They Rise

My Review

After reading some other books by this author, I knew one thing about his newest release. It would be crammed with action, suspense, and horror. He didn’t waste any time dropping me into the water and using me as chum for his shark swarm.

Some kind of new shark, or maybe it’s a prehistoric one, has appeared in the waters of the Bermuda Triangle. As their numbers grow, along with their size, the victims rise at a staggering rate. Think you’re safe in a boat? Nope. They can just leap aboard and snatch you, or sink the boat and then snatch you.

It’s a race to find out where they come from and to stop them before they spread across the globe.

I’ve always  been fascinated by monsters from the deep. After Jaws, I could never look at the ocean the same way again. I’ve been deep sea fishing and seen huge sharks. And I’ve been at the beach and had to get out of the water because of a sighting. It’s well known that when swimming in the warm Gulf waters where I live, there are sharks swimming with me all the time. Just because you don’t see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Needless to say, after reading horror stories about sharks, and watching plenty of movies, I now have a pool and swim on shore.

The sharks in this book are terrifying. They attack in numbers, range from big to huge, and don’t let a boat get in their way. Once you’re on the menu, they won’t stop.

And something else this author does, or should I say doesn’t do. He doesn’t spare his characters. At any given time, they could become chum. So don’t get too attached.

Nonstop action, suspense, and carnage keep you glued to the story right to the end. At around 160 pages, it’s not that long. I sure could’ve read more.

Synopsis

Some call them ghost sharks, the oldest and strangest looking creatures in the sea.

Marine biologist Brad Whitley has studied chimaera fish all his life. He thought he knew everything about them. He was wrong. Warming ocean temperatures free legions of prehistoric chimaera fish from their methane ice suspended animation. Now, in a corner of the Bermuda Triangle, the ocean waters run red. The 400 million year old massive killing machines know no mercy, destroying everything in their path. It will take Whitley, his climatologist ex-wife and the entire US Navy to stop them in the bloodiest battle ever seen on the high seas.

No Such Thing As Werewolves

Deathless: Book One

by Chris Fox

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

The title alone would make me want to read this book. Then there’s that frightful cover art.

Knew this was going to be good. But it was chock full of surprising twists. I thought I knew what was inside the pyramid. Nope. Kind of wrong there. And I thought this would be kind of predictable. Way wrong there.

Great characters. Too many to talk about individually. Good guys. Bad guys. Important secondary characters that do their part to flesh out the story. And those from the pyramid. Well, I can’t tell you much about them. But loved em. And something else, dark, evil. Can’t tell you anything about that or I’d spoil things.

I’m trying to categorize a genre but I can’t. Some science fiction and fantasy. Maybe a little mythology. Definitely suspense and mystery. And a healthy dose of horror.

A pyramid is discovered in Peru. It predates anything ever discovered on Earth. Teams rush to the scene, eager to to see what it hides inside.

Nothing could prepare them for what happens next.

Sound like something you’d like? I recommend you go grab a copy. It may take a short time to get to the action, but once it starts, you won’t be released until the end.

One thing. The ending. It’s a humdinger. Not what I was expecting, but, hey, I’m the reader, not the writer. I go where he takes me.

My Review

I read the first book in this series and loved it, so when I saw this boxed set for the first three books on Amazon, I had to grab it.

It’s kind of hard to review these separately as it would have to contain some spoilers, so I’m going to tell you about it like it’s one book.

It literally does start on a dark and stormy night. The blizzard has arrived, the power is staring to fail, and the residents of the town, those that haven’t left yet, are free game for the creatures. Doors don’t keep them out. Guns don’t seem to do more than slow them down for a bit. And the dark and snow work to their advantage.

I love a scary good creature story and the ones offered up by the author are so bad, so cunning and vicious, so hungry. And they are everywhere. They’ve been waiting for this.

Another thing I like is when the elements work for the monsters and against the humans. What could be worse than the snow storm of the century. These werewolves knew it was coming and planned accordingly. Some were already living there, and some came with the storm.

Imagine how horrible it would be. First, you witness something so horrific and unbelievable. Then you get past the fear and shock, and accept that the creatures exist. Now what?

Well, you round up anything you can use for weapons and enter the dark, cold night. You try to drive out of town, struggling through snow drifts and hoping you don’t slide off the road.  You see some people being attacked by the creatures. Do you stop to help? Probably not the best idea. Too many of them and you’ll probably just end up torn to pieces. You’re cut off from the outside world and your fear and doubt escalate. Is this happening everywhere?

So on you go. Seeking shelter and safety, and the things out there are following you. This is there time.

There was a lot of suspense and carnage to keep this horror fan happy. The suspense was edgy, and there were some good surprises. Even when I knew what was coming, it was fun reading how it happened.

This is a series I would only recommend you read in order. The books all start pretty much where the last one left off.

Books four and five are out now, so I’ll be grabbing them too.

My Review

He waited until the zombie messed with Rudolph to take him out. No one messed with his Christmas display. The loud crack of his gun brought more and he took care of them too. Then all was quiet again.

Relaxing in his living room, enjoying the lighted Christmas tree, the silence is shattered by the doorbell. Mike can’t believe his eyes. It’s four zombie carolers, singing songs. Or grunting them. Once he quits laughing he quickly dispatches them too. Their noise would bring others.

The loud knocking on his door is welcome. He’s been waiting for Jim and Fred. He needs them if his plan is to succeed.

The plan. Fight a way through the zombies to reach the mall. There, they will grab goodies for the kids in their neighborhood.  Everyone is struggling to make it through the apocalypse and the winter is brutal. A little something on Christmas morning for each child would bring smiles to their sweet faces. Would help them forget, for a time, what was happening outside.

Fred and Jim had taken some convincing, but when Mike explained his plan and they realized he’d do it alone if he had to, they were in one hundred percent.

As gruesome as this story got, it also cracked me up. Those zombie carolers were too funny. And the zombie shoppers, shuffling in and out of the mall with their packages, I could just imagine that scene, and laughed out loud. Nobody told the zombies they couldn’t have a Christmas.

I really liked Mike. He didn’t hesitate to take out the zombies yet kept his sense of humor. And by selecting the only other single men in the neighborhood, he didn’t risk leaving a family without a father and provider.

I think these three gents got as much joy as the children from their plan. It must have brought a small measure of hope and joy to them, playing Santa when the world was falling apart.

While I was writing my review, I happened to glance up at my Christmas tree, and what I saw cracked me up again. Sitting nestled on a branch was a little zombie mummy I had been given. I swear it winked at me.

We are excited to announce that the young adult novel Poet Anderson…Of Nightmares by Tom DeLonge and Suzanne Young is now available for sale! Welcome to my tour stop, be sure to stop by the tour page for the full schedule.

From the critically acclaimed transmedia project Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker, comes one of the most anticipated collaborations in YA literature this year: a thrilling, edge of your seat story written by award-winning musician, producer and director Tom DeLonge and New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Young.

Poet Anderson…Of Nightmares follows the epic journey of two orphan brothers, Jonas and Alan, who are Lucid Dreamers. After a tragic car accident lands Alan in a coma, Jonas sets out into the Dream World in an attempt to find his brother and wake him up. What he discovers instead is an entire shared consciousness where fear comes to life as a snarling beast called a Night Terror, and a creature named REM is bent on destruction and misery, devouring the souls of the strongest dreamers to get closer to the Waking World. With the help of a Dream Walker—a guardian of the dreamscape, Jonas must face his fears, save his brother, and become who he was always meant to be: Poet Anderson.

Poet Cover Sept 17 2016

 My Review

Alan and Jonas are brothers, orphans. They have only each other. They’re also Lucid Dreamers, able to move in dream worlds. When an accident lands Alan in a coma, Jonas must enter the dream world to find his brother and wake him up.

He’ll have to face a monstrous creature, his very own Night Terror, and REM, an evil being bent on entering the real world.

I enjoyed the names of some of the beings. Night Terrors and REM (rapid eye movement) are both sleep conditions and great choices. Caused some “I see” moments for me.

Jonas starts out fumbling in the dream world but catches on quick. Thrown into dangerous situations, he adapts. Save his brother, the girl he loves, the dream walkers, and the world, a heavy burden rests on his young shoulders.

At first glance the cover looks creepy. Take another look. See all of those images. I give five stars on the cover alone. So creative.

Action galore. It never slows down. Between the dream world and the waking one, you are pulled along at a face pace.

It feels a bit sci-fi, a bit horror, a bit action and adventure, and all thrilling. I can honestly say this story is something totally new for me. Not even sure how to tag it.

I have the hard cover edition and it is awesome. The cover art leaps out at you and the book comes with a music CD. I listened to it while reading and it really lent atmosphere and excitement.

A great collaboration brings you an amazing reading experience.

Vampire at Christmas - High Resolution

My Review

I reviewed this a while ago. Since then Anthony has done some revisions. A little more of this and a little more of that and it’s even better and I already gave it 5 Stars before.

The best thing is he gave his vampire a name.

Introducing Talan Gawayn. I love the name. Sounds like something from a long ago era. A proper vampire name.

Now here’s my review for the earlier edition.

The story opens in a tomb. All is calm. All is bright. The little Christmas tree in the corner casts a dazzling display reflecting off of the large coffin.

If you put your ear right up against the coffin, you might hear Jimmy Buffet singing Margaritaville. This handsome vampire loves being a vampire, loves Christmas, and is a fan of the southern artist and has been to many of his concerts. His powers enable him to fly to any location and blend into the shadows to enjoy the the shows.

He’s been waiting 364 days for this night and he grabs his bag of goodies and heads out. But first he must feed.

The beginning is different now. It opens with how Talan became a vampire and it’s a chilling scene.

When he was a new vampire he killed at random. But after many years and witnessing the miracle of Christmas, the warmth and cheer of it, he became more selective. Only killing those who deserved it.

I am amazed at the power of this character with the story being just over 20 pages.

He coldly stalks and consumes his prey, yet he’s also gleeful and excited, like a child. He really gets into the Christmas spirit and spreads hope and joy. Not to his prey, of course, but to those who are in need.

I live in the south and have seen Jimmy Buffet in concert. Been to his restaurant. Met him a few times.  While I was reading this story, I hummed Margaritaville and thought, this vampire would like it here.

Excerpt

Talan Gawayn became a vampire in the 15th century on a cold, starry, full-moon night just after the first big snow of November. He was walking a less traveled path, on his way home from seeing his fiancé, whom he planned to marry the following spring, when three men stepped out of the shadows to rob him. He fought them at first, but they soon overpowered him, beat him ruthlessly, laughing as they did it, drunk and looking for someone to rob. They had found it in Talan who was so hopelessly in love he hadn’t seen them sneak up on him.

While he lay there in the snow dying from his injuries, one eye shut and swollen, the other able to see only a blurry vision, he thought he saw something, something moving quick and fast. The men who had beaten him were counting out their stolen money when this thing attacked them. It tore through their flesh, ripped out their throats savagely; and didn’t just drain the robbers of their precious blood, but this thing seemed to almost be bathing in it while it fed.

Talan tried to stay focused, tried to see what this thing was, but his will gave out and his good eye closed. He passed out into an injured slumber.

My Review

I’m always looking for something just a little bit different, a little bit outside the norm. So when the author offered me his book to read, I hopped over to check it out on Goodreads. I liked the synopsis, and the title and cover were intriguing. Seemed to fit the bill as new and different. I had my fingers crossed.

I’ve got to hand it to the author. I was looking for something outside the norm and he delivered. The creatures, beings, things, not humans, are original. I’ve yet to read anything like them. They are kind of vampires. Are nearly immortal. But they don’t crave blood. They need something else, a different fluid from us. And it’s no quick bite and suck, thank you very much. They must subdue us, then the drinking takes a long time. It’s a slow process.

The story is narrated by the main character. You never learn his name. Really don’t need to. You’ll know him inside and out by the end.

As for Lillian, she’s not someone you’ll like. I don’t think you’re supposed to. I found her wishy washy, and dangerous. She has lots of secrets and keeps her victim seduced with vague promises. Those promises change to threats when he pushes for more from her. Now he must choose his fate.

This story grew on me. I didn’t really like either character, even at the end. But the writing was strong, the plot compelling me to keep going. The author drew me further in, teased me with promises as much as Lillian did.

This would be a great movie. Most of the scenes take place in small bedrooms occupied by the main characters. Their mode of travel is strategic. They can disappear quickly that way. The atmosphere is almost gothic. I pictured damp, foggy conditions, adding to the feelings of foreboding. Kind of raises those hairs on the back of your neck.

An emotional journey as well as a horrific one, I still think about it. I wonder, if the man did things differently, would he find what he was looking for? Would Lillian?

An intense psychological experience. It stays with you.

Synopsis

Plagued by insomnia, the narrator walks the city looking for something, for someone to bring him peace. Then he finds Lillian, the puzzling, seductive stranger — or does she find him? They are instantly drawn to each other in intimate and unexpected ways: each of them finding what they need, at least for awhile. But before they get too comfortable, Lillian alters their unspoken rules: first with an offer, then with a threat.

What starts as a quiet, intimate testing of boundaries, becomes a sprawling journey from a snowbound city, across the Atlantic Ocean, to sun-bleached routes through Greece. All the while retaining the intimacy of a one-room apartment. Our narrator changes his life in unimaginable ways but still needs more. He needs answers, he needs intimacy, he needs to feel human, but Lillian is an unhelpful teacher, keeping both her past and their future closely guarded secrets.

Leech is an unsettling, poetic, relationship tale riding a thin line of the supernatural.

How much can you give and how much can you take before it’s too much?

A funny excerpt!

December the 22nd

I was sitting in my living room reading a Stephen King book – “Duma Key.” The doorbell rang. I grabbed my gun and walked over to it. I looked out the peep hole as a zombie shambled down off the porch. There were four of them out there. All zombied up, rotting, bloody, fresh from the grave, and they were all dressed like carolers and holding caroling books. One had it upside down, two had theirs sideways, and the smart one, who rang the doorbell, had his right side up.

Synopsis
