My Review

Joe is very different from the other books I’ve read by H.D. Gordon. There is an element of the supernatural, but it’s in no way the main focus. This has more of a suspense/thriller story line and you’ll feel it in your heart beat.

The writing is indescribable, it’s so good. I’ll do my best to tell you how this story made me feel.

It’s told from several different points of view, with Joe being the main character. You’ll really like her. She’s got this ethereal look to her, and the author gave her a flaw, a stutter, which only made her stronger for me. She wasn’t shy about it, she just didn’t talk much because it was hard. Maybe that’s why she has the special ability of seeing things before they happen, since she spends so much time in her own head.

When something really bad is about to happen, her hands begin to itch and she has to sit down and let it take control, drawing an image of what’s to come.

It’s bad. very bad. Someone plans to go on a killing spree in the Quad at the university she attends. Joe’s biggest fear is failure. She doesn’t always succeed when she tries to intervene in her visions, and the worse they are, the higher probability of failure. As Joe says, she’s no hero, but I beg to differ.

Maybe if she didn’t have to go it alone, things could be different.

I mentioned the story being told from multiple POVs and it worked fantastic for this story. You read the gunman’s thoughts, his madness. You get to know some of the people who are unaware of what’s coming, connect with them, become involved in their lives, and fear for them. As they are so prominently featured in the story, does this mean they are victims, helpers, or survivors? I was afraid to know the answers.

I’ll try this once to describe how the writing felt. As I read, I felt this need for one more sentence, one more paragraph. one more chapter. It was conscious, like hearing your heart beat, your harsh breathing, feeling your muscles tense. the hairs stand up on your neck. I was there. I was in Joe’s head and in the story. I hope you get what I mean.

Once again, the author has surpassed my expectations. Each new book I read goes one step further, moves me that much more. What a ride!

My Review

You jump right back into the story of Joe where it left off in the first book.

I can’t really tell you about it as it will spoil things for ya.

What I will talk about is the writing. Once again, I can’t begin to pull out of my head the words to express how the author mesmerized me. It’s like she cast a spell and I was taken into Joe’s head. I read her thoughts, felt them, and visualized them so clearly. And it was gut wrenching.

This time Joe is up against a diabolical lunatic. A cult leader crazed beyond control with so many innocents under his fanatical influence.

When Joe’s ability shows her what’s going to occur, she once more peers into the abyss, enters the darkness, and hopes to reemerge, mission accomplished.

It sounds easy, but Joe will need to protect herself in more ways than one. The dangers aren’t all plain to see.

This is told from many different points of view, like the first book, and works every bit as good in this one. You’ll begin to understand how the cult followers accept the madman’s teachings and blindly follow. You’ll see inside the fanatic’s mind and be appalled by his deranged thinking and rants.

And you’ll get to know Joe even better. With some of the innocents being young children, Joe’s maternal instincts come forth. This was especially moving, as Joe hasn’t had an easy life. And that’s why I was thrilled to see the two men in her life were back in this book. It’s not a love triangle. Fra from it.

The young man would like to be more than friends, but knows not to push it and the other is an older gentlemen, Joe’s neighbor, and he is a huge support when she feels so alone.

I classify this as a white knuckle read. I don’t think I relaxed from the first page to the end. I wasn’t assured of a happy ending. Joe says she’s no hero, and you never know what can happen.

Thrilling and suspenseful. Drink the kool-aid.  You’ll love it.

She soon learns that she is the last known member of an elite race of supernatural Warriors, and is thrust into a world full of vampires and werewolves who all seem to regard her as some sort of savior. Meanwhile, Alexa battles a monster within herself that seeks to gain control; a monster that seeks blood.

When she is asked to attend a school of fighters, whose exams consist of gladiator-style competitions, she must decide who she can trust among the smiling faces. If you think Blood Warrior by H.D. Gordon was great, which I do, you are in for more thrilling reading with Half Black Soul (Book 2 of the Alexa Montgomery Saga).

Spoiler Alert

This is Book 2 of the Alexa Montgomery Saga for those of you who have not YET read Blood Warrior(Book 1).

The story picks up right where it left off in Book 1. Alexa has left Two Rivers, heading to Dangeon, the prison where it is rumored her mother is being held. Alexa believed her mother was killed by the Lamia, but has been told that is a lie. Believing her sister Nelly will be safe in the city, she hits the road alone.

An incident in a parking lot adds new images to her tattoo. This time she had to kill a human. The monster inside her is getting harder and harder to contain. Once unleashed, she fears losing herself as she almost can’t get it contained again. Lucky for her, Kayden did not listen to her and follows her. His presence is a balm, helping her to calm down and get control of her monster inside.

As they prepare to enter Dangeon to rescue her mother, Alexa fears the outcome. This may be the last time she sees Kayden.

“Kayden ran his hands through my hair, and I shuddered in his arms. His fingers found my chin and tilted my head back so that I was looking up into those beautiful sunrise eyes. “It’s okay Alexa,” he whispered…… Then, he kissed me. The sounds of the ocean died out around me. The smell of the salty air disappeared and yielded to the scent of my Kayden; my Libra. I knew nothing other than the way his lips felt and moved against mine as desperate as they had been in the parking lot of that rest stop, just a couple of days earlier. His warmth and safety…and, yes, love, gave me a reprieve that I hadn’t realized I needed so badly. All of a sudden I wished I’d given myself to him in that hotel last night. But, this would have to be enough. Against my wishes and beyond my control, a single tear fell from each of my eyes. It all seemed so incredibly…unfair.”

Then she enters Dangeon.

“Be ready” she told her monster silently.

“I’m always ready.”

Back at Two Rivers, her sister Nelly has had to do some growing up.  She has stumbled upon a conspiracy in the city, war is coming and sides must be chosen.

She makes covert trips to the woods to strengthen her powers, preparing for the struggles ahead. One such trip lands her in serious trouble. It is the full moon and the werewolves roam the woods at night. She shouldn’t be out here.

Victoria, a werewolf, hates both Alexa and Nelly and has been waiting for a chance like this. She catches Nelly’s scent and rushes through the woods, intent on ripping her throat out.

Now Nelly’s powers will be tested.

“Helpless. I hated that word. I had considered myself helpless for my entire life. I’d skimmed by with the comfort that Alexa would always be by my side to fight my battles for me.

I realized. I had never given myself enough credit. I could handle this. I’d have to. No one was here to wipe my bottom and give me a bottle.

Victoria – she was positive that I was what I always thought I was: helpless. Well she was wrong.”

Nelly, forced to look out for herself now, takes charge. But she needs Alexa to return. She knows about the dirty little secret hidden in the woods and about the blood.

H. D. Gordon does not disappoint in this sequel to Blood Warrior. She tells it from multiple points of view and it really worked for me. It didn’t  interrupt the flow at all and actually made it easier to follow the events. I felt like I was watching a movie.

Her characters mature throughout the story, making them genuine. The plot continues effortlessly and gains momentum, pulling you with it. Secrets are laid bare and you zigzag along, picking up crucial, need-to-know-information with each scene. Great writing, with many thrilling fight scenes and descriptive inner conversations by the characters makes for a great sequel. My connection is stronger and my anticipation is revved up.

I hope H.D. Gordon writes really, really fast. I want more!

Oh yeah! The very last sentence is a killer! I know you will be tempted to peek, but don’t. It’s worth the wait!

Another thing I enjoyed was the inner dialogue between Alexa and her monster, or other self. It is often humorous. Here is one of my favorites.

Alexa to monster: “We don’t have to kill them!”

Monster: “Oh, for shits sake, grow a pair….This is war, Warrior. Get with the program or turn back around and go the f..k home!”

I had several laugh-out-loud moments because of these conversations.

4 STARS Loved it.

Here is my review of Blood Warrior (Book 1 of The Alexa Montgomery Saga)

12570845

Fighting is all Alexa has ever known. Her mother uses makeup to cover the bruises, the ones she herself caused. She never explains why Alexa has to learn, she only says it is necessary to be prepared.

Her younger sister Nelly couldn’t be more different. Always dressed in the nicest clothes, makeup tastefully done and not a hair out of place. She was slight of build, more delicate, and Alexa was glad Nelly did not have to fight their mother. Alexa adored her sister and would do what ever it took to keep her safe, but from what?

I admired how fiercely Alexa loved Nelly. Her protective instincts towards her sister were more lethal than a momma bear for her cub. I have three older sisters and they were  always standing up for me against others, but liked to tease me as older sisters do.

It was a good thing her mother prepared her physically for what was coming, but Alexa could have used some answers to the mysteries surrounding her.

They came late one evening. The Lamias.  They looked like humans, except they weren’t. Eyes completely black, pale white skin, emitting horrid shrieks. There for one reason only, to kill Alexa and her family.

Alexa and her mother fought well, shielding Nelly, but they were vastly outnumbered and when Alexa’s mother orders her to take Nelly and run, she knows there is no other choice. However much she hates leaving her mother behind,  knowing she can’t survive, Alexa must keep Nelly safe. There is no other choice.

I was a little confused in the beginning. It seemed like Alexa was being abused by her mother, but she was actually preparing her for what was surely coming. The Lamias – part demon/damned souls, their only purpose being to cause pain and to kill. Forced to leave their mother behind, the sisters seek refuge at Two Rivers, a spectacular city surrounded by water. They should be safe there. Lamias can not cross water.

At Two Rivers Alexa discovers who and what she is and some secrets are revealed.

Blood Warrior is a great introduction into this series about vampires and werewolves. There are several love interests for Alexa, but not what I would call a real love triangle, along with some intense fighting scenes-vividly written and a whole lot of mystery.

H. D. Gordon has built a marvelous new world. It is always amazing to me how an author can take something tried and true and make it unique and surprisingly fresh. Her writing is crisp, without a lot of fluff, and she tells the story fluidly, capturing you and putting you at the scene.

A great beginning to this series, Blood Warrior sets up the plot, introduces the characters and their world and fills you with anticipation. I already have Half Black Soul, the second book in this series, and am so glad I don’t have to wait to dive back into this world as this is not a stand alone book. I’ll tell you about it later!

I urge you to get Blood Warrior and enter a new world. You won’t want it to end.

And now for my interview with guest H. D. Gordon

How about we start by having you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 23 years old and the mother of two beautiful girls. My children get the vast majority of my time, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. They both will begin school next year and I’m not sure what I will do with myself when that happens. Well, yes, I do. I will read and write more. Those are the two activities that take up pretty muck all the rest of my time, and I wouldn’t have that any other way, either. A mother and a writer, that just about sums me up. I also play a little guitar, long walks on the beach, etc, etc.

How did you pick this genre and where do you get your ideas?

This genre was always a passion for me. I love all things fantastical. Ever since I was a child and obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer(I used to carve chopsticks into stakes and carry them around with me, in case I had to slay a vamp, of course) and the obsession never waned. Stories, ideas? Well, they come from everywhere and from nowhere. There’s really no other way to describe it. With Blood Warrior, all I had was an opening scene, which I handed to my father to read. He then advised me to take the next semester off of college to write this book. He is huge on school, and this was unheard of from him. I took his advice and am so happy I did. I now write full-time for a living. It’s the best thing that has ever happened to me, other than the birth of my children, of course.

Does your character Alexa resemble you in any way?

Alexa is pretty much me only way, way cooler. Basically, she is everything I wish I could be(except for the homicidal tendencies). More accurately, she is me before children; reckless, hot-headed and young. I think the biggest similarity is our loyalty to those we love. Loyalty is the most valued quality I think a person can have. When I wrote this book I honestly never expected the success it is having. I wrote it for me, and so it indulges my fantasies, and I wrote Alexa to be like me because I sort of wanted to live through her. She is my hero. When I get scared I think to myself “Alexa could handle this.”

What are you reading now?

Lots and lots of Stephen King. Him and Poe are my literary heroes. Poe influenced a lot of my writing as a child, and King embodies everything I aspire to be. I just finished The Stand(awesome btw, so read it) and my fav book of all time is The Shining. I am currently reading The Dark Tower Series and I can’t get enough. King’s attention to the words is just…well, amazing. Someday I hope to be as good as him, and I believe I’m getting there. My new book Joe, due out on June 30th, will hopefully show my growth. Give me a few years and I hope to rival all the males dominating the world of books(Koontz, Patterson, King). I hope to show them what a female writer can do. I guess we will just have to wait and see. But,  I’m getting there.

How do you spend your spare time, if you have any?

Sparetime? Lol, I don’t even know what those words mean. My children come first, but I have gotten used to reading and writing around them, which is to say the least, distracting. But really that’s it right now. I read and write like crazy and make sure my girls get my full attention. There isn’t much time for anything else. But. really, for me, it is like living the dream. I can read and write anywhere, and I do. It’s a dream job. I get to stay with my girls 24/7 and do what I love in between. I couldn’t imagine a better life. (My daughter just came in to tell me about a boy who turns into a turtle and a boy who turns into a “T-wex” as I write this). Gotta love em.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Yes, I am working hard to get books out. My new book, Joe, is my proudest work yet, and I hope to pull in a wider audience with it. After that, two more Alexa books will be released in 2012, the next one at the end of this coming August. I have a lot of stories to tell, and I plan to do just that. So, huge thank you to the fans! You guys have been so supportive, and for this I love you all.

Here is a blurb from Goodreads about Joe, H. D. Gordon’s upcoming new novel, scheduled to be released on June 30, 2012.

Joe
From the author of The Alexa Montgomery Saga comes a book that will take you into the mind of a genuine psychopath, the lives of six ordinary people and the world of a very special girl named Joe.
Joe is seemingly an ordinary college student. She works, studies and reads. But in between these activities Joe has a gift that promises to add a dose of color to her life at any given moment. Joe sees things before they happen. Bad things, and the worst thing she has ever faced is just around the corner. Someone is planning a massacre at the college university that Joe attends, and the only person with a hope of stopping the psychopath is her.
Oh, the beauty of foresight. More like a curse. Joe has four days to figure out the mystery, make plans to take down the psycho and save the lives of people. People like you and me. ordinary people.
