With massive debt, a communist mother-in-law, a Shakespeare-quoting parrot, and a photojournalist boyfriend who may or may not be a spy, crafts editor Anastasia Pollack already juggles too much in her life. So she’s not thrilled when her magazine volunteers her to present workshops and judge a needlework contest at the inaugural conference of the NJ chapter of the Stitch and Bake Society, a national organization of retired professional women. At least her best friend and cooking editor Cloris McWerther has also been roped into similar duties for the culinary side of the 3-day event taking place on the grounds of the exclusive Beckwith Chateau Country Club.

Marlene Beckwith, wife of the multi-millionaire pharmaceutical magnate and country club owner, is both the chapter president and conference chairperson. The only thing greater than her ego is her sense of entitlement. She hates to lose at anything and fully expects to win both the needlework and baking competitions.

When Anastasia and Cloris arrive at the conference, they discover cash bribes in their registration packets. The Society members, few of whom are fans of Marlene, stick up for the accused and instead suggest that Marlene orchestrated the bribes to eliminate her stiffest competition.

The next morning when Marlene is found dead, Anastasia questions whether she really died peacefully in her sleep. After Marlene’s husband immediately has her cremated, Anastasia once again finds herself back in reluctant amateur sleuth mode.

With the help of Cloris, Marlene’s personal assistant Rhetta, and a laptop someone will stop at nothing to find, Anastasia soon unravels evidence of insurance scams, medical fraud, an opioid ring, long-buried family secrets, and too many possible suspects. And that’s before she not only stumbles over the body of yet another member of the Stitch and Bake Society but also finds Rhetta unconscious.

Can Anastasia piece together the various clues before she becomes the killer’s next target?

Crafting tips included.

Book Description:

Fearing
an invasion by German and Japanese forces during World War II, the U.S.
Coast Guard enlisted horsemen to patrol the beaches along the east and
west coasts. The unit was called “The Sand Pounders” and they rode their
horses up and down the beaches from 1942 to 1944.

In Tillamook,
Oregon, a young equestrian decided to join them. There was only one
problem…they were only accepting men. That didn’t slow her down.

”The Sand Pounder” is a Young Adult historical fiction set during World War II.

GUEST POST
.

Why I referred to the Japanese Internment Camps During WWII as Concentration Camps

I was born in Oregon in 1951. That was just a few years after World War 2. My father was only slightly involved in the war as it ended just after he enlisted, thank goodness! However, Fort Steven on the Oregon Coast was the only place in the continental U.S. that was shelled during the war. He would take me and my siblings to see the fort and tell us about the war. However, one element of the war that he never told me about was the rounding up of the Japanese Americans on the west coast and shipping them in cattle cars to Internment camps inland.

I learned about the internment camps when I became friends with Japanese kids whose parents and/or grandparents had been sent to them. I learned even more when I went to visit a college friend who lived just a few miles over the Oregon/California border from the camp at Tule Lake.

When I started researching for my book, “The Sand Pounder,” I read a book titled, “Beyond the Camps,” written by an author friend by the name of Denny Dressman. His book detailed the personal experiences of numerous Japanese Americans who, once released, settled in Denver where I now live.

As I added together all the stories that I was told from these various sources, I was shocked and saddened by how our government treated these people. While the Japanese families that I wrote about in my book are fictional, the experiences I relay through my writing really did happen to others. The Internment camps were supposed to be designed to keep the Japanese safe but that certainly wasn’t the way it was handled. I realize that fear can make people do strange and horrible things.

I hope we can learn from history. As Winston Churchill paraphrased the famous quote from Santayana

“Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.”

Inked & Sweet

by Megan Slayer

Inked & Sweet (Malachi Brothers 3) by [Megan Slayer]

Synopsis

Dante Malachi screwed his life up to epic proportions. His addictions nearly killed him before he hit rock bottom. Getting kicked out of the Malachi family was his motivation to clean up his act, but leaving his old life behind meant leaving her, as well. Rona’s the one he never forgot.

Rona never wanted to see Dante again. She blames him for the bad in her life — but also most of the good. When he comes back into her orbit, she knows she has to let him in — or get rid of him for good.

When a bomb threat throws them together, it’s up to Rona and Dante to decide if they want to extinguish the desire between them or reignite their fiery passion.

Check out this peek inside:

Copyright ©2021 Megan Slayer

Dante drove away from his brother’s guest house and growled. How dare his brother throw him out? How dare his brother demand he stop stealing money from the family? So he had no claim to the money and had treated his brothers shabbily, but Jesus. They didn’t have to throw him out.

Maybe he did deserve to be removed. He’d acted like a real jerk to Kelly, Martin’s girl, and spent so much money on worthless shit — drink, drugs, tattoos… He’d run roughshod over his life.

God, he was awful.

He’d been a man on the run — from his life, his family, the explosions he’d set off. He wanted someone to hurt in the same way he had. No one knew the truth, and he hadn’t shared many details. Why should he? His attitude had pushed everyone away.

He drove off and didn’t look back. Screw ’em. His brothers didn’t want him around, then fine. He’d show them he wasn’t just one thing — a screw-up. So his ex-wife and daughter hated him. So they refused to let him see his grandson.

Fine.

He’d become someone on his own. No more illegal stuff. No more expecting others to do the work for him.

He’d do it.

He had no choice.

Dante left his old life behind in search of a new one. He had business skills and the ability to talk to people. He’d find something and survive.

He wasn’t that old and had time to do something different with his life.

He owed it to his brothers to change and become the man they knew he could be. Besides, he owed it to himself to be better than his past.

Going Coastal

Kate Matthews Mystery Series Book 1

A client dying on her massage table is traumatic enough for Kate Matthews, but when the police declare that death a homicide, her life is upended as she is cast as the major suspect.

None of this is what Kate expected from her move to the peaceful, beach town of Santa Barbara, California. After a near-fatal heart attack, an early retirement from her Los Angeles law firm, and a change in careers, Kate envisioned a quiet life with her wife, Alicia, and their grown children.

Since her client, Celia Tucker, held a politically-influential position on the California Coastal Commission, the murder becomes a media event. Kate finds herself and her family sucked into the maelstrom. The former lawyer has all she can do to find the truth behind Celia’s death without adding her own name to the body count.

You’ve probably heard of pantsers verses plotters, i.e. writers who plan out their books (plotters) as opposed to those who start out with a vague idea of where the book is going. I definitely fall on the seat-of-your-pants side. In fact, my writing life began with a scene that played in my head so vividly that I was compelled to write it down. I had no idea who the people were or why they were dancing in the middle of a ballroom at a teacher’s conference, but there they were in my head, and now they were down on paper. That first scene I wrote ended up being in the middle of the story, absolute evidence that nothing in that novel was planned. I’m getting more organized in that I mostly write in the order that things happen in the book, but I don’t always know the victim or murderer before I start. Six published books into this adventure (Politics Makes Strange Deadfellows comes out in November), I am still surprised by what my characters do and say. Hopefully, it will always be that way.

.

.

Jane DiLucchio is a late bloomer when it comes to writing.

She spent many years as a teacher (first elementary school and later at the community college level), massage therapist, and backyard farmer before giving in to the little voices that kept sounding off in her head.

Since there’s a thin line between a psychotic and a writer (psychotics try to convince everyone that the voices they hear are real; writers write it down and tell everyone its fiction), Jane finally decided to give in to the voices rather than undergo intensive psychotherapy.

Jane and her wife are raising their two cats in a loving home in Southern California. (Actually, the cats allow Jane and Sue to live with them in return for certain personal services, but that’s another story entirely.) Jane continues to raise crops, travel, write, and spend time with her friends and family – all activities she loves.

The Grande Dame has brought the cream of Charleston society together to reveal that she is planning to give her wealth away to various charitable organizations. About Laura Childs

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop MysteriesScrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that take place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

The Stupid Monkey

Marco was skipping down the street with a song in his ears.

A fat monkey, who had black hair and a double chin (cheeky looking), came swinging from a nearby tree and threw a banana onto the footpath in Marco’s direction.

Someone yelled, “Marco get out the way!” but it was too late, Marco slipped over and broke his ankle.

The monkey laughed stupidly, Marco was fuming and wanted revenge.

The next day Marco shot the monkey with a slug gun.

The monkey packed his bags and moved back to the African jungle.

The Girl In The ’67 Beetle

by Linda Lenhoff

.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

The art director of Kids Press, Amy Shepherd has been assigned to reinvent the story of Goldilocks, and she finds her own life reflecting a similar tale. Will she fall for a man who’s a little too old (but exciting), a man who’s a little too young (but awfully exciting looking), or a man who’s just right, at least as far as her friends are concerned? Or will she bring Goldilocks’ story—and her own—up to date with a little help from high-technology and the Goldilocks Planet theory? Amy will have to decide how her own tale will end, all the while driving her beloved powder blue convertible through the streets of Santa Monica, where she has become known as the Girl in the ’67 Beetle, the only thing in her life that, so far at least, feels just right.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Working at Kids Press in Santa Monica, California,

does not mean that I have to wear primary colors

or polka dot jumpers, but it does have its perks,

one of them being that if I did show up in primary colors or

a polka dot jumper, no one would much care. I am the Co-

Director of Artistic Endeavors, according to my boss, a cheerful

entrepreneur named Nelson. My title is even printed on my

business cards, which I always forget to carry, maybe because

they’re shaped like little artist’s palettes. There is of course

another Co-Director of Artistic Endeavors named Chris (short

for Christopher, which he doesn’t much like being called),

who’s about my age. I have heard him use his full title when

he answers his phone, saying “This is Chris, Co-Director of

Artistic Endeavors.” Sometimes, he even adds, “What would

you like to fingerpaint today?” He gets quite a few hang-ups,

but maybe that’s his intent. I usually tell people I’m the co-art

director and leave it at that. I leave most of the phone answering

to Chris, anyway. It’s a thing with him.

“Ugh,” I hear from the front of the office, meaning our

administrative assistant and all-around super helpful person,

Kelly, has arrived. She’s about twenty-two and has blonde

surfer girl looks she cannot stand about herself, which those of

us whose blonde hair isn’t quite so light and shiny anymore just

can’t understand. Kelly lives out in the Valley, and although

it isn’t that far if you’re a bird flying directly—a big strong

bird, say—it can take an age to get here on the cracked, hot

freeway, given that every single other person in L.A. drives a

car, too.
