectedly.  Two fun ones made their appearance in the series a couple of books ago and I brought them into Taylor’s crew in the latest book. They’re a great addition and already have their own fan base.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

Quite a bit. I try to make sure things work the way they’re supposed to and that it all makes sense. I pick out locations, study maps, try out different things so see what might actually work and what doesn’t. The books all have a psychic twist, so I try to make sure the rest of the story is as accurate as possible. If no one ever runs out of ammo, or takes a wrong turn, it lowers the ‘believability’ factor.

Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?

I think it’s that they’re human. They’re like you and me. Normal everyday people who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances. They react like we would. Have the same fears, needs and wants. The same daily issues to deal with. Life doesn’t stop in a crisis. It just gets more complicated.

Each of the characters has their own weaknesses and quirks, along with their own unique strengths. Together, as friends, they are a formidable force. They love and care for each other. They also argue, tease and annoy. In other words — they’re us.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

I write in silence. Once I start writing, I’m oblivious to everything else. I hear nothing. I see nothing. Not even my alarms to get up and move away from the keyboard. I know a lot of authors write to a song, but I don’t. No sense wasting perfectly good music. That’s for after the writing is done…

What can we expect from you in the future?

More books. More adventures. Taylor has wrongs to right, and Molly has just begun solving her mysteries  — so there are plenty more books to come.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?

If my readers see this question, they’re going to die laughing, because they know how I labor over naming the characters. The names have to be perfect and I have a terrible time picking them. The worst part is that I can’t write until I have the name — because the name is everything. For instance: The Molly McMurray Mysteries all came about because of the name.

A fan of Taylor’s wrote me an email excited about the books and her name was Molly McMurray. I instantly fell in love with it. I asked her if she minded if I used it for a character and she said it was mine! Suddenly there was this whole little person, with a personality and a perky attitude and a psychic twist all her own and the new series was born. I wish finding names were always that easy…

How long have you been writing?

Only about ten years. I got a late start. Don’t get me wrong —  I’ve always told stories. I made up tales for our daughter and one of my favorite pastimes was making up stories about people we passed at the mall or in the park. I wrote stories, but they were in the form of letters back when we put pen to paper instead of fingers to keyboards. Everyone told me I should be writing books, but there never seemed to be time. Then we moved to China and suddenly, there was nothing but time. I wrote most of Brain Storm there, but when we returned to the States, I went back to my old ways. Having spare time to write was thing of the past and the book sat on my computer, unfinished. But the need to write had been sparked and I discovered that if I wanted to write, I had to make the time. So I did. It’s like everything else in life — you make time for the things that are important to you and writing had become important. I only wish I had learned that lesson sooner.

I’m Cat Gilbert, and I write the Taylor Morrison Psychic Thrillers and the Molly McMurray Mysteries. In both series I try to give you, the reader, that experience. Characters you can connect with, a gripping plot chock full of action, danger, and enough twists and turns that even I have a hard time keeping up.
The The Taylor Morrison series centers around Taylor Morrison, a private investigator whose life is turned upside down when she suddenly develops psychic abilities. We’re not talking X-Men, comic book, mutant type stuff here. Instead, this is the kind of thing you’ve always wondered about. Or at least I have. The idea that maybe we aren’t utilizing our brains to their fullest. That maybe if we tried hard enough, we could do stuff and if we could, what sort of ramifications that would have.
The Molly McMurray Mysteries is a new series. The main character is, of course, Molly McMurray. There’s a psychic ‘twist’ to this series as well, and his name is Kaegan. Who he is, and the role he plays, I’ll leave to you to discover.
Having moved over 32 times, Cat Gilbert now makes her home in Arkansas with her husband and their dog, Clancy. When she’s not writing, she spends her time trying to figure out a way to keep the deer from eating her blackberries and fig trees, experimenting with new Paleo recipes, and attempting to convince Clancy that playtime has to wait until she finishes the chapter.

Ellerslie

by William Francis

Ellerslie by [William Francis]

  Synopsis

Did you know author F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda lived in a haunted house?

It’s the Jazz Age, it’s Prohibition and aviator Charles Lindbergh is the most famous person in America. Author F. Scott Fitzgerald rents a mansion in Edgemoor, Delaware called Ellerslie hoping for a quiet retreat so that he can write his next novel following The Great Gatsby.

April Ross, the first and only female history major at the University of Delaware, is commissioned by the owner of Ellerslie to research the estate’s history for a potential sale. At least, that’s what April is told. In the days ahead, April’s historical research uncovers Ellerslie’s former owners dating back to 1810. She interacts with the Fitzgeralds, yet endures unexplained occurrences and visits by an unknown woman. Against her better judgement, April eventually accepts that the woman is a ghost and realizes that her true purpose is to find out who this woman is, or was, and what happened to her in real life.

 Enjoy this peek inside:

“I don’t know,” Scott said, lifting his glass of gin, his bowl of stew untouched. “I’m just so sick and tired of hearing about Charles Lindbergh. They report everything he says and does.”

Zelda spooned her stew and turned serious. “I’m sorry, Fitz. I know you’re upset about the latest sales figures for Gatsby. I should’ve been more receptive to your feelings when you told me.”

Scott took another sip. “I blame the title. I told you I hated the title.” He mimicked sarcasm. “The Great Gatsby. Rather pretentious, don’t you think? And what’s so great about him? He’s a sick symbol of today’s greed and self-absorption. Who needs to read a story about a man who epitomizes what we see in everyday society?”

“You know,” Zelda said, “I think those journalists who are coverin’ Lindbergh would better serve the public if they examined the disgusting tastes of American readers. They need to explain to me why dime novelists like Zane Grey are making a fortune while respectable writers like you, Fitz, are not.”

April appreciated seeing Zelda act kindly to her husband, but she wondered how long it would last.

“My friend Mencken is soooo right,” Scott said after tasting some stew. “Quote: ‘No one has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of plain people, nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”

“Fitz, maybe you should write one of those dime novels.”

“I’d rather die.”

“Do not fret, monsieur. I believe you could write a good one.”

“Well,” Scott said to April, “what do you think? You’ve been silent so far.”

April put her spoon down and took a moment to formulate her response. “I’ve been reading The Great Gatsby and I really like it. I’m intrigued by the mysterious Jay Gatsby and how Nick perceives him. And then there’s the relationship between Jay and Daisy and Tom Buchanan. I look forward to finishing the book, hopefully tonight.”

“Thank you for saying so, but that wasn’t the question. Should I write a dime novel?”

“No, sir,” April said staring directly at Scott’s bloodshot eyes. “There’s nothing wrong with writing at an elite level. It’s a known fact that the masses prefer tabloid stories and yellow journalism, and that Mr. Hearts has capitalized on this. But I think you’d be doing yourself and the literary world a great disservice if you lowered your talents to that type of writing.”

Scott’s eyes watered. He looked shocked.

“Wow, Fitz,” Zelda said, humbled. “I think that’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to you about your writing.”
