Chapter I

First Contact

I never thought anyone close to me would die. I know it seems unrealistic because, sooner or later, we all die. But dying is supposed to happen in the future, like getting old. When you’re eighteen, you shouldn’t have to think about death. The idea of death takes you to a dark place where no one young ever wants to be.

It was the second week of June, and the first faint evidence of dawn trickled into the room. I pulled the curtain back, and fog blanketed the beach, darkening my mood. But then, a peculiar light shone from the shoreline in the distance, casting an eerie glow, like a beacon, in the mist.

I pulled a pink tee shirt from the closet and grabbed a pair of shorts from the pine dresser. Finally, I jerked a purple hoodie over my head, slipped on my flip-flops, and ran outside.

The strange light in the distance glowed like a full moon on a cloudy night. I crossed the beach and drifted in that direction. The long lines of white waves that swept across the shore glowed with a warm, radiant light. I kicked off my sandals at the shoreline, treading barefoot in the cold surf. Shivering, I clutched the sweatshirt tight around my neck. The ocean swirled around my ankles. I felt tiny shells and bits of seaweed in the ribbed sand under my feet.

Last week, after my high school graduation, Mom and I had flown from Phoenix to Nana’s house in Crescent Cove, a small tourist town on the California coast. It was a two-hour flight from Phoenix to Sacramento, then another forty-five minutes in a small plane to the nearest airport. It would have been almost ten hours in the car had we driven. Unfortunately, Mom was in no condition to help me drive, so Nana said she would pick us up at the airport.

By the time we picked up our luggage, Nana was waiting outside the terminal in her old VW van. The trip was hard on Mom. Dark circles of exhaustion were under her eyes, and her hair hung in matted strings against her pale cheeks. She collapsed into the front seat while Nana helped me load the baggage into the back of the van.

When we drove up to the house, I knew it right away, even though it had been five years since I’d last been there. The red shutters and gray wood shingle siding looked the same as I remembered. I knew the inside would smell of lemon polish, and everything would be spotless and scrubbed.

Without seeing it, I knew the old back deck would be the same: weathered but sturdy and always covered in sand. I could picture Dad grilling and sipping beer while Mom and I watched the waves crash on the shore. I had hoped coming here would be a distraction, but memories of Dad continued to flood my mind.

My stomach ached as I remembered the heavy black dress I wore to Dad’s funeral on that scorching day in Phoenix. The air was sizzling, too hot. I’d had to take deep breaths to keep from passing out. Although a canopy shaded the gravesite, the temperature was over 100 degrees. I ached with grief that I couldn’t at least see Dad one last time — to make sure it was really him who’d died in that horrible accident. The burning car wreck left his body unidentifiable. The funeral home cremated what was left of his remains.

As I followed the light through the surf, the sea surged with a rolling wave that knocked me over. It was as if something had stirred below the ocean and was rising from the deep. I threw my hands out to break my fall but landed in the shallows on my butt. I sat motionless in the surf, shivering in my wet clothes…

-INDEPENDENT BOOK REVIEW

–snippet of a review from OnlineBookClub.org–

Robert Joncas has crafted a compelling narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The pacing is well-balanced, and the author’s ability to evoke a wide range of emotions is commendable. Skye’s character development is particularly noteworthy, as readers witness her transformation from a grieving and vulnerable girl into a brave and determined young woman.

….Changing Tide is a remarkable book that grabs the reader’s attention from the very first page. With its compelling characters, intriguing plot twists, and seamless blending of genres, it is a true page-turner. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent reading this book and was genuinely sad when it came to an end. Without a doubt, I highly recommend picking up Changing Tide by Robert Joncas and awarding it a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars.

–snippet of a Review from Literary Titan–

In “Changing Tide,” Robert Joncas masterfully entwines an evocative narrative of a young girl, Skye, wrestling with her personal turmoil while being swept into a journey far beyond her understanding. Haunted by cryptic dreams and grappling with the tragic loss of her father and her mother’s spiraling depression, Skye’s world is painted with a brush of melancholy. However, a glimmer of hope emerges as she rekindles a connection with Paul, an alluring figure from her past, previously known for his childhood mischief.

Robert Joncas showcases an exceptional ability to portray raw emotions and delicate sentiments. His narrative is an intricate tapestry of romance, familial bonds, suspense, and an unmistakably human touch enveloped in a mantle of science fiction. The characters are vividly constructed, each contributing a unique hue to the narrative palette. Nana, Skye’s vivacious and fearless grandmother, was a particular standout, embodying a captivating blend of loyalty and audacious spirit.

The narrative is particularly successful in illustrating Skye’s internal struggle – her battle against emotional turmoil and her hesitant forays into new friendships. The character development of the alien entity is equally commendable, with its adaptation and backstory revealed in a layered, compelling manner.

Changing Tide” is a warmly recommended read, particularly for young adults who yearn for a slice of relatable, yet enchantingly fantastic, reality. This novel embodies the essence of heartfelt storytelling interlaced with an adventurous spirit, ensuring a riveting reading experience.

.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

I have always read books since I was a kid. I knew that eventually I would write a novel.

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I have always believed in reincarnation. Even as a kid, I could not relate to other children my age. I have always felt like an old soul.

What are some of your pet peeves?

People that need a lot of attention. I am never bored; I always have something to do or somewhere to go.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born in Colchester, England and grew up in Southern California. It was nice to be able to go from the mountains to the beach in one weekend. I also liked the mild weather.

Who is your hero and why?

I don’t really have one person as a hero. I admire people that struggle to succeed. It’s easy to give up.

What kind of world ruler would you be?

Compassionate.

What are you passionate about these days?

My work and writing. I am a Real Estate Broker and sell mostly second home mountain resort properties. Lots of people in Phoenix want to get out of the heat in the summer. I sell to a lot of teachers and retired folk. I enjoy what I do.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I did a lot of skiing and backpacking. Now I’m getting older I enjoy traveling and writing. I spent the last few years during COVID finishing my novel.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!

Stress free, laid back.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I had a short story published a few years ago in an anthology of International Writers. It was about a girl that bought an old muffin pan at a thrift store and the muffins she baked in it killed people.

Do you have a favorite movie?

I would have to say “Silence of the Lambs” is one of my top 10.

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?

Haha! I only have one out. Changing Tide would make a great movie. Also, it wouldn’t break the bank to cast it.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

I guess it would have to be an alien. One of the greys, like in my book.

Stuff about the Book:

What inspired you to write this book?

It started out as a short story I wrote for my granddaughter when she was twelve. Skye was also twelve and it was about 6,000 words long.

What can we expect from you in the future?

A sequel to Changing Tide. I never thought it would take off like it did and get great reviews. I left it open for a sequel just in case.

Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?

I felt sorry for Karly. She didn’t deserve to get hurt the way she did in the book.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Changing Tide?

In the beginning Skye has just graduated from high school but has had a tough time dealing with her father’s death and her mother’s depression. Her world has come crashing down on her. When she goes to visit Nana at the beach for the summer everything changes. Skye finds a conch shell that has an alien entity inside it. This sets in motion a series of events that change her life.

Skye’s grandmother (Nana) is a knowledgeable, aging hippy that doesn’t take any bull but has a heart of gold. She’s a loveable character. I don’t want to say too much about Paul. It would give away some of the story.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

I originally fashioned Skye after my granddaughter, Kaylee. Because I wrote the short story for her. Nana is every gutsy older woman that doesn’t care what they say or do. I rounded her out with a witty gentle side and lots of empathy. You can’t help but love Nana.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?

I liked the name Sky, but added an e. My mom was always called Nana by my son and granddaughter since she was from England. I used Paul because it was a common name but not old fashioned.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Not knowing where I was going with the story. I didn’t have an outline. I’m a pantser (writing by the seat of my pants). I wrote two alternate endings and through them out to my writing class and they chose the ending.

How did you come up with the title of your first novel?

The original short story was called “The Seashell.”  It sounded too bland for a novel. “Changing Tide” addresses the sea and the change that Skye goes through in the book.

Who designed your book cover?

I hired a company in Phoenix, 1106 Design to do the book layout. They sent me cover samples, but I had a different idea for the cover. I wanted something that grabbed the reader when they were searching for a book. I had my Real Estate photographer Barbara Sherman helped me design the cover. Barbara also does photography for the schools in Flagstaff. The background on the cover are some rocks in Buckskin Gultch, up by the Grand Canyon. The crow with the one blue eye is symbolic with the story and the conch shell sits on my desk in my office.

Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

Since this is my first novel, I learned writing isn’t as easy as I thought. I also learned that I edited too much while I wrote. The next novel I will concentrate more on getting the story down and worry about the editing when it’s completed.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

I hadn’t though about Skye, but I would like to see Kathy Bates play Nana.

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Hello everyone!

What is your favorite part of this book and why?

I like the fast pace and adventure of the Grand Canyon. It’s a wild ride and it was fun to write.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I’d like to have lunch with Nana. I would also like to sit down with the alien and talk about life and the universe.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

None of my characters are based on one specific person. They are a combination of personalities of people I have known.

Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.

Because of the good reviews and I am an avid reader and each time I had to read through it while it was being edited, I fell in love with it. Another reason, my friends Kathy and Kevin. Kathy read my manuscript and told Kevin about it. Kevin hasn’t read a book in almost 20 years. He couldn’t put it down.

What did you edit out of this book?

I edited out some of the cuss words. Originally Nana was throwing F bombs throughout the book. I realized that I wanted to clean it up so that it would be acceptable for younger people. I left a few cuss words though. When I edited Nana’s mouth, I realized I liked her a whole lot more.

Stuff about Writing/ Reading:

What book do you think everyone should read?

There are so many but “The Stand” by Stephen King and “Swan Song” by Robert McCammon left a big impression on me. It’s funny because the story lines are similar in both novels.

How long have you been writing?

About ten years.

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

I had the characters in my mind before I wrote the book. They were in my short story.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

In “Changing Tide” I had to research the Hopi’s legend of the Ant People. Also, a lot of research on archeology and astronomy. Even though I have a science degree, it’s been a while since I’ve been in school. I also wrote a lot of the end of the book at the Grand Canyon. It’s not far from where I live.

Do you see writing as a career?

I would like to.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I am a member of the Horror Writer’s Association. I like horror and fantasy. I also like crime and mystery novels. I read a lot. I have also read a lot of YA novels in the last few years as research for this book.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

I like to write with music in the background. My favorite is soft rock, like Linda Ronstadt or Stevie Nicks, and to be fair to the guys, I like to listen to Cat Stevens and Paul Simon when I write. I like all kinds of music, but I need mellow to concentrate while writing.

What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?

As an avid reader I though, I could do that. Write a novel. So, I did. I just wish I had done it sooner. But I also realize that it’s hard when you have a full time job, family, etc.

Advice they would give new authors?

Start when you are young and be patient. If it takes ten years just plug away at it. If you stick with it you will end up with a novel.

Describe your writing style.

I looked at many novels through the eyes of a writer instead of a reader. What makes them good? What sells them besides the story? I found that James Patterson is so popular because his novels have short chapters. It’s an easy read. You can read him on break at work or while on the bus or airport. So, I made my chapters short. I also made the font larger. I listened to what other readers said. People don’t like to squint when they read a book with tiny font.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I feel my story is original. I tried to find something similar but there are not a lot of alien romance books that are similar to mine. I’d have to say it’s sort of like Twilight with aliens instead of vampires.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

It was hard to write Skye in the beginning. I had lots of help from the women in my class and coworkers. When I finally got the hang of an eighteen-year-old girl, Skye took off. I also had help from my mentor, the Author Lynn Hightower. She would critic my chapters.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Onto the landing we danced, Alexander’s blonde hair bouncing as he brought me closer to the railing, edging dangerously near a fatal fall. All it would take was a wrong step or playful push to seal our fates.

“Jack. I have to tell you something,” he began softly. “I have not been entirely truthful, you see. There is something more I need to show you.” His voice was barely a whisper, his eyes falling to the stone beneath us.

I couldn’t imagine what he was about to divulge. My thoughts wheeled over possibilities like the mafia, or perhaps he was something of a Russian spy. My pulse thumped violently in my chest, the anticipation making my sternum ache.

“Alexander?” I matched his thoughtful tone, placing my hand over his on the railing. “Whatever it is… I’m here. I’m not leaving. You’ve shown me so much magic in a single night. How much more unbelievable could this possibly get?”

He smirked darkly, as if some great secret lived there beyond his violet stare. “Don’t be afraid. Close your eyes.” He instructed and so I did.

.

.

I heard the slight shuffle of heeled shoes and the metallic tapping that followed. The railing vibrated under my hands and fear was the very thing that forced my eyes open.

Alexander!”

There he stood upon the metal bar, the wind whipping about his ethereal hair and the dark mesh of his shirt.

I reached for him in my panic. “Are you insane? Get down from there!”

My stomach lurched, my fingertips splayed as I tried to grasp the hem of his pants and then… I failed.

My gut shot up to the roof of my mouth as I watched Alexander La Mont spiral off of the edge and down… down… down. His screaming voice vanished as so, too, did his body.

Holy shit!” I shrieked. “He killed himself. He fucking killed himself! What the fuck!”

But before I could spiral any further and get sick all over the balcony floor, the most peculiar thing happened. A voice. A tiny whisper of a thing beckoned to me.

“Jack. Jack, look down.”

His voice called to me from the side of the building. It was impossible. He was surely dead. This had to have been some sort of trick. Was I losing my mind from the trauma of watching this man splatter on the pavement far below? Wait. Did I actually see him hit the pavement? I leaned over the railing, my raven curls interrupting my view of the streets below as wind swirled them about my face.

There he was.

Standing on the wall, staring up at me, feet pressed against the brick and completely disregarding gravity, was my mentor. He stood there as effortlessly as some arachnid-themed superhero, the lights of the city shining behind his head creating an almost angelic halo about his blond curls.

The world spun rapidly as I white-knuckled the banister. What was happening? Perhaps it was still the absinthe playing tricks on me. Yes. Perhaps all of my drinks had been spiked that evening. There was no other way to explain it. This had to be the product of some intense hallucinogenic.

“No. You weren’t drugged,” he stated simply. “What you are seeing is very real, and I imagine very confusing. I had to show you. I needed you to believe me. There was no other way.”

“Alexander!” I screamed, my eyes welling up with tears, watching them rain down over where he stood. “Please, please come back up! This is unnatural!”

He shook his head in protest. “No, no. How about you come down here.” He laughed, twirling in his spot with his arms outstretched to demonstrate he was truly not affected by the earth’s gravitational pull.

I hugged the railing, my hand gripping the metal bar tightly as fear turned my blood to ice. “N-no! I can’t!”

He cried up at me, “You’ve been telling yourself ‘no’ for so long! You’ve restricted yourself to a mediocre life, when so much more awaits you! Stop living in fear! Release yourself! Be free! Come to me! Now!” His hand outstretched towards me. Lightning cracked overhead.

I exhaled sharply, my fingers twitching in fear as I brought one leg over the ledge. I squeezed my eyes shut, focused on remembering how to breathe. Then came the other leg until I stood on the dangerous side of the railing, gripping to the metal and what might have been the last moments of my life.

“Jump, dear Jack,” he laughed.

“I can’t! I’ll fall!”

Terror gripped me to my core and reduced me to a little boy again. My heart lodged itself in my throat. The world beneath me spun in vicious circles as all the lights started to blur like watercolor. If I didn’t step down, I would surely fall forward with the vertigo. Few options were left now.

“I will catch you! I will keep you safe, if you only trust me!” Alexander promised over the rush of the wind, his smile flashing across his beautiful face.

His velvet words coaxed me enough at last, and down the lip I went. For a moment, time froze, the city fixed in place as my life flashed before my eyes. My mother, Bradley, Dad, Chloe—all happy and awash in sunlight. What if this was all truly a hallucination? What if I just hurled myself into my doom? Time resumed as I tumbled, arms flailing, the world about me smeared in violent color. Everything I had ever known was both literally and figuratively flipped upside down.

At last, arms wrapped about my body, holding me in place. Alexander hardly moved as he caught me against his chest with inhuman strength, his tight body acting like a bed for mine. He grinned up at me, our forms finally closing the distance that had plagued me all evening. I could feel my heartbeat slamming against him, yet his didn’t respond. There was nothing there.

“What… are you?”

He grinned, his lavender eyes sparkling as they beamed through the darkness into mine. “I am what rules the night. A master of the starlight, a fiend of flesh, both angel and demon as one. I am walking history—legend and myth, and you’ve known it in your heart all along.”

As for Jax, his past is a murky labyrinth of pain and darkness. Lives and love swing on a high-stakes pendulum as danger closes in.

Can Coralie and Jax beat the odds, untangle the mystery of the danger stalking them, and build a future that defies the limits of their pasts?

Enjoy this peek inside:

Eleanora settled across from Coralie at the kitchen table, her shrewd gaze sweeping over her with an unapologetic curiosity. Coralie couldn’t help but feel anxious with anticipation. After all, this was the renowned Mrs. Wilde, the matchmaker extraordinaire. If anyone could navigate the treacherous waters of her love life, it would be her.

“So, how’s your sex life?” Eleanora blurted out, her straightforwardness causing Coralie to nearly choke on her tea.

Jessie’s warning about Mrs. Wilde’s blunt nature had been an understatement, to say the least. But Coralie had come to the Peculiar Hearts Dating Agency for a reason—to find love, even if the thought made her stomach twist with uncertainty.

Summoning her courage, Coralie straightened her posture. She met Eleanora’s inquisitive gaze with a defiant spark in her caramel-colored eyes and a touch of humor snarking her voice. “Nonexistent.”

Eleanora nodded, her eyes sparkling with amusement. Her words carried an air of understanding as if she had already seen Coralie’s romantic future unfold. “I figured as much. That’s why you’re here, my dear. Seeking a second chance at love.”

Relief flooded through Coralie, grateful she didn’t have to delve into the messy details of her past relationships. Eleanora seemed to possess an innate sense of what she needed. It brought a flicker of hope to Coralie’s weary heart. Could she truly open herself up to love again? Memories of her disastrous ex still lingered, fresh like an open wound that refused to heal. It had been two long years. She had remained closed off, unwilling to expose herself to the vulnerability that came with dating someone new and opening up to them.

Returning to Mystic River had been her escape, a refuge from the pain she endured. The house she inherited from her grandmother became her project, a labor of love and distraction. For months, she toiled away, dedicating herself to the renovation. It was a way to create her own haven and a means of avoiding the potential heartache that came with opening her heart to another. She had convinced herself that she didn’t need anyone else, not after the wounds inflicted by her ex.

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR F.D. FAIR

.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

I have always loved reading paranormal romance books. Specifically true mate books, and over the years, I found myself thinking up new stories in my head, wishing that I could find those books but couldn’t so I decided to write them myself.

What are some of your pet peeves?

As strange as it is, open cupboards, toilet paper rolled under and not over are two of my biggest pet peeves.

How to find time to write as a parent?

Writing as a parent is challenging, that’s for sure. I make it work though. I write while sitting in the parking lot of my son’s wrestling practice, in the mornings before school and work and after they go to bed.

What can we expect from you in the future?

This series is set to have 13 books in total, though that number has already increased by 1 so chances are it could again. I have also been working on a spin-off series for the Westwood Pack and will hopefully be publishing the first one in 2024.

I’m also dipping my toe into my second favorite book genre, Paranormal Cozy Mysteries and hope to release the first of a long series in 2024 as well.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story? Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.

This is a hard question to answer because I would love to say that I plot out all my books (which I do) and stick to it, but the truth is that I plot out the books by chapter and 99% of the time it doesn’t work that way. It’s as if my characters take on a life of their own through me and hijack the story completely. I am usually able to end up where I wanted to be and have everything in there that I wanted to happen, just sometimes they take the long way there.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I read constantly, except when I’m writing. In fact, it’s so much that my husband has joked about limiting my reading to one book a month because I can usually read a book in 1 day but for that entire day, I do nothing but read. I get sucked into the book and NEED to know what happens next. It’s one of the things I strive to do with my own writing. I want to be one of those authors that can grip you from the start of page one and you can’t put the book down until you find out what happens. It’s also one of the reasons that I write interconnected stand-alones. As much as I love-hate cliffhangers, I wanted to write each story to its conclusion. But to keep the readers wanting more, there is an epilogue in each book with a preview of what’s to come. To keep them wanting more.

Hunter’s Heart

.

The Westwood Pack Book 5

.

Hunters have been tasked with eradicating my kind from the earth. The woman I want just so happens to be one of them…

Rayne

I am the descendant of Ullr, the Norse God of the Hunt.
I’ve hunted supernaturals all my life, always questioning if it was the right thing to do.
A woman on fire saved me during a battle, and now I can’t stop questioning my entire life.
So, I run to find out for myself.
And I run right into the supernatural world…
Which should have scared me, but instead I’ve found my home.
The supernaturals my father taught me to hate are more family to me than he ever was.
So, naturally, complications are sure to follow.
My complication is a tall, blonde, sexy-as-sin vampire, who’s also the biggest dick I’ve ever met.
But my real problem is that I can’t find the strength to deny him…

Drake

I’ve never wanted a mate.
I could never fathom how anyone could be tethered to a single person their entire life.
Then I met her. She’s gorgeous, strong willed, everything I could ever imagine in a mate.
She also happens to drive me certifiably insane.
The real problem? She’s a hunter.
And my kind are usually the ones in her crosshairs…

Can enemies truly turn to lovers, or will she betray us all at the first opportunity?

I’m a vampire.
I was taken captive and tortured by a group of hunters when I was young.

Now, with my friend’s help, I’m learning to live again.
And I’m longing for a mate of my own…
When Andres confirms what my body already seems to know – that he’s my mate. It terrifies me.
I know I can’t love another until I can love myself again. I just hope he’ll be able to wait…

Andres

I’ve waited a thousand years for her, and I’d wait a thousand more.
She’s perfect and everything I’ve ever wished for–caring, beautiful, and a heart of gold.
The last great seer told me she wouldn’t be ready right away, and she would need time and understanding.
I’ve been preparing myself for that and thought I was ready.
But it’s so hard…
Every second of every day my dragon is riding me to claim our mate, and I’m not sure how much longer I can keep him under control…

Maybe unleashing him on the ones who held her captive would help.

Though not for long…

Reacting swiftly, Damian lunged out of bed and rushed to Sarah’s side, using his body as a shield between Alicia and her mother. “Alicia? Alicia?” he repeated, his voice desperate, hoping to break the hold of whatever trance had possessed her.

Alicia blinked, her eyes refocusing as she met her father’s gaze. “Dad?” Her voice was calm, confusion evident in her tone. She glanced down at the knife in her hand. “What happened?”

“That’s what we want to know,” Damian replied, his voice filled with concern. “Your mother woke up and saw you standing over her with a knife.”

Alicia’s gaze shifted to Sarah, who sat trembling on the bed. “I don’t remember coming in here. I don’t know where I got the knife from.” She looked back at her father. “I must’ve been sleepwalking again.”

“What’s the last thing you remember?” Damian asked, a trace of suspicion in his voice.

Alicia’s mind raced, searching for a plausible explanation. She couldn’t afford to be caught in the act of sneaking into their room. “I… I remember a nightmare. Yes, that’s what it was. I was sleeping, and I had a nightmare. I didn’t know what was going on. And the next thing I know, you’re shaking me awake.”

Relieved by Alicia’s explanation, Damian gently took the knife from her hand. “Let me just take this from you,” he said, his tone soothing. “And let’s get you back into bed.”

 Sunset House

Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper #18

by J.L. Bryan

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

The title and cover are perfect for this one. An old mansion on a run down street that’s converted into a retirement home. Hence the eerie house on the cover and Sunset in the title. These people are living out their last years.

I’m always looking for horror stories with more mature characters. Got a lot of them in this book. And they aren’t going down without a fight. Some real tough cookies.  And some don’t think they need Ellie. That changes pretty quickly as events become more and more dangerous.

I loved some of these characters. I think they’d have taken on the evil presence with canes and  walkers. Any ghost should think twice before taking on these senior citizens. They’ve been around a long time. Got plenty in their bags of tricks.

I remember how much I loved this series when I started reading it and I still do. The author continues to give me new settings and evil beings to keep it fresh. Not that it could ever fall short for me. I’ll always be waiting for the next book.

Synopsis

The old Heusinkveld mansion overlooks the mostly shuttered main street of the small town of Burdener’s Hill. Once a testament to local wealth and aspiration, the brooding edifice now clings to life as the Sunshine House, a retirement home inhabited by an eccentric collection of locals bound together by fond memories of their shrinking hometown.

When a newly arrived resident finds herself tormented by a threatening specter from her past, paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan is called in to confront it. The entity puts up a strong fight, resisting capture, and soon more residents are in danger. With nowhere else to go, they need Ellie to remove the ghost before it inflicts serious harm or death on those who have made the strange old house their home.

 The Funtime Show

Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper #19

by J.L. Bryan

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

All of the Ellie Jordan books are scary, but I was seriously creeped out by this one. The lifeless eyes in dolls and puppets have always made me shudder. I imagine them suddenly blinking, their heads turning and something terrible coming out of their mouths. There’s this scene where Ellie puts her hand inside the puppet. Eew. What if it gets stuck or possesses her? See, they’re creepy.

Ellie and Stacey have their work cut out for them. The Calvert’s are in real danger. Something wants in. And something else already is. Once again, Ellie does her research and Stacey mentally paces back and forth, ready to get to the good stuff. The ghost trapping. And a ghost trapping they will go.

Still loving this series and the characters. And I’m really curious where it goes next. I’ll be waiting……….

At first, the parents are glad to see the kids put down their screens and play creatively with the old theatrical elements, but their performances and their experiences grow more disturbing over time.

In this house, the reruns of a dark past never stop playing, and paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan must protect the family from a malevolent presence trying to draw them into the infernal show.

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
No lightning bolt streaked from the sky the day my life as I knew it began to end. There was no warning at all. Nothing. There I was, sitting at my desk, minding my own business, doing my job. My official job title is “legal assistant.” The more exotic sounding title is paralegal. In the old days when folks called jobs what they actually were, the title was “legal secretary.” Me? I answer to any of the above. Or just to Ariel. That’s my name. Ariel Anson.
Now, I know the general public thinks a law office is an exciting place, full of fascinating cases and esoteric points of law highlighted with flashes of legal genius, something different every day. Not. Trust me on this. You seen one accident case, you seen ‘em all. And corporate law? Business law? Wills and estates? Oh, man, you don’t even want to go there. Domestic law? Right. The only thing worse than a divorce case is an estate fight. At least folks involved in a divorce are supposed to hate each other whereas a fight over Daddy’s will? Oh. My. God.
Anyway, that’s what I was doing. Just minding my own business in the course of my humdrum day and doing my job at the century-old, prestigious central Georgia law firm of Baker, Lawson, Abercrombie & Hunter, where the partners walk around in blissful ignorance of the fact the firm is referred to in legal circles as BLAH. All us legal assistants think that’s a hoot.
I was the only legal gal who worked for three partners. Some of the girls had just one, most had two. Sort of gave me a certain mystique of extreme competence, you know? In all honesty, most of the time the three attorneys I had were cakewalks, though I wasn’t about to announce such to the powers-that-be lest I end up with four attorneys to babysit. It all depended on who the three partners were. And mine were hand-picked, a luxury I had because I was good, good enough after eleven years in the business to pick and choose the attorneys I worked for. Diplomatically, of course. So diplomatically that nobody knew that but me. And my little sister.
~~~~~

About Author Gail Roughton:

Gail Roughton is a native of small town Georgia whose Deep South heritage features prominently in most of her work.  She’s a paralegal who’s lived in a law office for over forty years, during which time she’s raised three children and quite a few attorneys.  She’s tried retirement but it didn’t take. Through it all, she’s kept herself sane by writing novels and tossing them into her closet.  Thanks to BWL Publishing, Inc., most of those novels have now emerged in published form.  A cross-genre writer, her books range from humor to romance to thriller to horror and she’s never quite sure what to expect when she sits down at the keyboard.  She usually has a project or two on the backburner but doesn’t discuss them for fear of jinxing herself.  Given her affinity for the supernatural, this should come as no surprise to any reader.

A little bit about K.Rose

I became an author mostly by accident. I was enjoying reading which I never really did until about 2018-ish, when I figured out that you can get free eBooks included with a Prime membership. Don’t hiss or boo; I am an avid reader now!

Don’t need KU, just Prime by the way. I came across a book that had a typo in it, and decided I would just Drop into the DMs on Facebook and tell them about it. They were so appreciative that I didn’t report it to amazon on the kindle app and I questioned why.

The explanation I got floored me. They can have their books basically banned for a little typo! And I happened to like that book, so we can’t have that. That author invited me to her ARC (advance reader copy) team, to hopefully catch these typos before they go to print.

She told her PA, or maybe other authors directly and I was invited to other ARC teams. Before I knew it, I wasn’t even picking out books to read anymore. I literally had enough books from one ARC to the next I didn’t have to choose which for me was great. I can be quite indecisive at times.

From there I was upgraded to some Beta, and even Alpha teams. And one day, one of the Authors invited me to do a rewrite of one of her books. I didn’t change the plot; I just rearranged some bits and changed the dynamic of one of the characters. This was a turning point for me.

On April fools, I designed a silly book cover with a butterfly and wrote a fake blurb and shared it with some of the beta teams I was on. They insisted I HAVE TO write this book and that blurb had them sold. So I did just that. I wrote my debut novel in record time. The Prophecy of the water Sprite just poured out of me and was published August 5th, 2021.

I chose to publish under the penname K. Rose because it is my name, just the short, short version, and because it looked a lot better on the cover of a book than the longer version did.

I did not even think twice about being self-published since all the authors I read for were as well. The heartache of being rejected after months and months of queries, and agent seeking, and all that mess that goes with traditional publishing just doesn’t seem fair, or nice, or healthy for my emotional well-being. So, I never gave it a second thought.

I have always been a firm believer in never put all your eggs in one basket, mostly because of my upbringing and the life I have lived teaching me lessons the hard way, and this made my decision to publish outside of KU for all my next manuscripts even easier. Though I can honestly say that I have spent far more money than I have made getting editing, covers, graphics, promotion, ads, and going to signings, I wouldn’t change any of it. I am having my own emotional rollercoaster of being an indie author, and I feel like you must accept the low points to appreciate the high ones.

Someday, if I keep working at it, maybe I can become financially stable doing this, but that isn’t why I do it. I do it because I have these stories to tell. I do it because it gives me a sense of worth, and pride…accomplishments that I wouldn’t have had if it weren’t for such a great community of other creatives. There are still good people in the world. Fair, honest, trustworthy, wear their heart on their sleeve, caring people; and now that I am a part of this community good luck trying to get rid of me!

Veils and Vampires

by CEE BEE

(Vampires of the Daemonverse, #2)
Publication date: October 14th 2023
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance

Highlander meets Twilight with a dash of Fifty Shades of Grey in this vampire romantasy…

Caelin MacGregor is an ancient king with a new love
Ages ago, I ruled a clan of vampire raiders. We were allies to the Vikings and enemies of the Rus. That life ended when the bloodkin plague wiped out all our women, including my beloved vampire bride, Elisava. A thousand years have passed. My heart remains empty. Then I see a human woman named Lexa. For the first time in ages, I feel true desire, respect and love. Could Lexa actually be a lost bloodkin lady … or is she a horrible trick from Pyri, the ancient fire goddess of the Rus raiders?
Lexa Uznetsov has a plan
To save my sister, Sash, I took on my father’s debt to Konstantin the Rus, leader of the New York Bratva. As a result, my life became a never-ending (and incredibly illegal) stakeout for the mob. After years of scheming, I’ve finally come up with a solid escape plan: find all three pieces of the infamous Veil Pendant. Once I reassemble this magical item, I’ll have the power to cure my sister … as well as the ability to say buh-bye to Konstantin. Sure, legends warn that reforming the Veil Pendant may bring about some nastiness called Pyri’s doomsday. Yet if it saves Sash, I’m willing to risk anything.
“Veils and Vampires is amazing! It has action and adventure and a little spicy. Enough that it makes you drool and want more. Honestly a totally different take on modern day vampire soulmates. I devoured this book in one sitting.” – Teresa, Goodreads

Lexa

When a girl decides to have sex with vampire, it isn’t easy to wait for the fun to begin. Yet, that’s exactly what Caelin’s asked me to do.

We left the Bold Tsarina—a building which is now in need of major renovations, by the way—and came over to Caelin’s penthouse. Once here, the man insisted that we shower and eat. Apparently, we have to keep up our strength for the next few days. I’d complain, but Caelin’s playing that I’m a thousand year old vampire card while looking at me all steamy-like. It totally works.

But if we wait much longer, I can’t be held responsible for what happens. Just saying.

Which brings me to where I am now: Caelin’s shower. It’s a modern set-up with a million nozzles and a ton of hand-held shower hose deals. I’m sure all that stuff has fancier names, but I’m used to sneaking into the performer’s bathroom when they’re between sets at the Lucky Ladies. This is way over my skillset. There’s even a touchpad with buttons. Who knew that you could put electronics in a shower without killing anyone? Apparently, it’s a thing.

Caelin is off cleaning up the last crumbs left in the kitchen after he whipped me up a delish omelet. I got to stare at his ass with abandon during the cooking process, too. All in all, very enjoyable.

Back to the shower. I toss aside my very plush robe, step into the stall and push a few buttons. A trickle of icy water dribbles from one high up nozzle. I force myself under the flow and, teeth chattering, take the quickest shower ever. Then, I hit the stop button.

Turning around, I find one very naked Caelin standing behind me. Did I mention this is a big shower? It is.

I take a moment to soak in the sight of him. There’s Caelin’s intense whiskey-brown eyes, strong jawline and wide mouth. But all these I’ve seen before. Now, I scan the ropes of muscles on his bare arms and chest. For someone who’s been in his share of battles, his skin is unscarred. A line of dark hair trails down his flat stomach to his large, hard cock.

Caelin steps into the shower, pausing when we’re both very naked and close. “That willna do, my beauty.”

“No?”

“Nae. Let me take care of ye.”

Caelin takes to pushing buttons until there’s a warm water shooting at me from all directions. He then lathers me up, staring off by standing behind me and washing my hair. That part is nice. Caelin then rubs suds all over my chest and ass. I don’t think my skin has ever gotten this much attention.

To rinse me off, he uses this hand-held shower-head and slowly makes each bubble go away. It’s killing me.

“D’ye know how many times I pictured you here, just as you are now?”

My core tightens. The idea of a naked Caelin imagining me makes my nipples tighten. Caelin notices the change. He leads a drop of water from my shoulder down to the tip of my breast.

“How many times?” I ask.

He slips his hand between my legs. For each word he speaks, he rubs once against my most sensitive spot. “Every. Damned. Day.”

Miscast as the villain most of his life, Seth “Big Bad” Wolf never believed he would get his very own happily ever after—until he found it with Lavender Seelie, Cinderella’s former fairy godmother and the Tale whose magic transplanted them from Make Believe to the ordinary human world. But now, as the holidays draw near, Seth senses something dark in the winter wind, something deadly that threatens the peace and happiness he’s finally found. And one thing’s for sure—whatever evil is coming to town better watch out, ’cause there’s nothing Seth won’t do to protect his family, even if that means unleashing the full fury of the wolf he keeps caged inside…

Read the Prologue

Prologue

Monsters are real.

I don’t give a shit what you’ve been told. Those brave reassurances from well-meaning parents meant to assuage childish fears that torment you in the lonely, murky darkness? Total bullshit.

The shadows that slither across the walls, undulating with foul purpose, just on the edge of moonlight? Exactly what you feared. Monsters in the closet, ready to pounce. Under the bed, waiting to grab your innocently dangling feet and drag you down into their hellish realm, eager to tear the flesh from your bones and devour your soul.

I would know.

I’ve spent most of my life hunting monsters down, bringing them to justice—dead or alive—even before I was cursed to become a monster myself. Then the hunter became the hunted, living life on the run, hiding in those very same shadows I knew harbored the worst abominations.

I thought it’d be better after we Tales were transplanted to the Here and Now, living among the very same Ordinary humans who’d told our stories for centuries. But freed from the constraints of our narratives, the monsters that had once been confined by plot and characterization and literary conventions were made flesh. And once more, I was forced to bring them down, even while trying to keep myself from being pinned with every attack on Tales and Ordinaries alike.

Then I met her. Lavender Seelie. Former fairy godmother to Cinderella and currently my heart, my love, my life. When she came crashing into my world—quite literally, actually—I realized just how empty my life had been. And this beautiful, powerful force of nature filled my world with light and love, healing my broken places, giving my life purpose again.

Together, we’ve battled not only our own demons, but also the monsters who threatened everything we’d built in the Here and Now and everyone we care about. Loving Lavender has given me the kind of strength that I’d always imagined I had but had never actually realized. And then she blessed me with the most amazing gift of all—she loved me in return, despite all my failings and mistakes and self-pity.

I owe her my life.

And for the last five years, we’ve lived in blissful quiet, healing each other’s wounds, building our own little corner of the world, confronting whatever came our way with the kind of courage that only being truly loved can inspire. And when we were blessed with our daughter Violet, that courage increased ten-fold.

Holding that baby girl in my arms for the first time made me feel invincible. Me. Seth Wolf. You’d know me better as the Big Bad Wolf, one of the most hated and hunted Tales in both Make Believe and the Here and Now. The same guy who had—once upon a time—been so devoid of hope that he’d kept a silver bullet hidden in a book of poetry, a last resort in case the monster ever completely consumed the man. I’m a big guy and my wolf is pretty impressive. But I’m definitely not bad. Just misunderstood and profiled by people looking for someone to blame.

Okay, yeah, back in Make Believe I’d had a history with Tess Little, aka Little Red Riding Hood. But I wasn’t some predatory asshole stalking her in hopes of a hot lunch. She was a grown woman, and we were lovers. And the only harm I ever did was break her heart—and my own, for the record. But that was a long time ago and we’re still close friends, our paths crossing again while she was investigating a gruesome series of murders (for which I was a suspect, of course) a year or so before I met Lavender—which, coincidentally, was a meeting engineered by Red.

And don’t get me started on the Pigg brothers. Those pricks were fleecing people out of their hard-earned money with their shoddy building practices. They got what was coming to them.

So, yeah, what you’ve read about me is bullshit.

These days I’m a husband, a father, a restauranteur and chef…hell, I’m even the de facto law enforcement, the local representative of the Fairytale Management Authority—or FMA—in the little town of Tales we call the Refuge. My life is perfect now—as quiet and calm and blissfully happy as I’d always dreamed.

So, what the hell was my problem?

As the holiday season ramped up, Christmas just a week away, my wife and daughter literally glowed with excitement and joy (hey, they’re fairies; it’s their thing) as they looked forward to all the festivities, the time with family and friends, the visit from Santa. But I had reverted to my old brooding ways.

The truth is, I didn’t trust this perfect peace. Still didn’t think I deserved it. And I missed the monsters.

I mean, not the actual monsters. They could fuck off and die. But it was what I knew, what I could control, especially before, when I’d only had me to worry about.

I missed the adventure, the hunt, teaming up with the woman I love to kick some ass… I wanted that again. Wanted the danger, the adrenaline rush, the victory over evil, the feeling that I’d made the world just a little safer, a little better for the people I care about.

And, hell, I don’t know…maybe it was because I was a dad now that I felt it was a moral imperative to protect my sweet girl and every other child from the foul, vicious, malignant miscreants I knew were out there, waiting to strike.

I had to do something.

The inactivity was driving me crazy. I couldn’t just sit on my ass and let everyone else deal with the dangers of the world. Otherwise, what good was I? What did it matter that I’d once been a formidable force against every evil under the sun and every villain hiding in darkness?

But, as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for.

’Cause one thing’s for sure: When you’re a Tale, you better watch out wishing for monsters to darken your doorstep. You never quite know what the hell could be coming to town…
