The Jersey Devil

by Hunter Shea

28109846

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

 My Review

Having read a bunch of Hunter’s books, I thought I was prepared for The Jersey Devil. So not!

Several generations of the Willet family vow to stop the monster at any cost. The beast has haunted them for years and they want there vengeance. And that cost is high. I’m telling you now, do not get attached to any character. Hunter’s never shy about killing off his characters but he goes above and beyond in this book. After several people I started to like got killed I knew the worst was yet to come. Oops, there goes another one, and another. I tried to count how many died, but lost track somewhere in the double digits.

And the creature. The monster. Heck, I can’t come up a description horrific enough. Beastial and malevolent on so many levels, when the rampage begins it gets super gory and disturbing. If this were made into a movie, there are many scenes where I’d be peeking through my fingers, checking to see if it was done yet.

The author outdid himself with this one. Definitely one for mature readers. There are some explicit scenes so twisted I wouldn’t recommend this for a younger audience.

That being said, I enjoyed this one. Yeah, some things got to me, but that’s when you know the author did their job. If they can make you squirm, they’ve hit the mark.

Synopsis

THE LEGEND LIVES
Everyone knows the legend of the Jersey Devil. Some believe it is an abomination of nature, a hybrid winged beast from hell that stalks the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey searching for prey. Others believe it is a hoax, a campfire story designed to scare children. But one man knows the truth . . .

THE DEVIL AWAKES
Sixty years ago, Boompa Willet came face to face with the Devil—and lived to tell the tale. Now, the creature’s stomping grounds are alive once again with strange sightings, disappearances, and worse. After all these years, Boompa must return to the Barrens, not to prove the legend is real but to wipe it off the face of the earth . . .

THE BEAST MUST DIE
It’ll take more than just courage to defeat the Devil. It will take four generations of the Willet clan, a lifetime of survivalist training, and all the firepower they can carry. But timing is critical. A summer music festival has attracted crowds of teenagers. The woods are filled with tender young prey. But this time, the Devil is not alone. The evil has grown into an unholy horde of mutant monstrosities. And hell has come home to New Jersey . . .

I’ve got another one by Peter Tremayne to share today. This is my favorite so far.

Swamp!

  by Peter Tremayne

35613933

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

 My Review

This book had all the elements of a good horror story. It takes place in the swamps of Florida. The author gives you some good guys, some bad guys, some really bad guys, and something monstrous that doesn’t discriminate over its chow. And…there’s a hurricane bearing down on all of them.

See, I told you it had some good stuff. And I really had fun. I must confess, being a southern gal, I like stories set in my area. This is my favorite book by Peter Tremayne. I’ve read several and something about this one stood out. Perhaps it was the character development. I enjoy character driven stories and this had a bunch of them. Plus, it took some time to figure out who were the real bad guys.

With lots of intrigue and all the monster stompin and munching you could wish for, I’d recommend this one. And I feel I should mention the ending. Wait. There is one. It just feels like it’s left open for your interpretation. I chose what to believe and you can too, or you can go with what the author gives you. Either way, its wrapped up.

Synopsis

The only time Pirelli had ever heard the swamplands so deathly still was just before a fire had raged through the area — the animals, by some curious instinct, seemed to know something was wrong.

Caleb Burns, a portly man, was hunting in the forests of Florida with his friend, Jeff Smith.

The manatee, the largest aquatic species of mammal in the swamp country, was highly prized by hunters but for the last twenty years state law had made it illegal to shoot it.

In the sweltering heat, they get more than they bargained for…

A few yards away from them the black, dank waters suddenly began to erupt in a swirling torrent of froth, dwarfing them with its gigantic size.

It gazed at them for a moment from angry, red-veined eyes. An awesome cry echoed deep in its throat from behind razor-sharp incisor teeth, teeth that glinted like a row of stilettos.

For what seemed an eternity it stood like a malevolent statue. Then it swooped, its jaws gnashing viciously…

Where does this blood-thirsty, other-worldly beast come from?

Peter Pirelli, and Everglades National Park Ranger, is trying to discover what this mysterious beast truly is.

With more innocent lives on the line, will he be able to find out before it’s too late?

Black Bayou

The Dark Legacy #1

by Sara Clancy

32717348

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

 My Review

Now this is more like it. The story starts out with an explosive scene and really doesn’t slow down much from there.

Events move swiftly after Marigold’s parents tried to drown her in the bath tub. Turns out they had a huge secret. Once it’s exposed, Marigold has to leave town to avoid those who blame her for what her parents did. Her aunt offers to let her come live with her in New Orleans, so off she goes.

This is where you’d expect things to slow down a bit while the author gives you some filler. But, it doesn’t. Weird and scary things happen as Marigold travels to New Orleans and keep happening once she gets there.

It takes a lot to make my creep-o-meter spike to the red zone. This story had all the bells and whistles I look for in a solid horror story. And I couldn’t have asked for a more genuine main character. Not to mention the setting. New Orleans is popular for vampire and voodoo stories. And it sure worked good for what lurked in the pages here.

Kudos to the author for choosing the perfect title and great cover art for her story. It’s what first drew me to this book and the story lives up to its name.

Not too long or too short, this story was just right for a late night read. The only hitch, it didn’t really have an ending. A lot of questions were left unanswered. I enjoyed this so much I’ll continue with the series, but leaving me hanging with so much still left open was the one thing that kept if from being a 5 star read.

The Curse Of Loch Ness

by Peter Tremayne

35992505

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

My Review

Right from the get go this story had weird vibes. Kind of supernatural.

When Jeannie arrives at the castle she inherited in Scotland, she’s met by a strange woman claiming to be the estate’s housekeeper. She’s rude and kind of creepy. And it sets the tone for what’s to come.

As Jeannie explores the castle and surrounding area, she begins to think something is wrong. Where is everyone? What is wailing below the castle? Why does she feel impending doom?

I liked this book. Almost felt gothic. All gloomy and desolate. And the author gave an interesting angle on the creature. Why it’s there. What it wants.

Not too scary and reads kind of slow in the beginning, but then it gets intriguing. A different kind of Nessie.

Synopsis

Through the gaps in the swirling mist she could make out, perhaps two hundred feet below, something which looked like a rag doll, arms and legs askew at strange angles.

London-raised Jeannie Millbuie has received news that she has unexpected inherited a Scottish castle after the death of her previously unknown relative.

As the only heir of Donald Millbuie, Jeannie travels up to Scotland to take a look at Balmacaan Castle to determine its future.

The castle, which stood on the banks of Loch Ness, along with its odd housekeeper, Mrs. Murdo, and tales of the oddly reclusive previous owner, is a bit in bad shape, but Jeannie is determined to not make a rash decision about its future.

The weird wailing that echoed through the castle and the general eerie atmosphere led to Jeannie asking questions which Mrs. Murdo brushes off, but after exploration of her relatives old quarters reveals a journal, she learns of a horrible truth the Balmacaan Castle and lake is hiding.

Millbuie and the being hiding in Loch Ness have tied fates – and the terrifying and hideous truth will threaten safety and sanity in a race to the end.

The Curse of Loch Ness is a menacing story of the marriage of man, myth and magic in a nightmare world of compulsive horror and evil.

My Review

A beast beneath the waves. Now that sounds interesting.

When men drill too deep into the ocean sea bed they awaken an ancient beast. That’s when it all starts. People disappear. Mysterious attacks are made on the oil rig. And then the beast shows itself. It’s every man for himself when the killing really begins.

I’ve seen several movies and read plenty of books with this story line. Never gets old for me.

And while this one didn’t blow me away, it was a fun creature story. I can’t resist monsters from the deep. And this one is a water demon. Something different for me.

Synopsis

Nicor the mythical water demon…

The monsters straddled the bay, giant black rowers, spurring flame far into the tropical night. From the belly of each a long, sharp proboscis stabbed down into the sea bed…

Oil rigs. Slashing, whirling teeth biting greedily into the ocean floor, sucking deeply of its secrets. Secrets that should have remained forever buried in those peaceful waters.

Oscar Blumen, a drilling superintendent is working aboard one such oil rig – ES 127. A semi-submersible anchored in the Caribbean Sea.

His job, and the job of his fellow employees aboard the oil rig, is to drill a new hole…

For in those Caribbean depths lurked something beyond the feeble powers of man, an abomination that the oilmen’s relentless probing would provoke into a violent frenzy of retribution and surging…

Amid murders, disappearances, police investigations and mysterious attacks on the oil rig itself, the crew must fight for their lives against a seemingly unreal and unbelievable monster…

The Morgow Rises!

Genre: Horror

My Review

Over fishing forces the fishermen of the Cornish village of Bosbradoe to venture further and further out to sea to find fish. On one such trip a man and his son are attacked in their boat. A giant leviathan from the depths of the ocean has risen. It’s angry. It’s hungry. It could be unstoppable.

A quick read, though a bit slow to really get into the meat of the story. I liked the Morgow. An interesting legend and new to me. That’s always intriguing.

Take a good look at the cover. Doesn’t that look like a giant piranha? i would have liked more scenes with the monster but this was still a fun read.

Synopsis

Beware when the Morgow rises;
Lament for the living.
Lament for the unborn.
All things end!

Billy Scawen and his son, Jack are local fisherman of the sleepy coastal, Cornish village of Bosbradoe.

This season, the fishing has been particularly bad.

What could be causing this shortage of fish?

Twenty-five years ago, Billy had skippered a trawler out of Penzance. That had been in the days when the Cornish fishing fleet was a force to be reckoned with.

Without protection for native fishermen, the Cornish seas were being farmed bare by the factory trawlers from upcountry, from France and even from the Soviet Union.

This meant the locals had to go further and further afield just to make their living.

While out to sea, aboard their ship, Ysolt IV, Billy and Jack have no choice but to explore further to find a decent haul.

Suddenly, something hard seemed to smash into the underside of the boat. The waters around them seemed to erupt. Billy Scawen’s mouth dropped open in horror, the briar pipe falling to the boards and smashing to pieces.

Then young Jack Scawen gave one long, piercing shriek of terror…

by Jason Ingolfsland

Genre: Horror

 My Review

This is a very short story. Comes in at around 25 pages.

In those 25 pages, the author sucked me in and spit me out. A bit creeped out. And with a new appreciation for doing research, lots of it, before buying a new home.

A couple looking for their dream home can’t believe they actually found it. The only hitch, someone lives in the basement. He has a years lease. You can’t ask about him. Can’t go down there. Would you pass up your dream home for a measly 365 day mysterious guest?

They should have. Nough said about that.

Reminiscent of episodes you’d see on The Twilight Zone or Tales From The Darkside, this was creepy fun. It had a twisted ending that caught me by surprise. Probably should have seen it coming but the author did a good job of not giving me a clue.

If you’re a fan of twisted plots and short reads, give this one a go.

 My Review

I’m huge on short stories and collections. Especially in the horror genre. I read these over several days.  There are 32 stories and a bonus dystopian one called Ground Zero.

Since these are short stories, it’s hard to talk about them without spoiling things. And there are so many, I can’t pick just a couple as favorites. Some stood out more than others. There was suspense, thrills, and lots of horror in several genres. Even some poetry.

And while I was familiar with some of these authors, there were a bunch of new ones. After trying these quick bites, I’ll be checking them out to see what else they have to offer. That’s the great thing about collections like this.

Tis the season for scares….for me that’s year round, and I recommend you grab this collection.

Loch Ness Revenge

by Hunter Shea

32861019

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

 My Review

I’ve watched a lot of movies and read a lot of books about the Loch Ness Monster and couldn’t wait to see how Hunter spun this legend.

Your thrown right into the thick of things from the first chapter. Poor twins, Austin and Natalie, witness the horrific attack and death of their parents by a creature risen from the depths of Loch Ness. Some twenty years later the twins set out to destroy the creature. Little do they know it’s not just one beast that swims the depths, waiting for hapless victims to feed upon. The legend is real. It wants revenge. And it has the numbers to tip the scale in its favor.

I love the water. I love the smell, the sound of the waves lapping at the shore, the feel of weightlessness while swimming. What I don’t love is what lives in it. The slimy weeds that brush against your body. The darting shadows that you can’t quite make out. The things that shift under the sand when you step on it. It all creeps me out. And that was before I watched Jaws. I no longer swim in the ocean or lakes. I have a pool.

This story has tons of atmosphere and great visual writing. I’ve never been to the Loch, but I could easily see it. And I could imagine the ripples on it’s surface as something large swims below.

And as per the norm, the author doesn’t spare any of his characters. This worried me since I became quite fond of a few of them, so don’t get too attached. It is a monster story after all. Many will become bloody bits of chum.

I knew Hunter would give us a Nessie like no other. I’d love to see this as a movie. To see what the author describes.

Make sure to give yourself plenty of time before you starting reading this book. Hunter wastes little time getting to the meat of his story. It’s all out mayhem once it begins and a bumpy ride to the end.

Skitter

The Hatching #2

by Ezekiel Boone

30753752

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre:  Horror

My Review

I really enjoyed The Hatching so it was a no brainer to continue with the series.

Everyone breathes a sigh of relief. The spiders have died. Could it be over? Is it time to rebuild and get back to life as they know it? Not so fast.

Scientists and experts have been studying the spiders and the egg sacs discovered hidden across the planet. They find some horrifying indications that the worst is yet to come. When it all starts falling apart again it’s every man for themselves as countries are devastated and drastic measures are taken to contain the threat.

I was super excited for this book. I met some great characters that survived the first book and wanted to know what would happen to them. One group in particular, hiding in a luxury fall out shelter, were among my favorites. I could almost see them and had to laugh at some of things they said and did. And they had a dog too. Always love the furry companions. And worrying if it would be eaten by spiders sure added to my worries about the stories outcome.

Even though the book had me jumping from one place to the next and one scenario to the next, it wasn’t hard to follow and I enjoyed the scientific parts. The only thing lacking was spiders. I wish there were more attacks. Sure, there were some, but I missed the endless hordes of spiders creeping and crawling, unstoppable and hungry.

I didn’t realize the series didn’t end with Skitter. There’s an ending of sorts but lots more to be told. I’ll be waiting for what comes next.

Genre: Horror

My Review

I’m sure many of you bought them. Those sea monkeys advertised in comic books. I did. And so did a couple of boys. They clip out the order form, fill it out, insert their dollar bill and send it off. When the order arrives and their freeze dried pets don’t hatch and start to stink, they dump them in the sewer.

Yep, you guessed it. Time passes. The creatures hatch. They grow. They crawl out of the sewers. Horrific in ways unimaginable. And then they feed. There goes the neighborhood.

I can always count on Hunter to make me laugh and squirm at the same time. It’s bloody good fun on the level of B- movies. It doesn’t have to be spectacular writing. The author doesn’t have to have his ducks all in a row. He just lets it rip and rip and rip.

If you haven’t tried any of Hunter’s books before, this would be a perfect first read. Not too short or too long and packed full of action.

Optical Delusion

Mail Order Massacre #2

by Hunter Shea

34600023

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

I remember those silly ads in the back of comic books. I actually bought those sea monkeys. And if I’d come across an ad about X-ray vision glasses, I’d probably have bought those too. When Martin Blackstone tries on his son’s silly glasses he doesn’t expect anything to really happen. Imagine his surprise when they work. He can see under peoples clothes, and more. And the more he dons the glasses the more he sees. Until he sees too much. And the glasses won’t come off.

Who says you have to like the main character to enjoy a book? I’ve read many a good story where I didn’t and had fun seeing how bad things could get for them. Martin isn’t really likeable to begin with. You’ll come to loathe him when the changes begin. When the glasses he scoffed at turn him into something terrible. It made me wonder if Martin might have shown his hidden ugliness in some other way if he’d never put on those glasses. All that evil couldn’t come from out of the blue could it? It had to be there, under the surface, waiting for a chance to come out and play, right?

This is such a fun series. I really enjoyed Just Add Water, the first in Hunter’s Mail Order Massacre series.

While this one didn’t wow me as much as the first book, it was still worth the read. The author gave me the gory fun I’d come to expect.
