Synopsis:
LIZ ADAMS MYSTERY SERIES

A honeymoon in paradise turns perilous in this riveting seaside mystery.

A tropical vacation transforms into a web of danger and deception when an author and his manuscript vanish. Is his thriller about money laundering in the Caribbean too close to the truth? With the stakes high and time ticking, Private Investigator Liz Adams and her new husband, Brad, along with their truth-sniffing Labrador, Duke, partner with the local authorities to unravel a multitude of crimes. As they search for clues, the newlyweds explore the delights of the island, including a hunt for buried treasure. Will they uncover the truth in time, or will the honeymoon end in heartbreak? Set against the backdrop of the stunning island of Grand Cayman, this cozy mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Praise for Cayman Conundrum:

“5 Stars – Must Read… Set on a beautiful tropical island, Cayman Conundrum is full of fun and quirky characters and a mystery with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the last page.” ~ Sarah Hinrichs, Reedsy Discovery “The characters were well developed and yet offered additional surprises. The storytelling was great moving at a good pace, as was the world setting. It is very well written and keeps you wanting to read on for the next zinger.” ~ Texas Book Nook “We are headed into cozy season, and this is the perfect cozy mystery read . . . This author tells a story that is entertaining while drawing readers into a love of mystery.” ~ Novel News NetworkCAYMAN CONUNDRUM is the fourth book in Stacy Wilder’s fun and fast-paced cozy series, “Liz Adams Mysteries,” but readers new to the story shouldn’t have any trouble enjoying it as a standalone. (However, the previous books are cozy mystery gold.) Engaging characters, a puzzling and dangerous mystery, and a romance from the past combine for an entertaining and satisfying story.” ~ Karen Siddall “I’ll admit that sometimes I decide to read a book solely based on its cover. I won’t even read the plot summary. Being the dog lover that I am, when I saw the beautiful black lab on the cover of Stacy Wilder’s Cayman Conundrum: A Liz Adams Mystery I knew I had to pick it up. I’m here to report that in addition to a great cover, this was an excellent, page-turning mystery. While this was my first Liz Adams Mystery, this read smoothly as a standalone. However, now I want to go back and read the first three books. I need more reading hours in my life to inhale all these great books!” ~ Sarah S Erwin

MY REVIEW

Grand Cayman for your honeymoon. Sounds lovely. That’s what Private Investigator Liz Adams and her new husband Brad think. Fun in the sun and taking in the island’s beauty doesn’t last long. When someone they care about vanishes, it becomes a working vacation. And the stakes are high.

This is the fourth book in the series and I’m never afraid to jump in before I’ve read the other books. I had no problem here and had a lot of fun. I would like to go back and start at the beginning though. I’d like to learn how Liz and Brad met and read about how their romance began.

There’s something else fun in this book. There’s a special dog. A black Labrador named Duke is like a four-legged lie detector. How cool is that.

A beautiful setting. Some genuine and relatable characters. And a whole lot of action and mystery to sort out. All the ingredients for a fun read.

4 STARS

Chapter One
Secrets Are Hell
While Tim cocooned his body in the blue leather chair behind his desk, his fingers flew over the keyboard. The words flowed from his fingertips onto the computer screen. After he completed the final chapter of his novel, Secrets Are Hell, he leaned back in the seat that was positioned to optimize the view of the Caribbean. As he rubbed his newly acquired goatee, he watched the turquoise waves lap against the pearly sand. When Tim and his former partner, Brad, sold their company, Multipoint Protection Services, Tim moved to Grand Cayman to pursue his dream of becoming an author. He grinned. His vision was about to come true. After the identity thefts from his former company, Tim lasered in on the connection between the stolen information used to purchase prescription drugs and the subsequent laundering of the black market proceeds. The thriller was a product of his experiences, research, and imagination. He recalled the conversation with his informant at the bar. Once the man he only knew as Jax consumed three shots of tequila, he’d spilled secrets about the money laundering business on the island. The man dripped sweat as he spoke, and he warned Tim to be careful with the revelations. Although Tim had fictionalized the facts gathered during his research, he prayed that he’d sufficiently disguised the characters involved in the illicit events. Satisfied that the first draft was complete, he saved the document onto the flash drive and locked the device in the desk drawer. He stood and stretched his arms overhead before hiding the key underneath a leather-bound edition of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, one of many in his collection of books in the wall-to-wall bookcase behind him. Tim raised his eyes toward the planked pine ceiling and contemplated his next steps. When he returned from Brad’s upcoming wedding, he would consult with developmental editors. In the meantime, he’d let the story marinate. His phone pinged, and he turned back to the desk to find a text from his girlfriend, Becky. Why haven’t you called or messaged me? His six-month-old puppy, Snooper, barked. He stepped away from his cellphone to let the dog inside. A salty breeze drifted through the opening. As he inhaled the scent, he wondered why he’d ever gotten involved with the former beauty pageant queen. He met her a few months ago when he’d volunteered at the rescue organization where he had adopted Snooper. While he massaged the black and white cocker spaniel mix’s ears, he reflected on that day they’d both tended to the homeless pets. As Tim handed Becky a bag of cat food, a jolt of adrenaline pulsed through his body. Becky measured the servings and filled the bowls they’d deliver to the felines. While she poured, he admired her flowing raven hair that framed a heart-shaped face. Her almond shaped hazel-colored eyes shimmered with intrigue. After he heard Becky’s deep-throated laugh, he invited her to join him for a cup of coffee after their shift. A month into the relationship, she began texting him incessantly. If he didn’t reply within an hour, she’d get agitated. He regretted inviting her as his plus one to Brad and Liz’s wedding in Charleston, South Carolina. A sigh escaped his lips. He longed for a soulmate like his friend had discovered in Liz. Tim was delighted that the couple had chosen Grand Cayman as their honeymoon destination. He smiled in anticipation of the treasure hunt he’d planned as their wedding gift. Snooper wiggled away and bounded toward Tim’s cat, Irish. The feline hissed and halted the puppy in his tracks. Tim chuckled, picked up his phone, and fingered a response. Been working on the book. Meet up for drinks at five at The Deck? We can talk about travel plans. Without waiting for a reply, he placed the device down and strode toward the kitchen to feed his pets. Who knew that today would be the last time he would touch the manuscript? *** Excerpt from Cayman Conundrum by Stacy Wilder. Copyright 2024 by Stacy Wilder. Synopsis:
The Charmed Inn Mysteries

Roxy Gleason, an innkeeper by trade and a bibliomancer by birth, has lived in the same small town on the Susquehanna River in Central Pennsylvania for her entire life. Tradition is strong here. Roxy understands the rules and is willing to play by them most of the time. She runs the Charmed Inn, which has been in her family for decades. The inn is all set to host a writers’ professional business weekend that’s been planned down to the very last hand-folded napkin, and Roxy is ready for the influx of creatives. She knows she’ll have a lot of different and sometimes unusual personalities to deal with, but this is a yearly function, so she’s not expecting anything to go awry.

Her expectations are completely tanked when she finds a dead body on her daily walk by the river’s shore. Owen Schultz had checked in for the conference a few hours ago, and she’d last seen him having tea with her aunt in the dining room.

How did he get down here on the ferry, and who killed him?

Chapter 1

They called him Cheezy Rider—and with good cause.

I stood at the wide front window of the Charmed Inn with a cup of coffee in hand. I watched my great uncle toddling around the corner onto Chestnut Street, pedaling steadily on his old Beach Comber. The picture he made was something to behold. His bright orange vest perfectly matched the small caution flag waving from a tall pole attached to the back of the bike. His silver bullet helmet matched his thinning silver hair peeking out from underneath. But nothing matched his teal and red-flowered Hawaiian shirt.

His legs, covered in khakis, pumped away as he came up the block waving to anyone who happened to be on the short street in our small town on the shore of the Susquehanna River. The bicycle had a big wire basket on the front that he filled with a box of donuts from Delilah’s Donuts every day, a place that had been in the same family for seventy-five years, like so many other businesses here. Those donuts were heading right for my work and then right to my hips. But I had never said no to pastry, and I wasn’t going to start today. In fact, I needed the pick-me-up. Things were busy at the inn, with everyone checking in for the writers’ extended working weekend, and sugar was always welcome. The staff wouldn’t say no, either. “I’m going to take a break,” I said to my Aunt Hellen as I passed her in the hallway leading to the dining room. She was technically my great aunt, and she could keep things moving for a few minutes while I stepped out into the beautiful April afternoon sunshine. What I really wanted to say was that I was trying not to break, but that wouldn’t be good for business. It had been one heck of a morning already, and I needed a moment to collect myself in the downtime before the festivities really began. Donuts were a great distraction, even if my erstwhile uncle did bring them every day. “All righty, Ms. Mighty!” Aunt Hellen yelled back. This highly respected tasseomancer and seance-leader had a set of lungs that should never be allowed near a microphone. “I just finished having tea with Owen, so I’m free if you want to go on your walk, too. His phone rang in the middle of our tea, and it must have been important because he hightailed it out the door after making an excuse.” She situated herself behind the desk and placed her hands on the computer screen like it might fly away if she didn’t keep it locked down. “Hey, one thing before you go.” I held steady, waiting for the inevitable question. My life seemed to be filled with questions. “What kind of afternoon do you think we’re going to have? Should I restock the printer?” Showing my teeth in what should have been a smile, I flipped open the book I held in my other hand, shaking my head at the ridiculousness of it all. Why, oh why, did I have to have this particular book with me? And why was my aunt always trying to force me to use my “gift”? I had no real power to do anything, just predict the future or get guidance from the text. Sometimes it was right, sometimes not. Either way, it was not high-powered magic in the least. While poking my finger at the text, I said, “No need to stock the printer, but be prepared to deal with many irritations.” There’s nothing like trying to give a vague answer to a mundane question when the page you opened to was a spicy-hot scene between the hero and heroine in a recently released romance novel. “I could have told you that. You have to try harder if you want to own your power, Roxanne Gleason. This is not a game.” Peering at me over her bifocals, she twitched the classic “Mom finger” in my general direction and then tsked. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, but only because I knew it wouldn’t do me any good. It would probably get me a lecture, and I didn’t have time for that today. Plus, those donuts were calling my name. “Yes, Aunt Hellen. Sorry, Aunt Hellen.” “Cheeky,” she said under her breath, but I still heard it and smiled. “Is Owen’s nephew here yet?” “No, Owen said he had to back out at the last minute, so we have a free room if we need it.” I sighed because as much as I liked Andrew, that was one less eccentric I’d have to deal with. Owen was a character all on his own, but he knew when to rein it in, Andrew not so much. Plus, his room would still get paid for even if he wasn’t going to use it. “Okay, thanks for letting me know. Keep an eye out for Paddy McGruver,” I said. “He hasn’t checked in yet, and sometimes he likes to come in the back door to avoid what he assumes are the paparazzi.” “Oh my, Paddy’s coming in today? Will he be here all four days?” Aunt Hellen smoothed down the front of her shirt over what she jokingly called her shelf since it pretty much caught any crumbs she dropped while eating. She then pulled her peach cardigan closed over her stomach. “Yes, and yes. Try to keep your hands to yourself this time. You read tea leaves, not rumps. No one is falling for that I’m-a-rumpologist-bit, no matter how hard you try to sell it.” With that, I walked out the door and left her to primp and prime herself for one of the more problematic creatives who was going to be here for four whole days. Well, not quite four, since it was more like seventy-two total hours from check-in to check-out. But who was counting? With ten of the writers showcasing their intelligence and posturing over who had the best book and which classes were not to be missed, it would be enough time for me to need a vacation afterward. The hotel hosted this event every year, but this was my first as the owner of this fine establishment. I had been told to give myself the seven days following the event to only host boring people, so I could rest, relax, and restore my faith in down-to-earth people. I had taken the advice since it had come from the previous owner, my grandfather. We would have guests checking in on Sunday after everyone left, but there wouldn’t be a pen and paper or laptop in sight as far as the guest list went. I had made sure of it. Uncle Vince was racking his bike at the side of the building and removing his helmet when I stepped out onto the wide veranda that encircled the inn. I looked forward to his visits and had for all the years he’d been in my life. I wasn’t sure exactly how far away on my dad’s family tree he was, just that he was there and always had been. He was like a beacon in the middle of the day, everyone stopping as they strolled along the sidewalks to say hi and ask about his health. It kept him busy until I could reach him, which worked in my favor. As long as he didn’t give away any of my donuts. “I see you got two boxes this time,” I said as I approached the old man in his loud get-up. “Roxy, my love, my dove, how are we on this fine afternoon?” His smile was far cheekier than anything I had ever sported, and I immediately wondered what he was up to. It was almost never good. Or rather, it usually was good for someone but almost never good for me. “What are you hiding?” He slapped his hand to his chest and feigned hurt. “I would never -” “You do. Always,” I shot back, but a smile was trying to come out on my lips that I did not want to give in to. If I indulged him, he always had to see exactly how far he could take it. “I’m offended.” “Only because I’m catching you before you can even begin. Hand over the donuts, and I might be able to see my way to just watching for any missteps instead of thwarting you before you even get started.” At first, he looked defeated, but I knew for a fact that was a lie. He’d just figure out a different way to get around me. It was a game he liked to play, and since he was an uncle and someone who had watched over me since I was a toddler, I knew, and so did he, that I had a weak spot for him and his antics. As long as they didn’t hurt anyone. Sure enough, that smile popped back out on his face. As I knew it would. “I saw you in my scrying bowl this morning.” Ack, that was the last thing I wanted him to say. I would have preferred almost anything else, even the practical jokes he sometimes liked to indulge in. He wasn’t very good at them, but I laughed, even if it was just a big fake spider on my porch. His visions were some of my biggest fears, though. Or it might be better to say his visions had brought about many of my stumbles in life. *** Excerpt from By Hook or By Book by Misty Simon. Shopping for a Highlander’s Elopement

by Julia Kent

(Shopping for a Highlander, #3)
Publication date: June 10th 2025
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

I didn’t expect to fall for a Scottish footballer so annoyingly sunny you need shades to be around him.

I didn’t expect to say yes to his heart-felt, if loopy, proposal while he lay injured on the pitch, blathering on about banana pudding and sparkly unicorns.

What I definitely didn’t expect?

For our engagement to explode into a paparazzi circus, our mothers to turn into wedding bulldozers, and for our wedding protector’s perfectly reasonable elopement plan to spiral into a road trip escape.

So here we are.

In Love You, Maine, a town that celebrates Valentine’s Day every single day. We’re here to get married. Quietly. No drama. In disguise.

Although good luck hiding a 6’4” ginger Scottish striker wearing a knee brace and a perpetual extrovert smile.

Instead of being subtle and blending in? Our quiet escape is vibrating heart-shaped beds, mirrors on the ceilings, secret identities, interfering mothers, and one suspiciously enthusiastic moose that humps dumpsters.

This was supposed to be a simple wedding. Just me and Hamish. No fuss.

But nothing about us has ever been simple with us.

Still, this is what love is, right? It’s chaos. It’s compromise. It’s crying in a wedding planner’s office, then kissing in a hot spring.

It’s choosing each other again and again, even when everything goes sideways.

No matter what comes next… this is our comeback story, in more ways than one.

And no – that’s not a euphemism. 🙂

Shopping for a Highlander’s Elopement is a romantic comedy that blends the worlds of four bestselling series by New York Times bestselling romantic comedy author Julia Kent:

– Shopping for a Billionaire

– Shopping for a Highlander

– Whatever It Takes

– Love You, Maine

If you love sports romance, surprise proposals, grand gestures, chaotic weddings, Scottish footballers, golden retriever/black cat energy, and characters who love too hard, mess up spectacularly, and always find their way back to each other with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments (and lovingly-used scrunchies) along the way, then this is your book.

Love isn’t a football game.

It’s a feeling.

A feeling that uses instinct as a tool.

I’m smarter than this. When everything felt off, I should have known that it was off for a reason.

“Jody,” I say softly, “I canna do this.”

“Of course you can. You just have the jitters. Amy’s a wonderful woman and–”

“I dinna mean the proposin’ part. That’s fine. I can do that. I mean doin’ it on the pitch.”

His turn to go green.

“You want to cancel the proposal?”

“Aye. Nae. No’ the proposin’. The doin’ it in public part. I love Amy wi’ all ma body and soul.” I frown. “She’d hate to hear me say it that way. Soul and body.” I wink at Jody. “But it’s really the other way around. Ma body knows more than ma mind.”

“I don’t need to hear every thought that pops into your head, Hamish.”

“I only tell ye the important ones.”

“Like not wanting the big spectacle we arranged for you?”

“I’m tellin’ ye now, aren’t I?”

“We have extra cameramen here for this. Your parents and siblings are in the crowd. Declan and Andrew McCormick are here. We doubled the security.”

“Is this about money? I can pay for all that.”

“It’s not–well, yes, some of it is about the money. But it’s more about publicity and planning. A lot of people put forth a huge effort to make today special for you and Amy.”

“And forty thousand of ma closest fans.”

He closes his eyes and sighs through his nose. “A better time to realize this would have been weeks ago. Not a huge US exhibition game.”

“Ma instincts told me then that this was right. Now ma gut says something else. It all feels off.”

“Your gut.”

I pat my flat stomach. “It’s gotten me this far in life. Good gut.”

He’s right. I know how much work all the coaches, teammates, stadium staff and administrators, sponsors–hell, even the car park attendants–have put into helping me today. I don’t have cold feet, and I love Amy to the moon and back, but something feels wrong.

As Amy says, hinky.

I can’t explain it. If I had words for it, I’d use them. It’s a feeling, and those don’t always line up nice and neat in words that make sense.

The Captain’s Crush

by Freda Ann

(A Bliss Cay Novella, #6)
Publication date: June 13th 2025
Genres: Sweet & Clean Romance/Christian Romance/Contemporary Romance

Amelia Marks met her first love, Lewis, on summer vacation twenty-six years ago as a teenager, but their future goals kept them apart once they left Bliss Cay.

Now a successful middle-aged widow, and mother to a teenage daughter, her career brings her back to the island, the same place where she met Lewis. After he pulls her over in his police car, she’s stunned when he insists they’ve never met.

Flat out mad that he’s making her feel like a complete stranger, considering the summer they shared together, Amelia is determined to leave her feelings for him in the past. That was before Amelia discovers she’s now his new boss at the Bliss Cay Police Department and his name is not Lewis, it’s Jesse, who shares a striking resemblance to the boy who stole her heart all those years ago.

This mid-life love story is about heartbreak, family bonds, and some unexpected new beginnings with a happily ever after ending.

(All books in this series are ‘standalone’ beach town love stories with new main characters in each book.)

Enjoy this peek inside:

Snapping back from my little trip down memory lane, a blaring siren pierces my helmet. I momentarily pull my gaze from the road to check the sideview mirrors for the cause.

I catch a glimpse of the police car behind me and ease my bike into the safety zone out of its way. Upon doing so, the marked car pulls behind me. I come to a stop putting the kickstand down and shutting the engine off.

Seriously? Relaxing my arms I force a breath out and rest my hands on my thighs waiting for the cop to approach me.

Hearing footsteps closing in, I turn to face them. Despite my helmet blocking a clear view, I notice a tall, muscular figure stopping a few feet in front of my bike.

Meeting his gaze, I see a man in uniform wearing dark sunglasses and his department issued hat resting his hands on his belt.

“Ma’am.” He gives me a slight nod. “I need your license and registration, please.”

Resisting the urge to ask the common question of ‘did I do something wrong officer’, I settle for, “No problem.”

Unzipping my vest I reach for the inside pocket, where I keep the paperwork. Pulling out what I need, I hand it to him and sit up tall while he looks them over.

As he scans my driver’s license and motorcycle registration, I furrow a brow studying his facial features. But when he senses me watching him, he lowers his hand and tips his head up staring back at me.

“Is something wrong?” The cop asks.

Curiosity gets the best of me the more I hear his voice. “Have we met before?”

Giving me a boyish grin as if he thinks I’m flirting with him, he dips his head and chuckles. “Uh, no ma’am. I can assure you we’ve never met, at least not until now.”

He hands me the papers when I say, “I guess not then. So, was I speeding or something?”

“Technically Ms. Marks you were going a little over the speed limit, but that’s not why I stopped you. There’s been a bike just like yours driving recklessly and cutting drivers off for a few weeks now. I’m just trying to keep everyone on our island safe.”

“Well, I appreciate that.”

He takes a step, stopping next to me while pulling his glasses halfway down his nose, looking over the top of them. “I hope you enjoy your stay ma’am.”

Peeking at the name tag on his chest, I state, “Thank you Officer Lewis. I’m sure I will.”

When he eases his car around me, I slide the papers back into my pocket. My brows raise up as his voice and what I could see of his eyes tickle a memory. “Wait, Officer Lewis? They wouldn’t use first names here, would they?”

I stare at the back of his patrol car as he drives away. That can’t be my Lewis, no way. He didn’t live here when we met. I could never forget his voice, eyes, or smile even after all of these years.

Author interview with Crystal Z. Lee

-What sort of lessons or values can the story in Pei’s Pineapple Cakes impart?

This is a story of empathy, kindness and courage. It’s also an ode to time-honored artisans and traditional craftsmanship. These days, children sometimes exalt modern technological devices above all else, forgetting nature and the beauty in simple handcrafted goods. I hope this story can spark a discussion surrounding these topics.

Pei’s Pineapple Cakes is a story about grandmotherly love. Were you inspired by your own grandmas when writing this book?

Yes, both of my grandmothers were nurturing and resilient women. Both had endured upheavals of their era in Taiwan, such as war, family separation, martial law etc. Just like Pei’s Amah, my Amahs were loving and fierce women dedicated to their families.

Are your two children’s books about Taiwan (Pei’s Pineapple Cakes and Kai the Dancing Butterfly) related to each other?

They are completely different stories but if you look closely at the illustrations, you will find some parallels. For example, Pei is supposed to be an older version of the girl on the cover of KTDB!

What makes Pei’s Pineapple Cakes stand out among the myriad of children’s food books?

This is an “own voices” bilingual book. But it’s also not a purely food-centric story. There are a variety of traditional Taiwanese folk arts mentioned, such as glove puppetry, Hakka thunder-tea making, Indigenous moon peach blossoms basket-weaving etc. Most of all, it’s a universal story of intergenerational love.

Pei’s Pineapple Cakes is your fourth children’s book but the first one that is bilingual. Why did you decide to write this story in bilingual mode?

I grew up in Taiwan. I spent half of my life in Asia and the other half in the US so I often think, dream, speak, read and write in two languages. Writing bilingually in Chinese and English came naturally and I’m also raising my children to be bilingual.

Pei’s Pineapple Cakes is a story that takes place in Taiwan. What are some of your favorite places in Taiwan?

I attended school near one of Taipei’s Eslite bookstores so was always hanging out there. Nanjing East Road is where my dad’s company was and where I spent many afternoons. I took my engagement photos at Tamsui River so for me, it’s a romantic place. Our babymoon was at the gorgeous Sun Moon Lake and at the beaches of Hengchun. My children also loved chasing butterflies at Maolin. Tainan is a favorite because it contains the oldest districts in Taiwan with alot of historical monuments still preserved.

The book cover of Pei’s Pineapple Cakes is a detailed and exquisite work of art. Tell us about it.

The cover of this book is meant to resemble a pineapple cakes box. The illustrator, Allie Su, really brought this concept to life. In Taiwan, the pineapple cakes packaging is often valued just as much as the actual pineapple cake itself.

Along with children’s books, you also write in other genres and formats. Do you have a more preferred format and genre to write in?

My most preferred format to write in is long form fiction and I gravitate towards historical novels. I also enjoy writing poetry and of course, children’s books.

-All of your children’s books have names in the titles, such as Pei, Mei, Rin and Kai. How do you come up with the character names in your books?

I try to be culturally authentic when choosing names for the characters. For example, in the story of Mei’s Mermaid Mission there are characters from Cambodia, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, etc., so their names are authentic to their cultural heritage. I remember receiving criticism that some of these names are “difficult to pronounce.” While that may be the case for some, I think this is a teachable moment. When we teach our children to learn names authentic to a particular culture, we are imparting virtues of empathy and respect. In this way, we also help our kids to cultivate an international worldview.

.

Enjoy this peek inside:

They rushed out of the hotel and stopped short of the Lyft; they gazed in wonderment at the outrageously small size of the car. Reluctantly they climbed into the car. It was like the Mouseketeer’s car; it was so small and they were so tall. They wondered if they should try another Lyft but there was not enough time. As they pulled away, they smelted gasoline or oil burning. Louie shot Ron a silly look, then smiled.

Ron hit the ceiling with every bump; his head bounced almost out of the taxi. Louie held his hand up to avoid suffering the same fate. The roads were rough all the way to the Air France Terminal. Louie told the driver he should sell his car to an amusement park.

Ron decided to travel with just a carry-on bag. He had no desire to check bags after remembering a few of Michael’s airline horror stories of his lost luggage. Michael, his mentor and friend, truly taught him the right way to travel safe and as a gentleman; they might give you an extra drink if you’re nice.

As Ron approached the departure gate, he tried to put the thought of leaving Rhonda behind out of his mind but not his heart. He wondered what Michael would say to him about this incident with Rhonda. He would tell Ron to smile; Rhonda was in a better place.

An extraterrestrial the size and shape of a boot box crashes into the New Jersey
cul-de-sac Colonial of a film-noir-obsessed family on the sharp edge of
emotional, marital, and financial insolvency; rearranges its subatomic
structure; and presents itself as the couples’ long-time film-noir lust
crushes: late noir icons Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. In short order,
Alan/Veronica displays an appetite for suburban debauchery, depravity,
decadence, and destruction and seduces the family into its psychopathic criminal
orbit with irresistible film noir panache, alluring sexual charisma, and
inconceivable intergalactic powers.

Twelve-year-old genius daughter, Mike Devine, figures out fast that
Alan/Veronica’s plan is to implode the planet. Can she save the world, not to
mention her family? She’ll need the only armament in the universe that can
subdue the extraterrestrial, and she’ll have to shoot it point blank. So it’s
questionable at best.

Enjoy this peek inside:

.

Five seconds later, a thin silver arm snaked out of the box.
It didn’t come from inside the box. It simply grew, again, seamlessly, out of
the side facing the TV.

.

The arm stretched purposefully to the huge television, paused
in front of the wide, dark, flat screen as if smelling it, sensing it, then
moved forward, penetrating the screen, passing through it as if by interstellar
osmosis or galactic magic, the end of the arm vanishing somewhere into the flat
panel, becoming one with the TV, which clicked back on, tuned to CNN, the
screen connected directly to the silver box via the arm.

.

The news ran as it always did, like the lifelike silver
appendage of a box—that had minutes ago fallen from the sky—had not somehow
melted into the television. But then the broadcast began to play faster, as if
someone had previously recorded the program and was fast-forwarding to find a
particularly exciting segment, except that fast-forwarding wasn’t fast enough
for whoever was holding the remote.

.

CNN picked up speed, its images flying by until they were an
indistinguishable blur of current events. And just when it seemed as if the
television would explode from the inconceivable velocity of the broadcast, the
screen split so that CNN filled one half and Oprah filled the other. Except it
was high-octane Oprah. Oprah at crazy speed. And then both halves of the screen
split again so that there were four programs running simultaneously—CNN, The
Food Network, Oprah, and National Geographic—all four channels racing through
their one-hour shows in thirty seconds, and then in fifteen seconds, and then
five seconds.

.

The screen split again.

.

Eight different channels ran concurrently. Then sixteen
channels. Thirty-two channels. Sixty-four channels.

.

Lifetime, Discovery, HBO, Hallmark, CBS, NBC, ABC, Disney,
Netflix, Showtime, The History Channel, Fox, Comedy Central, the BBC, Spanish
network programming, Cartoon Network. All of these, plus dozens more, played at
the same phenomenal pace.

.

And then the screen changed format; all sixty-four channels
moved to one half of the screen, and the Google home page appeared on the other
half. Almost instantly, the Google page half divided into four screens—text,
images, maps, and news—which played at the same death-defying pace as the
television channels.

.

Within seconds, each of the four Google squares divided into
sixty-four squares of text, images, maps, and news, and each one of those 256
mini-screens blasted through global information at warp speed.

.

Barely 120 seconds had elapsed, but what happened in the next
ten seconds surpassed all that had happened before.

.

As each second ticked by, both halves of the television
divided into smaller and smaller micro-screens until a thousand screens were
blistering through everything that had ever been written, photographed, filmed,
drawn, recorded, created, invented, and discovered; everyone who had ever lived
and died; everything that had happened in the entire history of man and
Earth—and all of it, every word, image, thought, and breath, was funneling
through the snaky arm into the silver box.

.
