My Review

Even though this is the second book in the series and I hadn’t read the first, I easily came to know the characters and their roles in each other’s lives. It’s a rather large cast as Rissi and Mason are part of the Coast Guard team assigned to investigate a questionable death aboard an oil rig. Some evidence points to murder and an environmental activist group falls under suspicion. Or it could be someone connected to the rig with their own hidden agenda.

The investigation has barely begun before it becomes apparent it was no accident. The helicopter transporting Rissi and Mason to the rig crashes and it appears to have been sabotage. In such an isolated location, with so many suspects and a hurricane looming closer, it’s a race to solve the case before more people die.

I had an enjoyable time trying to figure out what was really happening and who was behind it. Rissi and Mason quickly became my favorite characters. They shared the same scars from growing up in an abusive foster home and lean on each other as things get dangerous. I liked all of the other characters too. Each had baggage and something to offer and I wanted so much for them to be safe and find happiness.

This had a mystery or two that was not easily solved and evolving relationships that kept me intrigued and hopeful. It was so easy to read and I finished it in one sitting. And I’d definitely like to continue with the series and see how these characters get along in life.

Synopsis:

When an accident claims the life of an oil-rig worker on the first drilling platform off the North Carolina coast, Coast Guard investigators Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers are sent to take the case. Tensions surrounding the oil rig are high and the death has everyone on edge. Environmental activists are threatening to do whatever it takes to stop the structure from being completed, while rumors are being whispered about ancient curses surrounding this part of the ocean.

Mounting evidence shows the death may not have been an accident at all. Was he killed by one of the activists or, perhaps more frighteningly, a member of his own crew? Rissi and Mason have to sort through not only a plethora of suspects, but also their own past and attraction to each other.

Just as the case seems like it’ll break open, worse news arrives. A tropical storm has turned their way and soon they’re cut off from any rescue–and right where the killer wants them. It’s a race to discover his identity before he eliminates the threat they pose.

Chapter One

Late September Thirty-eight miles off North Carolina’s coast Greg Barnes clinked along the grated metal steps, his boot heels rasping with each shuffle as he headed topside for a much-needed breath of smoke. Thrusting the door open with a resounding creak, he stepped out into the night air. A litany of protestors’ chants mimicked the shrill whining of cicadas. He glanced at his watch. 1930. Didn’t those eco-nuts ever give it a rest? As if the cursed rig wasn’t enough—they had the dang relentless protestors going practically day and night. Exhaling, he rubbed his thumb along the smooth surface of the tarnished gold lighter in his pocket. His tight muscles seized, making his movements stiff. He shook his head. Those people needed to get a life. Edging around the far corner of the main separator facility, he pressed his back against the structure’s cool outer wall. Generators whirred across from him, finally drowning out the clatter. He scanned his surroundings and exhaled in relief. Finally, alone. His leg twitched. Just one drag . . . maybe two. It’d been an awful day, and that was the gentleman’s way of putting it. With unsteady hands, he pulled the plastic-wrapped pack from his shirt pocket. It crinkled beneath his hold and the sweet scent of tobacco wafted beneath his nose. He tamped the cigarette in his palm and slid it between his cracked lips. Just one drag. Tugging the lighter from his pocket, he flipped it open, then rolled the pad of his thumb across the ignitor. A spark flashed and fire roared, hissing over him in a sizzling cascade of torment.

Chapter Two

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina Rissi Dawson sat at the long table on Dockside’s waterfront deck, gaping at Mason Rogers. He turned to look at her, his green eyes illuminated in the bright pole lights lining the wooden structural beams. She averted her eyes as heat rushed up her throat, spreading across her cheeks. He’d caught her staring again. Embarrassment drenched her. It’d been three days since his arrival, and she still couldn’t wrap her mind around the fact he was actually sitting next to her. The boy she’d had the biggest crush on as a teen was back in her life. And on her Coast Guard Investigative Service team. He handed her the basket of hush puppies the restaurant served instead of bread to start everyone off. His hand brushed hers with the movement, and her heart fluttered. “Thanks,” she said, keeping her gaze fixed on the red basket as she pulled two balls of fried cornmeal from it. She plopped the still-warm puppies onto the round plate to the right of her Coke. Get it together, girl! The whir of a boat’s motor dropping to an idle sounded over the deck’s edge. A teen jumped out of the white outboard and onto the pier, tying her up to the cleat. Rissi loved living in a place with a boat drive-thru. Noah raised his glass of iced tea. “Everyone . . .” The team lifted their glasses in response to their boss’s prompting. Noah dipped his chin. “Welcome, Mason. Happy to have you on board.” The team clinked their glasses together, even Caleb who sat brooding to her left. Observant as he was, there was no chance he missed the way she looked at Mason. In recent months, he’d developed feelings for her, so it wasn’t surprising he’d bristled at Mason’s arrival—especially after learning she and Mason shared a past, though he didn’t know the half of it. Only that they spent time in a children’s home together for a handful of months as teens. The opening riff of “Sweet Home Alabama” emanated from Noah’s jean pocket. He hitched up as he extracted his phone. “Rowley,” he answered. “Yes?” Standing, he headed down the ramp toward the restaurant’s pier. “Rockfish tacos,” the waitress said, placing the plate in front of Rissi. The sweet, tropical scent of the mango slaw swirled in the air. The waitress handed out plate after plate to each of them, setting Noah’s burger at his spot while he continued to pace the pier. Caleb bit into his Carolina BBQ pork sandwich, the scent of vinegar wafting in the night’s gentle breeze. Finn Walker did the same with his crab cake sandwich. He and Noah, who was from Maryland, had argued for months over which state had the best crab cake. Finn had been convinced it was North Carolina, right up until Noah had crab cakes flown in fresh from Jimmy’s Famous Seafood in Baltimore. It took two bites for Finn to concede the win. “Sorry about that, folks,” Noah said, retaking his seat. “Everything okay?” Emmy Thorton asked. Rissi looked forward to seeing the quirky angel every day at the station. “Rissi, Mason.” Noah lifted his chin in their direction. “I’ve got an assignment for you.” Her and Mason? They’d worked a case his first day on the team, but Finn had joined them for most of the investigation. This would be the two of them . . . alone. A mixture of elation and fear sifted through her. “Great.” Mason set down his lemonade. “We’ve got a death out on the Dauntless.” “The offshore oil platform?” Mason asked, swiping a drop of lemonade from his bottom lip. Stop staring, girl. So he’s jaw-dropping gorgeous. So you share a past. Still, staring is plain rude. Despite not having a mother to teach her, Rissi knew or, at least had come to learn, her manners. Noah laid his napkin across his lap. “You two need to determine if the death was an accident or if foul play was involved. Helo is leaving from Textra Oil’s copter hub in forty-five. I need you both on it.” Mason pushed back from the table. “No problem.” “Great,” Noah said. “You’ll be joining the head of operations, a commercial diver, and the deceased’s replacement on the company copter.” Rissi took one last bite of her taco before setting it down. She dabbed the corner of her lips with a napkin. “They aren’t wasting any time in replacing the deceased.” “The deceased’s name is Greg Barnes. I talked to the head of operations, Bob Stanton, and he said they needed to replace him ASAP.” “Must be an important position.” She reached for her glass and took a final sip. “You’d think,” Noah said. “But Bob said the main reason they need to replace him fast is they’ve been working with a skeleton crew.” Mason’s brows pinched as he stood. “Why?” “Several guys didn’t show up for their three-week rotation transport out,” Noah said, popping a fry in his mouth. “I know why they didn’t show up for that copter ride out there.” Tom Murphy leaned toward them from his table situated to their right. “Why?” Mason asked, moving around to the back of Rissi’s chair. He held it out for her as she stood. She glanced over her shoulder at him and smiled. “Thanks.” He nodded. Tom, one of Wrightsville’s most colorful fishermen, crooked his index finger, drawing them in. “That rig’s cursed.” “Cursed?” Caleb chuckled. “You can’t be serious?” Tom waggled his finger. “It’s no laughing matter, young man.” “I’m sure it’s a good story, Tom,” Rissi said. No reason not to be polite. “But I’m afraid we’ve got to catch a copter ride.” Tom shrugged and turned back to his food. “It’s your lives at stake.” “What do you mean?” she asked before they passed his table, unable to stem her curiosity. “You’ll see.” He smiled, his right incisor missing. “Henry’s curse is real.” “Henry?” Why was she letting herself get sucked into this? Tom let out a high-pitched chuckle. “Oh, you’ll learn all about Henry.” “Shall we?” Mason said, gesturing to the wooden ramp leading down to the gravel parking lot. Excusing themselves, they moved down the ramp. Mason leaned in. He smelled of the ocean and warm spice. He whispered, “Did that guy seriously just cackle?” She nodded, strangely curious about the old man’s ghost story. “I thought people only did that on Scooby-Doo.” She let out a slip of laughter. “I wouldn’t be laughing,” Tom called after them as they rounded the ramp on his side of the deck. “You two be careful out there, you hear? It’s a dangerous place to be. Just ask the men on board.” *** Excerpt from The Crushing Depths by Dani Pettrey. Copyright 2020 by Dani Pettrey. Reproduced with permission from Dani Pettrey. Sasquatch Onslaught

Genre: Horror

My Review

I’m a huge fan of horror books that have creatures running amok. Especially the big hairy ones. What could be more thrilling then some genetically altered Sasquatch, a military train full of prisoner’s and a snow storm that derails them with no hope for rescue. I was rubbing my hands with fiendish glee.

Yep, this was action packed. Once the train derails, it’s every man or woman for themselves. They get separated into small groups and the altered Sasquatch’s hunt them down, ripping and tearing their way through the poor victims. Well, some I felt sorry for. Other’s I would have pushed in front of me while I ran away.

If I had a check list, every box would have been marked. It was a fast read. The characters were believable. The creatures were horrific. The setting was a character in itself. And the plot was strong and suspenseful. I really didn’t know if anyone would make it out alive. I held my breath with each new attack. And there were plenty.

And the cover. How cool is that! It’s perfect for the story and gives me the heebie jeebies.

Never a dull moment with this one.

My Review

Wow. I started reading this and couldn’t put it down. I’m always interested in books about archaeological adventures and this one had such a wicked title and mysterious description, I just knew it was gong to be fun.

There’s quite the cast of characters, and some had differing agendas. I had a feeling things were going to go sideways and they did.The author did a great job of filling in the background on his characters in just the right places in the story.

And there’s also something very strange about the dig. The deeper they go, the stranger and more dangerous it gets. So many things happened and I kept picturing them in my mind. Some times I had to stop and ponder what I would do too. It’s easy to think you’d be calm and cool, but I would probably be the ninny who goes running off screaming into the dark to meet a sticky end. LOL

I’ve enjoyed some of Brian’s other books and this was just as thrilling. And I’m still thinking about the ending. It’s a surprising twist.

“Here we go! Carr is a master storyteller who always offers a plot full
of twists and turns, a bit of humor to offset the dark, and a unique
cast of characters. In Killer Deadline that
cast includes – handsome Ryan, her first love (who is now her
step-brother); a mysterious social media friend called Nerdy Guy; Elmo, a
super smart dog, a boxer, she rescued who has become asocial media star
and has a penchant for cleaning; a TV station full of suspicious
employees; and more.”This book is a wonderful read to pick up at the end of a long day. It
truly is a “cozy murder mystery.”  I promise, it’ll draw you in right
from page one and keep you turning the pages until you reach the very
last page. I can’t wait for the second book in this series.” – Marilyn R. Wilson, Olio by Marilyn

My Review

I’ve read and loved a bunch of Lauren’s books and was excited to get my hands on this cozy mystery. I know she can bring her characters to life. I know she can sprinkle some fun romance along with those characters. I know she can give the critters in her stories as much of a role as her human ones. And I know she can give me a cast of characters to keep me on my toes and a mystery that keeps me clueless. And now she’s going to do all that with a cozy mystery series!

Nikki returns to her small home town in Pennsylvania to take over the family news station now that her mother is retiring. Her skills as an investigative reporter will come in handy as she steps into her new role. What won’t be so easy is facing the one she let get away, a nemesis with a grudge and the cold case murder of her father many years ago.

Like with most of her books, Lauren doesn’t give you just one mystery to solve, she gives you several. I had an idea who did the first murder but was caught completely by surprise when her father’s killer was revealed. Then there’s nerdyguy, someone Nikki befriended on the internet. I figured out who he was and what he was up to fairly early on and couldn’t wait to see Nikki’s reaction when she finally figured it out too.

And as with her other books, Lauren brings in a nonhuman character that easily challenges the human characters for the spotlight. Elmo, Nikki’s boxer, is famous. Everyone wants their picture taken with him. He does these incredible things. And you don’t even have to ask him. I easily pictured Elmo making the bed and loading the dishwasher. Gotta love a dog that enjoys doing housework.

From first sentence to last, I had a blast with Killer Deadline and I am excited for more in this series.

I finally started The Murderbot Diaries and here is what I thought.

All Systems Red

The Murderbot Diaries #1

by Martha Wells

Genre: Science Fiction

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve been excited to read this series as many people I know enjoyed it and recommended it to me. And now I know why.

A team of scientists, along with their required android, or SecUnit as it’s called, are conducting survey tests on a remote planet. Should be easy. But when another team is massacred, they realize they’re next and they aren’t prepared.

Murderbot is what it calls itself. And when you learn it’s history, the name is apt. It was easy to like Muderbot. It’s got a lot of human qualities, like sarcasm, introspection and wanting to know who it is. I was curious too. It’s not a sexbot, so no sexual organs, I was curious about what face it wore under the armor. Did it look like a man or a woman? I was left wondering and hope future stories reveal that to me. And it’s very human in another way, spending hours watching the future’s version of a Netflix show. I’d binge this series if Netflix offered it. Don’t let this fool you about the SecUnit. It’s not a combat model, but when required, it goes at it’s enemy no hold’s barred, risking injury to inflict the most damage.

What made this read real for me was that it’s always assumed that with the advanced technology that enables us to travel in space, we come to expect it to “look” advanced. For the ships and all the other things that come with it to be like shiny new toys and everything works right. Not so here. It’s the same as always, cheaper is better and cutting corners is always the first choice. Which causes quite a few problems for the crew and for Murderbot.

I had so much fun with All Systems Red and am already reading the next book. The ending here left me so curious. What does the future hold for Muderbot?

Synopsis

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.

But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.

But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it’s up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

Conquest

Genre: Horror

My Review

This book is chock full of action and some bloody good horror.

Imagine a wildfire threatening your town. It’s approaching fast and it’s time to get out. But, a group of strangers aren’t having any of it, They see the fire as an opportunity to unleash their inner beast. To rend, tear and feed. They’re shapeshifters with long sharp claws and very big teeth.

As with most horror stories, there’s the character’s you want to survive, those that you really hope don’t and the ones doing all the deciding. It all adds fuel to the fire as the flames approach and each has to decide what side they’re on. It sure made for a super fast and wild read.

This would be such fun as a movie and I had a blast. I’ll definitely be watching for more from the author.

Crossing in Time
Between Two Evils Book 1
by D.L. Orton
Genre: Action-Adventure, Dystopian, Time Travel, Love Story
.

My Review

In the beginning…. Isabel and Diego, ill-fated lovers, find each other again. The two lovers are separated once more when a strange artifact crashes in the city, destroying buildings and killing many. Reunited again, they have no idea their love is what will save the world.

I’m not much into time travel, but this book is so much more and I’m rethinking that now. There’s romance, science fiction, and suspense. I easily cast aside reality and lost myself in the story of Isabel and Diego. Their love for each other is powerful and I very much wanted a happy ending for them. But time isn’t set in stone, and their future and that of Mankind’s is uncertain.

Many people believe time travel will become possible. I’m not so sure about that. And not sure we should do so if it is does become possible. This story is about having no choice. A sweeping romance, filled with possibilities, heartache, suspense, and hope.

The chapters are short, keeping the reading pace fast. And I enjoyed the illustrations at the beginning of each one as they connect with the events. Even the seashell in the spelling of the title on the cover has a hidden meaning.

The beginning swiftly pulls you in. The plot deepens and the characters emerge. And as you draw near to the conclusion, you’re gripped in a vise of suspense that brings tears to your eyes, fearing and hoping for what comes last.

The past isn’t over, it’s an opening. The future isn’t hidden, it’s a trap.
If she ever wants to see him again, she’ll have to take the risk…
Publishers Weekly Starred Review: “Funny, Romantic & Harrowing!”
When offered a one-way trip to the past, Iz sacrifices everything for a chance to change her dystopian future—and see her murdered lover one last time.
After a perilous journey through a black hole, she wakes up on a tropical beach, buck naked and mortally wounded—but twenty years younger! With only hours to live, she must convince an enraptured but skeptical twenty-something guy to fix their future relationship and thereby save the planet (no one is quite sure why.)
But it’s easier said than done, as success means losing him to a brainy, smart-mouthed bombshell (her younger self), and that’s a heartbreaker, save the world or not.
Across the infinite expanse of space and time, love endures…
(Unfortunately, it’s not going to be enough.)
FALL INTO THIS EDGY, action-packed, darkly comedic, dystopian love story, and be prepared to encounter a finicky time machine, a mysterious seashell, and a very clever dog (some sex, some swearing, some violence, but no vampires and absolutely no ditzes.)
Content Warning!
This book contains material that may be disturbing to some, and in movie form, would be rated NC-17 for strong language, nudity, sexual situations, and violence (including attempted sexual assault, abduction, intense danger, miscarriage, confinement, a pandemic, religious fanaticism (Christian), government malevolence, and death).

Lost Time
Between Two Evils Book 2
From the award-winning author D. L. ORTON comes book two in the Between Two Evils Series…
If someone took everything you live for, how far would you go to get it back?
When a faulty time machine deposits Diego at the top of a towering evergreen, he knows he’s in the wrong place—but has no idea he’s also in the wrong time. Naked and shivering in the primeval forest, he attempts to climb down—but slips, whacks his head on a branch, and tumbles into oblivion.
He awakens inside a darkened room, crippled and disheartened, and must come to grips with the realization that he is marooned in a bleak alternate future. In this universe, what remains of the human race is trapped inside a handful of aging biodomes. With his mission failed, his world destroyed, and the one woman he loves dead, he can find no reason to go on living.
Except Lani, the emotionally scarred doctor who must put Diego’s broken body back together, refuses to let him die, and as Diego heals, their relationship becomes… complicated. He struggles to let go of the past but is unable to get Isabel out of his head—or his heart. Just when it seems he may be able to find some measure of happiness in a world teetering on the edge of extinction…
Another note arrives from his past: Isabel is alive—but not for long. Find the time machine, and go home before it’s too late…

My Review

I read and liked a few of the previous books in the Bulwark series and I enjoyed this one too.

Dayna was labeled white trash and promiscuous as long as she could remember. Her mother’s reputation shadowed her whole life. I couldn’t help but hope for something good in her life despite her being her own worst enemy. I do tend to cheer for the underdog.

When strange things start happening in the small town, Dayna’s life becomes much more complicated. Buried secrets come to light and she meets a special someone who might change everything.

While the story was over before I was ready, it sure kept me glued to the pages. I had a really good time.

My Review

I read Bulwark, the first book in this series and really liked it. The plot was dark and mysterious, with genuine characters. It’s where I was introduced to JB so I guess I was expecting The Knowing to feel similar.

As JB pondered the past and his love for his wife, Ellie, I got this warm feeling inside. I realized the plot was going to be about life, paths and choices. All the best ingredients for a love story. And what a great love story it turned out to be.

I read this even faster than the first book and had such a great time. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this exciting series.

My Review

Small town settings are such a draw for me. Especially in the horror and paranormal genres. Brit Lunden sucked me right into this one with her flawed, vulnerable character, Sheriff Clay Finnes. His daughter has been missing for a long time and his marriage is crumbling. Things happen to challenge him to the core as he follows the bread crumbs for answers.

Bulwark may be a shorter read but the author packed it with so much mystery to ponder. What’s real and what isn’t keep you guessing. Where does the weird green water come from? Is there a Gingerbread House? What about the reports of wolves in the woods around town? And can a witch be behind all of the bad things that have happened?

I wasn’t sure about anything as I raced through this book.  The plot is revealed like driving a winding road. You can’t see what’s around the next curve, especially the ending.
