Few people even know that the Scion School exists. Tucked away on a private Caribbean island, the school is host to thirty-six exceptionally gifted students, all orphans. They train and study every day to prepare themselves for an immense responsibility, to lead humankind back from the brink of extinction.

At least, that’s what they’ve been told.

Among the thirty-six is Jacey, 17, one of four Scions in the Eagle class. She is the favorite of the 93-year-old headmaster, Dr. Carlhagen. But when Jacey overhears a conversation between a strange visitor and one of the school’s first graduates, she learns a stunning fact about her future. One that Dr. Carlhagen has kept from all the Scions.

I’ve read Erik’s other books and this one he kept close to the vest. I had no clue what it was about when he sent it to me and was surprised it was different from his other stories. A very pleasant and fun surprise!

Undermountain (The Undermountain Saga, #1)

My Review

Two teens from different worlds . . . Seeking refuge from their troubled home lives, sixteen year olds Danny Michaelson and Breyona Lewis join a group of teens in the Canadian Rocky Mountains for a ten-day hiking excursion.

. . . the encounter of a lifetime . . . Six days in, Danny and Breyona come face to face with a creature of legend–an eight foot tall beast they tag as “bigfoot.” But this is no mere animal, and it doesn’t want humans knowing its secrets.

. . . friendship, love, and loyalty . . . Swept into the hidden city of Undermountain, Danny, Breyona and their friends find themselves in a race for survival against alien forces determined to take control the earth.

Book #2

Afterlife (The Undermountain Saga, #2)

My Review

Afterlife is the stunning second book in The Undermountain Saga!

They think their adventures are behind them . . . The six teens who were rescued from a mountainside in the Canadian Rockies are now famous. But only they know the true story-of what they discovered, what they survived-of Undermountain. Those secrets bind them together and pull them toward an ill-fated reunion.

. . . the war between tangoga and bigfeet still rages . . . The tangoga boss GorVit searches for a lost technology, the terrible weapon of a vanished race. And he’ll happily use Breyona as leverage to get Danny’s help.

. . . the power of ultimate destruction hangs in the balance . . . Thrust into the midst of war, and into the arms of a beautiful queen, Danny races on a collision course with destiny. And Breyona, still testing the limits of her amazing powers, must choose between what she desires and what is right.

. . . friendship, loyalty, and temptation . . . One will give in.

One will give up.

One will give all.

Shudder

Published June 15, 2013

~~~~~
It’s only been three days, and already everything is different.
Paragon is behind her, but somehow Alessa’s life may actually have gotten worse. In a wrenching twist of fate, she traded the safety and companionship of her sister for that of her true love, losing a vital partner she’d counted on for the ordeal ahead. Her comfortable university life is but a distant memory, as she faces the prospect of surviving a bleak winter on the meager remains of a ravaged world. And if she’d thought she’d tasted fear upon seeing a ghost, she was wrong; now she’s discovering new depths of terror while being hunted by a deadly virus and a terrifying pack of superhuman creatures thirsting for blood.
And then there are the visions.
The memory-altering “stitch” unlocked something in Alessa’s mind, and now she can’t shake the constant flood of alien feelings ransacking her emotions. Haunting memories of an old flame are driving a deep and painful rift into her once-secure relationship. And a series of staggering revelations about the treacherous Engineers – and the bone-chilling deceit shrouding her world’s sorry history – will soon leave Alessa reeling…
Review:
 I enjoyed the merging of genre and thought it was a unique twist on sci-fi and dystopia, with a little paranormal aspect until we learn otherwise.
The Bookish Daydreamer – OMG Endings!
Samantha: My favorite scene to write in Shudder was definitely the big revelation in the very last chapter. Heart-wrenching. – Interview at Lovely Reads
Melissa’s Eclectic Bookshelf – Developing Deep Characters
Things get even more complicated when Alessa discovers something new about herself, a twist that I sure never saw coming. Again kudos Samantha for a great job well done. ~Review at Total Book Nerds
28 – YA Book Addict – Review
The one constant thought that kept coming at me while I was reading Shudder was the originality of it. I remember feeling the exact same way while I was reading Stitch. Personally, I have never read anything like it before and I have to give huge applause to an author who can create such a fantastically original, well written, engaging piece of writing.
Library of a Book Witch – POV Perfection!
…the transitions between character to character are smooth and never feel unnatural or jarring, each character’s situation has a different aura to it, I could immediately tell which character I was currently reading about… Review at Book Adoration.
Samantha teases us with two girls, one stoned by an angry mob, the other in a prison cell. We don’t know who is who. And it’s deliciously mysterious!!
29 – Mel’s ShelvesPraise for Pacing!
Fast paced with not a single dull moment, this book will have you turning pages until the end. – Review at Little Hyuts
Review
Oh, my! Dystopia at its finest! A quick word on Stitch (book 1): It had been a while since I’d read what it was about so I just started reading. It seemed like a nice time travel romance with a hint of something else and then BAM!, in came the dystopia element. At that point, I couldn’t put it down…
Fundinmental – Painstakingly Plotted World
The complexity of the plot and the dynamics have you wondering what exactly Samantha has in her mind to be able to imagine this complex world. I never one time imagined that what happens in the book could actually happen but now the idea is planted firmly in my mind. It is a little freaky. – Review at Cynthia Shepp Book Reviews & Editing
Review:
 Shudder… has so many things going on that, at times, I was torn about where I wanted the story to go.
30 Literary Meanderings – Top Ten Raving Fan Moments!
Shudder is one of the best dystopians I’ve read so far! It’s so intense, so captivating. There’s a lot in it, and it’s so well written. The action, the suspense, the thrill… All of it will leave you begging for more. I know I am! Samantha, you’ve really set the bar with this one. I enjoyed every second of it. ~ Review at City of Books
31 My Devotional Thoughts – More Crushing On Characters!
Isaac Sttich Trilogy
Interview with Isaac at Always YA at Heart
– Green Mountain Couple – More Vile Villainy!
“The memory alteration research mentioned some, well, unfortunate side effects…” – Guest Post at Crys Book Reviews
Review
I absolutely LOVE LOVED this book. It was one of those books that I picked up and didn’t want to set back down even after it was finished.
Sept. 1 – The Book Rogue – Review
Some things were not that unusual for a Dystopian, but there were also some shocking aspects — in the regard that I don’t find them too absurd to actually happen, like right now. Genius and insanity are utterly and truly a very fine line that tends to blur a lot.
Quote:
Cemetery Planet
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Imagine it. All alone on a planet far, far from home.
It’s a graveyard, the whole planet. And that’s all there is, you and the dead.
You think you are alone, but….you find you’re not.
The hologram you created for a companion doesn’t count. But she should.
She’s the one you’ll need when it comes calling.
I just had to read this book!
The premise is not that far-fetched.
Where will we put the dead in the years to come, when there is no more room to bury them.
This takes place 800 years in the future, when space travel is common, and for some, affordable.
You can come visit your loved ones, or just pay a fee to keep the grave maintained.
Kind of like a theme park for the dead.
That’s where the caretaker, Harvey Crane, comes in.
His job is to maintain the graves and keep the facility up and running, even though no one comes here anymore.
He takes a holographic image from a dead woman’s grave and enhances her so he’ll have someone to talk to. So he won’t feel so alone during his stint on the planet.
When things start going all weird and breaking down, he just thinks the equipment is in need of some maintenance.
But then he keeps seeing something streaking from gravestone to gravestone and he realizes he’s not alone. There’s something else, something monstrous here. And it wants him.
scary graveyard photo: graveyard 2qsm4id.gif
Even if there wasn’t something there, I would probably conjure something up in my half-crazed imagination.
No human contact and the only real voice you hear is your own. You could probably go for days without saying a word.
Who knows how you would handle that. What tricks your mind might play on you.
Except, it’s no trick this time!
The author took this awesome idea and ran with it. I read it in one sitting and had to go right out and get the next book in this series.
The ending was exciting and leads you to wonder, where is this series going next.
I look forward to finding out.
In the game, she and a team of other teens are sent on missions to eliminate the Drau, terrifying and beautiful alien creatures. There are no practice runs, no training, and no way out. Miki has only the guidance of secretive but maddeningly attractive team leader Jackson Tate, who says the game isn’t really a game, that what Miki and her new teammates do now determines their survival, and the survival of every other person on this planet. She laughs. He doesn’t. And then the game takes a deadly and terrifying turn.
Welcome to My Monday Minis.
This is where I review very short stories and flash fiction.
For today I’ll be telling you about Escaping by John K. Patterson.
This cover art is temporary. I'll find something better from a willing artist and post it as soon as possible.
My Review
Tobias Carter just hopes the damaged carrier will stay together. Maybe they will get lucky and won’t be followed from the city.
No such luck. Two Arriver drones are racing over the sand to intercept them. It doesn’t look good, and Tobias has given up on prayer.
But, Reverend Rousseau hasn’t given up on Tobias.
My thoughts
This is a really fast read. Alien beings have attacked the city and most of the ships, with survivors on board, didn’t make it far.
With their last transport falling apart around him, Tobias is carrying on a conversation with the Reverend.
He’s seen some terrible things back on Earth and doesn’t want to go there with the holy man, but Rousseau is persistent.
After the read the last sentence, I thought about this story.
The ending was somewhat predictable, but I got the one I wanted.
I haven’t read many science fiction books that deal with God and lack of faith.
The author spun it all together in a neat little package that will make you think too.
Precipice: The Beginning (Book One)
goodreads-badge-add-plus
I love books about space travel and other planets. I also love stories with horrific creatures.
I found both in Precipice.
A large ship is swallowed up in the ocean and it sounds the death knell for Earth.
Meanwhile, 55 million miles from Earth, Lieutenant Travis Daniels and his elite team are little more than prisoners.
After a FUBAR mission, Travis made a deal to keep his team from a death sentence and they are now on Mars, helping to colonize it.
ghosts of mars photo: Ghost of Mars Ghosts_of_Mars.jpg
When they aren’t mining, they spend most of their time in their cells.
“The excitement of being stationed on the fourth planet from the sun has long since worn off.”
Travis was already on Mars when his wife, Annie, discovers she’s pregnant. Since then, he’s only seen his son, Logan, twice, and that was on a monitor.
When they lose all communication with Earth, and finally do get a transmission, it shows an Earth with deep trenches ripped through it and flashes of strange creatures crawling out of them.
Travis has to find a way to get to his family while dealing with a madman that has control over them and the only ship able to get them home.
I enjoyed the camaraderie between Travis and his team. Each had their own distinct voice and their own place in the story. Without good secondary characters a story falls flat. Not so with this book.
While the situation on Mars is deteriorating, Earth has fallen into ruin. What crawls out of those trenches is terrifying.
They are so fast, you barely have time to blink before they’re on you. With lizard like skin and jaws of a hell hound, once they get close to you, you’re dead. I call them the ‘dobiegators.’
Then there’s the big guy. He is so huge he is beyond comprehension. The best description I can give you is the creature from the movie Cloverfield.
cloverfield photo: Cloverfield Cloverfield2.jpg
This thing is so big it crushes buildings, reaching in to grab the people cowering inside.
It’s one thing after another, both on Earth and on Mars.
With Earth overrun and Mars not ready to be colonized yet, these people are between a rock and a hard place.
Kevin has written a thrilling, terrifying story with special ops, the end of the world, madmen, creatures from the bowels of Hell, and action galore.
When I finished reading Precipice, I said, “Yep, just what I needed.”
I love my horror and suspense and that’s just what I got!
Faithful Shadow
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Faithful Shadow takes you beyond the splendor of nature to the terror that lies beneath, one that should have never been discovered. Yellowstone is suffering from the largest forest fire in the park’s history. Ranger JOE RAND, once passionate about nature and now drowning in alcohol after the recent death of his son, notices something is very wrong within Yellowstone after a string of disappearances. But when a fireman is found dead in the Old Faithful Inn after falling into a hole earlier that day, his body mauled and deprived of all its fluids, Joe knows he has no choice but to set down his flask and investigate. Joe and Lieutenant DALE CAFFEY of the Billings Fire Department go into the woods to search the hole the fireman had fallen into. They discover a series of tunnels lined with bones, the air thick with smoke. Joe and Dale conclude that the creature that had killed the fireman had left its subterranean dwelling to flee the overwhelming smoke from the fire above. The creature takes shelter inside the Inn, concealing itself within the darkened crevices, emerging to feast on passersby. After staging an evacuation of the park, they lock themselves inside the Inn to hunt the creature. After just a short while it becomes frighteningly clear that it is, in fact, the creature that is hunting them.
Hell has come to Yellowstone and it’s just getting started.
Before recorded history, before Humanity, since times immemorial, the Earth Keepers have been watching over our planet. Marked at birth and endowed with supreme powers, the nine chosen ones are the Earth’s record keepers and moderators, and when the time comes, ultimate decision makers. This is the first of their chronicles.
Legend of the Lemurians
The population of the red planet Catharsis, on the outskirts of the Andromeda Galaxy, is exceedingly beautiful. But Catharsians harbor a terrible secret: they have to share the planet with another race, which they call the Uglies, although the Uglies themselves prefer to be called Lemurians. Alas, no one on Catharsis cares what the Uglies prefer. Being ugly is considered a contagious disease, and the Uglies are herded into a reservation called Camp Ugly, where they live out their drudgery behind an electric fence. But the Uglies don’t seem to fret as they raise their young, guard the planet’s Crystalline Engine, and sing their heart-stopping songs to the Goddess of All, Mother Mu. And so, both races co-exist without much interaction, until the ultimate disaster strikes.
Morf is a seventeen-year-old Ugly who finds himself in the middle of it all. He is thrust fatefully into the leadership position when no one else can fill its shoes. Will the catastrophe bring to light everyone’s true beauty and true ugliness? Will planet Catharsis survive? What destiny lies in store for the Uglies? We are about to find out…
